McDonald’s Ballarat FNL Operations Manager Shane Anwyl
We get back on track this week after the split round across Easter the last two weeks with a highlight being the unveiling of lights at Maddingley Oval in Bacchus Marsh for the first night match. The Cobras will take on Melton in what will be a great spectacle and we congratulate all who have got this project to completion. Interleague is in full swing at the moment with squads training and the selection processes commencing. Juniors will kick off with the AFL Goldfields Trophy to be held at Arnolds Creek, Melton for junior football and netball on Saturday 11th May. The finals teams will be announced at the final training on Wednesday 8th May and posted to the league website and social media.
Senior interleague will be as exciting as 2018 as the BFNL take on the Hampden DFNL at Mars Stadium on Saturday 18th May. The Hampden league of course being led by AFL great Jonathon Brown, who will present a formidable opposition against the best Chris Stuhldreier has put together for the league. A further exciting announcement is that the curtain raiser to the senior game will be a challenge match where the best U19’s from across the league will compete in an East -v- West Allstar U19 concept. The West team (based around Ballarat) will be coached by Chris Banwell with the East team to be coached by Troy Scoble. More to come on this exciting game. Good luck to all teams across the weekend.

Hello and welcome to round three of the McDonald’s Ballarat FNL. There have been some great displays of football and netball in the first 2 rounds already, the 1 point thriller under lights at Mars Stadium certainly being one of them.

AT THE BAR with ‘The insider’
and Lachlan George (Redan) I sat down with prized Redan recruit Lachlan George for a 15 minute chat that lasted 45. “Lachie” is an interesting character, likeable and has a simple philosophy on footy - to take pride in your performance. George booted four goals in his first game for the Lions in their round two win over Ballarat on Good Friday. I’m tipping his experience will have a lasting effect for the better, on Redan in season 2019.
George: Yes, I was in the system for about 12 years and played under some really good coaches - I really enjoyed my time in the VFL - I will miss it (Played under Darren Creswell, Brendan Bolton, Marc Greig, Gerald Fitzgerald to name a few)
Name: Lachlan George (Redan)
George: I’d like to think I was pretty consistent most years but if I was to pin point, I would say that it was my time at Box Hill and training with Hawthorn in match simulated pre season sessions. I was able to improve significantly especially with my midfield development. Hawthorn were the best with their midfield teaching etc. at the time.
Age: 31 - Height 182cm, Weight 88kg Occupation: Transport (Agriculture) and farmer. Former clubs: Ballarat Rebels, Tassie Devils, Box Hill, North Ballarat Roosters, Williamstown. Games: 183 (VFL Life Member) - Goals: 126 Achievements: VFL representative and VFL Team of the Year 2013 Insider: I’m told your a fairly straight shooter with your attitude towards life and footy, is that a fair assessment? George: Yeah that’s a fair call, I don’t like to muck around - I tend to call a spade a spade Insider: You’ve recently retired from footy with Williamstown (VFL), why come to Redan? George: Well it was my work (travel) commitments above all else that prompted the ‘Willi’ exit, my body is still in good enough knick to play but I guess having the opportunity to run around with one of my best mates Orren Stephenson got me over the line in the end. Insider: Given those work commitments, will you miss much footy with Redan this year? George: A week here and there will be unavoidable but i’ll be available to play most weeks. Insider: You were a half forward/mid in the VFL, what position do you see the best fit for you at Redan? George: Probably mid/forward, pretty much the same. Insider: You must be proud of your Life Membership with the VFL (175 games criteria)?
Insider: You made the 2013 VFL team of the year, who or what was the greatest influence on you in that particular year that led to you being recognised?
Insider: What expectations do you have on Redan this year? On Good Friday you guys were terrific.... George: If we can continue to improve, back up on our good performances, respond off our poor ones and maintain a consistency with our effort - that will achieve expectation. Insider: There’s a few listed and ex ‘Willi’ players getting around - I’m sure rival clubs will benefit from their selection if and when available? George: Yeah there’s a few, Lachie Bramble (Sunbury) and Billy Myers (Darley) are good players. Insider: Any plans for Interleague this year? George: I’ve just turned 31, and I’ve played a fair bit of footy over the journey. I’m happy to play if selected but I hope it’s not at the expense of a young bloke going places. I just want to play with the best players in the comp if I’m playing - isn’t that what it’s all about? Insider: At Redan, do you have an influence with the line coaching for example given your experience? George: No. The boys are well coached and he’s (Jarrett Giampaolo) an excellent communicator. I can give advice to help the young ones along if they ask but as for coaching I don’t have the time - if you’re going to put your hand up you to coach you have to put in the time - it’s not fair or right any other way.

RD 3 FOOTBALL PREVIEW with ‘Scoop’
Reigning premiers East Point have confirmed their early flag favorites tag with a 40 point win on the road in last Saturday’s Grand Final Replay against Melton. At round twos end we’re left with just four unbeaten sides, an evenness i’m sure the BFNL will be happy with. The East Point result poses a stern warning to a winless Ballarat ahead of their round three night clash at Alfredton Oval. The Kangaroos avenues to goal are over and above the competition average with 14 different goalkickers in the opening two rounds. The young Swans were disappointing on Good Friday and copped a 77 point thrashing at the hands of their nemesis Redan. The Lions have beaten the Swans in eight of their last nine encounters by an average of 59 points. It won’t get any easier against East I assure you. Swans coach Joe Carmody will be hoping his young troops can be as competitive as they were in round one. Nonetheless, the ‘Kangas’ are the most physical side in the competition and will be too good. The evening dew looks the only saviour for the Swans not to be blown away - East Point by 60 points. The Redan v Sunbury clash looms as the match of the round, a battle between two Lions of the football variety you could say. Both sides head into round three on the back of wins in round two - but it was Redan for mine that looked the most impressive. After a disastrous start to 2018 (0-9), Redan have kickstarted their season off the bye with a big win. Sunbury on the hand have been patchy, team balance on the height front (too tall) will take time to work itself out and their form in recent times on the road has been horrible (0-8). I’m aware it’s a new season and stats within a new look group can stand for little but it’s just the reason i’m leaning to Redan to get the points with new Sunbury coach Travis Hodgson set to be on the wrong end of another close one - Redan by 8 points. Lake Wendouree (1-1) host Sebastopol (1-0) in another intriguing match up. The Lakers recovered from a rare lapse in defence against the leagues best (conceded 24 goals v East) to upset North Ballarat City(conceded 7 goals) by a solitary point while the jury will remain out on the ‘Burras return
from a 21 day break (missed bye Rd2 and Easter split round). The encouraging thing for Sebastopol is that there four gun recruits all found their way into the best in their opening round win over Ballarat and still have Tony Lockyer to come back into the side. I’m not a fan of the bye unless you’re hobbling or getting beat -let alone 21 days off - momentum is everything in football. There’s some hype around Sebastopol in 2019, but i’m tipping Lake Wendouree at home in a dour struggle by six points. Darley (2-0) will travel in round three for the first time this year to meet Melton South (0-2). The Devils will be hoping to put away the competitive Panthers early at Melton Recreation Reserve and deny this young group a sniff. With honorourable losses to Melton and Sunbury in their opening two rounds, Panthers coach Heath Pritchard will be looking for another consistent effort once again. South’s new recruit Paul Bower had an immediate impact in first game for the club last week but i’m tipping they would need a another few of his kind to upset the Devils. Darley welcomes back Brian Graham to join his brother Nick which would be well worth just paying the entry fee to see. Darley coach Heath Scotland will be looking to consolidate with a four quarter performance to go 3-0 before a round four meeting with Melton. Darley to win - 48 points. Melton will be on the rebound when they meet Bacchus Marsh under the new lights at Maddingley Park. The Bloods have been wasteful in front of goal this year for a return of 18 goals, 37 behinds. In fact, Melton have scored more behinds than goals in 10 of their last 14 games at an average of 10 goals -15 behinds per game. While the margin was telling in the end of last weeks Grand Final replay against East, the Bloods missed at least five gettable chances. On the other hand East (13.8) were much more effective. The Cobras will want to carry their spirited effort against Darley in the second half of last week into the Bloods game under lights. Both sides are struggling with niggly injuries, it will be interesting to see who comes up. The Bloods bat way too deep for the Cobras to cause an upset here - Melton to win by 36 points. Enjoy your footy!

ROUND 3 NETBALL PREVIEW by Grace Bibby
Round three of the McDonald Ballarat Football Netball League will see some big games take place. North Ballarat City will sit pretty with a thirdround bye as they remain one of four teams still undefeated after two outings.
SUNBURY V REDAN
Sunbury look set to continue their run of success as they take on Redan.
While only having one game under their belt Redan look like they may have dropped off the pace this season with a young, developing group. Many thought Sunbury would be in a similar predicament however they have come out all guns blazing and are two from two the start their season. Sunbury are relying on their season campaigners led by Ruth Smith where Redan have a new look line up. A lack of continuity let Redan down on Good Friday as their new goaling combination struggled to convert. There will be no pressure release as Sunbury defenders press across the court. Prediction: Sunbury to secure their third win of the season.
LAKE WENDOUREE V SEBASTOPOL
Lake Wendouree will be looking for their first win of the season when they take on Sebastopol. Lake Wendouree were gallant in defeat last weekend against North Ballarat City but were unable to come away with the four points. They had plenty of winners all over the court, but lapses proved costly. Mel Allen showed how important she is to the line up holding down the offensive end while Kate Drew impressed in defence. Sebastopol will have enjoyed the rest last weekend to evaluate its list after losing Prue Scott in round one to a serios knee injury. Prediction: Lake Wendouree to win comfortably.
BACCHUS MARSH V MELTON
Bacchus Marsh will be favourites as they take on Melton. After a close first round loss to NBC Bacchus Marsh had no issues against Darley.
EAST POINT V BALLARAT
It will be a similar result this weekend if previous results are anything to go by.
East Point easily accounted for Melton on the back on a tough win over Lakers the week earlier.
Annie Hills now has two games under her belt and will be looking to increase her output and percentage this weekend.
East Point are still the favoured team on paper, but an improving Swans line up with have a nothing to lose attitude.
DARLEY V MELTON SOUTH
East Point and Ballarat will be fighting to keep their perfect season in tact as they meet at Alfredton.
Lydia Jordan will be a player the East team have not seen much of and if you allow her to get the ball inside the circle, she will make you pay. The young Talbot goaler has made a seamless transition into the BFNL and is a high-quality player. Jordan is one of several young guns that Swans have lured to the club in the off season. Swans were able to sustain a high level of play against Sebastopol and again against Redan but they will have to take another step up to match East Point who once again loom as one of many premiership contenders. Prediction: East Point to win, Ballarat to be competitive but not there yet.
Prediction: Bacchus Marsh to defeat Melton.
As is the case with Lake Wendouree Darley will be looking for their first win when they take on Melton South. Darley have a strong group of young players making their way into the senior ranks with the likes of Mel Freeman, Kaylee Smith and Ellie Martin all making waves. While they haven’t tastes success yet this season a win will not be too far away and against Melton South they will give themselves every chance. Prediction: Darley to win in a close one.

2019 SEASON RECORD
NORTH BALLARAT CITY ROOSTER RANT Well done to all on ANZAC eve with our Netballers, Footballers and supporters participating in an ANZAC talk and tribute to the brave young men and women who served our great country over many years. As disappointing as the outcome was for our Senior team last week a huge crowd attended our one and only night game for the year. The day started well with a good win to our Under 19’s then Lake Wendouree winning both the Reserves and Seniors. A major highlight of the night being Ryan Luke’s 200th game. Smith! as is known to all, originally started in our Juniors and was a member of our Senior team way back playing in the Bendigo League. A true loyal Northie his work ethic and leadership on and off the field is second to none. We congratulate you SMITH on your 200th game.
In netball our A grade and Under 19’s were the only successful teams on the day with E grade showing great promise going down by 4. The Night Sky was lit up with an electrifying scoreboard flashing sponsors across the screen together with flashes of players and goals kicked. A huge thank you to JJ for getting this program up and running in such a professional manner. Any new sponsors wanting to jump on board are more than welcome. With the bye for North this week we should all come back refreshed and ready for the road trip to Sunbury. The club in its support for TAC Towards Zero has a bus booked for footballers, netballers and supporters.
Go North!

MELTON BLOODS BANTER Round 2 Results
The under 19s led the way with a handy win but from there the Ressies and Seniors could not match the opposition. It was the first time in over 10 years that our Unders have beaten East Point. In an entertaining game of footy the boys did a great job to fight for the win in what was a close final quarter. Jack O’Rourke was the Schnitz best on ground, Josh Cooper also had an excellent game. In the reserves, Kurt Baker was our best while at senior level Dyson Stevens led the way for the Bloods. Congratulations to Ben Archard, Shaun Campbell, Lachlan Walker, Billy Crofts, Ryan Carter, Liam Carter, Jaycob Hickey and Braedan Kight on their selection in the initial BFL Senior Interleague squad. The match is scheduled for Saturday May 18th at Mars Stadium against the Hampden Football League. We would also like to acknowledge our leadership groups for this year and in particular our captains - Ben Archard and Braedan Kight remain co-captains at senior level, Jake Buttigieg for the reserves and Hudson Wilde takes on the Under 19s captaincy. Well done boys and to all players in our leadership groups this year. Our players have been asked to find a player sponsor for 2019. You can find details of how to sign up as a player sponsor on our website, or speak to one of the players - they would appreciate your support. Out on the Netball Courts, things were similar with the 19 and Under girls claiming honours for the day. Our Open Age Women’s footballers also suffered a loss in their first ever game for the Bloods last Sunday. By all accounts they battled
hard against an experienced opposition. It has been a lot of work getting the team together so well done to Beau and his team. A number of queries about going up have come in over the last week so interest in this new aspect of our operations is on the up. This week it is up the road to Cobra land for a match under lights for the Seniors. Hopefully the weather will hold for us. We don’t want to see a repeat of the last few night games.
Social Notes
The first big draw for 2019 is on again, after the Darley Game in Round 4. See Rayza or Leanne for Tickets. See the notices in the usual places for details. The Sponsors luncheon is also coming up on May 11th. All Meltonians are welcome and invitiations have been sent to all sponsors. Our Guest Speaker for the day is Charlie Bezzina, a retired Police Officer formerly of the Homicide Squad. It should be fascinating afternoon.
Memberships. Thanks to all who have paid up so far, it is very encouraging but please anyone who is in arrears please fix your dues up now. Sponsors of the week are Melton Garden Supplies and
Melton Toyota. As always, we ask our members to support the local businesses that support us. Keep in touch with all club activities via our website www.meltonfnc. com.au or on Facebook.

McDONALD’S BALLARAT FOOTBALL NETBALL LEAGUE
LAKE WENDOUREE LAKERS NOTES Welcome everyone to Ballarat Isuzu Oval for round 3 of the 2019 Season and our first home game. Its always a great day when we host Sebastopol FNC & we especially welcome them all here today. For those new parents to the Senior Club make sure you pop into members bar at half time of under 19 football for a welcoming cuppa & catch up & chance to meet other parents you may not have met yet. We also welcome those past players today who are able to join us for a drink, chat & catch up - enjoy the game! Our outing for round 2 proved more prosperous than our previous round and it was great to see such improvement across all levels of the football & netball last week. We performed well on the netball court taking home the points in 4 out of the 6 games, with strong wins to the B, C, D & E grade girls. The 19’s went in against a strong North outfit & held their own for the first half but North forced errors in the 2nd half to build a commanding lead. The A grade was a high intensity match right from the first whistle. With many lead changes throughout the 4 quarters they eventually went down by only 3 goals in the end. Even though our under 19 boys went down on the day the coach was pleased with the boys who put in a much better effort across
42
bfnl.com.au
the board with promising signs ahead - better players on the day went to Darcy Cullenward, Sam Canny & Will Tickner. We witnessed a very good standard of footy in the Reserves with our young gun recruit Michael Page booting 5 goals! Great to have you back Pagey! Other impressive performances by Oliver Yeung & Sean Wilmott. Along with our senior netball our senior footballers had us on the edge of our seats for most of the night with a very tight, close fought out game! The turn around in performance between round one & Saturday night was impressive & a credit to the playing group to get the job done! There was a lot of great footy played but new recruit Josh Bibby shone through along with Ash Simpson & Caleb Hepworth! Don’t forget our next social function at Mandy & Terry’s - our Wild Wild West Night - sure to be a hoot !! Hope you can all stick around for a drink tonight & those who have paid their memberships don’t forget the members $100 draw at 6pm!! Got to be there to win it !! All the best on the court & oval today - we are sure to witness some great competition once again
Go Lakers!!!
2019 SEASON RECORD
SEBASTOPOL FOOTBALL Welcome back to season 2019. With a couple of weeks off between our first and second game of the year we’re in for a big weekend on and off field and should be raring to go!! The ressies got round 1 off to a slow start and were beaten by 31 points. Big Hammer Everett was head and shoulders above everyone on the ground, with Mar Cain and Tommy P also in the bests. This weekend we have ALEX WALLIS playing his 50th game (this is being written on Monday, so hopefully he doesn’t get injured like the previous 2 times he’s supposed to play his 50th). The Dragon
is a fantastic footballer, teammate, dancer and human being. Go well today champion. The seniors were well served by recruits Hugo Papst, Luke Kiel, Pig Thoolen and Jenks who got the team over the line by 21 points. The swannies challenged in the 3rd qtr but the boys flexed their muscle and got the job done. BURRA BALL tonight 7pm at the Golf House Hotel. Be there or be somewhere else that’s nowhere near as fun (unless you’re at Groovin) Good luck to all football and netball teams this week against the Lake Wendouree Lakers!!
UP THE BURRA!!

McDONALD’S BALLARAT FOOTBALL NETBALL LEAGUE
MELTON SOUTH PANTHER PRESS Today we would like to welcome back all past players and officials from the past, both netball and football. We hope you enjoy your day and reminisce with all your mates. No doubt the goals are getting longer and marks are getting higher. Enjoy your day and hope to see you again soon. After today’s games the super rules will don the boots and have a kick. Hang around and support the old fella’s. FOOTBALL The senior boys put up a valiant effort on the night. No doubt it’s one that got away. The young panthers are showing a lot of promise and with a bit of luck and a less few lapses a win is just around the corner. Yes there are no points on the board however there are signs of a much better structure and game plan which should please all supporters. Goal kickers on the night, Will kicked 3 and Vino 2 with a few single goal kickers. Best on the day were Bower,Chapman,Collins and Will. Great to see a few young blokes stepping up. Well done to Jack who backed up in the ones due to a warm up injury. The reserves got a football lesson in the first half. The boys tried and lifted there effort in the 2nd but were outclassed. Unfortunately a few boys pulled out before the game and hope to get them back this week. Woody and Spud kicked a goal each. Best were Jack Morrisey,Belly,Patty and Deano.
46
bfnl.com.au
The unders were also beaten by a better side. With a few injuries on the day the boys never gave up and had a crack. Get to training boys and work on a few team structures. Rogers kicked all 3 goals. Best were Rohan Mullen, Jayden O’laughlin, Lister-hill and Mitch Fino. MEMBERSHIP All playing memberships are due before next round. Make sure you are all payed up or it’s “No pay No play”. If you need, see a committee member to organize options. PAST PLAYER/OFFICIALS MEMBERSHIPS are still available. $80 with drink card. THE PROWLING PANTHER
2019 SEASON RECORD
DARLEY DIARY Today we come up against Melton South on their home turf, which is never easy. Good luck to all football and netball sides. Congratulations to all 3 football sides on magnificent wins last weekend against our local rivals. The Under 19’s had a huge win and we are so very proud of you boys sticking together and playing great footy. We hope you boys can reap the rewards over the season and learn as much as you can under Grant Wright. Our Ressies also had a massive turnaround from Round 1. We have had more players commit and numbers now seem to be better, with plenty of depth. Great to see. Congrats to Our Under 19’s netball side - it is also starting to come together for you very talented girls and it was a very comfortable win. No luck for our other remaining netball sides, but they are definitely improving and will soon gel for a win I am sure. Our Women Footballers commenced their season last weekend against the Cobra’s and there was much improvement on field. Unfortunately inaccurate kicking for goal had us defeated, but a win is on the cards for you girls very soon!

McDONALD’S BALLARAT FOOTBALL NETBALL LEAGUE
REDAN THE LIONS DEN Good Friday saw us finally get our season underway, as we travelled to Alfredton Oval to take on Ballarat. On the football field the U19 boys started the day with a good win. Jack Richards, Cooper Atchison & Kane Councillor all featuring in the best with Kane booting 5 goals for the day. As always the U19’s is transitional side & more that half the team are either new to the club or making the step up from last years U17 side. The boys have settled well together during the pre-season & with a few players away on the Easter break, we are in for an exciting season from our young lions. Good luck to Steve Kane as coach & Ash Davidson as his assistant for the season. Ballarat’s Reserves jumped out of the blocks & set our boys a difficult task to make up the difference. Numbers are good throughout the squad & there has been some hard work put in on the track this week so we can bounce back against Sunbury at home. Congratulation to Jeromy Johnston on his re appointment as coach. The Senior team hit the park & put in a strong first half performance to set up a 37 pt lead at the long break, with no let-up in the second half we ran away with a 77-point win. Congratulations to first game players Daniel Bond & Lachie George both featuring in the best for the day, congratulations also to Liam O’Brien on his first game for the club & making the step

up from the U19’s to the senior ranks. Lachlan McLean had a great day on the park racking up 6 goals with Grant Bell hot on his heals with 5, in all we had 9 players contributed to the goal tally for the day. Congratulation to Jarret Giampaolo on his first win as senior coach, something we will be looking forward to celebrating more often throughout the season. A tough day on the court for our Netball girls, although they were unable to put a win on the board for the day. Lots of new players & some familiar old faces making up the squads has seen the girls put in a solid pre-season. Congratulations to all our new coaches for the season & to Hayley Munro as A Grade head coach. The girls will have worked hard this week in their preparation to take on Sunbury at home today. Social News Annual Ball Saturday May 25th ANA Hall 7 pm Tickets available via tickethost.com.au Today we welcome Sunbury to the City Oval for clash of Lions
