Welcome to Round 9 of the SEFNL Berwick Motor Group Premiership Season. While we had a break for the Queen’s Birthday weekend, the South East Juniors competed in the AFL Vic Metro Championships with U14 and U15 boys and U15 girls development teams and the AFL South East Region Junior Championships with the U13 Division 2, U16 and U17 development teams. Games were played on Wednesday night, Saturday, Sunday and Monday with mixed results all round, the real winner was kids having fun, having a chance to represent their league, play in a team with people who are normally their opposition and learn new skills. Remember in round 11 it is our White Ribbon Round. Did you know that the City of Casey has the highest rate of reported family violence in Victoria? This is 20% higher than the next area.

It’s in our community. Congratulations to Doveton for their ongoing work with the White Ribbon Foundation in raising awareness and educating people on the resources that are available to them. Please support this cause to help change the behaviours within our community. Just a reminder that football registrations close on June 30. With this in mind please contact us if you are interested in playing football in SEFNL. Further themed rounds coming up: • Round 11: 1st July – White Ribbon Round • Round 15: 29th July – Multicultural Round That’s all from the SEFNL desk this week, best of luck to all teams for this week!

AFL South East Senior Competition Review Draft Recommendations Released AFL South East Region Commission is calling for industry feedback after today releasing its Senior Football Competition Review Discussion Paper. The draft recommendations summarises feedback received by the review panel after undertaking individual consultation meetings with all senior clubs in the AFL South East region. Review panel chair and AFL South East Region General Manager John Anderson said that he was very pleased with the way the individual club consultations were conducted. “Clubs were open, honest and respectful during the process. The draft recommendations has been prepared to incorporate much of the feedback received and recorded during the consultation phase.” “It was encouraging to hear from a number of clubs during the consultation phase that the Commission should act in the best interests of football in the region.” “As a Region Commission we have a responsibility to grow and develop the game and it is imperative that any competition structure has the scope to achieve that,” Mr Anderson said. The draft recommendations provides two options for industry feedback: A full divisional structure initially comprising three divisions with promotion/relegation between each. A partial divisional structure also comprising three divisions, with a top division then two divisions below based on geography.

Mr Anderson said the Commission believes the two options are fair and will provide much needed divisional competition between clubs. “The options not only address the concerns raised by the majority of clubs but they also strike a balance with the competing issues specific to some clubs. “It is critical that local footy evolves to meet the challenges facing our region – this direction preserves our history and sets up our future.” “Of prime importance is the ability of our league to attract new clubs to participate in the competition,” he said. All clubs were asked about the impact on netball during the consultation and a section of the paper has been devoted to issues facing local netball. There was a common thread in the feedback of retaining football and netball together at home games. However, there were a number of issues raised which need to be addressed in the next phase of the review and allowance has been made in the response document for further feedback. The 14-page paper plus schedules will be sent directly to stakeholders, but will also be available on the AFL South East website, http://www.aflsoutheast.com.au/afl-south-eastsenior-competition-review In accordance with the Review’s Terms of Reference, clubs and other stakeholders have four weeks to respond to the options outlined in the paper. The review panel will consider the feedback before making a final recommendation to the Region Commission. Closing date for responses is Monday 3 July 2017.

Initial Vic Country Big-V Squads announced Worksafe AFL Victoria Country has released its initial senior and Energy Safe Under-19 representative squads ahead of its clash against the Victorian Amateur Football Association (VAFA) next month. Thirty-eight of Victoria’s best country senior players are in the running to don the Big V jumper when the pair meet their metro rivals in the 2017 Brian Molony Cup at Frankston City Oval on July 8. Eight different country football leagues are represented in the initial senior squad, with Ovens & Murray Football League (eight), Geelong Football League (eight), Mornington Peninsula Nepean Football League (five) and Ballarat Football League (five) boasting the most selections. Held biennially, the 2017 Brian Molony Cup is set to reignite one of the longest-standing rivalries in community football as the best from the bush take on the best from the burbs. Country Victoria’s top senior footballers will be led by former AFL player and coach and Bungaree Football Club product Danny Frawley, who took over the reins from Hawthorn legend Peter Knights last year. Defeating the VAFA by 62-points in the pair’s last meeting at Bendigo in 2015, Vic Country will be looking to extend its winning streak over their traditional rivals.

In addition, Vic Country’s next generation of community stars will have the chance to showcase their skills in the Under 19 Challenge Cup. Twelve different country football leagues have representatives included in the initial 53-player squad, with Ovens & Murray FL (11), Mornington Peninsula Nepean FL (10) and Geelong FL (nine) securing the most representatives. Victoria’s brightest young regional talent will once again be led by Yarrawonga co-coach Damien Sexton, who will suit up for his ninth season at the helm. The Energy Safe Victoria Country Under 19 squad has recorded emphatic victories in its last three encounters against VAFA, defeating their metro opponents by 44-points at Mernda Reserve last season. Both squads will conduct three training sessions in the lead up to their representative clashes, with the final squads to be trimmed to 22-players each. The Under 19 Challenge Cup will kick off at 11:30am as a curtain raiser to the 2017 Brian Molony Cup at 2:15pm at Frankston City Oval on Saturday July 8. Don’t Blink Twice…Or Else You Might Just Miss It… Occasionally...or just every so often what we call a miracle occurs. And guess what? Saw one last week…

seriously damn good looks while straddling that goal line and invading the tall slender goal post’s personal space.

Was having a bit of a wander around training the other night and out the corner of the eye something strange occurred. Not satisfied with the glimpse a full blown stop and head turn was required. There’s a lot of mythical creatures that society claims to have seen over the stretch of time. Unicorns…Yeti…Loch Ness Monster…An inviting Mother-In-Law. But never, no not once in ancient or modern history had there ever been a sighting quit like this…

Allegedly it’s been going on all year. That’s what the jungle drums say. Ask any goal umpire though and they reckon they’ve been genuinely training since the turn of time. Flag were first waved to signify goals in games back in 1887. Who in the world of common sense is going to believe they actually moved, yet alone ran, all the way back then?

On the SUA track, smack bang in the middle of Kananook Oval was a goal umpire. But not just any goal umpire. It was a goal umpire engaged in training. But there’s more…he wasn’t just stretching his index finger…or performing bicep curls under the weight of a hotdog or two. He was actually running. Exerting physical energy. Sprinting down the guts of the ground quicker than some of those so called freakfitness field umpires. But it doesn’t stop there either. He had mates… goal umpiring mates…a truck load of them. Enough to absolutely shatter any kind of sales record of a large hotdog company. And every single one of them sprinting the line (think that’s what it’s called), darting in and around agility poles to show off their discreet food platter snatching techniques and squats and lunges to ensure core strength to keep the lowest point of gravity for those ever so frequent (and hilarious) slips in the muddy goal squares. That all doesn’t even include the extensive skill drill regime to guarantee some

Still puzzled about the whole situation? Think this is just one of those folklore porkies that grows in dramatics around the warmth of a campfire while downing a soothing liquid and toasting marshmallows? Well it still might be… Mythical creatures aren’t real…Miracles don’t actually happen…Or do they? Note to all hotdog companies: If keen to boost sales to increase the bottom line for corporate management get down to the goal square of Kananook Oval on a Wednesday Night. DOVETON 8.7.55 LOST TO TOORADIN-DALMORE 12.14.86 Doveton had a lot to celebrate with club stalwart Ryan Hendy celebrating his 250th and it was the Doves who had an electric start to the match. First gamer Ricky Johnson kicked a brilliant goal which was backed up by big forward Milan Mandic who kicked the home side to an early lead. Tooradin never shirked the issue, and clawed their way back into the contest. The Seagulls kicking five of the next seven goals, restricting Doveton to only one goal in the second quarter to trail by only two points at the main change. Doveton weren’t at full strength, with eight changes from the previous week and it was starting to tell. Tooradin took control of the match in the third quarter, extending their lead to 21 points before Doveton’s spearhead Taylor Joyce hit the scoreboard late in the quarter to reduce the visitors lead to 15 points at the final change. Aisake O’Hailpin was relishing the fact that Rus Gabriel was sidelined, providing first use of the footy to the Seagulls midfield brigade Nick Lang, Andrew Proctor and Matt Livemore amongst their better players. Andrew Dean kicked the first goal of the last quarter and emotions where high after a solid bump by Lang saw the boys end up in a scuffle. Tooradin have been in these positions before and failed, Fabio Dilizia wasn’t going to allow it to happen again, his two last quarter goals, taking his match tally to 4 helping Tooradin to a memorable 31 point at AJ Robinson Reserve.

CRANBOURNE 21.10.136 DEF NARRE WARREN 12.12.84 The battle between two arch rivals took place at Casey Fields in tricky conditions. It was the visitors who got the jump early in the match kicking two quick goals to enjoy a 10 point lead. Cranbourne soon took control peppering the goal-face kicking five of the next 6 goals including two to talented big man Troy Tharle to allow the premiers to take a 12 point lead into quarter-time. Matt Fletcher got the second quarter rolling for the home-side kicking a brilliant goal on the run as Cranbourne had the momentum. Marc Holt imposed himself on the contest kicking the next three goals for Cranbourne, Scanlan was playing a lone hand up forward for the Magpies and his third for the match reduced the margin back to 18 points. Cranbourne were dominating, Zak Roscoe kicked his second and the margin was out beyond five goals before the visitors kicked two late goals in the quarter to have them trailing by 23 points at the main change. Hayden Stagg was playing a fantastic game, creating space and bringing his teammates into the contest after the break. Narre used the aid of the breeze to full advantage, three goals to one and the margin was reduced to 11 points. Holt kicked his fourth but Stagg responded straight away to give Narre Warren a sniff of victory with a quarter to go. Cranbourne Coach Simon Goosey asked his charges for one more 30 minute effort to ensure victory and to the Eagles credit they came out firing on all cylinders. Khaled Kandajki rose to the occasion scoring four last quarter goals as the Eagles romped Narre by kicking eight goals to one with the breeze in the final term to win by 52 points.

BERWICK 12.10.82 DEF OFFICER 9.5.59 Berwick lost some experience before the game with Micky Harold and hard-nut James Magner both missing due to injury, but it didn’t stop the Wickers flexing some muscle early on booting home the first four goals with ominous signs for the visitors who were looking to make it back on the winners list after their bye. Berwick’s strength is their ability to nullify their opponents foray forward with their tight defence on the half-back line. Michael Risely continues to make his job look easy, his positioning and early read of the play makes him hard to pass. Add Berwick’s outside run from the likes of Lucas Jellyman-Turner and Brodie Connelly they are hard to stop. To Officer’s credit they never dropped their heads, and worked hard to get themselves into the contest. The Kangaroos reduced the margin to three goals at the first change. Berwick again got the jump against Officer booting the first two goals of the quarter and it looked like they were going to run away with it. Officer continued to work hard with Dylan Chapman dominating the ruck and Brad Philipps playing well in a return to the senior line-up. The Roos booted the last two goals of the half to reduce the margin to 22 points. The hard work was rewarded in the third quarter, with the underdogs outscoring The Wickers booting three goals to one and reduced the margin to only 10 points with a quarter to go. Berwick where just to go in the last quarter Trent Thomas and Connelly combining for six in their 23 point win.

PAKENHAM 16.21.117 DEF HAMPTON PARK 3.3.21 The two winless teams faced-off for the first time but it was Pakenham who looked the better side early on. Stephen Morey was getting plenty of supply at centre half forward but couldn’t convert in front of goal and former Captain/Coach Steve O’Bryan was ensuring the Lions wouldn’t let their first chance of victory this season slip. The Lions could have sealed the match during the first quarter inaccurate kicking in front of goal only had them in front by 25 points at the break. The second quarter was when the Lions came to life. Experienced campaigners Dean Blake and Rus Lehmann where creative in the midfield, while livewire Jake Smith was hard to stop with three first half goals. Sam Blackwood was at his best across half-back while Chris Cardona is relishing his leadership role. Another six goals for the quarter while restricting to only 2 points in the first half was enough to sew this match up by the main change. The same brigade of young Redbacks continue to try hard but they don’t have the support to move the team forward. Smith finished the match with five goals, Morey and Jake Barclay contributed another 5 goals in the romp. With the margin out beyond 100 points nearing the end of the match, it was the matter of how far for the home-side. To the Redbacks credit they managed to outscore the Lions in the last quarter kicking two goals to one and reduced the deficit to 94 points. It’s the Redbacks second loss for the season under 100 points.

NARRE WARREN (4TH 4-3) V DOVETON (5TH 4-3)

PAKENHAM (8TH 1-6) V CRANBOURNE (2ND 6-1)

Last Time – Round 15 Doveton 10.7.67 def Narre Warren 5.9.39

Last Time – Round 10 Pakenham 10.10.70 lost to Cranbourne 17.10.112

Narre Warren welcome Doveton in what shapes as the match of the round. Both teams enter the contest after suffering loses, Narre went down to the premiers while Doveton had a shock loss at home against Tooradin. Narre are yet to play their football this season, suffering loses at home and against teams above them on the ladder. The powerhouse of the competition is slowly finding themselves back in the pack and desperate to hold onto their finals chances. Doveton need a change of luck, eight forced changes last week had the Doves on the back foot. Doveton are yet to find consistency with their football over four quarters, they have tested teams for long periods, but a small drop off opens the door of opportunity for their opposition to score. Both teams play a similar brand of football which is physical and combatant, the game will be won by which midfield can get on top which will go a long way for setting up the win. It will be interesting to see which team can supply their forwards with the most chances to score. Narre has the leading goal kicker in the competition with Nick Scanlan contributing 26 majors averaging close to 4 goals a match, while Doveton recruited Taylor Joyce to add some bite to their forward line and has booted 15 goals this season. Narre find themselves in a must-win game, a loss here will see them at risk of dropping out of the Top 5 in a few weeks. Doveton’s chances will be decided once again on the selection table and will be hopefully bolstered by the return of Rus Gabriel from injury and Coach Aaron Davey to return from an ankle injury. Doveton always save their best for Narre and will be looking to pull-out all the stops to get another win against their rivals. Narre will be desperate and can play their best footy with their backs to the wall, Narre to escape with a win by 11 points.

Pakenham will have restored confidence after recording their first win of the season against the bottom placed Hampton Park, which was a reward for their improved efforts over the past month. Pakenham have finally started to settle after their pre-season exodus and are starting to play a better brand of footy. The Lions will be tested again this week as they welcome the reigning premiers to the den. Cranbourne are getting better each week and have taken their game to new levels. The Eagles are dynamic and ruthless with their second halves of matches is when they put their opposition to the sword. Cranbourne have outscored their opponents nearly two goals to one in the third and fourth quarters. What makes Cranbourne so dominant is their versatility, Coach Simon Goosey has the ability to switch players around depending on team’s needs. The Eagles have a settled back six, but the rest can play in a variety of positions. One player relishing the opportunity in playing in a variety of roles is Shaun Marusic. The big bodied midfielder has found himself playing deep in defence or down forward when The Eagles are in need of a goal. Marusic is a talent and seems to have found confidence in his body to crash the packs and assert himself when required. Pakenham have their trusted brigade who are up for the fight, Sam Blackwood has confirmed himself as one of the premier defenders in the competition. Since his return from a serious knee injury last season he hasn’t put a foot wrong. Blackwood’s dash and clever decision making makes him a player to watch and a player the opposition coaches will be putting time into stop. Pakenham’s first year coach Ash Green may have to move the magnets this week to try and stop the dangerous Marc Holt. One of the best match-ups for Holt is Stephen Morey, Morey has been used as a forward this season but may have to start down back to re-acquaint himself with the Cranbourne captain. This match may not be as one-sided as it appears on paper but Cranbourne will be strong late and runaway with the win. Cranbourne by 76 points.

OFFICER (7TH 3-4) V BEACONSFIELD (3RD 4-3) Last Time – Round 18 Beaconsfield 4.6.30 lost to Officer 7.6.48 Officer caused one of the upsets of the season last year defeating Beaconsfield at home to end the home and away season. The Kangaroos are one of the most improved teams of Season 2017 and will need to apply their hardworking style again to compete against Beaconsfield. Beaconsfield should be well rested after the bye and the midseason break. The Eagles faced their own turmoil recently with the departure of two senior players but unlike last year Beaconsfield have improved their depth and will be able to cover them easily. Officer have been competitive in every match this season and will see them as a big chance to claim another scalp. Officer has seen improvement come from the fact they have an even spread of contributors rather than just a small group. Matty Clarke has really stepped up into his leadership role and has been crucial in front of goal when it matters. Clarke has always had the potential and under the guidance of first year coach Doug Koop has started to deliver. Beaconsfield have adopted a defensive mindset and their deep press has really restricted their opposition scoring potential. Beaconsfield’s youthful exuberance see their youngsters take the game on with plenty of dash and can often see them put pressure on their opposition with relentless pressure around the footy. A great match-up will be in the rucks, when Dylan Chapman takes on Scotty Meyer. Chapman has been a revelation since returning from injury and will be champing at the bit to take on Meyer. Meyer who by his own standards has had an indifferent start to his season but after the break should be charged to tackle the second half of the season. The winner of this contest will go a long way to setting up the win for their side. Officer’s midfield have a great ability at winning the clearances but Beaconsfield have their own players ready to attack the hardball. The game will be tight, but whichever teams brings grit and determination for four quarters will finish on top. Beacy to have the slight edge in class and get away with a tough win at Starling Road by 21 points.

TOORADIN-DALM0RE (6TH 3-4) V BERWICK (1ST 7-0) Last Time – Round 12 Berwick 12.23.101 def Tooradin 7.7.49 What a game this is shaping to be, a month ago you would have said it will be a one-sided contest and the ladder leaders will have full control. It just might not be the case this time around. Tooradin come into the contest on the back of a hard fought win away at Doveton. It was the second time they have beaten Doveton in 23 attempts. Tooradin have been one of the strongest recruiters over the past 18 months and it’s great to see the hard work off the field is starting to provide dividends on the field. Tooradin can be their own worst enemy at times, playing the role of both Jekyell and Hyde. The Seagulls can look like world beaters one minute then find themselves behind the eight ball in the next 10 minutes of play. Berwick on the other hand haven’t been truly tested this season. The Wickers are back to their dominating best, after eight rounds they are undefeated with an average winning margin of 50 points. Berwick have the inside grunt from players like Madi Andrews, Micky Harold and James Magner who are complimented by the outside of run of players like Luke Sheppard and Lucas Jellyman-Turner. The Wickers have stars on every line which makes them a formidable opponent to stop. Tooradin will need to be at their ultimate best for four quarters to ensure they are in the contest. Any drop of concentration will allow Berwick to storm right in and take control of the contest. Aisake O’Hailpin has changed the way Tooradin attack the game, he uses his physical prowess to the full advantage. O’Hailpin will set the tone for the rest of the Seagulls to follow. One chink in Berwick’s armour is having a quality tap ruckman, and O’Hailpin will look to expose their lack of size in the middle. Another Seagull who has been impressive is Nick Lang. Lang has grown taller after an impressive display at interleague level earlier in the season. Lang offers plenty, he is a gifted footballer who can use the ball well and hurt the opposition on the scoreboard. Both players will need to fire if the home-side is to cause an upset. Berwick will have too much class and work Tooradin into the ground. Berwick by 27 points.

Narre Under 19A lost a close one to Cranbourne, but our Twos had a six-point win despite our poor kicking for goal (6.16 to 7.4) nearly costing us the game. Narre’s Ones fought our way back to within a kick of the lead early in the last quarter, but Cranbourne withstood our best shot and pulled away for a solid win. Seniors – Narre got a slow start and worked hard for three quarters to stay in touch with Cranbourne. We seemed to have plenty of momentum and confidence as we drew to within a kick early in the last term, but inexplicably fell off the pace to let Cranbourne finish off with an 8-goal last quarter. ‘Disappointed’ seemed the best word to sum up the mood of the coaching staff, playing group and supporters after the match. Stewie Scanlon (4 goals) and Aaron Wilson (3) were among few winners on the day making the most of limited opportunities. Jack Soroczynski worked hard, while Josh Tonna and Nathan Allen can hold their heads up – but we had too few four-quarter contributors.

Losing 2 players for the game in first half and also having no interchange late wasn’t ideal but again happy with the win Cranbourne were strong & physical , so to see Ryan Quirk , Micky Milo & JB Faustian in our best players was promising. Still need to work harder with our delivery but going well Under 19 A – Narre 19A’s played a very good Cranny A’s side in what was a good, close game of footy. Our boys were a bit slow out of the blocks and trailed for most of the day , going down in the end by 7 points. Joel Zietsman was our clear best for the day with the back 6 and Tom Toner also playing good games.

Cranbourne fought back and took lead by 8 pts half way through final qtr

Under 19 B – Narre’s Under 19B were soundly outplayed by a bigger stronger side on Friday night at Beaconsfield. Our boys held their own in a competitive first term but Beaconsfield took control and ran away by 16 goals. As has been the case all season, these young men can be proud of their resilience and persistence under pressure. Our best were Rick Jenkin, Benny Kanka, Bailey Wardle, Adam Machnikowski and Kyle Contencin

So to get back even and “Bay Boy” Tonna kick a good goal with 1minute 50 seconds left , then defend to siren was pleasing.

Reserves - Narre Warren Reserves vs Cranbourne In the end a great win, played very well first half to have a 3 goal lead

Welcome back to football and netball after a weekend off for the Queen’s Birthday weekend. This week we host Beaconsfield for the Shanika’s Cup in the Bendigo Bank round. The Officer Football Netball Club would like to thank the Bendigo Bank for their valued and on-going support of local football and the many other sports and community activities sponsored by the Bank. Our Round 8 visit to Berwick saw us come away without the points in all three grades. In the Seniors we allowed Berwick to get off to a flying start but after the initial onslaught the Roos worked their way back into the game and kept pace with Berwick for the remainder of the game. The tightness of the contest put the Wickers off their game and caused them to make some uncharacteristic mistakes, but the early goals proved too much for the boys to

overcome. The improvement continues however and we’re looking forward to some more wins in the second half of the season. Good luck to all teams today. The Annual Reverse Draw with prize money totalling $10,000 is being held on Saturday 19 August commencing at 3pm with first tickets drawn at 4pm. Get your tickets from players or Committee members. The Annual Sponsors and Life members Lunch is being held on Saturday 15 July prior to the Tooradin home game.

This week we play Cranbourne at home and after a great win against Hampton Park before the Queens Birthday weekend and improved form leading into that game, it will be another test to see how much the team has improved. There have been some great signs from the Senior team that they are capable of matching it with the better sides of the competition, however the boys need to play out 4 quarters with the same intensity that they have shown in parts of our games.

BERWICK 56 DEF ROC 51 Berwick have been one of the most improved netball sides during the middle part of the season. Languishing on the bottom of the ladder until Round Six, two wins from three matches has the rejuvenated Wickers, who find themselves only one game out of the five. Coach Janine Kilmartin, never lost faith and has been prepared to give girls plenty of opportunities. Berwick definitely play well at home and they welcomed ROC who find themselves falling off the pace after showing some promising signs earlier in the season. Berwick took the game on and got to the front when it mattered most winning by 5 goals and moved the Wickers to sixth. There is a logjam at the bottom end of the table, with 10 games to go it’s going to be an interesting run into September for both sides. Berwick will be looking to carry their momentum throughout the season while ROC will need to be doing some soul searching to restore some confidence into their netball after losing their last four matches.

CRANBOURNE 44 LOST TO NARRE WARREN 46 The game of the round was played at Casey Fields with Cranbourne welcoming Narre Warren. The Eagles and the Magpies are destined to play finals and this was a preview for the finals. The conditions can always make it tricky but both teams seemed to handle the conditions well. Cranbourne have a strong defence but was always going to have their work cut out of for them as Gabby Dwyer from Narre Warren is one of if not the best shooters in the competition. The game was tight early with teams separated by only one goal. Narre Warren capitalised during the second term and where able to convert better in front of goals, extending their lead to five goals by the main change outscoring the home-side 14 goals to 10. Cranbourne continued to apply pressure on the ball and fought hard to keep the margin close. Cranbourne did well to have the margin within striking distance with one quarter to go. The Eagles continued to push hard and had the premiers on the

back foot but they close the gap enough to secure an upset win at home going down by 2 points.

DOVETON 50 LOST TO TOORADIN-DALMORE 60 Tooradin continue to flex their muscle against the competition as they travelled to Doveton to make it eight straight and start their season undefeated. Doveton have gone back to basics in recent weeks with Coach Liz Edwards instructing her players to focus on the doing the little things well and the rest will look after itself. Doveton really took up the fight against their fancied rivals and managed to keep the margin within striking distance. Doveton have a resilient seven and bolstered by a fantastic attack which was on show. Doveton should be proud of their four quarter performance and gain plenty of confidence going into the second half of the season. Doveton were the second team for the season to be within 10 goals of the early season premiership favourite. Tooradin are looking for the first senior premiership in over a decade and look to have themselves well placed with 10 rounds to go.

PAKENHAM 34 LOST TO HAMPTON PARK 55 Pakenham welcomed Hampton Park in a must-win for the visitors. The Lions themselves were desperate to secure their first four points of the season while the Redbacks where looking to bounce back after a trouncing at the hands of early premiership favourite Tooradin last week. Pakenham showed some guts and determination early before Hampton Park started to play better with quick fluent ball movement from their midcourt setting up their attack with better opportunities to score. The Redbacks attack has been inconsistent but really grew into the contest after the main change. The Redbacks slowly but surely extending their lead until it became insurmountable and cruised to a 21 goal victory, their 55 goals their best return for the season.

TOORADIN-DALMORE (1ST 7-0) V BERWICK (6TH 2-5) Tooradin are the comprehensive ladder leaders dominating in each and every one of their contests in Season 2017. They’re the number one ranked squad in terms of offensive and defence and it appears nothing is getting in their way towards their first senior netball premiership in over a decade. The Seagulls take on the Wickers who have found their mojo and are playing a great brand of spirited netball which has seen them rocket up the ladder after starting the season with four loses. Coach Janine Kilmartin has shown some faith in the young Berwick side and has been prepared to move players around until they find the right combination. It must be working as the girls in Blue have won two of their past three matches and are a chance to play in finals due to log jam on the ladder. The Wickers will be tested by the best in the competition down at Westernport Oval, it will be a true test to see how far the girls have improved and where their chances lie for the second half of the season. Tooradin are on a rampage and even at Berwick’s best they will be doing well to restrict them to under 50 goals, only two teams have been within 10 goals at the final whistle. Tooradin to win by 17 goals.

ROC (8TH 2-5) V BEACONSFIELD (2ND 6-1) ROC have been on the slide in recent weeks, after an impressive start to the season the Kangaroos have lost their last four consecutive games as they scramble to remain in the finals picture. The Roos welcome Beaconsfield who will be refreshed after enjoying nearly three weeks between matches. Beaconsfield have improved again this season which sees them sitting second on the ladder only one game behind the ladder leaders. Beaconsfield’s experienced players have seen them dominate most of their opposition this season and are seen as the main challenger to Tooradin for top spot this season. The Eagles play a ferocious brand of netball whipping the ball through the midcourt getting the ball quickly into their attack which has them ranked fourth overall with an average scoring rate of nearly 47 goals a game. ROC face a tough challenge again this week, they will hoping that Beaconsfield are still in sleep mode after their break from the court, if they can secure the early ascendancy they might be able to put enough pressure on their fancied rivals to cause an upset. The Kangaroos would need a lot to go right for that to happen, the Eagles will be looking to secure another win and reach the half mark of the season in second place breathing down the necks of Tooradin. Beaconsfield to win by 25 goals.

NARRE WARREN (3RD 5-2) V DOVETON (4TH 4-3) Third versus fourth which will be the game of the round. Narre Warren where perched on top of the SEFNL Netball world for nearly 18 months, they enjoyed a winning streak which lasted over three seasons but have found themselves two games off top spot. The Magpies have blooded plenty of new talent into the senior line-up over the course of the season and will be a menacing task to anyone who has to play them during the finals. Doveton has been a team on the improve in recent weeks, under the guidance of Liz Edwards Doveton appear to be getting better each week. The Doves will enter the contest full of confidence with a nothing to lose mentality. Narre Warren are still a force to be reckoned with they along with the ladder leaders are the only teams to be averaging more than 50 goals a match. If Narre come out early, it will dash any confidence the Doves had pre-game. Doveton have a talented forward combination but they will have their work cut out against a tight defence and also be under pressure to convert every opportunity as the Narre goalers have been in great form this season. Narre to secure the win at home and increase the gap between fourth and fifth on the ladder. Narre by 13 goals.

PAKENHAM (9TH 0-7) V CRANBOURNE (5TH 3-4) The struggling Lions welcome Cranbourne, who find themselves in a position where they must win to keep the gap between them and the teams outside of the 5 to at least two matches. Cranbourne have been in every contest but just falling short at the crucial moments in their matches. Pakenham who have shown signs of improvement have struggled over the course of four quarters to stay competitive, the Lions start the matches well but when fatigue hits the opposition sneak away and setup their wins during the second and third quarters. Pakenham netball club is in the process of transition and will be looking to get more experience into their younger senior players to set them up for long term success in the future. Cranbourne have too much at stake to let this chance slip at Toomuc Reserve, Cranbourne’s strong play is built around their staunch defence. The Eagles defenders have them sitting as the fourth ranked defence, only a few goals behind the ladder leaders. Cranbourne will be too strong in the later parts of the match and should win comfortably. Cranbourne by 19 goals.

We travelled to Casey Fields for Round Eight to take on Cranbourne. In the calmest conditions we have experienced at the normally windy courts, some high scores were recorded. It was almost a clean sweep with nine wins, including a thriller for A Grade. A NW 46 def Cran 44 BOC: Erin, Britt & Leigh A nail biting win from A Grade after Cranbourne narrowed the margin in the final quarter through their impressive defence. B NW 64 def Cran 33 BOC: Holly, Jem & Meaghan B Grade produced their best game for the season so far. Clear, direct feeding to the goal ring created a goal fest with all players stepping up their defensive pressure to cause turnovers. It was great to see plenty of tight defence rewarded with intercepts and finished off with accurate goaling. C NW 50 def Cran 26 BOC: Donna, Tayla & Kate Another convincing victory for C Grade, whose performance improved as the game went on. The mid court steadied to ensure their feed into the goal circle was accurate and were rewarded with another strong performance from goalers, Jac, Chels and Maddie. At the other end, Donna rebounded strongly and drove the ball out of defence. D NW 54 def Cran 32 BOC: Teagan, Britt, Paige & Hayley The wins continue to tick over for D Grade, with another high scoring performance. Great pressure from the mid court helped create scoring opportunities. 17R NW 47 def Cran 27 BOC: Tamika & Hailey A high scoring performance for Casey Fields, with our attacking end converting everything that came their way. We will be keen to build on this performance against Doveton, which is set to be a challenge. 17W NW 42 def Cran 26 BOC: BOC: Abbey & Taylah A steady performance from our 17 White girls who built on their lead in the second half. We wish the Cranbourne WD a speedy recovery after a nasty fall.

15R NW 41 def Cran 16 BOC: Chloe, Amy H & Molly The 15 Red girls controlled this match from the outset. Their discipline and focus came through, rewarded with a big win and 41 goals. 15W Cran 30 def NW 21 BOC: Paris & Ella In a tight contest, Cranbourne got the better of our 15 White girls who battled hard for four quarters. After the week off, they will be keen to turn their form around against Doveton. 13R NW 27 def Cran 16 BOC: Annie, Jasmine & Courtney Our 13 Red girls recorded back to back wins with a pleasing team effort. The girls continue to show their flexibility each week. We look forward to seeing them climb the ladder in the second half of the season. 13W NW 30 def Cran 13 BOC: Tahlia, Elly, Jayde Our youngest netballers recorded an impressive win to start the foggy morning at Casey Fields. The girls concentrated for the whole game, putting their training into play. After enjoying the Queen’s Birthday weekend we return to Fox Road to take on Doveton. All ten matches are set to be fierce contests. With several players unavailable due to VNL commitments we look forward to seeing others step up and take their opportunities to embrace a challenge. A fantastic night was had by all that attended the club’s annual Cocktail function. Congratulations and sincere thanks must be extended to all those involved in the planning and running of the evening, which saw maximum attendance for the event enjoy amazing cocktails, fantastic music, great company and delicious food and the right ingredients to make an excellent night out! So proud of all our junior teams on their convincing wins against Hampton Park, keep working hard at training and the rewards will continue to come. Some great netball was displayed by our seniors that with consistency for four quarters will bring the wins. We warmly welcomed Tarina and Erin to our C Grade team and club. Despite the miserably conditions last training with it being so wet and cold, well done to all our players who participated in the specialist sessions offered by our coaching staff and the innovating and motivating fitness session provided by Emily and Kate. Thanks to the Ellis family who captured these great aerial shots of our training. We look forward to welcoming Cranbourne this Saturday for Round 9.

Round 8 saw us come up against some very strong Narre Warren teams. Our 15 white team had a great win against some talented opposition. Unfortunately that was our only win for the day. A grade displayed some amazing netball skills and determination in a close game, going down by only two goals. This week is an away game for us as we take on Pakenham. All teams are fired up and looking forward to taking the court after a week off. This week we have two milestones for the club and would like to congratulate Steph Wright for playing 100 senior games and Brooke Davey for playing 50 senior games. Congratulations to both of these girls. Thanks to the ongoing support from our sponsors: Trios Sports Bar Sports Co Thermofilm Y-Not Lawn and Garden Care

D Grade : Another great game from another flexible team combination. This 19-26 win also firmed our position in the top 4. Strong defence across the game ensured we kept Berwick below 5 goals each quarter. special mention to our 2 17’s Jacinta and Zoe for assisting us whilst we recover from injuries, illness and prepare for remaining rounds. Congratulations to Crystal and Jason on their recent wedding and to Sarah H for your BOC this week. Under 17 WHITE: An excellent defensive effort for four quarters. The girls worked hard in circle defense to turn the ball over. Unfortunately we were unable to capitalize with some poor turnovers and inaccurate shooting. Well done to Berwick who were the better team on the day.

Under 15 WHITE: 15 white had a great competitive game against Berwick on Saturday. Up until then we had very little competition . It was goal for goal right through the game we maintained our intensity right to the end. Unfortunately the unfamiliar pressure saw us make simple mistakes dropped balls and goaling inaccuracy which affected our game greatly. We still had some good connections down the court but we couldn’t capitalise on our opportunities. The game ended in a draw. This was the first time we were challenged and weaknesses in our game showed which from a coaching perspective is great in moving forward and improving our game and being better under pressure. The girls attitude was fantastic during the game they never dropped their heads ROC Netball Club would like to thank our sponsors for they remained positive right to the final siren. their ongoing support in 2017 !

Best on Court: Amy Harrison, Jacinta Hickey and Zoe Dallasta Under 15 RED: The U15 Reds just keep getting better! This TEAM of ROCstars is a force to be reckoned with! Such a grounded, hard working, dedicated, committed, fun-loving bunch of girls! A fantastic team effort against Berwick this week, taking the hard fought win by 12 goals, sits these girls on top of the ladder with 1 week to go until mid season. Keep working hard, working for each other and stay focussed and this season can be what you make it girls!!!! Can’t wait to work with you for the second half of the year and see what improvements we can make!!! Go ROC!!!!

A Grade came away with a win against a tenacious Cranbourne. The game was always going to require a 60 minute effort. We started the game off well, with all players making their mark early on. The 1st half was an even affair, with only a few goals separating both teams, us enjoying a narrow lead at half time. As the game went on, we were able to assert our authority, & absorb all the pressure applied on us. By the end of the 3rd qtr, our pressure & patience in attack had provided us with a comfortable lead & a great sense of achievement. To their credit, Cranbourne pushed us for the entire game & made sure we earnt our win.

stopping their run to goal. Building on their lead each qtr, Beacy came away with a fantastic win. Awards:Mackenzie, Zara & Mikaela.

Awards:Rylee Nelson, Bianca Sanzaro & Danielle Cameron.

13 Red-After an unsettling start the girls by the 2nd qtr became a more focused team. As each qtr progressed the girls found their passion & played some beautiful moments of netball. Unfortunately due to unforced errors our 5 goal lead quickly disappeared in the last 3 minutes of the game with the final result a draw.

B Grade-In a very up & down game the Beacy girls blew out to a 9 goal lead in the first qtr, with Cranbourne managing to stay goal for goal with us in the 2nd. Cranbourne came back in the last, but the girls hung in to take away a 4 goal win. Great defence from Courtney & shooting from Kelly & Corinne were highlights of the game. Awards:Kids Room-Courtney, Khan’s Dinner-Kelly, P3 SportsCorinne, Charcoal Chicken-Ciara C grade came up against Cranbourne in very windy conditions. Happy to see us apply a lot of pressure around the ball & work hard for each other with options presenting at all lines. Awards:Mia-Khans Dinner, Hannah-Kids Room & CaityPremiere Hair D Grade-The conditions were cold & windy which is always a hard day for the goalers, but Em & Maddy K were up to it. As a team the girls were switched on & ready to play & they displayed this throughout the whole game. With 2 of our defenders out, we needed someone to step up & help in defence & that came from Kahrynn who played a ripper game along with Tay, pulling in intercepts & creating turn overs.

15 White lost in windy conditions that didn’t work in our favor in any way. We needed to see alot more control of the ball down the court, so let’s hit the training track with this in mind. Looking forward to having the full team back for the next game. Awards:Jamie-Charcoal Chicken, Keeley-Premiere Hair, Paige-Yoyo Yogurt & Casey-Video Ezy.

Awards:Darcy & Holly 13 White-After getting off to a flying start, the team quickly settled to play an open court game. The girls dominated in all areas & were able to focus on timing of leads to enable smooth passages of play. In the final qtr, we saw some girls take on positions they did not think they could manage, but proved themselves wrong & this was a good message for all team members. Awards:Abbey-Video Ezy, Bella-Premiere Hair, Sami-Yoyo Yogurt & Paige-Charcoal Chicken.

Awards:Kahyrnn-Kids Room, Claire-Khans Dinner & TayPremiere Hair 17 Red-Whenever you play at Casey Fields the weather has a tendency to play a major role in the outcome of the game, luckily the girls adapted to suit the windy conditions. Great to see our attack end combining nicely & our defensive pressure was fantastic. Awards: Bri-Kids Room, Paige-Yoyo Yoghurt & Em P-Charcoal Chicken 17 White-A top of the ladder clash saw the girls excited to head to Cranbourne. The girls looked slick down the court working together with some fantastic pieces of play. Our defence worked hard to shut down the Cranbourne attackers,

The sun was shining at Doveton in Round 8 and so were the Seagulls, bringing home 4 senior wins and a win to our 13’s Red!

team are starting to find their groove now and should be a real threat as we approach the finals.

Our 13’s Red team are now sitting fourth on the ladder for the first time in many years and we look forward to watching them work hard to keep their spot in the finals race. Well done girls!

A grade took on a tough Doveton opposition but kept up the intensity required to come home 10 goal winners.

Bad luck to the other 5 junior teams who all played fantastic games. The improvement our juniors are showing every week is so exciting for the club and we couldn’t be more proud of them. It is fair to say it has been a hard road for our junior girls in recent times, but the work, dedication and encouragement from those behind the scenes over the last few years is starting to pay off. We may not have many wins on the board, but we are seeing some real progress as we move into the second half of the season. A big well done to our junior seagulls and their coaches. The seniors had a terrific day out with C & D grade taking out much needed wins after a few weeks of missed opportunities. We look forward to seeing this continue at the pointy end of the season. Best wishes go out to Jess Lamont who sadly did her ACL against Hampton Park and is out for the season. We look forward to having you back next season and seeing you excel as head cheer leader!!

With last week being the Queens Birthday break we would like to take the opportunity to thank all those that keep the club running. We have such a positive atmosphere around the club and are fortunate enough to have many volunteers junior and senior who work tirelessly on a daily basis to not only keep our club running, but to ensure we are always striving to better ourselves. We have such a brilliant community that highlights you don’t have to be a player to be a part of the club. A huge thank you to all who contribute to our great club. This week we welcome Berwick to the nest and hope to continue our recent form and bring home the points! We also have our past players day and ‘97 and ‘07 premiership reunions. We look forward to seeing many of our club legends to stroll down memory lane while watching the current day seagulls do their thing!

B grade stepped up this week to take an 11 goal win and secure third on the ladder. This

berwick A grade are certainly proving that they are on the up and up for season 2017. Last rounds win against ROC saw them come away with a 5 goal win and move up to 6th on the ladder, proving to the critics that they will certainly not be the cellar dwellers for season 2017.

With a celebration for Sarah Nash, reaching her milestone 100 games, the game certainly reaped its rewards for one of our own. The defensive pressure was the key to this game, lead by Morgan Thomas, who is without a doubt starting to prove her place in the A Grade side. Accompanied by Bec Langford and Captain Renee Gill, the girls turned over some crucial balls, to then have the strength of our midcourt, flawlessly feed the ball into young guns Itagia Amatagia and Emily Wilson to convert. The club would like to congratulate our 15 & Red’s coach Leanne Walford and 4 of her young players in Akech, Joyce, Rylee and Sussu on making it to State Championships, being held June 25th at the State Hockey and Netball Centre. Alongside SEFNL rep players from Cranbourne, Narre Warren and ROC, the girls will compete against the best netballers in our state and show what they are made of! With this being just the 2nd year that our league has been represented in such tournaments, it is amazing achievement by these players and one the Berwick Netball Club is very proud of. SEFNL will be represented in both the 13’s and 15’s divisions at the State Champs, and we wish all of these young girls and coaches the best of luck! Major sponsor News - Berwick Mazda are having an EOFYS, if you are looking at upgrading your car and thinking of a Mazda, please head on down to Berwick Mazda and mention the club’s name.
