2019 SEASON RECORD

ACROSS MY DESK

McDonald’s Ballarat FNL Operations Manager Shane Anwyl

The McDonald’s Ballarat FNL welcome you to a split round of football and netball across the next two weeks. To kick things off we have the Ballarat hosting a Good Friday blockbuster against the Redan FNC. Ballarat coming off a loss in the senior football last week under lights against Sebastopol and Redan getting their 2019 campaign under way after a bye in round one.

A great coup for the league to have such a high caliber opposition. Junior football and netball squads will be announced shortly with details of training for the first campaign against the Riddell District FNL on Saturday 11th May 2018.

The following week (Saturday April 27th) will see the remaining games take place with two games under lights at Sunbury and Mars Stadium.

Clubs are to be congratulated on the way they work with local RSL’s to provide support and awareness for their groups who provide a valuable service in their communities. The Ballarat FNL and clubs are proud to support RSL’s through the Anzac Round each year. Interleague football and netball is gaining momentum with the senior football squad recently announced that will take on the Hampden FNL in May at Mars Stadium. We are fortunate to have Hampden coming to take on the best the BFNL A Grade netball has to offer - this being the first Worksafe Community Championship game Hampden netball has taken part in for many years.

The Ballarat FNL, along with other leagues in the AFL Goldfields region are lucky to have access to a grants program through TAC, to promote and spread the message of “Towards Zero” for road safety. Make sure your club has looked at the grants program to assist your club. Good luck to all teams competing across senior and juniors over the next two weeks, and for the easter period, stay safe if on the roads.

2019 SEASON RECORD

AT THE BAR with ‘The insider’

And Cobras Star Jake Owen

NAME: Jake Owen AGE: 24 RECRUITED FROM: Williamstown INSIDER: What do you like doing outside of footy? OWEN: Travelling and playing golf mostly (Handicap 22) INSIDER: You’re in your second year at the club and have been appointed joint captain. What does that mean to you? OWEN: It’s a great honour to be leading the club in my second season...it means a lot. INSIDER: Your’e a versatile player that could play multiple roles. What is your preffered playing position? OWEN: Midfield ideally, but Centre Half Forward seems to be the best fit for me. INSIDER: Will you be putting up your hand to play interleague if selected this season? OWEN: Definitely. I was shattered last year missing out on playing at the ‘G’ through injury. INSIDER: What is your take on the Interleague concept / representation? OWEN: I’m a big supporter of Interleague. It’s always nice to be recognised with selection. I’m still only young and would love to play for the BFNL and prove to other comps that our league is a good one.

INSIDER: What expectations do you have for Bacchus Marsh in 2019? OWEN: I expect us to make finals on the back of fulfilling our new game plan - I guess everyone wants to play finals. INSIDER: Tell us about your time at the BMFNC... OWEN: I’ve never felt so welcome. Bacchus Marsh is a good family club with a strong culture. It feels like we are all in it together both on and off the field. We win together and we lose together. I’m very happy. INSIDER: Another chapter will be written in the Bacchus Marsh v Darley showdown in Round 2. What’s your impression of the rivalry between the two? OWEN: I don’t feel it as much as others, it’s just another game for me more or less. INSIDER: How will you go about arresting the recent trend of success Darley has had over the Marsh? OWEN: Well of course we will want to start well. Hopefully a win can send a message to the rest of the competition that we are ain the mix. But to be honest, we have less focus on the opposition whover it is and would rather concentrate on implementing our game plan week in, week out. INSIDER: Whose your tip to improve in 2019? OWEN: Sunbury and Sebastopol i’m thinking. INSIDER: It’s got to be the reigning premiers East Point................and us of course!

2019 SEASON RECORD

RD 2 FOOTBALL PREVIEW with ‘Scoop’

It’s official.

Season 2019 is now well under way as we get set for another exciting split round of football. While the Grand Final replay between Melton and East Point takes centre stage, the support card of round two looms just as compelling. Reigning Premiers East Point who looked ominous in their round one dismantling of Lake Wendouree will travel to MacPherson’s Park for the showdown. Both sides have been able to build on their 2018 lists for the better and set the scene for another classic encounter. The Bloods new additions, Shaun Campbell and Dylan Stevens have had an immediate impact at their new club and will test the resilience of the Kangaroos.

But East Point remain the yardstick for mine, despite the roadtrip and Meltons 5-0 winning streak at home (from last year). The Bloods will have improved, no questions there but I expect the Kangaroos to have too many weapons forward. East Point in a close one - 9 points.

Bacchus Marsh head to Darley Park for another instalment of the local derby. The Cobras recent record against the Devils isn’t great (0-5) but under new coach Peter Davey that history has been wiped clean - he couldn’t care less. Davey is more concerned about whether the Cobras can deliver on a new game plan he has brought to the club. Compliance lasted barely 30 minutes in their round one loss to North Ballarat City and won’t be made easier by the Devils ‘defence first’ brand of footy. The Cobras will be made accountable on Darley Park, that is certain. The challenge for the Cobras this early could be too much to ask. The Devils on the otherhand overcame some early round one jitters to put pay to an improved Sunbury. The nature of the 36 point win should hold them in good stead to record their tenth win in a row at home and extend on their recent dominance over the (now) fearless Cobra - Darley by 26 points. Ballarat and Redan will kickstart the split round on Good Friday at Alfredton Oval. The Swans trailed the much hyped Sebastopol by just seven points at the final change last week to suggest they too have made a marked improvement on 2018 despite losing by 21 points. New recruits Nick Weightman

and Lachie Dawson wasted no time making their marks wih the Swans featuring among the best. Redan will have had the opportunity to study Ballarat last week having had the bye. The Lions will be keen to impress club favorite and new coach Jarret Giampaolo and correct a nine game losing streak to open last year. The Swans have enough exposed form you would think to secure the points - Ballarat by 22 points.

One of Sunbury and Melton South will remain winless at the end of round two. The Lions and the Panthers had their moments last week depite going down to Darley and Melton. Sunbury won’t need to improve a great deal on the possession front but a reversal on their conversion in front of goal will something coach Travis Hodgson will need to have addressed. The newlook Panthers on the otherhand were just 11 points down at half time against heavyweights and old foe Melton before the Bloods kicked away. Coach Heath Pritchard would have been delighted with their application before an 18 point three quarter deficit was blown out to 52 at the final siren. The Lions have the luxury of playing at home under the lights and should have enough going for them to secure the points - Sunbury by 20 points. North Ballarat City and Lake Wendouree will round out proceedings under lights at Mars Stadium. City were another team to suffer from a dose of the ‘yips’ in front of goal but their sheer weight of possession prevailed in the end over the Cobras. Meanwhile, the Lakers compounded under the wrath of a rampant East Point conceding 11 goals in the final term to lose by 101 points. Their defence in recent times has been the cornerstone of the Lakers set up so i’ll be expecting a correction in that area. North City’s onball brigade were exceptional out of stoppage last week - a recurrence of this pattern and feed to the likes of Will Young forward is an ominous sign for the Lakers. The last time these two teams met City won by 86 points! It won’t be as dominant this time but it should be comfortable nonetheless - City by 30 points

Sebastopol has the bye and will bank the four points - their only concern will be the 21 day break between hitouts in round three. Enjoy your footy!

2019 SEASON RECORD

ROUND 1 NETBALL PREVIEW by Kim Bailey

BALLARAT V REDAN

Ballarat have started off strongly in 2019 with a 15-goal victory over Sebastopol and will be looking for an even better start against Redan, who are starting off their season after having the bye in round one. Redan is on the rebuild after some significant loses in 2019. Gun shooter Ruby Parry has moved onto a coaching role in the Central Highlands whilst last year coach Kate McMahon is having a year off. So, they have a very young list, headed up by Ash Smith. Ash is coming off an ankle injury but hopefully we will right to go. Lydia Jordan and Keiarah Brookes make up a dynamic attack end for Ballarat and this is a team that may cause a few upsets this year. Ballarat to go two from two.

DARLEY V BACCHUS MARSH

Both teams are coming off similar margins against two of the leagues big guns and was just over run by more experienced players. Darley have a good base of youth with Mel Freeman and Kaylee Smith having great games on the weekend. Accuracy is an issue in both teams shooting circle and if one can lift the percentages it may be the difference between the two. Annie Hill should add some speed and skill into Bacchus Marsh’s circle and is a great pick up and will link beautifully with both Meg Collins and Kalia Ingham. This one is going to be very hard to split but think Bacchus will get their first win on the board.

MELTON V EAST POINT

East Point is coming off a close 2-point win over Lakers, with low shooting percentages nearly costing them the game. Melton also had a close game going down to cross town rivals Melton South by 3, again low percentages costing them dearly. Keely Bouldrie is a great pick up for the Bloods and it will be a fantastic contest between her and the experienced Beth Smith. Emma Farrell and Lauren Jew again showed why they are one of the most lethal combination in the competition and I think the less experienced defence line may have trouble nullifying that combination.

NORTH BALLARAT CITY V LAKE WENDOUREE

North again showed why they into the season as red-hot favourites with a comprehensive win over Bacchus in round one whilst Lakers fell two short of their first win of the season and will be desperate to get on the board. Lakers welcome back veteran defender Emma Gill to a very experienced Lakers line up and should add the extra height needed in their defensive circle. North welcome back Jordan Bibby this season who has made an immediate impact combining beautifully with Maddie Selmon. Stacey McCartin continues to dominate the mid court and it will be a fantastic match up with Kristy Walsh in the mid court. North welcome back Poppy Douglass to the team after national duties who will add flexibility to the line-up. Whilst this will be a fast-paced game, but North should get the win.

SUNBURY V MELTON SOUTH

Sunbury was certainly disappointed with their finish to 2019, where they were the dominant team in the home and away season but failed to produce their best when it counts - in the finals series. Melton South only missed the finals by one game and will be hoping to continue further this year. South’s Bonnie Cottam and Grace Valele are coming off great games and defensively will make it very tough for any attack line so the match-up against Ruth Smith will be interesting. Last round, Sunbury elevated Shelby Holter to the A grade line up and did a great job shooting at 89%. Sunbury still have Amanda Cusack to enter the team making their shooting circle even more potent. This will be a competitive game, but Sunbury will have just too much experience.

East Point should get across the line comfortably.

2019 SEASON RECORD

SEBASTOPOL NETBALL

Well it was great to get back in to the swing of things on the weekend and see the burra army out in force supporting both junior and seniors as we took to the courts against the Ballarat Swans. In the Senior netball it was fantastic to see how competitive all grades were against their opposition. Our under 19 team was defeated by a very strong team who have clearly played together for a while! The girls should be proud of the way they conducted themselves and kept the burra fight going right until the final siren. It was great to see the E Grade team take the courts going down by only 7 goals, with new faces in the team and a few girls away it’s going to be an exciting season for this group as it progresses! Our D Grade girls played a brilliant 4 quarters of netball, they looked as if they are gelling well as a team and the flow down the court was fantastic! They lost the game in a great fight!

and did an exceptional job! The team lost the game although it’s an exciting young team with lots of potential! Finals score - Ballarat 67 to Sebastopol 37. Our A Graders played a fantastic game really showing Ballarat what they are made of, it was fast paced, passing was accurate and they worked well together. Another special mention to Tahlia Watts (U/15) made her debut in Seniors and did an unbelievable job in the defensive circle. Final score- Ballarat 67 to Sebastopol 52

BEST ON COURT: A – Jo Isaac & Mads Quayle B – Libby Hutt & Loz Ogilvie C – Liv Cottiers & Flip Dodd

C Grade worked well and had some really good plays down the court which really made the game flow, they unfortunately also went down on the day but have some really positive aspects of the game to take away! It was Amity Taylor’s (U/15) debut in seniors and she played amazing with the team taking on every bit of advice she was provided! The team went down by 19 goals.

D – Hayley McIntosh & Cait Stevens

B Grade again played well, worked well together and played a great 4 quarters of netball! Libby Hutt (U/17) player her first senior game

Go Burra!!

E – Karli Boucher & Lou Proelss 19 – Bella Dodd & Sophie Nield We hope you all have a fantastic break and we look forward to catching you in round three after our bye when we take on Lakers!

BALLARAT SWAN’S CHATTER

The club’s first round encounter with the Sebastopol FNC was rather successful with all Netball grades recording strong wins and the Reserves and U/19 successfully commencing the new season with wins. Unfortunately the Seniors went down in a rather physical match. The Swans came back from a 28 point deficient at the main break to even the scores early in the last quarter but the Burra were able to apply scoreboard pressure and record a win. On this Good Friday the BFNC pay hosts to the Redan FNC who will be coming off there bye. Both clubs have a history of hard fought matches and today will be no exception.

Entry into a $500 drawn at every home game Entry for 2 to an exclusive 1860’s club members afternoon at one of our home games. $186 all it takes to join. McDONALD’S BALLARAT FOOTBALL NETBALL LEAGUE

DARLEY DIARY

Welcome to our first local derby for 2019 where we welcome the Cobras into the Devils Den and hope for a great day for everyone. These matches between the two cross-town rivals are huge events for the entire community and we take a lot of pride in how many country footy/netball fans attend our day. During the day we will stop to honor and commemorate our ANZACS. This is a solemn and historic tribute to the brave young men and women who have served this great country over the decades. The Devils had a mixed start to the season in Round 1 with only our Senior Footballers chalking a win. Our young footballers and netballers all tried hard and showed plenty of promise for the season ahead. Today our two great local clubs play for the annual Light/ Wheelahan Memorial Shield in honor of two of our own great clubmen, the late Greg Light and John Wheelahan. The coaches award for best players will be presented by Mrs Michele Light and Mrs Lucille Wheelahan.

bfnl.com.au

Our club would also like to congratulate Luther Baker on 100 senior games in Round 1. Luther has become an integral part of our senior footy club both on and off the field. His work ethic and leadership is role model material for our young men and women representing our club. Thanks Luther for your loyalty, passion and dedication to our club. We hope you play another 100 games. Just a reminder. There is nothing better than a bit of friendly rivalry, but please note the clubs Zero Tolerance Policy and Code of Conduct for all members and supporters. Help us keep the great family culture that our club oozes. To see the amount of ex players , supporters and our huge amount of little Devils around our home games is amazing, so let’s continue to show just what a great club we are.

GO DEVILS!

2019 SEASON RECORD

BACCHUS MARSH COBRA’S CHATTER Last week saw the GB Forestry Cobras travel up the highway almost as a whole club (Juniors and Seniors) on a surprisingly lovely Ballarat day, to play a strong opponent in North Ballarat City. The Seniors were in the game for the duration of the match but ultimately despite poor kicking, NBC’s ability to capitalise on the Cobras inability to keep control of the ball won out on the day. Coach Peter Davey simply said that “playing 25-30 minutes of the footy we can and need to play was nowhere near good enough”. GB Forestry Cobras: NBC:

9-9 63

9-23 77

Best: Owen, J Chisari, Burton, N Stuhldreier, Shea Our Reserves team were left to rue poor kicking for goal (3 goals 10 behinds) and simply leaving too much to do in the last quarter, which saw Coach Paul Griffiths bitterly disappointed, but showing positive signs and looking towards the games to follow with optimism. GB Forestry Cobras: NBC:

10-17 77

13-5 83

Best: La Franchi, White, Lalor, Stone, Griffiths Our Under 19s played the reigning Premiers who, if Saturday is to be a guide looked to have gone to another level. Our young men, started the game with no bench and then went two down early in the last quarter, tried all day, battled the game out manfully and very importantly never gave up. BG Forestry Cobras: NBC:

3-2 20

23-14 152

Best: Porter, Moloney, Fell, Burgess, Taylor, Timms

The GB Forestry Cobra Netballers had a really strong day winning the B, C, D & E Grade games, and leading for much of the game against the reigning A Grade Premiers. Our 19s tried hard but were beaten by a very classy and strong opponent. NBC are a traditionally strong opponent all through their netball program so well done collectively to Micka and Kaila and all the girls on a great start to the year! It was great to see the Seniors and Juniors going between grounds to support all of our GB Forestry Cobras, and those Black, Red and Yellow club colours everywhere. The GB Forestry Cobras Senior women’s team played their opening practice game this weekend so welcome back girls, it’s terrific to have you as part of our great club and ensures we have the massive cross section of all parts of male and female footy covered, which makes us such a strong and vibrant club full of wonderful volunteers, players and supporters!! As a Club we have an array of big events happening this year with particular focus on our first ever night game on Sat May 4 where the GB Forestry Cobras take on Melton, the first of what will become an annual MND fundraising games against our hometown rival Darley on Saturday June 8, and again our first ever “Cobra Drop” on AFL GF day (more details to come) so please keep that day open!

Sponsor of the week: Pegasus Farm and Sockfeeds 108 South Maddingley Road (just past BM Grammar)

Tony and family are a terrific cobra family and would love for you to visit and sample the wide variety of products they have in store.

GO COBRAS!

MELTON BLOODS BANTER Round 1 Results

A great start for our footballers in Round 1 with wins in all three grades against our arch rivals Melton South. In the morning, the Unders started their season off on a great note with a 141 point win. In a very even team contribution, we’ll give special mentions to Lambo and Nitro who played their first games for the club. Lambo impressed with his hardness at the footy, and Nitro chipped in with a nice goal in his first game of footy for over three years. In the reserves, we had a 10 point win in a low scoring contest. Sony Ericson kicked four goals for a best on ground performance. The win was full of merit considering we played a couple of players short in the second half, plus had a few others playing a bit sore. In the senior game, we had a 52 point win but were our own worst enemies in front of goal kicking 12.27 for the game. Connor Griffiths took best on ground honours. Shaun ‘spoons’ Campbell, Dyson Stevens and Boofa Hibbert all featured in among the best players. Over on the netball court the girls battled hard for 3 wins out of 6 with the A’s missing out by just 3 points, the B’s by 5 points. The C, D and E grade teams came to the rescue with wins of 9, 6 and 15 points respectively. The 19 and Unders missed out by 20 points Congratulations to Jessica Bartlett on not only her 100th A grade game for Melton Bloods, but also winning best on court in the Nadine Memorial Match. This week we look forward to the grand final re-match in the seniors. East Point had a good win in Round 1 and the match promises to be a beauty. Hopefully we can make it three from three again this weekend.

Works in Progress. Visitors to Maccy Park this season will notice many changes to the surrounds as the new clubroom project gets under way. Parking around the ground will be severely limited. We ask everybody to be patient and park on the old netball court area opposite the club rooms where a gate has been installed. We apologise for any inconvenience. Membership payments are now due. Some payments have been trickling in but there is still a way to go. Most football players have been issued with an invoice. If you have not received one or want another copy, see Clarky. Any unpaid invoices will get a gentle reminder over the coming weeks. Netballers are paying via bank transfer and many have been received and receipts will be issued as payments are received. A Player Sponsorship scheme is available and can help with your membership. Direct debit is also available. Sponsors of the week are Schnitz Woodgrove and Dawson’s Australia. As always we ask our members to support the local businesses that support us. Keep in touch with all club activities via our website www.meltonfnc. com.au or on Facebook.

2019 SEASON RECORD

EAST POINT KANGAS CORNER

Firstly, we hope everyone had a relaxing Easter break and we are all ready for round two when we take on Melton FNC at McPherson Park. Congratulations to all teams last week on round one. It was very pleasing to see the Senior football side keep their winning streak by a great win over Lake Wendouree, and to top it off the reserves and the U/19s also getting over the line. With Mickitja Rotumah-Onus, Lucas Dahlenburg, Isaac Quick, Lachie Thornton, Will McLoughlin and Sam Tipper being just a few of the boys who were named in the best, well done to all on a great first game back and our season is looking very promising.

The netballers also had some great results, with a special mention to our D grade girls who took out the top spot from last year’s reigning premiers. Tess McQueen, Georgia Mason and Delany Keating all named in the best, great effort girls! The A grade girls had an amazing win after a close game, Merryn Rogan, Beth Smith and Clare Banwell all had an outstanding first round and we look forward to watching them for the rest of the season. If you want to keep up with all things East Point Kangaroo’s, don’t forget to follow us Facebook, Instagram and Twitter! @EastPointFNC. Good Luck to all teams this week, Go Roo’s!

McDONALD’S BALLARAT FOOTBALL NETBALL LEAGUE

SUNBURY SNIPPETS

Today we welcome Melton South to Clarke Oval for our first home game. Football Highlights

The Reserves had a resounding win and the Under 19’s gave coach Corey Hansen a great start to his coaching career. However, the Seniors failed to capitalise on their good play in the first half by failing to apply scoreboard pressure to a talented Darley side which went away in the second half winning by 36 points. Netball Highlights

Great start to season with a clean sweep. The clubs’ first E grade side landed a great win of 35-10. Congratulations to 17 year old Shelby Holter who stood up to play her first A grade game filling in for the absent GS. Did a fantastic job scoring 55 from 63 attempts

2019 SEASON RECORD

MELTON SOUTH PANTHER PRESS Today we head across to Clarke Oval and take on Sunbury under lights.

MEMBERSHIP: All player membership rego’s to be paid by round 4. No pay No play.

Good luck to all Panther teams.

Also we will be carrying out a membership drive to sell memberships to family, friends ect and support our great club.

FOOTBALL: The senior boys kicked of the year with a loss. For 3 quarters the young panthers were very competitive against a strong opposition. However the last quarter the boys dropped off slightly and were over ran. Plenty of positives to come out of the game and just believe in the system that’s been put in place. Will kicked 4 and Vino 2 beauty’s. Best were Wah,Will,Watto and Houghts. The reserves lost a close game that was one that got away. Things to work on at training and a few players back will help in the future but we gotta work hard on the track. Johnny Kov kicked 2 as did the skipper Belly. Best for the day were Kov,Gemm,Drac and Patty. The unders got a massive wake up call. Totally out played by the opposition but to there credit fought it out. With 5 of there better players not playing it made it hard, however provides opportunities for other players to step up. Freddie kicked our only goal. Best were Frew,Mullen and Parsons.

SOCIAL: Next week vs Darley is past players day. If you know anyone who played/officiated at the Panthers tell them to come down and enjoy a great day. Past Player memberships still available. See Danny Martyn for more info. NOTES: Congrats to Ally & Shaun White on the arrival of little Jackson. A future father/Son for the Panthers. Enjoy the ride guys. SPONSOR OF THE WEEK: We welcome MELTON HELLOWORD TRAVEL on board this year. Thank you for your support. We ask all people involved with the Panthers to support businesses that support our club. If your looking to get away be sure to see the friendly staff, Denise & Nathan at Melton Helloworld. Thanks again. Until next week THE PROWLING PANTHER

McDONALD’S BALLARAT FOOTBALL NETBALL LEAGUE

NORTH BALLARAT CITY ROOSTER RANT Today we welcome our neighbours Lake Wendouree to our home stadium in our one and only night game for the season. Our Netball highlight of the day was the unfurling of the 2018 A Grade flag. With Bacchus Marsh marginally in front at the half way break, strategic thinking by Coach Annie and a greater second half effort by our girls allowed to spoil the Marsh party, as we comfortably won the 4 points. Congratulations to Eliza Bennett on selection for her first A Grade game. Our U19’s also won the 4 points but we unfortunately went down in all the other grades. The Senior football match was up for grabs well into the last quarter. In the first quarter our 1 goal 8 opened the door for Bacchus Marsh with our continuing inaccuracy in front of goal until the last 2 minutes of the game. With scores level at three quarter time our mid field with plenty of run and carry ensured a fourteen point victory. 5 new debutants played, lead by the big fella Cam McCallum, Brock Freeman, Josh Chatfield and young guns Riley Polkinghorne and Fletcher Toose. After the Bacchus Marsh game a successful player’s auction took place with plenty of spiritual bidding and Bacchus

bfnl.com.au

Marsh naming Gina McCartin and Tim Speirs players of the day. Congratulations to the successful purchasers of these players. Congratulations to Alana Bodey on playing her 100th game in the U17’s. Alana began playing netball in the U12’s & has developed into a very reliable and dependable netballer. Well done Alana. We also welcome all our Sponsors to the club and in particular North Ballarat Sports Club, Ballarat Bingo Centre, Remingtons Insurance Brokers, Telstra Stores, Renault Ballarat, BLK, RACV Resort Creswick, Golf House Hotel, North Ballarat Bakery, TAC and we are a supporter of the Premiers Active April program. – A program to help demonstrate the amount of community sporting utilisation within the precinct. After the game please join us in the VIP room for some refreshments and a chat on the day’s activities.

Go Northies!

2019 SEASON RECORD

LAKE WENDOUREE LAKERS NOTES We hope you all enjoyed your break & now we can hit the rest of the season running as we venture to Eureka Stadium for our night match against North City.

The Club is on the push for Player Sponsors for 2019 so if your looking to get behind the Club contact Vin Armstrong who can put you in touch with one of our footballers or netballers

Well round 1 was not the start of the season we had hoped for but that is now water under the bridge & we had the Easter break to get over it.

for the 2019 Season.

With our 3 football teams going down we had better luck on the netball court with our Under 19’s, C & B grades taking out the 4 points in what where tough fought out games in all levels. Our A grade girls did their best to bring home the 4 points to help Kara Hart celebrate her 300th Senior Club Game but went down by only 2 goals in the end. It was great to see so many back in the Club rooms welcoming our “First Year Players” after round 1 and showing them the Lakers Spirit. Thanks to our social committee for putting on another good night! Make sure you keep May 11th free four our next social event as we head out to Mandy & Terry Simpsons for our Wild, Wild West Night – Its wonderful that Mandy & Terry are having us & we are sure it will be “One of those nights to remember”!

The ladies have started our Thursday Night teas with a bang – remember supporters & family are always welcome up at the rooms on a Thursday night for a catch up & bite to eat while hearing the team selections – hope to see a few new faces come along. Next week will be our first home game against Sebastopol & we will be welcoming our past players for a drink & we will also be having morning tea for our Under 19 football & netball parents as we welcome them to the senior club! Lastly, if anyone sees our Reserves coach hitchhiking home from Lakers on a Thursday night – just give him a lift home – we think the stress of team selection is getting to him & he has obviously forgotten that he actually drove his car to Lakers !!

Go Lakers!!!

2019 SEASON RECORD

NETBALL REPORT Netball Manager - Kim Bailey

Round one has kicked off and we saw some fantastic games of netball over the weekend, setting the standard for what should be a cracker of a 2019 season. Under somewhat threatening skies, all games were played in the dry which was conducive to some spectacular netball. Sunbury made it a clean sweep across all its grade with a 21-goal win over Darley. Shelby Holter made her A grade debut for the Lions at goal shooter, after playing 19s, and didn’t disappoint shooting 54 from 61 attempts at 89%. Down the other end of the court another young gun, Darley’s Melanie Freeman had an outstanding game, shooting most of the Devils goals. Melton South snuck home by three goals over cross town rivals Melton. A disappointing start for new Melton coach Melissa Climas who would have wanted to get the win under her belt against her old club. Melton South defender Grace Valele showed why she is a future star of our competition with a tenacious game in defence. North Ballarat City proved why they start as premiership favourites with a comprehensive win over Bacchus Marsh at Mars Oval. Jordyn Bibby’s return to the shooting circle, combined with Maddie Selmon and dominated the game, propelling North to the win. New Bacchus Marsh recruit Annie Hills had a terrific debut for the Cobras, sharing the shooting duties with Marie Bolitho. Our first night match of the year saw Ballarat too strong for Sebastopol. A good start from the Swans saw them take a seven-goal lead into the first break, but the Burra toiled away to reduce the margin to five at the final break, but a 15 to nine goal last quarter saw Ballarat burst away to claim a 15-goal victory East Point took on Lake Wendouree in a heart stopper. East skipped away an early lead and was able to maintain that quite comfortably going into the last. But Lakers had other ideas and rallied in the last to just fall short of the win, going down by two. It was a disappointing way for Lake Wendouree’s Kara Hart to finish her day, after celebrating her 300game milestone. Kara is in her 16th season with Lake

Wendouree, which is an amazing effort, considering there is quite a revolving door in netball teams these days. She has been lucky enough to play in four premierships with Lakers between 2007 and 2010 before winning a fourth premiership in 2012. Kara also coaches at the club and is continually giving back to the younger players and her leadership and tutorage that she gives to these girls in invaluable. Kara has been a long-time interleague representative for the BFNL and played in our successful RVNL teams, that went through undefeated for four years. Congratulations Kara, we hoped you enjoyed your special day and hoping we see you in the BFNL netball and female football competitions for many more years. This week, we are pleased to announce the appointment of our open netball interleague team coach for 2019. Bacchus Marsh’s Michael Saker will coach the team at the Worksafe Community Championship weekend on Saturday, 18th May, at Mars Stadium against the Hampton Football Netball League, a league that has a very strong netball competitions and should prove to be a great game. Michael, in his third year at the Cobras has had some terrific results, cumulating in being named coach of the year in 2018. Michael has an extensive coaching and playing netball background. He’s been involved in netball for 18 years, playing at both state and international levels. He’s coached in the indoor state league competition and been involved in six national titles. So, our BFNL is very much in safe hands and looking for a great result. Michael will start to formulate a team across the next few weeks and no doubt will assemble a great team. This year we have a Good Friday game with Ballarat taking on Redan at Alfredton Oval. Redan open their season with a new look team and will be a terrific game. Then we break for Easter before we resume round two with a feast of netball ahead. Hope everyone has a safe and happy Easter. Good luck to all teams.

Happy Netballing. bfnl.com.au
