LEAGUE WELCOME ROUND 7 UPDATE

Back after the break and what a fantastic weekend it was for the League at the Community Championships. Coming away with the three wins on the day was a great stepping stone to better things for our representative programs. A special mention to the Senior side who managed to bounce back from last years very disappointing showing to move back up the rankings. Harmit has been working with us since late last year to try and get the best program together for the players. Planning started way back at a meeting in the city last year to open the opportunity up to the best players who want to play for the League. I have received many calls and texts around clubs who didn't have representatives in the side. The League was always aiming to have 24 fully committed players for the entire program represent us on the day. A few late injuries saw some committed players ruled out however overall it was great to see 30-35 top line players really put up their hands for Interleague and the result on the day was a great boost for the process. Thanks to the clubs who

worked with us in preseason and the players who got

in contact with the League for their opportunity. It was

a big weekend for our netball representatives who

backed up on Saturday and Sunday for Association

Championships. All of our sides made finals on the day which is another great result for the League.

A special mention to all the volunteers who have

been amazing in their roles for the League so far

in 2018. A lot of work goes in each week to getting

the games on the ground and it is because of

the hardwork of these people that we are able to

have such successful programs. There are some people that try to make our jobs harder but when

we have the support and selfless offers of help from multiple volunteers we are able to offer the best

representative programs in Gippsland. Daniel Heathcote

Traralgon and Leongatha maintained their unbeaten runs with big wins, in Traralgon’s case a massive win. Stuart Anderson and Jacob Schuback were Sale’s best. Warragul thrashed Traralgon, the 69 point margin their biggest win over the Maroons for 24 years. Traralgon actually led by ten points at quarter time, but added 1 goal 10 after that as the Warragul side went on a spree, eleven players sharing their fourteen goals. 30 YEARS AGO … 4TH JUNE, 1988 With Warragul’s defeat at Bairnsdale, Traralgon’s unbeaten run saw them sit two games clear on top of the LVFL ladder. Bairnsdale jumped to an early lead with 5.4 in the opening term, while the Gulls were errant in front of goal with 1.8 for the quarter. The twenty point advantage was decisive as the Redlegs went on to win by 28 points. John Mulqueen and Wayne Royal were named as best for the winners. Traralgon won by exactly one hundred points over Churchill with some uncanny accuracy in front of goal. The Maroons, led by John Walsh’s five goals, kicked 26 goals from just 35 scoring shots, Mark Pearce and Russell Northe outstanding for Traralgon. Dean Starr was a shining light for Churchill with five of their nine goals. Sale kicked six goals to three in the final quarter against Maffra to come from behind and record a thrilling four point win, Shane Allman kicking five goals for the Eagles. Morwell and Leongatha went pretty much goal-for-goal with the Tigers prevailing by eight points, star Parrot goalkicker Glenn Thorson kicking six goals. Moe held out a gallant TTU final quarter rally to win by eleven points.

40 YEARS AGO … 13TH MAY, 1978 Yallourn/Yallourn North and Traralgon sat two games ahead of the pack after Round 7 games had been completed. The highlight of the round was undoubtedly the thrilling drawn match between Sale and Leongatha. Inaccuracy plagued Sale from the start, with 1.6 in the first quarter, Leongatha leading by fourteen points at half time. Sale hit back in the third term to take a nine point lead in to the three quarter time huddle. Leongatha stormed home with 6.3 to Sale’s 4.6 to tie the scores at the final siren. This is one of just two drawn games between the teams (the other in 2005).David Mason and Rob Foster were the best for Sale with Shane Loveless contributing six goals, while Leongatha was best served by Neville Stone and Trevor Hemming with Ross Winkler their main scorer with four goals. Morwell led a determined Maffra all day, but were never comfortable in winning by 16 points, Jim Rasmussen kicking seven goals for the Tigers. YYN took a 27 point lead in at the first break in a game they won against Warragul by 24, Ian Nethercote (YYN) and Graeme Cook (Warragul) named as their sides’ best. Moe caused the shock of the round when they inflicted Traralgon’s first defeat for the year. The lead swung back and forth through the afternoon, Traralgon leading at the first and third quarter breaks, then Moe coming home with four goals to one to take the match. David Heath, Reno Fusinato and Trevor Alexander led the way for the Lions. Bairnsdale had the bye.

In the last three years the six matches between the Magpies and Redlegs have seen five wins to the visitors and just one to the home team. The win was by Sale in the second half of the 2015 season, and was by a margin of only nine points. Both teams have made much improved starts to their season compared to recent years and this game could well be a pivotal moment for their year.

: Morwell 7 R.Taylor (1996) Notes : Morwell had two strong wins over Wonthaggi last year, coincidentally both by the same margin of 48 points. The Tigers have had the better of their duels since Wonthaggi returned to this competition in 2010 – they have met 18 times in that ensuing period with Morwell winning 11 and Wonthaggi seven of those games. Both teams have had difficulty so far this season despite showing signs that on any given day they are capable of matching it with top five sides.

Last year’s margins of victory for the Parrots were massive, however Drouin has taken huge steps this year and realistically could easily have a few more wins on the board. Leongatha will be looking to maintain their lofty standards, while Drouin will be intent on making them earn every score – this game will be much closer than most people think.

The Gulls haven’t won at Maffra since 1997. Allowing for 2000 to 2004 years when Warragul didn’t compete in this company, it means that they have returned empty handed from Maffra the last fifteen times they have travelled there. The closest they have come in that time was a 21 point loss in 2013. While Maffra is the undoubted pacesetter for 2018, the Gulls have shown that they are on the rise and will give the Eagles a solid workout.

CLUB NOTES BAIRNSDALE We are back on the road again to take on the Sale Magpies. So far this season the Football & Netball groups have done themselves, supporters and the club proud. Most of the boys and girls had a rest last week for the interleague round. Congratulations to both Nic Bulmer and Jackson Smith on their selection and performances last week in the Gippsland League under 18 team, both boys have had outstanding seasons so far and will be ones to watch this Saturday. Marto and his charges will be looking forward to hitting the field with what could be a different line up to round 6 as a few injured

have got a coach and crew together. They had their first hit out against Boisdale Briagalong last weekend, goodluck for the rest of their season. Thanks again to all who attended our Celebration of Women in Football & Netball, it was a fantastic function and amazing crowd. Don’t forget tonight we have our Cocktail Ball at the Bairnsdale Racing Club, so pop into the Sale rooms for a drink after the game and then head home for a great midyear function. CLUB NOTES WONTHAGGI After several days of wet weather and lots of rain, the ground and courts held up extremely well. Proving you don’t have to be in the Latrobe valley to have good playing arena’s. U16’s, Another big challenge, with the boys up against a team in 3rd spot. The game was great to watch, our boys being too strong in the end, and running away with a percentage boosting win, well done to all the coaching staff and volunteers involved with group of wonderful little guys. U18’s, Another hard day on the park for our lads today. The opposition had too many runners and goal kickers, just lining up inside the 50. We must stick together, but we must also start showing a bit of fight. It’s not going to be any easier as the season goes on. Listen to your coaches, there are doing a huge job. Reserves, What a difference a week makes. Going from being a team that leaves the work up to others, to a team prepared to work together and play as we knew they could. Very enjoyable to listen to the song afterwards. Fantastic to see that big broad grin on Tom’s face. I want to see more of it. Seniors, We almost got the chocolate’s. The opposition were not the team they used to be. But we unfortunately couldn’t knock em over at home. We need to sing the song today tho !! Congratulations to Stu and Tim on your work again. Wins are coming. A Grade, We got off to a great start from the first whistle. We just showed what this group

is capable of in what was a great team effort. Again we saw a very young side take to the court and the oldies of the team didn’t miss a beat. Awards Mitchell & Co- Alyce. Wonthaggi Club- Eva, Beanz- Courtney B. B Grade, What a great win against Sale!! Putting 4 strong quarters together as a team. You all worked hard and should be very proud of yourselves. Awards Wonthaggi Club- Bonny. Beanz- Nikki, And a happy 21st birthday to Nikki. C Grade, .. U17’s, We started off a little slow, but we always had control of the game. Such a versatile team, but still lots to work on. Awards to Ava S. and Bella A. U15’s, Another tough fight for the determined Under15 girls. They fought hard for the whole game against a very strong Sale team. U13’s.. Today we up against Morwell at home, lets extend a welcome to the tigers. Then send em home with their tail between their legs. GO POWER, you bloody bewdy.

CLUB NOTES MOE Round 6 vs Morwell First and foremost the club would like to pass on its condolences to Rick Galea, whose mother passed away during the week. All players sported black armbands as a show of respect to the family in what was a relatively successful day out at Morwell. Seniors

Was a very scrappy game with only fourteen goals kicked between the two sides for the entire day. With an overall dull feeling surrounding the contest, Moe were fortunate enough to find themselves four points ahead when the final siren sounded to secure an important victory. May have got out of jail with this one. Better players according to the radio crew were Mitchell Stanlake, James Blaser and Tommy Long.

MAJOR RAFFLE First prize $38K Audi! SEE A SENIOR FOOTBALL OR NETBALLER FOR A TICKET $50 a ticket, drawn after the last home game. 5 prizes up for grabs.

Reserves

Had another pleasing win with many contributors. The side now appears settled and is chock full of confidence as it heads into the break. After a sluggish start the Lions extended their lead throughout the match and found winners across the board. Best players were Aaron Wilson, Calvin Mathe, Chris Fry, Juzzi Morrow, Sam Cougle and a new and calm Sean Spiteri.

Under 18’s Maintained their strong start to the season with a win away from home. All players found plenty of the ball and showcased their skills to good effect. Best players were Josh Galea, Harry Pepper, Nathan Balfour, Kyle Jennings, Grady Cocksedge and Wade Anderson. Under 16’s

Were beaten by a better team in what was a match in which Morwell always seemed to have a three goal buffer that was always out of the Lions reach. Best players were Jess McGrath, Jacob Matthews, Tajh Eden, Luke Summersgill, Brandon Watson and Riley Moore. Netball

A Grade A dominate first quarter was wasted in the finish as Moe surrendered a thirteen goal lead to go down by four. After a pulsating start few could have foreseen the demise but as the annoying truism goes – it takes four good quarters to win against quality opposition.

B Grade In something of a coincidence, the three Travers girls all played in the same team, on a court located on Travers Street. B Grade held off a determined Morwell and edged in front by two at the final whistle. The side will face its greatest challenge in a fortnight when it comes up against Traralgon – the only other undefeated team in the competition. C Grade Were victorious in a hard fought contest, eventually doing enough to hold their opponents at bay with a 36-32 score line the end result. With five wins from the first six games the side has started the season on a positive note and will look to keep nothing up wins week by week. Best players were Beckea Jones and Bree Phoenix. Under 17’s Went down in a match that would have been billed as 50/50 going in. Momentum ebbed and flowed throughout the four quarters with Moe unfortunately in arrears 43 to 38 when the match concluded. Under 15’s Had a resounding victory to go into the break with a 4-2 record to their name. Moe asserted their dominance on the competition from the get-go, and found fluent ball movement in many passages of play. Under 13’s Had a nail bitting one goal win 27-28. In a pulsating finish, Moe found their noses in front at the most important time and celebrated their victory with a collective sigh of relief.

CLUB NOTES TRARALGON

TRARALGON Round 6 saw us welcome the Drouin FNC to Traralgon in perfect weather for footy. With our seniors struggling in recent weeks the boys were keen to get back on the winners list but knew they would have to be at their best to do so. Drouin served it up to us for 80% of the game and at the 10 minute mark of the last quarter we were still behind, then popped up Rohan Hildebrand with a couple of terrific goals and young Bailey Cameron went into the ruck which got us up and going and in the end we kicked 6 goals to 1 in the last quarter to run out winners by 12 points. Best players were Lee Stockdale, Adam Jeansch, Rohan Hildebrand and Bailey Cameron. The reserves are improving every week and went into the game with a few of our under 18’s topping us up due to Drouin not having a thirds side this season. It was a fast game and although the score blew out a little, it didn’t really reflect the quality of the game. The Drouin boys battled for the whole 80 minutes and never gave up which meant our lads had to stick to the structures and game plans put in place to get the result we were after. Better players were Michael Burge, Riley Loprese and our skipper for the day Stu Goddard. With a late start and their first win the week before, the under 16 boys were keen to show all at the club that they are capable of playing at this level and eager for another win. A fast start to 7 scoring shots for us to 3 for Drouin and this trend continued for the rest of the game. With their confidence growing throughout the game, the skills improved and they played an open hard running game of footy. The coaching staff are really developing these young footballers and we hope they continue to improve each game they play. Best players were L. D''Angelo, C. Doultree, K. Ruyters, J. Musgrove, R. Adams, H. Middleton WOW what an exciting A grade match for Caitlan Ponton’s 200th Senior Game! An already depleted Traralgon team took the court against our 2017 GF opposition Drouin, in what was expected to be a tight game. With only four regular A grade players on the court, Drouin used this to their advantage to get a 2 goal lead by quarter time. Maddi Stockdale succumbed to an ankle injury early in the second quarter and after an incorrect injury call, Traralgon was forced to play out the next goal with only 5 players on the court! Georgia Hutchinson moved to GA and Bec Duddington took the court in WA, so Drouin gained another couple of goals while Traralgon adjusted. During the third quarter, Caitlan Ponton dislocated her finger and had to leave the court. With no bench and only 6 players on the court, three goals were scored before Caitlan was able to return. By the end of the quarter, Drouin’s lead had blown out to 6 goals but with strong leadership from the captain

Finally, congratulations to the following TFNC girls who gained selection in Gippsland League rep teams for Association Champs on Sunday 20 May: U13 Championship – Amali Adams, Emma Farley & Emily Neocleous, U17 Championship – Heidi Gaudion & Chelsea Livingstone, U17 Reserve – Saskia Eenjes, Trax Hanratty & Milan Maaka. Round 7 sees us travelling to Moe to take on a club that is above us on the ladder in every grade of football. This will be a great test for our boys and 4 fantastic games of footy are pretty much guaranteed. We wish all players the best of luck this weekend. Don’t forget our Mid-Season ball is on tonight and we would love to see as many of our supporters, sponsors, members and players there to have what will be a fantastic night. Still tickets available from the club so if you haven’t got yours yet, give Jo a call on 0429 371 614 Go Maroons.

CLUB NOTES

The Reserves game was a bit one sided with Traralgon playing many of their under 18’s. Traralgon dominated the game despite our boys trying hard. We will be stronger for the next few games with the return of several players. The Maroons sustained their pressure for four quarters and ran out very comfortable winners. Best players were: Kurtis Harper ( Select Office Award) , Tyson Buckingham ( Middels), Owen Walsh (Drouin Gourmet Café) , Rowan Drake (Family Hotel) and Sam Rippon ( Community Bank). Our young under 16 side had a good game against the talented Maroons. There were many passages of positive play against a quality opposition. We were right in the game till half time until Traralgon had a 6 goal third quarter. To our credit we outscored the Maroons in the last quarter with our players fighting it out to the end. We are seeing some of our players really growing in confidence and showing improvement. Best players were: Shaun Custance (Select Office Award), Logan Corbet (Intersport) , Fletcher Robertson Edgar (Intersport ) , Bailey Prior (Community Bank ), Angus Hales (Community Bank) and Che Dalton Ingham ( Jakk’s Pizza).

LL

In the seniors we started well and had a three goal lead at quarter time. In the second term with the breeze Traralgon narrowed the lead to three points. We again dominated in the third quarter to build a 19 point lead only to see the Maroons come home strongly to win by two goals. It was great game and we just need to take our chances in these tight games. Best players were: Eddie Morris (Barry Plant Award), Bob McCallum (Middels ) ,James McKellar (Family Hotel ), Tom Barr (Kim’s Kitchen ) and Cameron Jolly (Steam and Riddles).

F OOTBA

We again travelled east this time to Traralgon last week for the clash against Maroons. The games were surprisingly played in very good weather. Traralgon showed despite recent losses that they are a strong club and are playing good football in all grades.

He helps in any way he can whether it is at training, on the gate, working behind the bar or organising maintenance around the club. Graeme is the major organiser of tonight’s 1978 Premiers Reunion. CLUB NOTES LEONGATHA Last week we had the week off as some of our footballers and netballers were on higher duties representing the Gippsland League at Moe against the Murray League. Well done to all who played, special mentions to Cade Maskell who captained the senior football side and Cam Olden who was named BOG in the U18 game. Our last game was at home against Warragul and again we had ripper day despite the forecast. The junior footballers set the tone of the day. The U16s put in a really polished performance and are building into the season nicely. The game was failrly tight all day but the Parrot lads steadied late and kicked the last couple to come away the winners. The U18s put in an outstanding display team football. Their skills were excellent and they ran and carried the ball with purpose. The Reserves was a hotly contested game where again we were down early. The lads regathered after quarter time and got the game back on their terms. Then played probably their most consistent half of footy in the second half to have a good win. The Senior game saw our second big recruit in as many weeks take the field. Julian Lockwood made his debut for the Parrots and gave us plenty to look forward to for the rest of the year. After a scrappy first quarter where Warragul held the upper hand the Parrots went nuts in the second term kicking 9 goals to nil. From there on it was the Parrots all the way. It was great to have ex Australian cricket coach Darren Lehmann in the crowd during the footy. He really enjoyed the atmosphere of the game and had a few beers on the hill with the reserves lads. The netball had some mixed results. The juniors had the better of their counterparts and played very well. The girls should be really proud of their efforts as they are improving every week. The senior girls found things much harder with the Gulls showing

38

they are much improved on the last few seasons. Both C&B lost their respective games but A grade were able to get up. This was a great effort as it really paid tribute to Kasie Rump (Salmon), one of our clubs great players in her 200th A grade game. Last week’s player auction results are as follows. C Grade Tegan Renden, B Grade Alicia Garnham, A Grade Taylah Brown, Reserves Justin Pellicano and Seniors Julian Lockwood. Hope this makes some readers happy. Social News After the Warragul game we held The Big Celebrity Sports Night. It was a great night with Jarryd Roughead, Damien Fleming, Darren Lehmann and Stephen Milne putting on a great show. A huge thankyou to all those that helped put the night together. Our next home game against Bairnsdale will be followed by the French Open night.

Go Parrots!

CLUB NOTES MAFFRA It would have been a previous inception of the league when Maffra and Bairnsdale last occupied the first three on the table. More contested than just scoring opportunities in the senior’s, Sam Pleming and Jarryd Clohesy limited Bairnsdale's chances - Pleming's bodywork in marking duels is a great strength, helped by midfield pressure from Alex and Ed Carr and Danny Butcher's courage, while Lachy Channing has friend and foe's respect. The ball moved in circles between respective defences - we had more chances but were always under pressure. CLUB NOTES WARRAGUL The trip to Leongatha hasn’t been a happy one for the Gulls of recent times however we were coming off a stirring win over the Maroons so a good showing was anticipated. The first quarter showed some promise with us outpointing the locals but we were bought back to earth by an 11 goal barrage from the Parrots which knocked the stuffing right out of us. Their run and carry was awesome and they found many avenues to goal with 11 players sharing the goal kicking. What a frustration for our coach after the week prior. We did have some shining lights though with Kim Drew taking out the Downtowner award. Tyssen Morrow will dine at the Railway after another good effort and Jake Hughes was back to his best courtesy of Frankies. Angus Emery battled hard and Tom Muir

The 16s have been improving along the way and started well against the better positioned Parrots and at the main change there was only 7 points in it which was back to 2 points at the last change. The local lads went on to win but it was a good effort

This wasn’t headed and the Parrots were on the way to a clean sweep. Will Gown was the Warraview Joinery best on with Thomas Baum off to Sharkeys for a quick trim. Bailey

Our netballers had a good day with the A grade side missing out narrowly in a great match. Our B and C grades both had solid wins so the girls hard work continues to pay off. So, after the week off we venture to Maffra this week to take the ladder leaders in what should be
