DETROIT RED WINGS Team History

HISTORY BEHIND THE NAME Detroit joined the NHL for the 1926-27 season and was known as the Cougars. After an unsuccessful four years of play, coach Jack Adams thought a name change might help spur a winning season. The name was changed to the Falcons beginning with the 1930-31 season. When James Norris, Sr. purchased the hockey franchise in 1932, he changed the name a third time to the Red Wings. Red was a part of the name because the existing uniforms were red and white.

TEAM COLORS Little is known about why red and white were chosen for the team’s colors back in 1926. However, red is an emotionally charged color, demonstrating passion, strength, energy, fire and excitement. And initially, the sport of ice hockey, with roots dating back to the mid1880s, was played outdoors surrounded by snow, thus the color white. The colors of red and white do indeed seem fitting for an energetic hockey team that provides so much excitement to its fans.

THE LOGO After James Norris, Sr. changed the name from the Falcons to the Red Wings, he searched for a new logo. He was reminded of the logo worn by the Montreal Winged Wheelers – an amateur hockey team he had played for years before as member of the Montreal Amateur Athletic Association. That logo’s wheeled center seemed quite appropriate for Detroit, a city that had put the world on wheels, and the wing would denote speed as the players soared around the rink in smooth flight.

EVOLUTION OF THE LOGO The original Red Wings logo was rather crude, but it has been refined over the years. When Mike and Marian Ilitch purchased the team in 1982, they enlarged the logo on the game jerseys to demonstrate the pride they felt for the hockey team and the franchise’s long and rich history.

“Our team got better as the year went on,” said former defenseman Brad McCrimmon, who is in his second year as Wings assistant coach. But a core group of players turned everything around in the end, starting the longest streak of consecutive playoff appearances of the four major North American pro sports. Today, the Wings’ streak is at 19 straight postseason playoff appearances, and only the New Jersey Devils (13) and the NBA’s San Antonio Spurs (12) are close. “There was a lot of character on that (’90-91) team,” former Red Wings right wing Dave Barr said. “Our leader was

Steve Yzerman, so that says a lot right there. I think the teams of the mid-80s, when Detroit kind of made a turnaround really kind of laid the groundwork for teams in the future and obviously have carried a great tradition now.” When it counted most, the Wings managed to form some cohesiveness, at the end of the season. But the topseeded St. Louis Blues, the Wings’ firstround opponent, squeezed out a 3-2 win in Game 7 to win the series.

“Our team got better as the year went on,” said former defenseman Brad McCrimmon, who is in his second year as Wings assistant coach. “We were able to scratch our way into the playoffs. And actually, we had them down, we just couldn’t finish them off and they came back on us.” Yzerman, just 25-years-old at the time and already in his eighth NHL season, was beset by trade talks after the Wings missed the 1990 playoffs. Change was necessary, but in the end it was coach Jacques Demers who was given a pink slip. “It’s not as much fun to have personal success if your team’s not being successful,” McCrimmon said of Yzerman. 10

That was when Yzerman truly began to evolve into the leader the Wings needed to make a push for the postseason. Despite being such a young captain, he knew he had a responsibility to turn his team’s luck around. “He understands the role of the captaincy,” former goalie Tim Cheveldae said. “He knew he was going to come back and do everything possible to right the ship and get the team back in the playoffs, and he did that, and that’s why he’s been one of the greatest hockey players in the NHL.” The team had plenty of offensive talent in forwards Sergei Fedorov, Jimmy Carson and Shawn Burr, but in order to make a return to the postseason, things had to be settled defensively. coach Bryan Murray, according to Cheveldae, had “a very good eye for talent,” signing veteran blue liners along with giving the young netminder plenty of ice time, which helped him find his game in time for the postseason. “They went out and acquired McCrimmon and Rick Green and those types of guys who were veterans and won before,” Cheveldae said. “I think the combination of that came in and helped settled down a lot of things on the back end. I think even though we had a lot of different players, I think we

had a good core of talent.” McCrimmon agreed, saying, “I think there were some different players that were brought in, and just the maturing of the players that were here, like Yzerman, Cheveldae and Gerard Gallant … Kind of a combination of things, and then that year, we were able to get in.” The patience of the Wings’ front-office staff ensured their players had time to become successful. Since that season, the Wings qualified as a topfour seed in the Stanley Cup playoffs 17 times in a row.

Though he never won a Stanley Cup, Dave Barr was a vital part of the Red Wings’ rebuilding years that launched a dynasty. Barr played 4 ½ of his 13 NHL seasons with the Red Wings – scoring 82 goals with 118 assists – from 1987-91. Now in his eighth season as a pro coach, Barr is in his first year with the Minnesota Wild. Do you keep in touch with any of your former Red Wings teammates? If so, who? I haven’t talked to enough guys. I communicate a little bit with Gerard Gallant, a little bit with John Chabot, and I occasionally bump into Harold Snepts. Which of the current Red Wings is your favorite? And why? They have a lot of great players. I like watching Pavel Datsyuk for the skill level, not necessarily playing against us. I think Nicklas Lidstrom just for his consistency, he’s been doing it for so long, and he’s one of the best defensemen to ever play the game. And I think he’s such a class act on and off the ice that it just adds to the respect that I have for him. What was your favorite memory as a Red Wing? When we were down 3-1 to Toronto in 1987 and we won the next three games and won 3-0 in the last game in Detroit. It was a fantastic atmosphere, especially against such a great Red Wings’ rival. I remember that Glen Hanlon was our goalie and it was a lot of fun. Which of the guys you played with was the toughest? I was very privileged to have two guys – Bob Probert and Joe Kocur – who were both great teammates in regards to sticking up for their teammates, and they were very good hockey players. Who was the funniest? It probably was Tim Higgins. He always had a smile on his face, and was always telling jokes. He was another piece of the puzzle with our success; a guy that was another good teammate. What was your favorite restaurant in metro Detroit? It would be Tom’s Oyster Bar on Mack Avenue. We lived in Grosse Pointe at the time and it was a great spot to go for a beer. Marge’s on Mack was another great bar and grill that we used to like to go to for a bite to eat. How has the NHL changed since you played?

The expansion for sure and there is a large European influence now with a lot of super players who have come from there. The money is probably the biggest difference. You play 4-5 years in the NHL and you’ve done very well for yourself now. Toughest team (other than the Red Wings) when you played? We had some great rivalries with St. Louis and Calgary was another one. They always had big teams, very good teams, in the mid- to late-80s. And then there were the Edmonton Oilers, who we played twice in the semifinals and they were pretty much the cream of the crop at the time. Probably the toughest team to play against because of their speed, their skill, and if you wanted to play physical, they could do that to. What do you love most about the game? It’s why I enjoyed playing, and it’s still what I enjoy about coaching, it’s the camaraderie. Coming to the rink every day and you’re just having fun with your friends. You’re trying to do a job, and ultimately, you’re trying to win games and the Stanley Cup, but at the same time, hopefully you have a very enjoyable job. I’m fortunate to be doing it for a lot of years. Who had the greatest infl uence on your career? I would think that the majority of the players that you would ask that, they would say one of their parents or maybe both of them. I think it was my dad, just for the support all the way through the good times and bad. He was always there for me. What advice would you give to kids playing today? If they’re playing hockey, I hope that they enjoy it, especially when they’re younger. It is a lot of fun, but at times they put a lot of pressure on themselves. Most of the kids want to play in the NHL and I think when they get to that age where they see that it might be happening they put a little too much pressure on themselves and they may not enjoy the game as much as they can.

The Detroit Red Wings welcome the San Jose Sharks to Joe Louis Arena for the 2010 Stanley Cup Playoffs Western Conference Semifinals! The Red Wings are in hot pursuit of their 12th Stanley Cup as the Sharks look to capture their first Cup in team history. The Detroit and San Jose franchises have met only three times in playoff history. In 1994, the Sharks defeated Detroit 4-3 in a first round matchup. Detroit exacted revenge on San Jose in 1995 sweeping the Sharks 4-0 in the Western Conference Semifinals. In 2007, the Red Wings topped the Sharks 4-2 in a second round showdown. Pavel Datsyuk and Jimmy Howard Named Finalists For NHL Awards

Red Wings F Pavel Datsyuk and G Jimmy Howard have been named finalists for NHL Awards thanks to their stellar play in 2009-10. Datsyuk is a finalist for the Selke Tophy (best defensive forward) and the Lady Byng Tophy (sportsmanship and gentlemanly conduct). He has won the Lady Byng Trophy the past four seasons (2006-09) and could become the first player in NHL history to win the award in five consecutive years. Datsyuk has also captured the Selke Trophy the last two seasons and is seeking to become the first player to win it in three consecutive seasons since Bob Gainey won it four times from 1978-81. Jimmy Howard is a finalist for the Calder Trophy (rookie of the year). This season he became just the 4th rookie goaltender in franchise history to win 30 or more games (finished with 37 total), joining Terry Sawchuk (44 in 1950-51), Roger Crozier (40 in 1964-65) and Glenn Hall (30 in 1955-56). Datsyuk is a Selke finalist for third straight year By BILL ROOSE

or future hall-of-famer Nicklas Lidstrom there isn’t another player in the league who exemplifies the true definition of the Selke Trophy like Pavel Datsyuk. “It takes a lot of hard work,” Lidstrom said. “When you’re back-checking, you’re skating hard to catch the guy, and Pav’s so good at not letting the guy know that he’s right behind him.” In April, the Red Wings learned that Datsyuk is a finalist for the Selke – awarded annually to the best defensive forward – for the third straight season. He has won the award the last two years. Datsyuk will learn if he’s won for a third straight time at the NHL Awards Show in Las Vegas on June 23. 42

The category that best lends credence to the award is takeaways, something Datsyuk has turned into an art form. Over the last four seasons, he is the only player to finish each season among the league’s top five puck thieves. Datsyuk was first in three of the seasons, with 2008-09 being the lone exception. That year he was second to Pittsburgh’s Evgeni Malkin by five steals. Again this season, Datsyuk led the league with 132 takeaways – 49 more than Vancouver’s Ryan Kesler, who finished second in the category. Kesler, a Livonia, Mich., native, and Pittsburgh’s Jordan Staal are also Selke finalists.

Asked if anyone is better at what Datsyuk does on the ice, Lidstrom said, “That would be Hank”, referring to the other half of the Wings’ Euro Twins, Henrik Zetterberg. “But seriously,” Lidstrom continued, “I think both of them are so strong defensively. They get a lot of recognition for their offense, but Pav has won in the past and he’s very good defensively. Hank does the same thing. He’s very responsible defensively, and has the offensive skills to be a top player in the league.” If Datsyuk wins the Selke, he’ll become 44

the first player to win three in a row since Montreal’s Bob Gainey won four straight, beginning with the inaugural award in 1978. Over the last 15 seasons, the Selke has been awarded to a Red Wings’ player 40 percent of the time, with Kris Draper (2004), Steve Yzerman (2000) and Sergei Fedorov (1994, ’96) also taking home the prize. While a language barrier often makes communication – even with teammates – difficult, forward Darren Helm said that he learns from just watching Datsyuk.

“Every day, every game, he does something,” Helm said. “His skill with his stick and his ability to take pucks off of players, the moves that he makes with the puck, are just so unbelievable. “There are a couple of times where I’m like, ‘Wow!’ ” The Wings are so accustom to seeing Datsyuk’s on-ice magic, that singling out a particular play isn’t easy. There are just far too many, Lidstrom said.

“I think we’ve gotten used to it now, but his takeaways are what you think of,” he said. “He just as a knack of finding the puck, back-checking hard and lifting a guy’s stick. “Most players slash or go after a player. ReD WiNGs BlOGGeR MaKes his FiRsT TRip TO hOcKeyTOWN This season, the Red Wings’ New Media Department has worked to keep fans in the front row regardless of geographic location with the use of social media and technology. Recently, the Wings received an education in the exact reach of Hockeytown by none other than our blogging community – more specifically, a Wingnut blogger from Brazil named Guilherme Calciolari who goes by the name of Herm. In September, Calciolari who contributes to the blog Red Wings Brazil and regularly comments on Abel 2 Yzerman confessed to his fellow bloggers that he had neither been to a live hockey game nor spoken face-to-face with another hockey fan. Without skipping a beat, the blogging community went to work and created a campaign called “Herm 2 Hockeytown” geared toward raising the funds to bring Calciolari from Brazil to Detroit to see his first hockey game before the end of the regular-season. Within 30 hours, the group reached its goal of $1,000 – almost enough to cover Calciolari’s travel expenses and ticket to see the Wings at the Joe – but they didn’t stop there. Over the next several months, the Herm 2 Hockeytown team worked with the Wings’ staff to direct all excess donations to Children’s Hospital of Michigan for a grand seven month total of $6,876.54 raised by the blogging community. All money, aside from the $2400 needed to get Calciolari to Detroit, will be donated to Children’s Hospital of Michigan. On March 26 Herm fulfilled his dream, arriving in Hockeytown to see the Wings take on the Minnesota Wild along with 120 other bloggers from across the U.S donning “Hockeytown No Limits” shirts and celebrating their incredible accomplishment. This effort was recognized in the arena, across the blogosphere and from within the Wings organization as nothing less than Hockeytown showing no limits in 2010.
