This exhibition was painted during the past year and reflects my longing for the summer and normality. It is no coincidence that most of the paintings in this collection are set outside and feature some sor t of food! While working away in my studio during the long winter months my thoughts and in turn my ideas were centred on when I would be able to buy an icecream or a coffee on the beach or visit a fishmonger’s or even take the camper van out! I revealed in this alternative universe where all was well, a world where orderly canines queued for hotdogs and laughing children ran along the sand, shrimp nets in hand. This collection perfectly displays my respect for shape and my love of colour, both internally and externally. Normally my subjects inhabit an external world, which gives a dynamic and vibrant contrast to their internal narratives. Most of the paintings in this collection follow that rule; There are, however, four paintings which use interior settings and a subtle close-toned colourway. Flower Girl was the final painting in the series; I think It is clear to say she escaped. The scenes are calm and collected and the people are joined by their animal loved ones. In hindsight I can see they were my unintentional response to Lockdown. Catriona Millar

This collection is inspired by moments captured during this past year and celebrates the enduring capacity of the human spirit to experience joy and intimacy in the midst of adversity. In ‘Winter’ and ‘Feeding the Hens’, I tried to capture the wonder and luminosity of a world shrouded in snow, and the exaggerated calm and serenity created by a natural white background. My longing for the sea and the exhilaration it brings me when being close to it, are conveyed in ‘Watching the Waves’ and ‘In the Waves’ where I used expressive layers of white oil against which vague figures emerge. ‘Italian song’ which refers to the music made on Italian balconies during the first lockdown, and ‘Three bathers’, a homage to Picasso’s painting of 1918 ‘Les Baigneuses’, are the central pieces of this new collection and both evoke a feeling of freedom and movement, while the two smaller Venice windows with their windowsill herbs, roses and visiting doves, connect the interior with a promise of summer to come.
