MORWELL V TRARALGON STANISTREET HUNTER CUP This Saturday marks the 201st time that Morwell and Traralgon have faced off on the senior football field. The two clubs have come together and decided to compete for a perpetual cup to be awarded to the victor of the senior match. This week’s senior football game between Morwell and Traralgon will be played for the Stanistreet Hunter Cup, named after former club greats and TRFM Gippsland League Life Members Brett Stanistreet (Morwell) and Terry Hunter (Traralgon). Hunter is one of the Leagues greatest players with multiple premierships and the 1966 Trood Award/ Rodda Medal to his name. Stanistreet is Morwell’s senior games record holder (312) and the only person to play 300 games for the club. He also won a record 6 senior best and fairest awards (now known as the Brett Stanistreet Medal), played in 3 senior premiership sides (coach of 1 and captain of all 3) and is widely regarded as the club’s best ever player. In 2017 the two clubs came together to form the Morgan Hunter Cup. Subsequent to this Stan Morgan, who was the Morwell nominee, did not feel

comfortable having his name attached to the cup as he believed it must be named after a player rather than an administrator. This is typical of the selfless manner in which Stan has always carried himself. Morwell had initially nominated Stan Morgan in recognition of his enormous contribution to the club over more than 40 years. Stan is undoubtedly the greatest volunteer in the history of the Morwell Football Netball Club and likely forever will be. Just one of the many contributions he has made includes administrating the club bingo since the early 1980’s, a fundraising venture that has raised net funds in excess of $1m. When it came to deciding which former player would have their name attached to the cup there was a very obvious candidate – Brett Stanistreet. This Saturday’s game, to be hosted by Morwell, will be played for the Stanistreet Hunter cup.

Terry Hunter (Left) and Stan Morgan (right) pose with the Gippsland League senior premiership cup in 2017 on the eve of the 200th clash between Traralgon and Morwell.

5 YEARS AGO … 15TH JUNE, 2013 Sale inflicted Morwell’s first loss of the season, ending the Tigers’ best start to a season since 1983. After trailing narrowly at quarter time, Sale’s second term of 6.4 to 1.1 swung the match their way, the second half a fairly even affair. While there were no outstanding goalkicking feats, youngsters Josh Dunkley (Sale) and Ben Ainsworth (Morwell) showed their prodigious talent. Maffra got a three goal break early on Warragul, a margin that was maintained until the final siren. James Hammill led a solid Eagles’ defence, while Chris Carey (Warragul) stood out in the ruck. Drouin’s poor first half saw them trail Wonthaggi by 44 points at the half time break. The Hawks fought back in the second half, but could only marginally reduce the deficit, Earl Shaw (Wonthaggi) and Darcy Irwin (Drouin) named as their sides’ best. Traralgon was too good for Leongatha, although the Parrots would have made more of a game of it had they been on target when shooting for goal. Tim Northe and Josh Jennings were on top in the midfield for Traralgon, while Cade Maskell was the Parrots’ best and capped his game with four goals. Bairnsdale did what it had to do to beat the winless Moe, turning a slight deficit at quarter time into a 22 point half time lead, the Lions never able to bridge the gap.

game in their keeping at half time when they led Traralgon by 37 points. The Maroons are never beaten until the final siren, and proved this with a third quarter which yielded 7.2 to 2.1, just one straight kick separating the two. The final quarter was a thriller, the scores tight until Maffra kicked the final three goals of the match to win by that margin. Nick Hider and Kel Porter were brilliant in the middle for Maffra. Michael Burge was busy across half forward for Traralgon with big Tim Aitken leading the way for the Maroons with six goals. Warragul had the bye.

40 YEARS AGO … MON., 5TH JUNE, 1978

30 YEARS AGO … 18TH JUNE, 1988 Morwell cemented their second placing on the LVFL ladder with an eleven point win over third placed Sale. The Tigers had looked home and hosed when they kicked six goals to one in the third quarter to lead by seven goals at the final change. Sale rallied and kept the Tigers goalless while adding 5.4, but they couldn’t make up the hefty deficit. Allan Lowe kicked six goals for Morwell with Kevin Smith being named as their best, Andrew Pollett continuing an excellent season for Sale. Moe was too strong for Churchill, winning by 78 points, with Leongatha enjoying a similar success against TTU. Just one point separated Maffra and Warragul at half time, the Eagles defence tightening to keep the Gulls to just one goal after that. Maffra coach Daryl Cunningham and ruckman Peter Geddes were best for the Eagles. At home, Bairnsdale very nearly caused Traralgon to have their first defeat of the season. Going into the final quarter, just four points down, the Redlegs kicked five goals, but couldn’t contain Traralgon who answered with six of their own, the final margin eleven points in Traralgon’s favour. Traralgon captain Ric Hoeben was their best with Rod White kicking six goals, while for Bairnsdale David Preston was outstanding with Stuart McLaren kicking eight goals.

Bairnsdale pulled off the surprise of the round when they, sitting 8th on the ladder, beat third placed Leongatha. After a closely fought first quarter, the Redlegs made their move in the second, kicking five goals to two The third quarter was notable for its complete lack of goals, Bairnsdale kicking 0.4 to Leongatha 0.5. Bairnsdale, with Laurie Haylock in good form and Murray Frew kicking four goals, won by 22 points. Warragul trounced Moe, the Gulls kicking eight goals in both the second and last quarters to win by over one hundred points. Tony Waters and best afield Graeme Cook each kicked six goals for the winner. The Traralgon v Maffra match was played at the Maryvale APM oval as this Winter, one of the wettest for that period, had made the Traralgon oval unplayable. The Maroons bombarded the goals and, fortunately for the Eagles, they were off target, scoring 16 goals from 42 scoring shots. Charlie Healey was at his best in the midfield for Traralgon, ably assisted by Tom Beveridge and Daryl Bird. Morwell was quickly out of the blocks against Sale with seven first quarter goals and were never headed. John Vickery was best afield for the Tigers, four goals from him and Carl Vesty leading their scoring. Shane Loveless was a bright light up forward for Sale with seven goals. Yallourn / Yallourn North had the bye.

In their first meeting at Maffra, Moe came from three goals down early to kick seven and then five goals in the middle terms to head the Eagles by 15 points going in to the final term, whereas later in the year Maffra led from the second term onwards before withstanding a gallant charge from Moe in the final term. Their 1st Semi-Final meeting was decided early when Maffra kept Moe to just two goals in the first half. Maffra has won the last thirteen games that they have played against Moe, the Lions not having beaten the Eagles since 2011.

: Leongatha 9 G.Thorson (1988) Notes : The ledger between these teams currently stands at 55 wins apiece with two matches drawn. The last ten matches between the Magpies and Parrots sees them having won five each, however Leongatha’s five wins have come from the last five meetings between the two. Sale’s hugely improved first half of the season has them firmly ensconced in the top three and today’s game, surely the Match of the Day, will have massive rewards for the winner as they become the legitimate contender for Maffra’s early flag favouritism.

The result of today’s match may well determine whether one of these teams is successful in bumping one of the teams above them from the top bracket.

Morwell v. Traralgon

Notes : These most traditional of rivals meet in a match that is important for both as Traralgon battles it out with the other contenders for the top Five and Morwell attempts to draw away from the bottom part of the ladder. Recent battles between the Tigers and the Maroons have been exciting. Since late 2014 they have met seven times for three wins apiece and last year’s drawn game, with the winning margin averaging just 18 points per game.

CLUB NOTES MAFFRA Last week, our senior stars were in the engineroom and defence - Mitch Bennett got four goals from limited opportunities, Danny Butcher loved the endless grind, Kel Porter gave as good as he got plus interest. Michael Coleman stood fast, under the ball, all day and Lachy Channing and Jarryd Clohesy did also. The team kept their form in tight circumstances. The Ressies took on a younger team that needed the experience that Ben Batalha displayed flawlessly, Bill Pleming controlled the ruck with good ground work also, Darcy Gray had more work than usual - enough to get into the best performers, Mitch Allman's stability makes a case for promotion and Jim Reeves again

CLUB NOTES MOE Round 8 vs Wonthaggi Another Jibba milestone was celebrated last week (well technically it’s a milestone every week), as the great man ran out for game number 350 in front of an adoring home crowd. With some vital points up for grabs, Moe had a decent day out and secured victories on both the field and court. Football Seniors With the side not functioning as well as the powers at be would have liked in the previous few weeks, the pressure was right on the Senior group to respond and prove their worth. From the word go the Lions exploded and before too long had piled on the first six goals of the match before the opposition had scored. It was inevitable that the match would tighten up, and for the second and third terms at least Moe were made to work hard for their possessions, before steadying to run out 52 point winners in the finish. Best players were Dylan Farrell, Jacob Wood, Mitchell Stanlake, Tommy Long, Joel Bragagnolo and Scott Van Dyk. Reserves Was a match that produced both positives and negatives. On a positive side the Reserves have already won as many games as they had in the previous season, but on a negative are still yet to put four good quarters together. After a strong first term, Moe fell asleep for two quarters before doing enough to hold off a gallant Wonthaggi by 33 points. Thanks to Kev Fleming for umpiring on short notice. Best players on the day were Jay Murphy, Ben Morrow, Clinton Rance, James Heslop, Josh Wilson and Chris McIntosh. The Reserves now face a huge week that will draw parallels to the famous Geelong/St Kilda game in 2009 when they take on Maffra next week. Two teams, both undefeated after eight rounds going at it for top spot. Players would be advised to prepare as if they were playing a final. Under 18’s Got the job done after an indifferent first quarter saw them going through the motions. From the first break however, Moe were able to control the contest and ran away with the match to sing the song for the seventh time this season. Best players were Sean Spiteri’s favourite human Ben Maslen, Josh Galea who still wears screw ins, Wade Anderson who is really tall, Trent Baldi who does what needs doing, Nathan Balfour who is leading from the front, and Jack Robinson who found plenty of leather. Under 16’s Without sounding too biased, were stiff to go down, with three posters virtually the main reason why Moe did not walk off the ground victorious. By sticking to a simpler game plan in recent weeks, the young Lions have been able to produce some good team football and were ultimately left to lament wasted opportunities in front of the big sticks. With the majority of player’s still down-age this season, a key imperative will be ensuring the boys learn and improve every week. Coach Craig Skinner could find no reason to be critical of his side in the wash up; it was just one of those games that could have gone either way. Best players were Jess McGrath, Tajh Eden, Luke Summersgill, Matt Devon, Hayden Molesworth and Jacob Matthews.

MAJOR RAFFLE First prize $38K Audi! SEE A SENIOR FOOTBALL OR NETBALLER FOR A TICKET $50 a ticket, drawn after the last home game. 5 prizes up for grabs.

Netball A Grade Won a pretty dour and low scoring affair 41 to 32, which keeps them in the mix. With the colder weather coming, matches between rounds seven and twelve are all about getting through games uninjured, with four points in the bank, ready to launch an assault in the lead up to finals. Best players for Moe were Jessica Nieuwenhuizen (Microsoft word offered no spelling suggestions for that one) and Shannon Freeman. B Grade After the game the press were able to catch up with victorious skipper and best on court Carly Mullen-Bianconi, who described the performance as ‘good’ without elaborating any further. When asked how much the side won by Mullen-Bianconi responded ‘by about nine’, the press then asked if a nine goal win was convincing in netball, to which Mullen-Bianconi responded ‘yes’. C Grade Are beginning to make a habit of close finishes, keeping supporters on edge to eventually hold on to win 38 to 35. With this in mind, the side should feel confident coming into every match that they can take on any opposition and give a good account of themselves. Best players were Ally Brown and Remi Edebohls. Under 17’s Went down against a strong Wonthaggi outfit, who completely outclassed the Lions in a dominant display. Provided the team learns something out of the performance not all will be lost. Best players on the day were Patty McInness and Charlize Bird. Under 15’s Had a strong win, easing away in the finish to boost their percentage. The match was virtually an extension of training, as Moe got the job done in clinical fashion. Best players were Laini Galea and Chelsea Law. Under 13’s Went down in another tight tussle 30 to 34, with momentum seesawing throughout the four quarters, Moe were unfortunately behind when the final whistle sounded. Best players were Erin Warner and Brandi King.

CLUB NOTES LEONGATHA It’s hard to imagine a better run of weather leading into the winter months. Last Saturday was yet again a magnificent day for competition. We faced off against Bairnsdale for the first time this year and fully expected to be tested across all grades. Starting with the football first this week we should mention that for the second time in 2 weeks we have had a senior debutant. Last week it was Jack Hume up from the U18s and this week it was our quiet achiever Nathan Trotto who came up from the 2s for his first taste of senior footy. The U16 game was a very highly skilled game with both sides having periods where they dominated the contest. The Bairnsdale team was undefeated on top of the ladder but our boys showed right from the outset that they would not be intimidated. As the visitors edged 4 goals up in the third stanza the big question was how would our lads react. They answered in fantastic fashion, taking the game on and working it back to a winnable position. It then came down to Kyle Eyers to live out every footballers dream, to have a shot to win the game with a couple of seconds left on the clock. He kicked truly and the Parrots pulled off a famous win. Then it was the U18s turn to test themselves against an undefeated opponent. With some U16 lads helping out to make up the numbers we looked to be up against it. From the outset you could tell our boys were up for a crack and at no stage did they let themselves be put on the back foot. Coach Garnham gave the lads plenty to work on at every change and the boys really responded. They continually beat their opponents to the ball and recorded a well earned victory. With no reserves game it was straight into the senior game. Bairnsdale worked hard and tried to

30

play on at all costs and this seemed to work into the Parrots game plan. We applied superior pressure and capitalised when we caused the turnover. In the end it was a good win for our boys. In the netball it was a really good day for our senior girls. They have been working really hard without getting the results. They were able to come away with wins in C, B and A grade, which really has energised the girls heading into the next part of the season. The 13s and 17s continued their great run of form but the 15s missed out. Auction players this week were C grade Georgie Drew. B grade Keely Price. A grade Lauren Redpath. Seniors Josh Hopkins. Social News We have 2 away games now so our next function will be after the Traralgon home game, a celebration of the World Cup!! Stay Tuned! Go Parrots!

CLUB NOTES WARRAGUL Vale Betty Nott. We respectfully mourn the passing of life member Betty Nott. Betty was a stalwart of the club and held in high esteem by all who knew her. Her husband Arthur was also a life member as are her son Anthony, daughter in law Ann and grandson Brad. A true family affair but that was what Betty was about. She was farewelled by family and friends at the club on Friday. Our love and condolences go to the entire family. Under 16s.

Our under 16s were hopeful of another solid performance but came up against a good Sale unit who played pretty attractive footy. Our better contributors were Matthew Pecoraro who deserved his Warraview award. In support was Jake Kallady who has been in great touch as well. Connor Ives has been a regular in the awards and Cooper Alger, Jai Serong and Brendan Coates were all prominent. Under 18s.

The under 18s have had some great tussles with their Sale counterparts over the last few seasons and this game didn’t disappoint either. The visitors held sway for most of the game but our lads fought out the game and outscored Sale in the last quarter eventually going down by 16 points. Our best were Bailey Quaife along with Sam Fennell who helped himself to 3 goals. Eddie McGillvray was dangerous again as were Will Gown, Ned Tworkowski and Connor Williamson. There’s plenty of potential among this side. Reserves.

The Gulls started off well against the Pies and played good attacking footy. They backed themselves and took a few risks with good dividends. The Warragul side lead at every change, played 4 quarters of footy and ran out good winners to the tune of 70 points.

however some the kicking was astray and we fell short by a bloody point. Our best were Nate Paredes who is a dynamo, Kim Drew who oozes class, Luke Di Ciero who is as hard as a wood peckers beak. Mitch Nobelius, Jedd Serong and the tireless Tom Muir were excellent all day. Brayden Fowler was great with his 4 goals. Netball. Great to see the A, B and C grade netball sides get up for good wins against the strong Sale girls. The other grades couldn’t quite manage a win but continue to work hard. Social. Don’t forget the mid season ball on June 16. It’s one of the great nights and is not be missed. The sportsmans night is booked out now so all that are going are assured of a top night.

Hayden Lawson-Pepper is the Downtowner best on ground in a great display. Scotty Kelly had his old man in the crowd so turned in another top game. Doc Larkin might be going a bit grey but still has a bit of spring left in him and Tim Davine, Ben Mackie as well as Lucas Monacella had good games.

Don’t forget your club merchandise always available from the committee.

Our seniors were up against second placed Sale who have been consistent this year. We always seem to do well against them at home and were hungry to atone for a couple of drubbings. There was nothing in the game in the first half with Sale going in 8 points up at the main break.

Gavie Ough has reportedly purchased the Premium Melbourne Football Club Grand Final package and booked the Grand Hyatt for the after party.

Seniors.

They came out full of fire and opened up a solid 22 point break and all appeared lost to some but not the Gull lads and a few can bar regulars. We staged a valiant comeback

34

Next. This week we’re off to Bairnsdale to take on the mighty Redlegs. Our reserves get a rest this week but will be there to show their support.

What month do the Demon supporters fill the Range Rover with anti freeze to head to the slopes again Gavie? Happy 21st Brad Hefford. You are a champ mate. Go Gulls

CLUB NOTES WONTHAGGI After a chilly start to the day, the sun came out and the conditions were perfect for a great day of football and netball at Moe. U16’s After a slow start, the boys kept working to task. They dug their heels in and came away with a hard fought out win, showing commitment, persistence and determination win through in the end. U18’s The 3rds game was a difficult assignment with Moe only losing 1 game this season. With no recognised ruckman, Ryan and Kurt battled manfully and gave our midfield an extra runner. Although the scoreboard showed a comfortable win to Moe, it was a far more even game in general, showing the improvement in the team from last year. Reserves The reserves competed well against quality opposition. Unfortunately for us, Moe ran away with it in the end. Great game to three of our 3rds boys, Kurt, Lochie and George who stepped up to play reserves. Seniors Moe started strong but it was mainly due to our turnovers that influenced the scoreboard. Unfortunately we lost 2 players which impacted our rotations, but the guys never gave up the fight. Thoughts with Curtis Gilmour who suffered a serious injury. Hope for a speedy recovery. A Grade We let Moe jump us taking the lead by 9. But to all the girls credit, we had an even 2nd half. Annabelle was back in form and Ellie worked tirelessly for 4 quarters, shooting with great accuracy. Big welcome to Olivia who has earned a spot permanently. Awards– Annabelle, Ellie, Alyce. B Grade

Playing 2nd placed Moe, we were up for the challenge. We are not far off the pace going down by 7. The effort and determination you all show is to be commended. Awards – Lily & Nikki C Grade Hard game today in warm conditions. All the girls played well. We were unlucky in the end with a few simple mistakes which saw us beaten 38-35. Awards– Lani, Zoe. U17’s After a close first half, we came out strong in the third quarter and started to take control of the game. We extended our lead in the last quarter and everyone had an impact on the game. Well done girls. Awards -Felicity & Alicia U15’s With 3 players missing we utilised our up and coming U13 players. Our girls tried hard all day but couldn’t match it with the Moe side. Credit to them all though as they never gave up. U13’s Fantastic four goal win for the 13’s. Great to see them keep their composure under pressure and put training into game play. Great work team. Awards – Imogen and Macy. GO POWER, you bloody bewdy.

CLUB NOTES

F OOTBA LL

It was good to be home again to play Morwell last week for the clash against Tigers. The weather was good despite being cold earlier in the day. Morwell were as keen as we were to get some wins on the board in all games. We shared the results but were disappointed not to win the senior game. In the senior game Brod Fraser celebrated a milestone playing his 100th senior game for the club. Congratulations to Brod on this outstanding personal milestone. In the seniors after an even first term we were able to build a 2 goal lead by half time. Injuries to coach Jordan Kingi and defender Sam Piner made the task harder in the second half but we still had a five point lead at three quarter time. The Tigers defended grimly in the last quarter and were able to run out 8 point winners. It was a good game and we just need to take our chances in these tight games. Best players were: Joe Collins (Barry Plant Award),Eddie Morris (Middels ) , Brendan Dower (Family Hotel ), Michael Laszcyk (Kim’s Kitchen ) and Tom Barr (Steam and Riddles). The Reserves game saw a strong win by the boys – the final margin was 23 points. It was a well deserved win and was celebrated well. The margin could have been more but it was a pleasing result to get this win on the board. The boys sustained their pressure for four quarters and ran out very comfortable winners. Best players were: Brendan Clark ( Select Office Award) , Nick Burr ( Middels), Jayden Fairlie (Drouin Gourmet Café) , Simon Gardiner (Family Hotel), Jye Mitchell ( Community Bank) and Will Collins (Jakks Pizza). Our young under 16 side had a good game against the talented young Tigers. There were many passages of positive play against a quality opposition. Morwell were able to put on scoreboard pressure early and their goals came easier than ours. As usual our boys fought out the contest to the end. Hopefully a win is not too far away. Best players were: Logan Corbett (Select Office Award), Lachlan Jagoe (Intersport) , Jack Fraser (Intersport ) , Tom Evans (Community Bank ), Jordan Murphy (Community Bank) and Jacob Sandman ( Jakk’s Pizza). Our Club person of the week is Keith Anderson who is a hard worker for our club. He helps his mate Keith Lewis to mark the ground for home games as well as being the key ticket seller for the Football Club raffle that is run at the Drouin Family Hotel each Friday night that raises funds for our club. Keith is also a helper with organising functions like reunions and our Auction Night. Keith has been a stalwart of our club over many years. He is an outstanding contributor to our club and is a huge asset to our club. We greatly value his contribution. We are looking forward to a home game after a few weeks away and with the return of quite a few players we are hoping for a good day today against Leongatha. CLUB NOTES TRARALGON

TRARALGON Round 8 and we welcomed Maffra to the home of the Maroons in what turned out to be a great day for footy and netball. The under 16’s started the day off and continued on their recent good form running out comfortable winners by 57 points Bets players were H. Middleton, L. D''Angelo, B. Porter, J. Musgrove, N. Fox and R. McDonald. For the second week in row the thirds game followed the same pattern as the under 16’s with our boys kicking 7 goals to 2 in the first half. It was a similar story in the second half and we went on to kick 14 goals for the game to run out winners by 62 points. Best players were T. Webster, B. Cheetham, L. Tripodi, P. Akram, K. Marsh, B. White With injuries a plenty on our senior list the reserves took on a very good Maffra team. Although undermanned from the start our boys worked hard all day and the end score didn’t reflect the quality of the game. Maffra winning by a comfortable 10 goals in the end. Better players on the day were M. Williams, J. Barnes, D. Barnes, J. Jackway, B. Marshall, W. Gaudion The senior side took on the league leaders and new they were in for a tough afternoon. In a tight contest there were only 16 shots on goal in the first half with our lads holding a 9-point lead at the long break. The third quarte was no different with neither side able to kick a goal, but Maffra had cut the deficit to 7 points. In a frantic last quarter, the battle continued, and it looked like we might have done enough to hand Maffra their first defeat of the year but with less than 10 minutes to go, our boys lost a little bit of shape and Maffra being the good side they are capitalised on this, kicked the last 2 goals for the game and came out with a hard fought 11 point win. Important we take some confidence from this game and build for the back half of the year. Best players were M. Mustoe, J. Hall, J. Vucenovic, A. Jaensch, M. Burge, T. Northe A Grade were back to good form with a solid win
