Doncaster Little Theatre will once again be hosting their annual pantomime, which this year will be Cinderella and run from 7-31 December.
Tell me about your role in the pantomime this year.
What has kept you coming back to the Rock ‘N’ Roll panto?
You’ve been in all 12 Rock ‘n’ Roll pantomimes, how does it feel to have participated since the beginning?
What do you love most about panto?
The festive favourite will be directed by Barbara Upton and is the familiar story of story of the poor Baron and his daughter who are bullied by his new wife Rubella and her ghastly, cruel daughters –Gertrude and Grizelda.
“There is the silly behaviour and audience interaction that you would expect,” said Barbara. “And expect a great deal of shouting, cheering and booing!”
of the panto is the interaction between Buttons, Cinderella and the other characters. She says there are some lovely lines in these exchanges that always make the audience laugh.
Pantomime can be such a generational thing and the performances at Doncaster Little Theatre are no exception.
“It is wonderful to see the auditorium full of people at this time of year,” added Barbara.
“There are many families that we host year after year and we always try to accommodate our usual cub and scout groups.”
Barbara has been retired for some years but also directs the Youth Theatre and runs their workshops and acts as company secretary. Away from the theatre she is on regular Grandma duties so just as busy as when she was working.
“I use a diary to keep me on the straight and narrow so I usually stay on top of things,” she laughed.

Yorkshire Wildlife Park’s Winter Illuminations take you Around the World in 80 Days. Rosie Brennan looks at what else in store for Christmas and why the park has year-round appeal.
Looking for something to do besides munching on M&S nibbles in the front room this Christmas? Yorkshire Wildlife Park (YWP)’s upcoming festive events provide a perfect trip out that is fun for the whole family. You can be enchanted by the park’s Winter Illuminations, enjoy a spot of breakfast with the jolly man himself, host your festive parties and attend the Christmas fair to eat, drink and be merry.
Since opening its doors 15 years ago, YWP has become Britain’s number one walkthrough wildlife adventure. The Doncaster hotspot is home to over 500 animals from across the globe. Undergoing continuous development, the park has transformed from just a wildlife exhibit to also being an incredible resort, complete with the new Hex Hotel and Yorkshire Hive, a free-admission shopping, dining and entertainment destination.
Open from 15 November until 3 January 2025, YWP’s Winter Illuminations are an annual Christmas hallmark for visitors. The exhibit has been described as a magical experience by visitors, and this year’s new display ‘Around The World in 80 Days’, will pose no exception. Expect to see illuminated global landmarks like the pyramids of Giza and Big Ben, as well as Wild West themes and a stunning hot air balloon. You might also be able to look out for some nocturnal animals on your visit, particularly the hyena, who are often on show.
“With the illuminations and the Christmas fair as well, this whole period is a busy for us as August in a different way,” said YWP Director Cheryl Williams, who founded the park alongside John Minion in 2008. “People start putting these events

“We saw the opportunity and thought it could work well for us, it was a complete gamble,” he said. “Tickets became like hot cakes, it was bonkers. There was this pentup demand of people wanting to do stuff, it really put the illuminations on the map as a big event.”
He also added that “zoos are typically busy during the summer and dead during
the winter, but to provide animals with the best welfare, you need revenue coming in year-round.”
Investing around £250,000 into new lanterns and displays each year, it is no illuminations in the area on an annual basis. Just under 140,000 people attended last year’s space-themed illuminations within seven weeks, with similar popularity expected this year and beyond.
The illuminations are not the only festive event occurring at the park this year. Celebrate the most wonderful time of the year over the weekends of 12-15 and 19-22 December at YWP’s Christmas fair. Over
60 independent stalls, seasonal snacks, hot drinks, fairground rides and festive entertainment can all be enjoyed at this Christmas extravaganza. Wander through the indoor makers marquee, stocked to the brim with unique, artisan stalls as you hunt down the perfect gift, or enjoy a festive

“It was a fairly crazy thing to do, but we managed to achieve it, it was the largest ever rescue of lions at that point in history,” explained John.

“From day one, we said you will not see a cage on site. That’s not what we’re about. We want people to view the animals the other way around, the animals are kept in natural groupings with spacious reserves. Welfare is really key,” said John.
One of their biggest and most rewarding challenges has been their journey to becoming European leaders in polar bear welfare. With three large reserves spanning ten acres and constant care, YWP is home to the largest collection of polar bears in England.
“Fundamentally, what we have now are happy polar bears. You never see our polar bears pacing or stereotyping or behaving in a stressed way. There’s key things behind that- space and having choice are both really, really important,” said John.
Constantly developing their ideas and expanding the YWP empire, John and Cheryl are non-stop in their hunt for greatness. Skiing and knee injuries
How to protect your knee on the slopes, by Mr Sanjeev Anand, Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, specialising in knees and sports injuries.
kiing is a popular winter activity that many people look forward to, but it also comes with some risks for your knees. In winter, I see more patients in my clinic who have injured their knees while skiing. Some of the common injuries are ligament tears, especially inner ligament (MCL) and anterior cruciate ligament (ACL); meniscus injuries; fractures, and dislocations. These injuries can be painful and require treatment and rehabilitation. Therefore, it is important to take some precautions before you hit the slopes.
What can I do to prevent injuring my knee?
• Train and strengthen your muscles and joints before your ski trip. Do exercises that improve your core stability, balance, cycling, squats, lunges, and cross-training are good options.
• Learn the correct skiing technique and posture from a professional instructor. Avoid leaning back, twisting your knees, or locking your legs. Keep your knees slightly bent and aligned with your feet and hips.
• Learn how to fall safely when skiing. Do not try to break your fall with your arms or legs. Instead, keep your limbs close to your body and roll with the impact.
• Listen to your body and ski within your limits. Do not ski
for your skill level or when you are tired or in pain.
• Be aware of the snow conditions and anticipate obstacles. You can twist your knee if your ski gets stuck in soft snow. Similarly, if a particular spot is icy it can make one ski slide much faster than another during a turn, which can put your knee out of place.
• Check your equipment and make sure it

• Avoid alcohol and skiing while fatigued, as this can impair your coordination and muscle reaction time.
What should I do if I injure my knee while skiing?
If you injure your knee, stop skiing immediately and seek help for safe evacuation from the slopes, especially if you are not able to put weight on the leg. See a doctor as soon as possible to diagnose the extent of the injury.
Most common injuries can be dealt in a
planned manner on your return, but it is important to protect your knee to prevent any further injuries. Use a knee brace and crutches to limit the load on your knee. Apply ice to the knee for 15 to 20 minutes every hour to reduce swelling and pain. Request your doctor for medication to reduce your risk
Operating on a stiff swollen knee can lead to more complications and poor outcomes. Not everyone who injures ACL needs surgery but if required, it can be safely done weeks, or even months after the initial injury. Similarly, MCL injuries are best managed by appropriate rehabilitation. A knee injury can affect many aspects of your life, such as your mobility, your activity level, and your quality of life. It is important to see a knee surgeon who can evaluate the extent of your injury and design a treatment plan that suits your needs and goals.

Don’t overlook dessert this Christmas. We turned to three local restaurants for inspiration.
essert is a dish often overlooked when it comes to Christmas dinner, with the roast bird (obviously) and all the trimmings taking centre stage.
DA traditional pudding is often the go-to choice – usually smothered in brandy butter or cream – but can be incredibly heavy
So what of the alternatives?
We have spoken to a number of our local restaurants – some winners in our recent Restaurant Awards (see page 76 for a full list of winners) – and asked for some inspiration when it comes to serving something up to follow the main event.
Karl Mainey is the head chef and proprietor at The Crown Inn Roecliffe and has prepared a Winter Spiced Apple Strudel.
“Our Apple Strudel recipe is just Christmas on a plate…” Karl said. “A real winter warmer that the whole family will love. Golden and crisp with lovely fruits.”
Karl recommends preparing the pudding
in advance and said to bake it just before you have starters for a crisp, warm pudding.
“This is a little slice of Christmas on a plate,” Karl added. “It has lovely winter fruits. You could even add a dash of brandy to the custard to make it even more luxurious.”
To complete the dessert, Karl recommends something orangey like Andrew Quady ‘Essensia’ Orange Muscat, which is sweet, fruity and rich.
Who better to ask for a dessert recipe that a pastry chef? Step forward Adele Stamp,
tiramisu, which gives a festive twist to a classic dessert.
“We chose it because it’s indulgent, but so simple to make – perfect for Christmas when everyone’s short on time,” she said.
Pair it with a dessert wine like a Vin Santo indulgent treat!”

Crown at Roecliffe: Winter Spiced Apple Strudel
Ingredients
1 tsp ground cinnamon
Pinch Nutmeg
1 unwaxed lemon
1 Orange (zest only)
100g Golden caster sugar
2 tbsp Honey
75g raisins
75g dried Cranberries
100g butter
40g white breadcrumbs
1 tbsp icing sugar
Method
1. Preheat the oven to 190C/170C Fan/Gas 5. Line a baking tray with baking parchment.
2. Mix the apples with the cinnamon, Nutmeg, lemon, Orange zest, sugar, honey, Cranberries and raisins. In a small frying pan, melt 20g butter and fry the breadcrumbs until goldenbrown, then add to the apple mixture.
3. Melt the remaining butter in a pan. On a clean, dry tea-towel lay a sheet melted butter. Lay another sheet on top and repeat until you have used all
of the pastry along one side about 2-3cm from the edge and using the tea-towel to help you, roll the pastry ends in and roll seam-side down onto remaining melted butter. golden-brown. Leave to cool slightly and dust with icing sugar. Slice and serve with cream, ice cream or custard.
6. Just buy your custard and add a shot of brandy for luxury.
7. Enjoy!
Browns at the Buttercross: Baileys Tiramisu
Ingredients
To soak the biscuits:
200ml strong coffee, cooled 200g-400g Savoiardi biscuits, depending on how big your dish is
600g mascarpone cheese
150g icing sugar
200ml double cream
1 tsp good quality vanilla extract
To garnish:
150g milk or dark chocolate, grated or shaved
Method
1. Combine the coffee and baileys into a wide dish, set aside.
2. In a bowl, whisk the mascarpone to soften until lump free. Then add the double cream, sugar and vanilla and whisk until thickened. Once at the desired consistency, set aside.
3. Gently soak the savoiardi biscuits by rolling them in the coffee mixture, allowing them to absorb the liquid, then place into your chosen tray or dish.
4. Once you have a layer of biscuits, top with half of the mascarpone cream and spread evenly across the biscuits.
5. Grate or sprinkle the chocolate shavings over the mascarpone layer, then repeat the last step so you have two layers of savoiardi biscuits and mascarpone cream.
6. Finish with the remaining chocolate shavings sprinkled on top.
7. Place into the fridge for at least two hours, preferably overnight.
8. Serve straight from the dish, or you can layer these up in individual pots or glasses if you prefer.
DN1 Delicatessen & Dining:
Fig tart, fig leaf sorbet and honeycomb custard
Ingredients
125g sugar
125g water
125g high-quality balsamic vinegar
125g high-quality balsamic vinegar
280g sugar
480g water
Juice of 2 lemons
For the honeycomb custard
8 egg yolks
100g sugar
250ml milk
250ml double cream
Half of the honeycomb from above, crumbled
Method
then reduce by half.
2. Once reduced, add the balsamic vinegar and continue to reduce by half again.
3. When the mixture has thickened, blend until smooth and strain to remove any seeds or pulp. Set aside to cool.

5. Remove from heat, strain if necessary, and allow to cool. Serve with a piece of

Method
1. Slice panettone roughly one-inch thick and leave to dry for a few hours, meanwhile soak the raisins in the brandy.
2. Infuse the cream with the vanilla pod until it reaches a rolling boil then take off heat and leave for ten minutes.
3. Combine egg yolks and sugar.
4. Mix cream with egg yolk mixture.
5. Lightly butter panettone slices with pastry brush.
6. Layer the dried panettone into a greased loaf tin sprinkling the raisins on each layer and a ladle of the egg/cream - leave to absorb for 30 mins then sprinkle some brown sugar on top.
7. Cook at 170ºC for around 40-45 minutes - be careful not to cook on too high a heat as the cream mix could curdle.
For the custard
1. Infuse the cream with the vanilla pod until it reaches a rolling boil then take off heat and leave for ten minutes.
2. Combine egg yolks and sugar.

To serve
1. Wait until panettone has cooled then slice roughly one-inch thick.
2. Pop the slice back into the oven for roughly 5-10 minutes at 180ºC.
3. Serve with custard and a scoop of vanilla ice cream on top.

Launching soon in Harrogate, Pudding Lab’s afternoon teas are just one of many ways to treat your loved ones this Christmas.
A Afternoon DELIGHT
fternoon tea is one of those quintessentially British pastimes that screams indulgence and what better time to do just this than at Christmas? It’s the perfect time to treat yourself or your examples in the centre of Harrogate, none more so than at the recently opened Pudding Lab on Cold Bath Road.
Pudding Lab afternoon teas (£35pp) offer that perfect balance of sweet and savoury and of course include the exquisite patisserie that they are so well known for.
Pudding Lab was created by close friends and chefs Ashley Close and Kian Lian and opened in Boston Spa in 2021. After appearing on this year’s Bake Off: The Professionals on Channel 4, they opened their second site in September.
Afternoon teas are already a huge hit in Boston Spa and sure to be just as popular in Harrogate. On the savoury side, there’s hot (croque monsieur) and cold (chicken and pesto) sandwiches along with a spiced butternut and goats’ cheese pithivier (hot) and a Paris-brest (cold), a choux pastry with smoked salmon, herb cream cheese and pea shoot salad.
Sweet-wise, there’s a miniature carrot cake tart, a petit gateau, which at the moment is blackberry and pistachio, a

Petit gateaux are hugely popular at Pudding Lab and regularly change but there’s been one consistent that has never left the menu since opening and has become something of a ‘cult classic’.
“From day one we’ve always had a chocolate éclair – we think it’s perfection in a choux bun,” explained Ashley. “It’s got a chocolate set custard in the centre, chocolate craquelin, and then a chocolate whipped ganache, which gets piped along the top with some cocoa nibs.”
The éclair is not their only creation that has captured the imagination; a recent visitor described their croque monsieur
as the ‘best outside Paris’ and the toffee apple gateau has become a social media sensation.
“We’re both really passionate about patisserie and love what we do,” added Ashley. “But we just like to offer a welcoming space for people to come and relax and enjoy the experience.”

A family AFFAIR
Zucco is proudly independent with plenty of personal touches, writes Richard Abbey.
ood is often made for sharing and is something that forms a big part of Italian culture. It’s certainly the ethos at Zucco in Meanwood, Leeds, whose small plate menu is perfect for those who like to gather round the table and try a little bit (or a lot) of everything.
The independent family-run restaurant was founded by brothers Michael and Rosario Leggiero in 2013. The pair have 50 years combined experience in the industry, Michael specialising in the kitchen and Rosario front of house, but have since started to pass the baton to the next generation.
Michael’s sons – Matteo and Joseph – both grew up in the area and are now slowly taking over the reins with elder brother Matteo running the restaurant whilst Joe is currently working in the kitchen and will eventually take over from Michael. Michael’s wife, Clare, also works there alongside her day job and helps run the restaurant a couple of nights a week.
The seasonal menu changes regularly, although there are staple dishes that don’t change. It’s designed for diners to have between four and seven dishes between two with a range of pizzettes, fresh seafood, meat and pasta dishes. A majestic dining EXPERIENCE
More than a retirement village, Audley Scarcroft Park has a stunning restaurant too, writes Graham Clark.
The last time I was in the Scarcroft area, north of Leeds, was to witness a feast of musical acts at the Leeds Festival. My visit to the area this time was to experience a feast of a different kind - dining at the recently opened Thackaray’s restaurant and bistro at Audley Scarcroft Park.
Set within 110 acres of countryside, the park comprises of 172 luxury retirement properties in and around the Grade II listed Scarcroft Lodge where the design complements the area both in style and grandeur. As we turned off the A61 from Leeds to Wetherby the wide and leafy drive to the restaurant set the scene for a memorable evening.
Housed within Lodge the restaurant also has a roomy bistro where we dined alongside other guests. As we sat down in one of the bay-side window seats our friendly server enlightened myself and my partner with the news that the view across
the rolling countryside was most idyllic, though as it was pitch black due to it being a chilly autumn evening we concluded that we would have to use our imagination!
Kevin Connor, head chef at Scarcroft Park comes with impressive credentials having gained experience working in some of the best hotels up and down the country including a stint as sous chef at Buckingham Palace.
Indeed, the atmosphere that prevailed
throughout our visit did feel like a majestic one in style and content.
The current autumn menu is kept to a carefully chosen one that whilst not copious, the emphasis is on quality. For anyone watching their weight the addition of the calorie content of each dish was an impressive touch.
My starter of Caesar Salad (£11.50) served with gem lettuce, anchovies, bacon, soft boiled egg, croutons and Parmesan
cheese was fresh with just the right amount of cheese so as not to overpower the taste of the other ingredients.
My partner decided upon the house salad served with French dressing (£4.50) without any onions added, although she did discover a few small pieces. Our server was very apologetic which was in keeping with without being overwhelming.
My decision to choose the beer battered haddock and chips served with peas and tartare sauce (£17.25) was a wise one.
some proper homemade chips. My partner described her pan roasted hake (£22) served with savoy cabbage, potato cake, charred leeks and white wine sauce as one of the best she has tasted; the delicate texture of the hake was complemented with a crisp coating.
You might decide to share a dessert although after the tempting array on offer it seemed rude not to try one each. My chocolate bread and butter pudding served with custard (£8) weighed in at, take a deep worth it.
My partner went for the lighter option of an apple tarte tatin served with vanilla
ice cream (£8.75) with a low calorie count of 351 calories. Looking as good as any you would see at a Parisian patisserie and apparently tasing just as good, the buttery and slightly salted pastry along with the caramelised apples made this simple but scrumptious French delicacy come alive with an authentic aroma and taste.
In-keeping with the season, a Festive Menu is also available at Thackaray’s Monday to Saturday with two courses costing £32, three courses £36 besides the Festive Afternoon Tea at £25.50 per person. Good food, beautifully cooked and presented with service to match in convivial surroundings. We intend to return again, next time in daylight hours. The countryside views might have been missing this time around though whenever you
decide to dine at Thackaray’s the standards here appear to always be in plain view.
