Susan Brown and Nagib Karsan From City to Sea Exhibition

Susan Brown was born in Yorkshire. She studied at Leeds Polytechnic between 1976 and 1979 gaining a BA Hons in Three Dimensional Design. Since then Susan has progressed two main areas of interest - interior design and contemporary painting. She has completed numerous commissions and several projects as both designer and contemporary artist. Susan Brown is the recipient of many art prizes and awards for her contemporary paintings including: The Laing Art Competition; Hunting Art Prize, Regional Winner; Penrose Purchase Prize 2005 and the Singer & Friedlander Sunday Times Watercolour Competition 2001 where she was a finalist. Working predominantly using watercolour and acrylic, her contemporary paintings are bold and striking, most of the work featuring European cities. Focussing on city life and the source of inspiration that lies behind man-made structure and man’s relationship with his environment, these architectural studies explore the rhythm and movement within buildings and interiors alongside the formulas and patterns found in the natural world, the cycle of growth and decay, the very structure of life and the continuum of the life cycle. Susan Brown is not limited to architectural studies as she also creates beautiful abstract paintings, which are inspired by still life subjects and landscapes, focusing on texture and pattern. Talking about her paintings Susan says: ‘I look at a field, it’s content and it’s changing form over the seasons. I look at the connection, the structure that links the air and the earth and the power of the everyday’ Susan Brown paintings appear in many notable private and public contemporary art collections including: Halifax Plc, Allied Domecq, Sir George Martin Trust, Universities of Sheffield and York.

Nagib Karsan and Susan Brown From City to Sea Exhibition

Nagib Karsan was born in Tanzania in 1955. He spent his early life in Africa and at boarding school in the UK. An enjoyment and talent for art resulted in Nagib undertaking an art course in Kenya before embarking on a varied career in business. The 1990s brought a less hectic lifestyle and the time to rediscover his interest in art. Nagib is now painting regularly and uses an unusual technique of applying a collage of printed cut paper to the surface before and during the application of paint. This often creates random and unexpected results which are full of interesting textural qualities and enduring appeal. Nagib’s art style is loose and fluid. The result of careful observation and study, his paintings have a strong sense of life and immediacy. Karsan finds particular inspiration in the work of Frank Webb, who is known for his use of colour in his vibrant watercolour paintings, and his influence on Nagib’s approach to contemporary paintings is evident. Karsan’s paintings are colourful and uplifting, successfully capturing the essence of a place, combining textural content whilst capturing the effect of ever-changing light on the landscape.
