WARRAGUL V MOE 200TH GAME The 1974 Latrobe Valley Football League grand final between Warragul and Moe lives long in the memory of all those that witnessed it and few more so than participants Bob Baldry and Gus Eaton. The two clubs face off for the 200th time this weekend and four-goal hero Baldry vividly recalls the final moments of arguably their most famous meeting. “I can still remember when the siren went who had the ball and it was Gussy Easton,” Baldry said. “He was running towards goal and I was trying to catch him and he was getting further away
from me with every step and then then siren went. Another 10 seconds and who knows what might have happened.” The Gulls held on to win by four points and claim their first premiership since the formation of the LVFL in 1954. For the Lions, it marked a fourth grand final defeat in five years, taking the edge off what was otherwise a strong era for the club, kicked off by the 1967 premiership. Eaton, whose 339 games stood as the club record prior to Peter Ainsworth eclipsing that mark last year, admits he had ‘tunnel vision’ when it came to match day and remembered few details of on-field action, but has never forgotten the near misses. “I played in 1970 when we got done by Leongatha… in ‘72 we got done by Traralgon by a point, then in ‘73 by Sale by a point and then there was 74,” Eaton said. “When I came to the club in 1961 we played in the finals nearly every year from there to 1979 so I was pretty lucky in that way.” Warragul went onto win another premiership in 1976 in Baldry’s final game at the club. It was truly a golden age, with Baldry playing alongside the likes of Barry Round and Alan Noonan, while Eaton counting Barry Rowlings and Ian Jennings among his high-profile teammates at Moe during that time.

WARRAGUL V MOE 200TH GAME Since their first meeting in the Central Gippsland Football Association on 16th June, 1909, Warragul and Moe have met 199 times in organized league football. Prior to this date they may have met in mutually arranged games or games for Challenge Cups, but the reporting of any such games, if any, was unreliable. Warragul won that original match 7.8.50 to Moe 4.6.30, the game played on Warragul’s home game. The expected return match didn’t happen as the game at Moe was cancelled due to the poor state of the Moe ground. In 1910 the CGFA split into Eastern and Western Division, with the top two teams of each division playing in the finals series; the teams weren’t in the same division and Moe finished third in the Eastern division. They played twice in 1911, the home team winning, before Moe decided to return to a more local competition. Moe returned to the CGFA in 1915, the teams meeting just once for a Moe win in a disappointing season for both clubs. After World War One competition resumed in 1919, Moe rejoining the CGFA in 1920 and continuing until 1953 when the then-named CGFL was dissolved. Warragul was a powerful club, playing in 16 CGFA / CGFL Grand Finals, while Moe rode more of a rollercoaster with good years mixed with poor ones. They met in just three finals matches in this competition, the first being the 1930 1st Semi-Final, played at Yallourn. The Gulls led from start to finish to win by 44 points, legendary forward Horrie Farmer kicking six of Warragul’s sixteen goals. Their other two CGFL Finals matches were in 1938, a marathon season of 22 Home and
Away rounds, with the Grand Final played on 15th October. Warragul won its 1st Semi match against Leongatha (Farmer 5 goals), then advanced to the Preliminary Final against Moe. A see-sawing match saw them separated by just one point at the final break. In what must have been a torrid final quarter, just three behinds were scored, one to Warragul and two to Moe to see them locked at 9.10.64 apiece as the final siren sounded. Warragul won the Replay, kicking ten goals to one after a closely fought first half. Warragul, which had come from fourth place on the ladder, stormed to a huge premiership win over the strong Morwell side. in a winless season in 1970, Warragul, under coach Graeme Gahan, became one of the power sides in the LVFL in the 1970s and
1980s. In 1974 and 1976 they topped the
ladder and won premierships, the 1974 flag being won over the luckless Moe side. The
1974 loss was Moe’s fourth Grand Final defeat in five years, all by narrow margins. They

Warragul holding on to win by four points. The Gulls were best served that day by Graeme
Cook, Malcolm Birch and big John Gallus, Bob Baldry kicking four goals and Cook two. Moe’s best was defender Reno Fusinato, Terry Staff
and Brian “Doc” Rowlings with Greg Wheildon
their only multiple goalkicker with three. The Gulls and Lions have played many
memorable games in this league, no fewer
than 31 matches decided by two goals or less.
Their only other finals meeting since that 1974
Grand Final was twenty years later in the 1994
1st Semi-Final, played at Traralgon and won by Moe. With the improvement already obvious in both camps this year, it certainly won’t be long before we again see Warragul and Moe battle
out a major final.

WARRAGUL V MOE
PAST ROUND 3's By Paul Carter
5 YEARS AGO … 27TH APRIL, 2013 A nine goal second quarter set Morwell on its way to a huge win over Moe. Daniel Hutchison’s eight goals led the way for the Tigers who took over the top spot on the ladder from Sale. For their part, Sale had a hard earned win at Wonthaggi. The Magpies led by a solitary point going in to the last quarter, Chris Laverty and Kane Martin playing strongly in the midfield as Sale emerged with an eighteen point win. Bairnsdale, with Mark Sellings on target with eight goals, was too strong at home against Drouin. Darren Sheen’s six goal haul led Maffra to a good win over Leongatha, Cade Maskell contributed five goals for the Parrots. Ryan Murphy and Jackson Hall combined for twelve of Traralgon’s 23 goals as the Maroons built a ten goal half time lead, extending that to an 82 point margin by the final siren. Warragul’s best was current Traralgon coach Mark Collison.

Leading by twenty points at the final change, Drouin wasn’t able to maintain the pressure as the Redlegs stormed home to take a ten point victory back east with them. It was, however, a sign of the improvement the Hawks made during a winless year. Two years ago Drouin ran Bairnsdale to a five point margin on the City Oval, the scene of today’s match. The Hawks will be sure to make Bairnsdale work hard for every score this afternoon.
all by comfortable margins of 31 points or more. On their home turf the Parrots have won five of the last seven meetings with the Tigers, Morwell’s wins coming in their back-to-back premiership years of 2013-14. The Parrots look to be one of the teams to beat in 2018, while Morwell will rebuild, giving some of their promising youngsters valuable game time.

Although the Traralgon Recreation Reserve is a place where visiting teams find the going tough, Sale has won there nine times since 2003. Recent games between them have been real crowd pleasers with plenty of goals being scored. In their last four meetings the winning score has been 114 points or better. Traralgon seemed to have covered their losses quite well, as they have done in the past, while Sale has welcomed back into the fold several players, some from injury and some returning to the club. This will be another top class match with the result in doubt until late in the game.

FOOTBALL CLUB
Last week saw us take on the 2017 Premiers under our new lights for the first Gippsland League night game at our ground in many years. With the youngest Senior team we have put on the park for a couple of seasons the boys handled themselves well and got the job done by 31 points. The real upside out of this game was the 9 lads 19 years old or younger and especially the way young Harvey Neocleous played as a 16-year-old was terrific to witness. All these lads have a very bright future and we look forward to watching them grow as footballers and community members of our club. Better players on the day were Hayden Hector, Cory Stockdale, Mitch Mustoe, Jackson McMahon, Kody Wilson and Michael Jacobsen. Our reserves took to the field with the bare 18 players due to 11 players missing from our senior team for various reasons. With support of 4 of our under 18’s doubling up, again a very young team performed well and showed they will be in the mix at seasons end. This game was played in very ordinary conditions and Leongatha with their bigger bodies got the job done by 27 points. Better players were Bobby Marshall, Jack Strong, Rick Battista, Blake Aurish and Lachy McDonald. This was our first game as a group so watch this space as there is plenty to like about this group. Most will play senior footy throughout the year. The thirds played in possibly the worst conditions for the day and put on a dominant display of skilful footy winning by 22 points. Both sides battled away in wet, cold and slippery conditions with the ball played mainly between the half back lines with only 7 goals kicked for the game. Best players were Luke Johnson, Isaac Copeland, 2 meter Peter Strong, Lucas Tripodi, Ben Cheetham and Tom McMahon. Our under 16’s started the day off and after coming close the previous week against Bairnsdale, they were keen to make amends against a talented Leongatha side. At ¾ time the score was 4 points in Leongatha’s favour and our boys were on the charge, but the parrots put paid to our efforts kicking 2 goals 3 points to our 1 point in the last quarter to set up a 18 point win. A good effort by our lads with best players being Louis D’Angelo, Harry Middleton, Jayson Musgrove, and Chance Doultree. With many of our netball teams still missing players, we managed to pull of 5 wins against Leongatha. Our Under 13s had 4 players away at Basketball Vic Country Champs but with four fantastic fill-ins from Traralgon Netball Association, Faith Farmer, Michaela Geary, Indy Van Berkel and Ruby Adams, they still pulled off a convincing win. In A Grade, Taylin Gourley was back for her first full game and
THE MAROONS shot and astounding 66 goals! We would also like to thank our umpires who do an outstanding job each week – Bridget Kase (also Umpire Coordinator), Sophie Membrey, Claire Thomas, Tiffany Boatman & Lily Van Berkel. We also have some U15 players who will begin their umpire training soon – we can’t wait to see them in action. Jnr “Coaches” Awards: U13 – Faith Farmer, Dempsey Blair & Emily Neocleous, U15 – Charlotte Di Toro, Amity Blair & Alannah Webster, U17 – Milan Maaka, Amy Husson & Heidi Gaudion. Snr Awards: C Grade – Tiffany Boatman, Nic Donelan & Bridget Kase, B Grade – Alyce Murphy, Nicole Jennings & Bree Guttridge, A Grade - Kate French, Bec Jennings & Taylin Gourley. Tonight we welcome the Sale Football Netball Club to the Traralgon Rec Reserve to play in our 2nd night game of the season. Good luck to all players who take the courts and fields today.

CLUB NOTES WARRAGUL It was wet and blustery when we travelled to Wonthaggi for round 2. It’s 13 wins apiece over the journey so our contests have always been close affairs. Seniors. The seniors had a battle on their hands in difficult conditions and it was a solid third quarter that seemed to finally break a determined Power outfit. Four goals to one broke the shackles in that quarter and It was a good even team performance which resulted in a 19 point victory. Sam Russell was the Downtowner best on ground. Mitch Nobelius was solid and will enjoy his Railway Hotel award. .James Davidson, Kim Drew and Nick Mulqueen rounded out the awards with Rennie, Paredes, Deen and Coombes giving great support. We had 7 individual goal kickers on the day. Reserves. The reserves were also coming off a good first up win. With the lead at 29 points at the main break, a good win was on offer for the visiting Gulls. The hard work paid off and the lads enjoyed their excellent 43 point win.

very tough conditions for all players. Well done to all grades.
Under 18s. These lads probably had the worst of the wet conditions but that didn’t stop them from recording a strong win. They had a good start and continued that on enjoying a nice break of 34 points at half time. That lead was never challenged and they ran out 35 points the better of the Wonthaggi boys. Mason McGarrity received the Warraview Joinery award. Will Pyle is off to Wild Dog Pizza and Darcy Norton to Voyage Fitness. Daniel Coates is getting a trim at Sharkeys Uppercuts while Thomas Baum, Aaron Baxter and Lachie Wilson were among the awards as well. Under 16s. Our under 16s are working hard and

CLUB NOTES MOE The elements were out in full force last Saturday at Sale, with players, coaches and spectators receiving something of a precursor for the winter months ahead. Across the board the day produced a bag a mixed results with some good even contests against our counterparts. Seniors In club cricket it is not uncommon to bowl on a highway one week and then come back the following week to bat on twenty-two yards of wet grass. Our senior team probably suffered the footy equivalent of this, after losing the toss and kicking into a five goal wind in the first quarter, they then had to confront a drastic change that occurred during the second when the wind decided to start blowing the opposite way. Taking nothing away from Sale, who admittedly were the better team on the day, the toss had a big bearing on the result, as Sale were able to create a five goal buffer early that was ultimately the final margin. Better players for Moe were Dylan Farrell, Joel Bragagnolo, Harri Sim, Jayden Van Dyk, Jacob Wood and Allures best footballer Lachlan Rees. Congratulations to Riley Baldi who made his senior debut. Reserves Got the job done in a match that never reached any great heights. The wind was a major factor and Moe were able to use it to their betterment in the second and last to hold on to a crucial 15 point win. Best players were Michael Parker, who should be in charge of the pre-game music from now on, James Heslop, who became a father during the week, Matt Pearce, Tyler Morrow, John Mackay and Luke Chessells. Under 18’s Broke away in the last to win by 17 in a match that was always going to be decided by who utilised the conditions best. The Lions took the ascendency in the final twenty minutes to put the game to rest, keeping Sale goalless whilst slamming on three of their own. Best players were Ben Maslen, Cole Miller, Darcy Durham, the talkative Josh Galea, Jack Walton and Harry Pepper. Under 16’s A relatively even contest was won by Moe after a strong third quarter and a tense final term in which Sale had five shots on goal but couldn’t convert, allowing the Lions to hold on to a two goal win. Best players were Lachlan Rock, Matt Neal, Matt Heywood, Jess McGrath, Joe Skinner and Tajh Eden. Youth Girls (From Dean Abbott) Had their first practice match down at Koo Wee Rup last Sunday week. The match was played in great spirits by both teams, as quite a few of our girls were playing competitive football for the very first time they excelled as a team. Moe ran out winners on the day 8.8.56 to 3.4.22 and will look to hit the ground running in the regular season which kicks off soon.

SOCIAL SCENE HAWAIIAN NIGHT @ Clubrooms from 8pm tonight $10 for a single ticket or $15 for two if you bring someone from outside the club. Sold on the door. Netball A Grade (From Coach Peter Moody) Conditions were appalling, but our A Grade players worked really hard to ensure they restricted Sale to minimal scoring opportunities to win 29 to 40. Best players were Georgia Moody, Shannon Freeman and Charlize Bird. B Grade Made it back to back wins, breaking away to claim a 49 to 38 victory. In a fiery and physical affair, Moe were to be commended for their discipline in what were tough shooting conditions. Best players were Ash Travers and Millie Murphy. C Grade Got their first win of 2018 on the board, with the final score line of 32-21 indicating a closely fought match for the most part. Best performers for Moe were Cheree Carney and Beckea Jones. Under 17’s Sale got the honours in a tight contest that could have gone either way 32-35. Best players were Elly Brown and Patty McInnes Under 15’s Couldn’t quite find enough winners on the day, going down 29-37. Best players were Alyssa Anderson and Layla Blair. Under 13’s Result was somewhat irrelevant given the circumstances. The girls battled hard with limited numbers and will look to bounce back next week. Best players were Callie Koch and Natalie Bills.

CLUB NOTES WONTHAGGI What a difference a day makes, Friday calm and sunny. Saturday ‘terrible’. We would like to thank Darren Green and the Bass Coast Council outdoor staff, for preparing the ground to an immaculate state. To look at it, the surface was good enough for any AFL team to play on. Seniors, We had many chances to compile a winning score, but just couldn’t convert. The weather made for a difficult day to control the ball. We will sort out a couple of areas of concern and be back on the winners list today. Reserves, With numbers being available to us, the skills are still not there. The terrible thunderstorm in the 1st Quarter didn’t help the skill levels. With a number of players back from cricket, it will take a bit of time to pick up the flow of the game. U18’s, Disappointing result, but we move on, the numbers at training have been fantastic. We now need to gel out on the ground. Heads up boys. U16’s Went on their way with a nice win. Darren has them settled into a well drilled team. The tackling and ball movement is wonderful to watch. The team structure looks a good one. Well done. A Grade, In what was difficult conditions for both teams, it was definitely a defenders game. The oldies of the team had a day out, and our youngest player came on and played with great maturity. Lots of positives to take out of the game. Awards, Mitchell n Co - Courtney Blair, Wonthaggi Club - Chelsea Bowman.
36
B Grade, With wild and windy weather, it took some time for the girls to settle. They kept
their heads for most of the game, but the 3rd Q. was our downfall. Believe in yourselves girls.
C Grade, A great win in some horrendous
conditions. It was a great effort by the team with all players adapting to the conditions. Awards, Wonthaggi Club- Steph Magro. Beand - Emily Davey.
U17’s, Everyone played amazing in terrible conditions, A great team effort, with many
changes that we quickly adapted to. Best players Isabella Tiziani and Ellie Bates.
U13’s, With players away on basketball
commitments, it was a great win in trying
conditions. The girls adjusted quickly to the
wind and rain, and managed to produce some great passages of netball. Weep working hard girls, and the rewards will come. Awards, Maya Fraser, and Baia Pugh.
"GO POWER, You Bloody Bewdy."

CLUB NOTES BAIRNSDALE Round 2 weather conditions certainly didn’t impress but today the weather gods are on our side. Last week all three grades of Football took home the 4 points. The 16’s and 18’s continued their 2018 form with a couple of solid wins, hats off to Ando and the Under 18’s group for helping out the Morwell boys who had a few lads missing on Saturday. The senior boys took a while to adjust to the conditions but in the end got over the line to get their first 4 points for the season. Congratulations to Lauren Bills, a club original who played her 250th game for our club. It is a huge achievement in the netball department, and a player who is as loyal as you get being with us for 20 years! Netballers had a positive day with the baby Redlegs having their first win, 15s getting top position on the ladder and 17s putting on a competitive show for Morwell. C Grade were proud to have a close game only going down by 1 goal! A and B grades were also close matches in terrible weather conditions. Vicky Stuckey putting a Best On Court performance for B grade, and Emma Richards in A. With another home game today against Drouin, we are excited to continue improved results on the netball court. Gary Smith took home the load of wood last week, congratulations Gary don’t burn it all at once. Another big day last week. Thank you to all the volunteers who worked their way through the gate, canteen, bar and game day duties. This week is our third home game in a row so I will
thank everyone in advance for the time and effort today!! The Drouin Hawks are in town, Challenge Yourself, on the field and the court. If we can put up what we saw last week I reckon we can get a few more points on the board. After announcing the awards tonight, join us for dinner and drinks at the Grand Terminus Hotel, from 6.30pm. We played Maffra last week and had a tough day against four high quality Maffra teams and in really wild weather. It were competitive for a considerable part of the game and it was an improved effort from our first game. In the seniors we were competitive for the first term but Maffra’s class shone out in the drier second term. Best players were: Tom Barr (Barry Plant Award) , Brendan Dower (Middels ), Bob McCallum (Family Hotel ), James McKellar (Kim’s Kitchen ) and Sam Piner (Steam and Riddles). The reserves game was a good contest with Maffra’s straight kicking a big difference after half time. We will be better from this run. Best players were: Matt Ridley ( DFC Club Award) Jye Mitchell (Middels) ,Sam Rippon (Drouin Gourmet Café ) Kurtis Harper (Family Hotel ) and Joe Collins (Jakks Pizza) . Our under 18’s had another tough contest but fought it out bravely. Best players were: Kane Ward (Select Office Award), Regan Hodge (Intersport), Trent Kearney ( Community Bank ), Jack Halliburton (Community Bank) and Xavier La Frantz (Jakks Pizza). Our young under 16 side again took the game up to Maffra . Our boys are really competitive this year. Best players were: Jack Smith (Select Office Award) , Xavier La Frantz (Intersport) , Logan Corbet (Community Bank), Sam Dennis ( Community Bank ) and Jack Fraser (Jakks Pizza). Our Club person of the week is Di Lehmann ,one of our Vice Presidents , who has done a power of work during the off season and is also club registrar. We greatly value her contribution. We are hoping for another positive performance today against Bairnsdale. CLUB NOTES LEONGATHA Our Round 2 game against Traralgon was played in what could only be described as extremely tough conditions. During the afternoon wind and driving rain confronted the players and this abated slightly into the evening. As always the trip to the valley to take on the Maroons provided us with very strong opposition. In the netball matches the senior sides really did have their work cut out for them. Each of the matches saw Traralgon jump out to a strong lead and build on that till the end of the match. The junior grades were able to stick with the opposition longer with the U15s eventually getting the chocolates. The U13s deserve a special mention doing a sterling job with as many as 6 regulars missing. This gave opportunity to some of our up and coming little Parrots and they had a real crack. Well done girls!! Over at the football the spoils were shared. Well done to our U16s as they recorded their first win for the year. It is always a tough assignment and the lads stood up to both the conditions and the opposition to be impressive winners. The 18s struggled with numbers again but came out of the blocks quite well. The Traralgon boys turned the screws and our lads just could not keep up. The Reserves made hard work of things for 3 quarters but put together a great last quarter to win well in the end. The seniors never really got their game going. The Traralgon side ran hard all day to stretch our midfield and defence to the
limit and always seemed in control. Today we take on Morwell and both clubs will be looking to consolidate positions in all grades. Good luck today everyone and put your best foot forward! Social News Our annual ball will be held after the game today against Morwell. Tickets available from Rob van Rooy or on the door. On May 12th we are hosting The Big Celebrity Sports night. Guest speakers include Jarryd Roughead, Damien Fleming, Darren Lehmann and Bob Murphy. Tickets are limited so get in quick and contact Rob on 0447 682348. Go Parrots!

CLUB NOTES MORWELL In trying conditions at Bairnsdale last week it was mixed results for MFNC. Again our netballers were very good with wins in A,B,C and U17’s. Great to see our ‘C’ Grade win in the nail-biter by one goal. The talented ‘A’ grade won by 9 goals with Laura Fleming and Claire Allison named best. Nadine Sloan and Emily Donoghue were named best in the ‘B’ Grade win and in the one goal victory in ‘C’ Grade; Libby Hodgson & Jessica Hutchinson were dominant. Chloe Radford, Jaida Delicato and Maddy Macfarlane were prominent in the U17 victory. In the U15 match Anna Solomon, Mikayla Couling & Mia Gray played well as did U13’s Maddi Beveridge, Alice Mooney and Bree Bonnici in their game. Thank you to Morwell Top Pub, Bridle Rd Pizza, Peckish Café, Jmac Painting and Wyncity Tenpin for your weekly netball awards. In the Senior footy there was some promising signs for Coach Joel Soutar with the Tigers only beaten in the dying minutes of a great arm-wrestle. Ryan Tatterson, Anthony ‘Tank’ Rosato and Zac Anderson were

our best. Jock’s thirds played a talented Bairnsdale side who jumped us early and remained dominant despite our efforts. Again, Shae Burzese and Elijah Lappin were our best with Jimmy Quinn very handy with 3 of our 6 goals. Inaccurate kicking in tough conditions contributed to the Fourths loss. We kicked 15 points from 19 scoring shots and Tom Caile, Blake Hughes and EJ Sharp were named best. MFNC gratefully thanks sponsors of the week, Federation Training for all your career and training needs and Hip Pocket workwear for all your protective and work apparel. This week we travel to Leongatha to end 3 continuous weeks of travel. Good luck to all our Morwell teams - Go TIGERS!
2018 TRFM GIPPSLAND LEAGUE RECORD
Good morning all, Welcome to this week’s round of GLI football. Last week saw a very interesting round with weather playing its role about half way through the 2nd quarter. Bitter cold wind and almost hail readjusted us back to winter conditions. With the cold came some injuries and a reminder for all of the dangers of hypothermia. A timely reminder to trainers and staff to be aware of the signs and symptoms and treatment required. This week see some milestone games for a couple of SUA favourites young Michael Beauglehole notches up 400 games and even younger Corey Jacobs will run out in game 150. For one so young that is a substantial effort Corey congratulations to both of you and we at SUA look forward to many more from you both . I look forward to catching up with some of you in the next couple of weeks run well play however lets be fair. Thanks, Pete Perillo Chair COM – SUA
