BALLARAT FNL V HAMPDEN FNL
MESSAGE FROM BFNL As joint chairs of the McDonald’s Ballarat FNL, it gives us great pleasure to welcome everyone to Mars Stadium today for the return of interleague football to Ballarat for the Worksafe Community Championships.
and is sure to be a fantastic display. Ballarat FNL East is being led by Troy Scoble, with Chris Banwell returning to coach Ballarat FNL West.
After an absence of 4 years, the league is excited to host a game as we welcome the players, officials and supports of the Hampden FNL.
The Ballarat FNL East team will be made up of players from Bacchus Marsh, Darley, Melton, Melton South and Sunbury while BFNL West will include players from Ballarat, East Point, Lake Wendouree, North Ballarat City, Redan and Sebastopol.
The BFNL has a long, proud and successful history of representative football over many years and today is a continuation of that history. The loss last year when “hosting” the Goulburn Valley League at the MCG was an experience that all players who had the opportunity to participate in will never forget and gives us the motivation to get back on the winners list this year.
Top line interleague netball of course makes a welcome return with this game against the Hampden FNL looking to be one of the highlights. Hampden netball have not played interleague netball for a number of years and are keen to some back with a bang while the Ballarat FNL netball team are looking to get the win after a number of years out of the interleague program as well.
Senior football coach Chris Stuhldreier, himself a decorated and highly respected coach and player, has assembled a team today that is brimming with experience at all levels of football. The league thanks Chris and the players for the many hours that have gone in to todays games preparations and wish them all the best.
Todays games would not be possible of course without the valued support of our partners, in particular Haymes Paint, McDonalds Ballarat and the City of Ballarat. We thank the council for the fantastic facilities we have today that will showcase football and netball across country Victoria.
A new concept has developed this year with the implementation of the BFNL East / West Challenge that will see the best Under 19 players from across the league compete as the curtain raiser today. Looking at the talent on display, you could argue this could be a stand alone game in its own right
Good luck to all teams competing todays.

MESSAGE FROM HFNL The Hampden Football Netball League are proud to be part of the 2019 Worksafe AFL Victoria Community Championship this weekend. Our Senior footballers and Open netballers are looking forward to playing against the Ballarat Football Netball League and we thank them for the opportunity to test our talent and skills against some of the best opposition in country Victoria. It’s a particular thrill for our footballers to be playing on Mars Stadium, an AFL venue only last week described by Western Bulldogs captain Easton Wood as the best surface he’s played on in the AFL. Our interleague coaches have put in a great deal of effort to be ready for this weekend. Our Senior Football Coach Jonathan Brown has a strong family link to the Hampden League. He started his career at South Warrnambool and is following in his fathers footsteps coaching the Hampden Interleague side and giving back to grassroots football.
the same time as our footballers and it’s a format we hope our players and supporters enjoy. I also would like to acknowledge and thank our interleague coaching panels, support staff and Executive members for their commitment and support of our league. I’m sure it is appreciated by all involved with the Hampden League, particularly the players who we are doing this for. Finally I wish all teams the best for today. May the best teams win. GO THE BOTTLE GREENS.
Tim Mason President
Hampden Football Netball League
Melanie Star, our Open Netball Coach has done a great job coordinating our netballers for this weekend. It is the first time in more than ten years that our netballers have played interleague at

WORKSAFE AFL VICTORIA COUNTRY HOW INCLUSIVE IS YOUR CLUB? VicHealth research shows that nearly half of women aged 25 and over find sporting clubs intimidating. Many women are too afraid to try a new activity because they’re afraid of being judged. In 2015, Sport England launched a gamechanging campaign to empower women to become more physically active – regardless of their ability or body shape. The campaign inspired a massive 2.8 million women to try (or get back into) fitness and sport. After seeing the success of that campaign, VicHealth was determined to do the same for the women of Victoria. The This Girl Can – Victoria campaign launched in 2018 and has since celebrated and inspired thousands of women to play sport across the state. This Girl Can – Victoria supports gender equality by challenging traditional gender roles and by celebrating women who are fit and strong.
Tell us what changes your club has made to create a welcoming and inclusive environment for women – particularly those who haven’t exercised in a while, or who haven’t tried your club, facility or activity before. Tell us in 400 words or less how your club has gone about supporting more women and girls to play footy. The winning entry will win for their nominated club a $1,000 Footymart voucher to help buy football equipment to support even greater participation at your club. You may like to think about four key strategies outlined in the ‘This Girl Can Victoria – Helping Women and Girls Get Active’ guide and how your club has implemented these. The guide can be found via: www.thisgirlcan.com.au. Entries close May 31, 2019.
We want to change the fact that women are too afraid to try a new activity because they’re afraid of being judged. We want to empower all women to get active and get involved in footy – regardless of their background, age, body shape or ability. bfnl.com.au

AT THE BAR with ‘The insider’
and Chris Stuhldrier (BFNL Coach) Chris Stuhldrier’s goalkicking achievements in Victorian Country Football have been unrivalled. The 53 year old booted 100 goals in nine consecutive seasons throughout the 1990’s and was recently inducted into the Goulburn Valley Football League Hall of Fame (2016). The legend full forward terrorised defenders for over a decade with Kyabram (GVFNL), Lavington (Ovens & Murray) and Bacchus Marsh (Ballarat Football Netball League). Today, Chris will lead the BFNL as head coach against the Hampden Football Netball League led by AFL and South Warrnambool legend Jonathan Brown. INSIDER: Apart from BFNL Head Coach, are you involved in footy from week to week? CHRIS: I’m an Assistant coach for Pater Davey at Bacchus Marsh looking after the forwards. INSIDER: Your two boys, Riley and Nick are regular senior players with Bacchus Marsh - that must give you a buzz each week? CHRIS: Yeah it does, I really enjoy it - it’s good to be involved. At the same time though I do give them their space - we hardly talk about footy much when we catch up - there’s no pressure. INSIDER: You’ve had an amazing career Chris, a ‘Plugger’ Lockett type career in the country - you kicked 100 goals in nine consecutive seasons surely there was some AFL interest along the way?
CHRIS: I kicked 20 twice. Once against Wangaratta and the other against Tasmania in the State Police Carnival representing Victoria. INSIDER: Goalkicking is a struggle for some reason across the board - what’s the best advice you could give any youngster or established player for that matter when shooting for goal? CHRIS: Develop a routine. Repeat, repeat practice and keep it simple - to the point where it’s muscle memory. You should feel confident enough to kick it with your eyes closed. INSIDER: What are your observations in the decline of accurate goalkicking across all levels? CHRIS: I see the same player kicking the ball with a different approach everytime which can’t help walking around in an arch etc. Poor teaching must be a contributing factor and lack of practice. INSIDER: How has the buy-in been from the players ahead of this Interleague fixture? CHRIS: They’ve been great and the support from most clubs has been terrific. The players we have in the squad are committed and want to prove themselves on the bigger stage - I wouldn’t have it any other way. INSIDER: Rep footy sides can be loaded with mids around a spine - how have you gone about selection?
CHRIS: Yes there was but i had a dose of viral meningitis when I was in that 18-20 age so I missed a bit of footy at that key age. When I was kicking a lot of goals in my 20’s, St Kilda were looking to pick me up in the mid season draft but I took the conservative approach and settled on furthering my career in the police force.
CHRIS: I’ve played in four VIc Health winning sides - all were like for like selections based on their positions at club level. Playing half a dozen extra mids out of position doesn’t work.
INSIDER: What was the most number of goals you kicked in a game?
CHRIS: We’re here to win and we will be held accountable.
INSIDER: Finally Chris, last year at the MCG, Ballarat losing to the Goulburn Valley was highly skilled but a ‘soft watch’ - What can we expect today?

BALLARAT TAKE ON HAMPDENS BEST with ‘Scoop’
The Ballarat Football Netball League is ready for the challenge laid down by one of the strongest Hampden Football Netball League squads in recent memory when the two sides meet in today’s 2019 Worksafe AFL Victoria Community Championship encounter. Both sides are laden with enough top end talent to warrant compulsory billing for the footy purest and footy tragic alike. Ballarat will take up to eight VFL listed players into today’s game while Hampden boast a mix of former AFL listed and current VFL listed players.. Today’s game looks like one for the ages. Ballarat coach Chris Stuhldrier is not here to represent a bruise free style of play by any stretch that can sometimes be symptomatic in representative football. “Our boys will be accountable, I assure you,” he said. “We’ve selected a squad that is honest, flexible, highly talented and above all else, a group that wants to represent Ballarat and impress at the highest level.” Jacob Brown (East Point, Essendon), Jake McQueen (East Point, Essendon), Dylan Landt (Sunbury - Essendon), Scott Carlin (Lake Wendouree, Werribee), Nick Stuhldrier (Bacchus Marsh,Werribee), Liam Carter (Williamstown, Melton), Arthur Armstrong (Lake Wendouree, Northern Blues) and Lachie McLean (Redan, North Melbourne) make up the VFL listed talent of the Ballarat squad. Their youthful exuberance, talent and
willingness to succeed at a higher level is sure to test the resilience of the visitors. When you add 183 VFL gamer Lachie George (Redan) and former Williamstown jet Lachie Bramble (Sunbury) into the mix, the message is clear bring it on ‘Browny’, show us what you’ve got! AFL and South Warrnambool legend Jonathan Brown (coach)will lead the Hampden League today, which is a massive drawcard in it’s own right for the Championships. ‘Browny’ told the HFNL website the buy-in for the cause from both club and player had been impressive. “It’s great that so many of the HFNL’s best players have made themselves available for this Interleague match,” he said. “With the exception of a couple of legitimate injuries, we’ve got the best players in our league to choose our final team from.” Hampden will be hoping to regenerate the courage and will that saw them outlast the Bendigo Football Netball League last year in round one of the Championships by nine points after trailing at 3/4 time. For Ballarat, the thrill of playing on the MCG against the Goulburn Valley Football League in 2018 was not enough to see them through, falling short 106-128 in a most entertaining affair. Ballarat will be hungry for redemption in 2019 with the pride of Vic Country’s west and south west now on the line. Deserved bragging rights await the winner .

INTERLEAGUE NETBALL PREVIEW by Grace Bibby
BFNL will this weekend clash with Hamden Football Netball League. Under new coach Michael Saker the BFNL will have their work cut out. The Hampden are a strong netball league and given the BFNL has not had a senior interleague last season they will be starting on the back foot. The team posses several young up and coming stars but the question will be how they perform under the pressure of senior netball against bigger bodies. Saker has also selected a number of players for their experience at this level including Kara Hart, Kirsty Walsh and Jordyn Bibby. All three of those players have been pivotal parts to the leagues success over a number of years. Hart will hold down a position in defence while Walsh will be in the mid court and Bibby will be in attack. Bibby returns to the league after a stint on the sidelines and out in the Central Highlands League. Maddi Quayle will have her first taste of senior interleague after dominating at junior level almost ten years ago. Kaila Ingham will also make her debut after a solid start to the season in the Bacchus Marsh mid court. Maddison Selmon and Poppy Douglass will each be looking to put their last game of BFNL behind them and regain some confidence playing at the higher level.
Both players have outstanding skills but at such a young age their mental strength on court is sometimes questionable Saker has said he will play his own game rather than focusing on the tactical side of the Hampden League which will mean they are fast and direct. If they have agile defenders he will rely on the body positioning of Bibby. The defensive end will no doubt have a tough match up however with the height and length of both Emma Church and Beth Smith they will give themselves every chance of stopping plenty of goals. Both players have plenty of run out of defence and their long reach makes shooting difficult and rebounds hard to come by. The BFNL squad had their first opportunity to train together on Thursday night prior to dress presentations. Obviously that is not ideal preparation for any team but given they know each other pretty well we still expect a red hot start from the home team. Of the nine players selected eight have represented the league before either at junior or senior level and we are excited to see what they can deliver come this afternoon at Mars Stadium. It is great to see the BFNl senior team back in action after last year we were unable to source a venue to take on GV. Unfortunately today there is no 17 and under netball due to not being able to source an opposition team. bfnl.com.au
