Walking has become a big part of our routine over the last months and if you’re looking for somewhere new to explore we might have what you’re looking for. Health and wellbeing is also at the forefront of our minds and we look at the benefits of juicing. We speak to local girl Emma Jane Garbutt who has had to put her music career on hold but has found success in pageantry, and catch up with David Walliams who is helping to bring a stage performance of his best-selling book, Billionaire Boy, to a car park near you. IN BRIEF

Historic dining at Welbeck Abbey Online preview As Nottinghamshire’s Harley Gallery forges ahead with plans for the opening of a new exhibition in the spring, an online talk has been arranged to give visitors a preview of the celebrated collection. The Jerwood Collection: A Curator’s Choice will be travelling from London to the gallery, which sits within the historic ducal Welbeck estate, for an exclusive year-long exhibition. A free online talk will be held online on 26 March to give visitors the opportunity to get an insight into the collection prior to its opening. The Harley Gallery plans to reopen in the spring, when lockdown restrictions are lifted, with the new exhibition The Jerwood Collection: A Curator’s Choice. An online talk - A Curator’s Choice - at noon on 26 March will introduce the art that will form the new exhibition. Director of the Jerwood Collection, Lara Wardle, will talk about looking after the private art collection and share her thoughts about some of her favourite pieces within the show. It will be the collection’s first ever residency and is programmed to run for a year. It encompasses four exhibitions led by four different curators and will feature works by renowned 20th-century British artists including L S Lowry, Barbara Hepworth, Walter Sickert, and Sir Stanley Spencer RA. There will also be works by leading contemporary artists. The 30-minute lunchtime talks are free. Places can be booked over the phone on 01909 501 700. Those interested in joining are invited to register their interest via email info@harleygallery.co.uk.

Supporting students Student engagement with digital learning at Rotherham College and University Centre Rotherham (UCR) (part of RNN Group alongside North Notts College and Dearne Valley College) has been boosted by providing hundreds of free laptops to their students. The laptops were funded by RNN Group to help disadvantaged students access remote education throughout the pandemic. To date, the Group has distributed 592 laptops alongside 200 sim cards with hotspots to ensure those who don’t have access to Wi-Fi can access the internet. Staff are also in constant communication with tutors to ensure the needs of all learners experiencing digital poverty are addressed. The initiative has had a huge impact on students who were previously struggling to access learning and engage in blended delivery activities. 6 Eastside | www.eastsidemag.co.uk

Historic recipes and stories of 18th century dining at Worksop’s Welbeck Abbey are to be revealed during an online talk hosted by The Harley Gallery on 30 April. Former head curator of silver and metalwork at the V&A Museum, Philippa Glanville, OBE will be guest speaker during the Desserts for a Duchess online event. She will draw on the recipes and bills from the Portland archives held at Welbeck Abbey and Nottingham University to dining. She’ll talk of the entertaining that took place on the estate; the former country seat of the Dukes of Portland. As The Harley Foundation’s Curatorial Advisor for many years and a well-respected author, Philippa is a leading authority on all aspects of historic silver plate and the history of dining. She will talk about desserts and food history and reveal more about the Duchess of Portland, who like her mother-in-law, the Countess of Oxford, was a renowned hostess. Their recipes, garnered from relatives, friends and housekeepers show how they used their gardeners’ skills in cultivating soft fruits, grapes and pineapples to preserve and create exotic desserts. She will also discuss how Duchess Margaret’s table included a 178-piece silver gilt service made by London goldsmiths, John and William Café. The free online talk - Dessert for a Duchess - will take place at 12noon on 30 April.Anyone wishing to book a space on the talk should email info@harleygallery.co.uk. More details about the talks programme can be found on: www.harleygallery.co.uk

Free virtual workshops Award-winning, local law firm, Bhayani HR & Employment Law, is offering free virtual workshops to businesses and charities on COVID related HR and employment issues. The last year has undoubtedly been the most difficult that the business community has had to endure for decades. Huge changes have had to be made to cope with diminishing work and income (or none at all) and many businesses have found themselves needing ongoing, up to date HR and employment law advice to help them stay abreast of changes resulting from the pandemic. Virtual webinars and workshops (arranged via local chambers of commerce), advice on the radio and newsletters have kept the team busy, as well as responding to an everincreasing number of telephone enquiries – an increase from eight to 60 a day, for example, from the hard-hit 10,000 members of the British Institute of Innkeeping. To access the free “HR and employment law in the COVID world” sessions, or to find out more about the Watertight employment package, contact Bhayani HR & Employment Law on 0114 303 2300 or email hello@bhayanilaw.co.uk.

Miss Doncaster WITH HER MUSIC CAREER PUT ON HOLD DUE TO THE PANDEMIC, EMMA JANE GARBUTT HAS TURNED TO PAGEANTRY AND HAS SET HER SIGHTS ON THE MISS GREAT BRITAIN TITLE. ow we miss live music. Just before lockdown in March last year I’d been down to Birmingham to see Michael Kiwanuka and had already made plans for more live performances later in the year. Sadly, these were either cancelled or postponed (and sometimes postponed again). But if you think you’re missing live music, spare a thought for the performers, with many having their livelihoods taken away from them indefinitely. One such performer is Doncaster-born country music artist Emma Jade Garbutt who find her plans quickly curtailed. You may know Emma from her appearance on The Voice a few years ago and she’s been quietly been building a following that has also seen her perform in Nashville and New York. With her music career put on hold, the 26-year-old has turned to pageantry and after winning the Miss Doncaster GB title, will be competing in Miss Great Britain in September. We caught up with her to talk all things music, pageantry and about her extensive charity work.

H

Hi Emma. Tell us about yourself.

Hi! My name is Emma Jade, I’m 26 years old and I’m primarily a country music artist from here in Doncaster. I have been playing country music since the age of 14, however, the pandemic has meant that I haven’t been able to play a show since March 2020. I’m now the reigning Miss Doncaster GB and will compete to be Miss Great Britain. I’m a big advocate for women’s rights, I’m an ambassador for a period poverty charity called Freedom 4 Girls. I also work with Cancer Research UK and Alex’s Wish. Where did the passion for music come from?

Honestly, I’ve played music since I was a kid. My mum let me play different instruments in primary school and I

eventually settled on the drums when I got into secondary school. I’ve always been a singer, when I was young, I wanted to be a dancer but I honestly have two left feet! So, my gran took me to join a choir and I ended up loving to sing. I taught myself to play guitar at 14 by learning the chords to the original Taylor Swift songs, this made me look further into country music and I fell in love. It’s been about 12 years now and I love it more every single day. Where did that take you?

Music has taken me all over the world. At the age of 16 I was seen on YouTube by the owner of an event in Nashville called Teen Hoot, he invited me over and I ended up being the first international artist to play at the show. At 18 I auditioned for The Voice UK and became a member of Team Tom which was incredible! Since then, I have toured all over playing country music to some amazing crowds. Last year we were really lucky at

the beginning of the year to get out to New York and Nashville to promote a brand I work with called Planet Cowboy. Since March 2020 music has mainly taken me to my dining room to play live streams. Why the switch to pageantry?

It isn’t a switch as such, just a change for now. There are a few reasons I decided to apply for Miss Great Britain. I really miss being on stage, there really isn’t any feeling that compares to it. My friend Jen is the current Miss Great Britain and I started to see how many amazing things she gets to do and how she gets to use her platform for good. I thought it would be such a great opportunity to reach new audiences and talk about the things I advocate for. It’s also just really fun! I was bullied quite badly as a teenager, especially when I was on The Voice UK, so this is such a great confidence builder. What does pageantry involve?

I think there’s a big stereotype when it comes to pageants, people seem to think its all about how we look and the most beautiful girl always wins. This really isn’t the case anymore, being a pageant queen is all about being a great role model and having the confidence to speak your mind. We have affiliated charities that we all raise money for but we’re all completely different. I personally campaign for the end to period and hygiene poverty, as well as raising money for the Teenage Cancer Trust alongside raising money for the two Miss Great Britain 2021 charities; Cancer Research UK and Alex’s Wish. Of course, we get to dress up and feel glamorous but we also form amazing friendships with the other girls, this is actually the first pageant system I’ve been involved in and it’s amazing to see how supportive the girls are of each other. >>> Eastside | www.eastsidemag.co.uk 11

INTERVIEW

title. I really want to be sure that if the time comes that I will be a great role model to other young women.

Tell us about the Miss Doncaster pageant?

My experience with this has been so different to anybody else’s experience as I became Miss Doncaster GB at the height of the pandemic. Usually, the regional title holders are decided at a final similar to that of the grand finale of Miss Great Britain but unfortunately this year everything had to be done online and behind the scenes. The application process really set the precedent for the rest of my journey with Miss Great Britain, I had to answer quite intense interview questions about who I am as a person and what I believe in. I wish I’d been able to experience the regional final but feel so lucky that my application questions won be the Miss Doncaster GB title. And now you’re competing in Miss Great Britain?

Yes, my Miss Doncaster GB title is a regional title which takes me straight to the final of Miss Great Britain. What will that involve?

Miss Great Britain is really quite intense! I don’t think I was at all prepared for the amazing things I would get to take part in. Of course, the actual finale will be a glamorous two-day event with beautiful dresses and lots of hair and makeup, however, the work towards the finale began last year. There are different extra awards we can win, for example, the talent award or the charity award. Obviously, I’m really hoping to do well in the talent award! I began raising money for Cancer Research UK and Alex’s Wish at the beginning of this year, I love the fact that I get to be involved with two really important charities as part of the competition, hopefully as a whole we will raise a lot of money this year as I know that charities are really struggling through the pandemic. During the two-day finale, we will take part in a fashion wear round, a swimwear round and an evening wear round along with an interview with the judges. Where will that take place?

The grand finale will take place in Leicester in (hopefully!) mid-September.

Will you return to music?

Absolutely! I haven’t left music at all, it’s still my biggest passion and this will never change. As soon as the world is safe again, I will be back out on the road. How have you been spending lockdown?

“I love the fact that I get to be involved with two really important charities as part of the competition, hopefully as a whole we will raise a lot of money this year as I know that charities are really struggling through the pandemic.” to follow my social media accounts and get involved with the work I do with different charities, I have links on my social media pages to donate money to the Teenage Cancer Trust, Cancer Research UK and Alex’s Wish as well as links to donate hygiene products, which I then distribute to people in need. Eventually there will be a public vote round which I would really appreciate votes for! When it comes time I will post about this on my social media pages. My social media pages are all @Emmajademusic

I have been spending lockdown learning! I am currently doing a course in support work in schools so I can hopefully work with young people eventually. I also spend a lot of time writing and playing music, I’ve hosted a few live stream shows over the months, I’m currently planning an online festival to raise money for Cancer Research UK and Alex’s Wish. Any other passions?

My biggest passions really are the charities I do work for. I have been a huge campaigner for period and hygiene poverty for some time now. I’m an ambassador for a charity called Freedom 4 Girls, we collect and distribute feminine hygiene products to people that need them as well as challenging the stigmas, taboos and gender inequalities associated with menstruation so that people feel confident to seek help if they’re experiencing difficulties affording the products they need. Unfortunately, approximately ten per cent of women in the UK say they struggle to afford these products, so we’re always doing our best to help out those in need or at least make people aware that this is a real issue. I also campaign for the Teenage Cancer Trust. I unfortunately lost my best friend to cancer in January this year, the Teenage Cancer Trust were a huge part of his life all the way through his 11-year cancer battle, giving him support when he needed it and even allowing him a place on their wards when he was in his late twenties because that’s where he felt safe and supported. They do such amazing work to support young people with cancer and their families. They deserve every single penny raised and every minute I’m able to give to help.

What are your future plans? How can we support you?

Honestly, the best way to support me is 12 Eastside | www.eastsidemag.co.uk

Currently my plans are to work hard to hopefully take the Miss Great Britain

Orthopaedic Surgery & Sports Injury Specialists

PLATELET RICH PLASMA (PrP) A natural treatment for sports injuries, tendon problems and arthritis

What is Platelet Rich Plasma (PrP)? PrP is an innovative treatment that uses the body’s own growth factors and specialised proteins in order to promote natural healing of tendons, ligaments, soft tissues and even arthritis. There is increasing evidence from scientific studies that PrP can help both acute and chronic conditions reducing the need for surgery. It is becoming popular among elite athletes, such as Tiger Woods and Rafael Nadal, to help heal injuries. PrP refers to the liquid component of

Consultant Profile

blood called plasma which contains a high concentration of platelets and growth factors. These blood constituents can “kick-start” or accelerate the healing process, reducing pain and improving function. What conditions are commonly treated with PrP? PrP is increasingly being used to treat a number of musculoskeletal injuries and conditions. These include: • Tendon Injuries • Sports Injuries • Cartilage problems • Tennis Elbow or Lateral epicondylitis (overuse injury of the wrist and finger extensors tendons at the elbow) • Osteoarthritis of the knee (Non operative treatments include a combination of antiinflammatory medications, physiotherapy, weight loss, bracing and injections) How does PrP work? Platelets contain a large number of proteins which are vital to the healing process in the body. Not only do they activate the healing process, they also cause important cells to bind together which provide the building blocks for healing. When a blood sample is taken it is spun in a machine called a centrifuge. This separates out each of the constituents of blood and creates a highly concentrated layer of platelets, growth factors and white blood cells. When injected into the area of injury they activate the same healing process found in the body but it is amplified and specifically targets the treatment area. What will happen on the day? A tourniquet will be placed on your upper arm and 30 - 60 mls of blood taken from one of your veins with a needle and syringe. The syringe will be placed in the centrifuge machine for 15 minutes and after this the tube containing the blood will show the different layers. The first layer is discarded and the second layer which contains the PRP (between 3-6mls of fluid) is drawn off ready to be used. The area to be treated is cleaned with an antiseptic solution and numbed with a local anaesthetic injection first. This stings a little bit. The PRP is then injected into the joint or soft tissue area to be treated. It is normally a very well tolerated procedure, doesn’t require any significant recovery time and patients can drive afterwards. What are the benefits? PRP has been shown to reduce pain in the conditions listed above with less risks that are associated with steroid injections. It takes longer for the PRP to have an effect due to the different

Consultant Profile

mode of action. It takes at least 2 weeks before you will feel benefit but it can take up to 3 months. No treatment is 100% effective and if you don’t have significant pain relief it can be repeated after 3 months or a different treatment can be used safe in the knowledge that no harm has occurred by trying PRP first. What are the risks and side effects? As you are having an injection of your own blood the risk is very low. With any joint or soft tissue injection there is always a very small chance of an infection developing. The treated area can bruise and bleed a little. Mild pain and swelling may occur for 24-48 hours afterwards. Are all types of PrP the same? No. We only use the highest performing product on the market with supporting clinical research. There are inferior products on the market that contain a lower concentration of the active components. The cost for the PrP treatment is £650. N-stride N-stride is the next step on from PRP and involves a new and unique second centrifuge process. The idea of the second spin is to release the special proteins called antagonist cytokines from white blood cells. Osteoarthritis is associated with an increase in catabolic pro-inflammatory cytokines which contributes to cartilage breakdown. The special proteins in N-stride act on cells in the cartilage to slow the damaging arthritic process by blocking bad cytokines with good cytokines and growth factors. This then slows the arthritic process. Early results suggest that up to 70% of patients can get improvement for 3 years after treatment. The cost for the N-stride treatment is £1250.

Extracting the goodness JUICING IS A QUICK AND EASY WAY OF GIVING THE BODY A SUPER DOSE OF NUTRIENTS. RICHARD ABBEY GETS SOME EXPERT ADVICE ON WHERE TO START. e honest, over the last 12 months or so, have you given thought to what you eat and how much you’re consuming of certain types of foods? Have you been inspired to turn to a plant-based diet or just cut down on the amount of meat you eat? Maybe you’ve cut back on alcohol or tried to increase the amount of fruit and vegetables in your diet.Whatever your choices – and reasons – there’s one unifying theme and that’s taking positive steps to improve your health and wellbeing. As we move into spring there’s no better time to take those positive steps even further by giving yourself a dose of goodness in the form of juicing. Juicing is a process that extracts the juices from fresh fruits and vegetables, usually stripping away most of the solid matter, including the seeds and pulp, from whole fruits and vegetables. This results in a liquid that contains most of the vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants naturally present in the whole fruit or vegetable. “A simple way of describing juicing is

B

that it’s a very quick and easy way of giving the body a super dose of nutrients and goodness in a virtually pre-digested form,” said Nick Ledger, part of UK Juicers, a York-based family business that was one of the first companies to bring specialist juicers for the health enthusiast to the world of online shopping in the UK.They specialise in high quality juicers, blenders, food dryers, sprouters, seeds and other items for a healthy lifestyle. Juicing is sometimes done to detox but can supplement your current diet. “The benefits are as mentioned as above, you’re giving your body an excellent dose of nutrition. Fresh vegetable juice is packed full of vitamins, minerals and live enzymes,” added Nick. And it’s easy to get started, as Nick explains: “To get started you simply need a fruit and vegetable juicer. We tend to specialise in masticating (or ‘cold press’) juicers. These work at a low speed, gently crushing the produce and giving a nutrient dense juice that minimises oxidation and allows the juice to remain fresh for longer. The slow speed also

makes them capable of juicing leafy greens with excellent results.” Juicing methods vary, from squeezing fruit by hand to motor-driven juicers. Two common types of juicers include centrifugal – these juicers grind fruits and vegetables into pulp through a highspeed spinning action with a cutting blade. The spinning also separates the juice from the solids. Cold-press juicers, as mentioned by Nick, crush and press fruits and vegetables much more slowly to obtain as much juice as possible. The nutritional quality of juice obtained from both types of juicers is similar. Once you’ve got your equipment sorted, there are a whole host of recipes to try, including this favourite one from Nick: “A really good introduction to the benefits of juicing is carrot, apple and ginger. Juice two apples with a 1cm slice of fresh ginger and make up to one pint with carrots. It’s delicious!” On this page you’ll find some more recipes from Nick to try.Visit www.ukjuicers.com to find out more.

RECIPES: Carrot, Apple & Ginger 8 Medium Carrots 2 Apples (Coxes, Royal Gala or Braeburn) Slice of root Ginger (to taste) Carrot, Apple & Ginger makes a delicious starting point for those who have never tried vegetable juices. It has superb nutritional qualities: carrots are a good source of Vitamin A and Beta Carotenes, providing anti-ageing and cancer-fighting antioxidants. Apples have an abundance of pectin which forms a gel that breaks down toxins in the intestines and helps maintain a healthy bowel function. Ginger is an excellent tonic for the entire digestive system. In fact, Carrot & Apple is a staple drink of the Gerson Institute of Cancer Therapy. This drink can be easily made with any fruit & vegetable juicer. Carrots need to form the majority of the juice otherwise the flavour of the apples will dominate. The ginger provides a nice touch of spice, but use it sparingly - it’s powerful stuff! ***

Carrot, Parsley, Spinach & Celery 4 Carrots 1 Small Handful of Flat Leaf Parsely 100g Fresh Spinach 2 Sticks of Celery Parsley, particularly the flat leaf kind rather than the curly, provides a very potent herbal juice. As such, it should never be taken in too large a quantity. Its properties can help maintain healthy blood vessels and a normal function of the adrenal and thyroid glands, while also acting as a diuretic. The combination is believed to provide excellent qualities for regenerating and healing tissues within the body.

juicing, but if you want more zest in the drink, leave some peel on. ***

Carrot, Greens & Hemp Milk 40-50g of Hemp seeds (preferably germinated) 4 Medium Carrots 100g Spinach 2 Sticks of Celery Fresh Rosemary (optional) Hemp is one of the most nutritionally complete foods available and is rich in Omega 3, 6 and 9 essential fatty acids. It is also an excellent source of protein. To get the best out of hemp it needs to be thoroughly washed and it is often a good idea to soak the seeds for 8-12 hours to start germination, and perhaps even to sprout them as this can increase nutrient availability. This drink is best made with a twin gear juicer. A small amount of hemp should be placed in the feeding chamber and fed down with harder produce. To really break down the hemp it is best to re-feed the pulp once or twice. ***

Wheatgrass Zinger 1oz Fresh Wheatgrass Juice 1 Apple ½ a Lemon Slice of Ginger (to taste) A Wheatgrass Zinger provides an excellent

introduction to wheatgrass and may be preferable for those who aren’t too keen on the intensity of straight wheatgrass juice. Simply juice the wheatgrass in the appropriate juicer followed by the remaining ingredients. ***

Pineapple, Mango, Apple, Lime & Ginger Smoothie 4 Rings of Fresh Pineapple 1 Mango 5 Apples 1 Lime Slice of Ginger (to taste) 4 Healthy Dollops of Fresh Yoghurt The combination of pineapple, mango, lime, ginger and yoghurt has to be tasted to be believed: it’s rather special. Even more so if you’re lucky enough to find a supply of Indian or Pakistani mangoes. This drink serves serves. Prepare and freeze the mango and pineapple. Add to a blender followed by the juiced apples, lime and ginger. Finally, add the yoghurt, blend well and serve immediately.

Apple, Pear & Lime 3 Apples (Coxes, Gala or Braeburn) 2 Pears ½ a Lime This juice is simple but refreshing and delicious. As well as containing carotenes, pectin, potassium and Vitamin C from the apples, the pears provide an excellent source of soluble fibre. Simply juice the ingredients in any combination. What is MediSculpt Therapy? G&M HEALTHCARE CAN HELP YOU ACHIEVE YOUR WEIGHT LOSS GOALS. ediSculpt Therapy is a non-surgical, very low calorie weight loss program which can combat obesity and some chronic medical conditions like type 2 Diabetes Mellitus, high cholesterol, hypertension and sleep apnoea. Medisculpt Therapy comprises of three main components; the diet, which is based on high protein foods with low carbohydrate and low fat contents, and two body contouring treatments – LPG Endermologie and Vanquish MeTM or Exilis Elite machines. The body contouring treatment LPG Endermologie is used for skin tightening in order to prevent the development of loose and sagging skin during and after the rapid weight loss. The second body contouring machine is a radio frequency machine for body fat reduction. G&M Healthcare has both of these machines and the choice of which one to use depends on the treatment package and area of the body requiring treatment. The radio frequency machines result in a significant fat reduction in targeted areas like the tummy, thighs or arms. These treatments are carried out weekly by fully-trained therapists and last about 30-40 minutes each. In total you need about 75-90 minutes per week for your treatments. Weight loss with MediSculpt Therapy is safe, efficient and rapid. The weight loss progress is constantly monitored by a qualified GP and fully trained therapists who check weight loss progress, blood pressure, body fat content, metabolic rates and do blood tests on a regular basis. With regard to the results, they know from experience that a female patient will typically lose one stone a month and a male patient will typically lose one to one and a half stones a month. MediSculpt Therapy consists of six phases, which deliver amazing, safe, efficient and sustainable weight loss. During phase 1 of MediSculpt Therapy the diet comprises of five meals and one snack a day. Protein foods are filling, hence patients don’t feel hungry. To supplement the diet some fruit and vegetables are also allowed on the diet. G&M Healthcare also do metabolic tests to check your metabolic rates and also provide supplements to ensure you don’t lack in essential minerals like magnesium, potassium, sodium chloride, calcium and trace minerals. Once the phase 1 target is achieved after losing about 70 per cent of your target weight, patients are moved onto phase 2 where ‘normal foods’, like weighed amounts of chicken, meat, fish and diary like eggs, are introduced. Once 90 per cent of your target weight loss is achieved patients are weaned to measured amounts of normal eating on phase 3. Thereafter phases 4-6 are stabilisation phases to ensure that optimum weaning off from the diet is achieved without putting on back the weight you have lost. After the stabilisation phase there is a life-long maintenance programme where G&M Healthcare six weekly follow ups for review by a therapist who measures your weight and body fat composition. Follow up is then 3-6 monthly for one year or as required thereafter.

Kerry Norris Lost 7st on Medisculpt Therapy The cost of the program depends on the package you choose. There are three price packages – basic, standard and deluxe. All consist of your consultation fee (£100) and blood test fee (£100) followed by the package fees. Supplement prices are £50/month but vary depending on the package you choose. The basic package is £125/week for only food. The standard package is £250/week for food and body contouring treatments with LPG Endermologie and Vanquish or Exilis Elite. The deluxe package is £300/week and includes food, body contouring treatments, supplements, 4 weekly reviews and blood tests. Recent studies from the Diabetes Remission Clinical Trial (DiRECT), published by G Thom et al in Glasgow in collaboration with the NHS in September this year and by Yiqoao Xin et al in May 2020, have shown that very low calorie diets can cause remission in people with early type 2 Diabetes Mellitus of less than six years since onset. The programme is now being rolled out on a bigger trial of 5,000 people in the UK. WALKING

Walk this way PARKS, GARDENS, WOODLANDS AND CANALS ARE ALL ACCESSIBLE FROM OUR HOMES AND THE PERFECT PLACES TO EXPLORE DURING THIS RESTRICTED TIME. GRAB YOUR WALKING BOOTS AND GET OUTSIDE. hether we’ve been in tiers one, two or three or in full lockdown, walking has been the one constant throughout the whole pandemic. It’s probably formed the largest part of your daily exercise, can be undertaken alone or by the whole family and can be as long or short as you need it to be. If you live in Doncaster, Rotherham or North Nottinghamshire there are plenty of parks, gardens, woodlands and canals to explore, all at a safe distance of course. Welcome to Yorkshire made walking one of their leading campaigns for 2021. WALKING

Doncaster Council are also promoting walking with their ‘Get Doncaster Moving’ initiative. Here, they give some advice on how to make the most of your time outdoors.

Plan Ahead Some of our local parks, woodlands, and nature sites have started to become very busy, making it harder for people to keep a safe distance. Some of our sites still have restricted access to facilities such as public toilets, car parks, and shops, so please check before you set off that you have everything you need.

Walk From Home Please think about walking from your doorstep and exploring local routes as much as possible. Staying local helps to: • Make social distancing easier for everybody’s safety • Keep local footpaths in a good condition by treading down overgrowth • Reduce the number of cars on our roads so accidents are less likely and our air quality is better • Keep communities connected by smiling at familiar faces from a distance, which can help others feel less lonely.

Try different times Some areas are very busy during the daytime, especially from 10am – 4pm. Walking early in the morning, or taking a stroll to enjoy the lighter evenings may be quieter. “Leave Only Footprints and Take Only Memories” Please respect our green spaces and local streets by picking up after yourself and your pets. We kindly ask that everybody follows the Green Cross Code and respects our environment.

DONCASTER VOLUNTEERS LEAD THE WAY TO WELLBEING Usually the groups of walk leaders would be guiding groups on short walks all over the borough as part of their Walking for Health Program with over 300 people attending the walks each week. Whilst this may not be possible now, this has not stopped them helping others in their community and working hard to improve the wellbeing of others in Doncaster through walking. The groups have set up: • Call and text buddies to those they usually walk with so they don’t become lonely • Kindly delivered shopping to those in their group who need to stay at home • Made sure to have socially distanced chats through the window with their neighbours on their daily walks so nobody feels alone • Given advice on local short walking routes for people to do from their homes • Helped us identify where we might need to make improvements for safer walking journeys If you would like to hear from one of the volunteers about how you can get involved locally, or would like to volunteer to support them, please get in touch by visiting https://getdoncastermoving.org/walking Eastside | www.eastsidemag.co.uk 27

PROMOTION

Proud achievements NEW RECORD FOR OXBRIDGE OFFERS AT QUEEN ETHELBURGA’S. ueen Ethelburga’s Collegiate is proud to announce its highest ever number of offers for Oxford and Cambridge Universities. This year, nine students (six Cambridge, three Oxford) successfully navigated a rigorous and challenging application process to gain offers across a range of subjects. For Cambridge University, Samuel Altass has received an offer to study Economics; Olivia Galvinan offer to study History; Lisa Levytska has received an offer to study Modern and Medieval Languages (French and German); Sophia Liversidge an offer to study History and Politics; Amaan Punnu has received an offer to study Land Economy; and Jency Yan an offer to study Natural Sciences. For Oxford University, Akshima Ghosh has received an offer to study Medicine; Jenny Petch, an offer to study Law; and Morgan Richardson has received an offer to study Chemistry. All nine students should be incredibly proud of their achievements, especially this year with the additional logistical challenges posed by the pandemic. Students have needed to remain focused and driven to succeed, engaging with their online learning provision throughout the summer term to ensure they achieved the AS grades needed to support their applications. Since September, they have studied hard to gain the highest scores in admissions tests whilst remaining focused on their challenging schoolwork, and were then faced with the experience of online university interviews, given their inability to visit Oxford or Cambridge in person. The successful students come from both the boarding and day community, with some having joined Queen Ethelburga’s in the King’s Magna Middle School and others starting in Year 12, a number on Academic Scholarships. Each has earnt this fantastic achievement through hard work and dedication, alongside a passion for learning. Kevin Oldershaw, Head of Queen Ethelburga’s College, said “We are incredibly pleased for each of them, as we are for all of our students when they receive offers and go onto take up places at their chosen universities. This success is testament to their academic abilities

and the comprehensive programme of support on offer. The combination of our experienced subject teachers and Sixth Form tutor team, alongside the dedicated Careers Department, means that students are helped to identify their strengths and interests, inspired and encouraged to follow their ambitions, and then supported to achieve them. Students with high aspirations, aiming for the top universities, can also take advantage of QE-appointed admissions consultants, gaining access to additional online and in-person tuition from subjectspecific Cambridge and Oxford tutors. This also helps with admission test preparation and smallgroup meetings to really stretch and challenge the most able. In an increasingly challenging and Principal of Queen Ethelburga’s competitive Collegiate Jeff Smith process, our

provision has really benefitted these and other students, ensuring they complete the wider reading, work experience, internships or extra and super-curricular activities to make their applications really stand out from the crowd!” Speaking of the journey to receiving an Oxbridge offer, student Jenny Petch said, “The process of applying to Oxford was certainly not an easy one; my application required a lot of hard work and preparation (especially as I had to sit an admissions test – the LNAT – in addition to my basic application). However, school offered lots of support throughout the entire admissions process; I was able to access help from teachers and the careers department whenever I needed and this was especially helpful when it came to my personal statement and interview preparation. I am extremely grateful to all the QE staff for the help and support they have given me in the past two years with my application – I couldn’t have done it without them!” For more information about studying at QE, visit qe.org.

ive theatre as we know it might still sadly be some time away from returning, but David Walliams is ready to get the whole family out and entertained. The actor and best-selling children’s author saw the original theatrical production of his 2010 novel Billionaire Boy cut short last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, so with no end in sight to the restrictions on indoor live performances, he’s taking the fun outdoors. Teaming up with the Birmingham Stage Company and Coalition Agency, Walliams is here to save the Easter break for children (and their families) across England by turning the hit stage show into a full-on car park party! Launching last summer, the Car Park Party staged Horrible Histories’ Barmy Britain and followed it in the festive season with Horrible Christmas, playing to over 40,000 people. Now this Spring, it’s the turn of David Walliams’ Billionaire Boy, his classic tale of the richest child in Britain and his quest to find the one thing money can’t buy: a friend. With its rich themes of the importance of family and friendship, it’s a story that couldn’t be more relevant in these times of lockdown and isolation. Each show will be brought to life onstage in a completely COVID-safe environment, with families watching from their own cars, while allowing them to experience the joy and connection that theatre provides. The author was delighted to see his book adapted for the stage in 2019, but in the current climate, the new car park version has special significance for him. He said: “It’s brilliant! It’s very imaginative. I think people are craving some entertainment and especially live entertainment because although the TV has still been on, you haven’t been able to be part of an audience, so this is a great and safe way to enjoy a show. If you have kids who are in all day and home schooling, you really want something you can take your them to do or see. Hopefully this will really entertain families.” While bringing some joy to those families who come to see his show is hugely important to him, David is also just as passionate about providing a platform for the arts to be able to continue in some form during these difficult times. >>>

INTERVIEW

He said: “Well, it is important. I have friends that are actors, directors, designers and so on who have been all out of work because nothing’s been happening. They are absolutely all raring to go to do something. I feel like the audience wants it too. It’s hard to put an exact value on the arts because they enhance your life, but you can’t put a figure on it because it’s not like that. When you read something or see something though, it moves you. It changes the way you think, how you feel about the world and about life. It’s a massive thing and hits people at home. They see something that moves and changes them, something that makes them empathise with people they don’t know, whatever it is. “That’s a really important part of life. It’s a form of storytelling. We always want to tell stories all the time and it’s just a different way of doing it, and I think it’s really important, it’s very life enriching, but obviously it’s hard because it’s not exactly quantifiable, but that’s part of the magic of it isn’t? It’s just this wonderful and life enhancing thing. We all respond differently with different tastes and abilities and that’s part of the magic too. Not everyone agrees on what they like or is interesting to them. “It’s a big part of our culture and also, it’s something we can really celebrate in 38 Eastside | www.eastsidemag.co.uk

this country because we’ve had so many brilliant playwrights and we have the West End. If there’s any other place like it, it’s only Broadway. No other place in the world has that. We have always had a very very vibrant arts culture here and it’s something we really need to protect.” Billionaire Boy tells the story of Joe Spud, the richest kid in the country who becomes friends with Bob, a regular boy he meets when he attends a local comprehensive school. It’s a theme of connection and friendship that David feels is even more important now that children’s lives have changed so radically. He said: “I think it’s very important that they can keep in touch with their friends at the moment. Luckily, technology exists, though not everyone has access to it, but at least with phones and computers you can see people and speak to them. It’s not the same as being with someone though, so it can’t take the place of it, but it is important. “Just checking in with people making sure they are okay is crucial at the moment, because a lot of people are struggling. It’s a hard one because you might not be feeling great yourself because you’re struggling with loneliness or isolation, so you see why people might find it so difficult. With kids especially, it can be hard to get them to engage with what they want and to

articulate it too. So it’s very important that everyone looks out for each other. I think also that kids notice their parents. They take on a slightly different attitude or something and the way kids relate to each other is wonderful, as they are just much more open.” In the book, Jack Spud’s dad made his billions from selling toilet paper, so David is in no doubt how he would have reacted to the scenes of people stockpiling huge amounts of the stuff last year. He said: “He would’ve been one of the few people that benefitted. It would’ve been him and Jeff Bezos! He would’ve been like: ‘Well, it could’ve been worse’. That whole thing was extraordinary wasn’t it? I almost forgot about it, but that was like a big gag in those days, wasn’t it? Jack would’ve definitely liked it. I always liked that story myself. His BumFresh toilet paper was actually a good invention, dry on one side and wet on the other.”

INTERVIEW

When Billionaire Boy was adapted for TV by the BBC in 2016, David took the role of Mrs Trafe the dinner lady, but although there’s no plans for him to reprise the role at the Car Park Party shows, don’t be surprised to see him pop up onstage at some point. He said: “I haven’t been asked to perform, but I definitely want to come and see it and if I do, I’ll definitely come onto the stage and say hello to everybody.” Far from resting on his laurels, David has been working relentlessly through the last year, squeezing in filming while writing more hit books, with the promise even more to come. He said: “Fortunately writing is something you can do on your own at home, so I have been able to work. Last year I brought out four different books, two or three of which were written during lockdown and I’m writing my new one at the moment. I’ve been able to be pretty busy in that department. I also got to do some filming at the end of last year, but it’s quite complex. The rules are changing all the time and it’s quite hard to do all the things I want to, but

David (right) with Joe Spud (actor Matthew Gordon)

I’ve been able to do some of them. I feel quite lucky in that respect as I have friends who are stand-up comedians or actors on the stage who haven’t been able to work at all. So, I feel lucky that I’m a writer as well, that the books are successful and people want to read them, so there’s always hunger for new ones.

So in that department I feel very lucky indeed.” Billionaire Boy is at Harewood House, Leeds on 2 May (performance times 2pm and 5pm). Tickets are priced from £49.50 (+ £2.50 booking fee) and are available at carparkparty.com.

DE IGN-DEVELOP-DELIVER If you have grand designs on building your own home, or just want to enhance the space you’ve got, pacepad offer the full package, from conception to completion.

Sir Edward Coke once said that ‘An Englishman’s home is his castle’, or words to that effect. It’s a saying that has perhaps never been more apt, as we spent much of our 2020 confined to our homes (and gardens) as a result of the ongoing pandemic. If your home is indeed your castle, you’ll want it to be the best it can be. This is where pacepad can help. When your designs extend much further than a lick of paint, new kitchen or landscaped garden, pacepad‘s two divisions - Design & Build and Construction - are perfectly placed to make your dream home a reality. Let’s start big. If you have a grand idea to build a home from the ground up pacepad can do the whole job from start to finish. They can procure the right plot of land, work with you to design and produce architectural drawings and then build the property for you. It’s all part of their ‘design-develop-deliver’ ethos. Technician Paul Hind, who has over 35 years’ experience in the industry, recently joined the Design & Build team, whilst Steve Brown heads up the construction team and is further supported by Ben Duckenfield and Henry Powell-Platts. pacepad also work with Masterfit, M&A Garretty, AMB Stainless and SC&H Electrical as well as reliable teams of subcontractors. “It’s all about creating a lifestyle,” said managing director Mark Platts. “We at pacepad have a design vision that celebrates the character in architecture. “Our nature is not just to build, it is a journey and we want you with us. When you choose to accompany our team, we have skilled design and craftsmanship that means that we can shape your architecture for you. We take what is desired by the client and apply our innovative design strategies to create optimum spaces, aiming

for vibrant, healthy and show-stopping developments.” pacepad are currently partnered with OPM building new properties at Troway (STP), where they are converting an old pub into two luxury homes and adding a further barn conversion-style property, and at Sandygate Road, where they are in negotiations for a housing scheme (STP). These will be exciting, cutting edge residential schemes. If your plans aren’t quite as grand as a complete house build, pacepad also undertake extensions and renovations as well as commercial projects. They have recently been working with Paul Brady, Axis Architecture, Cero Architecture, Stainton Planning Consultants and Hector & Cedric on various innovative and exciting projects alongside Mayfair Aluminium and their trusted subcontracting teams. “Having over three decades of experience we implement strong design strategies and specialise in premium builds and conversions across Sheffield and Derbyshire,” added Mark. “Our cool, contemporary structures are some of the most successful spaces in Sheffield. “We are able to offer the full package, from conception to completion, including architectural drawings. If you have plot of land or large garden that you think you can redevelop then we are ideal partners to develop or purchase. Feel free to drop into the office once restrictions allow!” Once your build is complete, pacepad can help you furnish it too with interior design ideas and classic furniture items from the likes of Eames, Arne Jacobsen and Ludwig Van der Rohe. If you have grand designs on building your own home, or just want to enhance the space you’ve got, pacepad are ready to design-develop-deliver for you.

PROMOTION

Looking to the future APPROACHING SIX DECADES IN BUSINESS, T.L. KILLI’S CONTINUE TO MOVE WITH THE TIMES AND REMAIN AT THE FOREFRONT OF THE CLEANING INDUSTRY. fter almost 57 years in business, there’s almost nothing that Tibor Killi doesn’t know about cleaning. They are the largest independent distributor of cleaning equipment and materials in the UK and export into every country across Europe, as well as the USA, Canada, New Zealand, Australia, China and beyond. “We have sold and provided thousands of units and services across the health, education, leisure and hospitality sectors (to name a small number), as well as to domestic users and we stock over 3,000 products, ranging from janitorial items right up to industrial ride-on sweepers,” Tibor said. Indeed, T.L. Killi’s supply hospitals, care homes and a number of hotel chains including, Hilton, Travelodge, Mercure and Marriott, to name but a few. Tibor left his native Budapest after the Hungarian Revolution in 1956, first settling in Manchester before moving to Sheffield in 1964. It was in the Steel City that he set up his own business on Glossop Road, first servicing the city’s engineering trades before expanding into domestic and commercial cleaning services and supply. At its heart, Killi’s has remained a family-led business (there’s Tibor, his wife Josephine, sons Tibor Junior and Imre, and daughter Marica) with an emphasis on exceptional standards and traditional values, and they are always looking to improve and progress. One such example is a move into robotic vacuum cleaners, which are proving extremely popular - and efficient - for a good number of their clients. Tibor favours the Italian-built Lindhaus ‘Robby’ which is an intelligent robot that sweeps, sucks and washes the floor and carpet surfaces. At only 8cm tall it passes easily under beds, furniture and sanitaryware Using hotels as an example, as many of the rooms are exact replicas, the Robby can outline a room, vacuum, store it in memory and then move onto the next one without too much fuss. It

even returns to its charger automatically when it’s finished. Much more conventional but equally loved by Tibor is the Fakir HSA-700 Cordless Battery Vacuum Cleaner, a product which he helped to develop. The dual-speed machine is incredibly light and a unique roller picks up all those loose hairs, something often missed by other conventional cleaners. Every machine at Killi’s undergoes a rigorous testing process and a free demonstration is always offered. They can also repair and service machines and due to the current pandemic, are currently collecting and re-delivering machines free of charge. “The lovely people of Sheffield have kept us in business for 56 years, it is only fair that we give something back,” added Tibor. In response to the pandemic, T.L. Killi’s has been front and centre over the last 12 months, providing everything from sanitisers and PPE to cleaning equipment and services to those who

need it. Their Zoono sanitisers, which come from New Zealand, have proved particularly effective and are alcohol-free, proven to kill 99.9% of germs and one application lasts for 24 hours. There’s no doubt T.L. Killi’s will continue to move with the times, providing cleaning supplies and services for many years to come. T.L.
