What could be BETTER?

Property owner, Mr Rod Turner, shares his experiences at Audley Scarcroft Park.

Set within 110 acres of beautiful land, and close to Leeds, Audley Scarcroft Park is now open and offers luxury properties in and around the restored Grade II listed building.

Open to the public, Thackaray’s restaurant offers dining in exquisite surroundings, whilst the Audley Club provides luxurious health and leisure facilities.

“Retirement villages are the future for more and more of us.”

Mr Rod

“Increasingly in middle age you hear stories about aging parents refusing to move out of their over-large houses or just as often pretending to their worried children that suggested moves are not quite right. This puts an increasing burden on all concerned. I well remember the hours of worry suffered

by my late wife along with frequent 150-mile drives because my mother-in-law refused to move out of her very unsuitable house.

Then one day the realisation dawns that you are the one living in an over-large house, almost certainly needing more and more maintenance with all the hassle and cost those entail. You are the one making the excuses that I am OK, and I just cannot

denial about reducing capabilities and turn away from the truth that the changes can be slowed up but not reversed. Fortunately, I knew about Audley Villages and Audley Care with their stellar reputations for quality. So, when I saw a ‘site acquired by Audley’ sign just a few miles from two of my daughters, my decision was made.

I moved into a cottage at Audley Scarcroft Park in December 2023 with high expectations which in every case have been exceeded. The cottage is superb, very easy to look after (particularly with the aid of a cleaner provided by Audley Care) and after very few days felt completely at home.

The staff could not have been more

helpful and friendly. I had delayed a replacement hip operation until after my move thinking correctly that it was the right place to be, with emergency buttons to press and staff always available to deal with any emergency. What I didn’t expect were the volunteers to help with dog walking and stages of recovery.

Equally friendly have been my fellow residents with regular opportunities to socialise. But of course, if a little bit of solitude is needed, then having your own cottage or apartment provides this.

I am convinced that retirement villages are the future for more and more of us. They enable independence with a backstop for the inevitable problems. They provide the opportunity to socialise easily with people with common shared memories. What could be better for later life?”

Life after ROMEO

As & Juliet arrives in Leeds, the lead actors speak about the modern Shakespeare classic. By Rosie Brennan.

Lara Denning & Matt Cardle in rehearsals for & Juliet UK & Ireland Tour.

fter thrilling audiences in London’s West End and on Broadway, the Olivier and WhatsOnStage Award-winning and Tony Award-nominated musical & Juliet comes to Leeds Grand Theatre from 18-30 November.

Starring X Factor winner Matt Cardle as Shakespeare, Gerardine Sacdalan (Made in Dagenham In Concert) as Juliet and Lara Denning (Miss Honey in Matilda, Miss Hedge in Everybody’s Talking About Jamie) as Shakespeare’s wife Anne Hathway, the all-singing, all-dancing phenomenon takes audiences on a fabulous journey as Juliet ditches her famous ending for a fresh beginning and a second chance at life and love – her way.

The play is directed by the renowned Luke Sheppard, and comes from the mind of Emmy-winning writer David West Read (Schitt’s Creek), and has won three Oliver Awards and six WhatsOnStage Awards since its creation in Manchester in 2019.

Embarking on the 2024 UK and Ireland tour, leads Matt Cardle and Lara Denning discuss taking on the iconic roles of realplays, their professional relationship and more.

The pair explain that & Juliet brings something entirely different to the table: “It’s not the Romeo and Juliet that we all know,” says Lara.

Matt also says: “It turns Romeo and Juliet inside out and completely on its head. You wouldn’t normally dare do that kind of thing to Shakespeare but they’ve got the story so right. It makes for a completely different, completely unexpected show. I don’t think anyone who hasn’t seen it already will expect anything like this. It’s just complete joy.”

Both actors were hooked to & Juliet, enjoying the modernised message behind it.

“I’d heard so many amazing things about it, then I read it and was blown about by how brilliant, clever and funny it was. And getting to play someone as iconic as William Shakespeare was something I just couldn’t say no to,” explains Matt.

Having worked with director Luke Sheppard before and admiring his work, Lara also jumped at the opportunity, adding “I loved how the story has been

really cool piece of theatre and it’s a really cool musical.”

Anne and William are writing the play together as it goes along, and the audience can see the characters in the play through both of their eyes.

The dynamic between the two married characters makes for a fascinating watch, as the actress says: “Anne wants Juliet to live on and so with some coercing the ending gets changed and then we see what would happen to Juliet if she got on with her life without Romeo,” contrasting to the character of Shakespeare, who, in the words of actor Matt Cardle, “is still on a sort of misogynistic tip - not that he doesn’t believe in the same things but because he’s still stuck in that era in his mind. He’s very much a man of his time.”

The show really highlights the comedy and irony Shakespeare himself has always been known for. Matt says: “I would describe Shakespeare per cent as in-control as he thinks he is. He really enjoys the challenge Anne presents to him but he’s always desperate to regain control.”

The actor thoroughly enjoys portraying the historical playwright, particularly as he crosses the fourth wall and gets to interact with the audience quite a bit.

Contrastingly, Anne is a woman who’s been living in the country looking after the kids and now she has the chance to see how Shakespeare writes his plays. She’s working with him, she has some input and she is over the moon. She gets this opportunity to write with him and explore an independent side of herself that she’s kept suppressed for quite a long time. She’s a strong, independent, funny, warm, kind and loving wife, and a really fun person to be around.

The on-stage couple speak about one another with the utmost respect and admiration.

“Lara is absolutely amazing and I feel incredibly lucky to be playing opposite

her. She can make me laugh with just one look, so it’s going to be interesting going forward to see if I can keep a straight face. Her voice is incredible and her acting is phenomenal, so I really have to bring my A-game,” says the Shakespeare actor.

His on-stage wife adds: “Working with Matt is an absolute dream. We’ve got the same giddy energy, so it’s lovely. As soon as we met, we instantly knew that we were going to work really, really well together. His instincts are brilliant. I’ve had lots of ‘show husbands’ and he’s a favourite already.”

On top of renowned writers, producers and choreographers, & Juliet also features music from pop’s number one hitmaker Max Martin, the record producer and songwriter behind ‘Baby One More Time’, ‘I Want It That Way’, ‘Can’t Stop The Feeling!’, ‘Since U Been Gone’, Katy Perry’s ‘Roar’ and many more. These iconic pop anthems feature throughout the show, allowing Juliet’s new story to burst to life.

Stretching his musical talent to the theatre, the former X Factor winner says he thoroughly enjoys the pressures that come with the performance: “When I’m on tour with my band, if we mess something up, it doesn’t really matter; it just makes the whole evening a bit more human and it’s only myself I have to answer to,” says Matt. “But with theatre shows, it’s such a huge team and you don’t want to let anyone down. And I love how it feels like being part of a family. It’s the most lovely thing to get to spend so much time with all these lovely people.”

Lara is no stranger to life on the road either. “Being on tour is a joy. I went on the road with Everybody’s Talking About Jamie a couple of years ago and the audiences regionally are just superb. When you go to regional theatres, they’re full of local people who love their theatres and go there to experience things together,” she says.

If you’re anything like me then the arrival of crisp cold days and cosy nights means indulging in comfort food, self-care, a new wardrobe and sprucing up my home décor.

One of my favourite places to relax with a cocktail or swing by for a working lunch is the Dakota Hotel. To say I’ve been there as often as I have, it’s a travesty I’ve never actually stayed overnight so the recent launch of the hotel’s new suites we’re the perfect excuse to enjoy a staycation.

I stayed in one of the plush new garden room suites, which has a large terrace overlooking Greek Street. It was spacious, super luxe and a little bit boujee (just the way I like it)! We also sampled the Sunday roast, which was delicious. I went for the salmon mousse to start, followed by the honey roast gammon, which was delicious and I obviously squeezed in a sticky toffee

The service was superb too.

But it must be said, the breakfast buffet is always my favourite thing when staying in a hotel and Dakota didn’t disappoint on this front either. If you’re looking for a special weekend away or a fancy date night, it’s the perfect place to visit this autumn.

Talking of Sunday dinner, did you know The Ivy has launched a Sunday lunch menu? I’ve always thought it would be a

Following the recent news that The Woods in Chapel Allerton has been taken over by the Roland’s team it was also announced that it would be bringing the famous Kerbside burgers to North Leeds. I love a good burger so obviously I had to try it out. I opted for the Chilli Crisp burger, which is a smash patty with American cheese, miso butter onions, crispy fried egg parm fries, which we’re next level tasty. I also couldn’t resist some mac and cheese and it’s fair to say I rolled all the way home.

After all that indulgence, I was in desperate need of a workout, which was perfect timing for the launch of Yoga Kulas new Yin studio. I’ve signed up for a course to make sure it wasn’t just my waistline that was stretching in the colder months. The studio has the largest class timetable of an independent studio in the UK and offers something for everyone.

The next few weeks are all about Christmas events and party planning, we’ve got some really exciting things coming up that I can’t wait to share. Leeds just seems to get better each festive season, and this year is looking like its going to be the best yet.

Young man to OLD MAN

N Jonathan Hanks becomes iconic Christmas character, Ebenezer Scrooge, for Northern Ballet’s latest tour.

orthern Ballet will spread Christmas cheer across Yorkshire when the Company brings Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol to Yorkshire as part of a new national tour, which culminates with a three-week run at Leeds Grand Theatre from 17 December to 4 January.

This magical production combines traditional ballet and captivating theatre to tell the story of Ebenezer Scrooge and his transformation from notorious grump to champion of the Christmas spirit.

Taking the lead role will be Jonathan Hanks who has been rehearsing with the brilliant Jeremy Kerridge, a legend in the ballet world, who originated the role of Scrooge in the inaugural production of Northern Ballet’s A Christmas Carol back in 1992.

“He has given me so many useful insights into how to play the character,” Jonathan said. “But of course I have my own ideas, and how wonderful to play somebody that has two distinct sides to him, romantic and mean.”

Jonathan’s transformation into the iconic villain is quite extraordinary and has been documented by the dancer.

Jonathan’s favourite scene in the ballet is the solo where he is getting dressed to go to the parade of plenty.

instant hit with audiences.

Following the revival of Romeo & Juliet earlier this year, Director Federico Bonelli has continued the trend of revisiting Northern Ballet’s retired landmark productions to the glee of long-time supporters and new audiences alike.

Federico said: “Alongside exploring new stories that connect, I am passionate about preserving the heritage of Northern Ballet. This signature piece from the era of Christopher Gable, like Romeo & Juliet, was a landmark moment in the Company’s history and continues to be beloved by our audiences which is why I’m so excited to return it to the stage this winter.

“Charles Dickens’ classic tale of redemption with its message of human kindness and compassion is something that resonates with us all especially at this time of year. Its iconic characters lend themselves so well to ballet and I look forward to seeing audiences of all ages enjoying the show with us over the coming months.”

Turning into art MEMORIES

Artist Holly Clifford discusses her collection that makes memories last a lifetime. By Rosie Brennan.

Art jeweller and designer Holly Clifford creates stunningly unique handmade jewellery to

Currently enjoying creating her work in a spacious studio at Yorkshire Artspace, she has created a ‘Contour Map Collection’, celebrating the personal

in our life through creative jewellery and wall pieces.

According to the artist, the collection “focuses on the narrative power of maps; which have the capacity to tell tales of our travels, adventures, and history so well. Maps are both functional and beautiful. I transfer the contour lines from iconic and meaningful locations, and cut their pattern into a sheet of metal before hand-forming topographical works of art and jewellery.

“I engrave rivers and bodies of water into the landscapes, as well as adding markers on bespoke maps which pin-point special locations, using silver or gold granules or gemstones. Often customers like to have their map personalised further with engraved details, such as initials, place names and dates, on the reverse of

She says: “Memories are made in places; we often tie a lot of meaning to certain locations, forming strong connections with them because of events that happened there.

“Whether it’s the treasured location of a whole life lived, a milestone occasion experienced, or an epic physical challenge completed, every map has a different story to tell. An incredible amount of detail and hard work goes into the creation of the maps, with Holly ensuring her intricate method is done to perfection. The process for the large-scale wall art and the smaller jewellery pieces begins in the same way, by extracting the elevation data using specialist mapping software.

Holly explains: “If it’s a commissioned map, I generally create templates at two different scales for the customer to choose from. Then, I have a discussion with them to ensure that I create a piece that meets

Doncaster’s DN1 continues to impress - be prepared for the unexpected, writes Richard Abbey.

iven the nature of my job, I’m very fortunate to be able to eat out at various restaurants throughout the Yorkshire region and have experienced some truly fantastic places along the way. But however good a restaurant is, so often they can be predictable. Menus can be dressed up in all kinds of different ways but you pretty much know what you’re going to get once you’ve ordered. So when a chef truly surprises you it can catch you, well, very much by surprise.

Having been to Doncaster’s DN1 before I was familiar with the format; a choice of strong emphasis on seafood, given that the venue is owned by Martyn Pippard, aka The Gentleman Fishmonger.

Given that it was lunchtime we’d chosen the smaller menu (£64 per person) but which came with an optional extra course (£8 supplement per person), simply

Without too much explanation but plenty of encouragement from front of house Alex we decided to take him up on the offer. Served before what you would consider to be the ‘main course’, this dish truly blew us away. The tuna, aubergine and form of a traditional Greek moussaka, inspired by a recent trip by head chef

such a clever dish, rich and comforting, but you would never have known you were delicious.

Not quite as surprising but with plenty of quirkiness was the ‘duck’ and ‘bread’

course, which were served together and were DN1’s take on an eggs benedict. On

The menu started with what has become chef’s signature, an onion macaron with chicken liver parfait, pickled onion gel and crispy shallots. Sweet and savoury, these on the menus and will be able to buy and make at home this Christmas.

After the ‘eggs benedict’ came what was perhaps my favourite dish (after the moussaka of course). A rolled ballotine of steamed cod and parsley was served

skin and the most delicious chicken butter sauce, which had been split with parsley

and brough the dish together beautifully.

There were two options for main course: wild seabass or Iberico pork (£14 supplement), which continued the already

It doesn’t seem that long since I last visited DN1 but lots has happened, most notably the awarding of 2 AA Rosettes and a high commendation from restaurant critic Giles Coren.

The restaurant has changed in appearance; the chef’s bench remains as well as the separate dining room but more walls have gone up to create a more intimate space separate from the deli, which in turn has created more seating. The restaurant now extends to 22 covers.

One thing that hasn’t changed is the quality of the food which remains

in this environment and it’s both fascinating and pleasurable to watch them work as they prepare each dish with precision.

orkshire folk are well known for being straight talking and to the point but one thing we’re perhaps not so good at is talking ourselves up. Telling everyone how fantastic the county and its people are is not really in our nature but is something we should perhaps do more of. Particularly when there is so much to shout about.

One venue doing Yorkshire proud and Doncaster’s DN1 Delicatessen & Dining, a hidden gem that just keeps getting better and better.

And with Christmas approaching, now is the perfect time to visit.

The High Fisher Gate location, which

New for this year, and something that are hugely popular in the restaurant, is macarons, which will be available in boxes of six or 12 and can be made up at home; all ingredients will be supplied so you can create your very own canapes.

The ‘Dining’ part of DN1 is equally impressive and has captured the imagination of visitors from all over the country, earning 2 AA Rosettes as well as high praise from esteemed restaurant critic, Giles Coren.

Inspired bySICILY

Suburban Leeds is full of delicious surprises, writes Ross Heppenstall.

estled in the well-heeled Leeds suburb of Alwoodley lies a small corner of Sicily, with Marinella’s providing a delightful culinary offering of traditional Sicilian and Italian dishes.

Situated between a parade of shops,

homemade food to eat in or take away. It opened around seven years ago, has an outdoor seating area, and has become an increasingly popular dining spot for the people of north Leeds and beyond.

A lot of Marinella’s dishes are inspired by Sicily, an autonomous region of southern Italy and the largest island in the Mediterranean Sea.

With traces of human activity dating back as early as 12,000 BC, Sicily has a particularly rich and unique culture,

especially with respect to its ancient architectural remnants like the Necropolis, Selinute and Valley of the Temples, as well as a long history of art, literature, music and food.

Marinella’s certainly captures the vibe

on a drizzly Monday teatime, the warm welcome from Marinella herself – who runs this cosy establishment – is an antidote to the miserable weather outside.

Marinella is very hands-on and on this particular evening is ably assisted by her sister and her great-nephew. The service is outstanding.

It is a small venue and more café than restaurant, but the friendly atmosphere is so relaxed and welcoming.

As my dining partner and I were soon

to discover, the food here is absolutely amazing.

Sicily’s savoury cuisine is considered among the healthiest in Italy with a huge emphasis on seafood, particularly tuna and like tomatoes, olives, citrus, capers, beans and artichokes.

Marinella’s sister Lena runs us through the menu with a specials board offering a wide range of starters and mains.

Alcohol is not served but diners can bring their own and a wide range of soft drinks are available on the menu.

Starters on the specials board include served with salad at just £8.95. Other starters include Calamari Fritti at £9.95 with Gamberoni Piccanti (king prawns in

a tomato chilli sauce) and Sarde Impanate (fried sardines in breadcrumbs) both priced at £8.95.

My friend, having never tried artichokes

Served with salad, this was a succulent dish and beautifully cooked.

We also ordered tomato garlic bread to go with our starters but, aside from the Specials board, there is a fantastic offering on the ‘Eat In Or Take Home Menu’ with pasta dishes.

Other starters include Minestrone soup at vegetables of the day with cheeses or salamis (both £10.95) or both (£13.95).

The choice is superb and other main dishes include Rigatoni Bolognese at £8.95, Spaghetti Polpette – special home-made Sicilian meatballs – at £9.95 and Tagliatelle Carbonara at £10.95.

Homemade lasagne (£9.95), Risotto Casalinga (£9.95) and Penne Arrabiata (£8.95) are also on the menu and, of course, homemade pizzas – an Italian speciality, of course.

With such a great selection of main

“It is a small venue and more café than restaurant, but the friendly atmosphere is so relaxed and welcoming.”

For my main, I went for the succulent Tonno Barcelona dish off the specials board, priced at £19.95. This was a mouthwatering Sicilian-style grilled tuna steaks dish, grilled to perfection and topped was delicious!

a delicious Sicilian style chicken – slightly sweet and sour with a touch of red wine vinegar and sugar served with salad and lemon.

The portion sizes are very generous and we almost full to bursting after our starters and mains.

But the range of desserts are simply stunning and it would be rude not to try one of them.

There is Cannoli Siciliana, a Sicilian pastry consisting of a tube-shaped shell

There is also several cakes and but we authentic taste of Sicily and truly heavenly. Desserts are extremely competitively priced at £4.25, so a starter, main and pudding totals at less than £30. Amazing value.

There is also a range of hot drinks available and, as the evening goes on, more diners arrive to what is a very familyfriendly establishment.

Marinella’s are welcoming bookings now for the festive season – lunchtimes or evenings are available from 1 December – with a Christmas menu available on request.
