Welcome to CityMag... IF you’re still mourning the lack of a summer – let’s be honest, it was pretty rubbish – fear not, as there’s plenty to keep you entertained in the Steel City in the coming months. This month sees the return of the universities’ many students and if you’re new in town, we have plenty of pointers to make sure you get the best impression of our wonderful city. Throughout the magazine you’ll find our ‘Vibe Lists’ looking at everything you need – from bars to clubs and hairdressers to things to do – to settle in with ease. Elsewhere we chat to former Eastenders actress Samantha Womack about her role in the recent Lyceum show, The Addams Family, and about her plans for the future. We also look ahead to the Last Laugh Comedy Festival, the MADE Entrepreneur Festival and get some top vintage clothing tips from Becca Linnard. Our cover star is Florence Blanchard, a French-born, Sheffieldbased artist who draws much of her inspiration from her scientific background. If you’ve been passing through Kelham Island recently, you might have seen one of her murals on the side of Shakespeares’ pub. In the next issue we’ll looking ahead to – dare I say it – Christmas. Until then…

WELCOME back CityMag readers (and all the students who are descending on our city). Well, we have certainly been very busy over our summer break. Sheffield has bloomed over the last few months with many openings in the city – bars (The Devonshire), restaurants (Juke & Loe) and the hugely anticipated IKEA. Get your allen key at the ready! Please accept this issue as a great guide to Sheffield. Whether you’re looking for cheap eats, craft beer or want to visit the Peak District, use the magazine and go explore! We’ve got some first-hand knowledge from students at Hallam and UoS, picking out what they think you should be getting up to and where you should be going. A big thanks to Rachel Wood and Judith Torner for your contributions to this issue. Keep checking out www.sheffieldvibe.com for updates on everything that’s going on in Sheff… see you in December and enjoy! Melanie Jackson Publishing Manager

The month of October is dedicated to comedy as Sheffield embraces the 24th Last Laugh Comedy Festival. Here’s our pick of funny men (and women). Tom Stade: I Swear 1 October, 8pm Sheffield City Hall, £17.92

Tom Stade is back on tour after a hiatus. The Canadian arrives in Sheffield with his new show after having blasted Edinburgh Festival. Prepare yourself to be charmed by his natural mirth and well… a bit of a foul mouth, which, I SWEAR, will not leave anyone indifferent. Impractical Jokers (The Tenderloins): Where’s Larry? Tour 7 October, 8pm Sheffield Arena, £33.60 & £44.80

The American comedy group The Tenderloins have become famous worldwide thanks to their programme, Impractical Jokers. Always ribbing each other into hidden camera jokes and absurd situations, their

stand-up tour is, for sure, going to be as ridiculously funny as their programme. With only ten dates in the country they land at Sheffield’s Arena ready to make you laugh until you cry. Nick Helm: There Is Nothing You Can Do To Me That I Haven’t Already Done To Myself 7 October, 7pm The Leadmill, £12

Stand-up comedian, actor, writer, director, musician, poet and… wanker? Helm has taken the comedy world by storm and become incredibly popular in the past four years with various TV and cinema productions. This October the British Comedy Award winner will be in Sheffield with his first national tour to relieve us from our boring day to day lives and blow your mind with his hilarious performance combining music, poetry and stand-up comedy.

Paul Chowdhry: Live Innit 11 October, 8pm Sheffield City Hall, £22.40

Star of BBC2’s Live at the Apollo, Taskmaster and Stand up for the Week, this comedian, actor and TV personality makes his shining comeback to the live show scene. After his 100date tour sold out in 2015, his new show Live Innit will make the stage vibrate and the audience shake with laughter. Jon Richardson: Old Man 11 October, 8pm Sheffield City Hall, £22.96

Sharing date, time and venue with Chowdhry, the also Live at the Apollo and Taskmaster star is not in Sheffield to play around. The British Comedy Award nominee has arrived with a new tour with the objective of complaining about the state of the world… without trying to solve anything. Hilarious,

interesting, brilliant and maybe a bit disturbing is how he has been described, and he’s now back to show it to you all. Greg Davies: You Magnificent Beast 17-18 October, 8pm both days Sheffield City Hall, £30.80

So popular they have had to extend his stay in Sheffield to two days, Davies is back with his new stand-up show after four years and his biggest ever tour. Being referred to as one of the kings of comedy, the BAFTA nominated star of ‘Cuckoo’, ‘Man Down’, ‘The Inbetweeners’ and ‘Taskmaster comes to Sheffield to show what a magnificent beast he is. Luisa Omielan: Am I Right Ladies?! 23 October, 8pm Sheffield City Hall, £15.68

Omielan returns to the standup scene with the continuation of her last hit ‘What Would Beyoncé Do?!’ and it definitely won’t leave anyone indifferent. The comedian nominated for Best Comedy Show in Melbourne has had sold out tours in 12 countries and became a viral internet star through a Thigh Gap joke. Her shenanigans, jokes and selfappreciation will make you roar with laughter so, really, just tell her she’s right and go see her show, you won’t regret it. Simon Amstell: What Is This? 26 October, 8pm Sheffield City Hall, £25.76

Amstell describes his new stand-up comedy as a “deeply personal, funny exploration of beauty, intimacy, freedom, sex and love”. After his acclaimed international sold out tours he arrives in Sheffield to make us laugh with his wit, intelligence and frankness.

GORGEOUSLY GHOULISH It’s spooky, kooky and perfect for the whole family... The Addams Family are in town in a Broadway musical comedy. Richard Abbey spoke to leading lady Samantha Womack. WITH TV credits that include the likes of Eastenders, The Bill, Mount Pleasant and Game On, not to mention a film career (Up and Under anyone?) and a brief flirtation with music (Eurovision 1991), it’s perhaps surprising to hear that Samantha Womack would choose the stage before anything else. Past appearances in the likes of South Pacific and Guys and Dolls (with Patrick Swayze no less) clearly fuelled a passion for theatre that now sees her playing Morticia Addams in the touring production of The Addams Family: The Musical Comedy. “I just always wanted to go back to it, it’s always immediate and it totally recharges your batteries,” she explains. “There’s no waiting around, there’s no shooting scenes out of order, you’re very much in control of the performance from beginning to end. There’s just something about a live audience that feels very exciting, certainly with a musical that enhances the whole experience.” After debuting on Broadway in 2009, this touring version of the show,

produced by Aria Entertainment Music & Lyrics Limited, stops off in Sheffield from 12-16 September at The Lyceum. The reaction to the musical so far has been good. “For a new show it’s pretty amazing,” adds Samantha. “Sometimes with new shows it can take a while to catch on but the word of mouth has been amazing. It’s a real hit.” Like the TV show of the sixties and the films of the nineties, the stage version of The Addams Family takes a humorous look at a family with a difference. Wednesday Addams (played by Carrie Anne Hope) has grown up and has a shocking secret that only her father, Gomez (Cameron Blakely) knows – she’s fallen in love with a sweet young man from a respectable family. Keeping this a secret from his beloved wife Morticia, Gomez plans a dinner for his daughter’s new boyfriend and his family, which of course will be attended by the whole Addams clan, including Pugsley (Grant McIntyre), Uncle Fester (Les Dennis) and Lurch (Dickon Gough). Suffice to say, everything doesn’t go to plan. If you’re thinking this is a

family show, you’re right, but there’s much more to The Addams Family: The Musical Comedy than you think, which was part of the attraction for Samantha. “I think it was the script and the music [that attracted me to the role],” explains Samantha. “Obviously I knew The Addams Family and in my head I was thinking ‘this is going to be just another generic family show’. I wasn’t expecting it to be as beautiful as it is, it’s very layered and it’s very eerie but it’s very stylish. “It’s very operatic at times, a bit like Sweeny Todd mixed with Rocky Horror… it’s a lot more than you expect. Adults are loving it – it’s something for the whole family. “We’ve got audiences who are killing themselves laughing with it, which is so nice. The design looks beautiful as well, it looks like a Broadway show, very classy.” The role of Morticia Addams is predictably over the top – she sings, she dances and pretty much makes her presence felt in every scene she appears in. Despite the length of the tour – it started in April and

AUTUMN 2017 / ISSUE 43

finishes in November – I get the impression that Samantha is having a ball, aided by the closeness of the cast. “We’re really tight, more than any other show I’ve done,” she beams. “We’re always out in restaurants or bowling, it’s become a real little family, that really helps. If you’re performing with people you really love and you spend a lot of time with them, that’s such a bonus as it’s not always the case.” When she’s not moving around, two days off each week also helps Samantha to see plenty of her family, particularly her daughter Lily who already has a keen interest in the arts. “My son’s 16 and my daughter’s 12, but she’s in a school where they really support the arts so she comes when she can, I can’t keep her away, she lives in the theatre, she loves it. The hard thing is just not being at home, not being in your own garden, missing the dogs, things like that. “With a soap you can go home. The reason I did Eastenders was because I’d just had Lily and I wanted to stay at home. With other acting jobs you can be away for 12 weeks… so in a funny

14 Rinsed the museums, attractions and bars but still hunting for your culture fix? Arts lovers new to Sheffield are in for a treat, as some of the best theatres and galleries are found right here. way you’re away longer with filming. Soap is the one that really keeps you in a family kind of environment, which is great, but then you’ve got those gruelling 14-hour days. Each job has its ups and downs.” Travel could become a further part of Samantha’s future if the producers of this show succeed in taking The Addams Family: The Musical Comedy to Asia in 2018, something the Brighton born actress wouldn’t be averse to. “I’ve always wanted to work in Japan,” she says. “Working away is ok really, as long as I can get the kids with me. I’m a massive believer in experiences being just as important as education. I think kids that travel and get to see other things, if they can, is really great.” Travel plans aside, could Samantha ever be tempted into taking part in a reality TV show? “I’d never say never, you’ve got to work at the end of the day, but for now I’ve got my eyes on the acting. Strictly always looks like real fun, I like the idea you’re learning to dance. I’m dancing in this and I’ve really enjoyed it. It’s

important to never say never to things as you look like an idiot when you end up doing it.” You heard it here first, Samantha Womack would like to do Strictly! While professing her love for the stage, there is one TV role that Samantha that is particularly proud of and something that she is perhaps not as fond of. “I liked a character called De Pauli, she was in Liverpool 1, a kind of feisty Detective Inspector. I’m a fan of police dramas and she had a lot of edge, she felt quite spunky, and the writing was superb in that. “There’s loads of things that I didn’t enjoy but I try not to regret anything because it all adds up to being where you are today. Eurovision, when I was a teenager, was insane and not particularly enjoyable.” One thing is for sure, Samantha is certainly enjoying her role in The Addams Family: The Musical Comedy. Catch it while you can.

The Lyceum Theatre With decades of top quality plays to its name, it’s not all about what happens on stage – the building itself is worth the visit alone. Built in 1897 the Lyceum is the only surviving theatre outside of London designed by famous theatre architect W.G.R Sprague, and is the last example of an Edwardian auditorium in Sheffield. www.sheffieldtheatres.co.uk Moor Theatre Delicatessen Theatre Delicatessen turn disused spaces into experimental arts venues and, while in Sheffield in 2014, they got wind of the former Woolworths building lying empty on The Moor. Full of atmosphere, with secret corners and dark rooms, it is perfect for immersive and promenade performance practice. www.theatredelicatessen.co.uk

Good music for a good cause... welcome to Oxjam Sheffield 2017. SHEFFIELD’S musical heritage will come to the fore once again in October as both local and up-and-coming artists take to the stage to raise money for Oxfam GB. Oxjam Sheffield Music Festival is a volunteer-led, multi-venue one day event. The festival will take place in venues across the city’s Cultural Industries Quarter, from The Washington to the Rutland Arms, with The Leadmill hosting the official official after party (entry included in ticket price). The line-up features some well known local favourites as well as being a platform to support new and up and coming artists. Acts include Patawawa, The Vellas, Captain Avery & the Cosmic Triceratops of Intergalactic Peace, LIO and more. This grassroots festival aims to support and platform talented local artists and showcase local venues whilst raising money for Oxfam GB in their fight against extreme poverty. Previous acts,

including Truly Apparent, Bison, Drenge, Hands Off Gretel, Nai Harvest and The Sherlocks, have gone on to play some of the UK’s biggest festivals including Leeds Festival and Glastonbury. The last Oxjam Music Festival in October 2015 raised £6,000 for Oxfam GB who provide disaster relief, clean water for communities and facilities and training for women across the globe to enable them to empower themselves financially and grow their communities. There are over 40 Oxjam events happening across in UK in the month of October. This year’s festival Sheffield takes place on 21 October. Oxjam will also be collaborating with Sofar Sounds, local pub quizzes and glittering the faces of Sheffield at upcoming fundraising events in the next few months. Confirmed venues so far include Sheffield Hallam HUBS (main venue), Rutland Arms and The Washington.

Oxjam Sheffield 2017 Festival Manager Sian Ellis: “We’re really excited to be bringing the festival back to Sheffield this October and add to the incredible legacy that the festival has built over the years. We’re a volunteer run festival and everybody who takes part, from the organisers to the musicians, takes time out of their busy lives to do it because they love the music scene in Sheffield and because we really care about global issues. “It’s hard work but it’s a lot of fun and it’s humbling to see the support we receive from artists, venues and the people of Sheffield, all of which is what makes the festival possible. In terms of artists and venues we’re looking forward to welcoming back friends who have worked with us in the past as well as bringing some exciting new bands and venues for 2017.” For more information contact Sian Ellis at oxjam.sheffield@gmail.com or on 07972 817345.

ARTS and culture are two terms that can be intimately related to the Steel City. From its history of cutlery designers and producers, requiring a great deal of creativity, to having seen the growth of artists, actors, musicians and writers, it has acquired the vibe of the ideal hipster artistic city. As such, Sheffield has much to offer culturally to its citizens and visitors and, of course, to students that arrive en masse every year. Sometimes it is difficult to find events and activities that don’t revolve around the pub or the union – here’s what you could be getting up to over the next year?

CHATSWORTH HOUSE

Taking the bus from Sheffield bus station we are quite close to the beautiful Chatsworth House. Not only it is the house where they filmed Pride and Prejudice, but it is also said to be one of the places that inspired its author, Jane Austen, for Mr Darcy’s residence, Pemberley. The bust they used of the actor Matthew Macfadyen for the film can still be found in the house, with a funny tag adding: ‘Please, refrain from kissing the bust’. You’re free to wander the estate, but there is an entrance

These cultural experiences will keep you out of the pub, at least for a little while. By Judith Torner. fee of £19.90 to see the inside of the house and gardens. WESTON PARK MUSEUM

Mostly, though not exclusively, aimed at children, Weston Park Museum is one of the fun cultural visits to do in Sheffield. It not only features many local artists, but also, thanks to its purpose of making children interested in arts and history, offers many fun and interesting exhibits and activities and all of them for free! Furthermore, after finishing the tour one can have a picnic under the sun at the park. What else could you ask for?

related to Sheffield’s historical main trade. At the yearly Great Sheffield Art Show, which is going to be held from 17-19 November 2017, local artists and other craft makers from the north will be showing and selling their works. FESTIVALS

Tramlines, the Beer and Cider festival, Sheffield’s Food Festival, Doc/Fest, Byline, Migration Matters and Off the Shelf are just some of the festivals you can go to throughout the year. Sheffield is never boring for those who search for different cultural experiences.

ART, ART, ART

Apart from Weston Park Museum, Sheffield has many galleries and museums. Graves Gallery, for example, holds Sheffield’s visual arts collection, with works from various international renowned painters such as Cezanne. The Millennium Gallery also holds exhibitions of crafts and has an interesting metalwork collection as well as events

SO MUCH DRAMA

And of course, there’s also theatre. Sheffield enjoys a healthy scenic arts culture with one of the biggest theatre complexes in the UK, consisting of three buildings: the Crucible, the Lyceum and the Crucible Studio. You can easily find a play or event to your tastes, be it dramas, comedies, speeches or musicals.

AUTUMN 2017 / ISSUE 43

My recommendation? The Addams Family musical is coming to Sheffield from 1216 September. Simply terrific. VISIT YORKSHIRE SCULPTURE PARK

Autumn is characterised by its lovely mild weather. As it is sometimes warmer and sunnier than summer, it is the perfect season for outdoor activities and visits. One of the must-see spots close to Sheffield is the Yorkshire Sculpture Park. It has more than 50 sculptures being shown from prominent artists of the likes of Ai Wei Wei and a calendar full of events. How to get there? You only need to take the train to Wakefield Westgate or Barnsley, then walk to the bus stop and get the 96 bus to the park. Admission is free.

DELIRIUM NOCTURNUM – 330ml bottle 8.5%ABV Huyghe Brewery was founded in 1906 by Leon Huyghe in the city of Melle in East Flanders. The brewery now controls many Belgian beer brands, but is synonymous with its core beer, Delirium Tremens. This time of year we’re thinking a little bit darker and so we’ve decided to feature Delirium Nocturnum. Dark brown-red, a white-yellow head, the flavour offers caramel, mocha and chocolate. A soft start, with an increasing bitterness, this is a wellbalanced beer that really will satisfy your autumn desires.

It’s to go dark this autumn, says Beer Central’s Sean Clarke. AND so we reach September, a month that’s not quite sure of itself, desperately hanging onto the last few days of summer, but very firmly getting ready for all things autumn. We particularly love this time of year as it normally means we set sail for Belgium, our annual trip to the Promised Land of Beer! Of course the chocolate is pretty good too, but it’s beer that draws us across the North Sea and as this is a beer column, chocolate ain’t going to get a look in.

*

WESTMALLE DUBBEL – 330ml bottle 7%ABV Westmalle (Brouwerij der Trappisten van Westmalle) is a Trappist Brewery based in Westmalle Abbey and the beers have been brewed by the resident monks since 1794. Nowadays we hear there are just over 20 monks in the abbey, with a very expert gang of 40 helpers! Can you imagine working there, must be magical… the Dubbel is a darker, red-brown beer with a creamy head. The flavour is typical of many Belgian beers, complex, soft, a fruity bitter finish. In a world of modern trends, these monks know that history is the future!

*

GULDEN DRAAK – 330ml bottle 10.5%ABV Gulden Draak (Dutch for Golden Dragon) is a dark Belgian beer brewed by Brouwerij Van Steenberge in Ertvelde, East Flanders. It’s named after the gilded statue at the top of the belfry in Ghent. Great reason for a name, great reason for a beer! You’ll find this delicious brew in a classy white bottle, a black banner proclaims the name and the contents warm the body, a fine protection to those chilly nights of September. Search it out, freely available across Sheffield’s bottle shops and bars, enjoy the Golden Dragon!

26 Tapas, tea and Tamper... University of Sheffield MA student – and self-confessed foodie – Judith Torner shares her Steel City discoveries.

ABOVE: New Zealand vibes at Tamper Sellers Wheel BELOW: Coffee at Five Rivers Coffee Co; Frog and Parrot; Tamper Sellers Wheel

FOOD is one of my joys in life. It is difficult to explain the pleasure I get from finding a new little restaurant, trying something I had never tried before or simply eating earthy, traditional homemade food. As a self-claimed foodie and a student, finding good and affordable places to have meals has been my hobby for a while, and my moving to Sheffield from Barcelona in September 2016 wasn’t going to change that. A year later, I have come up with a guide to some of my favourite places to eat in Sheffield that tick three essential boxes: nice ambience, good food and affordable prices. First stop is Broomhill where we find El Toro Restaurant (129 Newbould Lane). Krisna Pradipta, a student at the University of Sheffield who frequents the restaurant, describes it saying: “It’s cosy enough to be a place to meet with friends – but also good for intimate dates with significant others.” As he says, El Toro is a cosy place to have authentic Spanish tapas, and that comes from a Barcelona native! The food tastes really similar to what one would have in a Spanish household. My go-to dishes? The lentils with chorizo, the salads and, of course, the paellas. And, with an Early Bird Menu for £12.50, which offers a choice of three tapas and a drink, including beer or

AUTUMN 2017 / ISSUE 43

Spanish wine, it is quite affordable. Still in Broomhill, but completely changing nationalities, Five Rivers Coffee Co (215-219 Fulwood Road) – formerly Nam Song (Nam Song means ‘five rivers’ in Vietnamese) – is the very orange Vietnamese Café, which opened last spring. Its exotic ambience and delicious pho and baguettes, at prices as cheap as £5.75, make it a great place to stop for a lunch break. They have student and NHS card discounts, delicious sweet coffee and homemade desserts and it also offers an alternative place to work when the library becomes too stuffy. Which, being realistic, is always. In the city centre you’ll find Division Street, a great place where one can find good food

27 Great Gatsby Pix by India Hobson

without hitting you too hard in the wallet. The Frog and Parrot (94 Division Street), for example, offers a burger and drink for no more than £8. They cook the meat just right, not too raw, not too dry, and season them perfectly. Furthermore, their hollandaise sauce is the most cheesy delish I have ever tried. Same street, different style, we find the Great Gatsby (73-75 Division Street) with Mexican fusion food. Not one of the cheapest options, mind, but its spicy Kimchi pork taco is well worth the heartburn as well as their chilli chips. It tends to fill up quickly, especially during the weekends and evenings, so it is recommended to go early. Leaving the centre towards the surroundings of Hallam we find Tamper Sellers Wheel (149 Arundel Street). Inspired by the owner’s New Zealand heritage, Tamper is a fantastic choice for brunches with friends. I myself have celebrated a couple of birthday brunches there and have to say their Eggs Florentine is cooked to perfection and is covered by the right amount of hollandaise sauce. Their menu also has different choices of toast toppings, as in a typically British brunch of beans on toast, mushrooms on toast or eggs, at affordable prices and delicious coffee and smoothies to accompany them. London and Abbeydale Roads can pose a problem for food fanatics as they probably have as many food stores and restaurants as students that can attend them. Setting aside exaggeration, it is quite difficult to decide where to eat when you have such a wide variety of places to go to. In the end though, there are three venues, two on London Road and one on Abbeydale Road, that have claimed student and local attention alike. On London Road we find two international restaurants. First up, WasabiSabi (227a London Road) is a Japanese restaurant that, even though it might look pricey, it is not if you know what to order. My personal favourite is their bento box, the typically-divided lunchboxes from Japan. Ranging between £13 and £16 approximately, they give you a choice of two main dishes to have with your rice, pickles and miso soup. The grilled eel is scrumptious. Amigos (224-230 London Road) is the Mexican restaurant across the road and offers cheaper prices for big portions of amazing food. My recommendation? Choosing different nibbles to share with friends so that you can try as many of the things on their menu as possible. Furthermore, you can bring your own drinks, only paying a corkage price of £2 per person or £2 per bottle. Tempted? Finally, reaching Abbeydale Road, there’s The Broadfield (452 Abbeydale Road). Something I’ve realised since I’ve started living in the UK is that pub food is great, even more so if it can be eaten in a setting like the Broadfield, with its tinted windows, wooden tables and cosy decorations. Their Sunday roast is worth a try, but more than anything, it is important to highlight their pies which are some of the tastiest I have ever had. It is difficult to find pies that are not overly juicy on the inside or completely dry. In the Broadfield they definitely strike a balance.

COFFEE The new wave of craft coffee has well and SHOPS truly flooded Sheffield. With a huge choice of independent coffee shops opening up, our beloved city is increasingly dotted with independent gems and hideouts. Whether you’re looking for a long black or a flat white, a laid back dinner, or an early kick-start to the morning, here’s some of our favourite cafes and coffee shops, both old and new. Pizza Express Ecclesall Road has a new look – and it’s very stylish. BLINK and you may have missed the fact that Ecclesall Road’s Pizza Express was closed for just over a week over the summer so they could give it a complete refurb. Didn’t know? Well step inside and you’ll notice the difference immediately (that’s if you already missed the newlyastroturfed outdoor terrace). If anything, it looks like it’s grown up. Gone are the ‘fun’ garish mono stripes and brightly-coloured booths and in comes subtle aubergines, wood, gold and a splash of tartan. It’s stylish yet relaxed. The biggest change, though, is the conversion of an upstairs storeroom into a mezzanine floor which overlooks the downstairs restaurant and outdoor terrace. With plenty of

cosy tables for two, this is an intimate space perfect for date night, far enough away from the hustle of the open kitchen to lose yourself in quiet conversation (and pizza). And despite numerous menu tweaks over the years, it’s the pizza that’s still the star of the show. Whether you opt for the classic style, the Romana (thinner, crispier) or the new vegan options, the pizzas are everything you want – just the right amount of sauce, the right amount of cheese and plenty of toppings to choose from. I’m a bit of a traditionalist when it comes to pizza, less is more works for me, so I don’t like too many toppings. I perhaps pushed the boat out with the Padana, which had The new mezzanine floor

goats’ cheese, caramelised onion, spinach and red onion on top, but the flavours all worked well together and there was plenty of crisp in the Romana base. My wife’s Soho 65, created in homage to the chain’s first ever restaurant, had olives, buffalo mozzarella and rocket with the added option of Italian cured meats. There were no complaints across the table as every piece was devoured with gusto. In our charming window seats – the doors were open, the sun was shining – we also tucked into starters of crispy calamari and çaesar salad and chocolate fondant and traditional tiramisu to finish. With a couple of Peronis to wash everything down, it was

the most enjoyable way to spend an afternoon. Wherever you visit a Pizza Express, the tried and tested formula rarely disappoints. Our visit to Ecclesall Road was no exception, and with their stylish new look, they’ve just cranked things up a notch or two. Twisted Burger Co at The Harley

Bungalows & Bears

From Mexican street food to burgers with a twist, the independent food scene in Sheffield is thriving, writes Rachel Wood. SHEFFIELD has always had a historic independent streak. From being the birthplace of the steel industry in the 18th century, to spawning legendary bands like The Arctic Monkeys, Pulp and Reverend and the Makers, the city has never been one to follow the crowd. So it seems only fitting that Sheffield is finding fame as a hotspot of independent food culture in the UK, housing plenty of hidden gems for the discerning foodie.

Bungalows and Bears Bungalows and Bears serve up the best in melty, stringy, dripping, finger-licking indulgence, as well as tip-top burgers and tasty wings and fried chicken. The Riverside Nestled on the banks of the River Don, The Riverside, is one of the most eclectic and best-loved Sheffield venues. 33 L-R: Ryan Christian, Nicolino Dente, Adrian Bagnoli, Erkland Xhaja and Stuart Berry

Cubana’s culinary dream team has a new head chef and a new menu. WITH over a decade as second in charge – there was no-one better to take control of one of Sheffield’s flagship kitchens. Erkland Xhaja is celebrating his move to head of the Cubana kitchen in Leopold Square with the unveiling of his first menu. He worked passionately under the command of former head chef Fabian Cruz for over 13 years – Fabian himself had been there since the day the celebrated venue first opened on Trippet Lane, many years before its move to bigger premises. Albanian born Erkland moved to Italy as a child before settling in Sheffield as a teenager. He

originally started working at Nonnas on Ecclesall Road, joining Cubana in 2002 – Erkland now heads up a team of six that includes some of the most experienced and wellrespected chefs in the city in the Cubana kitchen that caters for hundreds of covers every week. He is joined in Cubana’s culinary team by Nicolino Dente, former owner and head chef of Ecclesall Road’s Santinos, Stuart Berry, the original head chef at Nonnas and former owner of Chesterfield Road restaurants Kitos and Swanky Franks, and Ryan Christian, former owner and head chef of Sharrowvale

Road’s The Pasta Bar. Erkland’s new menu sees 12 new dishes in a menu consisting of over 50 tapas dishes. It includes his own twist on the celebrated Brazilian stew made with diced pork shoulder, chorizo, smoked bacon, black beans, red peppers, tomato purée and smoked paprika. There’s also a big emphasis on fresh fish dishes including a seafood paella served in a traditional paella pan at your table and several tapas dishes with inspiration taken from trips to the Canary Islands – home of Erkland’s partner. Cubana co-owner Adrian Bagnoli said: “There’s no-one

34 Dine Sheffield

Greater escape

From 21-28 September, restaurants across Sheffield will launch bespoke menus to celebrate the city’s diverse and vibrant dining scene. Around 50 of the city’s restaurants are signed up to Dine Sheffield, a new initiative from Sheffield’s Business Improvement District (BID) based on Restaurant Week, which was first launched in New York. A whole host of dining establishments have signed up to the initiative, which is part of BID’s Alive After Five campaign to encourage shoppers and diners into Sheffield city centre in the evening. Each eatery has crafted a bespoke menu priced at either £5, £10 or £15 per person, which will be available throughout the week. It isn’t just traditional restaurants that have signed up either – street food vans, local breweries and world cuisine will also be providing special menus. Full details, including all participating venues and relevant vouchers, are available now at dinesheffield.co.uk.

The Great Escape Game has opened a second site on Vicar Lane, in Sheffield city centre. The escape rooms game already has a site at Sidney Street which has proved to be a huge success since its launch in 2015, and now the company has invested £350,000 in expansion. The new premises is home to four rooms, which will allow for up to 48 players to make their escape every hour. The new rooms are themes as bar, kitchen, sub warfare and abducted – an 18 + horror room which looks terrifying. The new venue also features a fully-licensed bar, a VR set up, the opportunity to play Cards Against Humanity and the promise of free pizza for teams of four or more. See www.thegreatescape game.co.uk for more.

New venture for NK team The team behind Night Kitchen has announced the details of their new club space. Outside Over There will be based on Stevenson Road in Attercliffe, and punters will get their eyes on the venue for the first time on 29 September. It’s the first news we’ve heard about the new venue since the team announced The Night Kitchen’s closure in June.

Well, well, well… look who’s back Sheffield band Milburn are back together and release a new album – Time – on 29 September. The band will also be touring in November but disappointingly there are no Sheffield dates – yet. Maybe there’s more to come later in the year? If you still want to catch them live they are playing London (9), Leicester (10), Manchester (11), Glasgow (16) and Leeds (17).

Countdown to IKEA opening To celebrate the opening of Sheffield’s hotly anticipated IKEA store, the Swedish furniture giant is bringing its Wonderful Everyday Tour to the Steel City from 11-28 September. The Wonderful Everyday Tour, will run for 17 days prior to the store opening, and according to IKEA, has been designed to surprise and delight everyone in Sheffield. The aim behind the event is to give ‘residents and visitors the chance to experience the little things in life that make the everyday more wonderful.’ To find out more about The Wonderful Everyday Tour, visit IKEA.co.uk/Sheffield

Waterfront festival From 23-24 September a new festival which celebrates Sheffield’s waterways will take place at Victoria Quays and Kelham Island Museum. The Sheffield Waterfront Festival will celebrate the waterways on which the city’s industrial revolution was built, almost 200 years after 60,000 Sheffielders came together to celebrate the opening of the city’s canal. The event will begin at the Terminal Warehouse at Victoria Quays, where artist Norah K Rogerson will showcase her exhibition From Dereliction to Regeneration. The event will be a reflection on the past and a look into the future – focusing on the regeneration and development of the Sheffield and Tinsley Canal. On Saturday 23 September, On The Waterfront will be held at Victoria Quays, featuring street food, live music and boat trips along Sheffield’s canal network. At 3.30pm, a special heritage boat trip on the LB Hardfeet will head along the Tinsley Canal, as the boat’s crew tell the history of the canal from its opening in 1819 right up to modern day. Down By The Riverside, at Kelham Island Museum, will celebrate the growing community around Kelham’s waterways. Throughout the day, live music from Dead Man’s Uke will keep crowds entertained and there will be stalls from Sheffield makers plus a BBQ from Steam Hammer Café and ale from the Millowner’s Arms.

36 The whole thing – the cover image is a detail of this painting

From molecular biology to modern art, Florence Blanchard’s career path is far from conventional.

AUTUMN 2017 / ISSUE 43

37 Tell us about your cover.

The image on the cover is a detail of a painting, which I produced for the show ‘Adventures in modern abstraction’ at Stolen Space Gallery in London this summer. The title is Bliss and belongs to a ongoing series of artwork which includes the mural I painted at 92 Burton Road event space in Sheffield.

Florence painting one of her murals Image courtesy Andy Brown

What’s your background?

I am a French painter, muralist and screenprinter based in Sheffield. I studied in America where I earned a PhD in molecular biology from New York University. Nowadays I mostly paint murals and canvases and in parallel I run B&B, which is a screenprinting studio and curation entity here in Sheffield.

Sheffield and remote locations through pop-ups and murals. We invite artists to collaborate on print editions, which you can purchase at bandbgallery.com What are you working on at the moment?

Has your scientific background influenced your work in any way?

My work is directly inspired by my training as a scientist and depicts abstract molecular landscapes, which question our idea of visual perception. During my studies as a scientist I thoroughly observed nature through powerful microscopic lenses and this experience has permanently affected my perception of the world. The shapes I paint represent imagined molecular landscapes where particles float around fluidly and the viewer is able to observe the world from a different angle.

I’m currently working on a mural for The Treehouse Board Game Cafe, which will open at the end of September on Boston Street in Sheffield. Which other artists do your admire?

This is always is a difficult question. There are so many artists who have inspired me along the way it feels unfair to only name a few, but off the top of my head I would say Matisse, Sonia Delauney, Barbara Hepworth and Frank Stella. What would be your dream project?

How would you describe your style?

I would describe my paintings as abstract, though they sometime feature figurative elements floating in an imaginary world. Tell us about B&B Gallery.

B&B gallery is the online outlet of our screenprinting studio. As Bradbury & Blanchard we curate art projects both in

A few years ago I painted a giant mural in Hokkaido, in the middle of the Japanese countryside. I painted this with the help of my friend who’s local to the region. There was an amazing response amongst the inhabitants of the village and it was a great moment of friendship. Only positive vibes which made it to the rank of my top favourite projects ever. I’d love to get the opportunity to do something similar in the near future. What does the future hold?

I’m preparing two exhibitions: one at Saatchi Gallery in London, and at Treason Gallery in Seattle. How does Sheffield compare to other cities you’ve lived in?

I love Sheffield because if it is very different to anywhere else I lived before. You really can’t compare it to New York, Paris or the South of France. I’m a big fan of the crazy weather that’s changing all the time and I love the fact it so affordable. After cramming myself in small flats for years I still can’t believe it is possible to have so much space to work and live for so cheap. I just wish the council would stop felling the trees!

38 VINTAGE SHOPS

HIPSTER By Judith Torner

Want to make a fashion statement at university this September? Brag Vintage’s Becca Linnard has some top tips. Now that students are returning to the Steel City, what can we expect to see in terms of fashion at university?

I think sports luxe and athleisurewear will stick with students for a while longer. Think Adidas tees and high-waisted harem pants meeting tracksuit bottoms for a casual daywear look. Brands are big at the moment. Also, people are getting more comfortable crossing leisurewear with feminine styles – oversized sweatshirts with pastel floaty skirts, that sort of thing. Students are also re-experiencing loud crazy prints – wild eighties and nineties bombers and patterned jackets are becoming popular like they were five years ago while statement macs in block colours, particularly yellow, are in vogue. People are getting more confident wearing a lot of colour again. Right now, the closest you can look to a unicorn or a mermaid, the better. Camo print seems to be in and out of fashion every two months, which probably actually suggests it’s never out of fashion. Off the shoulder tops and deconstructed shirts have been popular this summer but I’ll be interested to see if they carry on into the

autumn. They’re harder to wear when you have to start layering up. What items do you expect to be on trend?

Becca Linnard

Denim jackets are always a best-selling item. Also mom jeans for women. High-waisted Levis shorts sell all year round, strangely enough.

Students often find themselves having to choose between being fashionable and comfortable. What tips can you give us to balance both?

Don’t worry about crossing over styles. It’s totally acceptable to pair a comfy sweatshirt with a feminine dress and trainers. Loose tapered harem trousers made from lightweight fabric are great for lectures. They are normally elasticated at the ankle and waist so you can wear them high-waisted or low rise, depending on the occasion. A beanie hat is a must have for any Sheffield student facing the Yorkshire winter. Also, don’t forget to actually wear layers. Though you definitely build up a sweat running to lectures (but that’s what the athleisurewear is for, right?), I know that when I was a student my faux fur coat was my saviour. I think I even wore it in summer. Nightlife is an important, if not an essential, part of being a student. What clothes can we expect to see in the club scene?

For women:

For women – tight-fitted, sporty, casual styles. Elasticated crop tops, metallics, branded trainers, big hoop earrings – almost chavvy, but nowadays the line between chav and hipster has become blurred. The two looks are crossing over massively. Highwaisted skirts are a staple. Flat shoes most of the time rather than heels. For men – Patterned shirts, denim shirts, baseball caps, branded trainers, oversized patterned bomber jackets.

“I’ve chosen full-length dungarees with a little stretch in the denim for maximum comfort. The leopard print tee and contrasting pumps set off the silky patterned bomber, and the leather rucksack is super practical for everyday use (particularly uni).”

What is it about vintage fashion that is so attractive?

You can buy an item and wear it to death. A denim jacket will see you through your entire life unless you lose it or drastically alter in weight. That’s why vintage clothing gets handed down through generations, it’s nice to inherit a piece of clothing that you know has so many stories behind it. There’s something effortless about wearing a leather jacket or pair of jeans that have had all the wearing-in done already. The

New to the city? Here are ten things you just have to try. By Judith Torner. GOING UP ON THE ARTS TOWER LIFT Not for the faint of heart, the Arts Tower has the largest paternoster lift in the world and one of the few left in Europe. The mechanism can transport two people at a time, doesn’t have any doors and never stops, so passengers need to board as it moves. Their construction was stopped in the mid-seventies for safety reasons and it has now become one of the thrill rides for students in Sheffield. Dare to try? LOOK FOR THE BEAR PIT IN BOTANICAL GARDENS Another popular attraction in Sheffield is the Botanical Gardens. Beautiful at any time of year, it is also the stage for many events in the city. However, not many students know that, at a time (in 1855), it was also the home to two brown bears. Nobody knows how long they lived there but the bear pit that contained them can still be visited today, that is, if one can find it. TRY HENDERSON’S RELISH When asking a Sheffield native about the local sauce, her one word answer was: “Delicious”. And even though it may not be to everyone’s tastes, we can say one cannot leave Sheffield without having tried Hendos – as it’s affectionately known – at least once. Often compared to Worcestershire sauce, it is a fruity and spicy sauce that goes great with almost anything. CAFÉ ROAMING Like with the local pubs, Sheffield has seen a growth of its coffee culture in the form of independent cafes, where one can have the most amazing coffee brews from around the world accompanied by the fluffiest cakes ever. Where to go? Tamper is a definite option; the Kiwi café offers both great coffee and a brunch menu; Steam Yard has donuts to die for; Marmadukes is always the sweetest option in the centre, with a great combination of homemade cakes and expertly brewed coffee; Upshot Expresso, for great coffee and pancakes; the Holt, for scrumptious vegan cake options and the newest addition to Broomhill, Five Rivers Coffee Co, the Vietnamese café which serves traditional drip coffee with condensed milk. SHARROW VALE’S INDEPENDENT SHOPS Sharrow Vale Road is one more of the places that must be visited in Sheffield. Strolling down the street you can find anything: Scandinavian inspired decoration and accessories, homemade donuts, great Greek food, antique shops and cafes, delicatessen stores and bakeries. Furthermore, every few months, the residents of Sharrow Vale organise their popular market with all types of little local stands and events. The next one will be their Christmas market on 10 December.

BEER TASTING Sheffield has been crowned as the ‘Real Ale Capital of the World’, after a report by the University of Sheffield concluded that Sheffield has one brewery for every 23,991 people, almost five times more than London. It is no wonder, then, that pubs proliferate around the Steel City, giving the most original choices of local craft beers. Bradfield Brewery, Kelham Island Brewery, Abbeydale Brewery, True North Brew Co, Exit 33 Brewing and Steel City Brewing are just some of the many brewers that make this city a great place to enjoy a beer. Each of them have a main pub where they distribute their products. Pub crawl anyone? CLIMBING Climbing is one of the main activities to do in Sheffield if you are sports-minded. The city has one of the five best climbing walls in the UK according to Redbull.com – the Climbing Works –with options for all levels and ages. Furthermore, the city holds annual climbing competitions and is really close to the Peak District, a popular climbing spot. THE PEAKS And talking about the Peak District, whatever outdoor activity you are into, it is worth a visit more than once. The park has beautiful routes for hiking and biking and offers many activities and visits around their picturesque villages. From trying a Bakewell tart to visiting Chatsworth House or having a pint in a small pub after a long walk, the Peaks are a great destination for a sunny day out. Our recommendation? Join any of the walking, mountaineering, running or walking cubs in Sheffield for weekend outdoor outings. VINTAGE SHOPPING AND CHARITIES Everyone who has ever lived in Sheffield will probably tell you how great it is for affordable vintage shopping. Cow on West Street; Vulgar, Mooch Vintage and soon to be transferred Brag Vintage on Division Street and Thrifty Store in Castlegate, are some of the many shops where you will be able to find cool pieces on a budget to look your best at university. ANTIQUES BROWSING Another not-to-be-missed shopping experience takes us to Abbeydale Road, where you’ll find the Antiques Quarter. You will need a good eye to spot what you are looking for within the piles of mismatched objects but the experience is definitely worth it. Furthermore, Abbeydale Picture House also organises an outdoor vintage market, a great place to walk around on a Sunday morning. Their next dates? 8 October and 10 December.

The MADE Entrepreneur Festival is back to educate, inspire and motivate. make sure you’re at The Crucible on 9 November.

Simon Biltcliffe

MADE Entrepreneur Festival is returning to the Crucible, Sheffield on 9 November, and having being voted in the top ten worldwide entrepreneurial conferences, this year promises to be even bigger and better. The festival is the UK’s biggest event for entrepreneurship, offering a brand new experience to educate, inspire and motivate both early stage entrepreneurs and established business owners.

MADE’s aim is to give practical, meaningful advice and inspiration through a world-renowned line-up of experts and peers who will be sharing their views, advice and experience on growing and succeeding in the business world. This year’s line-up features a fantastic collection of seasoned entrepreneurs, world class skills trainers, business leaders, industry experts and thoughtleaders. Every attendee at MADE is a

James Brown

Keynote speaker GEOFF Ramm, the creator of Celebrity Service and OMG Marketing, knows the only way you can attract more customers is to create jaw-dropping marketing, along with great customer service which leads to lucrative, repeat business. He knows the top tricks to make you craved by your customers, envied by competitors and raved about in your industry, and after being a keynote speaker for two years, this year will be hosting the MADE festival. Here’s Geoff talking about his business, the MADE festival and offering up advice to anyone starting a similar career. Tell us about your business. I am a professional speaker at

conferences all over the country on two topics – OMG Marketing and Celebrity Service and I have written three books. I speak for everybody from entrepreneurs, start-up businesses, to some of the biggest brands in the world including Specsavers and Dixons Carphone, and I love every second of it. How did you get to where you are today? Speaking professionally is something I have always wanted to do but never thought it was possible. I set up the business 15 years ago a consultant in service and marketing, and after seven years I sat down and thought what did I really want to do for the rest of my life. The answer

to this was public speaking, so I developed the company so it solely focused on that. On to the MADE festival, what’s the highlight for yourself? It is just being there, the entire day at the conference is just extraordinary. Only a few years ago it was voted number one in the UK and fourth in the world which is just phenomenal. When the music starts you just know it is going to be a wonderful event which is interactive and inspiring. Everyone takes away new ideas, along with a thought process which can really change their business, and to be involved in something like that is pretty incredible.

What advice would you give to anyone starting a similar career to yourself? Don’t believe everything that you are told and create your own future. I was told many years ago that you can’t make a living from being a keynote speaker – I dispelled that myth years ago. Another thing is to create a brand, and above all serve your clients better than anyone else, as other businesses can beat you on marketing but nobody can beat you on service. Anything else to add? Be challenged, be inspired and let’s have some fun at MADE this year – it will be the best time spent in 2017 for businesses and entrepreneurs.

valuable source of knowledge and inspiration, and will provide you with a world of inspiration to help you achieve remarkable things with your business. Returning to host this year’s event is past keynote speaker, Geoff Ramm, customer service and marketing expert. The creator of celebrity service and OMG marketing, will have you on the edge of your creative seats with his superb on stage performance. Alongside him will be the

UK’s number one motivational speaker, Brad Burton, founder of Webmart, Simon Biltcliffe and founder of Beer 52, James Brown. Phil M Jones, a best-selling author and multiple award winner who’s regarded as the world’s leading sales trainer, will also be speaking. Phil’s unique skillset of working with small business owners, looking to increase sales to globally recognised companies, allows him to serve a range of people with different goals.

Sahar Hashemis

Phil M Jones

You’ll hear from Sahar Hashemis, founder of Coffee Republic and co-chair of the Government’s ‘Scale-Up Taskforce’, whose entrepreneurial story led to her being nominated by Director magazine as one of its top ten original thinkers. Sahar brought the coffee café culture to the UK in the nineties with her chain, and alongside her brother built one of the UK’s most recognised high street brands with 110 bars and a turnover of £30million.

All of the experienced speakers will be bringing a motivating story or skill to help you enhance your business. In the words of host, Geoff Ramm: “On the 9 November you have three choices. Stay at home, stay in your office or stay in your seat at the number one voted entrepreneur event in the UK. The choice is yours.” For more information and to book tickets visit www.madefestival.com.

‘Mr Motivator’ NO one does it quite like Brad Burton. With his unique approach to life, business and motivation, he fires people up from all walks of life giving them the confidence to take the first step into becoming an entrepreneur. He knows how to motivate and inspire, and with his high energy, humorous and thought provoking talks, the audience at MADE festival are sure to be left with ideas flowing. Here’s Brad talking about his business, speaking at MADE festival and offering up some top tips on being successful. Tell us about your business. I am the founder of a company called 4Networking, which is the largest UK joined up

business organisation. I’m also an author of four books and more recently – in the past seven years or so – I am a motivational speaker. I run my own personal development events around the UK. What would be one of the highlights of your career? The highlight of my career is that I can be myself and a success. The amount of times people have said to me that it’ll never work and that I couldn’t become a motivational speaker, but actually, when I get booked by events like MADE, it’s amazing. What will be one of the highlights of the MADE festival for you?

The whole event is a highlight. I think MADE is more than just one event, it is the Super Bowl from an entrepreneur’s point of view. It’s the ethos, culture and vibe that makes it different from other shows. The whole idea that you can do it starts when you believe in yourself. From MADE, you are going to get that belief in yourself, as the festival shines a light on your ideas and vision. Why do you think it is important to educate and inspire entrepreneurs and business owners? There is no formal education for entrepreneurs, so coming to MADE is an important first step. The first good decision you can make is going to the festival

and getting yourself educated and inspired, because if you don’t, you are missing out on starting your business. What are your top tips on being successful? Be yourself and don’t try and replicate someone else. If you are not being 100 per cent yourself, you aren’t being successful. The reason we do anything in life should be to make us happy. Make certain that you don’t end up sick as a result of your success. From someone who has been there, I urge people to slow down and see the road ahead, be able to adapt and don’t be rigid, take the diversions and detours if you need too.

lenheim Park Estates have moved to their new prestigious offices on Carter Knowle Road.

They have created a modern industrial look to their office space, which provides a wonderful environment to work and meet with clients. A key focus of the design was the creation of a large open space with a range of rooms for retreat and casual/formal meetings. The design brief also required a large board room, private offices and a media suite as well as staff facilities and a kitchen/lounge area. The concept was to create a working environment, which would be conducive to open communication with all areas designed to interconnect with the use of glazed partition walls and doors to create zoned areas. The design meets all the prerequisites for an open and accepting working culture that gives clients and employees the feeling of a home away from home. Design, development, implementation and finishings were carried out by Blenheim Park Developments and MIS Architectural Aluminium were responsible for the internal and external glazing.
