Welcome to CityMag... WELCOME to 2016. Where did that first month go? It only seems like five minutes ago we were polishing off the turkey sandwiches and leftover mince pies yet we’re already into February. If the festivities (and food) have taken their toll over the last few months, it’s time to clear out the system and start the new year in a positive frame of mind. I let the guys at new boutique gym concept, TRIB3, put me through my paces – their 1,000 calorie workout is an experience to behold. Find out more on page 31. A little indulgence can be a good thing, though, and there’s perhaps nowhere better than one of the pubs or bars that fall under the True North Brew Co umbrella. Created by Kane Yeardley we chat to him about his humble beginnings and his plans for the future, which include a brand new city centre microbrewery. Elsewhere we look ahead to Outlines Festival and speak to Eliza and the Bear, get some top Valentine’s tips from our food and drink experts and check out some great new independent Sheffield businesses. A special thank you as well to Tom J Newell for designing us this fantastic cover. ‘Eye Heart Records’ couldn’t be more appropriate for this month of love and romance.
I DON’T know about you but I always find myself feeling a bit low in those first few weeks after Christmas. That new year enthusiasm seems to take a while to kick in – thankfully it now has. The buzz has slowly crept back into the air and there’s lots going on in Sheffield now, and in the year ahead. We’ll be keeping you updated on a monthly basis so make sure you keep picking up your copy of CityMag. Highlights for me this month include a visit to TRIB3. It’s like a little slice of New York right here on Ecclesall Road – and they’re opening a second location at Kelham Island soon. It’s quickly become THE place to be seen working out but, be warned, it’s an absolute tester. Our editor Richard will testify to that! The students are back, too, after their extended break which always brings the city alive. They’ll be excited, like I’m sure you will be, with the news of lots of exciting developments and openings, including a Reds BBQ, taking place in the coming months. Watch this space and we’ll do our best to keep you up to date. Thank you to all our fantastic contributors once again and we’ll see you next – and every – month from now on. RETRO RESOLUTIONS New takes on the traditional male look for 2016. SO, here we are firmly into 2016 now and marching towards the new spring season. What better time to take a long hard look at ourselves and consider the new emerging trends for 2016 that will influence the way Sheffield’s image-conscious and sharpest looking men look this coming year? Here at Savills on Devonshire Street, we take a keen interest in making sure that our patrons are at the forefront of what is new and trending but also what works for them within the complimentary consultation at the beginning of every service. During 2015 we saw the Pompadour being a popular style at Savills. This shows no sign of disappearing but the look is evolving into one that is more textured and less defined. The zero fade, too, was a popular look last year and 2016 will see more variations of this style but ultimately guys are moving back to wanting more length on the back and sides, transitioning the look into more of a classic cut that is reminiscent of 1960s styles. This versatile style looks slick and groomed for work but can be styled into a more high fashion look for leisure time. The classic side part is still looming large as a cool addition to many hairstyles and it can add an instant update to a classic cut. Think Don Draper in Mad Men but with a sharper look. There’s something about this style that make a man look distinguished, but as there are so many variations, our barbers can easily advise you on what will work best for you, as well as what products from our myriad of internationally-renowned handpicked pomades et al will keep it looking its best. Last but not least, facial hair. Love it or loath it, facial hair is here to stay. However, more
men are moving back into the comfort zone (not least for wives and girlfriends) of the clean shaven look, making our traditional hot towel wet shaves at Savills more and more popular and not just for occasional treats. The full-on Rasputin-like bushy beard, so popular last year, is transitioning towards a calmer, neater shorter beard with cleaner lines that sits closer to the contours of the face. 2015 saw our top team win a host of accolades, – UK’s Best Barbershop, Best Barber & Best Apprentice Barber. With loads of exciting projects for 2016, we can’t wait to get started. You can start off though by downloading our new app to check into the queue even before you get to us or jump the queue altogether and book an appointment via the app. The first quarter of 2016 sees an influx of barbering buddies from the USA, Canada, Italy and Belgium as well as all over the UK come and train with us at our now famous barbering academy. Follow us on Facebook to check out free haircut opportunities on training days. So there you have it guys, next time you are passing Savills, come in and see us, grab a beer and relax. Spartan or cleanshaven, slick-backed, quiffed or pomped, whatever you’re after, Savills barbers are masters of their craft. BEYOND THE OSCARS Take a look at what’s on at The Showroom in February.
IT’S Oscars season, and you can see plenty of legendary performances at the Showroom this February. Breaking Bad fans can see Best Actor nominee Bryan Cranston alongside a luminous Helen Mirren in the fantastic Trumbo. Screen legends Michael Caine and Harvey Keitel reflect on lives and loves in the transcendent Youth, from the director of The Great Beauty. If you’re into cannibals and cowboys, Kurt Russell is back in the saddle for a journey into the dark Wild West in visceral western horror Bone Tomahawk. We also have two very special seasons of film this month. February is LGBT History Month and to celebrate we are hosting three film screenings and parties. First up is All About My Mother – a film from the legendary Pedro Almodóvar. The film explores complex
issues surrounding HIV/Aids, sexuality, gender and faith with warmth and humanity. An LGBT classic, followed by Voto A Pedro – a celebration of all things Spanish. Enjoy some delicious tapas and drink sangria as you while away the afternoon to the sounds of salsa. Fans of Portlandia, Parks and Recreation and Orange is the New Black will love Addicted to Fresno – a hilarious black comedy with a cast including Judy Greer, Natasha Lyonne, Aubrey Plaza and Fred Armisen. Join us after the film for Chick Habit – a high-school disco with a twist. Ru Paul’s Drag Race ain’t got nothing on these girls – see the originals in Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, the third film in the season. Join us as we start our engines for a lip-synching competition to end all others.
The Japan Foundation Touring Film Programme arrives at the Showroom in February with a hand-picked selection of classic and contemporary Japanese cinema. The theme of this year’s programme is ‘Ikiru: The Highs and Lows of Life’, and the films in the season will explore the way that Japanese filmmakers
capture ordinary lives across generations, from World War I to modern day Tokyo. For horror fans, we have the notoriously grisly Audition on the 12 February (the ultimate antiValentine’s) and the crazy, kitsch Hausu on the 21 February. Studio Ghibli fans can escape into the magical forest with My Neighbour Totoro! Join us at The Showroom this February for a month of truly independent cinema.
You can pick up our weekly flyer from the cinema or view all of our listings on our website at showroomworkstation.org.uk/guide

True North Brew Co supremo Kane Yeardley is embarking on his very own flight of fantasy with the opening of a brand new city centre microbrewery.

15 WORDS: Richard Abbey
THE late, great David Bowie has a lot to answer for. Local hero Kane Yeardley, the man responsible for developing the Forum Café Bars brand over the last 20 or so years, is a huge Bowie fan and openly credits him with the inspiration for his latest project (with tongue firmly in cheek), a new microbrewery, which will be housed behind the Forum on Eldon Street. “Being a big fan, I have always wanted some equipment that looked like a little space capsule and this was the closest I could find,” he says. This latest development encapsulates a notable period of change for the group, which recently rebranded itself as True North Brew Co, a logical progression, comments 54-year-old Yeardley: “The old company name (Forum Café Bars) came about when we only had two sites and no real plans for expansion. “Over the past six years the company has trebled in size and the term ‘café bar’ doesn’t reflect the eclectic mix of venues we now operate. True North Brew Co gives us an identity which can be used at all the sites and enables our customers to recognise our sites better.” Yeardley’s portfolio makes impressive reading, a far cry from the old, disused warehouse he bought in 1992. “There was a shortage of small units for businesses to start in so I created a café bar with 20 small units to help get people started,” he explains. Since that inception, the Forum quickly became a focal point for Sheffield’s cool crowd and has remained so from then on. Yes it’s grown in size – it was extended in 2003 with the outdoor terrace added in 2008 – but the core appeal and atmosphere has never wavered, whether you’re popping in for coffee, lunch, after-work drinks or ending your night there. So what’s the key to this success? “There’s a great team behind me, all of whom are involved in the decision making process and shaping of the company,” says Yeardley. “We’ve had successes and failures and the trick is not to get too bogged down by the failures but to learn from them, dust off and crack on. Most importantly, without listening to our customers and giving excellent customer service, we would be nothing.” On the back of the Forum’s success, something Yeardley cites as his biggest achievement, he opened the Halycon bar further up Devonshire Street in 1996, which you’ll now know as The Old House. A big change came in 2005 when the group completely remodelled the upstairs of the Forum, creating the Common Room, giving them three very different but prominent – and hugely popular – city centre venues. >>>

16 At that point, many would have happy to sit back and reap the rewards but Yeardley had other ideas. Perhaps surprising a few people in the process, he took over The York pub in Broomhill to take the group in a whole new direction. “It was a strategy,” he says. “Three town centre sites is enough (for now)! Like all businesses, we have to As part of their rebrand, True constantly evolve to keep ahead North Brew Co have launched a the curve and to ensure we are reward card. As an introductory giving customers what they want, offer, members will receive five not what we think they want. Visit Green, Barnsley and The truenorthbrewco.uk for more. Broadfield, which opened ten days before Christmas and instantly saw a turnaround in trade and customers, something Yeardley is very proud of. Branching out further, the group also took over the running of The British Oak in Mosborough and opened a new venue in Huddersfield, The Picture House. The latest addition is The Riverside in Kelham Island, which will be appropriately rebranded the ‘True North Tap’, although the live music and core vibe will remain. And there are plans for more. “We’ve developed our head office function to enable us to look at doing one to two sites we gets lots of customers who regularly pop into our venues to per year if the right opportunities come up,” explains Yeardley. see what new beers are on.” As a further progression to this growing portfolio, True North The new facility has the capacity to produce 40, nine-gallon Brew Co first brewed and developed a range of beers alongside barrels per brew with a turnaround period of seven to ten days. Claire Monk at Welbeck Abbey Brewery in 2012. This process Not content with just branching out into brewing their own continued over successive years, paving the way for the beer, True North Brew Co also added a gin distill to their development of a dedicated brewery, as Yeardley explains: portfolio in 2014. Under the capable hands of gin expert Rob “We’re fortunate enough to be in a position which sees us Jones, Sheffield Dry Gin has been a huge success. “It’s made in being able to produce our own beer so why shouldn’t we? We very small batches and is enhanced by incorporating some local will still be stocking beers from all the great local and national botanicals into typical gin ingredients,” explains Yeardley. “It’s breweries and having a lot of fun on the way.” the first gin to be made in Sheffield in over 150 years and has Head brewer Bob Phaff came on board in the summer and been carefully designed so that it works in a cocktail as well as redesigned True North Brew Co’s range of regular beers, which it does with just a good quality tonic and slice of orange.” will be joined by numerous weekly one-off brews. After over 20 years in business, a growing portfolio and now “It was made with rhubarb brewery and distillery, these are exciting times, not just for True from my garden, cleared me North Brew Co but for Sheffield as well, and we need to shout out – but the beer was worth about it. Kane Yeardley is clearly a man who knows what his it,” says Yeardley. “What I like customers want. about Bob is he is always Which begs one last question, which David Bowie song would producing small batches of get him on the dancefloor on a Saturday night? interesting beers. 18 It’s time to replenish that drinks cabinet... Whatever your tipple, here are some top drinks to start the new year
Sean Clarke, from Beer Central Ltd, has some warming winter ale recommendations. Cheers!
This month, Portland House manager Tom Purcell proves that England isn’t the only country that can knock out a great gin... NAPUE (NA-PU-EE) – Finland – 46.3%
Recently voted ‘Best G&T in the World’ (when served with Fever Tree Tonic) at the 2015 International Wine and Spirits Competition, this small batch, Finnish gin has a rye base with a nose rich in citrus, cumin and juniper. This is the ‘in’ gin at Portland House right now. The adventurous will be rewarded. NO. 209 – USA – 46%
Named so as it is the gin of the 209th distillery to open in the United States, No. 209 is a crisp, clean gin – characteristics achieved through quintuple (yes my friends, quintuple!) distillation. This gin works deliciously well in a martini or as the base for a classic G&T served with a fresh slice of lime. FOUR PILLARS – Australia – 41.8%
And finally, a gin from our friends Down Under. Made in the Yarra Valley in a copper pot still named ‘Wilma’, this gin is made with local Tasmanian pepperberry, juniper and whole oranges which give this spirit a ‘spiced’ note that rounds off with a full and delicious citrus finish. Fancy giving them a try for yourself? Have a few tasting notes of your own to add? All recommended gins are sold at Portland House, 286 Ecclesall Road along with the perfectly partnered Fever Tree and 1724 tonics. We’re also running a Gin Tasting Session in partnership with Starmoreboss of Sharrow Vale Road on Monday 15 February. Tickets £15. Any questions, please email tom.purcell@welbeckabbeybrewery.co.uk
THORNBRIDGE COCOA WONDERLAND 6.8% ABV 500ml bottle This beautiful Chocolate Porter was Champion Beer of Sheffield last year and it’s easy to see why. Originally brewed with the girls at Cocoa Wonderland (on Ecclesall Road), Bakewell’s Thornbridge Brewery have produced a superb 6.8% porter. Rich, creamy chocolate aromas and a deep luscious chocolatey taste. If you like chocolate brownies, chocolate ice cream, in fact if you love chocolate, this is the beer for you! BUXTON JACOBS LADDER 2.7% ABV 330ml bottle Buxton Brewery have had a fantastic last 12 months and are now firmly placed amongst the UK’s leading craft brewers. Never afraid to push boundaries and flavours, they have been responsible for some of the most memorable beers UK brewing has to offer. Their Yellow Belly collaboration with Sweden’s Omnipollo has achieved legendary status, but it’s not all about 11% stouts. Jacob’s Ladder shows off their renowned brewing ability at the lower end of the ABV scale. This 2.7% easy drinking pale ale is full of hoppy flavour and tastes much stronger. Easy drinking, as you’d imagine, this is a fruity session beer that deserves all the acclaim it gets. CLOUDWATER WINTER IPA 8% ABV 330ml bottle Its less than a year since Manchester’s Cloudwater Brew Co. first started to work their magic, but they launched with great expectations and their beers have been consistently excellent ever since. The Cloudwater focus is on modern, seasonal beers and this hopfilled India Pale Ale is no exception. Crammed full of US and Australian hops, expect a fresh, juicy slap in the face from this one. Easy to drink for 8%, it’s a beer you’ll want to keep revisiting, just to make sure you were right the first time! Beer Central Ltd., Outlet MS3, The Moor Market, Sheffield, S1 4PF. 19 Winter is firmly on the menu for Vicky Wainwright, Chef de Partie at Marco’s New York Italian.
The Return of the Whisky Files
IN this edition, I cover three whiskies, released by the With The Shakespeare’s independent bottlers Douglas Laing, that do completely the Chris Bamford opposite – they aim to encapsulate a particular regional style, by blending malt (known as a vatted malt) from several notable distilleries in the so-called ‘region’. Independent bottlers, rather than producing whisky themselves, buy freshly filled casks from the distilleries and age and bottle the malt themselves, giving themselves access to stock from several distilleries, ideal for producing a ‘vatting’ or releasing single cask bottlings of the highest quality stock.
*
TIMOUROUS BEASTIE – HIGHLAND MALT
* *
ROCK OYSTER – ISLANDS
The Highlands is the largest of the generally accepted Scotch Whisky regions, stretching from just north of Glasgow and Edinburgh to the north coast of Scotland (and by some definitions including several of the islands as well, but not for the purposes of this series). The whisky is named after a famous Robert Burns poem about a mouse, but is in fact anything but timorous, with a big, punchy aroma and full-bodied, sweet taste, with heatherhoney and then fudgy notes. Malts (all barley distilled, this is not a ‘blend’ including lighter grains) come from distilleries including Blair Atholl, Glen Gairoch, Dalmore and Glengoyne.
Single malt whisky is produced on several of Scotland’s many islands – there are two distilleries on Orkney, one on Skye, one on Jura, one on Arran and one on Mull (although it releases whisky under two brand names, Tobermory and Ledaig) and now the Isle of Lewis in the outer Hebrides, as well as on Islay, which is classed as a separate whisky region. Rock Oyster has a distinctively maritime character, with a fresh saltiness and light, sweet peat smoke notes and a sweet honeyed malt base. A light bodied but complex and spicy malt. SCALLYWAG – SPEYSIDE
More than half of Scotland’s whisky distilleries are located in the Speyside region, bounded by the Findhorn and Deveron Rivers, Moray Firth and Caingorm mountains. Scallywag, named after the Laing family terrier, showcases the heavily sherried style of malt favoured by several distilleries in the region, including malts from Macallan, Mortlach and Glen Rothes as well as bourbon cask aged malts. Amber colour, sweet and spicy, with chocolate, stewed fruits and spices from the sherry and vanilla from the bourbon barrels. Less rough and ready than the Highland style and none of the maritime characteristics of the island edition. All three whiskies are available at Shakespeares on Gibraltar Street for £2.90 per 25ml measure.

WINTER, it seems has finally arrived. For most of us this time of year is about wrapping up warm and getting home as soon as possible to get cosy in front of the fire. Eating healthily (new year, new you and all that jazz) being at the forefront of everyone minds, doesn’t have to mean dull and dreary like the weather. Go for flavoursome and satisfying food during these harsh winter months if you’re trying to be healthy. A warm salad say, with wilted veg, sliced steak and caramelised onion or for a veggie alternative try it with beetroot, sweet potato and feta. Spice up your breakfasts and packed lunches with in season blueberries. Add them to smoothies, salads and sauces, pancakes, crumbles and cakes (for a rare midwinter treat) and feel the health benefits of their vitamin C and K. There is a reason they are called super (food). True comfort food though, comes in the form of slow roasted pork belly with a celeriac mash and buttered kale. Kale is in abundance right now, fresh, dark and full of iron it is perfect added to hearty soups and stews too. Follow this with a comforting pudding using seasonal fruit. A Bramley apple and ginger crumble will ensure your night in is a roaring success (just like the fire). * With Valentine’s Day, Mother’s Day and an early Easter this year, we are snowed under (figuratively) with special menu offerings this next couple of months. As if that wasn’t enough, our new a la carte menu is available from 1 February too. Phew, new year, new Marco’s!

27 It’s time to celebrate one of our great heritages… so say the guys at BrewKitchen. Valentine’s Day treat Talking tasty food with Mr Pickles’ Paul Widdowson.
VALENTINE’S Day is the perfect excuse to treat your loved one to a special meal and I like to spend it at home with my favourite – steak and chips. Here at Mr Pickles’ we butcher the whole cow so we offer the full range of steaks. Having tried them all, our team can advise on the different flavours and textures, as well as recommending the best cooking techniques to use. As a general rule we recommend you bring your steaks to room temperature before cooking. We also like to rub oil into the meat, rather than using any in the pan – make sure your pan is hot and smoking too as it prevents the meat from sticking. When it comes to the level of ‘doneness’ we all have our preferences, but we like our steaks rare to medium-rare. Just make sure you rest the meat for a good ten minutes or so before serving. Don’t worry, it won’t go cold and it really does improve its tenderness. Choosing the cut can be confusing, but we can guide you. Sirloin is our most popular steak – it has a good fat to meat ratio so it’s tasty as well as tender and great served traditionally with chunky chips and salad. However, the fillet is still the king of steaks. With a texture akin to butter and very little fat it really is a special cut of meat and perfect in a beef Wellington. Alternatively there’s the Brazilian cut, pichana. Coming from the best end of the rump, it’s typically cooked whole but we can slice it up into steaks. Just serve it with fresh chimichurri for an authentic feel. If you want to try something different then the hanger is for you. Otherwise known as the onglet, this steak comes from the same area as the diaphragm so it has a slight offal tang to it, but it’s full of flavour and rumoured to be the cut that the butcher would often steal away for himself! Alternatively, you could try the flat iron. It comes from the feather blade – we just remove the tough gristle from the centre to create two flavourful and tender steaks. For anyone cooking on a budget we have cuts that cost just £3-4 for two ample portions. The tenderloin is reputed to have been served in restaurants as a faux-fillet and, although it doesn’t have the tenderness of the fillet, it is packed with flavour and a quality steak in its own right. Alternatively, try the flank which is another tasty but lean steak that benefits from a fast and hot cook to keep it tender.
IT’S looking like Sheffield will continue to be at the centre of the boom in artisan brewing, which is amazing news really (it must be all in the water!). The link between master brewer and chef is really quite close, as both involve working with nature’s best raw ingredients and creating a product from these basics which is much more than the sum of its parts. The flavours and tastes that are currently being created are enabling this once micro-industry to grow into something rather exciting within our great city. It wasn’t too long ago that the larger breweries were closing down, but now the brewing revolution is full steam ahead. So, as the city continues to produce some fantastic beers for us all to enjoy, I’m wondering what next for this new era of craft beer? Well, certainly more brewery taps, micro pubs and independent success. Yet as one part of the food and drink industry thrives, so will other areas. I can see the creation and development of new businesses in the years to come, with a real knock-on effect. Support for these new ventures helps create confidence, which in turn leads to a ‘have a go’ mentality when great things can happen – bespoke, specialist producers all committed to delivering some amazing, independently produced goods. From beers, to gin, to bread and all our other favourite stuff, 2016 is time for Sheffield to celebrate one of our great heritages.

L-R: Sales assistant Hannah Bellamy, marketing assistant Becca Linnard, co-owners Gareth and Ashley Dye
Keeping the fun of shopping alive From desirable denim to classic shoes, show-off your Brag Vintage buys with pride. WHEN did shopping for a new outfit become such a chore? Many of us hate shopping so much we’d rather order our clothes online. However, this takes away the joy of rummaging through racks and trying on things that we usually wouldn’t take a chance on. Brag Vintage’s marketing assistant Becca Linnard says we need to restore our childlike fascination with dressing up: “We want to keep the fun of shopping alive. There’s so much colour in our shop – it’s like a big fancy dress box!” Brothers Gareth and Ashley Dye first opened Brag Vintage on Sheffield High Street in August 2014. And what better place to house genuine vintage clothes, than a building which has seen its fair share of old school glamour, when it was a 1960s nightclub owned by Peter
Stringfellow called Down Broadway. What started out as an ebay account in 2011 has fast become a booming business, with a second shop opening on the Lanes in Meadowhall in October 2015. Gareth says they owe their success to appealing not only to young vintage lovers, but to every age and style. “We stock clothes which appeal to a wide spectrum of people. We have a team of relaxed and approachable staff,” says Gareth. “What all these shoppers have in common, is that they want something unique, which is better quality than the typical high street shop.”
Gareth, Ashley and their team hand-pick their garments and accessories from a number of trusted sellers to ensure they are of the finest quality, so they can be proud to call them a Brag Vintage product. As they are all recycled products, created in a time when clothes were made to last, you can also be safe in the knowledge that you are buying something ecofriendly, which will stand the test of time. With a huge range of unique clothing for both men and women, where do we begin? Becca has some ideas. “Levi jeans and denim jackets are big sellers, as are the versatile unisex checked shirts,” she says. “We also stock quality suede, leather shoes and rucksacks.” Still not inspired? fashion accessory, browse their Instagram and Twitter accounts, and if you still can’t face leaving the house to go shopping, they even have an online store at www.bragvintage.co.uk. IT was perhaps apt that House of Pain was playing as I entered Sheffield’s newest gym concept, TRIB3. The boutique bootcamp fitness centre on Eccesall Road blatantly encourages you to ‘share the pain’. After taking part in one of their 45-minute sessions, jumping around was the last thing I wanted to do. So what makes TRIB3 different? The boutique gym concept has tapped into brandconscious, discerning customers who are demanding much more from their experience. There are no shackles of membership or long-term contracts, a pay-asyou-go philosophy offers greater flexibility to suit hectic lifestyles. If you want to go, go, if you don’t, don’t. It’s that easy. The first impression is one of luxury and sophistication. Exposed brickwork and reclaimed wood is juxtaposed with iPad check-in stations and changing rooms that offer every self-indulgence, including Egyptian cotton towels, complimentary toiletries, hair dryers and straighteners. A comfortable, well-stocked shake and smoothie bar, with free wifi, provides a social hub and will become the focus for themed nights, including live music. They even have their own range of gym clothing. Which brings us nicely to the whole point of TRIB3 – the workout. The 1,000 calorie workout to be precise. This is far from your free-for-all
Are you ready to experience the north’s toughest workout? Be part of the TRIB3. generic gym, this is high intensity fitness sessions led by high intensity instructors built around a framework of three disciplines – treadmill, resistance and intensity. Sessions start from £7 and can be pre-booked via their app. The studio, which is more trendy nightclub than bland gym, has room for 36 people and sessions usually last for 45- minutes, working the upper, lower or full body. Basically you’ll rotate around each section, guided by the instructor alongside carefully curated music – everything from Foo Fighters to Cypress
Hill. I started on the resistance section, which utilises dumbbell weights, before moving on to intensity (think squats, jumps and press-ups) and then the treadmill. And then you’ll do it again. And again. I’ll be honest and admit, at 38, my general fitness is not that great so found it tough, really tough. You can work to your own level within the workout – beginner, intermediate, advanced – but the aim of the sessions is to push you to your absolute max – I was definitely maxed out, sweat dripping and my legs
FEBRUARY 2016 / ISSUE 26
had turned to jelly. I was still feeling the burn a few days later. That’s a sign that it’s doing you good, right? Supervised training has been proven to achieve greater results and this guided experience is something that you wouldn’t find in your average run-of-the-mill fitness centre – unless you booked personal training sessions, which would come at an additional cost to your membership. What’s more, because everyone is doing the same thing, it adds a sense of camaraderie, it’s a common experience where everyone is striving towards the same goals. TRIB3 has been brought to Sheffield by Kevin Yates, Dan Summerson and David Cross, all of whom have decades of experience in the leisure and property industry. Kevin has enjoyed major success with similar concepts in London, however, he cut his teeth with the likes of Fitness First, Esporta and Leisure Connection. What TRIB3 is offering is more exclusive retail store than generic gym but by doing one thing and doing it extremely well, they’re almost guaranteeing results. Put the work in and you’ll see the benefit. TRIB3 want you to experience the workout so why not try Burpees and Bubbles on a Thursday or Blood, Sweat & Beers. Who else offers fizz or a cold one after your workout?

In a spin
OPENING HOURS: Monday to Friday 8am-8pm
No need to wash and go, Mr. Bubbles stylishly combines a high-spec laundrette with a trendy coffee bar. SURROUNDED by student accommodation, on the doorstep of Sheffield’s new Chinatown development and just a stone’s throw from the city centre. The Mr. Bubbles team clearly knew they were onto a winning location when they launched their new concept at the bottom of London Road just before Christmas. Stylishly combining a high-spec laundrette with a trendy coffee bar – which sells the most amazing speciality coffee by exclusive London company Square Mile – they’re attracting more than just those in need of a spin cycle. They’ve found a gem of a manager in Samantha Lee. A selfconfessed perfectionist, Samantha has been running her own high-end cleaning company CC Shine for years and jumped at the chance to inject her experience and enthusiasm into a new project. Samantha and the business owners worked with some of the region’s most creative minds including interiors specialist Chloe Darker, Sheffield based artist Liz von Graevenitz and Leeds-based branding and web design company Creative & Marketing to bring Mr. Bubbles to life. Samantha and her Bubbles Team agonised over every item on the menu, every lick of paint and installed only the best laundry equipment to deliver a triumph of style and substance. “We were determined for both aspects of the business to stand alone and be successful in their own right,” explains
Saturday and Sunday 9am-5pm
Samantha. “We wanted people to come to us if they just fancied a coffee and a cake, needed to get their washing done, or just wanted to bring their laptop and work or watch a film while doing both. Free WiFi, air charging and in-table charging points let you stay all day if you want.” As a fully-functioning laundrette, they also offer six self-service washers and dryers, service washes, ironing, dry cleaning and the pioneering ‘Wetcare’, which is being touted as the new dry cleaning. “Wetcare is huge in London as it’s better for your clothes, better for the environment and can wash almost anything. It’s one of the best new technologies in the industry and we’re excited to be able to offer it to our customers.” On the coffee side, the Bubbles baristas serve up speciality coffee as well as Birdhouse Tea Company’s range, including the ‘Full Monty blend’ and the award-winning Kokoa Hot Chocolate. A tasty range of Depot Bakery’s finest baked goods are complemented by Italian inspired sandwiches made fresh every morning in house and a delicious selection of homemade cakes and cupcakes made by Ann Turn. Events and pop-ups are planned in future and they’re encouraging Sheffield creatives to get in touch if they fancy hosting their own. In the meantime, check them out on Facebook and Twitter to keep up with the latest Mr. Bubbles news. LOCAL LEGEND NEEDS YOU
DON’T HATE THE NEWBIES Happy new year everyone! Especially to our current and new members for 2016. So, our first blog post of the New Year is quite a gripe. All over social media there are people moaning about the January rush to the gym and so much negativity regarding new people that come to the gym. Come ladies and gents, we all started somewhere didn’t we? And I am sure we all needed encouragement from others to stick to it. We find it quite disappointing the amount of negativity out there surrounding new members in gyms across the UK. It really doesn’t matter when you start and people need a certain event to happen, to be a reason to get into the gym and commence with a fitness regime. We all need encouragement and we all need support, it just so happens New Year is the most obvious time for reflection. Anytime Fitness in Sheffield support and encourage all levels of fitness, regardless of your ability. We are all equals and we believe in helping you reach your goals. If you want to just have a chat about what facilities we have at Anytime Fitness, or to discuss 1-2-1 training, just give one of our friendly team call on 0114 303 0224 or visit our website www.anytimefitness.co.uk, for more details.
Legendary fundraiser John Burkhill, aka The Mad Man With the Pram, wants to release his autobiography – and he needs your help. Macmillan needs around £3,000 to cover the print costs of the book, which is due to be released later this year. Our parent company, the Regional Magazine Company, have kindly written and designed the book free of charge so it’s ready for press. All proceeds from the book will go towards John’s fundraising dream of raising £1million for Macmillan. It is hoped the book will raise at least £15,000 towards this target. His story will tell people all about the many worthy causes he has supported over the last 30 years, how the loss of his wife to cancer prompted John to focus his support on Macmillan, for whom he has now raised over £325,000.

Discover your city by bike... you’ll be surprised at what you might find. TRAVELLING by bicycle can be exciting, the daily commute can be transformed into a mini adventure; you can take your bicycle to places you wouldn’t normally see in the car and certainly not on the
bus. Bicycles have the power to transform your day from the regular and mundane into the exciting and varied. In Sheffield there are lots of opportunities to take the scenic route to work or just
discover some new places, it’s great if you are househunting! If you don’t believe me why not try it. When you take the alternative route you find things that maybe you had heard about but never bothered to look for when you were in the car. Cycling gives you the opportunity to discover these places. There are lots of nooks and crannies in Sheffield, you can discover them all by bicycle. Kelham Island and Neepsend is just one of those places. We all know it for the excellent beers and pubs it has but do you know what else you can find down there? Well you’ll find art galleries and museums, there are huge open spaces with rabbits aplenty and herons fishing on the river, there is a kayaking club and
now there are cafés and restaurants with awardwinning food and drink. Yellow Arch Studios makes music to your ears and you can listen to new bands practice in empty spaces all around. If you follow some of the streets to their supposed end you’ll find narrow alleyways that take you somewhere new. The history of the area is frozen in bricks and mortar all around you while new developments grow up out of the ground. Take the car and you’ll barely experience anything, do it on a bike and you’ll be able to take in the whole vista. Not sure? Why not hire a bike from Russell’s Bicycle Shed and take a tour you never know where you’ll end up.

OUTLINES FESTIVAL Our status as a festival city is set to grow even stronger... SHEFFIELD’S reputation as a city of music is set to be strengthened even further this year with the addition of another inner-city festival featuring some of the country’s finest established and emerging talent. Outlines, brought to you by the team behind Tramlines, takes place on Saturday 27 February across a number of city centre venues, including Plug, O2 Academy, The Harley, Queens Social Club and Skate Central’s roller rink. UK hip-hop pioneer ROOTS MANUVA takes top billing on the back of releasing his sixth studio album, Bleeds. Newcomer LOYLE CARNER adds to the hip-hop flavour and Sheffield garage/grime collective UNIT 3 will be hosting The Harley’s official after-show party. Influential post-punk band, GANG OF FOUR – widely-acclaimed for their ground-breaking debut album Entertainment! – will also headline. With a tough new radical sound, sole surviving member Andy Gill
has constructed a new entity for exploring enduring fascinations, which makes new record, What Happens Next, their boldest, most selfinterrogating album to date. One of the more intriguing additions to the line-up is Moscow-born electronic artist SHURA. The 23-year-old, whose debut album hits the shelves later this year, has an interesting pedigree, working with the likes of Jessie Ware and having been longlisted for the BBC Sound of 2015. She counts Dev Hynes, Jungle and Kylie Minogue as fans. Elsewhere you’ll be able to catch a host of exciting new artists including NIMMO, GEORGIA, NZCA LINES, PINS, OSCAR and Nottingham rockers, KAGOULE. Adding more local flavour will be HEY SHOLAY and club promoters BANANA HILL will host a takeover at the Queens Social Club. For more information and ticket details visit outlinesfestival.com

Promising a new album full of surprises – and a nationwide tour – Eliza and The Bear are getting ready to take 2016 by storm. You’ve been warned. PHOEBE SEYMOUR
SUPPORTING world famous rock band Paramore, playing to a sell-out crowd of 12,000 at Wembley, being named Hottest Record in the World by Zane Lowe and being favourited by a number of BBC R1 and XFM DJs… the last four years have been a welcome whirlwind for Eliza and The Bear. As the band revel in the critical acclaim of third single, It Gets Cold, from their debut, self-titled album and prepare to headline their own UK tour this month, lead singer and guitarist James Kellegher takes some time out to talk to Phoebe Seymour about the band’s meteoric rise to success. The rise of Eliza And The Bear has been phenomenally quick and you’ve already achieved so much. Do you ever have to pinch yourself?
I think from the outside it seems quite fast, but it feels like we’ve been at it for a long time and we’ve been working quite hard towards it. Because it’s been slow and steady and not happened overnight, it’s kept our feet on the ground and our heads level. >>>

41 At home... Miniature Schnauzer Gordon
Two familiar faces are bringing cool cuts – and much more – to Ecclesall Road.
❬
Rapscallion n. archaic or joc. A rascal, scamp or rogue.
IT was a nickname that stuck immediately. And a very apt one at that. After spending the best part of a morning with Paul Stone and Matthew Varley – owners of the new Ecclesall Road barbers – it’s easy to see why. The cheeky chaps, who have worked together for just over two years, have decided to go it alone and – along with a little help from friends and family – have put their heart and soul into transforming the former vintage clothes shop just down from Hunters Bar and Endcliffe Park. The pair have certainly made their mark on the premises, which they have rewired, re-plumbed, laid new floor (thanks to FMC Flooring Ltd) and added a splash of dashing green. From the Belmont chairs to the faux fireplace and oak-style panelling, the result is very comfortable – and the locallysupplied, freshly-brewed coffee, courtesy of Twin Cafe, certainly helps too. Paul’s brother-in-law made the rustic, wrought-iron and wood stations, which wouldn’t look out of place in a high-end design emporium. The logo, in case you were wondering, was designed by Forgiven tattoo artist Niall Shannon, a friend of Matt’s. Paul and Matt are friendly, easy-going and immediately put you at ease. Too Matthew Varley many barbers seem to take the ‘wham, bam, thank you man’ approach; they want to get you out of the chair as quickly as possible before moving on to the next cut. Paul and Matt are (thankfully) the polar opposite and are happy to listen and take their time to ensure you get the right cut. The shop has even been

set up in such a way – stations are front to back rather than side to side to make it feel like you’re getting a one-to-one, much more personal experience. And why shouldn’t you enjoy it? There’s been a growing trend in barbershops that have gone back to offering a more traditional cutting service and rightly so. It’s become much more acceptable for men to care about their appearance and it shouldn’t just be a chore. Hair cut, beard trim, drink, friendly chat… this is what going to the barbers should be like. Paul started off cutting women’s hair over 15 years ago but quickly moved into men’s and has been based on Ecclesall Road for the last 12 years. Matt cut his teeth in his native Birmingham before moving north to be with his now wife and has been barbering for six years. The guys operate a walk-in service, six days a week, with a wash, cut and finish priced £19.95. Students get a £2 discount (£17.95), head shaves are from £7 and beard trim is from £5. They have also developed a Rapscallions brand of products, which includes paste, clay and pomade (£9.95), texture spray (£9.95) and beard/shave oil (£10.95). Don’t forget to give miniature Schnauzer Gordon a pat on the head, he’s a cheeky chap too, just like his owners. Feel free to drop in anytime.

42 Has the reaction from your fans and the media surprised you?
Yeah definitely, we started this band purely to make music and had no intention of playing big shows or being famous. When we uploaded our first song, people wanted to hear more and added lots of comments and it was like, “OK, we’re doing something right here, lets carry on.” So yeah, massive surprise and we are eternally grateful for everything they’ve done for us such as helping us sell tickets and listening to us on the radio – it’s amazing. You supported Paramore in 2013. How did that come about?
I don’t really know! It was definitely like being dropped in at the deep end. We’d just played to five people and were about to play to 12,000 people at Wembley Arena. It was absolutely insane – the most bizarre feeling in the world! And I was more nervous the second day when my mum and dad came, so it just goes to show no matter how many people are in the venue, if your parents are there, you’re going to brick it!
How would you summarise your new album?
It was a very different process to the way we wrote singles, as these were written separate. For the album, we wanted to demonstrate a bit more of what we could do and I think it will surprise a few people. It’s not just 14 tracks of the same happy indie songs we’ve released before. Half of it was written four years ago when we started out, so it’s a long progression and might even allude to what is going to happen on the next album. You have a gig at The Plug on 16 February. Have you played Sheffield before?
We played Tramlines in 2013 and that was our first festival season playing a main stage, which was huge and we were really excited to play it. We’re really excited to come back to Sheffield and all shows we play round there are amazing, so it’s going to be a good tour. Writing songs in the studio is great, but going out and playing shows is what we love doing most. I think I’m the same as I was [when we started], only doing these huge shows. It’s bizarre, but it’s so much fun to do and I wouldn’t change it for the world.
