WORDS FROM OUR CLUBS Q UA M BATO O K

IN THE SPIRIT OF RECONCILIATION THE QUAMBATOOK FOOTBALL AND NETBALL CLUBS, ON BEHALF OF THE CENTRAL RIVERS LEAGUE, ACKNOWLEDGES THE TRADITIONAL CUSTODIANS OF COUNTRY THROUGHOUT AUSTRALIA AND THEIR CONNECTIONS TO LAND, SEA AND COMMUNITY. WE PAY OUR RESPECT TO THEIR ELDERS PAST AND PRESENT AND EXTEND THAT RESPECT TO ALL ABORIGINAL AND TORRES STRAIT ISLANDER PEOPLES TODAY. This week, we celebrate the NAIDOC Round within the Central Rivers League. Celebrated by the AFL as the Sir Doug Nicholls Round, this round epitomizes unity and strength between indigenous and nonindigenous people alike, through sport. A comment from Quambatook footballer, current Swan Hill district local and proud Kalkadoon man from Mount Isa Tobie Cameron:

“Reconciliation week is a special time of the year to all Aboriginal and Torres Straits Islander people. It is a time where Australia comes together to recognise our cultural heritage, the contributions that make it the way it is today has. This is a time for reflection and to keep building on the tracks that will determine our future. Being an Aboriginal man makes me feel a little bit special because it’s when we Indigenous mob see how Australia recognises our mob and land that we live on, Aboriginal culture is one of the oldest living cultures that walked the earth, being part of that shows how strong our culture is and forever can be. I have also had the honour to design our clubs football jumper for Round 10 against Moulamein. It shows community and connections to football being one team, one tribe. And the netball dresses show the strength of our warriors that stood and fought for our land and culture.” We strongly encourage each and every club to take a moment to reflect this weekend on what the NAIDOC week means to you personally and importantly, the wider community. We challenge you to reach out to your local indigenous corporation and delve deeper into the vibrant and intricate culture of our First Nations people.

WORDS FROM OUR CLUBS M AC O R N A T I G E RS “Strengthening Connections” – Indigenous Round 10th July 2021 IN JUST A FEW SHORT YEARS, A SMALL, SIMPLE EVENT, DESIGNED TO CELEBRATE THE POWERFUL ROLE SPORT CAN HAVE IN THE LIVES OF INDIGENOUS PEOPLE – AND TO EDUCATE THE NON-INDIGENOUS ABOUT BARAPA BARAPA CULTURE – HAS BLOSSOMED INTO SOMETHING MUCH, MUCH MORE. This weekend, the Golden Rivers Football Netball League celebrates indigenous round, which has its roots at the small, pioneering club of Macorna. In 2017, working closely with local elders Uncle George McGee and Aunty Phoebe, both now deceased, Macorna Football Netball Club approached another GRFNL club, Wandella, to designate one of the 2018 home and away clashes as an indigenous game. Macorna chose Wandella because both clubs sit on unceded Barapa Barapa land. So in June 2018, the first indigenous match was played at Macorna’s home ground and the event has grown in size, stature and significance every year since. It’s now a league-wide celebration and viewed as a highlight each season, with many teams holding smoking ceremonies, wearing specially-designed uniforms and playing with balls emblazoned with First Nations art. At the time of the first celebration, Uncle George described it as a wonderful way to recognise “all indigenous players who have, and are, participating in football and netball” in the league.

FOOT

“We hope the indigenous round will break down a lot of barriers that are affecting both the non-indigenous and indigenous people, with the theme being that as indigenous people, we want to walk with you, not against you,” he said.

In a message in The Record at the time, Uncle George said he never expected to see his culture celebrated in such a way and also explained the transformative power of sport he’d witnessed first-hand. “(When) my wife and I came to Kerang to live and look for work, the first thing my wife did was have my grandchildren involved in sport. This was a turning point for the boys and girls to participate in Little Athletics, football and netball,” he said. Member of Macorna’s Indigenous Round organizing group, Jo Bear, said the round was about much more than wearing custom-made jumpers and bibs. “It’s about building relationships and hearing stories and experiences from our local indigenous people. It’s about providing a safe space for important conversations that we all need to have, to begin. Over the years since we began this event, Macorna’s players, coaches, committee and supporters have been so fortunate to learn a small bit about the world’s oldest continuous living culture – that of indigenous Australia. And we are all richer for it,” she said. Jo said Aunty Phoebe – who had a daughter who player her junior netball at Macorna – was generous in sharing her time and stories with the club before she passed away. “Aunty Phoebe, as well as Uncle George, often talked about how important they felt sport was and what a big role clubs like ours had in shaping young lives. That’s a responsibility we take very seriously and it’s why we’re proud and humbled to be able to continue holding this round, to honour them and their legacy,” she said. Greg Whinfield, President of Macorna FNC also shared this view and added, “As is always the case, there’s a mountain of work that goes on behind the scenes in getting the round happening each year. There is a great team of people who have worked tirelessly to make this day work, as well as many others at the league and other clubs, who go above and beyond, because they have a real passion for what this round means, so thank you.”

WORDS FROM OUR CLUBS TYNTYNDER

NAIDOC WEEK IS 4 - 11 JULY AND THIS YEAR’S THEME – HEAL COUNTRY – CALLS FOR STRONGER MEASURES TO RECOGNISE, PROTECT AND MAINTAIN ALL ASPECTS OF ABORIGINAL AND TORRES STRAIT ISLANDER CULTURE AND HERITAGE. As Community and Country we have been through so much together that we need to come together and HEAL. TFNC encourage all individuals to do their part in embracing the history, cultural knowledge and values of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. We’re really proud of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander players, Committee and members we have at our club and want to do better to respect, celebrate & honour Country and Community. Club legend and current player Olly Wise is the man we have to thank for our NAIDOC week design, “When I did that design it was Tyntynder’s 100 year anniversary so I made it ‘Tyntynder’s 100 year journey with the Indigenous Warriors.’ The bird represents us as a Club and the dots with the boomerangs at the start of the dots is where it began to where they finish at the other boomerangs is the 100 year path.” Olly shared that to have the Seniors and A Grade Netballers wear his design is amazing and to have this round is an honour and privilege. NAIDOC round means a lot to Olly, “I’m very humbled to be apart of Tyntynder Football Club’s journey and I see this as a stepping stone to recognition, understanding and reconciliation. One love, one mob, we’re all in this journey together. Go Doggies” Club Vice President and Player Mark Corrie loves his Club, “It’s the people that make this Club what it is and the people in it are amazing. That’s why we like hanging out there because it makes us all feel like we belong to something bigger than ourselves, no matter what or who you identify with.”

They were created by local artist Tobie Cameron. After being given a simple brief of the local geography, Tobie expanded that brief with his insight and design skill, but even he was surprised at how well the final products have turned out. The Mallee Eagles community takes this opportunity to thank Tobie for

the fantastic final product we will all see today, and also to Danny Fraser who approached Tobie on our club’s behalf to be involved in this project. “The cultural background of the design is of the Lalbert Creek running into Lake Lalbert on country land. The Eagles soaring over the community watching over the footballers, netballers and all spectators keeping us safe”. The Jumpers and Bibs have created a lot of interest within the Mallee Eagles community and we feel sure they will add to the occasion that NAIDOC week brings each year to the whole Central Murray & Golden Rivers districts.

THE WANDELLA FOOTBALL NETBALL CLUB ARE BOTH HONOURED AND PROUD TO BE A PART OF AN ANNUAL TRADITION BETWEEN MACORNA AND WANDELLA FOR NAIDOC WEEK. IT’S IMPORTANT TO WFNC TO PARTICIPATE IN THE INDIGENOUS ROUND AS IT’S A FANTASTIC OPPORTUNITY TO HIGHLIGHT, RECOGNISE AND CELEBRATE THE CONTRIBUTION THAT ABORIGINAL AND TORRES STRAIT ISLAND PEOPLE MAKE TO SPORTING CLUBS AND THE WIDER COMMUNITY.

This will be our 3rd year playing against Macorna and a round the club looks forward too each season. Our Senior footballers will wear a unique Indigenous jumper, netballers will play with indigenous bibs, while our spectators will wear polo’s all designed by our very own Lauren Murray, daughter of Lloyd and Lil Murray. The design incorporates animal tracks that are relevant to the Wandella area as well as incorporating the symbol of a

communal water hole that all are involved in to replicate the club and its community values. The day is thoroughly enjoyed by all ages and is not only about the game of football and netball but education and learning into the Aboriginal traditions and cultures including smoking ceremony, playing of didgeridoo, aboriginal art and much more. What does Indigenous round mean to you? “Acknowledging and celebrating the rich history of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people” Logan “ Embracing, acknowledging and remembering our First Nations people.” Beth “ To me it means the world just to be out there playing with my brothers and celebrating the history of the aborigine people.” Michael “ Indigenous rounds are not just about working towards better understanding and reconciliation, but also about celebrating the contribution First Nations people make to sporting clubs and our community.” Hayley “ It’s a round to celebrate and commemorate the people that have come before us. It’s inclusive of everyone, but it’s about recognising how far we’ve come.” Aliesha

BALRANALD J U LY 1 0 VS T Y N T Y N D E R It was another great footy day last week with the temperature not getting into double figures. All our teams tried their best but we returned home without a victory. Seniors: Our boys played well enough but could not convert on the scoreboard and it appears that our confidence is lacking. Our better players on the day were Jordan Wilkins, Col Andrews, Ben Jones, Jack Salau, Tom Salau, Michael Graham and Harrison Soraggi. Reserves The Ressies had high hopes before the game and they like the Seniors could convert on the scoreboard. Better players were Yodok Soille (BFC cash),Jack Farnsworth (Mug of the Day), Paul Jealous (BFC cash), Jack Campain (BFC cash), Quinton Davis, Bailey Brougham (BFC cash), Ben Mahon, Mick Linnett, Jayo Rivers and Ol Blue. The Juniors: The Under 14’s tried their best and were beaten by a better team on the day. Better players were Nick Davies (Umpires award), Chase Militto (Coaches award), Cam Matarazzo (Most improved), Cruz Jolliffe (Canteen award), Ryan Jackson (Subway & Headspace Footy) and Cohen Cuddy (Pizza award). The Under 12’s played with great commitment and had great skills on a cold and wet day. Better players were Archie Alderuccio (Umpire award), Angus Potter (Coaches award), Oscar Old (Most Improved), Noah Bodinnar

(Canteen award), Hamish Matarazzo (Pizza) and Lucas Paton (Subway). Netballers: A Grade: (Lost) A Res: (Lost) B Grade: (Lost) B Res: (Lost) Under 16’s: (Lost) Under 14’s: (Lost) Social Scene: Today – Tyntynder game – Goods & Services Auction – starts at 6.00pm with tea available. Elite Athletes Day (Big Bottle Day) – starts midday 18th July – dress up as your favourite athlete. Memberships & Sponsorships: See Lisa Jolliffe to arrange your memberships for this year and Aish Gillbee for your sponsorship needs. Reserved Parking: Reserved parking is being kept to a limit this year and will be offered only to those that had parking last year. We will also be asking that those who do not sit with their car to free up their parking. Today we host Tyntynder and we wish all our football and netball teams the best.

TYNTYNDER J U LY 1 0 VS BA L R A N A L D Headspace round served to remind us what makes being part of a club so important. It’s the connections we make and feeling part of the Kennel which provides us all a huge amount of support. Thanks to the headspace team for their work and congrats to all our players who received a headspace ball. Under 12s Ricky’s boys took a bit to get going in the freezing conditions. Finding their voices made a big difference. Awards: Tyntynder Canteen-J. Spence, Sportspower-D.Kelly, McDonalds-J. Coffey, Subway-S.Hovenden, Café @41-B. Spence, Ian Ray-M.Slorach Under 14.5 Tyntynder 62 Nyah 80 An excellent game and the boys gave it their all to this top side - a solid third quarter just wasn’t enough to get the points. The Nyah crew saved their best til last and completely cleaned up in the fourth. Ressies Tyntynder 8 Nyah 79 On a pretty dismal day, we couldn’t seem to get it through to the forward line to make an impact on the scoreboard. Nyah proved their top side status. LAKE BOGA J U LY 1 0 VS C O H U N A K A N GAS U/12 football suffered their first unofficial loss of the season , just some tweaking required and the juggernaut will be back on track. Best were Jake Steer, Reef Mulligan, Axel Kirsten, TC Colville, Bullet Anderson and Vin Mobillio u/14.5 unfortunately were on school holidays and didn’t turn up to play, some say they were in the Gold Coast , mentally, judging by their performance.Ah well there’s always next week .Best were Meat Pye, Will Holmes, Zac Palmer, Mitch Taylor, Macca Neil, Lachie Bull, Cooper Brymer, Noah Noble. The Colts , still with key teammates on senior duties , overcame a determined and physical opposition to come home strong winners.Best were Young Rig, Xavier Sherlock, Brodie Palmer, Cody Anderson, Rhys Benfeild and Burner. In the Reserves a free flowing , frollicking, masterful and unprecedented display of football was dished up with finals being talked up after the game. Best Trippy,Angus Jones, Horse, Cooper Fox and Cody Mirtschin.

A Res – LB 34 def by T/M 46 It was not an ideal start to the game for our girls trailing by 6. However, the game was not out of reach as they kept trying to reduce the margin, outscoring them 11 to 9 in the third. Unfortunately, the girls were defeated by 12. B Grade – LB 44 d T/M 18 It was a close start to the game with a 6 goal lead after the first quarter. But the girls held their opponents to just one goal in the second to win the game by 26. Keep the wins coming ladies. B Res – LB 65 d T/M 9 This was the girls second win for the season as they proved too strong for their opponents in a showering of goals. 18 & U – No Game 16 & U – LB 31 d T/M 25

The Senior team put a lid on last week’s jubilant celebrations to deliver what everybody ,except some media commentators thought , an expected, and in the end, confident , comprehensive and complete victory over a struggling Saints. Well done boys , now for three in a row. Best; Crooksy, Ding, Chicca, Frosty, Dog Filo and Gus Monfries.

It was 4 all after the first quarter and looked like it was going to be a nail biter to the end. However, in a second quarter blitz, we added 15-4 to secure the four points to eventually win the game by 6.

Netball Results

The margin was 9 and half time and this was also the final margin as the girls were unable to reduce the margin in the second half. Bad luck girls, an awesome effort to keep working hard in the second half of the game.

Headspace Round – Congratulations to Katie Hepburn and Kaly Moore for receiving Player of the Match in their games. A Grade – LB 45 d T/M 34 In a low scoring first quarter, we trailed by 3 at the first break. This trend however did did not continue as the goals started flowing and our opponents kept to just 5 in the second to eventually win by 11 in a great win.

14 &U – LB 28 def by T/M 37

12 & U – LB 14 d T/M 6 This was a great win for our girls in which as the game progressed the goals started to come. In a number of positional changes, our players showed their versatility to win by 8.

NYAH NYAH WEST UNITED J U LY 1 0 VS TO O L EY BUC M A N A N GATA N G After a week off, we headed into town to take on Tyntynder on what was a good day for footy & netball. However, some of the results didn’t reflect the good conditions, especially the disappointing result for the seniors. Good luck to Cameron Henson in his 50th club game this weekend. FOOTBALL RESULTS Seniors: NNWU 4.9.33 defeated by Tyntynder 11.11.77 The Seniors really struggled to get into the game, beaten by a more determined Tyntynder side. While we had plenty of opportunities, we struggled to convert our efforts into effective forward entries. Best players: Adrian Knee, Campbell Everitt, Jake Wilkinson, Cal Dobbin, Jaydyn Stirling, Rhys Burge. Reserves: NNWU 11.13.79 defeated Tyntynder 1.2.8 The Reserves played some good football, attacking the contest strongly and moving the ball well. The defenders stood up strong, making it hard for the opposition to score. Even though we came away with the win, there is still areas of improvement that can be worked on for the remaining games. Doey’s Meats Award – Cooper Andrews; Tasco Award – Allister Pretty; Grand Hotel Award – Tim O’Brien; Drover Contracting – Sean O’Reilly; Swan Hill Pool & Spa and Swan Hill Garage Doors Most Determined – Jacob Pitts. Colts: NNWU 7.6.48 defeated by Tyntynder 9.8.62 This was a see-sawing game for the Colts, with the lead changing during the course of the game. While we had our chances to win, in the end, the boys weren’t good enough in the end. However, the boys need to keep at it & listen to their coaches as they are still a chance to play finals this year. Murray’s Incentive 1 – Oliver Boulton; Murray’s Incentive 2 – Lachlan Bates; Pizza Kitchen – Charlie Boulton; Town & Country – Jackson Hopkins; Nutrien Ag Solutions 1 – Aaron Threadgold; Nutrien Ag Solutions Hat – Mitchell Grinham. Under 14.5: NNWU 13.2.80 defeated Tyntynder 9.8.62 While the Under 14.5’s started the game up strongly, the Tyntynder team fought back well to take the lead during the last quarter. Fortunately for us, we were able to seize a few opportunities and score, leading to a hard fought win.

V & S Andrews – Korben Bird; Coaches Endeavour – Max Thompson; Koraleigh Store – Oliver Stewart; Trainers Award – Issy Boulton; Subway – Archie Mitchell. Under 12: NNWU vs Tyntynder It was tough conditions for our youngest footballers, with the fog & dew making playing difficult. However, the team battled away strongly and everyone seemed to enjoy themselves. Coaches Award – Ben Rogers; Koraleigh Store – Aiden Rogers; Growtek – Aiden Evans; Classic Fish Shop – Oliver Partington; Subway – Maverick Bird NETBALL RESULTS A tough day on the netball courts with only one win and a couple of close losses. However, the teams are sticking together and working hard and hopefully, more wins are just around the corner, maybe even this afternoon. A Grade: NNWU 33 Tyntynder 46 Best player: Gemma Hendy & Aleesha Flanagan A Res: NNWU 27 Tyntynder 64 Best player: Nandia Brabham B Grade: NNWU 34 Tyntynder 40 Best player: Tianna Molloy & Gemma Saul B Res: NNWU 32 Tyntynder 27 Best player: Gemma Pianura & Kristy Shadbolt Under 16: NNWU 5 Tyntynder 30 Best player: Wynta Mitchell Under 14: NNWU 14 Tyntynder 35 Best players: Summer-Lee Wilson Under 12: NNWU 19 Tyntynder 26 Best players: Ruby Butler & Ella Threadgold SOCIAL NEWS Keep track of the upcoming social events on the club’s Facebook page. TOOLEYBUC-MANANGATANG J U LY 1 0 VS N YAY N YA H W E ST U N I T E D A strong first quarter wasn’t enough to get the seniors their first win for the year with the boys going down by 8 goals in the end. Best players – Jack Apinks, Zdenek Hostalek, Danny Main, Gareth Grant & Ryan Domaille. The ressies battled hard all game but in the end found the magpies a bit too strong. Awards: Tooleybuc Sporting Club – Jonathan Chislett, Swan Hill Packaging –Jake Budde, Mallee Physio – Harper McNicol, Amaretto Almonds – James Downing. The colts put in a terrific effort against the top of the table boga side with the end margin not being a true reflection of how even the game actually was. Awards: Mallee Physio - Ryan Domaille, WFI – Mackie Rogers, Sunrise Ag – Jake Foley, Pooles & Associates – Harper McNicol. One of the great success stories of the season continues to be the U14’s who notched up their second win in a row with everyone continuing to gain a lot of self confidence & realising their great potential. Awards: JA Electrical – Rhys Bergman, Pearsons Grain – Rydar Morris, West Farmers Insurance – Cam Fisher, Subway – Jett Funnell. In arguably the match of the day the U12’s put in another huge performance to unofficially remain undefeated for the

season. Awards: GoFarm – Jules, Truck Specialist – Oliver, Pearsons Grain – Jed, Subway – Noah. And the latest Manang Hotel Auskick award went to Lane. Netball Notes: Another week at Manangatang allowed us to get even more used to those multiple coloured lines. The 12 and Under girls stuck tight for the first three quarters. Some beautiful patches of play, use of channels to bring the ball down the court and also plenty of pressure applied in defence, resulted in lots of turnovers being taken. Tayce Fisher moved the ball particularly well through the midcourt. Congratulations to the 14’s on a lovely little win, 37-28. Ally Grace showed her team spirit and was acknowledged accordingly with the Headspace Award. A really tough game for the 16’s with Boga coming out strong. Although the girls won the third quarter, we couldn’t make the comeback. A shout out to Ella Foley who played a ripper game, while Alannah Taylor thoroughly deserved the Headspace Award. Although versatility was lacking in B Grade this week, the girls kept with LB in the first. A lapse in the second quarter meant catch

up for the remainder of the game though. Awards to Haylea Hazlett for a consistent four quarters in the mid court and to Tara Andrews for a great defensive game. Well done to Paige who was awarded the Headspace Award. B Reserve were still minus any motivational speeches from Sarah. Liv Wilson received the main award for awesome work in defence and providing assistance down the court, while Liv Murphy was awarded the coaches for effort in attack. Special mention to Jess for displaying her versatility in goals. A fantastic effort from all of the girls saw A Res come away with a win. Strong defensive pressure from Emma Edo and the ball moved well down to our goalies who finished it off. Four quarters of great teamwork and leadership saw Leonie Kentish collect the Headspace Award. A great start to the game by the A grade girls who unfortunately fell away later on. We will keep working towards those four consistent quarters. We are looking forward to hopefully getting a few more wins on the board against Nyah this Saturday.

SWAN HILL J U LY 1 0 VS M A L L E E E AG L E S Today we host the Mallee Eagles in the revised draw in what will be some great action on the court/field. Today we also hold our 2021 Ladies Day. Karla Reed has put a lot of work into the day and should be a great day!

Swans are always highly anticipated and last Saturday was no exception with Swans winning well and holding on to 3rd spot. The Swans take on league leaders mallee Eagles today in what will be a great contest.

Results last week against the Kangas:

Football

Netball The young 12 and under side battled hard but went down in the end against the Tigers. Award winners Daneaka Nueschafer (McDonalds) and Willow Arentz (Subway). The 14 and under side also came up against strong opposition and couldn’t quite get over the line. Award winners Mia Wong Chon Lew (218) and Milan Arentz (Subway). The 16 and under played a great game of team netball to win well. Award winners Georgie Cameron (Club Meal) and Ava Seymour (Pearsons). It was an exciting ame of under 18 netball last Saturday with the Swans prevailing in the end. Award winners Georgia Craig-Neal (SHFNC) and Amy Simpson (Beauty Spot). B res game was neck and neck for most of the game with the Swans just going down. Award winners Tegan Hore (Paper Scissors Rock) and Emma Doherty (Beauty Spot). The Tigers were too strong in B Grade last Saturday with Swans better players Chloe Garvie (Meagan Kelly Massage) and Chelsea Mazzarella (Aspire). A Res continued on their winning way against strong opposition. Award winners Julia Amezdroz (Meagan Kelly Massage) and Tess Meney (Bean Hopper). The A Grade games between the Tigers and

The U12s came up against stronger and taller opposition but tried very hard in the slippery and cool conditions. Award winners Lola Patterson (McDonalds), Charlie Gracia (Kip McGrath), Tal Hinton (Canteen), Lenny Ryan (Thurs Night Meal), Jace Lloyd (Senior Football). The U14.5 were missing a couple of players but had a good win against the Tigers. Award winners Seamus Doherty (Thurs Night Tea), Paddy Hufer (seniors), Sonny Beasy (Canteen), Lane Cardenas (Pearsons), Harry Scott (McDonalds) and Bodhi Kelly (Pioneer). The colts couldn’t follow up their victory the week earlier but did come up against a strong Tigers side. Award winners Jem Sibley (Seniors), Darby Meney (Pearsons), Shannon Polglase (Pizza Kitchen), Will Garvie (Thurs Night Meal), Kaleb Ricjards (Canteen) Will Girdwood (Cruz Clothing). The reserves battled hard but went down in the end to the Tigers. They have a crucial game today against the Eagles in regards to a finals berth. Beer club award went to Spencer McKenzie. The senior side still with a few out pressured the Tigers and an upset was brewing last week. The Tigers got a few late to win the game but was a gteat effort from the Swans. It’s a big game against the Eagles today. Beer club award went to Toby Thoolen. Good luck to all sides today!

MACORNA TIGERS J U LY 1 0 VS WA N D E L L A Congratulations to Toby Whinfield who played his 200th junior Club game last week. Massive effort to a kid who is only 17. Thank you to everyone who stuck around for our annual Goods and Services Auction last week, it was a great success and we couldn’t have done it without the support of everyone who donated. Netball Under 12s this week were amazing in defence they all tried their very hardest and have improved so much to stay with their players. Well done girls keep it up. Awards MMWFP Bella Higgs, Tiff Bartram award Briney Ferris U14 – We were as proud as we were cold on Saturday watching the girls play. Every single player on our team had a cracking game and their defensive pressure was on fire! The amount of tips & intercepts our girls got was amazing. Awards went to Kiera & Miley. U17 – What a win!! Each and every girl had that fire in their belly and really fought for every ball. We came out firing in the first and Ultima just couldn’t catch up. A whole team effort, well done. Awards to Shamana & Jodie B res - Everyone tried their hardest, but unfortunately our goals just weren’t going in. All the girls tried hard and didnt drop their heads all game. Awards this week went to Alex and Kassidy. B Grade - With a new lineup the girls started off strong. Denai proved she’s a force to be reckoned with at both ends of the court shooting alongside Sam. Sherri, Leah & Tay moved the ball thru the mid court perfectly. While Lee & Jordy clicked in defence, putting amazing pressure on the shooters. Unfortunately, Ultima took home the

win but there was some great play from the girls. Awards: Exchange: Jordyn Simpson, Cruisin Coffee: Leah Lacy A grade - WOOHOO! A win. We played like a bunch of stars and everything finally came together for us after weeks of hard work. So happy that the things we are practicing are starting to show and the little things are becoming the change we see. Sammi, Jazz and Meg were unreal and took home awards. Football Fourths – What a great effort today with wet slippery conditions. Our attack ball was first class as handballs and bounces were out. Backline stood tall all day. Nice to see even team contributions from smallest to biggest kids. Awards: Jaxson, Hayden, Rivers, Cooper Thirds – A great show of sportsmanship from both sides today, with both teams going in heavily undermanned. Massive thanks to all U14 players. Our side were able to jump off to a great start early in the game, controlling the play from there on. Its great to see the team’ progress with the groups accountabilities we hold of each other. Awards: Ayden Fletcher, Cloughy, Kody Borchard Reserves – Boys had a tough day. Great team effort. It wasn’t ideal conditions, but the boys kept at it for all four quarters which resulted in a win. Awards: Kylie Pearce, Paul Lacy, Shannon McIntosh Seniors – We hosted Ultima today, we knew it would be tough day as Ultima was chasing their first win. Our boys started out strong, Hirdy strong in defence, with Mitch helping out, we lapsed in second and third and gave Ultima the led. Grady with some great run setting up in the last but Ultima held onto the lead by 2 points. Awards: Grady, Hirdy & Mitch

It was a fresh start to the day at Wandella, with the Under 14’s commencing in slippery conditions. The boys battled hard all game, but the young Bombers proved to strong, taking out a big win. Better players were S.Kelly, T.Perry, W.Gilchrist, B.Kelly and H.Humphreys.

The under 14’s didn’t have time to feel the cold as they ran hard all game and had a very comfortable win much to the delight of young Paddy Thompson who was tooting the car horn at them.

The Under 17’s jumped back onto the winners list with a bang, taking control of the game from the first bounce. Although there was some inaccurate kicking in front of goal, the boys managed to come away with a 74-point win, final scores Nully 11.13 – 79 to 0.5 – 5. George finished the morning game with 6-goals, and later managed to add to the tally in his first game of Seniors! Better players were C.Fawcett, S.Kelly, D.Kelly, A.Herman and J.Herman.

Awards - Mon Kelly and the quiet achiever Gracie Humphries.

The Reserves kept their top 2 chances alive with a hardfought win over the fourth placed Bombers. Ralphy was again on song up forward, kicking another 5 goals, while Luke Murray pitched in with 2 in his first game back for the year. Better players were D.Kelly, J.Vearing, Z.Sullivan, C.Fawcett, H.Pollington and L.Whitbourne.

Nullawil 43 def Wandella 36

The Senior game kicked off with both teams having 7 scoring shots in the first quarter, however it was our accuracy in front of goal that resulted in a four-goal lead at quarter time. The Bombers had the better of us in the second quarter, stemming the margin to 18 points at the main break. An 8 goal to 4 second half seen us take away a 41-point win. Andrew Casey was the main goal kicker with 6. Better players were A.Casey, M,Quigley, M.Barry, A.Forrester, R.Smith and J.Bamford.

Nullawil 44 def Wandella 26

The Under 17’s were keen to play their nearest rivals, with Bella Gilchrist outplaying her opponents and bombing the goals in she was deservingly awarded the best on court. Nullawil 53 def Wandella 18 The A Grade jumped out of the blocks in the first quarter with a handy lead and luckily they did as it was a very even game from then on. Best players were the defences in Zoe Ferrier and Meg Hogan who worked hard for the four quarters. The B Res were too strong for the Bombers and had an easy win. Young guns Holly Fawcett and Regan Kelly made it very difficult for their opponents and took out the awards. Nullawil 53 def Wandella 18. Last game was the B Grade where we welcomed back new mum Shelley Coles, while Jayne Demeo (Hewitt) returned to where she learnt to play and she hadn’t forgotten. Jayne is now that person who can say “I played with your mum!” Nullawil 54 def Wandella 36 Awards Jac Watts who played 2 games, one in defence in A grade and the other as goal shooter and to Jayne Demeo.

MURRABIT J U LY 1 0 VS N U L L AW I L L Football Back on our home deck for a late start to the footy. Quambatook managed to find two boys keen for a game of footy in the U14.5’s so a scratch match of around 14 a side was an entertaining start to the day. The Reserves dominated the first official game of the day with a 201 point victory. Luke Nyko managed to snag 8 goals whilst 12 others contributed to the 31 goals. It was a mixture of youth and experience dominating play with Hein, Gillen and Nyko being supported by Wilkinson, McKnight and Wood. Award Winners: Blake Wilkinson (Greg Dickson), Darcy Gillen (CluBarham), Archer McKnight (Sh’Marnas Place) & Ashton Wood (Car Wash) The seniors were in the game but could not hold on in the final term. Strong performances from Marc O’Neil, Nathan O’Toole, Nathan Morrow and Kyle Keane in the middle were well supported down back by Mick Grant and Josh Bray. Another highlight for the day was Ben Gillingham picking up his 3rd straight Mystic Park Hotel award, must be time to take mum and dad out for tea now… hold off til next week and you can invite Grace. Award Winners: Nathan Morrow (Royal Hotel), Ben Gillingham (Mystic Park Hotel) & Brayden Turvey (Elders Barham). Netball U12 awards: Most discipline - Maddy Keath, Canteen – Ella Henry, JMM socks – Lyla Morton, Subway – Alexis

McKnight, Macy Bray and Georgia Carse, Drinker – Charlotte Keath, Spitty lollies – Pippy Morton. The B graders had a closer game than the previous encounter with Quamby and had to really pull together to halt a fast finishing quamby team. Luckily the girls had a great start which was enough to put them just out of reach on the scoreboard. Ashea Bujdoso (Tailored Peach) dominated all over the court bringing confidence and consistency to the team while Tyler Harrison (Little shoe shop) stepped up to B grade exceptionally well. Her tight defence against a talented shooting line up was impressive. The girls rallied when quamby came back at them and the defence stepped up and both the goalies settled and were slotting the shots in when they were needed in the second half to finish 9 goals ahead. The b res game was a little one sided, it was a great defensive effort from our girls holding the opposition to single figures. Libby Miatke (Rulcifys) was cutting off balls into quamby’s attack left, right and centre with so many intercepts. Jess Morrow (Lingenberg $30) was the little pocket rocket delivering the ball into attack with Sharni Maher (Tailored Peach) linking the ends of the court with excellent running and ball handling. Well done girls, this week will be a tougher encounter against Nully. Should be some great games of netball against Nully this round, go blues!

Football

Under 12’s Another incredible week of netball for our youngsters with the kids doing us proud on the court by learning, listening and having fun. Well done to all those who participated! Awards this week went to Maddyn and Harper.

Reserves It was a battle just getting a team on the park last week, thanks to Murrabit for giving us some players to make up a team. Rhys jumped in to help the boys out, Luke Boyd tackled ferociously and Joel used his pace to get plenty of the footy. Jarara, Jai and Rhett did their best to stem the flow of goals but they had their work cut out. Chilli gave it his best despite carrying an injury.

B Grade What a game this was to watch!! You could hear the excitement in the crowd as the girls came so close to undefeated Murrabit! We welcomed K.Bennett into the team this week who did not miss a beat! J.Bennett and H.Tuohey worked brilliantly in the mid court, having no issues getting that ball into the goalies. Awards: H. Tuohey - Exchange Hotel K. Bennett- Mallee Physio B Reserve This was never going to be an easy game for the girls, especially with so many out this week. No matter how much they were getting beaten on the score board, the girls never dropped their heads and kept playing their game until the end. I can’t wait to see them bring that same strength and determination to the court again this week! Awards: M. Meade- Exchange Hotel P. Jones- Mallee Physio E. Tovey - Mystic Park Hotel

Best players: J. Greenhill, J. Bremner, R. Lowan, D. Lever, S. Gillingham, C. Thomas . Seniors Straight kicking was a feature of Quamby’s game last week as by half time they had 8 straight on the board and a 14 point lead. New player Adam Barclay and also Jason Butty booted 4 majors for the day. Dylan Pascoe took on the contest all day and Crusher and Ash held the defence together allowing Henry only one goal. Rick was dynamic through the mid-field making the most of Bradders great ruck work. Jongers played a hard running game, the boys finishing with a 30 point win. Goals: J. Butty 4, A. Barclay 4, M. Bradbury 2, R. Wild 1, W. Collicoat 1. Best players: A .Barclay, J. Schlitz, R. Wild, D. Pascoe, L. Jongebloed, J. Butty.

ULTIMA J U LY 1 0 VS H AY Ultima netball record notes from Round 9 12&Under Ultima 16 Macorna 0 Great game by everyone, can see amazing improvements in all the girls. Awards went to Charli Conway and Reve O’Toole. 14&Under Ultima 49 Macorna 13 A great game girls. It started off a bit untidy, but we settled in the end. Well done to Ella, Indi O and Maddy on the awards. Get better soon Jayda. 17&Under Ultima 35 Macorna 31 Ultima was surprised by a very strong Macorna side to be 7 down at quarter time. A strong third quarter saw them reduce the margin to 4, however this was as close as they could get. Awards went to Millie Hinton, Lily Grey and Bridgette Zucco. B Reserve Ultima 36 Macorna 19 We had the help of the talented Davidson sisters, Kobe and Isis. It was a very close game until half time

and then we were able to run away with it. It’s always great to see the team pull off things we’ve worked on at training. Awards went to Elly, Kobe and Isis. B Grade Ultima 31 Macorna 10 We started off very slowly with goals not dropping in, but luckily our defensive end were on fire with Rach and Bee intercepting everything. Megan and Trine started to hold their bodies well and goals started dropping in. Keeley and Brooke found the right angles around the ring and Chaz seemed to have a hand in every play. All players got an award. A Grade Ultima 16 Macorna 22 Macorna had the jump on us from the get go and we were on the back foot for the majority of the game. An extremely low scoring game meant defenders from both teams dominated. Fliss, Brass and Lou were standouts as usual and kept us within arms reach right until the end. Plenty to work on if we hope to make finals this year, but we are confident we can turn it around.

HAY LIONS J U LY 1 0 VS U LT I M A A Grade Moulamein 66 def Hay 40

Under 17’s Hay 40 def Moulamein 8

The Hay’s girls played some of their best netball as a team this season with a very competitive match against Moulamein. Jade Auldist and Hannah Stewart (Ian Bunyan Players Player) played seamlessly in attack with Hannah’s confident approach resulting in good positional play and goals. Ellie Jamieson (South Hay Hotel Best on Ground) held her defensive stance for 3 seconds forcing the goals to shoot under pressure. Emily Headon (L.Houston Coaches Award) supported the defenders and used some strategies from training to build her leading skills to bring the ball into the attacking end.

The Hay girls coming off their first win of the season and up against a team that beat them two months earlier. Dimity McLean at GS was providing an excellent target, while Ruby Cattanach at GA was everywhere and hitting the scoreboard. Alice Caldow (The Spot award) at WD and Emma Johnston at GD blanketed their opponents in defence. Half time saw the young Lions determined to push on to get a dominant win and that’s what they did as Katie Howard (Hay Newsagency award) moved to Centre and combining with Janee Davies (Hay Calesthenics award) dominated the midfield. Emily Caughey at GK defended everything, while in the last quarter Lucy Davies’ pinpoint passing in mid court kept the scoring flowing.

This was a game played with high intensity and it was pleasing to see Hay showing some improvement since they last met with Moulamein. Moulamein held a 12 point lead at half time, however despite Hay’s best efforts they were unable to stop Moulamein from running away with the win. Ruby Cattanach (Best on Court Award and Players’ Player Award) played an impressively strong, accurate and consistent game in Hay’s attack. Grace Christensen (Coach’s Award) B Reserve Hay 31 def Moulamein 27 What an absolute nail bitter this was. Hay led the first two quarters by 7 but by the time third quarter time came Hay was only up by 2. With the game on the line the defence duo of Mardi Davis-Flack (Hannah Mcguffick Hairdressing award) and Jessica Weymouth worked great together blocking those goals in the circle. Verity Auldist (Tantrum Hair and Beauty award) also worked that defence out and around the circle. Super sub Emma Johnston (Harrisons IGA award) and our newest addition Sarah Houston (Players Pick) were amazing mid court and feeding the balls in to our star shooters Sarah Bunyan and Trish Jamieson.

Under 14’s Hay 26 def Moulamein 18 Thank you to Maggie Shields (Guts and Determination award) and Hannah Jameison who played their 14’s game with confidence and played a vital position in our team. Sienna Lund (Highway Inn Motel award) worked well with Lucy Davies in the first half working the ring efficiently with Poppy Barnes and Hannah Jameison communicating well and moving the ball down the court safely. Emily Caughey (Peter Mullins Building award) and Sophie Tapper worked together as a team in the ring getting many rebound. F Troop Hay 12 def Moulamein 4 Hay come out winners this week 12 – 4 with great teamwork and communication from all the girls. Awards this week: Prue Rutledge – Active Farmers Award, Grace Auldist - Ricks Parks and Gardens for fantastic centre work, Taylah Moore – Lions Canteen Voucher, Angel Clark Ricks Parks and Gardens.
