What is Medisculpt therapy? G&M HEALTHCARE’S DR GRACE HULA EXPLAINS THE BENEFITS TO THEIR WEIGHT LOSS PROGRAMME. ediSculpt Therapy is a nonsurgical weight loss program used to improve weight loss, obesity and some chronic medical conditions like type 2 diabetes mellitus, high cholesterol, hypertension and sleep apnoea. Medisculpt Therapy comprises of three main components; the diet, which is based on high protein foods with low carbohydrate and low fat contents and two body contouring treatments, LPG Endermologie and Vanquish Me or Exilis Elite machines. The body contouring treatment LPG Endermologie is used for skin tightening in order to prevent the development of loose and sagging skin during and after the rapid weight loss. The second body contouring machine is a radio frequency machine for body fat reduction. G&M Healthcare has two machines – either the Exilis Elite or the Vanquish Machine – and the choice of which machine to use depends on the treatment package and area of the body requiring treatment. The radio frequency machines result in a significant fat reduction in targeted areas like the tummy, thighs or arms. These treatments are carried out weekly by fully trained therapists and last about 30-40 minutes each. In total you need about 75-90 minutes per week for your treatments. Weight loss with MediSculpt Therapy is safe, efficient and rapid. The weight loss progress is constantly monitored by a qualified GP and fully trained therapists who check weight loss progress, blood pressure, body fat content, metabolic rates and do blood tests on a regular basis. With regard to the results, G&M know from experience that a female patient will typically lose one stone a month and a male patient will typically lose one to one and a half stones.

Anne Kay lost over 4-and-ahalf stones after following the Medisculpt Therapy programme
MediSculpt Therapy consists of six phases, which deliver amazing, safe, efficient and sustainable weight loss. During phase one of MediSculpt Therapy the diet comprises of five meals and one snack a day. Protein foods are filling, hence patients don’t feel hungry. To supplement the diet some fruit and vegetables are also allowed on the diet. The vegetables can be boiled, steamed, roasted, grilled or stir-fried. Herbs and spices can be added to increase flavour. G&M Healthcare do metabolic tests to check your rates and also provide supplements to ensure you don’t lack in essential minerals like magnesium, potassium, sodium chloride, calcium and trace minerals. You need to fast for at least four hours before your metabolic test or initial blood test. Once the phase one target is achieved after losing about 70 per cent of your target weight, patients move onto phase two of the diet where normal foods, like weighed amounts of chicken, meat, fish and dairy like eggs, are introduced. Once 90 per cent of your target weight loss is achieved, patients are weaned to measured amounts of normal eating on phase three. Thereafter phases four to six are stabilisation phases to ensure that optimum weaning off from the diet is achieved without putting on back the weight you have lost on.
Once you have achieved your stabilisation, G&M Healthcare has a lifelong maintenance programme where they offer six weekly follow-ups for review by a therapist who measures your weight and body fat composition. Follow up is then three to six-monthly for one year or as required thereafter. Cost of the program depends on the package you choose. There are three price packages – basic, standard and deluxe. All packages consist of your consultation fee (£100) and blood test fee (£100) followed by the package fees. Supplement prices are £50/month but vary depending on the package you choose. The basic package is £125/week for only food. The standard package is £250/week for food and body contouring treatments with LPG Endermologie and Vanquish or Exilis Elite. The deluxe package is £300/week and includes food, body contouring treatments, supplements, four weekly reviews and blood tests. OUT & ABOUT
Yorkshire Wildlife Park
WE SPEAK TO CHERYL WILLIAMS, CHIEF EXECUTIVE AT YORKSHIRE WILDLIFE PARK, ABOUT THE RE-OPENING OF THE POPULAR ATTRACTION . How have things gone since you reopened?
Everything has gone very well – we have been well supported and our visitors are very forgiving that everything isn’t quite the same due to the restrictions. Parts of the park have opened up gradually as other restrictions were lifted, for example we are just starting now to open up some of the cafes and play areas. Advance booking has been very helpful – with everyone having to book online and in advance, we know exactly how many people we are expecting every day! What changes have you had to make to the park?
We had to put in a lot of thought into how we would open the park. Social distancing was important so we had to calculate how many people we could allow in comfortably. We are lucky that we have a lot of wide pathways, so with lots of signage we were able to create a good visitor journey that didn’t spoil the experience too much, but there are a couple of one-way pathways now such as the Tiger Walkway. There are enhanced cleaning protocols everywhere, the toilets are carefully managed and to start with we only had a takeaway food offer, but we are just starting to open up some of the seated areas now and reopen the
Safari Café. It is quite staff intensive as we have to have people out at pinch points around the park to help people navigate their way safely. Do you anticipate further changes in coming weeks/months?
We are hoping to open up the play areas soon and also the animal walkthrough areas, which will also increase the space that people have. We can’t do ranger talks at the moment as it encourages people to group together so hopefully they will be able to make a comeback in some form soon. We are opening the park earlier (at 9am) to spread the visitors over the day and in August we will probably introduce opening into the evening as well. When do you think the park will be back to ‘normal’ (if that’s possible)?
I think we have been so far from normal that no one would dare to second guess at the moment. Especially with the fears of local lockdowns, we just have to accept every day as it comes. We really hope that by the autumn, the experience we can offer will be a lot closer to the YWP that everyone recognises, but we have already been able to open up a lot more of the park and its facilities that we thought we were going to be able to a few weeks ago.
How do you see things progressing for YWP?
The park has exciting plans for the future and we are continuing to work on the expansion site. We are grateful that our amazing animal rangers and some of the other staff have been able to work throughout the crisis looking after the animals and maintaining the park. We make an important contribution to the local economy and with the support of our visitors, we will continue to grow and provide important employment for local people. What’s the biggest challenge facing you?
The biggest challenge is probably trying to second guess the future, let’s hope for continuing improvement in the situation and that the economy recovers. The current restrictions on visitor numbers means that we won’t be able to make up the loss of income that we would have had from March to June so the rest of the year will certainly be challenging for us. CREATE YOUR OWN CONCOCTIONS AT HOME WITH EASE THANKS TO EXPERT ADVICE FROM SOME OF THE REGION’S FINEST MIXOLOGISTS. BY MARTIN EDWARDS. ocktails. Say no more. The very sound of it spells out a certain style. Something to enjoy while watching the sun go down over the yachts in the bay en route to the casino at Monte Carlo, perhaps. The name’s Bond. Cocktail parties. Cocktail dress. All the greater surprise then, to learn that this icon of sophistication owes its existence to altogether more humble origins. At one time, drinking a cocktail could mean having the collar on that exquisite dinner jacket felt by the law. Welcome to the murky underworld of prohibition. If you think the lockdown was pretty tough, then imagine it lasting for 13 years. In 1920, the sale or transportation of all alcoholic drinks became illegal in the USA. This merely had the effect of driving the trade underground. Jazz age venues became louche speakeasies, crime (especially bootlegging) rose, and the ban apparently caused tens of thousands
C
of Americans to fall ill – there was an exemption for those who required alcohol for medical reasons. The sale of patent medicines also went through the roof. Moreover, the era also gave rise to the ‘mixed drink’. Fruit juices, sodas, and other mixers were added to cocktails to cover the taste of wood alcohol and bathtub gin conjured up on home stills. It was often, quite literally, lethal stuff. Sweet cocktails were easier to drink quickly, which was an important consideration when the establishment might be raided by the Feds at any moment. With wine and beer less readily available, liquor-based cocktails were here to stay. The golden age of cocktails began in the 1980s with vodka often substituting the original gin in drinks such as the martini. Traditional cocktails began to make a comeback in the 2000s and by the mid-2000s there were bars opening in all major cities, staffed by so-called mixologists.

the art. Firstly to Sheffield, and to the luxurious and hugely popular Kettle Black on Ecclesall Road, the city’s most vibrant thoroughfare. Here, general manager Jack Hartley presides over a list of 75 different cocktails. If you’re not sure which you want to try, there is even a taste guide on the list which steers you towards those which you are more likely to prefer. Jack displays his mastery of the mix by creating a special cocktail just for us. “I was aiming for a cocktail that was relevant to the times we live in, and also the season. So this one is bursting with refreshing summer fruit flavours”, he says. With a wry reference to this year’s government-imposed restrictions, this is a drink to signal that the good times are back. Introducing the Lockdown Lady (see recipe opposite). In the interests of journalistic credibility, your reporter was obliged to taste the resulting mix and pronounced it “a drink I can see everyone liking, A great blast of alcohol and fruit. An iron fist in a velvet glove”. *** ext stop Leeds and a firm favourite among devotees of cocktail chic, in the shape of Hedonist on Briggate. It’s here that one of the founding trio of friends, Dan Crowther, saw a silver lining in the Coronavirus cloud. Under the new name Hedonist@home, they can supply a range of drinks specifically designed to recreate the taste of the cocktail bar at home. Dan sees this as a trend that is set to stay. “The whole ‘celebrity chef ’ and popular food programs such as Great British Bake Off and Masterchef have led to a realisation within the general public that the dishes they get at restaurants and that they see on social media are attainable. “This has led to an increase in home cooking and the skill of the home chef increasing as the dinner party is quickly becoming a new norm once again, rather than going out.

Watermelon cordial 50ml Aperol 50ml Watermelon cordial (you can use Robinsons Watermelon & Strawberry cordial) 125ml Prosecco Method: Pour all ingredients over cubed ice in a wine glass. Give it a quick stir and then garnish with orange zest. Simple.
“This elevation in home cooking is soon to come to home drinking, with people becoming more educated on what it is to make good quality drinks and learning the tricks of the trade thanks to shows like Sunday Brunch,” he said. Dan’s choice of cocktail reflects this thinking as it’s simple to make and tastes great. Dan also provides us with a crash course in cocktail technique. “To make good drinks at home is really easy to achieve but first you will need to understand one thing, MEASURE YOUR INGREDIENTS, just as when you make a great food dishes you will follow a recipe with grams, millilitres and pounds. “This is exactly the thinking you need to follow when making drinks rather than just filling the glass. So the first thing I would do is get a measuring device that measures in increments of 5ml up to 50/100ml. A cocktail jigger can be easily bought online. “The next bit of advice would be to always use fresh citrus, don’t buy premade, get some lemons or limes and get juicing. This will instantly create bettertasting drinks. Finally follow recipes, there are a plethora of recipes online on various websites you can reference such as Diffords Guide, but also a large amount of drinks books available as well at various stores.” *** ack Clark of the Chophaus at Roundhay Park, Leeds, is the thinking man’s mixologist. something of a reputation at the popular steakhouse and cocktail bar in smart suburbia. We started by asking him what inspired him to create this cocktail. “I did a lot of sitting around in lockdown reminiscing about childhood summer holidays. So I decided the healthy lifestyle was for me. That meant going out to get exercise. There’s nothing like cycling down the canal on summer days. On the first day of British summer sunshine, I cycled along the canal to Woodlesford lock, where I saw a classic ice cream van and decided to indulge my long past penchant for getting a double 99 with everything on, the whole works. So that’s what inspired me to create this drink, flashback to a summer day with no problems in your childhood. Second question; What makes a good cocktail? “Five things: Presentation, flavour, aroma, balance and ‘The Story’,” came the immediate reply. Care to elaborate? He did. “Let’s take presentation. The glassware is often overlooked.Take it from a binary perspective. Self-titled glassware such as the martini or the old fashioned, specifically for that one designed classic. I see it as how you would dress yourself. The elegance of a cocktail starts with what you present it in. Closely follows is colour, showing moody emotions in a viscous oak-aged tint, or a fun bluelayered drink that takes you back to Ibiza. “Then there’s aroma.Where does it take you? A plethora of memories. Not only does it oxidise your palate to unlock the life of a thousand tastebuds, it can take you somewhere. Flavour is a journey, starting with the aroma. The cooling temperature as it first meets lips, followed by the texture as it coats your mouth.
Starting off with the light tones of delicacy, as it makes its way to the finish and it channels through the bolder flavours. It can quench your thirst or leave you in need of another swill to satisfy. “Balance next.Without balance the world would be on fire.We can’t go crazy throwing our favourite elements together without having a clash. Likewise, with cocktails it’s about finding the harmonies within the ingredients you combine to complement the palate. With that it could be literally just a matter of being tweaked by the smallest of measurements to bring peace to the final product. “The Story? The final picture, as you could say the imagery that I could paint in your head that brings a cocktail full circle. Without a story to follow, a drink doesn’t have substance, or at least struggles. It’s almost like getting to know a person you’ve never met, stepping into the shoes of the creator or relating to it in your own way.” Thanks Jack. Maybe I’ll just drink the cocktail.

AWARD WINNING RESTAURANT Winners of the 2019 Eastside Restaurant Awards
“I’m Chintana, most people know me as Ton. I grew up in a village not far from the city of Ratchuburi in Thailand. I started cooking at a young age and used to cook for all my family. Mai Dang was my first restaurant I opened when I was 18 years old. Six Years later, I met my husband and we decided to start a family in Doncaster. Then this gave me the opportunity to open the first Thai Restaurant in Doncaster, The Bangkok Thai Restaurant. Ten years of running a successful business, we wanted to expand and we decided to open the Bangkok Royal Elephant. Now we’re starting a new chapter by opening the only Thai Restaurant in Doncaster, Thai At The Sal.”

The principles of preparing for a whole school reopening THE NEW PRINCIPAL OF QUEEN ETHELBURGA’S TALKS ABOUT PLANNING FOR A SEPTEMBER REOPENING, FOR ALL AGE GROUPS, AND HIS VISION FOR THE COLLEGIATE. tarting the next academic year as the new Principal of Queen Ethelburga’s Collegiate will be a very different experience to that which I had envisioned when I was first appointed. Having been in education over 30 years, 17 of these as the head of large UK and international independent schools, I’ve seen some change in practice. The challenges facing schools across the UK in preparing for full reopening in September – as we’ve heard said many times already –are unprecedented. With key worker and Forces boarding students staying on campus throughout lockdown, and a successful welcoming of our Reception,Year 1 and Year 6 cohort in early June, we now have plenty of experience of operating in a controlled lockdown. QE has complied with, and gone beyond, the measures required by government and we have committed ourselves to the BSA School Safe Charter. We are using this experience to ensure we have adaptable plans in place, as we welcome students back at the start of term. We have issued guidance to our students and parents on the measures we are taking to keep the campus as safe as possible, whilst maintaining the welcoming and happy atmosphere that they know and love. Our location is ideal. Queen Ethelburga’s benefits from a highly secure, rural campus, set in the stunning North Yorkshire countryside. It is looking increasingly likely that

school will be reopening in September without the social distance restrictions we have now, however, we are still planning to bring our boarders back two weeks earlier in August, so that we can offer quarantine if necessary, but also to offer a curriculum preparation programme for the year ahead. Our priorities for the next year build on QE’s success story to date. We know
Collegiate Principal Jeff Smith
that the key to academic excellence is the consistency in quality of teaching, therefore this will always be the focus for the Collegiate. Continuous improvement is also key. We will be reflecting on everything we do and will always seek feedback from our students, parents and teachers so that we understand our community needs and find ways to meet them. We will continue to find ways to broaden and improve the curriculum and enrichment opportunities we offer, and extend students learning beyond the restraints of the classroom. We will use our recent online teaching and learning experience to develop our IT strategy, taking the opportunity to develop elearning in an impactful way. Through our academic, pastoral and enrichment programmes, we will continue to develop the personal qualities of our students, such as leadership, resilience, critical thinking and responsibility. As always, we will prioritise the safeguarding, health and wellbeing of all our students and staff. To find out more about QE, visit www.qe.org.

A School Where Excellent Results Reward Hard Work
Mount St Mary’s College and Barlborough Hall School prides itself on providing girls and boys aged 3-18, with an outstanding education. The school’s thriving Sixth Form is a place of high standards and high performance. A place where hard work is rewarded with excellent results. Dr Sarah Dewar-Watson, Head of Sixth Form says: “We have an excellent track record of our students getting their first choice of university place, and many of our students go on to study at Russell Group universities.” In September, as we hopefully return to a more conventional school year, students in Year 12 and 13 will benefit from the Mount’s new Sixth Form Study Centre. This state-ofthe-art facility will provide a modern and sophisticated setting for our young people as they embark on this critical phase of their studies. Dr Dewar-Watson adds: “We offer the best teaching and support for our students, including the chance to study for an EPQ. “Our Sixth Form provides pupils with an experience which is rich in academic opportunity and personal growth. Throughout their academic studies they will be exceptionally well-supported in the
classroom and in their independent learning as they explore decisions about their longer term future.” Dr Dewar-Watson says: “We prepare students for entry on to some of the most academically competitive courses in the UK. We also work with expert careers advisors to prepare students for a wide variety of career paths, including HM Armed Forces, business and enterprise, sport and the performing arts.” As a Jesuit school, the care of each individual student is paramount. Both academic and personal excellence are at the heart of our school. We are an inclusive school and welcome families of all faiths and beliefs. Our mission is to know our pupils, understand them, challenge and support them so that they grow to be fulfilled, purposeful and happy members of society who are men and women for others. The Mount, and its preparatory school Barlborough Hall, also provide scholarship and bursary opportunities to children who excel academically, in music or at sport. Scholarships and bursaries are awarded discretionally and can be applied for at any point during the academic year. More details are available from our Admissions team who can be contacted via email: admissions@msmcollege.com
With outstanding facilities across both our school sites our pupils begin to flourish from their first day. Children are welcome to join us at any point in their school journey, from 3 to 18 years. Mount St Mary’s College and Barlborough Hall School are just five minutes’ drive from the M1, with Sheffield and Chesterfield a short drive away. Support the bird garden AS A CHARITY, HAREWOOD HOUSE IS RELIANT ON ITS VISITORS AND MEMBERS – AND IS NOW ASKING FOR THEIR HELP. s one of the ‘Treasure Houses’ of England, Harewood House is a much-loved Yorkshire destination. Built in the 18th century, it has art collections to rival the finest in the country as well as a rare bird garden, farm experience and over 100 acres of exquisite gardens to explore. Sadly, Harewood was forced to close its doors due to the Covid-19 pandemic and, at the time of writing, was still waiting to hear when it can welcome visitors once again. But that doesn’t mean everything at Harewood has stopped during lockdown. Whilst the gates are closed, ongoing essential work has been taking place behind the scenes to feed and care for over 300 birds and conservation work in the rare bird garden. Harewood Bird Garden is a home to over 40 species of birds from around the world.Visit, and you will see the critically endangered Bali starling, charismatic and colourful parrots, as well as a popular colony of Humboldt penguins. You can learn about the birds that they care for, explore their characteristics, their conservation status and what makes them unique, see one of the world’s largest owl species or listen to a flock of Zebra finches. As a charity, Harewood is reliant on a steady stream of income from visitors and members, and part of that income ensures the health and well being the birds, many of which are endangered in the wild. Across a 12-week period, £35,000 is needed to support the bird garden and maintain the important work of conservation and engagement with 17 different international breeding programmes. To raise these vital funds, Harewood has launched an appeal via the Just Giving website – www.justgiving.com/campaign/ harewoodbirds.

“Whilst everyday life has changed for most people at the moment, it remains the same for the birds, and work in the bird garden must continue,” said bird garden manager, Nicholas Dowling. “We’ve adapted to a new way of working safely during this time, but now more than ever Harewood Bird Garden needs support from the public. “The Harewood Bird Garden turns 50 this year and we had lots of exciting plans for visitors, including a new bird hide and a walk-though aviary. These have all been put on hold as we focus on essential work and also look at how we can tell stories of these fascinating birds to people online. We know this is a challenging time for everyone, and that there are many causes people will want to support, and so any help is greatly appreciated.” At present, Harewood are almost a quarter of the way to reaching their £35,000 target. Here’s how your donations can help: • £10 buys… Feed for one of ten Humboldt penguins per week • £20 would get… A day’s worth of fresh fruit and vegetables for their herbivore birds • £50 donated would… Cover Harewood’s live food bill for a week, especially for birds and chicks • £77 could cover… A bird keeper for one day, including their protective equipment.
• The bird garden is an official zoo – It has been licensed since the 1980s and a member of BIAZA, the professional body representing the best zoos and quariums in Britain and Ireland. • They are a bird rehab centre – Since the red kites were reintroduced just over 20 years ago in the region, the bird garden acts as an important rehabilitation facility. • Customs and excise send birds to Harewood – the bird garden is a holding venue for UK Customs receiving confiscated or seized animals • Harewood actively supports vital breeding programmes – Harewood’s birds are part of 17 different managed international breeding programmes, of which their two condors are a part. The are also one of the only zoos in the country to house and breed the Vietnam pheasant.

ith a degree in Environmental Management and Economics, Ben Lascelles is the son of the current Earl of Harewood and manages the Harewood Estate, whilst playing an active role in contributing to the Charity’s Bird Garden management.
W
What’s your background and connection to Harewood Bird Garden?
I manage the Harewood Estate, the land surrounding the charitable Trust, and am Chair of the Harewood Bird Garden Advisory Group. I’ve always loved the outdoors and birding is a great excuse to get outside and observe the world around us. As kids we’d spend a lot of time outside, climbing, swimming, having picnics and exploring. I think my first proper bird experience was visiting the famous RSPB reserve of Minsmere in Suffolk, close to where my grandmother lived for some years. I had a year off before studying Environmental Management and Economics at York University, heading to Nepal and working as a guide in a safari lodge. This is where I really got into wildlife photography. Where have your bird studies taken you?
The nature of my studies has enabled me to travel all over the world and work on some incredibly varied and far reaching projects. This has included time on a remote mountain range in Southern Tanzania, which had a lot of unusual and rare species of birds, a year working in Mauritius, contributing to a project to study the Pink Pigeon, a species we kept for many years in the Harewood bird garden, several years in the most famous rare bird migration spot in the UK, the
Scilly Isles and then a project with the Smithsonian Institute in Panama, Central America. I’ve also studied topics closer to home such as projects on Drax Power Station, Dalby Forest and Pocklington Canal, but these international visits have expanded my knowledge about the importance of conservation, what interventions work in different locations and given me a passion to share this knowledge and these incredible bird species where I can. What do you know of your family’s love for birds?
My grandparents had a strong interest in and love of birds when they established the Harewood Bird Garden in 1970. I was also aware that my father had an interest via film work he undertook on various research trips in the seventies. However, the family connection reaches much further back. Harewood was home to an 18th Century menagerie and Charles Canning received an award for the introduction of Himalayan pheasants into England. Later my grandfather was President of the World Pheasant Association for many years. Gerald Lascelles, son of the fourth Earl, was a competent falconer from an early age. He wrote several pioneering books on falconry and land management and was a land manager in the New Forest for many years. When moving back to Yorkshire some years ago, I enjoyed learning about Princess Mary’s interest in birds and of her ornamental owl collection. I thought I’d built up quite a good selection of owl figurines over the years, put to shame by her Faberge Owl! What’s significant about Harewood’s bird collection and role?
Fifty years is a long time for a small collection such as ours to keep running. We’ve always had excellent care of the birds in our collection and over the years some notable successes in breeding in captivity. This is a critical step before reintroduction schemes can take place. In recent years we’ve scaled the collection back somewhat to allow us to focus our efforts on key areas where there is a connection to Harewood, including South America, the Himalayas, parrots and our native wildlife. The Harewood Bird Garden plays an important role in raising awareness for the plight of some of these endangered species, through the appreciation gained through seeing them and learning about them from the keepers and from a visit to Harewood. Why is an understanding of birds and bird conservation important/enriching?
In our globalised world, it’s more important than ever that we’re aware of the impacts our choices can have on the environment and the species within it. Consumer choice drives so much of our politics and economics that making informed decisions about what we buy is a key part of sustainability and conservation. Until recent years, we haven’t always been aware of the impacts we have or the choices we can make. Birds are great indicators of what’s going on in the world around us and how their numbers fluctuate can inform us around how sustainable different practices are. And in this fast-paced world, taking time out to just sit and observe is a great release for stress and anxiety. Mindfulness and wellbeing are easily associated with watching birds. New principal The Board of Queen Ethelburga’s Collegiate are delighted to announce that Mr Jeff Smith will succeed Mr Steven Jandrell as Principal of the Collegiate, with effect from August 2020. Amy Martin, Chair of the Board, said of the appointment: “Throughout the recruitment process, it was incredibly important to us to ensure that the huge amount of experience, skills and knowledge we already have in our strategic team was complemented by any new appointment. I believe we have achieved this in appointing Jeff, to lead the team with vision and ambition, in creating the next exciting chapter of the QE story. “Jeff comes with an exceptional track record in successfully leading schools, improving and sustaining high performance. With a strong focus on teaching excellence, pastoral support and the continuing professional development of staff, we are confident that he will truly embody all our QE Community Values.” On his appointment, Jeff said: “It is a great honour to take over from Steven Jandrell who has led the Collegiate as a dedicated and visionary Principal for the past fourteen years, having spent 25 years of his teaching career at QE. “Starting the next academic year as the new Principal of QE will certainly be a very different experience to that which I had envisioned when I was first appointed. Local businesswoman, Nicola Codd from Doncaster is celebrating her sixth successful year in business in Doncaster as the owner of baby and toddler swimming company, Puddle Ducks Doncaster & South Humberside. The Doncaster & Humberside franchise launched its first classes in April 2014 and it now has 12 talented swimming teachers from the local area on its books, bringing its fun and effective swimming and life-saving classes to over 600 parents and their little ones across the area. “Although fun is at the heart of our classes, they’re about much more than this. Because the classes revolve around bonding and play, the children don’t even realise they’re learning to swim and are acquiring a skill that could save their lives. Life-saving is a structured and integral part of Puddle Ducks’ toddler classes, with a focus on saving other people’s lives as well as personal water safety. Classes, which take place at pools in Doncaster, Rotherham, Selby, North Lincs and NE Lincs last 30 minutes and carefully balance activities including group and individual work, swimming, submersion, floating, songs and games. Put a roof on it When is a conservatory not a conservatory? When it becomes a genuine extra room in your home. The one thing people did learn from the COVID-19 lockdown was that there was a real need to maximise on every inch of living space. Conservatories proved to be a problem area – too hot to sit in on the finest days and too cold to be much practical use at other times. But the solution to the problem can be as simple as installing a fully tiled roof, with a properly installed and insulated ceiling. Ian Chester, managing director of Yorkshire Windows, says that conservatory roofs have been one of the biggest home improvement trends for 2020, with their popularity on the increase as homeowners look to improve their properties as the lockdown eases. Happy customer Word of mouth recommendations are vital to any business, none more so than in the building trade. A happy customer was effusive in their praise for recent work carried out by Flint Construction: “Rich, Dave and their whole team did a fantastic job of renovating and transforming our house. They built a rear extension, front extension and outdoor space as well as carrying out lots of internal modifications for a very fair price. “The whole process was easy; there was good communication and the hitches and changes (which are inevitable in any building work) were all sorted out quickly.” To find out more about what Flint Construction can do for you, call 0114 345 0001 or visit www.flint-construction.com
