et in the 1930s, Woody Allen’s bittersweet romance Cafe' Society follows Bronx-born Bobby Dorfman (Jesse Eisenberg) to Hollywood, where he falls in love, and back to New York, where he is swept up in the vibrant world of high society nightclub life. Centering on events in the lives of Bobby’s colorful Bronx family, the film is a glittering valentine to the movie stars, socialites, playboys, debutantes, politicians, and gangsters who epitomized the excitement and glamour of the age. Bobby also befriends Rad (Parker Posey), owner of a model agency, and her husband Steve (Paul Schneider), a wealthy producer. Vonnie and the boyfriend break up and Bobby seizes the opportunity to romance her. Ultimately, she returns his affections. When Bobby asks Vonnie to marry him and move to New York, she is tempted, but things do not go smoothly. Heartbroken, Bobby returns to New York, where he begins working for Ben, who has muscled his way into owning a nightclub. Bobby displays natural talents as an impresario and swiftly promotes the club into the hottest in town, renaming it “Les Tropiques.” Rad introduces him to the beautiful socialite Veronica (Blake Lively) whom he courts assiduously. Although still carrying a torch for Vonnie, when Veronica reveals she’s pregnant, they marry and begin a genuinely happy life together. Everything seems to have fallen into place for Bobby until the night Vonnie walks into Les Tropiques.

ulture and cinema have a long history. From indie to C art house, the world of film and theatre have taken the imaginings of all dreamers and turned them into reality in many different ways. The culmination of this artistic endeavor is brought to the big screen thanks to Fathom Events and their partnership with the Metropolitan Opera to present The Met: Live in HD series in movie theaters. The masses who do not have opportunities to attend live opera or symphony now can enjoy the cultural experience of cosmopolitan theatregoers.

Coming soon to a cinema screen near you is the artistic accomplishment and high-definition broadcasting of the masterpiece La Traviata. I had the opportunity and great honor to share a few moments with one of opera’s biggest superstars, Mr. Michael Fabiano. Michael is an awardwinning tenor and the leading voice in La Traviata, giving vocal sound to the character Alfredo.

Interview By Derek Sante Derek Sante: Thank you for taking time out of your busy schedule to talk about this performance and broadcast. Michael Fabiano: It is my pleasure. As a performer, I have a great appreciation for the audience that consumes HD broadcasts. I am grateful for this technology, which allows so many lovers of the arts to see the performances at the same time as our audiences in Moscow. DS: Before we get into this broadcast and performance, can you talk about your history with music and opera? MF: My whole family is very musical in general. My grandfather was a pianist, my grandmother was a concert pianist, and some of my family members sing opera, sing jazz, and perform in musicals. Music and performing is a big part of our lives –it is in our blood. Personally, I never thought I was going to perform classical music. When I went to college, I thought I was going to become a lawyer. But there is something in the operatic literature, something absolutely real about the music itself and the synthesis of the words that won me over immediately. There is no turning back once you’re hooked. DS: The music won you over, and so did the Metropolitan Opera House. Returning again to perform another grand opera, do you have special memories associated with this venue? MF: It started when I won the Metropolitan Opera Competition in 2007, when I was 22. There is a lot of history there; I always look at The Met as one of those hallmark moments for any opera singer. When you step onto that stage, you are given the opportunity to step into

greatness. I was fortunate enough to achieve that pretty early in my career, and now as I return many times over each year, it is very humbling to me; it signifies that the responsibilities I have to the public are meaningful and great. DS: What do you try to convey to your audience when they ask you about opera? Do you focus on the music itself, the art, or perhaps the tradition? MF: Opera is the most enduring form of music and art there is. The reason it is the most enduring form is because it is a synthesis of music, text, drama, stagecraft, and often dance. When you put that into one package on stage, there’s a reason it still thrives all over the world even though its roots began over 500 years ago. When I meet someone who is not yet a fan of opera, I always ask that person: “Are you a fan of great music? Do you enjoy humming a tune when you leave a movie? Can you remember in your head the soundtrack to your favorite film?” Well, when you go to an opera by someone like Mozart or Puccini, you certainly can remember various tunes in your head after you walk out–for days, and days, and days. That’s why I think opera is enduring. It is memorable and it will stay in your heart forever. DS: For those who have not had the pleasure, can you talk about and your character Alfredo? MF: Sure. La Traviata is one of those stories about the meaning of life that defines how love, hate and jealousy can impact us all. When I think about Alfredo and the pain he has gone through, I put myself in this man’s shoes because I think every single one of us has had a lover who may have suddenly left our lives. Alfredo has been abandoned after falling madly in love with someone. To all of that pain, anger and grief, there is so much relatability to many of the characters in La Traviata. DS: Along with that enduring tradition and memorable nature, high-definition broadcasting has been added, thanks to Fathom Events and the Met. Are you excited about the possibilities from broadcasts such as this? MF: I’m thrilled! I think the more we can open up the door to people who have not yet experienced the wonderful world of opera, the more we can expose our future generations of children and adults to this genre; to me it is art in its purest form. Adding opera content at movie theatres for a reasonable charge encourages people to give us a try. It offers that 12-year-old child, that young couple, and guests of all ages and backgrounds opportunities to appreciate masterpieces like La Traviata. They can listen to the music, marvel at the stage and allow themselves to dream of things far away….

ased on the acclaimed book History on Trial: My Day in Court with a Holocaust Denier, DENIAL recounts Deborah E. Lipstadt’s (Academy Award ® winner Rachel Weisz) legal battle for historical truth against David Irving (BAFTA nominee Timothy Spall), who accused her of libel when she declared him a Holocaust denier. In the English legal system, in cases of libel, the burden of proof is on the defendant, therefore it was up to Lipstadt and her legal team, led by Richard Rampton (Academy Award ® nominee Tom Wilkinson), to prove the essential truth that the Holocaust occurred.

David Hare, the writer of DENIAL, was intrigued that this film would be a defense of historical truth, even though that imposed restrictions on the script he wrote: “I had to be historically true myself – meaning that the enemies of the film could well criticize it if I do anything to distort the record of what actually happened. You can’t fake drama in the courtroom that didn’t happen.”

Behind the story DENIAL producers Gary Foster and Russ Krasnoff first became aware of Deborah Lipstadt and her book History on Trial some eight years ago. “I thought it was wonderful storytelling in addition to important information,” Krasnoff explains. “Gary and I got together and decided there was something there.” The two producers quickly realized that Holocaust denial was more widespread than they had realized. “It was all opinion turned into fact,” Foster reflects. “You can have a conviction, a passion, a belief – but that doesn’t make it a fact.”

British-born director Mick Jackson believes this film is more than just a story about Holocaust denial, but rather a human story with universal themes. “There’s the story of the trial: ‘Who will win? Who will lose?’ There’s the human story of the participants. And then Deborah, with all her media savvy, knows there are two trials here: the one in the courtroom and the one in the court of public opinion.”

Behind the casting Rachel Weisz (The Lobster, The Constant Gardener) jumped at the chance to portray Deborah Lipstadt on film: “It’s a very meaty, interesting role. Deborah’s a wonderful person, and yet this story is about something bigger than her. We spent time together in New York before filming started. [Deborah is] a really colorful personality. She’s no wallflower.” Weisz reveals that Lipstadt had answered all her questions and was hugely helpful: “I didn’t know anything about Holocaust denial, not really. But I was interested in knowing how she can teach such an emotional subject. How does she remain unemotional, which she does when she teaches about something that’s difficult to stomach? But I think she can be an historian, at a remove.”

Tom Wilkinson was intrigued by the unusual story of DENIAL. “In a certain sense, the central story is this idea of a fish out of water and the difference between two cultures, not only American but also Jewish culture. She wants to have her say in court, and they want to have their words spoken. Yet there are her rather cool lawyers who say: ‘No, you can’t. Once you get in there, you’ll get pulled to pieces.’ The emphasis in the movie is on the sense of isolation that she feels in the context of this rather bizarre court case.”

Jackson says Weisz was wonderful to work with. “She likes being in the moment; she’s spirited like Deborah -- sharp, impulsive, empathetic. She likes to immerse herself in a scene without too many preconceptions, so everything strikes her afresh.” If Weisz felt comfortable playing such a positive, life-affirming personality as Deborah Lipstadt, Timothy Spall knew the task of portraying such an abrasive, unattractive character as David Irving would be tough. During the trial, Irving had elected to represent himself; he sat alone, way apart from Deborah Lipstadt’s legal team, who in real life (and in the film) made it a policy not to make eye contact with David Irving. “Over that week and a half, I did start to feel a bit lonely,” Spall confirms. “It wasn’t as if the other actors wouldn’t talk to me between scenes. Of course they did. But I started to shut myself away. I wouldn’t go and chat. I’d sit on my own in a room that had the windows blacked out. Somehow it seemed right. I’d be all alone in that court and I felt isolated. But then, of course, David Irving fought that case alone.”

His colleagues on the production praise Spall’s selflessness in portraying David Irving accurately. Foster notes, “When we had a table reading with the cast, Tim read Irving so convincingly we almost felt sympathy for that character. Only a great actor could do that.”

Behind the words with the real Deborah Lipstadt Ever since DENIAL was optioned, Deborah Lipstadt has stayed closely in touch with the production. Given that the trial happened 15 years ago, Lipstadt said it was surreal to relive these years of her life. “One of the things I remember from that time was the number of people who told me not to fight. But if I hadn’t fought, consequently I would have lost. It would then have become illegal to call the world’s leading Holocaust denier a denier. The court would have judged he’s not a denier because I didn’t fight. It would have been a terrible thing and if it had come about as the consequences of my not having fought, you’d be legitimizing Holocaust deniers.” In retrospect, Deborah regards this trial as significant. “We exposed a lie,” she says. “And we exposed the fact that you can’t play with history. The other thing is, this trial has importance over and above and beyond itself. In an age of relativism, with kids grow up thinking, ‘It must be true. I saw it on the Internet.’ People take it at face value. But the facts are: #1 - Not everything is true, and #2 - More importantly, there are not two sides to every issue. Look, the ice caps are melting. Slavery was brutal. Sexual abuse of children is wrong. Elvis Presley is dead. Facts are facts. Historians may debate how the Holocaust was decided. But the fact is, the Holocaust happened. I hope people walk away understanding that certain truths are fact. They can’t be debated. And that’s not being closed-minded.”
