THE REFUELED ONE SERIES The Refueled ONE Series. One single subject, photographer, craftsman or artist. A modern take on the printed paraphernalia of my youth. The faded pages and colors of LIFE magazine. The satirical tone of MAD. The low-fi quality of comics. The rebellious feel of the 60’s and early 70’s. The size of vintage scout manuals and Stuckey’s road trip souvenir activity books.

Fifth in the series is artist Rich Cali. I have long been a fan of simple design and bold lines. It stems from my youth in the 60’s when POP art was at it’s height of popularity. When I discovered Rich Cali’s work, it spoke to me. Maybe it was the combination of black ink on torn, old yellowed paper. Maybe it was the feel of the strong ties to American folk art. Maybe they reminded me of ancient cave drawings, or maybe it was the religious undertones of his work that reminded me of my Catholic upbringing.

Whatever it is, it makes me FEEL - and isn’t that the point of art?

the coastal northeastern section of our county is very rich with grit and layers upon layers of history and change at every turn. It's right there staring you in the eyes...you can't hide from it, it gets inside of you.

dIy ethics were also engrained in me by my peers and the community I surrounded myself with. All of these elements played an integral part in my growth as a person as well as an artist.

be it graffiti, zine making, self publishing, photography, booking punk shows and making flyers to promote these events; all of these things went hand in hand for me. I never questioned where these practices came from, or why I did it, it always just seemed to be a natural progression.

I'd like for my art to hold it's weight over the years. strong, flat imagery that will continue to provoke emotion or deliver a message for time to come.

travel is also a fountain of inspiration for me. seeing how others live their day to day lives, what they hold sacred, and their personal interaction with their physical surroundings is all great motivation.
