5 YEARS AGO … 7TH & 8TH SEPT, 2013 Ladder leaders Sale went straight to the Grand Final when they overcame Maffra at Moe. The weather certainly played its role as wet, slippery conditions marred the game as a spectacle. Magpies coach Matt Ferguson led from the front to be their best player and kicked four goals. Andrew Quirk led a rock solid Sale defence that conceded just a single goal up to three quarter time. Quirk kept leading goalkicker Darren Sheen to one goal for the match. On Sunday, Morwell rebounded from its Qualifying loss with a hard earned win in the 1st Semi-Final against Wonthaggi. Tom Crosby dominated the ruck duels and Adam Bailey was a driving force from the midfield. Inaccuracy almost caused the Tigers’ finals campaign to come to a halt, as, despite its dominance on ball, it couldn’t make the break away from the Power. Morwell kicked 2.8 in the first quarter and led by six behinds at the half way mark. They made their break in the third quarter where they added four goals to two to lead at three quarter time by 22 points. Jack Blair and Aaron Ware were tireless workers for the Power.

goalkicking. Warragul’s third quarter blast of nine goals saw them turn an eight point half time deficit into a handy 29 point lead in Sunday’s 1st Semi-Final at Drouin. The match opened brightly with the Gulls leading by a goal at quarter time, Maffra responding with four goals to two in the second term. Matt Gray was winning well in the ruck, backed up by midfielders Ryan Davey and Desi Barr. The Coleman brothers, Ben and Michael, showed out for the Eagles. The move of Nick Edney up forward paid dividends with four goals, while Adrian Burgiel won well with six majors.

10 YEARS AGO … 6TH & 7TH SEPT, 2008 Warm conditions with a tricky breeze greeted Sale and Morwell at Leongatha in the 2nd Semi-Final. Although Morwell held sway for most of the day, play was pressured and not of the highest quality. The Tigers led by 11 points, seven points and 14 points at the first three breaks and would have been favoured to hold the Magpies at bay. The breeze favoured Sale in the final quarter and they made the most of the advantage, kicking four goals to none to overrun the Tigers. Defenders Andrew Quirk (Sale) and Michael “Chunky” Duncan (Morwell) were named as their sides’ best players with no-one standing out in the

Traralgon became very short priced favourites for the 1998 flag when they thrashed an in-form Moe side at Maffra in the 2nd Semi-Final. The Maroons dominated from the outset, peppering the goals for a tally of 4.7 to 1.0 at quarter time. An even second term saw a similar lead to Traralgon at half time. After the break Traralgon squeezed Moe to such an extent that just one goal came in the whole second half, through Darron Eastwell at the 16 minute mark of the third term. Meanwhile Traralgon forged ahead, led by ruckman Warren Tresider, Aaron Crosby and Peter Wolfe. Ten players shared the fourteen goals as Traralgon romped to a 65 point victory and a place in the Grand Final. It was a similar margin of victory for Leongatha over Morwell on Sunday at Traralgon, although the path there was somewhat different. Morwell held a slender lead at the first break with goals flowing freely. Morwell kicked five goals in that term, but were kept to just three after that point. Twin forwards Adrian Campbell and Tim Traill were unstoppable, with Campbell kicking ten goals and Traill five of Leongatha’s total of eighteen.

The Eagles and the Parrots have contested no fewer than eight finals in the previous nine years, which includes four major finals matches in the last three years. The teams confounded the tipsters this year in winning on each other’s home ground, Maffra doubling Leongatha’s score in Round 4 this year and then Leongatha replying with a hard fought nine point win in Round 13. Maffra and Leongatha have occupied first and second places on the ladder respectively since Round 9 and recent form suggests that it will take a mighty effort by either Sale or Traralgon to prevent them from being the league’s Grand Finalists for the third year in a row.

Coincidentally, that match was also played at today’s venue, Maffra. Success has been shred in their latest matches with the Maroons winning both clashes last year and Sale taking the points in both home and away matches in 2018. With mothballs for the loser, both teams will treat the expected huge crowd to a spectacular match, the result to be in doubt until the final minutes of the game.

FOOTBALL CLUB
Saturday saw our Reserves travel to Warragul to take on Moe in the Qualifying Final. In miserable conditions and finally with a full list to choose from due to our under 18’s having a break our boys showed they can go deep into this finals campaign with a convincing win over a team that had only lost two games for the year. A very impressive display from a disciplined young team and it was difficult to pick best players from such a great team effort. Sunday the Seniors took on Moe at Morwell in the Elimination Final and in a tight contest, finally broke the shackles at the 11-minute mark of the last quarter to run out 31-point winners. Again, it was a great team effort with no real standouts but worth mentioning the effort of Adam Jaensch down back and Kody Wilson through the mid field. Our Coach Mark Collison also played a terrific game in his first game back after a lengthy spell. This Saturday we welcome all clubs to the Traralgon Rec Reserve for the first ever Gippsland League final under lights. A fantastic initiative by the league to try a night final and hopefully draw a big crowd to watch the two best performed teams of the competition so far this season. Congratulations to AFL Gippsland for thinking outside the square and progressing football with new initiatives in the Gippsland League. Good luck to both our Thirds and Reserves this Saturday, who are playing with the chance of progressing straight to the Grand Final. On Sunday, the seniors travel to Maffra and take on Sale in the first semi. A loss sees the season done for the seniors, but a win will put them through to preliminary final against the loser of the Maffra/ Leongatha game. Sale were well beaten last week and will be keen to bounce back but if our lads can bring their A Grade game, then hopefully we can get over the line. On the netball side our A Grade comfortably defeated a depleted Moe side 57-36 (goals - Taylin Gourley 41, Maddi Stockdale 16) and will take on Morwell. B Grade had the week off and will meet Moe under lights in the 2nd semi-final. C Grade took out the win against Drouin 37-28 (goals Nic Donelan 21, Bridget Kase 16) and will play Maffra this week.
THE MAROONS Under 17s let their game slip in the last quarter to let Maffra come back and equalise in the dying minutes. In overtime, Traralgon came out all guns blazing and scored 18-6 to take out the win (goals Chelsea Livingstone 31, Trax Hanratty 25). They will meet Wonthaggi this week. Unfortunately, our U13s went down to Maffra by 11 goals and are now out of finals. Our four remaining netball teams still have the double chance and are all playing in the 2nd semi-final under lights. Good luck to all teams competing this weekend. Unfortunately, I must end this report on a very sad note. This week our community lost a terrific young man in tragic circumstances. As a member of our club, player, friend but first and foremost a son and brother we offer our condolences to Matt, Katrina, Peter Strong and their extended family on the passing of Jack. Our club and community have been rocked to the core by this sad news and if you or someone you know requires help, please contact Beyond Blue on 1300 22 4636. We need to keep pushing that message out that there is always someone there to listen, you are never alone, and someone always cares #SuicideAwareness.

CLUB NOTES MOE Finals Week 1 After the conclusion of the home and away season, our much anticipated major raffle was drawn, with the major prize winner taking home a brand new Audi. Congratulations to all organisers, particularly Lachlan Sim, who ensured the event injected a large amount of capital to the clubs account. The first week of finals saw a strong representation from Moe teams, with all grades living to fight another day, although unfortunately for some this will mean their another day will have to wait until 2019. Football Seniors In the end it was a match of hard triers against high flyers. Moe were on the cusp of a famous victory after playing their hearts out for three and a half quarters, before Traralgon kicked away with a few junk time scores to secure victory. The Lions were able to hang in the contest with a number of inspiring efforts, but were ultimately beaten by a side that was better on the day. Best players for Moe were Joel Bragagnolo, Grady Cocksedge, James Blaser, Tom Long, Darnel Grech and Tyson Biffin. Reserves Put in a disappointing performance in what was Clint Taylor’s 200th and Peter Yates’ 100th game respectively. In trying conditions, Moe fought hard with limited rotations but ultimately couldn’t find enough fluency across the board. For their efforts in finishing the home and away season in second place, Moe’s loss means they now face a sudden-death Semi Final this Sunday at Maffra. Best players on the day were Tyler Morrow, James Heslop, Calvin and Lucas Fry, Clinton Taylor and Peter Yates. Under 18’s (from Jack Hurst) The match was an arm wrestle that was ultimately decided in the last quarter through a display of genuine team footy. When asked what won them the match, Trent Baldi was quick to reply ‘my goals’. Best players were Pat Bills, Trent Baldi, Josh Galea, Ben Maslen, Kyle Jennings and Sam Lodge. Best wishes to Zac Skinner who is recovering from a serious bout of man-flu. Under 16’s Despite their season coming to an end, the Under 16’s can go into preseason with a degree of confidence in mind, knowing that natural development should see the majority of the down-age players reach a new level. To keep things in perspective, Wonthaggi were in the same boat twelve months ago, and now find themselves going deep into the finals. With all things considered, the clubs youngest brigade have had a commendable season, and all are hopeful their finals experience will serve them well moving forward.

MAJOR RAFFLE First prize $38K Audi! SEE A SENIOR FOOTBALL OR NETBALLER FOR A TICKET $50 a ticket, drawn after the last home game. 5 prizes up for grabs. Netball A Grade (from Peter Moody) The girls came up against a finals hardened outfit and showed us why they’re the reigning premiers. We were only able to match them in patches throughout the game and full credit to Traralgon who played sixty minutes of committed netball and never let up. Our side has learnt a great deal from the game and are determined to not repeat the same errors. Best players were Carly and Georgia. B Grade Won their Qualifying Final and now have a date with Traralgon for a place in the big dance. Moe dominated the contest from the outset, with many contributors across the board to ensure that the Lions are just two wins away from claiming back-to-back titles. C Grade Sometimes you have to wonder what you have done to deserve your fate. For the second time in three seasons, Moe were defeated in a final in extra time. After a seesawing battle, the Lions entered the time on period with the scores all tied up, before Wonthaggi held on in a pulsating finish to break the hearts of all wearing maroon and blue. Under 17’s Just couldn’t find enough winners on the day, despite the best efforts of a vocal crowd. Moe were defeated by a superior team who got the jump on the Lions who were never really able to bridge the gap. Under 15’s Were undone in a thrilling match that kept supporters on edge until the very end. With the best efforts of all involved, Moe played a hard fought game for the right to progress further in the finals, but were unable to creep over the line. Nonetheless, coach Shannon Freeman was proud of the effort of her troops, citing a large improvement in all players as the most rewarding aspect of the season.

The gods smiled and the weather was good last Sunday as we hosted the elimination finals at Morwell Recreation Reserve. Many thanks to the usual band of great club volunteers and players who rolled their sleeves up to make sure we gave the sporting public a well-run and catered spectacle. Of the many volunteers on the day, a special shout-out to Carmel Gniel, Amelia McWilliam and Wendy Morrison who worked the full day ensuring food was plentiful. A big thank you also to Claire and Rachel Allison who despite celebrating their birthday on the day, they volunteered to work most of the day for the club; well done and thanks girls.

FOOTBALL – Brett Sherriff and the U16 team had an impressive win against Moe last weekend at Morwell. Best Players were Tom Caile, Damian Hough, Nathan Noblett, Blake Hughes, EJ Sharp and Zac Carlson. Coach Brett Sherriff was happy with the teamwork and second-efforts and hopes the boys bring the same level of intensity to the game against Wonthaggi. Last start we beat Wonthaggi at Morwell in a dominant last quarter display but the boys know each win has to be earned and we wish the U16 boys well.
Week 2 of the finals has our MFNC teams playing across two venues. The ‘A’ Grade netball play Saturday at Traralgon against Traralgon. Then on Sunday our Under 16 football team and the U17 and ‘B’ Grade netball sides play. NETBALL – ‘A’ Grade play the talented Traralgon girls on their home court. Traralgon beat us there 2 weeks ago but we go in with a fitter side and a different game-plan for this encounter. Good luck to Rachel Allison and the ‘A’ Grade squad. The ‘B’ Grade girls suffered a loss to Moe at Warragul last Saturday but we expect the girls to bounce back this week at Maffra against Warragul. Emily Donoghue, Maddi Hutchison and Shelby Wulffers have all been consistent in recent weeks and the team has the depth to get the job done. U17’s - Firstly, congratulations to coach Gail Macfarlane and her talented U17 squad that had a comfortable win at Morwell last week. Isla McRae was outstanding in defence with great support from Charli Leslie. Jaida Delicato and Maddy Macfarlane were accurate up-forward and feed well by Rahni Styles & Chloe Radford. The bonus was the return of skipper Lucy Bertrand who was in everything. This week the girls play Maffra on their home turf but the girls are all up for the challenge.
SOCIAL – The club Presentation Night is Thursday September 27th at the Morwell Bowling Club. 5:30pm for a 6:00pm start so please save the date and come along and congratulate all our club winners. The live music should make for an enjoyable night for all. SPONSORS - MFNC wish to acknowledge our Platinum and Gold sponsors for season 2018. Our sincere thanks to: Morwell Bowling Club, Willaton Transport, LHS Accounting, Solomon’s Flooring & National Tiles, Techtest, Engie, Heritage Manor and Lend Lease. Finally, good luck to all our participating teams this weekend and GO TIGERS!

CLUB NOTES BAIRNSDALE This week the Redlegs are featuring on Saturday and Sunday. The under 18’s headed to Warragul to take on the mighty Moe Lions, at the close of business the boys went down by a couple of goals. Ando and his lads were pretty disappointed as they had their chances on the day, they battled hard in wet and windy conditions all morning. This week they get another opportunity on Sunday to when they take on Sales U18’s. The boys know where they went wrong last week, their form, structure, effort and discipline got them their finals opportunity, this week if they can apply all those principals they should find themselves preparing for another match week 3 of the finals series! Last Week our under 16’s enjoyed the week off after finishing minor premiers. Dunks and his troops have trained hard over the past 2 weeks and even slotted in an extra session on Fathers Day. The boys take on Sale at Traralgon on Saturday, over the last 8 years the Redlegs 16’s and Magpie 16’s have met many times, they have always been close encounters with a few of them coming down to the final seconds. This week will be no different and should be an exciting game to watch. Fran and her 15 & U netballers were pleased to have proved too strong for Drouin last week coming out winners, 35-28. While it was a tight contest to begin with, the Redlegs were only leading by 1 at the half break. With accurate feeding and goaling, the girls ran away in the final

term to increase the margin and win by 7. Well done to Stella Fitzsimon, Tyla Alvin and Emily Hall who were all key performers in the success. The Redlegs look forward to the challenges that await, meeting rival, Sale, in the 2nd Semi this weekend. Goodluck girls. The Redlegs Youth girls did themselves, their families and the Club proud last week in their Grand Final against Sale City at the Sale Oval. The girls lost by just 5 points on the day in what was a hard fought but low scoring affair. Coach Jess said all the girls have improved this year and are already talking about preseason for 2019. Congratulations to Jess, the Girls and all parents and volunteers on a successful 2018 season. The Girls are holding their Presentation night on the 14th September at the BFNC Club Rooms. The support from our club Woman & Men volunteers is the main ingredient for a successful day, thank you! Challenge Yourself! Come on Redlegs!!!! CLUB NOTES WONTHAGGI Under 16’s, In wet and slippery conditions, our U16’s started well against Sale, scoring the first goal of the game. Sale got one back late in what was an intense first quarter of pressure football, to even things up at the first break. The second saw our boys open the game up, and being able to score freely, in a quality display of free flowing football, to go into the half time in front. The third saw Sale come out on top and although we outscored our opposition in the last quarter, we fell short by the narrowest of

CLUB NOTES WARRAGUL Well done to the many volunteers who worked so hard last Saturday when we and Morwell hosted the first week of finals action in the GL. For us it was off to Morwell for the Elimination Final last week after our senior footy side bowed out the week earlier. It was a chance for our Reserves footballers and two Netball grades to fly the flag for the Gulls after a year of much improvement for us across the board. Well done to Morwell for the way in which they hosted the day. The ground was in super condition. It was a daunting task coming up against the Parrots who have great depth again and clearly manage their players well. Our blokes were never really in the contest against a well disciplined and drilled footy side like Leongatha despite us having a good list to choose from. Scratcha McIntosh has coached our lads well during the year and over his 3 year tenure and was clearly disappointed on the day but also proud of the improvement in his side. The first quarter was a bit of a feeling out process from both sides but the Parrots stretched their wings in the second and romped away to a 4 goal advantage at the main break. The Gulls made some positional changes to put a stop to that but to no avail. Seven second half goals to one sealed the deal for Leongatha who ran out 61 points the better and thoroughly deserved their position in the next round. We had some excellent contributors on the day with a couple of evergreens in Nic Edney and Doc Larkin showing the way. Ben Mackie and Wil Cole
38
worked hard in heavy traffic with Sam Whibley having a great duel with Rumpy and doing a fine job. From a 2019 footy season perspective, most of the Gulls personnel have re committed and looking forward to pre season under a new coach. Our A and B grade netballers also did battle and both were entertaining and close games. Our A grade side fell just short of the mark against the dominant Hawks who they accounted for earlier in the season. Our B grade had a great win against Wonthaggi and do battle again today at Maffra. We wish them well along with all grades of footy and netball over this weekend. Best wishes to the host clubs and GO GULLS.

CLUB NOTES LEONGATHA The first week of the finals produced some excellent results for our participating teams. Although the weather was shocking, we still had plenty of support at both Warragul and Morwell on Saturday and Sunday respectively. The U13 netballers had the honour of kicking off our 2018 finals campaign, and they did not disappoint. Taking on Wonthaggi it was expected to be a tough game for the Parrots. It turned out exactly that way, with a 2-goal margin at the end with Wonthaggi pushing us hard at the end. The girls came out of the blocks really well early with the coaching staff really pleased with the intensity and effort. They really did set up the win early on which they will need to replicate that form today as they take on Sale. Over at the Leongatha Association courts the U13 Budgies played in the grand final coming away with a fantastic win. Congratulations to all involved in the junior netball program on another fine season. It was then the Senior’s turn as they took on Sale in deteriorating conditions. It seemed to be a repeat of the last round of the year with Sale certainly playing with intensity early and making our boys work hard. But then the Parrots lifted a cog and started to get on top in the critical contests. We were cleaner with the ball in the conditions and we were playing with better system. We had winners on all lines and played out the game with an intensity that would have really pleased the coach. Hopefully we will be able to replicate that today as we take on the league leaders in Maffra. On Sunday it was the U18s that kicked us off but unfortunately they started very slowly and that allowed Sale to be well on top by half time. The boys lifted after half time and the momentum in the
game started to swing our way. Where the scoring for Sale early in the game came freely it was much more of a slog for us as the game went on. The rain came in and made it just that much harder for us to get any momentum on the scoreboard. The lads did fight it out all the way to the final siren and can be enormously proud of their efforts. The Reserves then took centre stage against opponents Warragul. The Gulls got the first major of the game and were giving our lads the run around. The boys then started to wrestle back control of the contest. By quarter time momentum had shifted our way but we just had not made the opposition pay on the scoreboard. The Parrots continued to improve as the game went on with many end to end passages of play resulting in scoring opportunities. Hopefully we can take that form into the game today and give a great account of ourselves. Go Parrots!

With another road trip last weekend that made two weekends in a row, the senior boys’ game couldn’t of played in more contrasting weather. One week sunny and minimum wind, last week in Warragul it was windy and raining all game. The boys both weeks unfortunately came up against a strong and well drilled Leongatha both weekends and the score didn’t go our way. With stand in Captain Jordan ‘Jumbotron’ Dessent trying his best and battling all day, he was again a standout performer. The game was a slog for 4 quarters in the wet and our boys were caught off guard form the get go, they showed plenty of fight but ended the game going down 2.11-23 to Leongatha 14.10-94. Best- Jumbo, Kyle ‘Young Pup’ Dunkley, Nic ‘Bulldog’ Dowse, Andrew ‘Q-Tip’ Quirk, Jack ‘Syrup’ Mapleson and Brad ‘Braddles’ McKay. The Reserves have started their pre-season training early and are looking the goods for the 2019 season. The U18’s played a do or die match last Sunday and like the senior boys they faced Leongatha at Morwell Rec Reserve for a second week in a row. The young bucks were ready to go for a Sunday game and jumped out the blocks early. With a 52-15 first half, the crowd might have thought the game was done but credit to the ‘Gatha team who pushed our boys all the way to the final siren. Well done to the thirds who live to fight again this week, goodluck fellas. Final Scores Sale 10.7-67 to 9.4-58. The boys didn’t come awake to play though and was less the half Wonthaggi’s score at halftime. But with a rev up at the halfway break the scores soon turned and with a 4 goal to none 3rd quarter, it set up a great last quarter shootout between the teams. With the teams again split this weekend over both days we wish all the best to Berni and our U13 netballers, Tori and our U15 Netballers, and our U16 Footballers who play Saturday at Traralgon. Then in Maffra on Sunday we say all the best to our U18 and Senior Football Teams as they face sudden death matches. Good luck to all our teams today!! GO PIES

CLUB NOTES MAFFRA We have all three junior netball sides playing in semi-finals at home this weekend – an impressive feat for any club. Our under 17s had a crippling 12-goal loss to Traralgon, after a stalemate on 39-39 at the final whistle led to extra time. Despite horrendous conditions, our defence applied intense pressure and transitioned well, allowing us to capitalise on any mistakes. Cracks began to show during extra time, as the Maroons’ impressive defence forced costly mistakes. Best-on-court were Abbey Pleydell, who shot with pristine accuracy under pressure, and Maddie Davis who pushed out five quarters in centre. Today, the girls have a second chance against elimination final winner Morwell, and will look forward to the return of Emma Allman to the side.

win and keep their finals hopes alive. Whilst both teams would concede it was not their best netball, the pressure was intense throughout, which made the game a great spectacle. Defensive pressure was optimum from both teams with Drouin’s circle defenders Nikki Bryce and Ebony Mumford superb, regularly sending Drouin back into attack. Their work rate was outstanding, keeping Drouin in the contest. Players in the midcourt were under relentless attack as the ball went from end to end often without reward. The final quarter was extremely tight and Drouin held their nerve to score a narrow but satisfying victory. Drouin will

However, this was difficult in the cold, slippery conditions which had a significant impact on timing. Ella Gown and Lucy McKellar got some great intercepts and deflections in the goal circle.
