Red Rag Gallery is delighted to introduce the latest collection of oil paintings by Rex Preston, one of the UK’s leading landscape artists.
Over the past 50 years, Rex has been drawing inspiration from the breathtaking landscape of his native Derbyshire and has developed a unique style that perfectly captures the constantly changing mood and colours of the countryside.
For this exhibition, Rex has also painted in the Lake District, Cornwall and North Devon.
His work is often produced en plein air. This allows him to incorporate the ever changing effects of season, light and weather to produce movement and vibrancy. In his studio, Rex uses his vast collection of pencil sketches, together with the colours from his plein air work to paint his larger canvases.
“Last year the weather patterns were quite unusual, but spring produced the most spectacular display of hawthorn blossom I have ever seen. The trees were laden with thick white blossom and the colours of the spring flowers seemed more vibrant than ever. The autumn colour in the Derbyshire dales is always brilliant, but the vast amount of hawthorn berries made it even more fascinating to paint.”
