5 YEARS AGO … 11TH MAY, 2013 On the back of a massive 141 point win over Moe, Sale’s percentage took a massive boost and the Magpies took over top spot on the ladder from Morwell. Mitch Davis led the way for Sale with ten goals, Kane Fraser chiming in with another six. For their part Morwell led Maffra at every change, but were never safe until the closing stages. Dean Macdonald was the best for Morwell with six goals, while Jack Brown led a rock solid backline. Traralgon was too strong for Bairnsdale, Josh Jennings leading from the front and Jackson Hall and Lee Stockdale combining for half of the Maroons’ eighteen goals. Wonthaggi visited Warragul and returned home with a seventy point win to their credit, while Leongatha, led by Cade Maskell’s seven goals, drew away from a determined Drouin to win by 37 points.

was too strong for Drouin, the Magpies remaining unbeaten with a 116 point win. Warragul scored a great win over Maffra, Matt Gray and Ryan Davey controlling the stoppages with David Scott-Smith providing a strong target up forward. Moe had the bye.

20 YEARS AGO … 23RD MAY, 1998

A week after Gippsland Latrobe’s thrilling four point win over the Hampden League, Morwell kept in touch with the top five with a hard fought win over Wonthaggi. The Tigers got the early break, then resisted Morwell 13.13.91 d Maffra 10.11.71 a third quarter comeback from the Blues. Danny Millar and Rick Galea Morwell : Best : D.Macdonald, J.Brown, J.Soutar. Goals : D.Macdonald 6, stood out for Morwell, while Wonthaggi’s best were Jy Hart and Brett M.Johnston 2, D.Hutchison 2. Beaumont. Traralgon and Moe went Leongatha 18.7.115 d Drouin 12.6.78 goal for goal in a low scoring affair until half time. The third quarter was Leongatha : Best : C.Maskell, C.Rump, D.Westaway. Goals : C.Maskell 7, crucial as the Maroons added three goals and kept the Lions scoreless. H.Browne 3, B.Davidson 2, A.Hillberg 2. Russell Northe and Matt Habel led the way for Traralgon. Sale was out of Drouin : Best : D.Jeffreys, D.Olsen, R.Salter. Goals : D.Jeffreys 3, the blocks quickly against Bairnsdale, the Magpies’ backline smothering N.Burr 2, R.Salter 2. the Redlegs to the extent of restricting them to just three goals for the match. Leongatha had the bye.

10 YEARS AGO … 10TH MAY, 2008

In a typically bruising encounter, Morwell came from nine points down against Traralgon at the final break to kick five final quarter goals and secure their first premiership points of the season. Both sides had players off the ground nursing injuries as the sides went “hammer and tong” at each other. Robert Michaelides (Morwell) and Sam McCulloch (Traralgon) were named as best for their respective sides, Tim Aitken’s five goals for Traralgon the outstanding goalkicking effort. Leongatha and Garfield fought out a thriller. The Parrots led by three points at the final break and Mal McKenna’s goal for Garfield with three minutes left to play put the Stars a point ahead. The final frantic minutes saw Leongatha add three behinds to take the points. Sale’s multi-pronged forward line

30 YEARS AGO … 21ST MAY, 1988 Sale’s defeat of Warragul left Traralgon as the only unbeaten side after Round 5 matches were decided. After a first quarter which saw both sides kick four goals, Sale won each of the subsequent terms to record a 29 point victory. Traralgon scored a comprehensive win over TTU, Greg Morley (Traralgon) and Steve Dunkley (TTU) both kicking six goals for their teams. Maffra drew away from Leongatha after the half time break to win by 27 points, Glenn Thorson’s six goals for the Parrots keeping him at the top of the league’s goalkicking list. Morwell’s errant shooting for goal (3.10 at half time) looked like proving costly in their game against Moe, however they came out in the third term to kick seven goals and regain the lead and go on to win by eighteen points. Bairnsdale was also off target against Churchill. The Redlegs had 8.19 on the board at half time, but redeemed themselves in the second half to win comfortably.

40 YEARS AGO … 29TH APRIL, 1978 In one of the most incredible quarters of football in this league’s history, Warragul stormed home against Morwell. Each team had kicked four goals in each of the first three quarters to see Morwell ahead by eight points at the final break, 12.16.88 to 12.8.80. No-one expected what was to happen as the Gulls unleashed a goal spree which yielded 13 goals straight to propel them to a 56 point victory. Geoff McCay and Tony Waters were best for the Gulls with Terry Kilday (5 goals) and Waters (4) the main goalkickers. Traralgon, led by Terry Hunter and Tom Beveridge, led at every change to record a 28 point win over Leongatha. Bairnsdale was too strong for Maffra. Mark Blandford and Murray Frew kicked 14 of the Redlegs’ 21 goals. Yallourn / Yallourn North was clinical in its 33 point win over Moe, establishing an early break and building upon it, although to their credit Moe slightly outscored the Blues in the final term. Coach Ray Koeleman led YYN from the front, ably supported by Mike Lovison’s four goals. Sale had the bye.

Wonthaggi hasn’t been troubled by the road trip east as they have won 9 of the 11 games they have played on Bairnsdale’s City Oval. Wonthaggi finds itself in a position of already having to play catch-up if they are to be a finals contestant, however last week’s great win over Traralgon was a much needed boost. Bairnsdale would be reasonably satisfied with its start to the season, but will have today’s game marked as a “must win” if they are to consolidate.

Maffra v. Morwell

Notes : Morwell went through a purple patch with regard to playing at Maffra, winning there three years running between 2013 and 2015, however the Eagles have regained their fortress like hold on visiting teams. They played their lowest ever match aggregate game there in 2016, the 42 point aggregate now the third lowest scoring game in league history. Maffra has asserted itself as the team to beat in 2018, while Morwell works hard at getting some Senior experience into some talented youngsters, but it would be a foolhardy team that takes any game against the Tigers lightly.

Moe came within about a second and a half of possibly winning the game as Tom Long marked in the forward pocket as the siren sounded. The one point margin in Leongatha’s favour is the closest game the two have played (they’ve never drawn) since Moe won by that same margin in 1978. Today will be a great test for the Lions to see if they can match it with one of the power teams of recent years.

Warragul showed last year that they are capable of pulling off the unexpected when they pipped Traralgon at Traralgon by three points to win their first game over the Maroons since 2009. Both have scored solid wins already this year against quality opposition, but both would still be seeking greater consistency.

As the half time siren sounded the scoreboard read Sale 12.5.77 to Drouin 0.1.1 and all there bemoaned what they might witness in the second half. Drouin stunned everyone with a win in the second half as they kicked eleven second half goals to sale’s eight to take 22 points off the half time margin. Both teams have bolstered their stocks this year, the Magpies stunning Traralgon and Moe recently to let all know that they are going to push hard this year. Drouin will give some pluck this afternoon and make the Magpies earn the points.

CLUB NOTES WONTHAGGI With a lovely day expected at Wonthaggi on Saturday, we played host to Traralgon FNC. Very calm and dewy conditions set the scene for the start of the day. U16’s, This was the game our boys had waited for. We had never beaten Traralgon U16’s in approx. 21 attempts. The game was played hard and fair with our boys finally tasting success. Dasha was pleased. U18’s, Our boys struggled all game against a well drilled team. Injuries very much took its toll on us. Which seems to happen every time we play this club, not sure why ?? Still plenty of room for improvement, keep you heads up lads, the wins will arrive shortly. Well done to Ross and Dave, for your coaching to these lads. Reserves, Another tough day on the park. Once again players not turning up was a disappointment, almost now to a point of frustration. Also genuine unavailability’s were hard to cover. We had some of our elder statesman fill in the holes, and held their heads up high. The club is always behind our players, who want to play for our great club. Seniors, We always knew playing Traralgon, either home or away is a challenge. The misery of last week, was now long gone. The lead was a quarter by quarter affair. In the last, the supporters heavily cheered their team over the line. It was a great win, and was enjoyed by our supporters. A Grade, We were always going to be up against it, playing the powerhouse of Traralgon. The girls played fantastic competitive netball. Thank you to all the

26

girls that stepped up and played with already playing a game. Let’s continue this momentum, at Bairnsdale today. Awards Voyage - Alyce Whylie, Cape Tavern – Chloe Cengia. B Grade, We welcomed Traralgon, knowing it was going to be a tough game without Jo Duscher. We had to do a juggle with the girls, but to their credit they fought hard all game against the top team. Awards – Cape Tavern, Bonny, Voyage – Olivia. C Grade, Unfortunately not our best game to date. Back to the basics across the court, and hard work on our passes are essential. Let’s get fired up today, and bring home a big win. Go Power !! U 17’s, A great game against a tough opposition, our defence worked overtime doing a fantastic job. Let’s get back on the winners list today. Awards Bella A, and Lily S. U 15’s, The girls played a strong game to come away with their 1st win for the season. Well done girls on a great win. Awards Felicity T. and Tori L. U 13’s. GO POWER, you bloody bewdy.

CLUB NOTES MOE Round 4 vs Bairnsdale The Ted Summerton facilities were in tip-top shape last Saturday as we hosted Bairnsdale. Across the day honours were shared between the two clubs, as we close out the first month of the season with all our teams in a relatively strong position moving forward. Seniors Was quite a good game to watch from a spectator’s point of view as it was a match that had a bit of everything. Bairnsdale brought the heat in the first term, taking the ascendency into quarter time after having most of the play. A steely resolve by the back six at the first break to not allow another five goals against came to fruition in the second term as Moe slammed on eight unanswered majors. Darnell Grech was causing havoc inside fifty, kicking three for the term, whilst Mitchell Stanlake got airborne and nearly collided with a 747 after pulling in a huge hanger on the wing. With a limited bench in the second half, the Lions fought strongly as Bairnsdale kept coming, closing the margin to 23 points at the twelve minute mark of the final term, before Moe were able to steady and run out 29 point winners. As well as Stanlake and Grech, best players were Tyson Biffin, who put his body on the line a number of times, Jacob Wood, who set up a number of scoring opportunities, Jayden Van Dyk, who continues to get better, Joel Bragagnolo, who did Joel Bragagnolo things, and Harri Sim who celebrated his nineteenth birthday in style. Under 18’s In a high standard game, both defences were rock solid as scoring proved difficult. The match was a virtual arm wrestle for three and a bit quarters, before Bairnsdale were able to break away and grind out a twenty point victory. In the key moments, Bairnsdale’s ability to compete in the air and efficiency going forward were probably the two key areas that proved the difference. Best players for Moe were Wade Anderson, Sam Lodge, Josh Galea, Ben Maslen, Pat Bills and Ben Van Dyk. Under 16’s Faced a very strong and manly Bairnsdale side that proved to be too strong on the day. The Redlegs got out to a fast start which Moe were never able to recover from. Possession was shared in the second and for parts of the third, but overall our boys were beaten by a better team. Best players were Lachlan Rock, Matthew Heywood, Brandon Watson, Matthew Devon, Hayden Molesworth and Rohan Demczuk. Youth Girls (From Dean Abbott) Registered a win on debut against Morwell, by three quarter time it looked as though the girls inaccuracy in front of goal may have come back to haunt them as they had registered 2.8 to a rallying opposition that had 3.2. In an exciting last quarter the lead changed on multiple occasions, firstly thanks to a great snap goal from Ruby Keenan and then a second major from Maddie Frazer. Improved accuracy in front of goal in the last term secured our girls and the club its first official win in Youth Girls competition, with the final scoreboard reading Moe 4.8.32 to Morwell 4.4.28. Best players in a really hard fought win were tackling machine Hannah Van Breugal, Makiah Robertson, Shaye Symes in a fantastic Captain’s game, Jade

MAJOR RAFFLE First prize $38K Audi! SEE A SENIOR FOOTBALL OR NETBALLER FOR A TICKET $50 a ticket, drawn after the last home game. 5 prizes up for grabs. Abbott, Maddison Frazer and Portia Bell. Netball A Grade (From Peter Moody) Were thin on players this week, with six coming up from B Grade to play back to back. The team battled their hearts out but just weren’t able to get the job done, going down 42 to 38. Keeping things in perspective, to sit 2-2 with two losses by under four goals with virtually half a side unavailable, the players are to be commended for their application so far this season. Best players were Maleah Travers and Cherr Carney. B Grade Continued on their winning way, easing past all comers to record a decent 43 to 30 victory. B Grade haven’t lost a game since April last year, how about that. Best players were Ash Travers and Milly Walker. C Grade Did it easy in a one sided affair, cruising to a big win. With percentage usually coming in handy at the pointy end of the season, boasters like these can sometimes give teams that all important propulsion into the top three. Best players for Moe were Carly Van Der Pluym and Remi Edebohls. Under 17’s Had a hard fought 43 to 40 win in what was a spirited contest that could have gone either way. Best players on the day were Elise Gordon and Alyssa Anderson. Under 15’s (From Shannon Freeman) Went down by one in the end, wasn’t the girls best performance and we didn’t get the win we were hoping for but the girls will learn plenty from the loss. Best on went to Destiny Mackrell and Lacey Pederson. Under 13’s According to the players nothing exciting happened so we will take them at their word. Moe winning 36 to 23. Best players were Erin Warner and Brandy King.

CLUB NOTES LEONGATHA Our second home game in a row was an opportunity for some consolidation in terms of ladder positions. Unfortunately Maffra came down and spoilt the party for a number of the Parrot teams. Under sunny skies and with no wind at all conditions were simply stunning for football. The U16s got us off to a flyer by playing a great brand of football. They mixed quick moving offence with determined defence and had a convincing win. The 18s continued where the 16s left off. Running hard and sharing the ball with precision they were the better team by far. Again both sides were a bit short of players and kudos to both coaches for their approach to the game and player welfare. Well-done lads! The Reserves started slowly, came hard and then fell away in the last few minutes. Many of the players had very good patches but were inconsistent throughout the game. The Seniors looked good early, especially with CJ going forward this week and in everything early. Unfortunately he received a head knock and was out of the game early in the second term. From there we fell away and were unable to match it with a Maffra unit that were prepared to run harder for longer. The U13s dug deep for a 1 goal win and this will be a great confidence booster for them. They have been working very hard and deserved to win a close one. The 15s drew in a high scoring game, the pressure was on early and never let up in this fast paced game. The U17s had a good win and this will hold

30

them in good stead as well. They are stating to team really well and this could be a big year for them. Unfortunately the Cs, Bs and As were all on the wrong side of the scoring ledger. That said they are certainly giving their all and improving each week. Keep it up girls!! Last week’s player auction results are as follows. C Grade Ruth Hardy, B Grade Keely Price, A Grade Nicola Marriott, Reserves Ryan Olden and Seniors Col Sanbrook. Hope this makes some readers happy. Social News The Big Celebrity Sports night is almost upon us and tickets look to be nearly exhausted. Some people may still have a spot or two on their tables so if interested please contact Rob on 0447 682348 to avoid disappointment. Go Parrots!

CLUB NOTES MAFFRA “Brothers (and sisters) in arms” has been the message this past week. In all clubs, siblings add a depth of commitment to the team and at Maffra, we are blessed. What the Burgiels did on their left foot, the Carrs can now do on their right, and the Allmans do, on all limbs, over at the courts. The seniors were down a couple before quarter time - last week’s breakout Sean Day and his fellow defender David Adams were done. CLUB NOTES MORWELL In perfect conditions last week at Morwell we had first use of the new netball courts, a fantastic facility for the club. Our A grade netballers responded with another strong performance. Rachel Allison & Courtney Garth named best. Claire Allison went down heavily hitting her head but despite the throbbing headache was still volunteering behind the bar at 6pm; hats off to Claire. B Grade were unlucky losing by 1 goal in a great contest. Nicole Dalton was outstanding as WD and Emily Donoghue had a good game. C grade had a loss last week with Maddy Schneider & Annie Little our best. The U17’s had a strong win with Lucy Bertrand, Isla McCrae & Rahni Stevens best. The U15 & U13’s went down but some good signs with U15 best Macie Leslie, Emily Fourlze & Alyssa Furlan and U13 Taylah Pavey, Olivia Fourlze and Daniella Utanga. In the Football department last week, only our seconds chalked-up a win. Our fourths were unlucky to lose by 5 points having had their chances. Best in our seniors were Dan Musil, Ryan Tatterson & Zac Anderson; 2nd’s Pat McGrath, Shane Gniel & Nick Mills; 3rd’s Luke Dal Pra, Zac Mongta & Jordan Wilson and 4th’s Tom Caile, Callum Hutchison & Blake Hughes. VOLUNTEERS – help always needed in all age groups so see coaches, team managers or committee if you can occasionally help. A shout out to Geoff Gniel who spends all

CLUB NOTES WARRAGUL We headed off to Drouin on keen to rebuild after

the loss to Moe the week prior. The Hawks hadn’t

tasted success at senior level for a while but ladder positions don’t count when these sides meet.

Drouin held sway by 8 points at the first change and again at the long break. The Gulls had a couple of important outs but appeared outgunned by a running Hawks side.

The lead blew out to 22 at the last change and it

appeared the beer would be tasting very nice for

the Hawks. The cavalry arrived courtesy of 5 goals to the Gulls but inaccuracy saw us fail by 1 point.

CLUB NOTES TRARALGON

TRARALGON Last week we travelled to Wonthaggi to take on the Power in perfect weather. Our under 16’s got the day underway with a terrific game of football. Wonthaggi got the jump early, but our boys steadied and were right in the game until the very end where the power ran out 20 point winners. This young side is improving every week and a win is not far away. Best players were L. D''Angelo, K. Ruyters, H. Middleton, D. Grinstead-Jones, B. Rickard and J. Musgrove. The under 18’s just keep improving and have shown they will be a force in the competition this season running away with this game by 95 points. A highly skilled team they work hard for each other and help each other to improve as they move toward playing senior footy. Best players on the day were L. Johnson, E. Williams, T. Webster, T. McMahon, P. Strong and B. White. With the sun still shining our young Reserves team took to the field eager to build on the win against Sale the previous week. A fast start saw the young maroons with 5 goals on the board in the first quarter. Wonthaggi steadied and tightened the game up, but our boys ran out comfortable 56 point winners. It must be said that the two club umpires did a fantastic job and should be congratulated, maybe they should’ve umpired the senior game. Pleasing to see that our best players were all boys from our Thirds team of 2017. Best players were L. McDonald, T. Northe, J. Barnes, J. Sands, M. Williams and W. Gaudion The seniors took to the field keen to make amends for the loss in round 3 but soon found themselves 16 points down at half time in a very scrappy and not very skilful game of footy. After refocusing during the long break, they came out better structured and worked themselves to a 3 point lead and momentum going into the last quarter. A fast start to the last quarter saw the maroons extend their lead and then some extraordinary umpiring decisions turned the game on its head. Players and supporters from both sides were totally bemused and in the end, Wonthaggi were given the 4 points. Better players for Traralgon were J. Neagle, J. Strong, T. Northe, M. Mustoe, C. Ambler and C. Little Wonthaggi have completed many upgrades to their facilities and they are to be congratulated. The way the ground was presented was terrific and deserving of a final. They are a club heading in the right direction and judging by the way their under 16’s thru to the seniors played last weekend, they will right in the mix at seasons end.

We contested all games in great weather. Warragul were able to win back the Gazette Cup with more wins overall on the day. The endeavour was good but Warragul ran out comfortable winners. Best players were: Shaun Staka ( DFC Club Award) , Brendan Clarke ( Middels) Matt Ridley (Drouin Gourmet Café) , Jayden Clarke (Family Hotel) and Jason Hummel (Jakks Pizza). Our under 18’s had another tough contest but fought it out bravely. Despite being short in numbers we are big in endeavour. Our boys have talent, we just lack depth at the moment.
