elcome to the November edition of Eastside. It’s not quite Christmas (yet) but we’re already feeling naughty and nice here at Eastside. Naughty in that we’ve been stocking up our drinks cabinet in advance of the festive season. However you celebrate this Christmas, we find that premium and small-batch spirits are all the rage – and they help to support local independent businesses too. We pick out some choice bottles and have some winter cocktail ideas too. To balance things out, we also take a look at the upturn in cycling. We talk to the experts to find out why it has proved so popular over the last few months and have some local rides for you to try, which is nice. Elsewhere there’s the ususal mix of fashion, beauty, home and garden as well as the start of our Christmas Gift Guide. See you next month for a special festive issue.

You’re in safe hands PANELWORKS LTD CAN GET YOUR CARAVAN OR MOTOR HOME REPAIRED TO ‘LIKE NEW’ AND BACK ON THE ROAD AS QUICKLY AS POSSIBLE. or obvious reasons, holidaying in the UK this summer has never been so popular, with many revelling in their ‘staycations’ and discovering areas and attractions for the first time. For caravan and motor home owners this is nothing new; long have they been able to hit the open road at the drop of a hat and head to their favourite places. But what happens if your your caravan or motor home is damaged while you’re on your travels? Your dream holiday could suddenly become a nightmare. Founded in 2008, Panelworks Ltd is an industry-approved national repair centre and is a market leader in providing specialist body shell refinishing for the caravan and motor home industry. Their unique repair systems can get your caravan or motor home repaired to ‘like new’ and back on the road as quickly as possible. The company, whose workshop is in the grounds of Yorkshire Caravans in Bawtry, was started by Jonathan Goulden and was created for manufacturers and insurers of the leisure industry, to provide an alternative method to the traditional replacement of plastic and aluminium panelling. “I’d seen so many caravans written off for what was relatively minor damage,” said Jonathan. “It was always such a waste. Either the caravan was written off or we replaced the whole panel, and then the original had to be disposed of.” From experimenting with ABS plastic, Jonathan and his team became highly proficient in repairing not only that material but also GRP and aluminium, even where there’s ribbed or stucco detailing. They’re the first port of call for many insurance companies and are a more cost effective alternative than Before replacing your

caravan or motor home. Panelworks Ltd can repair cracks in GRP, ABS and fibreglass, aluminium side panels, shower trays in site, A-frame covers, wheel spats and even do alloy wheel repairs. They work with Bailey, Coachman, Elddis, Lunar and Swift as well as many more manufacturers. Replaced panels carry an 24-month guarantee. Jonathan, who employs a specialist team of technicians and service personnel, recently invested in a state of the art Dalby Genesis Q spray booth. “We’ve invested over £50,000 in this but it’s worth every penny,” he said. “It’s the same unit as used by Jaguar Land Rover, and what it means is that, what used to take three days can now comfortably be completed in a single day, so it’s so much more efficient.” To obtain a perfect colour match, the technicians use a spectrometer. “It’s not good just getting paint from stock and hoping for a good match, as no two After caravans are the

same,” explained Jonathan. “For example, one might have been taken abroad and exposed to bright light for extended periods, which can cause fading, while the other has only been used here in the UK.” Panelworks Ltd also have a retail arm and sell locker boxes and touch up paint. Largely due to the increase in demand for caravans and motor homes this summer, Panelworks Ltd have expanded their services to include a conversion service - they can now convert vans into campervans. Getting on the road has never been easier. Panelworks Ltd Unit 1, Yorkshire Caravans, Great North Road, Bawtry, DN10 6DG Tel: 0844 800 6574 www.panelworks.co.uk

A great time to get on your bike LOCKDOWN SAW A SURGE IN CYCLISTS HITTING THE ROADS AND TRAILS. RICHARD ABBEY LOOKS AT THE GROWING ATTRACTION AND HAS SOME RIDES TO GET YOU STARTED.
hen lockdown started, daily exercise was limited to one hour a day, which for most of us, generally consisted of a short walk with those within our household close to home. As these restrictions eased from the middle of May, with an unlimited amount of exercise allowed, walks got longer and we ventured much further afield, perhaps discovering routes that we had not come across before. Cyclists had a bit more leeway and, after being limited to short, solo rides to begin with, could meet up with fellow riders for much longer excursions. It
W

almost felt like being ‘back to normal’. It is believed that cycling levels increased by up to 300 per cent during the lockdown period with a predicted 1.3 million people buying bikes. The government were quick to jump on board with a £2billion package announced to create ‘a new era for walking and cycling’. Pop-up bike lanes with protected space for cycling, wider pavements, safer junctions, and cycle and bus-only corridors were created in towns and cities throughout the country supported by the existing Cycle to Work scheme
and new £50 cycle repair vouchers. Has there been a better time to get on a bike? Martin Maltby, who runs Doncaster’s Don Valley Cycles, goes some way to explaining why cycling has proved so popular. “Many people took advantage of the great spring and summer weather we had and took to cycling. A lot of the roads were very quiet also making it a very pleasant time to ride, even for the novice cyclist. “We were very busy during that period until the stock of new bikes became a big problem. Even now we
011 ESide Nov20 15/10/2020 12:38 Page 1
CYCLING
“Boris had made it clear that cycling was OK, traffic was practically nonexistent and the weather was perfect. Plus, we are so lucky to have the Peak District on our doorstep.”
don’t have any new bikes coming through from our suppliers so we are keeping ticking over doing repairs and servicing.” Cycling has not only been convenient over the last few months but it has enormous health benefits too, as Martin says: “It’s low impact, it causes less strain and injuries than most other forms of exercise, and cycling uses all of the major muscle groups as you pedal. “It’s easy - unlike some other sports, cycling does not require high levels of physical skill. Most people know how to ride a bike and, once you learn, you don’t forget. It’s also good for strength and stamina and it can be as intense as you want, cycling can be done at very low intensity to begin with, if recovering from injury or illness, but can be built up to a demanding physical workout.” “The main thing is as well,” adds Martin, “is that cycling is a fun way to get fit. The adventure and buzz you get from coasting down hills and being outdoors means you are more likely to continue to cycle regularly, compared to other physical activities that keep you indoors or require special times or places.” These are sentiments echoed by mobile bike mechanic Barry Parker. “Cycling is a great way of getting fit and losing weight,” he said. “It has great cardio abilities and can be enjoyed with hardly any money spent. It’s very social with mountain bike and road clubs all over the UK for all abilities and great for commuting to work at a low cost. It’s also good for mental health.” While regular riders have been taking advantage of the quieter roads, for novices it can be hard to know where to start. What kind of bike do you need? Where should you be riding? They’re all valid questions perhaps best left to those in the know, whether that’s someone you already know or one of the many cycling shops in the city. “It really depends on a lot of factors how old are you, what sort of cycling do you want to do, and so on. There’s a bike for every type of journey as well as some that will go pretty much anywhere,” says cycling blogger Simon Geller, to those who are thinking about getting a bike. “For city cycling I‘d recommend a hybrid with an upright riding position so you can keep a good eye on what’s going on around you. A low-gear option will get you around in most towns and cities but if you find the hills too daunting you
should consider an electric bike. “For long-distance trips you can’t beat the classic tourer, whereas if you want to burn around the countryside a road bike will suit you - don’t take them on trails though, there’s a clue in the name. and that’s what mountain bikes are for.” Mountain bikes and hybrid bikes have proved particularly popular at Don Valley Cycles but you’ll have to think beyond the bike too, with safety and security accessories required too. “Some safety accessories are a good idea - bright clothing, lights, and you should consider wearing a helmet, although you don’t have to and they don’t make you invulnerable. Plus a good lock - spend at least ten per cent of the value of the bike. You can get third party insurance by joining one of the cycling organisations like Cycling UK.” Barry Parker’s business saw a big upturn during the lockdown period, with many people looking for help with new bikes are maintenance for ones that had probably been sat in the garage for months on end. “There was a big uptake in cycling due to gyms and swimming baths being closed and the government saying avoid public transport,” he said. “Since Covid restrictions hit the UK my business went up about 60 per cent and I had a big volume of new customers. The bikes were mainly ones that had been bought online as bike shops had completely sold out of low to mid-level bikes so bought from online retailers and gave them to me in boxes to build.” The good thing about cycling is that it is very easy to take up - get a bike and you’re good to go, but there is one thing to bear in mind, particularly if you’re commuting or riding on the roads for the first time. As Barry explains: “Read the cycle part of the Highway Code so you know the law and where you stand.” That’s sage advice for motorists too. If you’re thinking about hitting the roads - or the trails - here are a few rides in and around Doncaster to get you started. Eastside | www.eastsidemag.co.uk 11

CYCLING
RIDE2:1: Ride Doncaster & Rotherham to Sheffield city centre The route described here is the shortest known viable route between Sheffield and Doncaster along the Don Valley. It is possible to get from Sheffield to Doncaster on the Trans-Pennine Trail, but it is a longer way round via the Dearne Valley. 1. From Doncaster Station as you leave turn right and take St Sepulchre Gate West to Cleveland Street at which point you should dismount and walk along until you reach Roberts Road, on the other side of the railway bridge. Turn left onto Littlemoor Lane, and you are on a signed cycle route which you follow straight until you reach your first route choice at Balby – to take to the Trans-Pennine Trail (TPT) or continue by road. The TPT is an interesting scenic ride. 2. If you choose the TPT route, take the signposted right turn and follow the track along the side of a playing field, and then take the rough track (with care!) down to the River Don which you cross on a converted railway bridge and continue straight for about another half mile, before doubling back to the right and down to the river. The TPT was resurfaced in early 2017 and now has tarmac from Sprotborough through to Pastures Road. Take the trail to the former Earth Centre at Conisbrough, now a children’s outdoor centre, and go down the off-
12 Eastside | www.eastsidemag.co.uk
ramp to the left. Cross the river via the Don Bridge entrance and, leaving the car park, turn right onto the A6023 for a short time. (If you need a tea break, go left on the A6023 instead and follow the signs to Conisbrough Castle. There is a cafe at the old castle lodge.) Just before the level crossing at Denaby Main turn left and follow this minor road through Old Denaby to the B6090, turn left then first right to the A630 (T), turn right and proceed with care towards Thrybergh. 3. If you are stuck for time at Balby, continue on the road towards Warmsworth. You will emerge from Tenter Lane and turn left onto Mill Lane, reaching the A630 (T) shortly thereafter. Turn right here and you are heading for Rotherham. 4. There is now an alternative route using the viaduct at Conisbrough: Continue along Mill Lane and then right onto Erdington Lane. Take Warmsworth Halt on the right – the trail commences at the end. Once over the viaduct, turn left to continue on the TPT towards Conisbrough. 5. The A630 is mostly not too bad for a trunk road apart from a short section at Thrybergh which is 60mph. If you feel intimidated by fast traffic take to the pavement – there’s unlikely to be anyone about. 6. A chance for a cup of tea and a sticky bun here, Thrybergh Country park has a cafe popular with cyclists. This is on the A630(T) opposite the junction with Carr Lane, where our TPT option rejoins the road route. 7. To continue towards Sheffield on the National Cycle Network, cross the roundabout with care and continue on the dual carriageway towards Rotherham. About one mile from the roundabout turn right onto Shakespeare Road, then left onto Eldon Road, look out for a path past a playground on the right which will take you to a bridge firstly over the River Don, then another over the South Yorkshire Navigation over which you will have to carry your bike. Once over continue towards and through Rotherham to Tinsley viaduct (you can’t miss it.) We suggest this route because there is no right of way along the canal to Aldwarke Lane (A6123) although it is possible to take this option. 8. From Tinsley you can use the Sheffield Canal towpath all the way into the city. The canal towpath is narrow in places, unlit, rough in places and muddy in all but the driest weather. Follow the towpath for 1.2 miles from Tinsley viaduct, where you will be directed to cross to the opposite bank by the Sheffield Arena and onto the road. Turn left and head back along the road away from Sheffield for 50 yards, then left again down a short little track to regain the towpath. This little loop will avoid using the steps to get back to the canal. From here the track deteriorates and there are a couple of squeezes under narrow bridges between Attercliffe and Victoria Wharf. 3.2 miles after leaving Tinsley you will pass under the Cadman Street bridge, and then the railway viaduct. Under the viaduct, follow the signs through a small doorway in the wall onto Blast Lane. The towpath beyond this point is part of the Victoria quays development. Turn right on Blast Lane and follow the red tarmac cycle path towards Park Square roundabout and the city centre. Follow Sustrans NCN6/627 signs from here.

hristmas is not cancelled – yet. The ongoing pandemic has created a constantly shifting landscape and let’s be honest, we don’t really know whether we’re coming or going. With the ‘Rule of Six’, 10pm curfews, social distancing and restrictions on the number of households meeting (at the time of writing), this year’s festive celebrations are going to be very different. Chances are they’ll be no big office party; these are likely to be much smaller affairs or may not even happen at all. Getting together with friends and family is going to be limiting too with the new rules and we still don’t know if we’ll all be able to sit round the dinner table for turkey and all the trimmings. But don’t let it get you down. This year’s celebrations might have to be built on shifting sands but that doesn’t mean they have to be cancelled altogether, you might just have to get a bit more creative. Multiple, smaller gatherings at home spread over the festive season might be the way forward, for example. If this is the case, and you’re planning on inviting friends and family round for dinner or drinks, you’ll need a well-stocked drinks cabinet – wines, beers and plenty of choice when it comes to spirits. Gordons, Bacardi, Bells and a bottle of Smirnoff Red just won’t cut it if you want to impress. Premium and small-batch spirits have become increasingly popular over recent years with sales predictably increasing in the run up to Christmas. With that in mind, we take a look at four of the staples that every drinks cabinet should contain – whisky, gin, vodka and rum – what you should be looking to buy and what to do with them, including some great cocktail ideas. Alison and Adrian Murray are custodians of The Wee Dram in Bakewell, Derbyshire and have been providing expert advice on all aspects of whisky for over 22 years. “Our concept is very simple, to provide customers with a great range of whiskies from all around the world, such as Kentucky Bourbon, Canadian Rye, Irish, English, Welsh, Swedish, Blended Scotch and of course Single Malt Scotch Whisky to name but a few,” Adrian said. “American whiskey, particularly craft distilling, has had a resurgence over the past decade and we now have, alongside more traditional Kentucky bourbon, whisky from Seattle, rye whiskey from Brooklyn and Texan whiskey. “However, our biggest selling category of whisky is by far Single Malt Scotch. We tend to sell more from the lesser known distilleries, as many customers are looking for something a little bit different. Our best-selling whiskies tend to be big, full flavoured expressions, such as very peaty smoky whiskies, from the Isle of Islay in the Hebrides, as well as rich, sherry cask matured styles from the Highlands.” Is there a particular bottle Alison and Adrian can recommend for this festive season? “Tomatin 14 years old Port Wood Finish,” said Adrian. “This is a great age for whisky in general, however this particular bottling has benefitted from spending a couple of years in ex-tawny port casks. “Tomatin Distillery, situated just south of Inverness, high in the mountains, makes a lighter spirit than you would expect
C
given its location, however this whisky is excellent for extracting flavours from the wood. The complex flavour incorporating the rich port tones has a real ‘Christmassy feel’.” Leeds-based Tailors Gin have an interesting story - they’re mens clothing makers by trade but have branched out into small-batch gin production and have a unique store in the Grand Arcade. By day it’s a men’s tailors, by night it’s a 1920s speakeasy where the star of the show is their very own gin. Owner Jamila Juma-Ware has also seen a big shift towards quality in recent months. “There has definitely been a change in people’s buying habits,” she said. “People are really keen to shop local, and support independent businesses, particularly at the moment. “I think people are really seeing the true value in buying artisan, small batch gins. The craft, and attention to detail in each small batch creation, really pays off in terms of the recipe production and the overall taste, and there is a bigger call for understanding how the gin is made, where, why and who by - the story behind each gin, adds to the overall experience. “There is also a lot of attention into savouring the moments - probably because drinking is typically such a social event, it’s becoming a real ‘special occasion’, so more thought and effort goes into the whole event - from a late afternoon G&T at home, right through to drinks with your social bubble in a bar, people are looking for the wow factor.” Phyll Clark runs The Tasting Note in Bawtry and stocks a

full range of spirits and has seen a change in buying trends since the start of the pandemic. “People are staying at home more and we have found people buying quality rather than quantity,” she said. Gin remains hugely popular and Phyll has seen a thirst for Yorkshire gins with one in particular proving really popular. “Everyone likes a good G&T and our customers love to purchase local gins. One of our latest additions is one from J.P. Adlam which is handcrafted in Yorkshire,” added Phyll. “It pairs really well with a Mediterranean Tonic with lashings of ice and lime and orange slices, Elderflower Tonic with ice and raspberries, or Indian Tonic over ice with a lemon/lime garnish.” J.P. Adlam gin is produced by Doncaster-based Lujo Distilling Company, which was formed a little over three years ago with the sole purpose to produce premium quality small batch spirits. “We have seen success all over the world for the quality of our gin,“ said Jason Adlam. “We even featured in a BBC documentary. The distillery produces a premium London Dry Gin as well as two fruit flavours with a newly launched rum and vodka following suit to complete the family. “Each run is batched in numbers around 100 bottles and hand-bottled, labelled and wax sealed for that truly unique experience.” Despite recent events, Lujo has seen a significant increase in sales as people start to appreciate local produce. Whilst available from local quality independent retailers throughout Yorkshire, you can also buy directly from the distillery. “For us, the small batch craft culture and meaning automatically provides a brand with a point of difference and

“Locality and provenance really do make a difference when people are selecting which bottle to buy online or in shops.” – Thomas Hay-Owens, True North Brew Co
tells a story; a story that speaks more of the passion and curiosity to produce truly beautiful spirits as it does the need to simply sell alcohol,” continued Jason. Another small-batch spirit with a story is Sheffield Vodka, which is produced by True North Brew Co. The Sheffieldbased company are perhaps best known for their chain of pubs and bars throughout South Yorkshire but they also have their own city centre brewery and distillery producing fine ales, dry gin and now, vodka. Company spirit and cocktail expert Thomas Hay-Owens told us about what makes their vodka unique: “Vodka is categorised as an odourless, flavourless spirit. We’ve embraced the traditional process behind vodka, utilising a copper pot still for the distillation due to the fact it can help takeaway the bitter, ‘after burn’ quality of a lot of vodkas. “However, it’s our approach of stepping away from the norm that sets our vodka apart. We distill our British grain spirit base with cracked black pepper, to emulate the subtly spiced, punchy finish of a rye blended vodka. We then also add fresh lemon zest and a touch of honey from The Sheffield Honey company to round out the earthy tones produced by the pepper and to add further smoothness and complexity to the finished article. “The spirit market sometimes runs the risk of being oversaturated, so locality and provenance really do make a difference when people are selecting which bottle to buy online or in shops. Finding that niche that sets the product apart, be it the production method, the ingredients or simply the story behind the spirit is becoming more and more important to the customer. This is absolutely the case when it comes to Sheffield Vodka.” Rum has been one of the stand-out spirits of the year. Last year, almost 35 million bottles were sold, worth a little more than £1billion, according to the Wine and Spirit Trade Association. In fact, one leading newspaper has recently said that rum now ranks alongside gin and whisky among the nation’s favourite spirits. There’s no-one better placed to tell you why the liquor, made by fermenting then distilling sugarcane molasses or sugarcane juice, has become so popular than Adrian Bagnoli, proprietor of Sheffield city centre bar, Cubana. Adrian is a real aficionado when it comes to rum and has searched the world to compile a rum menu offering over 250 varieties. Competing against hundreds of bars and restaurants across the UK, Cubana won the Best Rum Menu 2016 category at the tenth Golden Rum Barrel Awards in London. “Of course we’ve plenty of rums from all around Cuba and Latin America but our vast range extends from as close as Sheffield to as far as India and literally all over the world, all hand-picked for their individual characteristics and historical value,” said Adrian. “If you fancy something incredibly special you could choose from our Rare and Limited section – most of these

Many pair beautifully with our freshly prepared tapas dishes such as the JM Blanc from Martinique together with fish/seafood; any of our dark/aged rums – ideal alongside meat; our characteristically fresh Japanese rums with vegetarian/vegan dishes or maybe try the Foursquare range from Barbados, as the perfect after dinner drink.” There’s one particular bottle that is particularly exclusive, although you’ll need deep pockets to give it a try. The Havana Club 1519, whose ageing process started in the early 1940s, was recently launched in honour of the 500-year-old history of Havana. Only 500 bottles exist in the world with only 250 of these available for sale. Collectors from around the globe are now queuing up to buy them at nearly £3,000 a bottle. Adrian said: “The fact we were allowed to buy the very first two bottles to leave Cuba goes to show how far our status has grown in the rum world in recent years. It was an honour to be have been offered the opportunity to purchase this top quality rare rum at Havana Club HQ and, although not many people will be buying rum at such a hefty pricetag, it ensures we continue to develop our position as one of the country’s leading centres for rum.” It’s yours to try for the princely sum of £250 a shot. Whatever your tipple – whisky, gin, vodka or rum – you’re spoilt for choice this Christmas. Just avoid the supermarket shelves and choose something that little different, something with a story behind. You’re to impress your guests (if you’re allowed them). Cheers!

Beaming into schools Yorkshire Wildlife Park has launched a new version of its award-winning education programmes for schools both online and on park visits as part of a reassessment of providing world class education in a Covid safe environment. The amazing wildlife of Yorkshire Wildlife Park will be beaming into schools as part of new education initiative this autumn alongside covid-safe visits. Virtual visits to the award-winning park, including live Q&A sessions from Project Polar are being offered to schools to inspire studies and animal conservation. The virtual visits connect schools with the Wildlife Discovery Classrooms at the park where sessions with live animals will be broadcast along with opportunities to talk to the education team live from the ten-acre Project Polar, home to three polar bears. They were launched after a comprehensive review into how to support schools with new and revised programmes in light of the pandemic and ongoing restrictions. The park has a ‘Good to Go’ rating from Visit Britain as well as a COVID-19 safety certification and strict measures are being observed across social distancing and cleaning protocols. The park’s education team is available to offer further advice and discuss your education sessions. Please contact schoolvisits@yorkshirewildlifepark.com or 01302 535057.

EATING OUT
Exacting standards WITH A CHAIN OF RESTAURANTS ACROSS YORKSHIRE, AAGRAH IS FAMILIAR TO MANY. BUT WHAT MAKES IT SO SPECIAL? fter a busy day working and driving between appointments, the only thing that kept us going was the promise of a Monday night curry. An Aagrah curry in Woodlands on Great North Road to be exact, ten minutes from the centre of Doncaster. Now, there are a few Aagrah restaurants scattered across North and South Yorkshire, all with the same exacting high standards, and have been the recipient of countless awards since its incarnation in 1977. Our restaurant of choice, Woodlands, was owed to the fact we had eaten there before. Liaqat Ali, director and executive chef, is part of the Aagrah family; he started his journey by training at the Aagrah School in Bradford and in 1986 ran the Pudsey restaurant, taking over Great
A
North Road in 1995. Liaqat won a Lifetime Achievement Award in 2019, along with his son Asif, who himself is an accomplished chef, and their super team. They have always made us, and all their customers, welcome from the minute you walk through the door. They appeared to know each diner by name, everyone working hard to make you feel like it’s your first dining experience in their particular restaurant. We were there for 7pm on the dot, and were starved! The restaurant was, however, already very full, another testimony to the restaurant’s fantastic reputation. Liaqat spotted us and guided us through the sanitising booth, which is an experience in itself. For the uninitiated, it’s a booth with a mist of sanitising dry spray that allows you into

the restaurant suitably cleansed. The powerful fusion of aromas hit us like a, well, like a direct train to Kashmir! Whack, straight to the senses. For sheer ease and speed, (I told you we were hungry) we ordered the Aagrah Seafood Special for two to share whilst we studied the vast menu. It arrived quickly and was the right choice for two hungry travellers – Jhinga Tikka, Machli Masala, Balochi Machli (monkfish) and Machli Kebab (gorgeous and spicy hot), Who could complain about that at £11.50? All the fish was chunky with warm spicy flavours. Working our way through the above
settled us in to what we ordered next. After a little break, we ventured on to our mains – Shahi Chops Tandoori (£10.95), beautiful lamb chops marinated in selected spices, cooked to perfection in bay leaf juices with tomatoes, onions, green chillies, garlic, julienne cut ginger, fresh coriander and peppers, served on a sizzler plate with Hyderabadi sauce. It was absolute heaven for me as lamb chops are my go-to starter. Having them as a main ensured I didn’t miss out, I wasn’t disappointed as the sizzler plate was stacked full of lamb. It was now Neil’s turn of choice and I was surprised that, he of the milder-the-
better curry type of person, opted for the very warm Chicken Balti Chilli (£9.95). Unsurprisingly, I heard him whisper, “one chill strength please”. However, it still managed to retain the depth of the flavours as it was both hot AND spicy. I didn’t hear a murmur from him for what seemed a couple of minutes and I couldn’t work out if he was savouring the moment or the heat was getting the better of him. Apparently it was a mixture of both, he told me, when he managed to get his brain and tastebuds used to the heat. He certainly wasn’t complaining. The desserts, if you are still in need, are the usual Indian fare, ice-creams galore, all beautifully presented and as creamy as you would expect from this five-star restaurant. The only choice left to make now was who was going to drive back down the M1. Aagrah Doncaster Great North Road, Woodlands, DN6 7RA Tel: 1302 728888 www.aagrahfoods.com

The show must go on THERE’S NO ENTERTAINMENT BUT DOES CHINA ROSE STILL HAVE THE X-FACTOR, WRITES RICHARD ABBEY? hina Rose in Bawtry is a real destination restaurant, famed for its extravagant events and Showtime live music evenings. Sadly, these events have had to be put on hold but the restaurant remains as popular as ever. We arrived at the South Parade restaurant, which has been open for 30 years and is owned by the Wan family, on a Tuesday night to a full car park and an already bustling restaurant. China Rose is now open six days a week – it’s closed Mondays – and offers a takeaway service to complement its already impressive restaurant menu. Temperatures taken, hands santised and checked in, we were shown to our table, adhering to the new one-way system. China Rose is a big restaurant which works in its favour during these disruptive times; tables can be comfortably socially distanced and the different areas, on different level, all help to keep it Covid-compliant. We didn’t think it felt any worse for it, in fact, it didn’t feel any different to a visit to a ‘normal’ restaurant for want of a better word. There were couples, families and groups all enjoying themselves, which added to warm conviviality (this was before further restrictions came into place). Restaurant manager Carly Hui was our amiable host for the evening and after taking our drinks order – draught Tiger beer for me (£5.50) and an Il Caggio pinot grigio (£7) for my wife – talked us through the extensive Cantonese menu. Being unfussy types, my wife and I

were happy for Carly to guide us through the different dishes and she recommended we try one of their set menus – with a few twists. We loosely had their special banquet (£30 per person) with a few changes here and there. We started with the house special hors d’ouevres which arrived on a huge plate and consisted of pancake rolls, squid meniere, paper-wrapped chicken and crispy seaweed. Carly also brought us some minced pork with lettuce (£6 per person) to try. Where to start? The pancake rolls were lovely and crisp and the seaweed was exactly as you’d expect it to be. The battered squid was served in a moreish sweet and sticky sauce (with a hint of chilli) which the chicken was incredibly moist and had a salty tang, thanks to the paper wrapping. I really liked the minced pork and lettuce, which I found quite refreshing. Moving on and we thought we’d be straight onto the main courses but Carly insisted we tried their crispy aromatic duck first, promising that we could take home whatever we didn’t finish. How could we refuse? In a touch of theatre, the half duck arrived at our table and was expertly deboned and shredded in front us. It was served with pancakes, cucumber, spring onion and hoi sin sauce and had that lovely combination of crispy yet moist meat and the sweet and slightly bitter sauce. Perfect. How we managed three pancakes each I’ll never know. After a short (much-needed) break, we moved onto main courses. Fillet steak in
black bean sauce arrived on sizzling skillet and was perhaps the dish of the night; incredibly tender beef was well matched by the moreish sauce and given an extra kick by sliced red chillies. Battered sweet and sour chicken was subtle rather than overpowering and we really loved the plate of simply cooked pak choi. These dishes were served with a portion of egg fried rice and noodles with beansprouts and onion. Unsurprisingly there was too much to finish but we went home happy with a doggy bag in hand. A serving of Chinese tea (£1 per person), which Carly told us was “good for digestion”, brought a fitting end to a delicious meal. Hats off to head chef Jason Kwan – he left us suitably impressed – and also Carly and her team for wonderful service throughout the evening. Fingers crossed that China Rose’s famed events can return sooner rather than later and add another dimension to this already popular restaurant. “I’m Chintana, most people know me as Ton. I grew up in a village not far from the city of Ratchuburi in Thailand. I started cooking at a young age and used to cook for all my family. Mai Dang was my first restaurant I opened when I was 18 years old. Six Years later, I met my husband and we decided to start a family in Doncaster. Then this gave me the opportunity to open the first Thai Restaurant in Doncaster, The Bangkok Thai Restaurant. Ten years of running a successful business, we wanted to expand and we decided to open the Bangkok Royal Elephant. Now we’re starting a new chapter by opening the only Thai Restaurant in Doncaster, Thai At The Sal.”

Home comforts A TRIP TO THE SHIP IS GUARANTEED TO PUT A SMILE ON YOUR FACE, WRITES RICHARD ABBEY. hat constitutes a great pie? It comes down to personal preference of course but for me it’s about the content, crust and how it is served. One of the best pies I’ve ever had was at a pub in York some years ago. It was a no frills kind of place but the game pie was absolutely spot on, a hugh portion served from a tray packed with meat and served with chunky chips and mushy peas. Trust me, if you like pies, this was pie heaven. I’m immediately disappointed if a pie comes in an individual dish with a puff pastry topping. For me, the pastry needs to envelop the whole thing or, as in York, be served as an individual portion from a large tray. Thankfully, The Ship at Bawtry, clearly know what they’re doing. Their homemade ‘pie of the day’ - on this occasion steak, leek and horseradish was a triumph, and a bargain too at £10.95. Filling and flavoursome, the large serving consisted of melt-in-themouth steak topped by a gorgeous shortcrust-suet pastry crust as well as fantastic chips and a side of vegetables. It was a proper pie and all the better for it - delicious. The Ship at Bawtry is a huge place at the top of Gainsborough Road and has garnered quite the foodie reputation under the stewardship of Chris Wallis. The menu is displayed on huge blackboards, is divided into grills, pub classics, starters, specials and fish, featuring everything from tempura prawns and flat iron steak to fish and

chips and lasagne. Many of the dishes are labelled as homemade and you can tell the pie was the perfect example. The pub is completely Covidcompliant and safe; our temperatures were checked on entry and - a first for me - we were given a little gizmo, for want of a better word, that allowed us to order, pay or call our server from our table. Masks had to be worn unless you were seated at your table. My companion and I started with a drink from the bar - Guinness for me, Moretti for him - before ordering from the blackboard. I opted for a traditional prawn cocktail (£6.95) which was everything you would want it to be juicy prawns, crisp salad, Marie Rose sauce (homemade, of course) and brown bread and butter on the side. Across the table, my dining partner tucked into huge chunks of award-winning Derbyshire black pudding wrapped in smoked bacon (£5.95), which was served with a homemade lemon and lime marmalade. The latter provided real zing to an otherwise earthy dish. I couldn’t look beyond my pie for main course but my companion enthused over his pan-fried venison haunch (£14.95), which was served with homemade red wine and onion gravy and The Ship’s ‘potato of the day’, garliccrushed new potatoes. It was a tasty piece of meat, well cooked with a real garlicky kick from the potatoes. The red onions added a touch of sweetness. There’s a decent dessert menu at The Ship, which included sweet treats such as
black cherry and chocolate ganache, triple-layered fudge cake, lemon posset and baked American vanilla cheesecake, but we bypassed these and went straight for the ‘homemade’ section. Spoilt for choice, we plumped for bread and butter pudding (£5.45) and peach and black cherry crumble (£5.45), which are served with a choice of ice cream, custard or pouring cream. Custard was the clear winner. ‘Comfort’ is the word the comes to mind after a trip to The Ship. You’ll get a warm welcome, the surroundings are comfortable and the food, on this evidence, was homely and hearty, everything you would want from a local pub. They’ve adapted well to the current situation, it feels completely safe and well organised, and there’s the added benefit of a sizeable beer garden and a takeaway wagon which operates on weekends, so if you don’t feel comfortable sitting in a pub, you can take your favourite food home with you instead. We set high expectations so that every student is stretched and acquires the attributes that employer’s value. This helps students to realise their potential. “The careers team work closely with a number of higher education institutions, apprenticeship providers, employers and with the armed forces to ensure that students have the most up-to-date information and knowledge of career opportunities. “Lessons are delivered at an ageappropriate level to ensure our students understanding and growth of knowledge as they progress through their career journey. We encourage students to be aspirational in their goals and provide the help and guidance they need to give them the best chance of success. “During Key Stage 2, we introduce students to different career possibilities and begin to explore with them what it means to have a career. “At Key Stage 3 we inspire students to take their first steps towards their future

career planning. The focus moves from understanding their own skills, qualities and values, to linking these with GCSE decisions and possible careers. “In Years 10 and 11, the QE Futures programme is aimed at reinforcing students’ previous learning and building on their experiences to help them move forward with their career planning. In addition, all students are offered one-toone careers interviews to personalise
their experience and help develop individual action plans. “In Years 12 and 13, as students begin their final years in general education, we offer support to prepare them for their Post-18 decision making. Whether students are looking to apply to their chosen university, or looking at alternative routes into employment, one to one guidance is tailored to their individual needs.” To find out more about QE’s approach to education as we support our students to achieve their aspirations; through the quality of teaching delivered, extensive extra-curricular opportunities offered, and strong pastoral care provided, visit: www.qe.org.
