WEST TEXAS A Photo Essay by Carey Quinton Haider

04

: : LETTER : :

THE REFUELED ONE SERIES As a publisher, I want to keep expanding the way folks view media, style and art. But in doing so, I also want to remain true to my personal vision, ideas and memories - while continuing to connect with readers. I have been publishing Refueled in a fairly standard magazine format for eight years. I decided in 2016 I would break away from that format a bit and experiment with how Refueled is presented, allowing a year to see what breaks through.

The Refueled ONE Series. One single subject, photographer, craftsman or artist. A modern take on the printed paraphernalia of my youth. The faded pages and colors of LIFE magazine. The satirical tone of MAD. The rebellious feel of the 60’s and early 70’s. The size of vintage scout manuals and Stuckey’s road trip souvenir activity books.

The ONE Series is my way of narrowing the focus on the people that interest, inspire, and challenge me. The things that move me and rest inside my being.

After hearing of Carey Quinton Haider’s trek across Texas, the west specificity, documenting what he encountered, I knew it was the perfect project to kick off the series. West Texas holds a dear spot in my heart. Small towns such as Alpine, Marathon, Valentine and Marfa are all quiet, strange and wonderful places that draw me back time and time again. Carey captured their vibe perfectly.

Buy the ticket. Take the ride.

THE WEST AND EAST ARE TWO DIFFERENT LANDS. THE EAST WILL KICK YOUR ASS AND THE WEST WILL SMOKE YOUR GRASS.

: : ONE SERIES : :

DON’T MESS WITH TEXAS I used to have family members who would come to town once a year for Christmas, out in my homeland of Oregon. They all drove sun faded trucks with gas mileage worse than a pocket with a hole in it. At Christmas, the family would sit around gambling welfare wages while chain smoking. Somewhere along the trail, family gatherings and road trips with my dad turned into carrying a camera and taking photographs of the things that reminded me of my youth. The photographs featured in this Refueled ONE Series were taken during two weeks driving around the state of Texas in 2012 and 2015. Many roads traveled east to west, north to south, and back. The west and east are two different lands. The east will kick your ass and the west will smoke your grass. Small towns like Marfa and Marathon feel like home to me. A few good souls occupy these lands waiting for something that never happens. Keep on keep'in on.
