LEAGUE WELCOME ROUND 2 UPDATE Welcome to round 2 and our first full weekend of

action. It seems a while ago that the season kicked off with our two Good Friday games. This weekend

we have the first of our night fixtures for 2018 when

Traralgon host reigning senior premier Leongatha.

The Maroons are coming off a strong win against a highly fancied Bairnsdale side which should make

for a great game. A reminder that any local club

member can gain complimentary entry to the night

fixture upon presentation of their membership card so if you are free it will be well worth a look. It’s a

great initiative by Traralgon that will hopefully help

add to what should be a big crowd on the night to

showcase premier football and netball in the area.

Interleague and Association Championships are just over a month away. The League will start sending out more information for these two events in the

coming weeks. At this stage we are still looking for

netball coaches to put their hands up for the May

20th tournament.

Best of luck to all teams this weekend.

Round 2 – Saturday 14th April

TRARALGON V LEONGATHA

PAST ROUND 2's By Paul Carter

20TH APRIL, 2013

Bairnsdale’s stunning win over Maffra highlighted the second round of 2013. Down by twenty points at the first break, the Redlegs played what was termed “grunt football” to claw their way back into the match, just one point behind at the half way mark. Luke Dyer was winning in the middle and Mark Sellings providing a good forward target as they attacked relentlessly during the third quarter, adding a somewhat wasteful 3.7 to Maffra’s 2.2 to lead by ten points as the teams changed for the final quarter. Both teams added three goals for a final nine point margin in Bairnsdale’s favour in front of over 1200 fans. Inaccuracy cost Drouin early in their game against Moe, but they came home with six goals to win by 22 points, Brod Fraser and David Olsen leading the way for the Hawks and James Blaser standing out for the Lions. Youngster Declan Keilty kicked six goals for Moe. Warragul’s inaccuracy in front of goal cost it dearly against Morwell, the teams having a similar number of scoring shots, but the Tigers winning by more than forty points. Wonthaggi won a nail-biter at Traralgon, the Power holding on to win by two points. The Maroons had chances late in the game to snatch the points, but couldn’t capitalise, Traralgon sitting winless in ninth position on the ladder. Sale had thirty shots at goal to Leongatha’s eleven, but it wasn’t until the final quarter when they came home with six of their ten goals that the outcome was put beyond doubt.

Moe remained on top of the WGLFL ladder after an impressive display against close neighbour Morwell. Morwell had overcome an early deficit to head Moe by four points at half time and had the momentum of the

game running their way as the second half got under way. The Lions, with the speedy Stuart Robertson showing out across half forward, kicked five goals to two to take the lead back, then came home with another six goals to win by 32 points. Andrew Petrou stood out for Morwell with six goals. Maffra bounced back from their opening round loss to Sale with a strong showing against Leongatha, leading from start to finish. Hayden Burgiel was busy all over the ground, well supported by Jed Costigan and Ben Coleman. Chris Whelan kicked four goals for the Parrots. Seven second quarter goals by Traralgon against Drouin proved crucial in the Maroons winning by 47 points, while Warragul overcame an early deficit against Garfield to run away with the game by forty points. Matt Gray was inspirational for Warragul with Nathan Lieshout and Nick Edney in strong support. Sale had the bye.

20 YEARS AGO … 25TH/26TH APRIL, 1998

Moe broke its 32 game losing sequence in style when it met Bairnsdale at Summerton Reserve. The Lions had gone winless through the 1996 and 1997 seasons, but they belted the Redlegs with their biggest win over Bairnsdale and their second highest ever score against them. Troy Makepeace led the way with Dean Caldow and Shane Jarvis unstoppable up forward. It was a similar story at Morwell for the Saturday night game where Traralgon forwards Grantley Switzer and Tony Lane combined for eleven of Traralgon’s 21 goals, Greg Morley and Martin Cameron playing stand-out games for the winners. Leongatha’s six goal second quarter broke open their game against Maffra. “Billy” Clarke combined well with Craig McGannon and Alastair Scott as the Parrots ran away with the game. On Sunday fans were treated to a thriller at Wonthaggi where the home side was forced to come from behind at the final break. Trailing by seven points, the Blues kicked 5.5 to a goal to overrun Sale. Strong defence from Emile Studham and Adam Mabilia paved the way, blustery conditions marring the overall standard of the game. Warragul had the bye.

Little separated 23RD APRIL, 1988 them all day and the Parrots led by just one point at three quarter time. Ever the innovators, the LVFL staged a Friday night game at Traralgon Billy King starred on the wing for the Redlegs and Chris McRae was in front of a crowd almost twice the size of any other from that round. Scores were close early, before Traralgon edged Moe in each of the final named as best for Leongatha. Morwell and Sale were both off target at Morwell, the Tigers managing to win by 43 points. Stephen Allison was three quarters, the Maroons’ margin going from 3 points to 19 to 25 to best afield with Jim Rasmussen kicking five goals for the winners, while a final advantage of 30 points. Peter Black stood out for Traralgon with Ian “Emu” Jones was Sale’s best. Yallourn/Yallourn North had the bye. Allan Jennings chiming in with five goals. Two years ago the Hawks stunned the Eagles with a seven goal to one final term, Drouin coming from two goals down at the final change to win by 25 points. The lessons learned from Round 1 are that Drouin is on the improve, and that Maffra is again going to be one of the league’s leaders in 2018. The Hawks stunned the Eagles here in 2016, and this season looms as one of the more even in recent years.

The margins of games played from the latter half of 2015 have been 7, 21, 3, 15 and

20

21 points, an average of just 13.4 points per game. In all of these games the Redlegs have been very much in contention late into the match. Bairnsdale today has the chance to win for just its 12th time at the Morwell Recreation Reserve, and its first win over the Tigers since late 2013.

Moe hasn’t won at Sale since 2002, the “curse” costing them the invaluable third place on the ladder last year when they visited “The Nest” hot favourites to beat the eighth placed Magpies. Moe trailed by just two points at the half time break, but it all fell apart for the Lions as Sale piled on nine third quarter goals to take a stranglehold on the game.

2018 TRFM GIPPSLAND LEAGUE RECORD

ROUND 2 STATISTICS By Paul Carter (1997) Most goals (match) : Wonthaggi 7 R.Tack (1999) Warragul 7 M.Cumming (1997) Notes : With a win apiece last year, both home teams having victories, the overall ledger between the Power and the Gulls remains even with 13 wins each from their 26 meetings. Both games in 2017 followed a similar “script” with tight, low scoring starts before the home team edged to a half time lead and went on to a comfortable win. Both teams have their sights set on finals football this year and today’s game, even at this early stage of the year, could have a bearing on their respective fortunes when the dust settles after Round 18.

The Maroons and Parrots have met at Traralgon ten times since 2010 with the Parrots winning seven and Traralgon three. Leongatha’s wins have also been by an average winning margin of 32 points. Traralgon won their home ground clash against Parrots last year with some remarkably accurate kicking for goal on a windy, wet day. With eighteen scoring shots apiece, Traralgon’s 15.3 gained them a thirty point win.

TRARALGON FOOTBALL NETBALL CLUB: Well round 1 is done and dusted and our club travelled to Bairnsdale for a twilight game on a magnificent autumn day. On the football side our Under 16’s got the day off to a great start with a very fast and skilful game of footy with our boys going down by 4 points. Best players on the day were Jayson Musgrove, Louis D’Angelo, Ryan Wilson, Kade Ruyters, Riley Adams and Darion Duncan. The Under 18’s were next up and being the reigning premiers new that Bairnsdale were primed for this game. Again it was fast paced and something had to give meaning our lads lost by 13 points. Best players were Isaac Copeland, Luke Johnson, Lucas Tripodi, Peter Strong, Cohen Ruyters and Beau White who played his first game in 12 months coming back from an ACL. The main game for the day started at 4:30pm and our boys were keen to put on a good showing. Bairnsdale were not far off the mark last season and have recruited well so we knew we had to start well. With quite a few of our regular senior players out we fielded a very young and reasonably inexperienced side and the lads did a terrific job coming away with a 16 point win. Well done to our three debutants in Kody Wilson, Matt Williams and Ewan Williams. Best players were Conor Ambler (P&D Rigging award), Mitch Mustoe, Nic Quenault, Conor Little along with Darren White, Jackson Hall and our coach Mark Collison. We now focus our attention to the reigning premiers in Leongatha who we play at the Traralgon Rec Reserve under lights this Saturday. Come along and enjoy some great local community footy. Senior game starts at 6:30pm. Congratulations to Jake Vucenovic lining up for his 50th senior game today. The netballers had 5 wins against Bairnsdale despite our senior sides having multiple players

THE MAROONS unavailable. We are lucky to have such depth in our juniors to fill these spots. CLUB NOTES LEONGATHA Round 1s home game against Wonthaggi on Good Friday was a great success. With the beautiful autumn weather shining on us we had a big gate on the day. The raising of premiership flags for the senior football and C grade netball went off without a hitch. It was so good to see Beau Vernon and his family come back to celebrate this wonderful milestone. The star of the show was certainly Elaine Olle who raised the flags. Elaine has showed an unwavering support for the club since 1970. She was so chuffed to be part of the ceremony. We would also like to acknowledge the Wonthaggi FNC for allowing us the time pre-game for our celebrations. The competition on the day was fantastic with close, hard fought games across all games in the netball and football. It’s great to have such a big rivalry with our closest competitors, especially with so many games being in the balance until late in the game. The day saw many young players making their mark in netball and football, a great sign for the club going forward. We would also like to thank all the lads who came in and played in the U18s to help us out. Your efforts are much appreciated. This week’s game sees the focus turn to Traralgon who have long been the testing material in our league. The prospect of playing under the new lights at Traralgon is very exciting. With many clubs upgrading their facilities it would seem that we will see more night games in the future!

26

Good luck today everyone and put your best foot forward!

Social News Our annual ball will be held after the Rd3 game against Morwell on the 21st April. Tickets available from Rob van Rooy. On May 12th we are hosting The Big Celebrity Sports night. CLUB NOTES WONTHAGGI We were looked forward to Round 1 for the last 6 months. Our Footballers and Netballers were ready to go. U16’s Football, we had high expectations after a long and hard pre-season. Our opening round didn’t disappoint, with a great win away from home. Darren was very pleased with the implementation of our game plan. U18’s Football, The boys started slowly, and where behind all day. But to their credit they hung around all game and constantly peppered the goals. But with too many point kicked, we fell away to a 7 point loss. Reserves Football. With the start of a new season, we were confident of a good start against a perennial finals contender. What a great first half, But. we unfortunately we fell away in the 2nd half. With players being available to play after cricket, we are looking forward to bright season. Seniors Football. With the import of 6 new players this year, the club was confident of a positive start to the year. We came up against a formidable opponent this round. We could only do what we could, the home team was clearly better on the day at shutting down our movements forward. Injuries and unavailability didn’t help either. A Grade, We were looking forward to taking on our arch rivals in Leongatha. And word was out, it would be an evenly matched game. Both sides began to struggle for momentum.

It was a low scoring game, and at the buzzer, we were down by 2. We look forward to playing Warragul at home today. B Grade, New and old players combined really well for our first match, Both teams were within a goal or two all day. It was a high scoring game with the result being 58 each. Well done to all, and we will get stronger. C Grade, With a new team taking to the courts, we came away with a good win, and some positives as well. A great win girls. U17’s, What an amazing way to start our season with a nail biting 2 pt win. Let’s keeping going, and achieve our best each week. U13’s Great start to the season by all players contributing to a strong win. Great intensity and enthusiasm by our young charges. Also thanks to the cheer squad. "GO POWER, YOU BLOODY BEAUTY"

CLUB NOTES WARRAGUL The Gulls welcomed the Morwell Tigers to Western Park on Good Friday to kick off the 2018 season. It was a scrappy affair early with players from both sides struggling to get clean possession of the footy. Warragul put in a strong second quarter effort which resulted in 8 goals which probably won the game for them but it was an even contest for the rest of the game. A win first up is always a great way to start the season and it also uncovered some new talent from the Gulls ranks who will only improve in the weeks to come. That together with the inclusions of Muir, Fowler and Coombes in the coming weeks will see some entertaining footy going forward. Jake Horstman ( Warragul Downtowner award ) dominated the centre bounces and was prominent around the ground all day. Kim Drew ( Railway Hotel ) showed his class as well racking up heaps of quality possessions. Nate Paredes ( Frankies award) oozes talent and showed that in another superb game coming off a super NTFL season with St. Marys. Our backmen didn’t have a very busy day but Matt Rennie ( Wild Dog Pizza ) is happier than a butchers dog in his role there. He has real leadership skills and is a springboard into attack. That suits Luke Di Ciero perfectly who enjoyed his 3 goals slotting in very well after his switch from the Maroons. He’s off to Voyage Fitness and thanks to them and all of the award donors. The reserves also got off to a flyer against the traditionally strong Tigers. Solid recruiting has added much needed depth to our playing stocks. Congratulations to the popular Jamie “ Daryl” Somers on being appointed Captain. He’s a ripping young man who’s a pleasure to have at our club. And to top it off he’s deadly around the goals helping himself to 4 majors first game in. Sam Whibley came over from Garfield this year and made his mark early with a best afield performance in round one. Leigh Sheehan is a very handy bloke

30

to have running around in the twos and his skill and experience will only assist those around him. Josh Fairfull will enjoy his Waterwise award after a good display and Jamie Somers and Harley Nobelius can compare recipes from Maloneys Pizza and Wild Dog Pizza. Our under 18s enjoyed a big win over a very depleted Morwell side. Mason McGarrity ( Warraview Joinery ) was our best with Ryley Green not far behind him. Braxton Ahmat has great skills and Will Gown played very well. Rhys Chambers and Paddy Mulqueen rounded out the awards. Our under 16s were very much bottom age and will improve as the season progresses. Morwell were a bit too good on the day. Jai Serong, Beau Cusden, Connor Ives, Corey Maric and Micah Williames were the award winners. Our netballers have also recruited well but will take time to gel as a unit. Most games were good contests with our C grade recording a nice round one victory. This week we’re off to Wonthaggi to short circuit the Power after the split round. Safe travelling and good luck to all. GO GULLS.

CLUB NOTES MOE Round 1 vs Drouin A picturesque day greeted all at Ted Summerton Reserve last Saturday, as the club opened its 2018 season in promising fashion. Congratulations to all our debutants, we hope this is the start of a great journey for each of you. Seniors Ran away with the game after quarter time to go from strength to strength across the remaining three quarters. A dominant team effort was pleasing to see for all supporters as our lads displayed their skills and footballing nous. Best players were Josh Pearce with four goals, the golden fist Charlie Rieniets, Jacob Wood, Tom Fleming, Darnell Grech and Joel Bragagnolo. Reserves Secured a moral victory with many contributors but still plenty of room for improvement. After an even first half the Lions were able to break away in the second to run out 48 point winners, with only errant kicking in front of goal including three consecutive posters costing the side a greater margin. The younger brigade led the way at stoppages, extracting plenty of possessions and linking up well. Josh Wilson, Matt Pearce, Aaron Wilson and Luke Carrodous excelled in this department, whilst the experienced duo of John Chessells and Clinton Taylor rounded out the best players. Under 18’s It was rotations galore in an extremely one-sided contest, with the game virtually over in the first ten minutes. The Lions kept the goal umpires busy with eleven individual goal kickers, with Caleb Michie sending through eight and Grady Cocksedge four. Others to perform well were Zac Skinner, Josh Galea, Jack Robinson and Harry Pepper. Under 16’s Gave Skins his first win as coach in a pretty tight game that the Lions were able to compose themselves for in the finish to win by twenty points. Drouin fought back admirably but were unable to bridge the gap. Matthew was a popular name amongst the best players with Matt Devon, Matt Neal and Matt Heywood all featuring. Whilst Aydan ‘next Ricky Ponting’ Connolly, Taijh Eden and Brandon Watson also performed well. Netball A Grade A sea-sawing event that unfortunately netted a devastating one goal loss to Moe. However, keeping in perspective that three players from B Grade had to play twice and that our A Grade Captain didn’t play there should be plenty of

Best players were Elise Sim and Emily McInnes. B Grade Got their premiership defence off to a good start, holding off Drouin to win 55 to 41. After an even first half Moe asserted their dominance on the game to secure the four points. Best players were Rachel Shaw and the semiretired Haley Taylor. C Grade Were ultimately let down in the all-important premiership quarter, in which Drouin were able to break away and create an annoying buffer. Final scores were Moe 28 to Drouin 39. Best players were Bree Phoenix and Elly Brown. Under 17’s Won a tightly fought contest 44 to 39 to get their season off on the right foot. Best players were Maddie Bond and Elyse Gordon. Under 15’s Were also victors in a tight match, eventually winning 36 to 31. Best players on the day were Lily Campbell and Laini Galea. Under 13’s Were the clubs first winners for the season, smashing all who came into their path to win 40 to 14. Best players were Olivia Rock and Hayley Koot.

Our Club person of the week is Chris Soumilas , our President , who has done heaps of work over the off season to improve our club. We are hoping for another positive performance today against Maffra.

A Grade: Tough first match against Moe, the game going right down the wire. It was a very evenly matched contest across the whole court which resulted in very tight, physical, and high-pressure match. Ebony Mumford was fantastic in her return game for Drouin B Grade: There are a lot of new combinations in B grade team this season. Even with a loss there were plenty of positives to be taken from the game against Moe. Chelsea DeRiter & Lia Olsen were Drouin’s Best.

C Grade: What a way to start the season with a close match and an impressive win. A great 4 Quarter effort by all players. Kate McArthur was Drouin’s best with an impressive performance in the centre.

17 & Under: Great first game for the season. Drouin showed a lot of promise and heart with a massive effort in the last quarter out scoring Moe 12 to 6. Congratulations to Prue Cavanagh, Amy Bertacco & Kristen Groenewaldt on their debut games. Award winners Alan Rippon & Ally Leishout. 15 & Under: What a great first game for a talented bunch of girls. Moe provided a strong contest and the Drouin girls unfortunately ran out of legs in the end. Ella East was Drouin’s award winner with a very strong consistent game in Centre. 13 & Under: Fantastic start to the season by the girls who showed a big improvement on last year. Holly Cheyne and Allanah Jagoe both had great debuts. Charli Hendrikse was award best for Drouin. CLUB NOTES MAFFRA Over summer the club was a major focus of a magazine featuring Maffra - a beautiful town by local business ‘Gippsland the lifestyle.’ If a supporter wants a copy contact “thelifestylemagazine.com.au' Editor Doug Pell was an unattached spectator at the Grand Final, the first experienced by him and he came away besotted by the contest. "This Grand Final had the lot and Maffra were a considerable amount behind at first break, but they fought back and nearly won, as the nervous faces in the Leongatha crowd were testament to this. Wayne's coaching was magnificent, his players walked through the wall for him, they literally crawled to the finish line ---- when it was time for Wayne to give his speech he was magnanimous in his praise for Leongatha Premiership Coach Beau Vernon and for his own players." In Doug’s opinion 'this is what should be broadcast by the AFL industry to portray how competitive sport should be honoured - the respect shown between each club - on and off field, players and supporters - for the spirit of the game was totally inspirational." Our U17 girls continued their outstanding run of premierships - we are in the presence of some champions - no doubt. Completing an outstanding first year under a new administration was our presentation night in the Memorial Hall, for the first time since our new clubrooms were built. This was an inspired move by the committee, bought to light by Pam McGrath's life membership presentation when her beloved Ressies initiated a standing ovation of every member - and the other twenty life members present. This was/is a celebration that our town can now share. For this year our football list has just grown a year older to my knowledge - with the power to add but the changes on the netball court are significant. The strength of family connection always has been

38

Maffra's strength May, Lestrange, Donnelly, Gray, Gieschen, Shingles - history still represented now. Others have been attracted by the character of our administrators, some of whom were champion players of the club Pleydell, Hill, Linaker, Alvin, Vardy, Gravener and they too have contributed to the bloodlines. Not to forget the Butcher contribution - So on to 2018. Sadly the summer also saw the passing of Marg Jacobs the loving partner of Ray. Together they have made considerable contributions to the Maffra Football Netball club - through good times and bad. Vale Marg. Major sponsor Wayne Ferguson has made another contribution to our venue's amenity with an elevated media box. 2018 sponsorship and memberships are now available from the office, please see Jo or Belinda. On to this weeks game and the history between Maffra and Sale - long may it reign We could really do with some at the moment. An exciting season awaits. We are the mighty Maffra Eagles we are the good old Red and Blacks.

MORWELL FOOTBALL NETBALL CLUB Our Netball team results were the biggest positive from Round 1. Despite a number of personnel changes all the girls adapted very quickly. We had good wins in all age groups except ‘C’ Grade but we know that they will deliver far more upside as the season progresses. Daisy Hill and Claire Allison dominated under the A Grade ring with 31 and 30 goals respectively. Awards for the netball games were as follows:- Daisy Hill & Casey Sherriff (A Grade), Shelby Wulffers & Ellie Pollutro (B), Isabelle Kennedy & Rahni Styles (C), Jaida Delicato, Maddy Macfarlane & Chloe Radford (U17), Ashlyn Pavey, Macie Leslie & Mikayla Couling (U15), Olivia Fourlze, Taylah Pavey & Emma Darling (U13). Also best wishes to Kristy Leslie (C Grade) who suffered a serious injury. In Football, Brett’s Fourths were great with a strong 42-point victory where Tom Caile & Brodie Deering were named best and Josh Monacella kicked 3 goals. Jock’s thirds team battled hard all day but had no answers for the gulls. Shane Berzese & Cameron Juhasz were our best. Funky Duncan and his 2nd’s side were undermanned but made the gulls earn
