MORWELL V MOE
PAST ROUND 6's By Paul Carter
5 YEARS AGO … 18TH MAY, 2013 Morwell enjoyed its best start to a season for thirty years when they romped to victory against Drouin. The Tigers took the game early with 8.7 to 1.2 in the opening term, on their way to a 97 point win. Joel Soutar and Tim Ryan were the best for Morwell with eleven players sharing the goals. Keegan Bott and Wayne Morris were tireless for the Hawks. Sale’s massive win over Bairnsdale saw them also unbeaten, and top of the ladder. Josh Dunkley and Jordan Dessent led the charge for Sale with a dozen goalkickers. Wonthaggi set up their 135 point win over Moe with a fifteen goal first half. Adam Cook (7) and Dom O’Connor (6) dominated up forward for the Power with O’Connor named as their best. Six unanswered third quarter goals by Warragul saw them take a stranglehold on their game with Leongatha, the Parrots rallying in the final term, but the damage had been done. Maffra ground their way to a seventeen point win over Traralgon, the middle quarters being where they caught, then overtook, the Maroons. Ben Coleman (Maffra) and Jaime Aitken (Traralgon) were named as best for their respective teams.
first win of the season. The Hawks built on their three goal quarter time lead to eventually win by 41 points. Moe claimed second place on the ladder from Warragul when it scored by 21 points against Traralgon. The fleet of foot Leigh Hale and Matt Dickason led the Lions, Tim Aitken’s six goals the stand-out effort for the Maroons. Maffra had the bye.

20 YEARS AGO … 30TH MAY, 1998 Moe and Morwell played the match of the round at the Summerton Reserve. The Tigers jumped Moe with six goals to three in the opening term, and built that into a 22 point half time lead. The decisive quarter was the third as Moe bombarded the goals, rattling on 8.5 to 3.1 to lead by two goals, which they took out to 26 points by the final siren. Shayne Jarvis and Jordan Meiklle kicked just over half the Moe goals, with Troy Dwyer their best. Danny Millar and Haydn Smith were the best for the Tigers. Leongatha thrashed Bairnsdale, the Redlegs not managing their first goal until the final term, while the Parrots kicked 23, led by Tim Traill’s eight. Wonthaggi led Maffra by ten straight goals at half time before the Eagles mounted a second half revival with nine goals to five, but it was too late. Darren Wheildon kicked seven goals for the Blues. Daniel Surkitt’s five goals led the Magpies to a win over Warragul. Fifty point three quarter time leaders, Sale kicked just seven behinds in the final term while Warragul kicked five straight goals, but Sale was still the comfortable winner. Traralgon had the bye.

On the weekend that Yarram refused to play Wonthaggi in the Alberton League, Sale recorded a hard fought win over fellow flag aspirant Warragul. The Magpies, led by six goals from Brenton Martin, kicked five goals in each of the first two quarters to put their claim forward. They extended the lead in the third term and the teams matched each other in the last. At Garfield, Morwell led by just three points at the final change before kicking two goals six to three behinds in the last to take the points. “Funky” Duncan and Liam Visser were the main movers for the Tigers, while Andy Soumilas and Luke Tynan stood out for the Stars. Bob McCallum gave Drouin the edge in the ruck to lead the Hawks to their

30 YEARS AGO … 28TH MAY, 1988 Traralgon scored a remarkable win over third placed Sale. Down 1.2 to 6.0 at the first break, the Maroons, through the leadership of Allan Jennings and Greg Morley, pegged the lead back to less than a goal at half time, then kicked twelve second half goals to Sale’s two to turn that quarter time deficit of 28 points into a final winning margin of 57 points. Morley kicked 6 goals and Jennings five. It was torrid going at Moe as Leongatha ground their way to a 29 point win, restricting the Lions to 1.4 for the second half. Glenn Thorson kicked five of the Parrots’ nine goals. After a close first term, Morwell kicked away from Bairnsdale with six second quarter goals, the Tigers building on it to win by 45 points. Darryl Webster led a solid Morwell defence. Warragul was expected to win quite comfortably over Churchill, however the Kangaroos made the going hard for the Gulls, Warragul only safe in the final term. Rob Ballingall dominated the midfield for the Gulls, youngster Gary Welsh the best for Churchill. Maffra kept in touch with the top Four with a strong win over TTU. John Hutchins kicked six goals for the Eagles, the second quarter seeing Maffra establish a lead as they put on seven goals.

40 YEARS AGO … 6TH MAY, 1978 Yallourn / Yallourn North’s massive win over Bairnsdale had the old timers reminiscing about the all-powerful Blues’ team of the 1930s that racked up a cricket score. (In 1933 Yallourn kicked 53.27.345 against a severely undermanned Bairnsdale, with Jack Turner kicking 28 goals) YYN rattled on nine first quarter goals, then went on with the job, Neil Meredith’s seven goals earning him best afield honours. Errant shooting for goal almost cost Warragul, which had to come from behind to beat Maffra. Graeme Cook was best and a young Gary Ayres top-scored with four goals for the Gulls. In a remarkable effort Tom Bermingham kicked eight of Maffra’s ten goals. Traralgon and Sale thrilled the crowd in a game that produced 37 goals. Sale burst out with ten first quarter goals to Traralgon’s four, and it wasn’t until the final term that the Maroons had pegged back that deficit and turned it into a narrow win. The experience of Peter Hall, Allan Lowe and Gray Malone allowed Traralgon to keep cool heads after the opening onslaught. Leongatha turned a narrow quarter time deficit into a five point half time lead, then went on to win by thirty points against Morwell. Ian Salmon was the best for Leongatha and led the scoring with four goals. Moe had the bye.

After they won there in Wonthaggi’s first year in this competition, 1995, the Magpies had to wait until 2011 for their next successful trip. They then won at Wonthaggi four times in a row, but the last three years have seen victories to the Power by margins of 46, 7 and 38 points. The last six matches between these teams have seen the home side victorious on every occasion.

Notes : These great rivals meet today with Morwell still seeking its one hundredth victory over Moe. Moe has won the last five games played between the two, including their first finals match together since 2005. Although they are in a rebuilding phase in 2018, the Tigers have shown already that they are not a team to be taken lightly as they have talented players in every division on the ground. Moe is enjoying one of its better seasons in recent years and will be made to work hard for the premiership points this afternoon.

The Maroons have won the last sixteen games they have played against the Hawks, Drouin’s last win over Traralgon coming in early 2011. It’s even longer for the Hawks’ last successful visit to Traralgon, which goes back to their 24 point win there in 2007. Traralgon finds itself now in unfamiliar territory, sitting in seventh place on the ladder. It’s the first time since 2014 that the Maroons have lost three successive games. Drouin showed what they are capable in Round 4 when they knocked off Warragul – a similar effort this afternoon could really trouble the home side.

With the competition for the top five rungs on the ladder hotter in 2018 than it has been for several years, matches such as this one take on renewed importance. Who knows what the scenario will be going into the final home and away rounds of the year, and this game could well be one of those sliding doors moments.

They come up today against the Redlegs, one of the league’s improvers in 2018. With the game to be played on Bairnsdale’s City Oval, and under lights in front of what is sure to be a huge local crowd, don’t be surprised if the scoreline is much closer than the pundits predict.

CLUB NOTES MAFFRA This past week has seen two of Maffra's good
blokes pass away- Maffra Rovers dual premiership player and Brian 'Woofa' Davis. The town will be poorer for their loss.
Our day started badly with Trent's boys, down in numbers, playing against young men. We
understand this - it builds a resilience into our senior ranks. Keep it up lads, the club and supporters are here for you.
The thirds was tightest, and influential players are emerging. Joseph Ziino meets the Sam Walker-
David Adams mould, Josh Edey and Tom Thatcher morphing James Huts, Cayden Jones following in his brother’s footsteps and Brent McKenzie has
the diligence of Dan O'Brien - now he needs the experience.
Meeting last year’s nemesis, and premiers, the
Ressies inflicted a double donut loss on the Tigers.
Matt Lee was back in (red and) black, while beaconof-class Ben Batahla intercepted Morwell's scoring
attempts. Sam Robbins gave his best performance since juniors in a new role. Jim Reeves keeps
stating his case to the selectors, while Mitch Dignan is a pack-busting power player. Mitch Allman
smacked an impressive volley into the back of the net from 30.
The seniors was a much tighter contest than the final score and ladder indicate. Luke Shelton's
from an even half time score slowly eased the side downhill into a blow-out loss. An impromptu switch
from goal defence to centre for skipper Paige Biddle resulted in regaining some steadiness, and up
either end, shooter Meg Gordyn and keeper Sarah Luke were lanky thorns in Morwell’s side, but it wasn’t enough.
B grade also had a hard day at the courts, despite the hard slog trying to defend Morwell’s onslaught of goals put in from Renee Potts and Em Boyle, while Bec Stobie was stoic in wing attack.
Our C grade girls are looking to repeat their
awesome season this year, comfortable perched
atop the ladder in an undefeated position. Regulars

CLUB NOTES MORWELL Welcome – Today is our Ladies Day and fundraiser for the Breast Cancer Foundation so please donate generously today. Netball will also have a Mothers vs Players game after the ‘A’ Grade game, so come join the fun and donate. At Maffra, last week we faced some strong opposition. Our A & B Grade netball again stood-up with strong wins in both grades. Laura Fleming was a noted stand-out in ‘A’ Grade and again confirmed that Mitch Marino is the 2nd best athlete in the household. Maffra proved too strong in the remaining netball grades. Best players on the courts for Morwell were: ‘A’ Grade Laura Fleming & Rachel Allison. B Grade Shelby Wulfers & Casey Sherriff, C Grade Jess Hutchison & Annie Little, U17’s Lucy Bertrand, Chloe Radford & Isla McCrae, U15’s Abbey Tripp, Emily Fourlze & Mikayla Couling and U13’s Olivia Fourlze, Bree Bonnici & Alice Mooney. In the Football department last week, our talented fourths had a very strong win and thank you to the fourths and thirds players who offered to play 2 games on the day to help the club. Congratulations to Shae Burzese and Patt Quinn on their first senior games with Shae Burzese celebrating with an early goal. Best Players were Ryan Hearn, Tayler Weatherill & Ryan Tatterson; 2nd’s Reece Lewis, Mitch Marino and Elijah Lappin; 3rd’s Tom Caile, Caleb McRae, Damian Hough and 4th’s Zac Bezzina, Callum

CLUB NOTES MOE Round 5 vs Leongatha Last weekend we hosted Leongatha in what was a day that produced wins, losses and even a draw against our counterparts. As always we thank those behind the scenes who keep the club ticking over and operating as effectively as it does. Seniors Was a relatively good contest for the most part, with some late Leongatha goals not doing the match justice as both sides traded momentum throughout. Some butchering of the ball going forward and a general discrepancy in overall class were probably the areas which separated the two sides. With the competition again very even across the board, Moe can go into every match relatively confident of putting on a good show. Best players were Riley Baldi in just his second game, Peter Ainsworth in just his 347th, Jay Murphy, Mitchell Stanlake, Darnell Grech and James Blaser. Congratulations to Leo Connolly who made his senior debut. Reserves Fantastic win with every player contributing. A frenetic first quarter netted Moe six goals and left their opponents shell shocked. From there, the Lions were able to grind out a 27 point victory as they found winners at most contests. Best players were the man with the high IQ Aaron Wilson, Calvin Fry who is as honest as the day is long, Clint Taylor whose efforts drew comparisons to Alex Rance, Jai Massese who is back smiling on the field, James Heslop in another solid game, and Tyler Morrow who just gets the job done. Under 18’s Came to play and went from strength to strength across the four quarters. After kicking four goals in the first term Moe were able to hold off their Leongatha opponents and come away with an important ten goal win. Best players were Josh Galea, Ben Maslen straight from the barber, Trent Baldi who took a ridiculous one handed mark inside fifty, Jack Walton and left footers Wade Anderson and Caleb Michie. Under 16’s In a nutshell: should’ve won it, could’ve lost it, were lucky to draw it. After controlling the first three quarters, Moe virtually paid the price for complacency and were only saved by a late rushed behind that levelled the scores with a minute to play. Supporters of both clubs were kept on the edge of their seats throughout a tense final term, in which it would be hoped the young Moe players learnt when to save a game and when to still play to win it. Best players were Lachlan Rock, Harry Hopkins with five majors, Jess McGrath, Tajh Eden, Luke Summersgill who took some timely marks inside the back fifty, and Ben Fleming in his best game for the club.

MAJOR RAFFLE First prize $38K Audi! SEE A SENIOR FOOTBALL OR NETBALLER FOR A TICKET $50 a ticket, drawn after the last home game. 5 prizes up for grabs.
Netball A Grade Welcomed back a few handy inclusions and were too strong all over the court, winning 54 to 30. Big scores have been the order of the day in the early stages of the season so the side will need players firing on all cylinders to ensure they put themselves in strong positions weekly. Best players were Shannon Freeman, Bella Hodgson and Charlize ‘Shorty’ Bird. B Grade Had a solid win which could have been larger had it not been for some errant shooting. B Grade’s title defence has started well but the team will face greater challenges in the coming weeks as they come up against Morwell and Traralgon. C Grade A comfortable enough 30 to 20 win now sees Moe in a strong position at 4-1. After an arm wrestle start, the Lions created a buffer which their opponents were always chasing throughout most of the second half and came home with the chocolates. Under 17’s In a controversial match, Moe were ultimately left to lick their wounds after falling short by the barest of margins. Devastated players and coaches were left to lament what may have been and will look to get back on their feet in seven day’s time. Under 15’s Had a good 45 to 37 win, after a tight opening half Moe were able to assert their authority on the contest and break away. A 3-1 start to the season should give the side confidence moving forward. Under 13’s Went down 25 to 37 in a spirited contest. Feedback from on lookers is that for the side to get better they need greater presentation coming at the ball carrier, as opposed to running down court and trying to get overlap possession.

FOOTBALL CLUB
Last week we travelled to Warragul with high hopes for all sides and had a very successful day as a club winning 8 out of the 10 games on offer. Unfortunately, it was our seniors that once again fell short and were beaten by a Warragul team on the improve. With 25 shots on goal each, we were less accurate than Warragul kicking 16 behinds for the day. It must be said that Warragul got 5 of their goals from the goal square or close enough to it after the press we were playing was easily broken for the 3rd week in a row, letting them in for very easy scoring opportunities. Our backline was consistently under pressure with our midfield seemingly only capable of running one way which the coaching staff are no doubt working hard to get sorted. Warragul on the other hand worked for each other, ran hard and looked determined to redeem themselves for their loss against Drouin. Hopefully our young Maroons learn from this game and put in a much better performance this week against Drouin. Well done to Tim Northe who played his 100th senior game. Better players on the day were Conor Little, Tate Marsh and Jackson Hall. The Reserves welcomed back a couple of players and put on a solid performance against a team one spot higher than them on the ladder. With an open and fast paced game, our lads kicked very accurately to put 5 goals on the board at the quarter time break. The game evened out after this point and 5 goals was the margin in the end. Our reserves are starting to believe in each other and being such a young side will continue to improve. Best players were Michael Burge, Nic Quenault, Lachlan McDonald, Darcy Barnes, Trent Hourigan and Wilson Gaudion. In a game full of pressure which caused many mistakes our Thirds continued on their winning way. This group are really starting to click and the whole club is looking forward to watching these young men develop as they continue their journey into senior footy. Unfortunately, this group have a two week break now with Drouin not fielding an under 18 team so keep a look out for a few of them running around in the reserves and seniors. Best players against Warragul were Luke Johnson, Thomas McMahon, Tye Hourigan, Kade Marsh and Ben Cheetham. With no wins so far for the season and with pressure mounting the under 16’s took to the field knowing they had a job to do. They have been so close in all their games we knew it wouldn’t be long before they broke through for a win and they did so in fine fashion kicking 13 goals to 2 with Kade Ruyters kicking 6 of them. Congratulations to this group and now with one
THE MAROONS win on the board we look forward to watching them keep improving throughout the season. Best players were Luis D’Angelo, Kade Ruyters, Riley Adams, Hugh Dunbar, Jayson Musgrove and Flynn Kennedy. As reported in The Express, Warragul defeated Drouin last week, so our A Grade game was touted to be a close competition. With Kate French out due to injury, our two U17 training partners (Heidi Gaudion and Chelsea Livingstone) had to step up and fill some big shoes – which they did – helping their very supportive and encouraging teammates to a 77-32 win. Across the board we had some very large winning margins against Warragul, but all games still felt competitive. Jnr “Coaches” Awards: U13 – Sophie Little, Anesu Gwara & Amali Adams, U15 – Alyssa Tangi, Amity Blair & Chelsey Webster, U17 – Saskia Eenjes, Lori Scholtes & Heidi Gaudion. Snr Awards: C Grade – Tiffany Boatman, Sophie Membrey & Hannah Aurish, B Grade – Claire Thomas, Bree Guttridge & Cassidy Smith, A Grade – Maddi Stockdale, Bec Jennings & Caitlan Ponton. This weekend our A Grade Coach, Caitlan Ponton will play her 200th Senior Game for TFNC. Congratulations! This week we welcome Drouin and look forward to some fantastic contests on the footy field and netball courts. Good luck to all players and umpires involved today. Go Maroons.

We travelled east to Sale last week for the clash against Sale. The games were played in good but windy weather. Sale showed they are playing good football in all grades and brought us back down to earth after our great win against Warragul. In the seniors we started slowly and allowed Sale to take a 6 goal lead into quarter time. With 5 players out and our intensity nowhere near the level of the previous week we were solidly beaten. We will need to get back on track this week. Best players were: Bob McCallum (Barry Plant Award) , Tom Barr (Middels ) ,Jeb McLeod (Family Hotel ), Austin Hames (Kim’s Kitchen ) and Sam Piner (Steam and Riddles). The Reserves game was a closer contest with our Hawks right in the game till half time. Sale was harder at the ball in the third term and built a 21 point lead at three quarter time. The Magpies sustained this lead in the final quarter to run out comfortable winners. Best players were: Tyson Buckingham ( DFC Club Award) ,Simon Gardner ( Middels), Owen Walsh (Drouin Gourmet Café) , Charlie Bethune (Family Hotel) and Jake Simpson (Jakks Pizza). Sadly our shortage of under 18’s has meant we are not able to sustain an under 18 team for the remainder of the season. It would have been good to have some more support from the Gippsland League with permits to help our player numbers. With three major injuries to our players in the last two weeks our situation was not sustainable. We will work hard to change our situation for 2019. Our young under 16 side had a good game against the young Magpies. There were many passages of good play with some of our players really showing improvement. We lost by 23 points against a team who has only lost one game and are third placed. Despite the defeat there were many positives to take from game and coach Jim Sandman was positive about the effort. Best players were: Xavier LaFrantz (Select Office Award) , Bailey Prior (Intersport) , Josh Maric (Community Bank), Oran Anderson (Community Bank ) and Andrew Hobday (Jakks Pizza). Our Club person of the week is number 1 ticket holder and life member John Atkins. John is at every game and a long serving trainer. He acts as property steward as well and has for many years been a stalwart of our club. John is an outstanding contributor to our club and is a huge asset to our club. We greatly value his contribution. e are hoping for a good day today against arch rivals Warragul. A special welcome to all our sponsors. CLUB NOTES LEONGATHA Last week at Moe saw some great games of netball and football with both clubs sharing the honours. The wind was very strong and conditions were cool making playing conditions difficult for all. The U13s netballers started proceedings in fine fashion recording a 12 goal win. These girls are improving weekly and are gaining confidence in their ability. Georgia is doing a great job as well so keep it up girls. The 15s went down in a high quality game. The Moe team was too strong in the end showing that there are no easy games in the 15s draw. The U17s had a great win, coming from 6 down in the third stanza. They worked very hard to gain the ascendency and held on for a 1-goal win. C grade worked hard in an even contest but went down in the end. Both B grade and A grade started slowly and then showed themselves to be very competitive for the rest of the game. Everyone is working very hard and we know the wins will come. Keep it up girls! The U16s started very slowly giving the Moe boys a big head start. They then stemmed the flow but left themselves a 26 point deficit at the last change. They then came home like a steam train, hitting the lead before having to settle for a draw. The 18s found the going pretty tough. Moe are a well drilled side with stars all over the ground. The Parrot lads matched them for great portions of the game but at times could not stop the roll that Moe was able to get on. The Reserves started slowly and never really got going at all. 5 goals down in the first 12 minutes left them flat and without any answers. They will need to avoid the slow starts if they want to play finals. The Senior game was a great game, a really tough old fashioned encounter. With Jake vander
Pligt playing his first senior game and James Lloyd coming in for his first game at the club there was plenty of interest in proceedings. Young vander Pligt didn't look out of place and Lloyd endeared himself to the Parrot faithful with a stellar performance at centre half forward. With sticky mitts and great goal sense he is sure to give opposition clubs plenty of headaches. Last week’s player auction results are as follows. C Grade Georgina Drew, B Grade Keely Price, A Grade Lily Scott, Reserves Nathan Trotto and Seniors Tom Marriott. Hope this makes some readers happy. Social News Tonight we are hosting The Big Celebrity Sports Night. It is sure to be a great night for all attending. If you are interested in going contact Rob van Rooy to see if there are any tickets left.

CLUB NOTES WARRAGUL It was welcome to the Maroons last week and it was welcome back to Brayden Fowler and Tom Muir for the first run in Gulls colours this year. We have missed a target up forward and Brayden certainly gives us that. We were keen to atone for last week and with some key inclusions that was much anticipated. The first half clearly set the Gulls up for a good win against Traralgon but the lads ran for 4 quarters which was pleasing. It was 6”6 apiece after half time and the standard was very good. Brayden Fowler celebrated his 5 goals on return and his Downtowner award was well deserved. Kim Drew took out the Railway award with Nate Paredes off to Frankies for a good feed. Tom Muir was very solid and will enjoy his Voyage Fitness award with Tyssen Morrow having a Maloneys Pizza. The reserves came up short last week after the Maroons started with 5 straight goals and an efficient start to lead by 31 points at the main break. We came back but couldn’t bridge the gap. We retain our spot in the five. Our best were Brad Nott, Daniel Giardina, Jack Deen, Tim Devine and Mick Lynn. The under 18s have had some good contests with Traralgon over the years and this was an anticipated clash with our lads sitting in 2nd spot. The visitors appeared more settled than our lads and inaccuracy in front of goal probably cost them but still ran out 20 points the better. Our better players courtesy of Warraview Joinery,
Our under 16s are new faces and will take some time to develop. Having said that the Maroons occupied equal bottom so a good showing was expected. The visitors came to play and our boys weren’t quite up to it but they will come good. Best were Connor Ives, Matt Pecoraro, Jake Kallady, Jai Serong, Tom Carpenter and Micah Williames. Our netballers came up against the strong Traralgon girls and it was left to our under 15s to fly the flag for the club with a thrilling 1 one win. Well done girls. It’s always a great thrill to see the past players in attendance at our games and they all enjoyed our win last week. Sadly there were no Traralgon players at the after match to say hello. This week it’s off over the hills to take on Leongatha who are also coming off a good win so a great

2018 TRFM GIPPSLAND LEAGUE RECORD
ASSOCIATION CHAMPIONSHIPS TRFM GIPPSLAND LEAGUE SIDES The Netball Victoria Association Championships will be entering its 19th year of competition in 2018. The competition provides more than 180 Victorian Associations the opportunity to compete in their regional qualifiers in 13/U, 15/U, 17/U, AA17/U and Open divisions. The Association Championships are a crucial part of the Netball Victoria pathway, with talent ID staff working to identify athletes, umpires and coaches at all tournament days.
Eastern Association Championships to be held – Sale Netball Association May 20th Due to low numbers registered and trialling in the 13s side the League is only able to field 1 team this year. The League still requires a coach for the 15 reserve side and team managers. Training will be for all teams at this stage Sunday 3.30pm at Breed Street, Traralgon
