Round 8 – Saturday 2nd June

TRARALGON V MAFFRA

PAST ROUND 8's By Paul Carter

5 YEARS AGO … 8TH JUNE, 2013 For the second week in a row the winless, and luckless, Moe came close to scoring their first win of the season. After going down to Warragul in Round 7 by just two points, the Lions led Leongatha at half time, then trailed by less than a goal at the final change-over. Moe ran out of puff in the final term, the Parrots, led by Cade Maskell’s five goals, maintained contact with the top five with a twelve point win. At home, Wonthaggi’s strong second half gained them the points against Maffra. Dom O’Connor was best for the Power with five goals as they turned a narrow half time lead into a 38 point win. Sale was too strong for Drouin, Ryan Pendlebury, a springboard off half back, and Mitch Davis (5 goals) provided a strong marking target in the forward line. James Gibbs kicked seven goals for Bairnsdale in their 41 point win over Warragul. While the Gulls’ Chris Carey dominated the ruck duels, Bayden Ashwood controlled the ball at ground level. On the Sunday, Brendan Fevola displayed his undoubted goalkicking talents in his one-off appearance for Traralgon against arch-rival Morwell. Fevola kicked six of the Maroons’ twelve goals, but the Tigers prevailed, Jeff Ryan best afield on-ball for Morwell and Julian Blackford and Jack Brown winners in defence.

McKenna’s 11 goals was just one goal short of the most ever kicked by an individual against the Eagles. Morwell got home in a thriller against the previously unbeaten Sale. Mannon Johnston and “Jock” Macfarlane stacked up the possessions for Morwell with Ryan Allan (5 goals) on target. Rodney Love and Brenton Martin (5 goals) were named as best for the Magpies. The third upset was Drouin leading from start to finish against Moe. It was just Drouin’s second win for the year to date against the third placed Lions. Todd Cook and Bob McCallum were best for the Hawks with Troy Makepeace and Chris Smogavec best for Moe. The only game that went according to “script” was Warragul’s solid win over Leongatha. Desi Barr was in stellar form in the centre for Warragul, with Nathan Lieshout showing strength up forward with four goals. Traralgon had the bye.

30 YEARS AGO … 11TH JUNE, 1988 Traralgon’s unbeaten run continued with a hard fought win over Warragul. Just three points separated the two at half time, but the third quarter, where the Maroons added three unanswered goals, proved to be a decisive break in a low scoring affair. Mark Pearce and John Walsh were named as the best for the winner. Bairnsdale maintained contact with the top four with a good win at Leongatha, just their fifth win there from twenty trips. Once again it was the third quarter where the game was won as the Redlegs kicked five goals to one after leading at half time by ten points. Brothers Bruce and David Cowell led the way for Bairnsdale. Accuracy versus inaccuracy was the theme at Moe as the home side, with 19 scoring shots to Sale’s 15, went down by 36 points. Sale’s Brendan Hogan was best afield and capped his day with four goals. Maffra looked in trouble at home against Churchill when they trailed by 14 points at the final change, but they rallied to kick 9.4 to nothing to storm to victory. Darren Bennett and Anthony Gravener were the best for the Eagles. Morwell led comfortably against TTU at half time, then put the issue beyond doubt with ten third quarter goals on their way to a 97 point win, Peter Henderson their best with five goals.

Yallourn/Yallourn North and Traralgon maintained their two game break on the pack to head the LVFL ladder. YYN started with a three goal lead over Maffra, then both teams added seven goals in a hectic second term, but the Blues came out after the half time break to add a further seven goals in each of the final two terms to run away with an 86 point victory. Mike Lovison was the best for the Blues with his eight goals. Traralgon and Warragul combined for a massive 46 goals, Traralgon coming from 38 points down at half time to win by 19 points. The Gulls opened with 6.2 to 4.3 and then added a further nine goals to Traralgon’s four. Then it was Traralgon’s turn as they kicked 9.5 to 2.1 to hit the front, adding another seven goals to five in the final term. Allan Lowe was in superb form for Traralgon with 11 goals, John Gallus named as Warragul’s best with five goals. Warragul’s score of 22.5.137 remains the Gulls’ highest losing score of all time. Sale also recovered from a huge half time deficit of 60 points against Bairnsdale. The Magpies kicked seven goals in the third quarter, but it wasn’t until well into the last, where they kicked another nine goals, that they overran the Redlegs. Stan Davidson was in brilliant form in the midfield and Shane Loveless capped off the good work with seven goals. Leongatha was the third team from the four games to come from behind to win when they kicked eight goals to Moe’s one to keep their hold on third place on the ladder. Neville Stone was named as best for the Parrots. Morwell had the bye.

This is just the third time that the Lions have won both games against Wonthaggi in the one year, the other two years being 1998 and 2010. Wonthaggi’s loss to Morwell last Saturday has them in the unfamiliar position at the foot of the ladder, a place they haven’t occupied since Round 1, 2014. Moe are intent on giving themselves the double chance this year, meaning that this game, on their home turf, is a “must win” game.

As we approach the half way mark of the season, a point at

20

which each teams has played every other one, teams will take stock of what has transpired in the first half and what they need to do from that point onwards. The Redlegs surprised followers of the Gippsland League when, in 2013 and 2014, they travelled to Leongatha and returned home with the points, their first wins at that venue since 1984. Fans of both teams will be highly entertained as both teams leave nothing to chance and go hard from first bounce to last.

Sale has put the poor first half of seasons behind them this year to at this stage being the season’s big improver. Warragul, likewise, is improving, but has suffered with inconsistency, copping some heavy defeats, already one expensive one (Drouin in Round 4) and mixing that with a great home ground win over Traralgon. The Gulls will really need to be on their game this afternoon – a win over Sale will do wonders for them, while a defeat may see a gap begin to open between themselves and the top bracket.

CLUB NOTES MOE Round 7 vs Traralgon A great day weather wise greeted all players and spectators at Ted Summerton Reserve last Saturday, as the Lions took on their traditional Traralgon rival. There were some great victories secured across the board which puts most teams in a strong position as we move into the winter months. Football Seniors Were beaten by a better team on the day. After a virtual arm wrestle for 70% of the game, Traralgon were able to extend their three quarter time lead in the final stanza to pull away to a comfortable win. On a day that proved difficult to score for those wearing maroon and blue, better payers were Tom Long who took a number of decisive grabs, Jacob Wood who was industrious as always, Peter Ainsworth who kicked three goals on this round twenty years ago, youngster Grady Cocksedge, Rylan Henkel on debut and the man who never plays a bad game Joel Bragagnolo. Reserves Had another fantastic win with every player doing their job to keep their rollicking season going. After a slow start, Moe worked themselves into the contest and were able to capitalise on some ill-discipline from their counterparts to eventually win by two goals. Best players were Hayden Prestidge, who kicked a ridiculous dribble goal from the boundary, the man known as Snoop Josh Wilson, the talkative Aaron Wilson, along with the taller brigade of Sam Cougle, Ryan Farmer and James Heslop who all performed well. Under 18’s Overcame an indifferent start to eventually take the game away from Traralgon. Once Moe adjusted to the conditions they were able to play a good brand of team orientated football to notch their best win for the season. Best players were Ben Maslen, who used the ball to good effect, Zack Skinner who was busy around the ground, Josh Galea who is having a very consistent season, Caleb Michie who patrolled the troops across half back, Leo Connolly who does what is required and Wade Anderson who has become the master of the spearing floater. Under 16’s Secured probably their best win for the season, putting together a proud effort to get them over the line. In a heated contest, the Lions were able to hold their nerve with a few death defying moments late to get back on the winners list. Best players were Matt Heywood, Jess McGrath, Lachlan Rock, Tajh Eden, Matthew Neal and the man who embodies all that is great about the long sleeve Riley Pearce. Netball A Grade Had their best win for some time, upstaging the reigning premiers to win 60 to 49. The Lions played a close checking game in defence whilst also spreading well when going forward to give themselves ample opportunity to impact the scoreboard. In the lead-up coach Peter Moody had stated

MAJOR RAFFLE First prize $38K Audi! Best players were Shannon Freeman and Bella Hodgson. B Grade In the top-of-the-table clash, Moe were unable to respond to the Traralgon challenge, going down 32 to 56. Coach Krissy Travers had been eyeing this match off for some weeks as her side’s real test, but unfortunately a reality check ensued. Best players on the day were Carly Mullen-Bianconi and Rachel Shaw. C Grade Went down 24 to 30 in what was a pretty good game for the most part. The Lions went head to head with Traralgon throughout the contest but were unable to find themselves in front when it counted. Best were Beckea Jones and Cheree Carney. 17’s Had a great 44 to 31 win, with all players contributing. Moe were able to exert their dominance on the contest throughout the four quarters to ease to victory in the finish. Best were Carlize Bird and Tayla Summersgill who was the recipient of the coaches award. 15’s Had a convincing 53 to 21 win, to continue their promising season. As everyone at Moe will tell you - any win against Traralgon is a good win. Best players for the Lions were Lacey Pederson and Destiny Macrell. 13’s Played out a nail-bitter, which heartbreakingly went the way of the opposition with the final score being 22 to 25. On a day where neither team deserved to lose, Moe were on the wrong end of the bargain this time around. Best were Olivia Rock and Hayley Koot.

Round 7 saw us travel to Moe in perfect weather for footy. The under 16’s started the day off in what proved to be a very entertaining match. CLUB NOTES MAFFRA What a final quarter- 15 goals of freewheeling footy! Warragul kicked four, but then became defensive as James Huts gave us first use. Diminutive Daniel O'Brien read the play best and continued to pepper the ball forward, Kade Renooy got his goals in pairs when it mattered then eventually iced the cake for six. Daniel Bedggood, battled through to notch up seven. Kel Porter burst tackles or outran his opponents and Winston Gieschen mopped up the spillage. A spirited match from both teams. The Ressies’ formidable force rolls along. Jesse Ross, Jim Reeves, Mitch Dignan and Bill Pleming await their chance in the ones and Ben Batalha, Matt Lee and Sam Bedggood showed they could still do it. The thirds let themselves down when they came forward, eventually breaking their team effort. Tom Bradshaw, an exciting talent, influenced the action. Josh Edey, Joe Zino, Rick Howard, Max Gravener and Jack Ronalds - all pacey young men bound to be future club contributors. The best game was the U16s - these blokes gave

and backed up for another awesome performance. In B grade, we couldn’t quite get over the line, and this time were on the wrong end of the same six goal margin. A newly engaged Renee Potts (congrats Renee and Jack) and Chloe Orchard put up a hell of a fight in defence, and stemmed the Gulls’ goal flow. Continuing their great form, C grade tucked another win under their belt. Nikita Callahan and Myah Proud kept the ball controlled in midcourt, cementing the win. CLUB NOTES WARRAGUL The youngest of the Gulls got proceedings underway last week at Maffra on a nice clear day. These two sides had a win apiece going into this and our lads had shown some improvement of late. After an even first quarter our lads went into the main break with a handy 11 point lead. After that the locals had plenty of the ball and many shots that were wayward adding 1 goal 6 to their score. The exciting last quarter took the game down to the wire with the Gulls edging out the home side by a solitary point. Well done to both sides. Jake Kallady continued his good form talking out the Warraview Joinery award. Matt Boyles and Connor Ives are regulars to feature along with Charlie Stern, Harry Notman and Beau Cusden. Under 18s. The under 18s have been playing good footy of late and their skills improve each week. They romped away to a good solid win over Maffra by 47 points. Fraser Phillips was our best contributing 3 goals. Sam Fennel was very good taking out the Voyage award. Cooper Robbis is having a great year and is off to Sharkeys for a trim and will be joined by Josh Notman. Will Pyle gets the McCafe and Bailey Quaife rounds out the awards. Reserves. With a player shortage due to injury the Reserves were a few numbers short but it wasn’t a great performance against a good even Maffra side. The locals ran out big winners. Brad Nott seems to have forgotten his age taking out the coveted Downtowner award. Hayden Lawson-Pepper played well and is off to Frankies while Leigh Sheehan took out the Waterwise prize. Jake Orlicki will enjoy his Maloneys Pizza if his old man doesn’t beat him to it. Sam Serramondi will do some weights at Voyage. Seniors.

After a belting at Parrot Park and then the week off our senior side were keen to make a statement despite some players out injured. Skidda was reasonably happy with the effort up to half time as we were only 30 points down at the main break and even at the last change just asked the Gulls to win the quarter. Unfortunately Maffra wasn’t content with the score line up until then and stormed the goals at will. Jake Hughes had a tough ask but did a ripping job. Kim Drew took out the Railway award and was busy all day. Nick Mulquuen is in top form as is Tom Muir . Jack Deen was back in and really stood up in a tough day for defenders. Netball. Our netballers continue to improve after their hard work. Last week they missed out narrowly in A grade and had a great 6 goal win in B grade. The other grades did well without recording wins. Next. This week we play host to the Sale Maggies who are coming off a win so it’s time to get back on the winners list. Go Gulls

CLUB NOTES

SALE FO

Our local heroes this week are Kelly Hudson and Debbie Krusic for the lovely president lunches at every home game, and Nathan and Sam Maxfield, and Simon Turnbull for our successful Auskick on Friday nights. Big thank you to you all. Our U16’s came out firing against an undefeated Bairnsdale and proved they can play with the best this season. Unfortunately, the boys got over run after leading at 3/4 time with final scores Sale 4.5-29 to 5.7-37. Best- M.Benson, L.Sutherland, J.Hutchins, A.Lowe and H.Pearce. The thirds boys just like the fourths came up against an undefeated side, and a tough game endured with our boys not taking a backwards step. After a promising start to the game the boys battled all the way to end but went down 6.3-39 to 14.12-96. Best- J.McLaren, D,Barnett, D.Sclater, T.Stephensen, and Z.Hider. The Reserves boys were up early, and a core group trained in the frost before the other games started. Well done to those who are putting in the hard work, showing commitment to improve and to the club. Our senior boys came out strong, only for Bairnsdale to fight back and give a scare to the Sale camp in the third quarter. Our big man in the middle Jack Lipman was our best on field for the day and was also sporting the best fake tan to match as he was keeping his best efforts for our Ladies night that was held on Saturday night. Final scores, Sale 16.9-105 to 10.13-73. Other best players were Big Jumbo Dessent, Z.Hurley, A.Wallace and A.Quirk. Another great day on the netball courts last weekend with the girls coming away with 4 wins from 6. Our under 17 girls were unlucky in their one point loss in the game of the day. In a high
