reginald LATA Long Beach, CA Korean & Filipino Food Volleyball Korean Hip-Hop & R&B Photography, Blogging, Eating If you were to ask me what I miss the most right now, my answer would simply be my hometown, Long Beach. The place where my family is and where I grew up. I miss the spontaneous outings with my friends, where I’d bring my camera and capture the moment. Then we’d move along and hit up our favorite Korean BBQ place and just goof around as we wait for the waiter to bring our delicate brisket. I’m gonna miss all of this, but I know Cal Poly is going to be good to me.

my special place:

Waking up at 7AM for class may be the worst thing for most people, but as I leave for that 7AM class I am woken up to the beautiful view outside of my Cerro Vista apartment. This tells me that choosing Cerro Vista over Sequoia was the best choice for me. The view itself is very calming and the outline of the mountains just make it even more beautiful.

Small Gathering Space

This quaint area located next to the science buildings is quite peaceful and a rather good resting spot in between classes. Being in a focal area on campus, it can be noisy throughout the day, but provides a great gathering space for individuals trying to work on an assignment, eat lunch, hangout, or anything along those lines. The slight higher elevation helps to distance one from the traffic below, and puts you at a solid viewing spot. This little spot possesses multiple sitting areas; whether that be the ground or one of the benches, as well as a nice walkway.

Peaceful Space

Dexter’s Lawn, a place of tranquility and sociality. This space is either filled with students playing frisbee or students just chilling out working on their tan or just catching up on sleep. When the sun is shining, no matter what time of day it is, there will always be students on this lawn. On the rare occasions when there are no students on the lawn, you are treated to a peaceful sight. The soft green grass acts as a mattress to most students trying to get some shut-eye as the sun envelopes them in a warm blanket, gracing them with a peaceful nap. However, that nap is soon disrupted by the influx and efflux of students hurrying to get food or rushing to get to class.

Refuge Space

Behind Sierra Madre: a place of refuge. Large trees create a sense of protection in the space. Yet despite the enclosed feeling, that Sun beats down on the hilly terrain and makes one seek out shade. The area is desolate at all times during the day and is an ideal location for reflection, relaxation, or simply to escape the hectic college life. As one sits on the bench and admires the landscape, background noise from the Sierra Madre dorm can sometimes be heard in the distance. As the intensity of the Sun recedes, wild life emerges from their shelters. Lizards and chipmunks can be observed scattering about in the late afternoon. Once the Sun goes down, the space is softly illuminated by streetlights along the road a hundred yards below.

Coffee Shop / 314 Architecture Studio (http://www.archdaily.com/347655/coffee-shop-314-architecture-studio/)

The two sketches shows where the seats and table would be placed in a typical coffee shop and the other diagram shows the layout for where gallery items would be placed. The diagram below shows how the placement of the coffee shop/gallery is in an area that has a high circulation of people. The amount of people going through the area would be great for the coffee shop and the gallery.

This precedent is inspirational to our own precedent because this coffee shop creates the sense of a gallery, especially how all the tables and chairs are set up. All the space can make way for gallery items and such. The gallery items could be placed on the empty areas of the floor and could also find places for the projects to be hung. Also, it has a great space for Architecture majors to work on their projects and just take a break from all the crazy projects. Also, in the floor plan there are a lot of places to sit, but if we were to take out a few of the tables and seats, you can make room for a gallery walk, but still be able to keep the coffee shop running.

//project: 24 Times //why i like the piece: The piece is simple and looks aesthetically pleasing. It is a very simple concept that is very intesting and very innovative. The idea that the clock is the correct time anywhere in the world is awesome. The design looks great, the black and white contrast well together and it just looks well made. //major materials: The major materials of the piece include glass, plastic clockwork pieces, and metal washers and nuts. //feature the matierals: The project used the materials in a normal clock and just adjusted to the new design. //perception: It acted as a normal clock, it’s seen as a normal clock, but with more inspection, it’s much more than a simple 12 hour clock.

//material: Wood | design: Wave Wall //attraction: Wood could be used for almost anything. There are so many types of wood that could be used, either for structure or design. What is so great about wood is that it could be easily shaped and could create many amazing designs. //claims and qualities: The manufacture claims that wood could be easily installed and that there are a wide range of tiles finishes. //appropriation for project: The overall design of the wave wall using wood gives the project a more organic setting. Also, if the project

//material: Paint | design: Reddex //attraction: A paint that is able to resist fires is a great neccessity for many structures and buildings. Also the idea that it could come in paint, paste, or foam is extraordinary. //claims and qualities: The manufacture claims that when it is subjected to fire, the Reddex chars and burns at a slower rate than other fire retardants. It contains no ignition resistant additives, so no toxic gases are released. //appropriation for project: The protection of the structure and the building is key to the project. Being located on a college campus, if a fire were to occur in the establishment, it’s essential that it doesn’t cause more damage to the rest of the campus. So if we use a material that allows fires to burn slower, it would save the college so much money. Saftey is a very important thing.

Skin & Bones | Bone #1

//material: Metal | design: Tri-Chord Steel //attraction: Like wood, metal could be shaped and turned into any figure the designer would like. However, with metal, it’s a stronger material that would allow to be used to make better and stronger structures. //claims and qualities: The manufacture claims that steel has the highest thermal, seismic, acoustic, and fure ratings for steel framing and will meet the thermal transference of wood. They could carry up to 5,170 points per stud. //appropriation for project: This material would be ideal for the structure of the project. It would be able to support the coffee shop gallery. Also it’s recyceable material, which is something that would match the theme of our gallery as most of the projects, from the architecture students, would be made out of mostyl recycleable materials.

week 9

teammates: Rush Cafe

mackenzie BAILEY bryan LEE su KIM ashley WONG

As a group we decided to use the college to show students would be able to work inside and outside of the cafe. It would be a very social cafe and students would be able to display their works throughout the cafe, in case that the Berg or KTGY Gallery is filled. Also, this could be a place for children to play, in case we get visitors from the schools outside of Cal Poly. It will be in a busy are, but it will attract customers to come and order something from the cafe!

final week

extra: reflection design, design, DESIGN although this isn’t necessary at all, in order to keep a consistency with all the portfolios i worked on this quarter, i felt the need to add a personal reflection about edes 101 during this quarter. honestly, i really enjoyed this class. although i may have disliked a few assignments and group pairings, i feel like i got a lot out of this class. the amount of designing i’ve done this quarter is ridiculous, but i loved it. i also loved how i got to meet so many awesome people in my class. working with all the other concentrations in the caed college was great. i have to thank my mentor, monet, for being an awesome mentor, and of course, professor lucas for being an amazing professor. c: thanks for a great quarter, till next time edes.
