ANDREW MACARA AT 80
Red Rag Gallery is delighted to celebrate Andrew Macara’s 80th birthday with a new exhibition of his latest oil paintings. 2024 also marks the anniversary of a 20-year-long collaboration between Andrew and Red Rag.
This new collection continues to showcase Andrew’s distinctive style. His unique ability to convey time and place, movement, and perspective through the capture of light, shade, shadow and reflection. ‘His pictures glow’ is how one critic describes the work, alongside a remarkable talent to ‘capture the essence of a subject’, with a few brief strokes.
Andrew Macara has always been an artist. He began in his early teens by copying Rembrandt and Caravaggio and took classes with Leonard Fuller at the St Ives School of Painting, though largely considers himself to be self-taught. He has exhibited regularly at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition, is an elected member of the prestigious New English Art Club and is listed at the Courtauld Institute. He has also won many art awards, including Brian Sewell’s Critic’s Choice, awards from the Royal Academy Exhibition, the Paris Salon and a coveted De Lazlo Medal.
An Andrew Macara painting takes time to produce. He travels extensively to gather inspiration and often returns to familiar themes - the British seaside, the countryside of his native Derbyshire, snowscapes and skiing in the Alps. Children and the suggestion of sunshine are constant muses. Each canvas is a celebration of life – a joyous moment of leisure and play.
“I need to paint quickly to work outdoors and create the initial scene. I also make sketches, take photographs and once they are in the studio – the hard work begins.”
Andrew then returns to work on unfinished paintings daily, making adjustments until they are finished. This is helped by a strong visual memory, which allows him to recall the exact tone and colour of a scene. He only paints with oil and takes several months to complete a canvas to his satisfaction.
As one of the UK’s leading contemporary figurative painters, Andrew Macara’s art is highly collectable, and he has undertaken several commissions for public and private collectors. These include a series of contemporary works for Sir Anthony and Lady Bamford, Scott Bader Company, the Hilton Hotel Group, St John’s Ambulance, Westminster’s New Parliamentary Building, and Lloyds TSB. His work can also be seen in public art galleries and spaces.
Andrew continues to paint full-time, to experiment with subject matter and techniques and to travel in pursuit of new sources of inspiration.
