e’ll meet again” was the refrain that captured the mood back in March, when the seriousness of the Covid-19 crisis was literally brought home to us. We’re pleased to say the wish expressed by the song has been granted. We’re back! And we look forward to bringing you the latest in lifestyle. By chance, this issue will arrive through your door on 19 June – 34 years to the day that Westside appeared on the local scene. So happy birthday to us! And happy reading to you!

GARDENING

Make your neighbours green with envy RICHARD ABBEY LOOKS AT TEN THINGS TO TACKLE IN THE GARDEN THIS SUMMER. f, like me, you’d run out of excuses for putting off that long list of garden-related jobs, chances are the last couple of months has seen you tick off more than a few of those ‘must-do’ chores. For the keen (and not so keen) gardeners amongst us, it’s been the ideal time in which to grow, develop and improve our outdoor spaces.Whatever your level of green-fingeredness, the Royal Horticultural Society (www.rhs.org.uk) is an invaluable resource and has some great advice to give your garden the wow factor. Here are ten top tips to improve your outdoor space (if you haven’t done them already).

I

1. Hoe borders regularly Summer has arrived, and the extra light and warmth encourages the garden to put

on an exuberant burst of growth. But this also means weeds will sprout up from seemingly nowhere. They can be controlled without resorting to weedkillers by hoeing regularly in dry conditions.

2. Be water-wise Ideally water plants early in the morning, to avoid evaporation loss during the day. On warm summer days, evening watering is also likely to be effective, the dry soil soaking it in readily and low humidity at night reducing risk of disease. To determine the need for watering, inspect the soil at a spade’s depth. If the soil feels damp, there is unlikely to be any need to water, but if it is dry, then watering is probably required for some plants.

3. TOMATOES Tomatoes produce abundant delicious

fruits in a range of colours, shapes and sizes and are best planted outside in early summer. Roots should be kept moist but never waterlogged. Pots and grow-bags require frequent watering, particularly once plants become more established. Irregular watering can result in splitting and blossom-end rot, whereas overwatering can impair flavour.

4. ‘Come again’ salads Produce your own mixed salads by growing a range of leafy salads and vegetables that can be cut and will then sprout (come) again. Harvesting the young leaves when you need them prevents plants from maturing and ensures several harvests of small, tender, mild-flavoured leaves over a long period of time. Popular crops include basil, beetroot, chicory, chard, endive, leaf celery, lettuce, pak choi, parsley, radicchio, red kale, rocket, sorrel and spinach.

5. Summer hanging baskets Hanging baskets provide valuable colour at eye level. Choose vibrant bedding plants for a short-term show or herbs, shrubs and evergreens for a long-lasting 18 Eastside | www.eastsidemag.co.uk

GARDENING

display. Popular summer varieties include Argyranthemum, Lysimachia (creeping jenny), Dichondra ‘Silver Falls’, Fuchsia, Pelargonium (geraniums), Lobelia,Viola (pansies), Petunia, Salvia and Nicotiana (tobacco plants).

6. LOVE YOUR LAWN At this time of year, the lawn is actively growing and requires feeding, mosskilling, weeding and regular mowing. If you really want to impress your neighbours a striped lawn looks very impressive, and isn’t that difficult to achieve if your mower has a rear roller. Rectangular lawns are easier to stripe than irregularly shaped lawns, but with a bit of practice, you can stripe up any lawn.

borders, containers and hanging baskets. Bedding can be grown from seed, bought as young seedlings (plug plants) or purchased as pot-grown specimens, often in multi-packs and cellular trays, ready for planting. Marigolds, calendula, dianthus, forget-me-nots, geraniums and begonias will all add striking colour.

8. Stake tall or floppy plants Perennials in borders often put on strong lush growth that makes them vulnerable to collapse, especially after heavy rain or strong winds. Staking them early in the season will help avoid disaster. In particular; tall plants and hybrids with large flowers, such as sunflowers, require additional support.

7. Plant out summer bedding

9. PRUNE SPRINGFLOWERING SHRUBS

Bedding plants provide a temporary decorative seasonal display for beds,

Early-flowering shrubs are pruned after flowering (in late winter to spring and

early summer, depending on the shrub). They usually flower on the previous year’s growth. Pruning immediately after flowering allows the maximum time for development of young growth to provide the following year’s flowers before the end of summer.

10. Keep greenhouses cool Greenhouses, whether of glass or plastic, can overheat in sunny weather. Plants can be protected from excess heat by shading and ventilation. For effective ventilation, monitor greenhouse temperature (ideally keep the internal temperature below 27ºC), open all doors and vents on sunny days and, if necessary, temporarily remove panes. LOCKDOWN

Life in lockdown HOW WAS IT FOR YOU AND WHAT ARE YOU LOOKING FORWARD TO THE MOST? WE ASKED SOME LOCAL FACES TO SHARE THEIR EXPERIENCES AND HOPES. 020. That was the year, that was. It will go down in history as a time in which everything we held to be a part of ‘normal’ life was turned on its head or simply vanished under lockdown. Gone was our way of life and in thousands of cases, life itself. The cost in lives was counted alongside the cost in divided families, loss of jobs or livelihood, interrupted education, fractured friendships and a great deal more. But what about the effects at grass roots level in our region? We asked some well-known faces in society and business how they will remember the pandemic year. What was the worst part for them? And could anything good possibly emerge to be weighed against it? Their answers were surprisingly different. The battle against Covid19 is, of course, far from over. As this was being written, shops and shopping centres stood on the brink of the lifting of the order which forced retail outlets to close. This brought immense relief to the already hard-hit sector. But the mood was cautious when Eastside spoke to key people in retail. At the Frenchgate shopping centre in Doncaster, measures governing how the complex will welcome back shoppers have long been in place. The centre has remained partially open throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, with a handful of essential stores and services continuing to trade. The message from Frenchgate’s management was emphatically stay safe.

2

Measures have been put in place to ensure that everyone visiting the centre, shoppers, and staff alike, feel safe and confident to do so. An enjoyable and comfortable shopping experience is paramount. Centre manager Paddy Mellon explained: “We are thankful for all of our key workers, including our retailers, who have been committed to ensuring our customers and colleagues are safe. “Ensuring the safety of our shoppers and staff is of the utmost importance and we have made careful and considered decisions to introduce a number of responsible measures to achieve this. All stores will have a limited capacity to ensure everyone can adhere to social distancing. We are advising our customers that queuing is highly likely, and to be prepared for this and to plan their shopping trip. “As a centre, we have upgraded our

current footfall tracker system to allow for more precise, timely counts of footfall. By using this technology, we can control the capacity within the centre.” Other measures include a one-way and keep-left system to maintain customer flow through some areas of the mall where space is limited, allowing customers to pass safely. Directional signage has been installed throughout the centre, on the floor as well as eye level, to ensure customers are aware of the new system. Hand sanitising stations are now available throughout the centre and the centre’s award-winning cleaning team will be carrying out increased cleaning activities. In addition, the centre has introduced a COVID-19 Code of Conduct which will make shoppers visit to Frenchgate as enjoyable as possible.

LOCKDOWN

Etc… Etc… Etc… has two stores in the area – one in Bawtry and one at Yorkshire Wildlife Park – both of which had to be closed when lockdown hit with staff being furloughed. Owner Elaine used her time wisely and after a short break decided to refurbish her Bawtry outlet, which was able to re-open on 15 June with a brand new look. “Along with the refurbishment we’ve been able to introduce new stock and new suppliers into the shops, including some wonderful Liberty print facemasks,” said Elaine. Support for the quirky gift and accessories shop never wavered during lockdown, in fact, customers were pestering her to get back up and running. “For the first two weeks I didn’t do anything in the shop, I didn’t even collect the mail,” explained Elaine. “But then people asked if I was doing anything online – I only had a

Facebook page but thought I’d give it a go. I felt nervous as I didn’t think it was essential and felt uncomfortable going to the post office so I found a company who would collect from my doorstep and deliver things the next day. It seemed the right thing to do. I was grateful for the support, it made me feel I hadn’t been forgotten.” It was whilst undertaking these online orders that, and after a bit of prompting from her son who lives in New Zealand, Elaine decided to improve her digital knowledge further. She enrolled on a free Google digital marketing course, which she’s been working her way through and plans to put anything she’s learned into practice. Looking beyond the Covid-19 pandemic and a return to ‘normal’, Elaine concluded: “I think the lockdown has given me chance to take a step back and plan for the future. I’ve found I really love making things so have made the decision to close the Yorkshire Wildlife Park shop and extend the Bawtry shop to include a bigger focus on crafts and designs, things I can make.” Keep an eye on her Facebook page as there’ll be a big stock clearance coming up. Olivia Poole works at Chique in Armthorpe and would usually, at this time of year, be helping school leavers

choose their prom dresses or race-goers get ready for the St Leger festival in September. She shares the concerns of many small indpendent businesses. “I think one of the most challenging things during lockdown is the worry of how we all will bounce back from this, she said. “We’re so grateful for our amazing supportive customers but the knock on effect is huge.” It’s not all bad though. “As difficult as these times have been some really good things have come out of it; it’s made key workers, especially NHS staff, get the appreciation and recognition they deserve,” Olivia continued. “Also there has been a huge sense of togetherness, seeing communities all over the country really pulling together and supporting each other has been really amazing. I think it has reminded us all that it is nice to be nice. “All the staff at Chique are super excited to be reopening and to see all of our lovely supportive customers again. We have missed them very much! To celebrate the reopening we are offering 20 per cent discount to all NHS workers and we also have so many special offers in store too.” At the time of writing, the government had yet to make a conclusive decision on the re-opening of the hospitality industry, although a date of 4 July had been slated. It has been a particularly tough time for many of our local bars, restaurants and hotels. The Crown Hotel in Bawtry opened from 1 June for essential business travellers and workers but is ready to start welcoming guests once again. “So much has changed in the world over the past few months, yet here in Bawtry at the Crown and Bawtry Hall we have been busy behind the scenes to ensure that as the government updates come in we are ready to welcome back our fabulous guests,” said sales manager Katey Dent. “Whilst it has been a sad time for the many wedding couples postponing their big day, we have been working with the couples to move their dates along with suppliers to ensure they will

have the big day they dreamed of at our venues.” Before lockdown started, The Crown Hotel was in the midst of a major refurbishment to its exterior and that continued, with directors Craig Dowie and Jason Cooper even chipping in themselves. Scaffolding went up at the end of May and the front of the hotel has now been stunningly rendered. Signage, canopies and exterior furniture for alfresco eating and drinking will follow shortly. Bawtry Hall’s gardeners, meanwhile, have been getting the outside of venue ship-shape, ready for when the first weddings can be held. Chef Keegan James Loveday used his time on furlough to volunteer as a service assistant for the Doncaster Royal Infirmary; his jobs included cleaning wards and public areas, moving patients around the hospital and helping with laundry and mail delivery.

Keegan James Loveday

“We’re so proud of him,” added Katey. “He was nominated as a Doncaster Chamber Business Hero, and has been interviewed on BBC Radio and appeared in local press!” “We have kept The Crown Hotel and Bawtry visible on social media channels; this has ensured wedding and event enquiries are still coming into both venues as it has been a good time for couples at home to plan. Our events bring guests into Bawtry which helps boost the local economy. 2021 and 2022 is looking really busy and we cannot wait to get back,” concluded Katey.

“Whilst it has been a sad time for the many wedding couples postponing their big day, we have been working with the couples to move their dates along with suppliers to ensure they will have the big day they dreamed of at our venues.”

As the lockdown for businesses gradually began to ease, many local independent businesses were busy behind the scenes making plans to re-open safely to ensure their customers and staff feel safe and have peace of mind. Many had already displayed innovative ways of keeping their customers happy with new online services, virtual showrooms and tours, home delivery and takeaway options. Now, as people look to take their first tentative steps to shopping in person, the retail outlets have taken all the necessary steps to ensure social distancing is adhered to with many small shops operating a one in, one out policy. Screens have been fitted where required, sanitising stations and one-to-one appointments have been adopted by many Bawtry retailers. As times remain uncertain, shopping locally has never been a better option. Bawtry’s small, independent businesses have safety and their customers’ interests and wellbeing at the very heart of what they do and need your support now more than ever.

A pathway to sporting success INDIVIDUAL DEVELOPMENT PLANS AT QUEEN ETHELBURGA’S GIVE STUDENTS THE CHANCE TO ACCESS THEIR FULL ATHLETIC POTENTIAL. Yorkshire school is supporting students looking to compete at the highest levels of sport, through a new Performance Pathway it is launching in September 2020. Set in 220 acres of stunning Yorkshire countryside, Queen Ethelburga’s Collegiate is a top performing independent day and boarding school for girls and boys aged three months to 19 years. The Team QE Performance Pathway will offer specialised training and development for those students with the potential and determination to push themselves to compete in their chosen sport, as part of a wide and varied curriculum. Using the dedicated sports village on campus, the professional team of coaches will create Individual Development Plans (IDPs) for each Pathway student, with age-based strength and conditioning programmes, use of video analysis tools appropriate to professional sport and ongoing nutritional guidance; to support each student to access their full athletic potential. Head of Sport and ex-professional rugby player Rob Rawlinson explains the Pathway approach: “The Collegiate

will always have the ethos of sport for all. A supportive environment where students can try their hand at a whole host of sports and activities, to encourage them to grow up to lead healthy, active lifestyles. “The Performance Pathway gives students the opportunity to see what competitive sport really looks like. An environment where only the very highest standards will be accepted, where students can push themselves to achieve their full potential, both mentally and physically. Where students will be supported to become dedicated and driven sports men and women who will thrive in competitive situations. “Key to this approach is our coaching delivery. A games based approach keeps students active and engaged for longer, allowing them more chances to practice under pressure. Gone are the days of standing in a line and waiting for a turn or shot, we want our students to be equipped with the tools to stay calm and

execute the right skill, in a pressured competitive environment. We also find that the more we do this, the better decision makers students become, which allows them to think clearly under pressure. Something that helps them in every facet of life. “Many former QE Students have gone on to university scholarships and professional opportunities in the UK and internationally. They all credit the work completed at QE as a crucial part of their success.” The Pathway is accessible to QE students, through a competitive application and selection process. PDO Thread Lifting Thread lifting is a minimally invasive procedure which involves lifting sagging skin from different parts of the face, neck and body using special absorbable threads without making surgical incisions. This results in skin tightening and when applied at a deeper level also results in reduction of excessive fat in specific body areas. PDO thread lifting is used for treating frown lines, smile lines, tear troughs and neck wrinkles. Lifting is indicated for jowl lines, double chins, face contouring, mandibular profiling, buttocks, knees and thigh lifting. It is also used for fat reduction in the abdomen (tummy), underarms or bra line area. One treatment is usually adequate and can last up to 18-24 months. Follow up is after a month and a top up treatment can be applied.

Dermal Fillers

Soprano ICE Laser Hair Removal

Dermal fillers are used to rejuvenate and revitalise the skin through the reduction of deep facial lines. Dermal fillers contain collagen material made of synthetic/natural substance termed as hyaluronic acid, which is injected into the dermis in the form of a soft gel (under the skin) of the client to augment soft tissues. Results are visible instantly.

This is the process of removing unwanted hair by exposure to pulses of laser light that destroy the hair follicles. An intense light (laser) is passed over the skin where the unwanted hair exists and this damages the hair follicle and inhibits future hair growth. Lasers selectively target hairs while leaving the surrounding skin undamaged. This innovative laser provides faster treatments, making it preferable for large areas such as the legs and back, is virtually painless and can naturally treat tanned skin. The most common areas of hair removal are the bikini area, underarms, arms, upper lip, legs, neck, and back.

LPG Endermologie A procedure that uses a motorised pulsating flap technology that stimulates a type of skin cells called fibroblasts. The technique gently stimulates dormant cellular activity naturally, painlessly and with no known side effects. The targeted cells then transform the skin from within by stimulating the natural production of collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid – substances that are essential for skin firmness, tightness, volume and suppleness.

Hydrafacial For instant impact Hydrafacial leaves you looking and feeling terrific after the first treatment with a natural, glowing complexion. It’s a pleasant experience that takes just 30 minutes, and the more you use it the healthier your skin becomes.

Wrinkle relaxing treatments Medisculpt Therapy This revolutionary medically-monitored weight loss programme helps you achieve your desired weight loss at a healthy but consistent rate. G&M Healthcare will oversee your weight loss programme, which includes the nutritional weight loss diet and body sculpting with the LPG Endermologie machine for skin tightening to avoid sagging and loose skin after losing weight and with the Exilis EliteTM or Vanquish Me machines for body fat reduction in stubborn areas like the tummy, thighs or arms. 32 Eastside | www.eastsidemag.co.uk

Forehead creases, frown lines, crow’s feet, mouth and bunny lines can be eased with prescription-only medication like Bocouture or Azzalure. This treatment can also be used for eyebrow lifting, dimpled chins and downturned smiles.

Have you gained weight during lock down? THEN CONSIDER OUR MEDICALLY SUPERVISED WEIGHT LOSS PROGRAMME Many of us have relished the extra time afforded by the corona virus national lockdown which has confined us to our homes for weeks on end; but lockdown has not been kind to the Nation’s waistlines. One survey of 1,000 people, commissioned by a well-known diet brand, noted that a third of the population gained half a stone or more during the first eight weeks of lockdown. These unprecedented times, which have put our normal lives on hold, have meant that many of us have piled on the pounds and will now struggle to shift them again. The impact of COVID-19 on our society means that weight gain could have a detrimental effect on your ability to combat the virus, so if you’re not the healthy weight you should be, then undertaking our medically supervised weight loss programme may be an option. Consider the following and I bet you can identify with one of these scenarios, and how it is directly impacting on your own health and wellbeing during lockdown. Some of us are trying to maintain a semblance of work from our dining table, conducting meetings online and barely upping our step count all day long. With no commute, the post-work gyms and spin classes on

hold, and even the trip out to get a sandwich at lunchtime replaced by a gentle saunter to the fridge, means that exercise levels have plummeted dramatically. Others are also tearing their hair out whilst they attempt to be a poor facsimile of their children’s teachers, with no walking on school runs to up their exercise quota, and only a halfhearted attempt to keep up with Joe Wicks every day on You Tube. The lure of a rewarding glass of wine at the end of the day is ever present. The mandated ‘stay at home’ message, which permitted only one trip outside to exercise per day dramatically increased the uptake of Netflix subscriptions, cue binge viewing and binge eating from the comfort of the sofa. Then there are the bakers! Panic buying before lockdown may have led to a run on toilet roll, but it also cleared the shelves of flour, sugar and yeast when half the nation decided to channel their inner Mary Berry and Paul Hollywood to bake multiple cakes and bread. It’s clear that this increase in carbs could never be used up in the one-hour exercise slot mandated by the government briefings, assuming you could tear yourself away from the latest box set!

We’re all struggling with weight at the best of times; in fact, according to NHS statistics almost 36% of the UK adult population are classified as overweight, and a further 29% as obese. The significant inactivity and increased calorific intake during lockdown have not helped these statistics. The message that obesity is linked to a reduced life expectancy and a greater risk of heart disease and cancer is well known, but there’s now a new message, as obesity has been identified as a significant risk factor in COVID-19 survival. UK Prime Minister, Boris Johnson even noted that his obesity had a direct impact on him ending up in an intensive care unit when he contracted the virus. Many studies have now shown that there is a greater risk of hospitalisation and death from COVID-19 in those with increased levels of obesity. NHS data which studied 17,000 hospital admissions showed that death rates were 40% higher in patients with a BMI over 30 which classifies them as obese. Being overweight and unfit means that an individual has a reduced lung capacity compared to healthy individuals; this makes it harder for the lungs to supply oxygen to the body’s vital organs when they are compromised by the virus, leading to an increased need for ventilation. Practising social distancing whilst we wait for a vaccine is one thing, but weight loss is probably our best weapon in the fight against COVID-19. As well as increased levels of exercise and a healthier diet - stop that bread making right now – one of the things you may consider is our medically supervised weight loss programme.

A solution Although not available on the NHS, The Virtual Slimming Clinic offer Saxenda®, and Ozempic®, which are both licensed medications. They are prescribed for you based on your medical history, weight, and lifestyle considerations, during a consulta-

tion, which will assess your suitability for treatment. Clinical studies have shown that over half of people taking the medication for three years, alongside a reduced-calorie meal plan and exercise regime, achieved significant weight loss in the first year and maintained the weight loss, compared to those who just followed the diet and exercise programme alone.

About the medications? Liraglutide is an FDA approved medication which is licensed to treat type2 diabetes under the brand name of Victoza®, and weight loss under the brand name of Saxenda®. Semaglutide, which is manufactured by the same pharmaceutical company, is following the same licensing process as Liraglutide. It too, is an FDA approved medication licensed to treat type-2 diabetes under the brand name of Ozempic®, and is currently undergoing phase 3 clinical trials to gain a license to treat weight loss. Ozempic® is therefore prescribed ‘off-label’ at this time for weight loss.

How do they work? Both Saxenda® and Ozempic® mimic the action of the body’s natural hormone (GLP-1) which regulates appetite and food intake. GLP-1 makes you feel full, hence your appetite is reduced. It also delays the time it takes for the stomach to empty, keeping you feeling full and satisfied for longer. Both of these actions lead to lower calorie intake and subsequent weight loss.

How are they given? A simple and painless injection is selfadministered each day (Saxenda®) or each week (Ozempic®) using an easyto-use pen that is pre-filled with the medication.

Break from the norm WORKING FROM HOME? THESE SEVEN SIMPLE STEPS WILL ENSURE IT’S A HAPPY AND PRODUCTIVE EXPERIENCE. ow did lockdown affect you? It’s fair to say that life has become more difficult for everyone. Coronavirus (COVID-19) has changed everything, and we have all had to adjust to new ways of living and working. If you were able to work from home, how have you adapted? There are some perks to working from home we can all enjoy (bye bye commute!), but feeling stress, boredom, anxiety and uncertainty

H

is also completely normal. Alongside this, many of us are worried about future job prospects and trying to look after kids as well. With your health and wellbeing at the forefront of their minds, the NHS has provided seven simple tips to help you adjust to working at home, feel more productive and take care of your mental health in these difficult times.

045 ESide June20 17/06/2020 10:15 Page 1

BUSINESS

1. Establish your own routine Without steady schedules, the lines between work and personal time can get blurred and be stressful to get right. Try to follow your normal sleep and work patterns where you can, and stay consistent. Get up at the same time, eat breakfast, and get out of your pyjamas! Try scheduling in your “commute time” and spend it exercising, reading or listening to music before logging in. Most importantly, when your workday stops, stop working. Shut down, stop checking emails and focus on your home life. And at the end of the day, try to get to bed at your usual time.

2. Make a dedicated workspace This follows on from point 1: when we live and work in the same space, it can create anxiety and stop us being able to focus. If you can, find a quiet space away from other people and distractions like the TV (or the kitchen, when you feel snacky). Get everything you need in one place, before you start work – chargers, pens, paper and anything else – and shut the door if you can. Even in a small or shared space, try to designate an area as your workspace. Lastly, get comfortable. While it might be tempting to sit on the sofa, it’s much better to sit at a desk or table. If you do not have office furniture like an adjustable chair, try using things like cushions to support you in your chair, or a box as a footrest.

3. Give yourself a break Working at home can make us feel like we have to be available all the time. But just being “present” is no use to anyone if your mental health is suffering. Making time for breaks is important to help manage feelings of stress – try to take lunch and regular screen breaks. Give yourself time to concentrate on something else so you feel more focused when you return. Even just five to ten minutes of short breaks each hour can really help your productivity too. If possible, set a time to go for a walk,

Balancing act... Many of us are having to juggle childcare as well as work responsibilities

run or bike ride for some fresh air – just make sure to stay at least two metres apart from others, in line with social distancing guidance.

4. Stay connected Feeling isolated is normal right now. But there are lots of ways to stay in touch with those who matter – boosting their mental wellbeing as well as our own. In and out of work, human interaction matters. Schedule video calls and pick up the phone instead of emailing. If you’re struggling with working at home then speak to your colleagues or manager about your concerns. And remember, your colleagues probably feel the same as you! Ask how they’re doing and whether there are ways you can support each other. Make time to socialise virtually – schedule in a digital coffee break or Friday online get-together.

you still have work to do and need quiet time to do it, and share your schedule. Similarly, set boundaries with work. It’s easier to stay logged on when your home is your office, but try to switch off from work when the day is over and enjoy time with family at home.

6. Start thinking longer term We may have to work from home for longer, so think about ways you could improve how you work while at home. If you have a garden, could you work there if the weather’s warm? Try to explore how you work with others. Are there different ways to talk online or new software you could use? Do not worry about getting everything right straightaway. It takes time to get used to juggling a new work-life balance.

5. But set boundaries

7. Be kind to yourself

Setting boundaries with other members of your household is key to mental wellbeing while working at home. You can be more flexible when working from home, so enjoy it. But it can also be difficult if there are new distractions to deal with, like children at home, who may think you are on holiday and want to spend time with you. Have a discussion about your needs, especially with family. Remind them that

Remember, this is an unusual situation and things will not feel normal! Be kind to yourself and acknowledge that you might not be as productive as you usually would be. Be realistic about what you can achieve given the circumstances, and relax when your work is done. For further health and wellbeing advice, visit www.nhs.co.uk Eastside | www.eastsidemag.co.uk 45

Hit the road in style...

Fiat 500

AS LONG AS IT’S ITALIAN STYLE. THESE HEAD-TURNERS ARE THE EPITOME OF COOL – AND PERFECT FOR A SUMMER DRIVE. ou can have any colour you like – as long as it’s red. Of course, we’ve twisted his words somewhat, but Henry Ford would never have understood modern Italian cars. Driving is a passion in Italy and it’s doubtful whether old Henry had much of that. He’ll go down in bunk (sorry, history) as being about as exciting as having your ears syringed. Our trio of cars featured this month are on the face of it very, very different. But to drive any of them lifts the spirits like the hit from a doppio espresso. The red is also a reminder that the

Y

cars share the same bloodline. They should do. All three are made by the same people, namely Fiat Chrysler. The parent company can be proud of its newborn, the all-electric version of the iconic Fiat 500. It’s a first for Fiat and a first for Fiat Chrysler, come to that. With a promised 199-mile range, the youngster is perfectly poised to make inroads in the ever-growing electric car market. If you have never driven a 500, you really should. The first impression is that it is small and it takes a while to overcome the compulsion to get out of

the car to change gear. The other thing you will notice is that other drivers are looking at you quizzically. It’s a common misperception that Fiat Cinquecentos are driven only by girls called Emma or Emily, who are aged 17/18 and currently deciding whether to have a gap year or go straight to uni. This impression can be tested by a simple drive down Ecclesall Road most Saturdays. The young ladies concerned may wish to know that orders are now being taken for a special convertible model of the electric wonder, named La Prima.Yours

for £29,000. Of course, you can buy a 500 for far less than that. Whichever model you choose, you’ll soon fall for the little fella. Driving this car puts a smile on your face. My smile would be about as wide as Park Square roundabout if I were ever to get my mitts on our next choice. The Ferrari SF90 Stradale is another first. It’s certainly the first hybrid car to

be made by Maranello, something that would have been unthinkable only a few years ago. It’s also the first to be equipped with four-wheel drive. And it happens to be the most powerful Ferrari ever. Its V8 engine and accompanying electric motor combine to deliver 1,000 bhp.Yes, you read it right. A thousand. A grand. That dizzying power output hurls it to Alfa Romeo Giulia

60 from standstill in a mere 2.5 seconds. But you’re not interested in that. In fact I doubt you’ve listened to a word I’ve said. No, you just need to look at the car to see why wealthy buyers are prepared to pay handsome premiums over list price in order to secure one. The car is visually perfect, from every angle. I would sit for hours just looking at it. If I actually owned one, I’d talk to it as well. So tear your eyes from the page and we’ll finish with a car from a great Italian marque, which sits somewhere in the middle of the two extremes of fun car and supercar. But the new Alfa Romeo Giulia is far from being a middle-of-the-road family saloon. Instead it’s a fire-breathing beast of a car thanks to its 2.9-litre V6 biturbo engine. That little assortment give it a power output of well in excess of 500bhp. Add to that an eight-speed auto transmission designed for lightning-fast gear changes and it becomes a serious performance car. Little wonder then that this is the car to restore Alfa’s glory days. Just make sure it’s red. Eastside | www.eastsidemag.co.uk 47

Together, the two units produce a system output of 162 kW/220hp. Other highlights of the new model include a newly designed radiator grille, LED headlamps and foglamps as standard, LED rear lights in a new design, new body finishes, new light alloy wheels, new digital dash display and 5-inch colour screen as standard and a new range of leather trims and interior surfaces. IN BRIEF

Care home cuts are perfect pickme-up For residents of HC One Care Home in Swallownest, a weekly visit from Rotherham College hairdressing student Georgia Hosford has come to mean far more than simply a chance to freshen up their tresses. Since lockdown began, it’s one of the rare Georgia Hosford times they are able to leave their rooms and enter the main area of the building. Georgia, who is aged 20 and lives in Swallownest, has been part of the HC One residential cleaning bank staff team for almost a year. Due to all staff and residents testing negative for COVID-19 and adhering to strict social distancing measures, Georgia has been able continue with her hairdressing duties. Treatments range from perms and sets, colours, blue and pink rinses, haircuts and beard trims for the men, but those aren’t the only skills learnt at College that Georgia is putting to use. She said: “There’s quite a few older ladies that come into the salon at College first-thing on a morning and have their hair done, which gets you talking and develops your people and social skills.” The weekly hair treatments offer residents the chance to socialise and enjoy some much-needed pamper time. Georgia said: “It’s hard because the residents aren’t allowed to see family and so they don’t get to see many people; you might the only person they see that day, so it’s a chance to brighten up someone’s day.” Rotherham College Hairdressing lecturer Anne Derbyshire praised Georgia for her diligence. Anne said: “Georgia has worked very hard in the last three years at College to pursue her dream career of becoming an employable hairdresser, sometimes doubling two jobs at the same time. It has not always been easy but her northern grit and tenacity has kept her going. I am very proud to see Georgia helping out in her key worker role in the care home.” For more information about Rotherham College please visit: www.rotherham.ac.uk/

Many have already displayed innovative ways of keeping their customers happy with new online services, virtual showrooms and tours, home delivery and takeaway options.
