2 路 Bauernherbst 2015
From the 29 August 2015 the Hochkönig region is the perfect place to experience local customs and traditions, tasty treats, and festivals full of atmosphere. “Bauernherbstfest” (farmers’ autumn festival), running from 29 August right through to the start of November, is a real treat for guests staying in the province of Salzburg. 2015 is also a very special year; the 20th year that Maria Alm, Dienten, and Mühlbach has been inviting guests to enjoy local farming culture: bread baking, cheese making, star-lit walks or wild herb guided walks, delicious “Bauernkrapfen” (farmers’ doughnuts) and home-made schnapps. The anniversary festival weeks are full of variety, with craft demonstrations, farmers’ markets, music, and local groups in traditional costume. To mark the opening of the new “Walk of Fame”, ski stars such as Michael Walchhofer and Hermann Maier will be visiting the Gasthof Hinterreit. When the farmers bring the harvest in and the cows have been decorated for coming down from the Alpine pastures, it is time for “Hoagaschtn, when people of every age come together to chat and enjoy local delicacies, play music together, and sing. Originally, “Hoagaschtn” was a time when the farmers celebrated getting the animals down from the mountain successfully and started preparing for winter. For 20 years now, Maria Alm, Dienten and Mühlbach have been re-living this centuries-old tradition within the framework of “Bauernherbst”.
Enjoy sitting together, making music, and enjoying the food and drink. The events calendar in the anniversary year is once again packed full with the sound of folk music, traditional dances, and local customs such as “Schuhplatteln” dancing and a demonstration of haymaking. Dienten is the first village to start the Bauernherbstfest weeks, with its Bauernherbstfest on 29 August 2015, followed by Maria Alm on 6 September 2015, where a concert given by the local wind band marks the start of the festival weeks. Mühlbach also starts its Bauernherbst on 6 September. The Hinterthal Bauernherbst is on the 12 September 2015, where visitors can watch craft demonstrations, enjoy regional produce and find out how it is made. Experience and take part; both are possible, and desirable, at Bauernherbst. For example, making schnapps at the Jausenstation Grünegg, where a special 20th anniversary Bauernherbst schnapps is even being made. At the Dienten “Schmankerlfest” on 23 September 2015 guests who have been coming to Bauernherbst for 20 years will be honoured. Or, take part on a wild herb natural guided walk, or a natural cosmetics workshop showing you how ointments and creams are made from local herbs. During the whole of Bauernherbst, there is lots going on to do with herbs.

There is a wooden bench in front of the local farmhouses here, a so-called “Gredbank” which had, and continues to have great significance. It is an evening meeting place for members of the family, neighbours, and friends. Nowadays people use Facebook to exchange the sort of information that used to be shared on these benches. And whilst social networks certainly have their place, it’s good to chat face-toface now and then, and this year’s Salzburg Bauernherbst is dedicated to, in dialect, “Hoagaschtn”.
“Hoagascht” is a well-known custom. People meet together in a lovely spot to chat, listen to and tell stories, eat and drink, play music and sing. There’s plenty to talk about: memories of times gone by are shared between the different generations and cultures. Experiences, traditions, and food recipes are passed on through the generations, as are local farmers’ sayings, “weather rules”, and the latest news about what is going on in the area.
