Inspired by her travels and with space to do it, she decided to open her own holiday let and set about converting an existing double garage on her countryside property.

Alfredo Geci Maranellos

After being in the UK for two years, Alfredo started college studying catering and hospitality. This quickly grew into a passion for cooking, which in turn developed a hunger to have his own restaurant.

Alfredo has now been the proud owner of Maranello’s restaurant on Ecclesall Road for ten years. He serves authentic Italian food, inspired by his time living in Italy, and his signature dish is Agnello Siculo, a succulent lamb dish which is slow cooked for four hours. It’s very popular with his regular customers.

“This job requires passion and a lot of patience,” said Alfredo. “The reward is satisfaction and not always money.

“I enjoy seeing customers walk out of my establishment happy and they return. It’s a great evening when they buy me a drink rather than the other way round!”

Homemade LPAs:What can go wrong?

Laura Cowan, head of Graysons’ private client team, has many years’ experience in helping people ensure that their future is protected.

ontrary to what you might think, powers of attorney (LPAs) aren’t just for the elderly. They’re really important no matter how old you are.

Even Money Saving Expert Martin Lewis agrees, saying that a power of attorney is more important than a will – and perhaps he’s right. After all, when we’re gone, we don’t need looking after. However, while we’re still living, we need to know that someone we trust will take care of our well-being (health and welfare LPA) and LPA) if we can’t.

Your family and friends can’t automatically access your money, even if you trust them. If you don’t have an LPA, they’ll have to go through a timeconsuming and costly process with the Court of Protection before they can handle

Admittedly, an LPA may cost a few hundred pounds, and writing your own might seem like a money-saving opportunity in the short term. However, getting everything right with an LPA can be complex, and mistakes can occur with homemade ones. Here, Laura Cowan, head of Graysons’ private client team, discusses some of these issues.

Completing the forms

It might seem like the cheaper option to complete them yourself, but the application forms can be intricate. If there’s a mistake on the application when it’s submitted to will be rejected and have to be resubmitted, incurring additional costs.

Even if mistakes aren’t found when the LPA is submitted to the OPG, they can be discovered when it’s used with banks and doctors, leading to rejection, delays and expense at precisely the moment when it’s most needed.

Being of sound mind

To create an LPA, the donor (the person creating it) must be of sound mind. A solicitor can assess mental capacity, but who ensures this with a DIY LPA? Vulnerable individuals may be pressured into signing documents. If it’s proved that the donor lacked the mental capacity to fully comprehend the implications of their actions, the LPA will be invalid.

Even if the donor possessed capacity at the time of creating the LPA but there

resubmission, the donor could have lost capacity by the time it’s addressed. In such cases, the proposed attorney would need to apply for a deputyship order – a lengthy and expensive process.

Attorneys

Appointing just one attorney is possible, though not recommended. What happens if the single appointment fails, perhaps due to the attorney’s own death or incapacity? Who would then represent the donor? The LPA would be invalidated. Even if two attorneys are appointed, it’s still possible for the LPA to fail if they’re jointly and severally appointed to act together. One attorney’s death or incapacity could render the LPA ineffective. Specialist advice is highly recommended when appointing attorneys.

Ensuring the LPA is done correctly

Once granted and registered, an LPA will generally be in place until you die, even if you subsequently lose your mental capacity.

Laura Cowan, head of Graysons’ private client team and longstanding member of Lifetime Lawyers says: “If you want to make sure everything is done correctly, it’s a good idea to get advice from a solicitor. They’ll make sure that you are giving your power freely and understand what you’re doing. They’ll also make sure that your attorneys know what they’re supposed to do and what the law says.

“Furthermore, solicitors play a crucial role in preventing fraud and abuse of power. If a solicitor doesn’t provide advice on the LPA, it becomes easier for it to be exploited. For instance, an unscrupulous attorney might persuade you to sign something you don’t fully understand or even misuse your funds for their own gain.”

Graysons’ private client team has many years’ experience in helping people ensure that their future is protected by professionally written LPAs. Contact our experts now to discuss your requirements.

Strong START

Petrol and diesel engine used cars are performing well at the beginning of the year.

The used car market remained strong at the start of 2025, with prices falling just 0.1 per cent in January in latest analysis conducted by valuations experts Cap HPI. This puts the month as one of the strongest January’s for used car prices in the last 15 years.

The biggest fall in value came from electric cars, with an average of 1.1 per cent drop in value, hybrid vehicles fell 0.6 per cent, petrol fell 0. per cent, whilst the best performer despite the narrative were diesel vehicles, which saw a 0.2 per cent increase in value overall.

Tax Year End - Planning Opportunities

As the end of the tax year approaches, now is the perfect time to ensure you’re making the most of your available allowances. Smart tax planning can help you protect and grow your wealth while reducing unnecessary tax liabilities.

At Hamnett Wealth Management, we’re here to guide you through key opportunities before the 5th April deadline.

Make the Most of Your ISA Allowance

Your annual ISA allowance is a valuable tax-free opportunity, allowing you to invest up to £20,000 in a Stocks and Shares ISA or keep it in a Cash ISA. Any growth or income earned within your ISA is free from UK tax, making it a crucial tool for long-term financial security. However, if you don’t use your allowance before the end of the tax year, you lose it - so it’s essential to act before the deadline.

Optimise Your Pension Contributions

Contributing to your pension is one of the most tax-efficient ways to save for retirement and the annual pension contribution allowance currently stands at £60,000 (or 100% of your earnings, whichever is lower) and you may also be able to carry forward unused allowances from the past three tax years.

Pension contributions benefit from tax relief at your highest marginal rate, meaning that for every £1,000 you contribute, a basic rate taxpayer pays only £800, while higher rate taxpayers can claim even more in tax relief.

Utilise Your Other Tax Allowances

Beyond ISAs and pensions, there are additional allowances to consider:

• Capital Gains Tax Allowance: The annual exempt amount is reducing, so ensuring you use this year’s allowance of £3,000 could be beneficial if you’re looking to sell assets.

• Dividend Allowance: This is set at £500 for the current tax year, meaning you can receive dividend income tax-free within this limit.

• Gift Allowances: If you’re considering passing on wealth to loved ones, making use of annual gifting exemptions can help you mitigate potential Inheritance Tax.

Proactive tax planning ensures you keep more of your hardearned money working for you. Whether you need guidance on maximising your allowances or structuring your investments tax-efficiently, we’re here to help.

Pension Changes & Inheritance Tax

In the Autumn Budget last October, significant changes were announced by Rachel Reeves affecting pensions and inheritance tax (IHT), which may impact your financial planning strategies.

Key Changes:

• Inheritance Tax on Unused Pension Funds: Starting from 6 April 2027, unused pension funds and death benefits payable from a pension will be included in a person's estate for IHT purposes. This means that any remaining pension funds upon death could be subject to a 40% IHT charge, potentially increasing the tax liability for your beneficiaries.

• Reporting and Payment Responsibilities: Pension scheme administrators will be responsible for reporting and paying any IHT due on unused pension funds and death benefits. This change aims to streamline the tax collection process but may also affect the administration of your pension plans.

These developments underscore the importance of reviewing your estate and pension planning strategies to mitigate potential tax implications.

Consulting with a financial adviser can help you navigate these changes and optimise your financial legacy.

Accelerating CHANGE

As well as looking ahead to International Women’s Day on 8 March, we speak to some local ladies who lead from the front.

Get ready for International Women’s Day (IWD) 2025. Celebrated annually on 8 March, the day celebrates the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women worldwide and draws focus to the issues still preventing the advancement of the women’s movement today. The day emphasises an intersectional and inclusive look at the barriers faced by women worldwide in 2025, calling to action a step forward in solidarity.

The campaign theme for IWD 2025 is ‘Accelerate Action’, highlighting the importance of taking swift and decisive steps to achieve gender equality by increasing momentum and urgency in addressing systemic barriers and biases faced by women across the globe, both in personal and professional spheres.

The past 12 months have seen women

Women also dominated stage and screen, with ‘Wicked’, a female-centred story, solidifying its position as the most successful musical movie adaption ever, and Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour becoming the highest-grossing tour in history. If there ever was a time to celebrate the joy of female achievement, it is now.

IWD not only celebrates the achievements of women, but brings attention to just how much change is

Asked if she had any advice for any other women in business, she added: “Steer your own ship, don’t be railroaded into making career decisions that aren’t right for you. #AccelerateAction is a worldwide call to acknowledge the strategies, resources, and activity that positively impact women’s advancement, and to support and elevate their implemen-tation. Claire Parish The Bridal Box Boutique

It’s home to a wide range of wedding dresses by some amazing designers such as Lazaro and Rosa Clara and has been built on a long held romantic dream of owning a bridal shop.

Claire said: “When I started this journey, it was to put into practice what I’ve always dreamed about, which is to own and run a boutique that is fun, friendly and yet personal and intimate. I always plan on just having one appointment at the boutique at a time and I don’t want to extend the shop beyond what it is now. It’s just beautiful as it is and the feedback I get is wonderful.”

Asked if she had any advice for other women in business, Claire added: “Have the criticise you for being different but that’s what makes you good at what you do. Be kind, it’s a tough world out there and I believe everyone can be friends (even in the same industry).”

I go to trade shows and visit my suppliers to source new brands and stock for the shop. We constantly have new products arriving and I have to buy these usually a year in advance.”
