and Sebastopol. This game will commence at 11am and is sure to be a fantastic display. The netball will kick off on the Mars netball courts at 1.30pm This weekend will see the first junior interleague campaign against the Riddell DFNL at Melton for all junior age groups in football and netball. On a final note, for tomorrow, the league wishes all mothers a very Happy Mother day and hops you are rightly spoiled for the day. Thank you from every football and netball player for all that you have done. Good luck to teams this weekend.

2019 SEASON RECORD

WORKSAFE AFL VICTORIA COUNTRY 2019 AFL VICTORIA BEYOND BLUE ROUND Victorian footballers will highlight the importance of mental health this week when they take part in a state-wide AFL Victoria Beyond Blue Round on May 11 and 12. Victorian footballers across the state will wear blue tape around their wrists to educate the football community on mental health and wellbeing, and the support available. The dedicated Round is the second event AFL Victoria will run as part of their partnership with Beyond Blue. In previous years, AFL Victoria consulted with their clubs and found that mental health was one of the leading priorities for both players and supporters. Wearing blue tape is a symbolic action telling everyone that speaking up and seeking support for mental health is OK, the same way we talk about and seek support for physical injuries.

“AFL Victoria is proud to partner with Beyond Blue again this year to celebrate Beyond Blue Round for the second time with the aim of starting conversations, increasing awareness, reducing stigma and educating the football community on mental health and the support that is available. “With mental health being a leading priority for both players and supporters, it is important that we do all that we can to ensure we are addressing the needs of the football community, as well as using our great game as a vehicle to increase the awareness of mental health to the broader community,” Mr. Bell said. The Beyond Blue Support Service is available by phone 24/7 on 1300 22 4636, online chat from 3pm to 12am AEST or email. For more information, visit beyondblue.org.au

Clubs are encouraged to get involved by registering to support the 2019 AFL Victoria Beyond Blue Round, having players wear the Beyond Blue tape around their right wrist during their game on the weekend, and organising a fundraising and awareness raising event within their club. Head of AFL Victoria Ricky Bell said he is looking forward to seeing the Victorian football community show their support for a great cause this weekend. bfnl.com.au

AT THE BAR with ‘The insider’

and Andrew Hooper (Ballarat) Name: Andrew Hooper

Current club/role: Ballarat - Playing Assistant Coach Age: 28 Height: 173cm Weight: 83kg

Former clubs: Western Bulldogs, Williamstown, Glenelg, Northern Roosters, Werribee Achievements: Leading Goalkicker Werribee 2018 + Glenelg 2013, VFL Team of the Year 2015 AFL Career games: 7 (Western Bulldogs drafted 2010) VFL Career games: 67 in best 17/67 - VFL Career goals: 114 (multiple goals on 19 occasions) Occupation: Student, studying to be a Primary School Teacher Hobbies outside of footy: Golf, Fishing, Gettting to the beach Insider: Well Andrew, seven goals last week with a calf complaint against the reigning premiers is a fair return? Andrew: Yes mate, it was nice to hit the scoreboard personally but unfortunately we couldn’t get the win. Insider: Has that put Interleague on the agenda? Andrew: No, i’m not 100% so i’ve made myself unavailable. I just want to get my body right and that week off will be a huge help with my recovery. Insider: You’ve enjoyed success at higher levels throughout your career, what made you settle on Ballarat - i’m sure there were a few clubs knocking on your door when you left Werribee? Andrew: There was a few, not just Ballarat Football League clubs. My reason for leaving Werribee in the first place was because of travel. I live in Ballarat and the trip up and back four times a week became a bit much. I was an affiliated player with Ballarat

while I was at Werribee and now i’m more than happy to return the faith and play some footy here. Insider: What do you hope to bring to the club (Ballarat)? Andrew: I’ve about 10 years experience at a higher level than I can help ‘give back’ and pass on to the club as a whole. It’s not just about the players, im huge on culture and building relationships throughout the club right down to the juniors. Insider: You were drafted in 2010. Someone or some club must have shown some serious faith in you along the way? Andrew: No one more so than my parents. They kept giving me the confidence to have a crack no matter what. Gerald Fitzgerald was also a big influence during my time at the Roosters - I rate him highly. Insider: At 173cm, you don’t suit the profile of the modern day draftee, you must have some strengths that compensate for your lack of height? Andrew: Speed, i’ve never lost my pace - also my agility and overhead marking ability I would consider my strengths....and I just love to compete. Insider: What expectations do you have for Ballarat in 2019? Andrew: To be competitive first and foremost. To see our structures in place work because it helps the groups belief in the message. Also, we need to close the gap between our best and worst footy. We’ve been in games in patches and done some good things. The boys are getting close, we just need to do it for longer. Insider: Well it just may happen against Bacchus Marsh on Saturday..... Andrew: I hope so

2019 SEASON RECORD

RD 4 FOOTBALL PREVIEW with ‘Scoop’

Bacchus Marsh (0-3) will host Ballarat (0-3) in a must win battle between ninth and tenth with both clubs rating themselves a real chance of securing the points despite their winless records. The Cobras have struggled with injury and availability off the field and fluency on it. They’ve make hard work of a simple game with costly turnovers and as a result, have won just 2/12 quarters for the season. Admittedly their opposition have been tougher assignments than most - North Ballarat City, Darley, and Melton. The Cobras have looked good in patches, similar to the Swans who last week won two quarters against the reigning premiers East Point despite going down by 50. Andrew Hooper was the star in a losing side with seven goals. The former Werribee and Western Bulldog utility’s influence will go a long way to determining the result. The Swans average 78 points (for) per game - if they can manage that at Maddingley Park it should be enough to get them over the line Ballarat to win by 8 points. Sebastopol (1-1) will be better for the run despite losing to Lake Wendouree last week - the ‘Burras were surely disadvantaged by their 21 day break (Lockyer, Thoolin, Austin, Keeble all missed). Unfortunately for the ‘Burras, round four is locked in for a meeting with a ruthless East Point (3-0). The reigning premiers have the most dangerous set up forward in the comp with Brad Wittaker (16) and Jordan Johnston (12) leading the league’s goalkicking. The two have combined for more goals than North Ballarat City (16), Sebastopol (19), Lake Wendouree (25), Melton South (21), and are just one shy of Melton (29)! East Point do give you a chance despite their dominance, having lost 4.5/12 quarters this season - but it’s their weapons forward that continue to outweigh any oppositions’ at the moment - East Point to win by 36 points. Melton (2-1) meet Darley (3-0) at MacPherson Park in the match of the round. The Bloods overcame a scrappy first half under the lights against Bacchus Marsh last week to finish well enough to give the Devils something to think about. Connor Griffiths, Ryan Davis and Jack Walker ran riot after half time to put the game beyond doubt but the Devils loom a much harder test. The Graham brothers and Billie Myers are a class above and will keep the likes of Dyson Stevens, Shaun Campbell and the aforementioned honest. The Bloods are likely

to miss Ben Archard (hamstring) and Matt Denham (hamstring) again who were instrumental in their win over the Devils at their last meet in 2018. Conversion in front of goal for the Bloods (29.52) this year is a concern and has to be wearing thin with coach Aaron Tymms. On the other hand the Devils are building nicely, with near on all players finding some good touch last week ahead of the big clash. Darley are travelling a little better for mine, four weeks in - the Devils to win by 18 points. In form Redan (2-0) take on Lake Wendouree (2-1) in another interesting match up. The Lions have taken all before them in their opening two rounds led by ex VFL gun Lachie George and his good mate Orron Stephenson who is injury free and firing in the ruck. The Lakers have corrected their first round disaster against the reigning premiers East Point to hold off North Ballarat City and Sebastopol in their last two. Redan’s ability to hit the scoreboard has been the clubs obvious strength in their opening two games averaging near 140 points per game. Grant Bell with eight goals), George (seven) and Lachlan McLean (six) have been the major contributors on the back of clean centre clearance from Stephenson’s ruck work. Redan’s vulnerability lies at the back while questions will be asked of the Lakers strength (defence)to hold up again. I think the Lakers can get the job done given the likely absence of Redan’s George (work) - Lakers to win by 8 points. It’s a must win game game for Sunbury (1-2) on Saturday when they meet North Ballarat City (1-1) at the Clarke Oval. A Lions loss would see them go 1-3 with meetings against Bacchus Marsh (a), Melton (h), Lakers (a) and East Point (a) to follow. North Ballarat City return off the bye and will be hoping to start well and get themselves into a position for a prized win away from Ballarat. Both sides match up well with key talls and dangerous midfields. The result of this game could well be decided from the coaches box given the like for like nature of the two teams. City’s goal conversion (16.33@32.6% worst in the comp) will need to improve while the balance of the Sunbury line-up remains a work in progress. Saturday’s result will provide us with the true reflection. I’m tipping the Lions at home - it’s a game they simply can’t afford to lose - Sunbury to win by 12 points.

2019 SEASON RECORD

ROUND 4 NETBALL PREVIEW by Grace Bibby

Round three saw one of the biggest upsets in the Ballarat FNL in recent times and we our fingers crossed for more exciting results this weekend.

MELTON V DARLEY

Last weekend Melton Bloods recorded their first victory in some time over one of the stronger teams in the league in Bacchus Marsh. They will be tested again this weekend when they meet Darley Devils who also recorded their first victory of the season last weekend. Both clubs have showed promising signs in the early rounds and a second win for either side in round four will see them climb up the ladder. Paige Gilcrist and Alexis Climas are proving to be quite the goalie partnership and will be a tough match up for young Darley defenders Tahni Lopes, Ellie Martin and Kaylee Smith. The Darley attacking end will need to shoot at a higher percentage if they are to record another win. They have been getting a lot of opportunity but not always capitalizing. Prediction: Melton to win in a close one.

EAST POINT V SEBASTOPOL

Sebastopol will be still chasing their first victory of the season when they meet East Point at the Eastern Oval. East Point overcome a gallant Ballarat last weekend and will take their good form into the contest. Sebastopol have had a less than ideal start with injuries and a lack of numbers. They will be hopeful of turning their season around, but a win does not look likely against East Point. Prediction: East Point to win convincingly.

REDAN V LAKE WENDOUREE

After a big win over Sebastopol Lake Wendouree will go into their match against Redan as favourites. Last week it was the Lakers young brigade that got the job done. Elonie Hooper showed her versatility our at wing attack while Greta Pearson dominated in wing defence and Ella Bibby held her own in the attacking circle. Lakers are in a good position giving they have had a tough start to the season.

They will look to get a couple of big wins on the board in the coming weeks and against Redan will be their second big win in as many weeks. As for Redan their goalies are doing their best under the circumstances but they are staved of opportunity. In their loss to Sunbury in the weekend just gone they had a third as many attempts at goal. Prediction: Hard to see Redan defeating Lake Wendouree in round four.

SUNBURY V NORTH BALLARAT

Sunbury versus North Ballarat will be the match of the round on the netball courts. Both teams are still undefeated on top of the ladder and both teams will be there abouts when finals come around. North Ballarat City have added to their list in the off season and the likes of Poppy Douglass, Remi Hooper and Maddy Selmon have all progressed well in the off season. Laura McDonald was a stand out in patches in their round two win over Lake Wendouree. Add the McCartin factor as well as Jordyn Bibby and it is hard to see North getting beaten this season. It is a similar story at Sunbury with stars across each line however they are yet to be challenged by one of the top end teams. This game will be one well worth watching. Prediction: North Ballarat City to win in a close game.

BACCHUS MARSH V BALLARAT

Both Ballarat and Bacchus Marsh will be looking to find their way back into the winners circle this weekend after they missed the four points in round three. Bacchus Marsh would have been as shocked as the rest of us with their result against Melton and we have no doubts Saker and his team will be looking to bounce back. Ballarat were not as disappointing in their lost to East Point. This will be another cracking game that could go either way depending on which team turns up on the day. It will also be the first time Annie Hills takes on her old team since joining the Cobras in the off season. Prediction: Ballarat young guns to stand up under pressure and win in a tight one.

BACCHUS MARSH COBRA’S CHATTER The GB Forestry cobras had our first ever night game last Saturday night and had a mixed bag of results against the Melton bloods in front of a huge crowd,

Upcoming events

The football teams were outpointed by the bloods and our netball girls put up their normal gallant efforts.

Sponsor of the week

This week we host the Swans and really need to get back on track across both codes and all teams so every grade and team need the vocal support of our cobra crowd so let’s all get involved!

With the deck bar being open tonight please drop in after cheering cobras home and mingling in clubrooms with our players and the swans,we can all head down the main st and support a great sponsor!

The BMFNC have a number of infrastructure and player/team development programs currently either in action or in the planning stage so to anyone who thinks they can assist in any capacity at all please venture forward and offer your assistance to a committee member!

2019 SEASON RECORD

BALLARAT SWAN’S CHATTER

Today we travel down the Western Highway to Maddingly Park to take on the Bacchus Marsh FNC. The Cobras have always been a tough assignment on their home turf and today will be no exception. The Swans will be looking to open their account for the 2019 season. There was little joy from last week with the U/19’s recording a good win against East Point. An undermanned Senior and Reserve sides could not get the points against their more fancied opponents. Netballers came away with 2 wins in the ‘E’ grade and 19/Unders leaving both grades undefeated after 3 rounds. ‘A’ Grade suffered their first loss for the season as did the other grades. Around the Club: Congratulations to Ben Hobbs and Marcus Powling who both reach their respective milestones today. Ben will play his 100th Senior Club game and Marcus will reach 50 senior first games. Hopefully both will celebrate their milestones with a win.

AFL Victoria has dedicated this weekend’s round to ‘Beyond Blue’. In support of this round all Swans Football and Netball players will wear Blue tape on their right wrists. Social News: BFNC Annual Ball will be held on Saturday, 25 May 2019 at the Ballarat Greyhound Club. Tickets $60/Person and includes buffet dinner and Band ‘After Five’. For Bookings please contact Trecia Bik on 0402 413107. Congratulations to Jamie Allen picking up $500 from the 1860 Members Club. After the match today we head back to The Park Hotel to enjoy the hospitality of Jason and his staff and the presentation of the Match Day Awards. Good luck to all sides today. ‘WE ARE BALLARAT’

McDONALD’S BALLARAT FOOTBALL NETBALL LEAGUE

EAST POINT KANGAS CORNER

Welcome everyone to round 4, what we hope will be another successful round of footy and netball for season 2019. This week we will be taking on the Sebastopol Burra for our second home game of the season. Last week we fought it out at Alfredton oval against The Ballarat Swans, unfortunately our U/19 side couldn’t quite make it over the line, the Swans proving to be too strong with a 61-43 win. The reserves side had a huge win this week defeating Ballarat, 23-118. Special mentions to the best on ground during the game; Lachie Thornton, Chris Quinlan, Jamie Tung, Isaac Quick, Liam Gunn and Ryan Walsh. The seniors also had a nice win this week after a close start to the game with the final score being 84-134. Over at the netball we had a successful day with 4/6 sides having a good win. Unfortunately our U/19’s and E grade went down to two very strong swans

38

bfnl.com.au

sides in very tough matches. Luckily our D,C,B and A grades all came out with a win. Our A graders played at the later time of 4.30 this week and had a very close game against a young Swans side. Our girls just made it over the line in the 4th quarter with a final score of 37-45. The Best on court during this game was Clare Banwell, Beth Smith and Lauren Jew, Special mention also to new recruit Georgia Corbett who had her first game with the A grade side this week and slotted in seamlessly to the squad! This Saturday night our first Player Function will be held in the East Point club rooms, so it will be good to see as many Roo boys and girls as possible stay back for a drink and bite to eat from the East India food truck. Remember to keep up to date with everything East point on our social platforms on Facebook, twitter and Instagram @EastPointFNC.

Go Roos!

2019 SEASON RECORD

SEBASTOPOL FOOTBALL

Round 3 versus the Lake Wendouree Lakies was rather fruitless on the football field with defeats in all grades. The u19s kicked the dew off the ground but unfortunately went down by 97 points. Chris Slater was the only goal kicker for the young kookaburras, whilst young gun Irvan, Angus Achison, Jackson Rigg and Sam Hill all put in great games. The magoos found themselves only 6 points down at halftime, but a lack of match conditioning and fitness proved vital in the latter half of the match- eventually going down by 47. Ben Trew showed signs of getting over his sore tum tum and collected 70 disposals. Hammer Everett and Jack Mason were everywhere and played well. For the senior 22 the 2nd quarter of the game turned out to be their major downfall, with the Lakers scoring 38 of their 66 points. The end result was a 15 point loss. Cass gave his all, and Goodesy and Jim Carroll popped up for multiple goals. This week we celebrate MARSHALL CAIN’s 150th senior game. The red-headed mean demon has been a leader of the club for much of his career, showing all those that watch how to be courageous with his dash off a flank. Thanks to all those that put in time to make the Burra Ball a very enjoyable evening. We look forward to the next function. Good luck to all football and netball grades this weekend against the East Point Kangaroos UP THE BURRA!!!

NETBALL

It was a cold and windy day as we took to the courts against Lake Wendouree last Saturday. Throughout each grade we had some exciting passages of play and each team seems to be really working hard at training to ensure they are playing their best on game day.

U/19’s - Our U/19’s unfortunately went down to lakers in a good match, the girls seem to be learning new skills with the guidance of Caitlin and Tayla and working well together! E Grade - These girls were up at each break to take a very comfortable win, with minimal errors and a huge team effort the girls did extremely well! D Grade - Our D Graders played sensational 4 quarters. Although the girls lost they are progressing well together throughout the season!

C Grade - only down by 2 goals at quarter time these girls lost the game by 13 goals and fought right till the end! B Grade - it was exciting to see at half time our b graders were neck and neck, although Lake Wendouree got away in the end the team clearly has some positives to take away from this strong performance!

A Grade - after losing our gorgeous Prue Scott to an ACL injury the team was excited to bring Libby Hutt (15yrs old) up from B Grade to make her debut! The centre court worked extremely well and it’s exciting to see such great junior talent!! The side lost although they will get back to training and keep working to see what they can bring to the table as they take on East Point in our fearless leader Georgia Cann’s 100th game!! Thanks for a great night at the annual ball on Saturday night, it was great to dress up, drink up, celebrate and be around such a great group of people. As always, GO BURRA!

McDONALD’S BALLARAT FOOTBALL NETBALL LEAGUE

MELTON BLOODS BANTER Round 2 Results

The under 19s led the way with a handy win but from there the Ressies and Seniors could not match the opposition. It was the first time in over 10 years that our Unders have beaten East Point. In an entertaining game of footy the boys did a great job to fight for the win in what was a close final quarter. Jack O’Rourke was the Schnitz best on ground, Josh Cooper also had an excellent game. In the reserves, Kurt Baker was our best while at senior level Dyson Stevens led the way for the Bloods. Congratulations to Ben Archard, Shaun Campbell, Lachlan Walker, Billy Crofts, Ryan Carter, Liam Carter, Jaycob Hickey and Braedan Kight on their selection in the initial BFL Senior Interleague squad. The match is scheduled for Saturday May 18th at Mars Stadium against the Hampden Football League. We would also like to acknowledge our leadership groups for this year and in particular our captains - Ben Archard and Braedan Kight remain co-captains at senior level, Jake Buttigieg for the reserves and Hudson Wilde takes on the Under 19s captaincy. Well done boys and to all players in our leadership groups this year. Our players have been asked to find a player sponsor for 2019. You can find details of how to sign up as a player sponsor on our website, or speak to one of the players - they would appreciate your support. Out on the Netball Courts, things were similar with the 19 and Under girls claiming honours for the day. Our Open Age Women’s footballers also suffered a loss in their first ever game for the Bloods last Sunday. By all accounts they battled

42

bfnl.com.au

hard against an experienced opposition. It has been a lot of work getting the team together so well done to Beau and his team. A number of queries about going up have come in over the last week so interest in this new aspect of our operations is on the up. This week it is up the road to Cobra land for a match under lights for the Seniors. Hopefully the weather will hold for us. We don’t want to see a repeat of the last few night games.

Social Notes

The first big draw for 2019 is on again, after the Darley Game in Round 4. See Rayza or Leanne for Tickets. See the notices in the usual places for details. The Sponsors luncheon is also coming up on May 11th. All Meltonians are welcome and invitiations have been sent to all sponsors. Our Guest Speaker for the day is Charlie Bezzina, a retired Police Officer formerly of the Homicide Squad. It should be fascinating afternoon.

Memberships. Thanks to all who have paid up so far, it is very encouraging but please anyone who is in arrears please fix your dues up now. Sponsors of the week are Melton Garden Supplies and

Melton Toyota. As always, we ask our members to support the local businesses that support us. Keep in touch with all club activities via our website www.meltonfnc. com.au or on Facebook.

Mitch Ward, we hope your recovery from a medial ligament is quick and we can see you back leading the Under’s in next to no time. Your Darley family are right behind you all in your recovery.

McDONALD’S BALLARAT FOOTBALL NETBALL LEAGUE

REDAN THE LIONS DEN Last week we welcomed Sunbury to the City Oval for our first home game of the season.

FOOTBALL: The U19 started the day well with a consistent 4 quarter effort resulting in a great win, sharing the 9 goals kicked between 8 players. The boys will need to be ready to apply the same pressure again today if they are to come away another win against Lake Wendouree. A tough day on the park for the Ressies coming up against Sunbury who are sitting on top of the ladder, to their credit they battle away for the whole game, and will need to do the same again today as they look to get their first win on the board. A 7 goal first quarter set up a great start to the Senior match, with the second quarter producing 6 goals we went into the main break with a 45 point lead & looking in a commanding position. Sunbury produced their best football in the 3rd quarter to boot 6 goals while holding to us only 1 goal. Heading into the last quarter with only a 15 point lead we needed to dig deep to stop Sunburys’ momentum. 2 quick goals at the start of the quarter gave us some breathing space to run the game for a 20 point victory. Congratulations to Pat Britt last week on playing his 150th game for the club. Also to Cooper Atchison on making is senior debut & kicking 3 goals & being named in the best.

NETBALL: It was great to have our first home game for the season. We have a young positive group of girls this season who are eager to get into the club spirit. It is fantastic to see our U.17 and U.19 girls step up and fill in for the senior teams and it is also pleasing to see the development that takes place in the juniors move through to senior ranks. We were not able to secure 4 points in any grades against an older and more mature Sunbury. We look forward to meeting Lakers today, may it be a competitive, good spirited day of netball. Go Lions.

2019 SEASON RECORD

LAKE WENDOUREE LAKERS NOTES Welcome to round 4 and its nice to be settling into the Season after a bit of a stop start to the year. A great weekend last week when we hosted Sebastopol. Its always a good crowd & a good contest again Sebas & it made for a better day with some of our past players in attendance and being a double header with the juniors. A good day on the netball court winning 5 out of the 6 games with our Under 19s & A grade girls chalking up their first wins for the season. A deserving win to our A grade girls who were building to a strong game after only just going down in the previous 2 rounds to last years grand finalists. E grade had a couple of very impressive new recruits making their debut last week and unfortunately they were our only loss for the day - such a pity that Jen &

Maree couldn’t live the whole dream by taking home the win on their inaugural Lakers Game !! Well at least they now qualify for the end of season netball trip. It was also a successful day in the football department with a good effort by all three teams. The seniors followed up their good win from the week before with another solid win against Sebas, Micks boys are hitting their straps & playing very good football & the unders struck up their first win after a much better performance against North. It will be a tough day out today against an inform Redan but hopefully we can take them head on at all levels and then all get together tonight for some “boot scootin, knee slappin” fun as we head out to Mandy & Terrys for our Wild Wild West Night.

Go Lakers!!!

Senior football captain Andrew Duhau plays his 100th game this week , Football Highlights In the Seniors Redan’s four goals in the opening six minutes saw Sunbury playing catch up football and despite a really solid third term could not bridge the gap going down by 20 point. The Reserves continued on their winning way with a huge 77 point win. The Under 19s winning run ended at the hands of a very talented Redan team. Netball Highlights The girls had a fantastic day out at Redan winning all 6 games for their 2nd clean sweep of the season. 1879 Club Launch Today the club launches its 1879 Club which marks 140 years since the club was founded. 2019 SEASON RECORD

NORTH BALLARAT CITY ROOSTER RANT Trust we all enjoyed the bye last weekend but are now back on track for the trip down the highway to Sunbury. Our Seniors needing to get back to the winning list after going down to Lake Wendouree, and our A Grade netballers in fine form are continuing on from where they left off last year. After the game we are all heading back to our Sponsor– Golf House Hotel. Good luck to all teams today. Just to reflect on our last game and the service SMITH alias Ryan Luke has provided to the club in his 200th game. A true loyal Northie his work ethic and leadership on and off the field is second to none. Today we have two milestones in the netball. We congratulate Stacey McCartin on playing her 100th game, many of them as captain. We also congratulate one of our up and coming netballers, Maddy Selmon playing her 150th game for the club.

All the very best today ladies in your game. Get your gear ready and frock up for our forthcoming Ball to be held on June 15th now in the Functions Centre at NBSC. Tickets available shortly. This week is National Road Safety week. It is a timely reminder for all our players and supporters travelling to Sunbury today to take extra care on our roads. Road Safety is a shared responsibility. As road users we all need to comply with road rules, be safety conscious and alert in order to create a road safety culture where no one regards death or injury on the road as inevitable. The club in its support for TAC Towards Zero has a bus booked for footballers, netballers and supporters.

Go North!

2019 SEASON RECORD

NETBALL REPORT Netball Manager - Kim Bailey

It is a big weekend for our junior netballers, which sees the travel down to Arnolds Creek in Melton on Saturday to take on the Riddell District Football Netball League in the annual showdown.

Netball Australia CEO Marne Fechner said it’s been an exciting time for women’s sport in recent years and that she is delighted that netball has maintained its position as number one.

The BFNL have been quite successful over the past few years and will be eager to secure three wins on Saturday. It is really exciting to see the development of our junior players, with a number of our girls progressing through to VNL clubs and even a couple making our Victorian State representative teams. Poppy Douglass has just returned from Brisbane where she had a terrific tournament in the Victorian colours, whilst Lake Wendouree’s Charlotte Todd was also selected before being struck down with an ACL injury.

“To be recognised as the top team sport for Australian women and girls again in 2018, demonstrates the continuing, widespread connection that our country has to netball,” she said.

Our girls have prepared wonderfully for the tournament season with our 15&U team continuing to play in the Wendouree Netball Association in the open competition and are proving to be very competitive. They have also recently competed in the Ballarat Netball Association tournament where they were the winners of on the day. Our 13& U team have been doing equally as well, coming runners up in the same tournament.

“The sport continues to create opportunities for people of all ages to get involved in netball, from the Suncorp NetSetGO for children aged 5 to 10 years, through to ‘walking netball’ for older or less mobile demographics,” she said.

On Sunday, our girls will travel down to Geelong for the revamped Barwon Junior Championships. The BJC’s is an important tournament in the Netball Victoria pathway and will provide mentoring opportunities for our umpires and coaches and the players will have access to Mel Bragg, Collingwood Magpie Netballer, who will speak to the girls about their pathway opportunities. It should be a great day and a fantastic preparation leading into Association Championships coming up in Warnambool. Good luck girls. Guess what? Netball has retained its position as the leading team sport for women and girls, according to the latest AusPlay data released by Sport Australia recently. The report shows strong participation in netball with more than 1 million people actively participating in the sport and naming netball as the sport they most strongly identify with. The nationwide AusPlay survey, which has been running since October 2015, is Australia’s largest and most comprehensive sport and physical activity survey conducted by Sport Australia.

“The data reflects netball’s strong national footprint, with high levels of participation in metropolitan, regional and very remote regions of Australia.” Fechner also referenced the wide variety of ways people can participate in netball in Australia.

“We’re always looking to create meaningful opportunities for more Australians to play netball and it’s great to see the impact of this commitment reflected in the 2018 AusPlay data.” The survey showed that the top three motivations for people to participate in netball were social reasons (52%), fun and enjoyment (50%) and physical health or fitness (45%) and the majority of participants who play do so with their local netball club (just under 70%). The AusPlay data also demonstrated that netball retains players for longer than other sports, with strong female participation into adulthood (18-24 years of age), in fact netball is the activity with the second largest adult female participation rates (89%), behind Pilates (90%). So, let’s keep the trend going and let’s have more people playing netball more often. We have a fantastic weekend of netball ahead with some great games, and none less than the battle for top spot – Sunbury v North Ballarat City. This will confirm who will be premierships favourites and should be a terrific game. Good luck to all teams this weekend and Happy Mother’s Day.

Happy Netballing. bfnl.com.au
