REPRESENTATIVE FOOTBALL OPPORTUNITIES AFL Goldfields Started its year with an opportunity that has never previously been offered to our female footballers. 30 of the Riddell FNL and Ballarat FNL top U13-15 Year-old players as well as the top 30 AFL Goldfields Women’s footballers participated in the AFL Goldfields Academy program. The program ran for 8 weeks, 4 pre and 4 post-Christmas giving all players an opportunity to develop their football skills in the lead up to the 2019 season.
Over the course of the 8 weeks 9 coaches took up the professional development opportunity giving our players some valuable one on one coaching. After the success of the trip last year, AFL Goldfields was delighted to offer 24 of our top Under 18 footballers in the region an opportunity to represent AFL goldfields in Tasmania against a “Southern Tasmania” academy side in Hobart and a “Northern Tasmania” academy side in Launceston. >

ed clubs to nominate players that already have been involved in an vironment, but could potentially ntified for Interleague, V-Line cup 18 NAB League opportunities in the e. We have invited players who not wish to excel at football but have an erness to improve their leadership
skills and develop as community footballers. Current GWV Rebels U18 Assistant Coach and GWV Rebels Futures Head Coach Emma Kent coached the side for the second year. We welcomed Ballarat U13-15 Academy Coach Anna Baxter to Assist Emma over the course of the program.
FL GOLDFIELDS FEMALE FOOTBALL SEASON 2019
ur season kicked off on Sunday 28th April giving all grades of football the opportunity to play a 14-round season. Friday and Saturday night matches were a highlight over the course of the season, allowing girls to play night footy and soak up the atmosphere in front of some of our biggest crowds. Season 2019 presented many opportunities for our female footballers to continue their development. We had representative campaigns involving age groups for U/16, U/18 Youth Girls and Open Women’s. Starting with the GWV Rebels Academy in February and continuing with involvement in the AFL Goldfields representative matches against Bendigo JFNL & AFL Western District (U16 & U18) along with games
against VAFA and SEWFL (Women’s). Our players were exposed to some quality opposition which saw their talent tested against other regions top players. Two of our AFL Goldfields Under 18 players who also participate in the GWV Rebels NAB League program were selected to represent Vic Country in the Under 18 Championships along with five girls participating in the U16 Vic Country Training Squad. These success stories outline the importance of our representative programs in allowing players across the Goldfields region to develop and grow not only as players but future leaders in football. My thanks and congratulations to all coaches and their assistants who have taken up the role of coaching our female football sides. Equally to all the GWV Rebels Academy coaches and the volunteers who helped, your efforts were greatly appreciated by the league, staff and most importantly the players. >

The BFUA and RDFUA many thanks for your assistance and commitment this year and a job well done. Many thanks to each of our clubs, their committee members and volunteers. It was an extraordinary season in many ways, and collectively you helped support me through it. As volunteers you are to be widely thanked and congratulated, both from within your own club and from myself and the league. The support from all the clubs for our representative programs was pleasing and I thank

THEME Each year, we take the opportunity to recognise important contributors and messages at various stages throughout the season. Many of these coincide with special events on the annual calendar, such as Mother’s Day, and others that are mirrored across the AFL Goldfields region, and even the AFL in some cases, such as Indigenous Round. It’s important that we take the opportunity to celebrate these special occasions throughout our season to spread key messages and to recognise those that play a large role in making our game what it is today.

ROUND 5 Indigenous Round Coinciding with the AFL’s Sir Doug Nichols Round, AFL Goldfields held its own Indigenous Round across the weekend of May 25-26. The region proudly recognises its Indigenous members and the contribution made by the Indigenous community to the development of Australian Rules football. Each of our Open Age Womens games were commenced with the bouncing of a football branded with Indigenous artwork. Many of the clubs involved used this as an award at the end of a game, and some did a similar thing with the glass boomerang that was arranged for each senior club participating. We were also fortunate for most of our senior womens games to be played on grounds that had the Indigenous flag painted in the centre circle.

ROUND 11 Women in Football Round To help recognise the valuable contribution women make towards sport, especially football, we celebrated ‘Women in Football Round’ at all games across the weekend of July 20-21. Once again, each of our Open Age Womens games were opened with a pink Sherrin football, which some clubs even handed to a chosen player at the game’s conclusion. It gave us a great opportunity to acknowledge the incredible influence women have across our competitions, in which they continue to make up increased participation and volunteer rates, and fill numerous pivotal roles at all levels throughout our industry. One of the key highlights of the round, was the bi-annual Women in Football Lunch on Friday July 19 to officially launch the commencement of the round. Guest speakers AFL Umpire Eleni Gouftsis, media personality Tiffany Cherry, AFL Kids presenter Amberley Lobo and AFLW premiership player Ellie Blackburn had those in attendance at the Ballarat Leagues Club, engaged with their interesting stories.
ROUND 13 TAC Towards Zero Round In conjunction with the other AFL Goldfields leagues, our female competitions recognised the TAC’s Towards Zero Rounds which aims to raise awareness of safe driving habits on our roads. As a way of spreading the safe-driving message, in a bid to decrease the death toll on our roads, each of our senior team captains will be straying from their usual jumper number to don the number 0 as we strive for zero deaths on our roads each year. A highly important message to spread, and one that we should all remember when travelling on the roads, especially to and from our games each weekend.

TASMANIA DEVELOPMENT TRIP The 2019 AFL Goldfields U18 representative Girls football team travelled to Tasmania during the April school holidays to play against, a “Southern Tasmania” academy side in Hobart and a “Northern Tasmania” academy side in Launceston. After the success of the last year trip, AFL Goldfields were delighted to again offer 24 players from the region the opportunity to represent AFL Goldfields. Further to the representative opportunities we included a day trip to Port Arthur, a stopover at the Ross Female Factory historic site along with a fun afternoon at the Launceston entertainment Complex. Ensuring the girls not only received an opportunity to play high standard football on AFL standard ovals, but an incredible life experience. Development Squad Coach, Emma Kent was excited to be involved for a second consecutive year. “I’ve had the pleasure to once again be a part of the Tassie Development trip and it was great to see the players not only play well but enjoy the experience off field and gain confidence within themselves,” Kent said “I would like to acknowledge the support from Rod, Scott, Krista and Anna with making this trip possible and making it another fantastic year.”

INTERLEAGUE WRAP UP WOMEN’S INTERLEAGUE
YOUTH GIRLS INTERLEAGUE
Saturday June 8th, AFL Goldfields Women’s Interleague competed against a strong Victorian Amateurs Football Association squad.
Over the weekend of Saturday June 15th, AFL Goldfields U16 and U18 Youth Girls interleague sides took on tough AFL Central Victoria sides.
The Women started their Interleague campaign with plenty of enthusiasm, certainly knowing the VAFA girls were going to be tough to contend with. VAFA came out of the blocks flying kicking 4 unanswered goals early in the 1st term, despite this the Goldfields Women kept the pressure on at each contest forcing VAFA to be precise with every position. VAFA had utilised every opportunity and by half time held convincing lead on the Goldfields Girls. During the half time break Peter Forbes addressed the playing group and asked them to keep attacking each contest with the vigour they have already shown, to cherish every possession, protect the ball carrier and get the ball forward when the opportunities present. The last half didn’t disappoint, with the Goldfields girls fighting hard on the inside, making VAFA earn every possession and giving them chances to move the ball into our forward line. VAFA continued to put the score board pressure on, finishing the game as victors for the second time. Stand out players for AFL Goldfields on the day were; Ellen Werts (Redan), Captain Abbey Bertram (Bacchus Marsh), Marilyn Elder (Gisborne), Ingrid Duffy (Redan), Hannah Beasley (Gisborne) and Robyn MacDonald (East Point Dragons). Ellen Werts also awarded best AFL Goldfields player as adjudged by the VAFA coaching staff with her dominant performance down back.

The Under 16 Youth Girls kicked proceedings off on the main oval at Marty Busch Reserve, and settled into the game well throughout the first quarter, keeping the pressure on their opposition both offensively and defensively. This paid dividends for the team, taking the lead into the quarter-time break. The two teams wrestled for the lead throughout entirety of the match. While Goldfields held the lead at three-quarter-time, AFL Central Victoria were able to replicate their half-time lead to come out narrow 5-point winners at the final siren. The finish was even more nail-biting given that the ball was locked inside Goldfields’ forward 50 with 2 minutes remaining in the game. The final score was AFL Goldfields 6.3.39 defeated by AFL Central Victoria 6.8.44. All of the girls played a fantastic game, both individually and as a team unit. Some standouts on the day were Zoe Larkins (Ballarat Swans), Paige Scott (Carisbrook), Iona Cullenward (Lake Wendouree), Charlotte Hopkins (East Point), Bethany Hucker (Lake Wendouree) and Lillee Barensden (East Point). Paige Scott also caught the eyes of the officiators on the day, with her performance earning her the Best on Ground medal adjudged by the umpires.
2019 AFL Goldfields Female Football Iona Cullenward (2 goals), Zoe Larkins (2 goals), Bethany Hucker (1 goal) and Paige Scott (1 goal) were able to hit the scoreboard for Goldfields across the game. “It’s an old cliché but football was the winner! The scoreboard said we finished second, but every girl in our squad walked away as winners. The experience of playing with and against such a talented group made for an amazing spectacle,’’ coach Jeromy Jones said. He added, “considering we (AFL Goldfields) have had limited time together the playing group jelled together really well and played a high standard of football. Even though we weren’t able to walk away with the win, we were so proud of the AFL Goldfields girls.” The Under 18 Youth Girls side took the field soon after, and weren’t to be outdone with the level of skill and excitement in their contest. From the first bounce, it was a high-pressure game, with both sides struggling to get uncontested possessions. The high-pressure game on-field was mirrored on the scoreboard with scores level going into the first break. Goldfields managed to gain a narrow 4-point lead going into half-time, however the tug-of-war continued in the third quarter with neither side able to hit the scoreboard.
“It was a hard fought contest until the final siren. The girls jelled very well, with some brilliant individual efforts across the board. The girls leadership throughout the team was a big highlight for me, not to mention the skill level we have at Goldfields is second to none, and was on full display,” co-coach Peter Curran commented. Lara Beggs (North Ballarat), Jaye Dalgleish (East Point), Frances Walsh (Redan), Nicole Steward (Gisborne), Chloe Leonard (Ballarat Swans) and Abby Coon (Creswick) were some of the standouts across the field throughout the course of the match. Mackenzie O’Neill and Jaye Dalgleish were both able to hit the scoreboard, kicking two goals each. Despite the end result, Curran said “there are so many bright futures ahead and I as a coach, feel so privileged to be a part of such an amazing bunch of girls. I can’t be any more proud of their efforts and commitment on the day.” Both coaching panels could not agree more that female footy in the Goldfields region, and beyond, has an incredibly bright future!
The finish was just as exciting in this contest, for players, coaches and spectators alike, with the ball locked in the forward 50 of the team behind on the scoreboard for the final few minutes. In the end, AFL Central Victoria put out a strong fourth-quarter finish that saw them come out 7-point victors. The final score was AFL Goldfields 4.4.28 defeated by AFL Central Victoria 5.5.35.
Yours Sincerely,
Tegan Lafranchi Netball and Female Football Administration Officer
