Welcome to CityMag... IF this issue of CityMag leaves you feeling hungry, then I can only apologise in advance. Food is certainly top of the agenda and as well as our usual insightful columns from Mr Pickles’ and Beer Central, who talk Yorkshire cheeses and Fathers’ Day beers respectively, we also take a closer look at newcomers Miller & Carter and Firepit BBQ. In addition, Phoebe Seymour grabbed a chat with Oisoi owner and founder Jay Wang while some of Sheffield’s top professional cooks share their kitchen secrets. If you succumb to your pangs and need to redress your calorie balance, there are plenty of sporting events and activities to discover over the summer months. From the Cliffhanger Festival to adrenaline-fuelled aqua parks, there’s plenty to keep you entertained, in mind and body. Kelham Arcade is proving to be a worthy addition to the ‘Island’ – if you haven’t been yet, you really need to. Molly McGreevy dropped by to find out what’s in store (clue: you’ll find everything from barbers to beauty and tattoos to taxidermy). Finally, I’d like to say a big thank you to our cover star, Sarah Darling, whose contemplative ‘Great Tit’ is just, well, great. No jokes please. See you next month.

SUMMER, summer, summertime… time to unwind in the Steel City!! There is so much happening at the moment, what with the success of yet another Docfest, the opening of many new bars and restaurants… we just can’t keep up – well actually we can but there certainly is a wave of energy in the city centre. In this issue you can have a good proper read of what’s going on at OHM (pronounced home without the H BTW!), plus discover what Oisoi is all about and also the lowdown on West Street’s new venue, Firepit BBQ. We also take a closer look at what’s happening at the bottom of St Mary’s Gate; the rapidly developing building work marks a new era for Sheffield’s ‘Chinatown’ quarter. It’s great to see our city evolving in such a fantastic way – don’t forget to keep shouting about it. #shoutaboutsheff. Enjoy the feast! Melanie Jackson Publishing Manager

8 The cast of Out of Order

ON STAGE… OUT OF ORDER 14-17 June / Lyceum Theatre www.sheffieldtheatres.co.uk Rose Butler, Come and Go © Rose Butler

Written by Ray Cooney, Out of Order is a farcical comedy set in the political arena. When Richard Willey (Andrew Hall), a Government Junior Minister, plans to spend the evening with Jane Worthington (Susie Amy), one of the Opposition’s typists, in the Westminster Hotel, things go disastrously wrong – beginning with the discovery of a body trapped in the hotel’s only unreliable sash window. Desperately trying to get out of an extremely sticky situation, Richard calls for his secretary, George Pigden (Shaun Williamson) who, through Richard’s lies sinks further and further into trouble.

EXHIBITIONS… EVERYTHING FLOWS 7 June–3 September Millennium Gallery www.museums-sheffield.org.uk Everything Flows is work by Sheffield-based artists working with painting, sculpture, video, photography and sound. The works are each united, in different ways, by a sense of ‘flow’, from choreographed movement and kinetic motion, through to the fluctuations of narrative. Everything Flows invites visitors to explore these streams of ideas through a diverse range of media: Joseph Cutts’ hypnotic video works revel in the sinuous movement of mechanical objects, while Natalie Finnemore’s blurring of functional and sculptural objects playfully orchestrates our movement around them. Rose Butler’s Come and Go (2016) also explores the flow of the body in an interactive installation revisiting one of the first films produced by The Edison Manufacturing Company. In recreating the original film, which was developed to showcase the mesmeric movement of the medium, Butler reimagines it for today’s surveillance age.

DREAMBOATS & PETTICOATS 26 June – 1 July / Lyceum Theatre www.sheffieldtheatres.co.uk Inspired by the smash hit multi-million selling albums Dreamboats and Petticoats, the West End sell out sensation Dreamboats and Petticoats The Musical features some of the greatest hit songs of the rock ‘n’ roll era. It’s 1961 and emotions are running high as young musicians Norman and Bobby compete to win a national song writing competition – and, more importantly, the attention of the gorgeous Sue! But when Bobby discovers that shy Laura is no slouch on the piano, love and fame beckon.

TRAINSPOTTING LIVE 29 June – 1 July / Leadmill www.leadmill.co.uk This punchy production from King’s Head Theatre and In Your Face Theatre recaptures the passion and controversy of the famous Irwin Welsh novel and globally successful film and repackages it into an immersive production. There are four shows spread across three days and caution is advised – think nudity, strong language, sex, violence, drug/needle use, and lots of mess.

ON SCREEN… ROUGH NIGHT 16 June Anyone remember the, at times silly, late nineties black comedy Very Bad Things? Starring Christian Slater, Jeremy Piven and Cameron Diaz, it saw a stag party go horribly wrong when a stripper/prostitute is accidentally killed. Rough Night essentially flips this on the head – a male stripper is killed at a bachelorette party and amidst the craziness of trying to cover it up, they’re ultimately brought closer together when it matters most. Scarlett Johansson takes the lead.

DESPICABLE ME 3

SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING

30 June Grab your kids (or nieces, nephews, next door neighbours) for the third episode in the hugely popular – and funny – Despicable Me series. After the slightly disappointing Minions, Gru (Steve Carrell) makes a welcome return – and this time he’s brought his twin brother, Dru. Now married, Gru faces off against Balthazar Bratt, a former child star who has grown up to become obsessed with the character that he played in the eighties. Things don’t go quite according to plan when Dru suggests they team up for one last criminal heist to take the diamond that Bratt has stolen.

7 July Following his brief – and scene-stealing – cameo in Captain America: Civil War, Tom Holland’s Spider-Man gets the screen all to himself (hint: Iron Man’s there too). Fresh from his escapades with the Avengers, he must now attempt to balance his life in high school with his career as the webslinging superhero. But when a new threat emerges in the form of Vulture (Michael Keaton), can he really take a back seat?

RUM FESTIVAL 24 June Plug www.the-plug.com Take a rum journey around the world, tasting rare and special craft rums from the West Indies, Cuba, South America and the United States. Tickets are £11 (+ booking fee) and doors open at 12pm.

DRAMA...

Following 5 Star Wrestling’s 2016 debut, a tournament that featured the epic Rey Mysterio v AJ Styles match, it’s back in Sheffield once again. Most champions would rest up but since leaving WWE, John Morrison has been determined to show the world that he is one of the most talented performers the wrestling industry has to offer. As part of the ‘Dominant Wrestling Championship’, he will put his title on the line once again.

‘The Best Of ’ is a gathering of Jimmy Carr’s very best jokes along with brand new material for the ultimate comedy show. A man who has devoted his life to crafting perfect jokes and has left a trail of laughter in his wake, Jimmy’s new tour will distil everything we love to laugh at and be shocked by, into one incredible, unparalleled night of entertainment.

TRIBES 30 June – 22 July Studio Theatre www.sheffieldtheatres.co.uk

COMEDY...

JIMMY CARR

Billy was born deaf into a hearing family. In the arguments and jokes around the kitchen table, he has never been treated any differently to the rest of them. But when he meets Sylvia, who teaches him sign language, he starts to wonder if his family have ever really listened to him at all. Deeply moving and shockingly funny, Tribes is about the need we all feel to belong, to speak and to be understood.

10 Berlin Syndrome

The Graduate

Baby Driver

SUMMER is officially here! And if you’re a student that can only mean one thing, a long, long summer. A blissful stretch of time with no exams, studying or pressure. But let’s be honest, the novelty does wear off after about two weeks and money starts being an issue. Looking for something to do on the cheap is hard. Luckily the Showroom’s got a solution for you; with our new CINE 26 membership you can get tickets for all our brilliant films just £4.50, which should keep you occupied. If great cinema isn’t incentive enough for you we also have an ever-changing range of delicious homemade ice cream, which you can also collect points for on your CINE 26 card. To be eaten in or out of the cinema – your choice. Whilst you’re enjoying all your cheap cinema tickets keep your eyes peeled for the FRating stamp, which will start showing up on lots of our films. F-Rating is a way to

Aged 26 and under? All cinema tickets are only £4.50 at the Showroom. highlight women in films and will indicate whether the film was directed or written by a woman or stars a female lead in her own right. F-Rating is a great response to the lack of representation of women in cinema and gives the audience an opportunity to support these films. So, what is there to watch? Well we’ve picked out some of our favourites for this month. For all of those who wished maybe they weren’t stuck in the UK this month we’ve got Berlin Syndrome, which will probably make you very smug you’re not backpacking anywhere. Berlin Syndrome is a tense psychological thriller that

aptly takes its name from Stockholm Syndrome, as it studies that evolving relationship between backpacker turned captive Clare and her holiday romance turned captor Andi. If you’ve just finished Uni you might feel a bit lost like Dustin Hoffman in The Graduate, luckily the rerelease is out this June with plenty of summer holiday tips, like lazing about in the pool or crashing a wedding. New out this month is Baby Driver, a film about a young getaway driver who uses his own personal playlist to be the best in the game. Not only is this film a homage to the holy trinity of nineties heist films; Point Break, Reservoir Dogs and Heat, but each scene has carefully been built around

each individual track from an incredible playlist. Lastly, you might be feeling a bit down about not making it to any festivals this year, but there’s loads going on in Sheffield, including the Migration Matters Festival. The Showroom will be screening four films as part of Migration Matters including: Fire at Sea and Those Who Jump. Entrance is ‘pay what you can’, which also means it’s a festival that won’t skint you.

11 Yorkshire Cheeseboard Mr Pickles’ Paul Widdowson talks about the benefits of buying cheese from an independent store.

WHEN people think of Yorkshire cheese, they most likely think of the crumbly and slightly tangy Wensleydale. But, in fact, Wensleydale cheese is made up and down the country and it is only when it is made in the designated area of Wensleydale that it can be called Yorkshire Wensleydale. Confusing isn’t it? After all, you’d think that a cheese named after a dale in Yorkshire would be made there. But this confusion is just one of the many reasons cheese lovers choose to shop at an independent store, such as Mr Pickles’Yorkshire Food Emporium, rather than the supermarket. Not only do staff know where the cheese is from, it’s likely that they’ve sourced the cheese from one of the smaller cheesemakers that you may not have come across before. And, as well as getting the chance to try something new, buying from small cheesemakers means that each one has been made to a traditional recipe, with real love and care. And the milk will, in most cases, have been sourced from dairies local to them. Indeed we stock

Ribblesdale Cheese Company’s cheese, which is made with milk sourced direct from single herds of cows, goats and ewes. Of course, provenance counts for nothing unless the cheese tastes good. Which is why a good cheese shop will always offer tasters if you’re looking for something in particular or unsure that a certain cheese is for you. We think this is important because, not only is taste subjective, each cheese tastes different. For instance one of our brie style cheeses tastes completely different to a brie from another cheesemaker – despite both being made in West Yorkshire. And all of our Wensleydale cheeses are unique in terms of flavour and texture. Although our region is famous for Wensleydale, we have a great variety of cheese in store. With blue, farmhouse, cheddar, smoked, goats’ cheese, ewes’ cheese, halloumi and more, you might be forgiven for questioning whether it all came from Yorkshire! We also stock a wide range of Yorkshire made chutneys, crackers and pickles. Here at Mr Pickles’ Yorkshire Food Emporium, our team of food experts have tasted every cheese in store and can make recommendations based on your taste and requirements. If you’re looking for a cheeseboard to round off a special meal or to buy a selection as a gift, why not head to our Abbeydale Road based store and ask a member of our team for assistance? We’re open from 8am to 8pm, every day.

NO PLACE LIKE OHM SHEFFIELD’S newest bar OHM is now open – the cocktail bar takes the place of The Hop in West One, Fitzwilliam Street. With an aim to become the destination for post-work drinks and weekend dancing, OHM serves up its own range of twisted cocktails and fancy street food. The upstairs has been converted into a private, bespoke bar, which will be used for cocktail masterclasses and private parties. A team of nearly 40 staff trained for a month in preparation for the launch, with bartenders passing a special set of exams before they were let loose on the cocktail menu. The kitchen team have also been busy, creating a menu of pizza, chicken and burgers with an upmarket twist. Speaking to CityMag, owner Matthew Ray said: “All the guys involved are from Sheffield, we love Sheffield. We want to give the people of Sheffield what they want, which is a great experience, good quality cocktails, value and a great time. It’s what everybody wants.”

Words: Molly McGreevy

The next stop on your night out just took a turn for the better...

Matthew hopes OHM will give Sheffielders a new destination when it comes to going out in the city centre. He said: “I think we will be a really good addition to city centre circuit and West One – we’ve got Vodka Rev opposite and we’ve got Be At One nearby. “Leopold Square has had a bit of resurgence with Cubana, The Botanist and Kuckoo. Now you’ve got some really strong bars in the city with us, Revs and The Forum – it’s all good for Sheffield’s nightlife, it’s revitalising it.”

Affordable luxury With a new menu and a new look, OISOI Oriental Restaurant & Food Market should be top of your list of places to visit. SHEFFIELD has always had a strong multicultural dining scene, but one is calling itself “the visionary” of the Oriental dining scene… Originally opened as a premium artisan Oriental food market in September 2015, OISOI in St Paul’s Place Sheffield city centre is revolutionising the way we view and enjoy Oriental cooking. Affordable luxury is the OISOI motto.

STORE DESIGN THE surroundings, designed by Italian company Schweitzer Projects, are so impressive that OISOI was nominated as the Best Interior at the Retail Week Interiors Awards in 2016. Simple yet stylish, the interior was created by the same company who designed shop fittings for the likes of Harrods and Waitrose’s flagship store at Canary Wharf in London. It’s not just the modern lighting and upholstered chairs that make the restaurant stylish, even the crockery has been carefully selected and patented by OISOI as to the OISOI dining experience and standards.

‘Kimchee Mama’

OISOI Oriental Cuisine

MOVING onto the food, fresh ingredients and a comprehensive range of choices are key. In OISOI, you will be able to eat and taste the most original style of Oriental cuisine with thoughtfully selected ingredients. If you are a seafood lover, you won’t be disappointed. Their signature dishes include lobster curry and lobster noodles. “We emphasise the importance of fresh ingredients,” says owner and founder Mr Wang. “All our ingredients are air shipped from Korea to Sheffield weekly by the award-winning artisan Kimchee maker, Mrs Park Kwang Hee. “We call her The Kimchee Mama. She’s been awarded by UNESCO the Intangible Cultural Heritage Award. Meanwhile, our South East Asian curries are all prepared and handmade inhouse by our head chef Mr Wayson Ang. He grew up in Malaysia and has brought his most authentic flavours to Sheffield with his interpretation. “It is also important that we fully train our staff so they are knowledgeable and able to appreciate the dedication that goes in and the story of our food.”

OISOI Tea & Patisseries OISOI has its own approach when it comes to tea and patisseries. Just like how we usually our afternoon tea with small bites and English breakfast tea, or Japanese style with matcha tea and wagashi caskets, OISOI has an in-house patisserie and their desserts are every bit as delectable. Every cake and dessert is handmade in-store and created from premium flours and chocolates – and unbelievably, they are all purposely designed and created with reduced sugar content, in combination with their thoughtfully sourced premium artisan yoshan oolong tea from Taiwan. Yoshan tea has been an artisan family tea grower and maker in Taiwan since 1868. They are now in their sixth generation of producing only hand-picked and fermented oolong tea leaves. Many types and flavours of the loose tea can be found in OISOI – and this is the only place you will be able to find this premium oolong tea in the UK.

OISOI GRAND BAR When it comes to drinks, OISOI has a very different approach to creating their own standards. OISOI’s grand Oriental cocktail bar do not follow standard commercial recipes. They require their bartenders to understand and appreciate the flavours of each spirit that OISOI uses for their own creations of Oriental themed cocktails. It is vitally important to understand how to balance flavours to deliver a sophisticated and exotic cocktail with only fresh ingredients and garnishes. They also stock a wide range of purposely selected wines, champagnes and proseccos to match their high standard of food, that won’t break the bank. Open every day from 11.30am, you can relax and have a mid-morning spot of tea or opt for something stronger with a hearty and healthy lunch. OISOI is quickly building a strong reputation in Sheffield and Mr Wang has ambitious plans for the future of the company. “Sheffield is a great city and has recently embraced a lot of change,” he says. “OISOI is one of the single largest investments to be carried out in the history of the city for a restaurant. “There are so many franchises in Sheffield, I’m proud to have an independent business. We are planning to open two more branches with completely different offerings in Sheffield before expanding to other cities.” Look out for the launch of OISOI’s brand new menu, as well as their gorgeous new crockery, this July. As their core value and vision, OISOI never stops and strives to provide a truly unique and unforgettable dining experience that is beyond your expectations.

CityMag tries the Miller and Carter experience (with toddler).

THE old Toby Carvery at Parkhead (we were never a fan) has had a huge facelift, and has been transformed into a much more upmarket Miller and Carter Steakhouse, part of the Mitchell & Butler group. Inside, expect décor that brings ‘gentlemen’s club’ to mind… lots of brass, velvet soft furnishings, low hung lighting and maybe one too many bulls on the walls. Food-wise it’s a beef heaven – on the bone, off the bone, a long bone 30oz tomahawk cut and 16oz chateaubriand. All steaks are served with parsley butter, seasoned fries, a slice of onion loaf and a balsamic glazed tomato, plus a lettuce wedge (not as fancy as it sounds) and steak sauce. The rest of the menu features a tempting range of brisket, lamb rump, ribs, you name it. We had the little one in tow,

and although reasonably well behaved for a three-and-a-halfyear old, keeping him happy is the priority to keeping us happy, especially when dining out. The little man had a great, interesting menu to choose from and opted for the chicken lollipops. He loved them! One thing we did have to do was prop him up on his chair with jackets, he’s too big for a high chair but the seats are low for little ones. When it came to ordering, I had made the mistake of cooking a huge T-bone steak the night before so we veered away from the steaks – having tried the steaks before I can say they are pretty darn good. Instead we went for the lamb rump with dauphinoise potatoes and rack of ribs with sweet potato fries, the food did not disappoint – all cooked very well and perfectly seasoned.

L-R: General manager Arlindo Gouveia, restaurant manager Rich Bardsley and chef Matt Eggo

Firepit BBQ is at 138 West Street, Sheffield S1 4ES, find out more at www.firepitbbq.co.uk

If you like your food cooked ‘low and slow’, Sheffield’s latest venue is right up your strada. They also do a mean cocktail to boot. NOW Firepit BBQ, West Street’s new barbecue restaurant, has been open for a couple of weeks, and officially opened by the Lord Mayor of Sheffield, Councillor Anne Murphy and the Sheffield Steelers, we spoke to manager Richard Bardsley to talk menus, cocktails and more. Hi Rich, you’ve been open for a couple of weeks now, how are things going?

Really well, nearly every bit of feedback has been five stars. The food is going down a storm, we’ve had loads of bookings – people seem to love the steaks and barbecue meat in particular, which is what we specialise in. We had 80 people come down to our VIP launch, including the Mayor and some of the Sheffield Steelers, and a very nice time was had by all. Who else is on the team at Firepit BBQ?

Our head chef Matt Eggo spent three years at Smoke BBQ, now he wants to put his own stamp on that style of food. He’s also worked in various independent restaurants in the city, and has used his experience to create his own menu and own flavours especially for Firepit BBQ. Our general manager Arlindo Gouveia used to live in the States and has a total passion for smoked and BBQ food.

You mentioned cocktails, tell us more about your bar offering.

We’re perfect for late night drinkers who want a drink but don’t want to be in a nightclub or student bar, they want a nice drink in a nice atmosphere. We’ve got a nice range of wines and a good fridge of craft beers from the UK and US. We’ve spoken to a few local breweries, and I’m sourcing local brews at the moment. We want to be known as a premium, but unpretentious, place to drink and enjoy your evening. We offer table service all day every day, you’ll get looked after at the table. We’re more than happy for people to just pop in for a couple of cocktails, but if they get peckish our kitchen doesn’t close until the bar does. We’ve stocked the bar with premium spirits, including gins, whiskeys and rums – some of which you definitely won’t see anywhere else in the city. We’ve got two of our favourite flavours of Buss509 gin, Killer Queen vodka, made in honour of Freddie Mercury, U’luvka vodka from Poland and a huge selection of other spirits. Thanks Richard.

Firepit BBQ offer 241 cocktails on Thursdays and Fridays between 3pm and 6pm and an after-work social deal, which includes a 12-inch pizza and bottle of prosecco for £19.95

Some of Sheffield’s top professional cooks share their kitchen secrets.

JUNE 2017 / ISSUE 42

19 Lavang’s chef and co-owner, Jay Kauser, cooks a simple dinner for you to try at home.

JAY’S ONE POT BIRIANI Preparation Time: 25 minutes Cooking Time: 25 minutes

INGREDIENTS (SERVES 2) 400g Basmati Rice 1 tsp Turmeric 3 tbsp Sunflower oil 1 Red onion 1 Tomato 5 Cloves garlic 1 Red pepper 1 Chicken breast 1 tbsp Coriander powder 1 tbsp Chilli powder Pinch Salt (to your liking) Pinch Pepper (to your liking) 2 tbsp Lemon juice 1 Courgette 6 Spring onions 1 Bunch fresh coriander 2 Red pepper chillies

METHOD 1. Place the rice and water (double quantity of water to rice) in a saucepan on a low heat, add the turmeric and mix and bring to the boil. The rice will be ready when the water has evaporated. To check if ready, pick a grain and squeeze, if it sticks to your hand it’s ready. 2. Pre-heat the sunflower oil in a saucepan on full heat. Finely chop the red onion, tomatoes, garlic and half the red pepper and add to the saucepan. Whilst this is cooking, chop the chicken breasts into cubes and place into the saucepan once the remaining ingredients have become golden. Leave this to cook for 10 minutes on a low heat. Add the coriander powder, chilli powder, salt and pepper and stir. Now add the lemon juice, mix, and leave to rest for five minutes. 3. All the contents from the chicken pot can now be added to the rice (this should be when there is still a little water left with the rice), Add chopped courgettes and mix thoroughly. Add chopped spring onions, fresh coriander and red pepper chillies on top, Do not mix. Place the lid on the saucepan and leave until rice has cooked completely – any excess water should be left to simmer until evaporated.

Tell us about your business.

We are a small, family-run business who pride ourselves on offering a bespoke dining experience to our customers who require event catering, large or small. We started off selling pies like my nan used to make, which we still do but have branched out as, based on customer feedback, we found that they wanted something a little different from others. What about your bespoke menu?

If someone gets in touch with us we will invite them to come and see us, work out a menu and get them to sample the food once we’ve agreed. We work to the needs of the customer. What are you working on at the moment?

We’re planning a themed menu for the Tramlines crew to took into over the weekend of the festival. Enjoy! Recently we catered for Abbeydale Brewery’s open day event, they were lovely people. New Era Development reveal plans for a China-UK Business Incubator. NEW Era Development, the company responsible for the ‘Sheffield Chinatown’ near Bramall Lane have announced plans for a China-UK Business Incubator (CUBI) at the development. The announcement came from Jerry Cheung, managing director at New Era Development and Professor Bradley Barnes from Sheffield Business School, during a conference hosted by New Era and Sheffield Business School at Hallam University which was attended by more than 84 companies. New Era Square has been named Sheffield’s Chinatown and aims to be symbolic of Chinese heritage and culture, whilst representing China firmly in the 21st century, with a contemporary architectural design and a high-end finish. The aim of the Square is to bring the multi-cultural community of Sheffield together in a cosmopolitan space, to be filled with the hustle and bustle of student living, thriving businesses, shops, restaurants and street food kiosks. The CUBI will be perhaps the most innovative and pioneering element of the New Era Square project, which will help to build new trade links between UK and China. The building is set to open in late 2019, when phase two of the

Chinatown development is due to be finished The CUBI will offer a whole host of services to Incubator residents, including office premises, virtual office and reception services, business contacts, advice and community links, a knowledge-sharing network and access to many services from marketing and translation to accountancy and legal support. CUBI will also play host to a restaurant and banqueting suite and high spec conference and meeting facilities. Jerry Cheung said: “I’m very grateful that my investor, my shareholders, let me deliver this dream of mine, this Incubator. A lot of people would think that ‘there’s no business case for this’. “There’s a massive business case for the city, to connect business, generate jobs, and there’s a case for the Chinese community as well, because I have a passion of helping the Chinese community to

integrate into the society.” Although the Chinatown development and CUBI are yet to open, they are already making a significant contribution to forging links between Sheffield and China. Renaissance International Railway Service Ltd, an international railway network that connects Europe and the UK to cities across China with freight transport that is faster than sea and cheaper than air freight, opened a Sheffield office in January 2017. Future plans between New Era Development and Renaissance International Railway Service include bringing direct rail networks to the UK via London, Sheffield and Doncaster. There are also plans to create a distribution centrein the Sheffield City Region for Chinese e-commerce businesses and manufacturers, for their distribution into Europe. New Era Development hopes

to help business break into the market of exporting goods to China, and take advantage of the opportunities brought about by the new developments. Jinping Xie, project manager for the China-UK Business Incubator said: “I believe the contributions to Sheffield’s economy that the CUBI can bring are very real and now is the time for local businesses to get involved. If Sheffield businesses want to start building links with China, they won’t need to wait until the building is finished because the key principles of the Incubator are already there and we are ready to get our hands stuck in.” For further information about the China-UK Business Incubator and updates about the New Era Square project visit www.ned-uk.com. Bigger, better and with more choice... check out the new Rassams Creamery. RASSAM Ali is coming up in the world, and has finally realised his dream of opening one of the UK’s biggest dessert bar. The new premises, at the bottom of London Road, serve up a huge range of delicious desserts including ice cream, cakes and pastries as well as traditional Asian and Arabic sweet treats. They also stock stunning smoothies and milkshakes with popular flavours including Snickers, Maltesers and Mint Aero. It’s been a long journey for Rassam who has held the ambition of becoming a successful businessman since the age of 14, when he first started working in his father’s corner shop. After scrimping and saving and completing a college course, Rassam purchased the business from his father and quickly set about putting his own stamp on things by introducing homemade milkshakes to his customers. They were extremely popular. Buoyed by this success, and with a little help from his friends Irfan Mohammed and Alawi Alyazidi, he opened his very first dessert bar in June 2012. A second branch followed in January 2015 – indoor seating and indoor eating mean even greater changes and improvements but his customers quickly liked what they saw (and ate), so much so that he was already plotting a move to bigger premises. Rassams Creamery is certainly the biggest dessert bar in Sheffield, if not the UK, and knowing Rassam, this is only just the beginning. Molly McGreevy heads down to 92 Burton Road... what will she find at Kelham Arcade? With a colourful Pete McKee mural standing out against the industrial backdrop of Kelham Island, it’s hard not to miss the Kelham Arcade at 92 Burton Road. Neighbour to Peddler, Depot Bakery and Russell’s Bike Shed – Kelham Arcade has grown massively since it opened last year. Not only has the building gained an original McKee – Pete wanted to paint a new wall, but one away from the city centre – but this once abandoned space used as a playroom for a couple of model railway enthusiasts, is now home to a collective of makers, curators and independent businesses. To find the arcade look for the huge mural of a puppy with his nose in a packet of Hobnobs. Step inside, and you’ll find a maze of the beautiful, interesting and artistic, CityMag popped in to say hello.

ONE of the arcade’s original tenants, Gravel Pit Homeware is where you’ll find a stunning collection of homewares and work from local artists, curated by Danny Mager. A maker himself, Danny first began making concrete pots and terrariums to cure the boredom that came between jobs working in sound for TV and film. He works with wood, concrete and glass to make the most beautiful products, which line the corridor of Kelham Arcade. “I started off by making concrete pots for a couple of friends that had an interiors shop then my brother showed me how to make terrariums and I absolutely loved it. I started making more, started making for other people, then a friend got offered this space and suggested fitting out this corridor with some of my wares,” said Danny. “Then we came to the conclusion I might as well have a little shop in here, so we kitted it out with my own stuff and then started selling a lot of local people’s stuff.” The rest of his stock – think prints, ceramics, books, graphic novels, toys – comes mostly from local artists who have contacted Danny via social media. JUST next door to Craft is Purdys Hair Salon. Fun and colourful (and dog friendly, winner!), Purdys was established in 2013, and when owner Jane Infanti was looking to move from Abbeydale Road to a bigger premises, she decided to move to Kelham Island. Jane said: “I came to Kelham Arcade by chance and just got a good feeling about the place, I wanted to be amongst like-minded creatives. Everyone has been really friendly, and my old and new clients love it.” The salon takes a trip back in time to the 1940s and 1950s, with bright blocks of colour bringing the place to life. It’s not just the décor that’s vintage, the salon specialises in cuts, colours and styles that hark back to the good old days. But if retro isn’t your thing, owner Jane Infanti’s team will still snip your hair into something magical and modern.

A start-up and original tenant, it’s the only place in Sheffield to find New York-based JS Sloane products, and with 15 years of hairdressing experience, Lawrence has built up a dedicated following. Teamed with overseeing the running of the Arcade, he’s a busy man, but we managed to catch a few minutes with him. Lawrence said: “The idea was to get something going, a little bit of a collective where everyone bounces off each other, that was the plan. “It’s amazing, it’s really good, and it’s nice to see the area growing as well. It’s coming up round here, definitely.” Hot towel shaves are also available and Lawrence works alongside barber Chloe Price.

ONE of the most established businesses in the arcade, Thread Architects has been around since 2013. With a team made up of exSheffield University architecture students, what attracted Thread to the area, unsurprisingly, was the blend of old architecture and new ideas that Kelham Island has become so famous for. Company director Andy Thomas said: “We were both at Sheffield University in the late nineties and the area was mainly the end of the old industrial with not much happening. “Now we have seen the area grow, it is an interesting place to be and a lot of other people thinking that, it’s changed so much in two years.” Thread often hold open office events, and have an open door policy so people can pop in and have a chat.

Just off the corridor inhabited by Gravel Pit is Nature of the Beast, an antique taxidermy, art and curiosities shop inspired by the natural world. Owned by Jodie Davidson, the shop is one of the newest additions to Kelham Arcade, and is home to the most wonderful of weird. Jodie trawls car boots, flea markets and the internet for products, which can range from a vintage pineapple and glass sets to a taxidermy pheasant, and the walls are adorned with art. “It’s always been a hobby of mine,” said Jodie. “These are all antiques, I get them from here, there and everywhere.” Before setting up on her own (with the help of her dog, who is often at the shop), Jodie worked in sales and chose Kelham Arcade to be supported by other creative people. She said: “I’ve just got a good gut feeling about it, there’s a lot of creative people here and everyone is in the same boat. We really get on, and I can bring my dog into work.”

Taking up a ground floor spot is Cry Baby Tattoo, made up of long time tattooists and friends Kelly Smith and Polly Taylor, who have almost 20 years of experience between them. Before taking the plunge and moving to Kelham, the pair worked in other tattoo studios in Sheffield, but when Polly spotted the space and asked Kelly to come on board, she couldn’t resist. Kelly said: “I was about to quit my job and go travelling when Polly asked if I wanted to join forces. I went from having no commitments to quite a lot of commitment but it was a really good move.” For Kelly, Kelham’s rising popularity was a big pull, and despite

A Sheffielder, Karina made the move across the Pennines to Manchester before doing a stint in London to complete a masters degree and returning to the Steel City, bringing her business in tow. The move to Kelham Arcade was, in her own words, a happy accident. She said: “I knew Danny from a previous life in the late nineties, when I got back in touch it seemed ideal. My contract was up at another studio and I remembered the conversation with Danny and saw the positive opportunity, it feels so exciting at the moment round here.”

WHETHER it’s running, mountain biking, climbing, or even canoeing, Sheffield has always been a city full of outdoorsy types. From 7-9 July, Sheffield city centre will once again be transformed into a playground for outdoor adventure when Cliffhanger Festival comes to town once again, this time bigger and better than ever. The festival will kick off at 5pm on Friday July 7 and is completely free for everyone. The Friday will see a range of attractions come to the city centre, including live music, activities, demonstrations and refreshments from a range of food and drink outlets. Then, on Saturday and Sunday, Sheffield will be transformed into a giant outdoor playground, with professional demonstrations and activities in sports including climbing, mountain biking, running, skateboarding, orienteering and much more.

The star attraction will be the BMC British Bouldering Championships, where the nation’s strongest male and female climbers will battle it out on a purpose-build bouldering wall on Devonshire Green. Gary Clifton, major events manager at Sheffield City Council, said: “For the first time last year, we decided to hold the ever-popular Cliffhanger festival in the city centre rather than in a park, and this was an undoubted success. “The city centre location and the removal of an admission fee brought thousands more people to the event, including more young people, students, and those who perhaps wouldn’t otherwise have thought to try out activities such as bouldering, slacklining or skateboarding. “The location also fits perfectly with Sheffield’s status

as The Outdoor City and our reputation as the UK’s leading destination for people seeking that unique combination of outdoor adventure and city centre culture.” Last year’s activities also included parkour, dry canoeing, skateboarding, a diving pool and kids’ bouldering wall, plus the chance to abseil down St Paul’s Tower for charity, or to have a go on a slip-and-slide down Howard Street. Cliffhanger festival is sponsored by Sheffield BID (Business Improvement District). BID Manager Diane Jarvis said: “Cliffhanger is one of the city centre’s most exciting and unique events. Sheffield BID is delighted to be able to support this major event and to help grow this amazing fixture on the summertime calendar. It is an event that lets the city centre shine and show all the great things it has to offer.”

“The city centre location and the removal of an admission fee brought thousands more people to the event, including more young people.”

Sheffield’s new run routes are signposted to help joggers find their way. By Molly McGreevy. WITH more than 800 parks, woodlands and green spaces, Sheffield has already achieved its dream of becoming The Outdoor City. Now, getting for a run in Sheffield is even easier, with the launch of signposted run routes at seven new locations across the city, as part of phase two of the Run Route initiative. Thirty signed routes have been created at 14 locations across the city, providing simple-to-follow trails through Sheffield’s parks and woodlands. At each location, there are different routes, each colour coded according to their difficulty, ranging from easy up to challenging. The routes are spread across the city centre and the suburbs, from urban city centre routes to Thorncliffe in the north,

Rivelin in the west, Shire Brook in the east and Ecclesall Woods in the south of the city. Greg Fell, Director of Public Health at Sheffield City Council, said: “As The Outdoor City, Sheffield is becoming increasingly well-known for its unique blend of outdoor activity and city culture. “And what is particularly special about the run route project is that the signed trails are not confined to spaces which people may traditionally associate with walking or running. We’ve tried to incorporate these new routes into communities across Sheffield, to ensure that everyone, regardless of where they live, can join in.” England Athletics, who helped to fund the project, hope that by making running routes more accessible, people

will try them out with family and friends. The organisation is encouraging people to run with others and to find friendly group runs through its website www.runtogether.co.uk. Matt Birkett, Head of Participation at England Athletics, said: “Through further research we also know that running with others helps to sustain a running habit. Those that run together with others are 23 per cent more likely to be regular runners than those that only run on their own. “Therefore, England Athletics through RunTogether is attempting to encourage people to run with other people.” The new phase of the project was launched with the help of trained community run leaders, supported by Accelerate,

Attercliffe. The trainers led runs around the latest city centre routes at lunchtime, encouraging people to explore the city in their lunch hour. Don’t worry if you missed out; more organised runs will take place in June as part of Move More Month. These will be held at Firth Park at 11am on Saturday 24 June, meeting at Henry’s Café, and from the car park of High Hazels Park on Friday 30 June, starting at 7pm. If you prefer to explore alone maps and descriptions of the routes, as well as videos, can be found on The Outdoor City website (www.theoutdoorcity.co.uk). Or if you prefer your information on paper, handy pocket-sized leaflets are also available, detailing each of the run routes, with photos and maps.

ples m a s s r ande on to the S h a n Han est additi er Valley the lat ions at Rothultimate attracty Park – theerience. Countr r water exp outdoo

I PAUSED at the top of the free fall supreme before taking a heart-pounding, exhilarating free fall into the water, and then I was pulling myself out of the depths onto the towering Jungle Joe. Dripping wet and exhausted, you could be forgiven for thinking the BBC had decided to bring back ‘Total Wipeout’ and I was auditioning for a starring role but no, I was visiting the UK’s largest aqua park – and best of all it’s right on your doorstep. The 750-acre Rother Valley Country Park has four artificial lakes, and as well as a full-size cable ski and wake park they’ve brought more exciting ways for people to wipe out with the aqua park. Complete

with huge inflatable slides, a 27ft trampoline, climbing walls, runways and a blast bag, it’s the ultimate outdoor water experience. Pulling into the car park on a sunny Saturday morning, my partner and I could just see the top of one of the inflatable slides and couldn’t wait to have a go. It was a quick and easy process getting checked in. Once we read the safety card and received the wristbands, we struggled into our wetsuits and were ready to pick up the life jackets and listen to a safety briefing. This included inflatable safety, getting the lifeguard’s

attention and even jokes about crocodiles eating all the sharks, causing a few chuckles from the adults and some panic stricken faces from the children. Then, after a quick walk to the water’s edge, we were let loose to try our hand at the adrenaline-fuelled aqua park. After a few seconds deliberating how cold the water would be, I eventually bit the bullet and jumped in. I was thankful for the fulllength wetsuit to give me that extra bit of warmth as I made the short swim out to the inflatables. Once we pulled ourselves up onto the course and got

our balance – which took a few minutes – we started to tackle the giant obstacles. As the course is a simple rectangular layout, it’s easy to navigate your way around. We started at one of the climbing frames, deciding to race against one other by one clambering over and the other under, needless to say going over was considerably quicker. Then we were back onto the runways and heading towards the first of four slides. After a few attempts on the runways, I discovered

39

that instead of delicately walking across, it was easier to run across and saved me a few falls back into the lake. The slides were my favourite section of the course. After a trying incline on the awe-inspiring ladder, you’re rewarded with a thrilling free fall straight into the lake. After a quick swim, we pulled ourselves up onto the next section – which meant it was time to tackle the balancing beam and Jungle Joe. My partner made it look easy by getting across with ease, however, my balancing isn’t great so, needless to say, I didn’t even

make it halfway across the beam without falling off. The Jungle Joe is an incredible, towering inflatable which reminded me of the spider web structure you come across at parks. After a tiring but exciting climb up, it was time to plunge back into the water off the slighter smaller – but still exhilarating –slide. And for those daring enough, you can finish the experience of the Jungle Joe on the blast bag which launches you skyward. We then attempted the

monkey bars under the summit express, which also has a three-metre climbing wall attached to it along with yet another slide; the whole section is an adrenaline overload. It was time to calm down after this, so we climbed across to the 27ft trampoline. I’m a big fan of trampolines and the experience was only improved by it being over a body of water. The activities aren’t just

JUNE 2017 / ISSUE 42

limited to the rectangle course, as just off to the side there are some more inflatables to try including the Rock It and the Rock and Slide. Overall it was a fantastic 50 minutes and despite being exhausted by the end, it was worth feeling achy the next day. If you’re looking for something exciting to do this summer, then I would recommend heading down to the Aqua Park for the ultimate inflatable experience.

43 Need help getting your foot on the property ladder? Fluent in Money can tailor a mortgage to your needs. OLIVER Ashton isn’t your usual mortgage broker. The 22-year-old has brought a new lease of life to the mortgage world, and is one of the most approachable money-men we’ve ever met. Oliver is young, enthusiastic and passionate about helping people manage their money. Although relatively fresh out the blocks, he draws experience from his dad, Andy, who has been in the business for 25 years. Together the pair help a client base of more than 1,000 people from their office on Cemetery Road, at a time that is convenient for the customer. Oliver initially trained as an accountant and is AAT Accounting qualified, but made the move into mortgages and life insurance when he realised he much prefers being out and about, meeting new people and helping clients to manage their money. He is keen to help younger people realise the importance of understanding the options available to them, especially when it comes to mortgages and life insurance. We picked Oliver’s brain to find out more:

Why use a mortgage broker? Why limit yourself to one bank? Mortgage brokers can find you the best deal by comparing all of the options made available to them, without being restricted to certain products or lenders. A broker will do all the work for you, leavingyou stress-free. How much can I borrow? What types of mortgage are available? The banks use their own mortgage calculators and they all differ slightly, a broker will help you find a bank that will fit your criteria and allow you to borrow what you need. The most common mortgages are standard variable rate , tracker rate and fixed interest rate mortgages. How much deposit do I need for a mortgage? It’s still possible to get a 95 per cent mortgage, where you pay a low deposit of five per cent of the property’s value. However, the more deposit you have, the lower the interest rate will be. The government has also introduced various schemes to help out with the deposit including the Help to Buy scheme. How can I make an appointment to see you? I can be contacted by phone on 07403 255280 or you can email me on oliverashton2016@gmail.com and I will get back to you promptly – there’s no need to take time off work as I am flexible with appointments and can work around your diary.

GURU HERALDED as ‘Sheffield’s Chinatown’ and ‘Sheffield’s own version of New York’s Times Square’, the £65million New Era Square development has the city waiting with bated breath to see the finished first phase of the scheme, due to be open less than a year from now. The biggest source of anticipation is the whopping 21-storey tower, the lift-shaft of which now plays the leading role in many a Sheffieldskyline photo on social media. The first phase alone will boast the new home of the 40year-old KH Oriental Supermarket and 13 prime shop and restaurant units. Retailers can now bid for one of the much-sought-after units in the development, which have attracted interest from Chinese restaurateurs, cafés, a live seafood store and a national fish and chip chain. New Era Development, the multi-million-pound property development company that is responsible for the Square, has chosen local firm Campbell and Co. www.campbellco.co.uk to manage all commercial lettings for the scheme. The smaller units will house Oriental, city-style kiosks selling lunch to take away. There’ll be everything from steamed pork buns called ‘bao’, to bubble tea and noodles in the style of the hip, modern street food vendors of international cities like Beijing or Shanghai. If you’re lucky you might get your hands on one of the 12 exclusive private apartments atop the tower. The one, two and three-bed private apartments will sit above

several hundred luxury student studios, the first of which are already being let to students moving in this September. If that’s not enough to stir your curiosity, by 2019 the second phase will add more shops and restaurants, student accommodation, an underground car park, offices and conference suite for a China-UK Business Incubator (read more on page 23), all surrounding a pedestrianised public square for the world to enjoy.

Sarah Darling’s ornithological-inspired pieces are perfect for summer. Tell us about your cover.

How would you describe your style?

The cover is of a male great tit and the picture is called ‘Contemplation’. This is one of my smaller collage art pieces which consists of watercolour, pencil and paper. Although one of my simpler designs it has proved to be a successful seller in my greetings card range.

I would say that my style is quite traditional with a modern twist. My pictures are obviously quite faithful representations of birds but they are not the flat classic ornithological depictions of old. I use lots of different media in my work to build interest and can include personal items such as photos, poems and letters.

What’s your background?

What are you working on at the moment?

Art has always been a big part of my life and my family have always encouraged me to follow my dreams. My background academically is actually in textiles. I completed an Art Foundation Course at Chesterfield College specialising in Surface Design and then attended Manchester Metropolitan University focusing on Print. I think this is where my love for texture has come from in my artwork. I love the fact that I can create a piece of art which someone wants to touch rather than just look at.

At the moment I am focusing on creating a collection of pieces that are based on the birds and the people of Sheffield. Sheffield is the greenest city in the UK and has an abundant bird population with all species living and working side by side which in many ways mirrors the city’s inhabitants. Through my ongoing collection I’m attempting to portray this story of diversity and togetherness depicting the birds in similar social situations that the locals experience.

One for sorrow, Two for joy, Three for a girl, Four for a boy.

Who/what is your inspiration?

I don’t have any artists who I follow religiously as I find if you focus on someone else’s work you lose track of your own style and start to compare your work to theirs. Everyone has their own flair and artistic ability, I don’t like to be swayed by the work of others. However, there are plenty of artists I do like whose work is very different to my own. I love portrait artists such as Keith Breeden or Lucian Freud, I think if I could branch into another form of art it would be portraiture. As for collage artists I do really like Peter Clark he creates a whole host of different animals and objects using folded paper etc and his book ‘ Paper Work’ is lush, a great coffee table and inspo book!

happy medium for me, it has the buzz of the city and the friendliness of a village. The greenness of the city is wonderful it’s like having a part of the countryside with you always... when I go away on holiday I always feel homesick for the trees and the birds. What would be your dream project?

My dream project would be to able to have a whole year solely dedicated to producing my work and experimenting with new media. Day to day life is so busy that time is precious so to be able to have that time to develop my work would be a dream. What does the future hold?

Hopefully the future is rosy! As well as my artwork I have a full time job, I’d love to be able to rely solely on my art for a living but I’ve never been brave enough to make that giant leap! I sometimes think that if I had to produce my art in order to live some of the joy of creating it might be sucked away. I think I’d like a balance between the job I do now and my art, the good bits of both, guess I’m greedy like that!

What makes Sheffield stand out from other cities?

I grew up in a village and have lived in other cities and Sheffield is the perfect

How would you describe the art/design scene in Sheffield?

Sheffield is just an exciting hub of creativity with more and more amazing projects, festivals and retail outlets popping up in the city yearly. If you have a love for the arts then Sheffield is definitely the place to be. One of the best things is that people from all backgrounds and creative genres come together to work on things, it’s a real community city. Sarah is also available for commissions.
