14TH SEPT, 2013
Maffra and Morwell did battle at Morwell in the 2013 Preliminary Final, and it was the Tigers right from the first bounce. With the first four inside 50s of the match, Morwell had two goals on the board, both from the boot of ex-Collingwood player Tarkyn Lockyer. Maffra replied through Darren Sheen, but the Tigers’ lead went out to three goals with majors at the 18 and 21 minute marks through Lachlan Dowling and a clever banana kick from Joel Soutar. A late goal to Maffra’s Daniel Bedggood saw Morwell’s quarter time lead at 12 points. Morwell could have had the game sealed by half time. After Mannon Johnston’s first minute goal, Morwell kicked eight successive behinds, a run that was broken by Ryan Tatterson’s fifty metre goal. Sheen’s second for the Eagles brought Morwell’s half time lead back to 23 points. Morwell added two goals to Maffra’s six behinds (two posters) in the third term and the game was sealed by the 12 minute mark of the final quarter when Adam Bailey put the Tigers 48 points ahead. On ballers Joel Soutar, Adam Bailey and Tarkyn Lockyer were named as best for Morwell, while Winston Gieschen, Alex Carr and James Huts were best for Maffra.

20 YEARS AGO … 12TH SEPT, 1998 Moe aimed for a fairytale turn around when they lined up against Leongatha in the GLFL 1998 Preliminary Final. Coming off winless seasons in 1996 and 1997, the Lions were the big story of ’98 and had beaten the Parrots by 35 points in the Qualifying Final a fortnight earlier. Leongatha forward Adrian Campbell, but it was his counterpart Tim Traill who rose for the Parrots. The teams went goal-for-goal to be 5.1 apiece at the first break, but Leongatha kicked away in the second term to lead by three goals at half time. Traill was on to his second opponent by this stage and had kicked six of Leongatha’s ten first half goals. Moe’s on-ballers coach Lachlan Sim, Troy Makepeace and Jason Shields had won the battle of the midfield but the Lions lacked tall marking forwards, Jordan Meikle being the stand-out for them with

PAST PRELIMINARY FINALS By Paul Carter
30 YEARS AGO … 10TH SEPT, 1988 Morwell went into its fourth consecutive Preliminary Final against Maffra which was seeking its first Senior premiership in forty years. Constant rain throughout the match spoiled it as a spectacle, with the so-called “one percenters” becoming the order of the day. Maffra broke the ice with goals to Jason O’Doherty and Peter Allman, Morwell’s Alan Lowe goaling just before quarter time to bring Maffra’s lead back to five points. Early in the second Peter Petrou levelled the scores, but the Tigers could have done far better as they added 1.6 for the term to trail by six points at half time. The third quarter was where the game was won. It took until the 17 minute mark for Morwell’s first goal through Paul Giardina, courtesy of a 50 metre penalty. Lowe kicked his second for the match shortly after before Shane Allman registered Maffra’s only score for the quarter with a cleverly soccered goal. Morwell had rallied with 3.5 to one goal to take a valuable eleven point lead into the final term. Just two goals were kicked in the final term, one to each side, the conditions having tested the players’ stamina. Champion ruckman Peter Geddes goaled for Maffra at the 13 minute mark to give the Eagles a sniff of a chance. Peter Petrou sealed the game with a goal after he has intercepted a poor defensive kick out from the Eagles. On-baller Peter Henderson, ruckman Kevin Fleming and rover Stephen Allison were Morwell’s best. Maffra rover Brian Jones was their best, along with defender Darren Bennett and Geoff Raven.

40 YEARS AGO … 16TH SEPT, 1978 With the 1978 1st Semi-Final having been played on the Saturday and the 2nd Semi-Final the day after, expectation was high that the Parrots’ extra day of rest, coupled with their great form in beating Warragul by 56 points, would see them start warm favourites against Yallourn/Yallourn North after their sapping loss to Traralgon. The Blues quickly put that idea to rest when they started brightly to gain a handy quarter time lead. Rover Ron Lee and half forward Phil Fleming were both on target to set the Blues up for a 32 point half time lead as they slammed on another six goals in the second quarter. Gary Young had done a great job in curbing the Leongatha coach Neville Stone, however the ruck-rover combination Ian Salmon and Tim Maxwell kept the Parrots’ hopes alive. Both teams added four goals in the third term to maintain YYN’s advantage. Leongatha threw everything they
had into a desperate final term, but big Ray Sweeney was a rock for YYN in defence, taking mark after mark, and turning the Leongatha advances back. Sweeney was named as their best, well supported by ruckman John Lovison and half forward Mike Lovison. Tim Maxwell was dynamic with his roving, capped with six goals and Ian Salmon was tireless in the ruck.

50 YEARS AGO … 14TH SEPT, 1968 Moe and Bairnsdale played a heart-stopping Preliminary Final in 1968. Bairnsdale was first out of the blocks with three unanswered goals in the opening ten minutes to Ron Rawson, Kevin Coverdale and Bruce Nicholes. The quarter was well advanced before Moe’s first goal, a soccered goal to Peter Box. This started a mini flood of goals as the Jennings brothers, Ian and Ken, goaled to level the scores. A goal apiece to Ray Miller (Bairnsdale) and Box’s second saw them level pegging again before Ian Jennings snapped cleverly to give Moe a one goal lead. Box’s third goal opened proceedings in the second quarter, Bairnsdale replying strongly through two goals to John Gallus, Bairnsdale again in the lead. Ian Jennings’ third goal put the Lions ahead only to see Gallus kick his third and take Bairnsdale in at half time leading by two points. Moe looked to have made the match winning move when they kicked four goals to one in the third term to lead by 16 points. Bairnsdale, which had headed the ladder with just one loss and a draw, weren’t going to exit the season quietly and were relentless in attacking the goals. They added 5.4 to Moe’s 3.2 in the final term, only to come up two points short. Brian Shiels was Moe’s best along with defenders Bob Johnson and Danny O’Brien. For Bairnsdale they named Ray Miller best with John Callery and John Gallus also winning their particular battles.

TRARALGON
FOOTBALL CLUB
Football Wrap: Well after a very emotional and sad week for the football community our club was privileged to host the firs ever night final for the Gippsland League las Saturday. The 2nd semi-final was held at the Traralgon Rec Reserve under lights which meant a late start for our Thirds and Reserves teams who were competing. Our Thirds took to the field against Moe and after having the week off prior, they were a little sluggish at the start with Moe holding a 5-point lead at half time. A reminder from their coach at the break that we had a job to do and our lads showed the class that has resulted in a birth in this year’s Grandfinal. In a dominant display after half time we kicked 9 goals 4 points to Moe’s 3 goals 2 points to run out 33-point winners. Now we have a week off to prepare for the biggest game of the year. Better players were L. Tripodi, C. Ruyters, J. Palmer, M. Luckie, P. Strong, B. White The Reserves played Maffra who are a very slick outfit and although we struggled for numbers, the boys played their hearts out but were well beaten in the end. The pleasing thing was we never gave up and managed to hold Maffra to just 3 goals after half time. This week we hopefully welcome back a few players that have been missing recently and with some help from a couple of thirds, should field a very competitive side. Better players against Maffra were T. Northe, W. Gaudion, J. Barnes, T. Hourigan, J. Sands, R. Battista On Sunday, our Seniors took on Sale in the knockout 1st semi-final and came away with a terrific hard-fought win. The most pleasing thing about this game was the debut of one of our Under 16 boys in Chance Doultree who certainly didn’t look out of place at this level. With a full list to choose from the lads are looking forward to this week’s contest against Maffra. Best players were L. Stockdale, M. Mustoe, J. McMahon, C. Little, D. White, R. Hildebrand A good weekend for the club last week as we still have 7 out of 10 teams alive in the finals series with 3 netball and 1 football side straight into the Grandfinal. Netball Wrap: What a great weekend – three netball teams have progressed straight to the Grand Final. Congratulations to U17s, B Grade and A Grade. A Grade had a very comfortable win over Morwell 74-46 in what was supposed to be the Grand Final preview. B Grade met Moe in a fierce game. The Moe C was sent off in the dying minutes, but this had no impact on the end result with TFNC winning by 6 goals. Under 17s had a close game against ladder leaders
THE MAROONS Wonthaggi but dug deep to take an exciting win 42-41. C Grade couldn’t get the win over Maffra 37-46. They will play Wonthaggi in the Preliminary Final and should be confident of a win, beating Wonthaggi both times (by 14 & 7) during the season. Club Wrap: The Traralgon Football Netball Club would like to thank all those who participated in a display of remembrance for Jack Strong and showed their support to his family in between the thirds and reserves games last week end, especially the Moe & Maffra Football Netball Clubs and Sale & Sth Gippsland umpiring panels. In closing, Congratulations to our Senior Coach Mark Collison who plays his 100th senior game for the club this week. Since returning to our club to coach he has coached and played in our 2015 premiership, coached the club to 3 preliminary finals since, 3 x B&F and represented the league and Vic Country on numerous occasions. A great career and a terrific achievement to play 100 club games. Good luck to all participants this weekend.

Last weekend our teams competed on both days of the finals. Firstly, our ‘A’ Grade girls had a rare 5:00pm start at Traralgon. Then on the Sunday we had the U16 boys, the U17 girls and the ‘B’ Grade girls all compete in tough windy conditions at Maffra.
NETBALL – ‘A’ Grade - It was good to see such a strong turn-out of supporters including the footballers at the Saturday twilight game. Unfortunately, we got off to a slow start against the talented Traralgon side and a back injury kept tenacious Rachel Allison from taking to the court, did not help. Traralgon played a fast-moving game and were crisper with their passing and the Maroons very tall goal shooter proved too strong. Despite the slow start the Morwell girls all stuck at it and played to the final bell. Daisy LeBron Hill shot some great goals from all distances but we could not bridge the gap after half-time.

In ‘B’ Grade on the Sunday we played Warragul at Maffra and it was a tight game all day in very windy conditions. The Morwell girls stuck to the game plan and in a tight finish they prevailed by one goal and earn a Preliminary final opportunity. Best Players in a great team performance were Nadine Sloan, Ellie Pollutro and Nicole Dalton.
and Laura Fleming to give the ‘A’ Grade team every chance of a win. In ‘B’ Grade we have a good mix of experience and youth across the court and the girls are determined to take every opportunity at Moe.
FOOTBALL – Brett Sherriff and the U16 boys took on the talented Wonthaggi boys at Maffra. Conditions were very trying and it was tough in and under footy that was going to prevail. Unfortunately, in a tense and tight last term, despite having the ball in our half for much of the quarter, we just could not convert a major. Brett Sherriff and Steve Hutchison thanked the boys for a great year and we hope they are all back next year to see continued improvement in our junior squads. Best at Maffra were Damian Hough, Brayden Gillespie, Tom Caile, Nathan Noblett, Blake Hughes & Zac Carlson.
SPONSORS - MFNC wish to acknowledge all the sponsors who have supported our club in season 2018. The U17 Girls had the tough task of beating Maffra on their home court and having not beaten the Eagles in the regular season. To their credit the girls started with great intensity and led by 2 at the first break. Maffra change their line-up and had a strong 2nd term to lead by 9 at half-time. The Morwell girls rallied hard in the 3rd and final terms but we went down by 6 goals in a gutsy effort by all the squad. Rahni Styles was a stand-out in a talented team that has only two top-age players; this bodes well for a great 2019 for this squad. Many thanks to coach Gail Macfarlane and her support team who have worked tirelessly with the girls all season.
Preliminary Final Day today at Moe and as expected it is our ‘A’ and ‘B’ grade netball squad who have shown the resilience and talent to go deep into September. Today we expect to welcome the return of Rachel Allison and look for the experience of Courtney Garth, Claire Allison
NEW SENIOR FOOTY COACH
MFNC is very pleased to announce Denis Knight as the Senior Football non-playing coach for 2019 & 2020. Denis is a highly-credentialed player and coach. From 2013 to 2017, Denis coached Norwood in the Eastern Football League and he was the League representative coach in 2015. Many will recall Denis playing at Springvale where he was also Assistant coach in the late 1990’s when the club won 3 premierships. We warmly welcome Denis as he will make a significant contribution to the success of our club going forward.

CLUB NOTES BAIRNSDALE Prelim Week, no more second chances! Our three finals teams are keeping their premiership hopes alive and will be doing all they can from having them snuffed out today. Last Saturday was 2nd Semi day @ Traralgon with our 16’s footyers and 15’s nettyers earning themselves a chance to slingshot straight to the grand final. The 16’s took on Sale in what turned out to be an epic encounter. The ball was all over the ground like a pinball and the manic pace was maintained throughout. Chances came and went. Supporters were checking drawn match rules and the clock kept marching on. In the end it was a 4 point loss in a cracking game of footy. Lewie, Flynn, Caleb, Reece & Randall were best along with Byron who kicked 4. Today it’s Wonthaggi and the season score of 2-0 our way doesn’t give us a head start at the first bounce. Let’s show ‘em what we’ve got. Our 15&Under girls started slowly against the previously undefeated Sale. An 8 goal first qtr deficit was too great to peg back and create the scoreboard pressure needed to test the dominant Sale outfit. A 14 goal loss was hard to take, softened by the chance of redemption through today’s prelim. Best performances went to Tyla Alvin & Abbey Bills for their strength and hard work in the midcourt. Today it’s a finals rematch with Drouin for another opportunity to make the big dance. They’re an extremely physical team but we’re sure our skills & polish will prevail. All the best to Fran and the Girls. Sunday, the 18’s headed to Maffra to take on Sale. Great skills were on show despite the blustery conditions. The footy was tough & hard. All tied up at the long break, we showed our superior fitness and composure to cross the line with a 17 point win. Gus, Brad, Perko, Chaz, Cooky &

Timmsy were best. Wyksey with 2 being the only multiple among 7 goal kickers. The last time we played Moe @ Moe we prevailed by 20 points. The ledger is balanced so far this season at 1 each. The boys will need to give each other Ando’s 120% if they want a shot at the title next week. We have 11 Redlegs travelling to Morwell for the League Vote Count & Presentation Night on Monday 17th. CLUB NOTES WONTHAGGI Under 16’s With the long drive to Maffra, The boys took a little time to warm up. With a 3 goal lead to Morwell going into the quarter time break. The boys came out firing in the second quarter, kicking 4 goals to Morwell”s 1 goal. This saw Power level the scores going into half time. Our boys came into the second half with renewed vigour and a ” take no prisoners “ attitude. Both sides battled hard and managed to kick 1 goal 2 points each, leading into the three quarter time break. With a speed from Dasha that gave everyone goose bumps, our young men ran onto the ground and showed sheer dogged determination to win the ball. The pressure on the Morwell boys was intense, which saw them make mistakes that Power was able to convert to a goal. With the narrowest of margins, both sides were working hard. Power kept to the task for the whole quarter and with the ball up the Morwell end for the last few minutes of the game, the Power boys showed a level of calm and maturity beyond their years. Thus resulting in a 4 point win. Power’s “ Young Men “ are proving that their best is definitely good enough and by working as a team, that anything is well and truly possible. Let’s continue to aim for the starts GO POWER. C Grade, Another fantastic hard fought win for the girls, against a young fast Drouin
side. All players contributed to the 4 goal
win, to secure a spot in today’s preliminary final at Moe. Stand out players were, Zoe, Kealey and Whitney.
U17’s It was always going to be a tough
game when the two top teams meet, and
it wasn’t a disappointment. Going goal for goal in the last quarter, it came down to
the final centre and who had possession.
Unfortunately the timer beat us to the goal ring. A great game to watch with everyone giving their all.
U 13’s Wow, what an amazing game by the
U13’s to win through to the preliminary final. Thanks to Maffra for such great contest.
The team was composed when it counted, handling the pressure of overtime and the
finals atmosphere with great maturity. It was a fantastic team effort. Thanks to all our
supporters helping us get over the line. We’ll give it our best shot today. GO POWER. GO POWER ,You Bloody Bewdy

CLUB NOTES LEONGATHA The second week of the finals produced excellent results in the football but unfortunately the netball result was probably as expected. On Saturday history was made at Traralgon as the league held its first night final. Many people had objected strongly to the change, but the proof was in the pudding. To be fair if the weather was poor we would all be saying it was a poor decision, it wasn't and the result was pretty positive. The U13 netballers had the big task of taking on the powerful Sale in the 2nd Semi Final. The final result was 22 goals to the wrong side of the line but our girls should be proud of their efforts. Sale plays a brilliant brand of netball with a cohesion that belies their age group. Our girls have genuinely closed the gap between the two sides as the year has progressed but Sale are just too strong for us at this stage. Today we front up to our closest rivals in Wonthaggi Power, it was a thriller last time we met so hopefully we can get the win and have one last crack at Sale. The Seniors also played in the 2nd Semi Final, taking on Maffra. The Parrots side was at full strength for the first time for the year, which was an exciting prospect. The game started at a frantic pace and the heat was on at the contest. Maffra had an obvious plan, attack the ball fiercely and play on at break neck speed. They had the Parrots rattled early and if not for the resolute defence of the back 6 we could have been in more trouble on the score board. Maffra continued the onslaught of pressure in the second quarter and it seemed like we would not be able to continue to absorb their brand of football for much longer. As the term progressed the crowd started to sense our boys were starting to work their way into the game and we only 5 points down at half time. Then something happened! After the break it was immediately there for everyone to see, the Parrots were all of a sudden ‘on’. Critical contests started to go our way. Targets were being hit and we started to move the ball with confidence. As we surged the ball forward time after time the forwards came to the party and started to land the telling blows needed on the scoreboard. This was the best quarter of football the Parrots have
played for many years. The players grew as the quarter progressed and by three quarter time the lead looked like a winning one. The first goal came quickly in the last quarter putting any ideas of a Maffra come back to bed. The boys played the game out really well, giving them a great launching pad into the grand final. On Sunday the Reserves played in the 1st Semi Final against Moe at Maffra. The side looked strong although they were mindful that Moe had had their measure during the year. The game started at a high intensity, as you would expect in a final. Moe were having the better of the scoreboard although our boys seemed to dominating possession. In the second term we started to get on top on the scoreboard as well and by half time had the lead. The third term it was all Leongatha and we were looking the better team. Moe then pulled back 2 goals late to narrow the margin to 12 points at the final change. The last quarter was an arm wrestle but the lads worked very hard and were able to have a 19-point victory. Today we take on old rivals Traralgon. Have a great game lads! Go Parrots!

SALE FO
The Sale Football Club would like to say thankyou to all our Players, Supporters, Sponsors and Families that have been involved this year. The Committee and club are very proud of everyone’s efforts and contributions this season. The season has unfortunately come to an end for our senior brigade at the hands of Traralgon played at Maffra on Sunday. The team have come leaps and bounds from last season and we are proud of the boy’s achievements and commitment to the club that they showed. Young Jack ‘Syrup’ Mapleson was a true fighter all day and was awarded our Best on Ground for the day. Sale 8.9-57 fell short to Traralgon 10.7-67. Best- Syrup, B.McKay, J.Allison, Z.Hurley, B.Dessent and J.Lipman. The U18s played a strong B’dale outfit and went into the main break with the scores all tied up at 26 points each. Although the boys were full of confidence coming out for the 3rd quarter, they couldn’t hold on and went down 8.7-55 to 6.2-38. Best- T.Stephenson, L.Staplehurst, L.Williams, M.Reeves, Z.Hider and E.Dyer On Saturday the fourths boys played top side Bairnsdale and the boys were up for the challenge. After a solid 3 quarters of back and forth footy. The best was left to the last quarter, trailing by 8 points the boys didn’t take a backward step and with 2 goal to none last quarter means our U16 team IS GOING TO THE BIG DANCE! A huge effort boys and welldone. Scores- Sale 8.7-55 to 7.9-51. BestW.McKinnon, B.Safstrom, D.Byron, H.Swarski, M.Hawkins and S.Dunnett. What a way to finish off the season with a clean sweep for our netballers with 6 wins last weekend in Leongatha. Our superstar under 13 girls were challenged in their first real test for the season however they showed they knew how to respond when the pressure was on with a hard fought 15 goal win. CLUB NOTES MAFFRA Our C grade continued their minor premiership form into the final against Traralgon, and pulled away in the final quarter to 46-37 victory. Anna Gaw and Jemma O’Brien were steady, shooting well in goals, while Hannah Bourke and Megan Raine were impenetrable in defence, getting a hand to most rebounds. See you next week girls! While all three of Maffra’s junior netball sides looked down the line during the first semi-final on Sunday, only the under 17s walked away victorious to fight another battle.
