elcome to the October edition of Eastside. We’re gazing at the stars this month as we take a closer look at North Star, a new initiative bringing communities together through science. – and you can be a part of it. The interactive artwork is being created by The People’s Picture who are inviting contributors to send in science-related pictures - and it doesn’t just mean space, rockets and planets. Science is all around us. Elsewhere we look at getting fit for Christmas, with advice from the experts and everything you may need to start your fitness journey. We’ve been actively encouraged to holiday in this country over recent months and this looks like something that will continue into the future. With that in mind we look at some top ‘staycation’ spots. We also look at Covid-compliant birthday party options, find out what’s happening in Bawtry and look at the latest fashion and home ideas.

Dorset

Devon

Located in southwest England, Dorset is known for the Jurassic Coast, a long stretch on the English Channel where the cliffs contain many fossils, and rock formations show millions of years of geological history. Two prominent natural landmarks includes Durdle Door, an ancient stone arch, and the layered cliffs at Lulworth Cove. The towns of Poole, Weymouth and Swanage are popular for their sandy beaches. Dorset has a variety of museums, theatres and festivals, and is host to the Great Dorset Steam Fair, one of the biggest events of its kind in Europe. The region is also renowned for being the birthplace of notable literary figures such as Thomas Hardy, who used the county as the principal setting of his novels, and William Barnes, whose poetry celebrates the ancient Dorset dialect.

Located in south-west England, Devon is renowned for its sandy beaches, fossil cliffs, medieval towns and moorland national parks. The English Riviera is a series of picturesque, south-coast harbour towns including Torquay, Paignton and Brixham. The South West Coast Path follows the coastline, taking in the towering cliffs of the northern Exmoor Coast and rock formations on the fossil-rich southern Jurassic Coast. Devon also has a comparatively mild climate, which makes it very appealing to traditional holidaymakers. This diverse region has everything from the bustling cities of Plymouth and Exeter to an abundance of family-friendly holiday resorts in the south. Devon also has two national parks, plenty of waterways and countrysides perfect for a rural or riverside retreat.

Cornwall Located on England’s rugged south-western tip, Cornwall has been a holiday favourite for generations. Renowned for its spectacular coastline and very mild climate, the region forms a peninsula encompassing wild moorland and hundreds of sandy beaches, culminating at the dramatic granite cliffs of Land’s End. The south coast, dubbed the Cornish Riviera, is home to picturesque harbour villages such as St. Ives and Falmouth. The north coast is lined with towering cliffs and seaside resorts like Newquay, known for surfing. Extensive stretches of Cornwall’s coastline, and Bodmin Moor, are protected as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Eastside | www.eastsidemag.co.uk 15

Lindisfarne, Northumberland

Northumberland

Norfolk

Stretching from the Scottish Borders to Hadrian’s Wall, Northumberland is home to two Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty and a national park. Located on the northeast coast of England, the region is renowned for its undeveloped landscape of high moorland, which is now largely protected as the Northumberland National Park. Northumberland remains largely rural and is the leastdensely populated county in England. In recent years the region has had considerable growth in tourism.Visitors are attracted to its scenic beauty, expansive beaches and historical sites. A boat trip to the Farne Islands to see the wildlife or the historic eighth century Lindisfarne Gospels on Holy Island is a must for holidaymakers.

Located in East Anglia, Norfolk is a popular tourist destination and has several major holiday attractions. The region boasts many seaside resorts, including some of the finest British beaches, such as those at Great Yarmouth, Cromer and Holkham. Alongside this, Norfolk also contains the Broads National Park and other Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Many areas of Norfolk’s coast are wild bird sanctuaries and reserves, with some areas designated as national parks such as the Norfolk Coast AONB. The region’s largest city, Norwich is renowned for its heritage, culture and shopping, as well as countless outdoor activities, a variety of family theme parks and attractions, historical sights and Royal connections.

TRAVEL

The Lake District Located in the northwest of England, the Lake District is the largest national park in the UK. A popular vacation destination, the region is known for its glacial ribbon lakes, rugged fell mountains and historic literary associations. The Lake District is home to Scafell Pike, the highest mountain in England, as well as Wastwater and Windermere, the deepest and largest natural lakes in the country. Sixteen million visitors a year enjoy a wide range of activities and attractions such as camping, hiking, cycling and sailing. Market towns such as Kendal, Ambleside and Keswick on scenic Derwentwater are bases for exploring the region and are home to a variety of traditional inns, galleries of local art and outdoor equipment shops.

Wales Wales is known for its rugged coastline, mountainous national parks and Celtic culture. It has three national parks: Snowdonia, Brecon Beacons and Pembrokeshire Coast. Snowdon is the highest mountain in the UK outside of Scotland and attracts thousands of visitors every year. Wales is a place of natural drama and things to do, from the country’s beautiful beaches such as Tenby, to walking the stunning mountain ranges of Snowdon. Its capital city, Cardiff, is a refined coastal city with a nightlife scene and a medieval castle with ornate Gothic Revival interiors.

Yorkshire We couldn’t put together a ‘staycation guide’ without including our very own county. Within the borders of this historic region are more national parks than any other place in the UK. This includes the Yorkshire Dales, the North York Moors and part of the Peak District. The soaring natural beauty of the Yorkshire Dales, the stunning landscapes of the North York Moors and the dramatic hills of the Peak District have attracted more visitors than ever over the last few years, made popular by events such as the Tour de Yorkshire. Alongside its various national parks, the region also boasts beautiful seaside resorts such as Scarborough, Filey and the ever-popular Whitby. The county town of York is also a popular destination as it is home to many historic buildings such as the thirteenth century cathedral York Minster, Tudor houses and medieval walls. SCIENCE

Capture science in all its glory NORTH STAR ARE BRINGING COMMUNITIES TOGETHER THROUGH SCIENCE. TAKE PART – BE A STAR AND SUBMIT A PHOTOGRAPH TO AN INTERACTIVE GALAXY. cience is everywhere – from the moment the sun rises, right through to the stars in the night sky. It inspires, helps save lives, challenges us and educates. This is why it’s important we celebrate science itself and the brilliant minds behind it whenever we can. North Star: a People’s Picture is doing just that. Working in partnership with some fantastic organisations and schools in Rotherham, the interactive artwork aims to bring people together to celebrate a love of science and the great minds who have charted a course through innovation in Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Maths. The artwork is being created by The People’s Picture, a photography and design studio. Every piece of artwork they create is made up of thousands of images, with every piece telling its own story – North Star is no different. Every image submitted has space for a caption to tell the world about what their photograph means to them. And although the images need to represent science, that doesn’t just mean space, planets and rockets. Science really is all around us, from the kettle in your kitchen and your mobile phone, right through to growing vegetables, rock formations and even buildings!

S

20 Eastside | www.eastsidemag.co.uk

So far, the project has had a host of wonderful images, including a homemade rocket backpack, beautiful drawings of planets, and photos of inventions that have changed lives. Helen Marshall, artistic director CEO of The People’s Picture said: “I’m proud to have been invited as an artist to explore the stories and pictures from the community. I’m excited to harness the technology at the intersection between science and art – bringing together the wonderful pictures and stories to make one beautiful piece of artwork to celebrate STEAM and its impact of the community.” Kris Mackay, Programme Manager for Well Rotherham added: “All of us involved in this project believe that inspired communities can chart their own path to health, wealth and happiness. We know that our communities are full of inspirational stories and we’re excited to be able to share them in such a unique way.” To take part, visit www.northstarscienceschool.co.uk and upload your favourite photograph that represents how science has inspired you. Add a photo caption so the team know a bit more about the image – then watch it be added to their galaxy! You’ll also be able to look through the other photographs that have been submitted.

SCIENCE

What’s the history behind The North Star? The art project is running ahead of the North Star, a Science Summer School Event, which will be a week-long event from 1 December. The event is part of Professor Brian Cox’s Science Summer School which was started in partnership with Lord Andrew Mawson and has been running for eight years. It mixes the best of the STEAM subjects – Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Maths – through seminars, discussions and hands-on experiments. Last summer, the North Star partnership, led by Well Rotherham and including Rotherham and Sheffield Councils, Harworth Group, the Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre, UK Atomic Energy Authority, Rolls-Royce and Gulliver's Valley, were lucky enough to support 23 young people from Rotherham on a three-day trip to London to take part in the school. It was always the intention of Professor Cox and Lord Mawson to create a northern satellite event and Rotherham was chosen to pioneer the northern expansion. Find out more about the event at www.northstarscience school.co.uk.

HEAR FROM SOME OF THE GREAT MINDS IN SHEFFIELD ON HOW THEY’VE BEEN INSPIRED IN THEIR CAREERS.

Ruth Amos

Creator of StairSteady and co-founder of Kids Invent Stuff Ruth Amos is the great mind behind StairSteady – a product she invented when she was 15 years old studying for her GCSEs. “My Design and Technology teacher set me a challenge to design something to help his father, who had a stroke, to get up the stairs safely and at his own pace. That’s when I designed the StairSteady, a product that helps anyone stay safe on the stairs. It really took off and we now sell across the UK, Australia and Canada. “I never really thought about going down this career route, I originally wanted to study Law but I’m glad that I fell into engineering! “I then co-founded, with my friend Shawn Brown, a company called Kids Invent Stuff. What we do is get inventions sent to us from kids who are aged 4-11, we build them, test them and really bring their drawings to life! We’ve built so many amazing things from a giant electric toothbrush to furry electric dog cars that it’s hard to pick my favourite! “The STEM subjects are so important because they affect everything we do and interact with. There are such a wide range of careers, that I am constantly meeting new people which means everyday I get even more excited about what I do. “I would say if you’re interested in a career in engineering, talk to people who work in the field, get some work experience and see what area really interests you. If you want to go into inventing like myself, remember it’s all about having another go when things fail – don’t give up.”

22 Eastside | www.eastsidemag.co.uk

Dr Rahul Mandal Nuclear AMRC research associate

Rahul Mandal is a baker and engineering researcher, who won the ninth series of The Great British Bake Off in 2018. Mandal also works as an engineering researcher at the University of Sheffield’s Nuclear Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre. “I always wanted to know why and how things are happening around us. Science is all about knowing how things work. Whether it is how it rains, or how does a car move or how does a cake or bread rise in the oven: everything is science. “For me, baking is a perfect combination of science (chemistry, biology and physics), maths and engineering. Chemistry, as you mix different edible chemicals to create dough or batter, with tiny air bubbles trapped inside. Biology, as the culture of yeast provides carbon dioxide to make your bread rise. Physics, as those trapped gases expand and give the rise to the bakes. And Engineering, as you temper chocolate to create beautiful chocolate decoration!”

Amazelab – Leonie at Amazelab “Inspired by science everyday, these unusual times have taught us new ways to be inventive and use different ways and means to continue to bring activities and science to many.”

Don’t forget to follow North Star on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram as they’ll be hosting themed activity weeks, each relating on different subjects! You can find them @NorthStarSSE.

Tomatoes – submitted by Hannah “Plants are wonderful things; starting off from a seed, they use science to grow. I’m always fascinated by how much they give us – delicious fruit and vegetables, they help feed and provide homes for wildlife and give us something beautiful to look at.”

Beauty of our planet – submitted by Abigail “I chose this photo because it is special to me. It represents the beauty of natural earth and how through decades and generations humans have morphed the earth.”

Rocket Kid – submitted by Jude “A lock down rocket man inspired by reading lots of space books.”

Climbing – submitted by Samuel “As a climber, the geology of rocks fascinates me. I travel the world searching for the perfect rock to climb on. We can thank science for explaining how these beautiful patterns are formed.”

Wentworth Woodhouse – submitted by Rachel “The centre of the parquet floor in the Marble Salon of Wentworth Woodhouse by architect John Carr of York using knowledge of maths, materials and science to create a design which at the centre evokes beautiful imagery of natural leaves.”

Plant fossils – submitted by Eric “These plant fossils found 50 metres from The University of Sheffield AMRC are 310 million years old. They’re from the coal measures that sparked that industrial/scientific revolution.”

Wildflower mixes – submitted by Miranda Plowden “I love these wildflower mixes crafted by Pictorial Meadows from a deep understanding of botany, urban ecology and design. They combine native and non-native species to produce a stunning year-round tapestry.”

Contact lens – submitted by Lucy “This is a close-up image of my disposable contact lens, which I think is an incredible invention that dates back to 1982. However, original glass contact lenses were invented in 1887, by the magnificent F.A Muller and Adolf E. Fick!”

FITNESS

Fit for purpose DON’T BE A CHRISTMAS PUDDING THIS YEAR. THERE’S STILL TIME TO GET FITTER, LIVE HEALTHIER AND FEEL GREAT. WHILE OTHERS WAIT ON NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS, YOU COULD ALREADY BE BASKING IN YOUR ACHIEVEMENTS… WITH A LITTLE EXPERT HEALTH. f you’re serious about getting fit for Christmas, there are two important dates in the calendar. The first is 5 November. That’s when you build a bonfire – of all those books about miracle diets and other no-effort remedies. If they have any effect at all, it’s likely to be short-lived. And the prospect of a week on cabbage soup or equivalent, in our estimation at least, is a greater threat to the will to live than any form of physical torture yet devised. But it doesn’t have to be a choice like that. Just ask an international elite athlete. Take Mary Fleming for instance. She has represented Australia as part of the national orienteering team. For those of us unfamiliar with the sport, it involves navigational skills using a map and compass to navigate from point to point in diverse and usually unfamiliar terrain whilst moving at speed. Considerable speed. Originally a training exercise in land navigation for military officers, it’s rather like fast fell running while finding your way with a map. It is, to say the least, demanding. But having forsaken her native Melbourne for South Yorkshire, she has now turned her attention to getting us portly poms in shape. Her second business venture – she is already involved in sports equipment retailing – provides personal training under the umbrella of Peak Fitness.

Our guide to fitness clubs in Doncaster There are numerous gyms and health clubs in Doncaster, most of them offering personal training. Here’s a brief guide to some of the best-known. BANNATYNE’S GYM Moorhead Way, Rotherham Membership: TBC Joining fee: TBC Swimming Pool: Yes Other: Cutting-edge equipment is available, including water rowers, SKILLMILL, Wattbikes and a specialist functional training zone

So how would she respond to the challenged of getting Mr or Mrs Average fit for Christmas? Mary says it’s all about setting ‘smart goals’ – goals that are measurable, achievable, relevant and time-based. This is not just about weight loss, though many of her clients have exactly that in mind. The measurable element comes as part of setting an individual’s chosen target. So what are the possibilities open to those who want to shed the pounds? A healthy amount would be one to two pounds per week, and Mary prepares an exercise programme accordingly. “If we have someone who wants to lose more – say a stone – then the realistic length of time required would be seven to 14 weeks, which is readily achievable if the aim is to do this in time for Christmas – even one to two stones is within reach. “If a client came and said they wanted to lose four stones, then we would have to advise them that this is not a healthy goal in the available span of time. But perhaps by March it could be done.” As part of the fresh look at all matters relating to well-being, Mary creates a diet diary and recommends improvements, albeit gradual ones. “I would not recommend a complete overhaul of someone’s diet immediately. It’s a case of one or two changes each week, so the chances of success are far greater,” she says. The best motivating factor is when a client has a specific aim in mind – like being able to fit into a wedding dress in 28 Eastside | www.eastsidemag.co.uk

time for the day, or perhaps they’ve signed up for a 10k race. “It often comes down to a choice – either you find a motivator or you have to adjust your expectations.” One success story she is particularly proud of is that of a 54-year-old client who was a regular short distance runner, but wanted to improve her speed and distance capabilities without aggravating a niggling injury. At the end of a carefully-crafted exercise schedule, the client succeeded in her goal of running the London Marathon. Turning to the content of the training schedule, Mary sets a balance of roughly 80 per cent cardio-vascular development and 20 per cent strength and conditioning. The schedules are built around timed sessions based on activities like rowing machine work and running, both indoor or outdoor, or cross training and cycling. But how to ensure that all this effort is not wasted amid a junkfest of mince pies and turkey, and a torrent of Baileys and Malibu? Easy. We set the date for being fit by Christmas as 1 December, and then start work on the next goal for the post-festive season and beyond. This allows for a little ‘downtime’ during the Christmas season itself. Whatever your aim, it’s achievable and the best time to start is now.You can have a new outlook on life by the time you’re unwrapping the presents. Believe.

Taking the positives ANGIE HUDDART HAS SEEN SOME UNPRECEDENTED CHALLENGES IN HER FIRST YEAR IN BUSINESS BUT IS LOOKING FORWARD WITH OPTIMISM.

t’s been a phenomenal first year in business for Angie Huddart. After fulfilling her dream of opening her own ladies boutique – Angi Lou – late last year, the former NHS GP practice manager has had to adapt and evolve her business during the Covid-19 pandemic. “Never did it feature in my business plan the steps I might have to take to survive a world pandemic within five months of opening,” she beamed. After admittedly shedding plenty of tears and enduring countless sleepless nights, Angie turned to social media during lockdown – the reaction was like nothing she could have imagined. In order to drive sales through lockdown, Angie started live-streaming on Facebook and saw her audience grow from 30 loyal customers to in excess of 5,000. She consistently delivered to customers locally in Doncaster and used couriers to ship products further afield to places including County Durham, East Yorkshire, Derbyshire, Lincolnshire and even London. Since re-opening the boutique, Angie has seen that many of her new customers have been keen to sample the ‘bricks and mortar’ store, which is located on Market Place in Tickhill. Many have become regular visitors and, as a bonus for the area, have been sharing their custom amongst other businesses. “My customers have been incredibly complimentary about my use of social media and I have always acknowledged

I

32 Eastside | www.eastsidemag.co.uk

the importance of promoting other local businesses in Tickhill during my livestreaming, knowing that once we could reopen, growth for other businesses, not just my own, is paramount to keep our high street busy and interesting to visit,” added Angie. “Tickhill businesses have been outstanding in the way they have supported locals during lockdown and customers are now paying back that loyalty and tell me that they feel far safer shopping locally.” One of the biggest challenges Angie faced was what to do about her summer stock. “We were committed to buying it, either that or endure a substantial cancellation fee with no stock to offer,” she explained. “So we made the decision to launch an unprecedented sale offering 50 per cent off everything, even new lines of clothing. It was a case of accepting the season was a write-off.” But a diversity of brands and a more

casual approach has seen Angi Lou’s sales continue to grow. Fashion face coverings have proved really popular and new ranges, including designer dog collars with matching belts for their owners, join the autumn stock, which is now in store. Leading footwear brands Caprice and Alpe have also been added to the range. Now that things have started to settle down, Angie has time to reflect – and wouldn’t change a thing. “I can honestly say that I do have not one single regret. I have found a wealth of new skills, faced monumental challenges and have had to diversify and change my mode de emploi rapidly in these testing times,” concluded Angie. What is MediSculpt Therapy? G&M HEALTHCARE CAN HELP YOU ACHIEVE YOUR WEIGHT LOSS GOALS. ediSculpt Therapy is a nonsurgical, very low calorie weight loss program which can combat obesity and some chronic medical conditions like type 2 Diabetes Mellitus, high cholesterol, hypertension and sleep apnoea. Medisculpt Therapy comprises of three main components; the diet, which is based on high protein foods with low carbohydrate and low fat contents, and two body contouring treatments – LPG Endermologie and Vanquish MeTM or Exilis Elite machines. The body contouring treatment LPG Endermologie is used for skin tightening in order to prevent the development of loose and sagging skin during and after the rapid weight loss. The second body contouring machine is a radio frequency machine for body fat reduction. G&M Healthcare has both of these machines and the choice of which one to use depends on the treatment package and area of the body requiring treatment. The radio frequency machines result in a significant fat reduction in targeted areas like the tummy, thighs or arms. These treatments are carried out weekly by fully-trained therapists and last about 3040 minutes each. In total you need about 75-90 minutes per week for your treatments. Weight loss with MediSculpt Therapy is safe, efficient and rapid. The weight loss progress is constantly monitored by a qualified GP and fully trained therapists who check weight loss progress, blood pressure, body fat content, metabolic rates and do blood tests on a regular basis. With regard to the results, they know from experience that a female patient will typically lose one stone a month and a male patient will typically lose one to one and a half stones a month. MediSculpt Therapy consists of six phases, which deliver amazing, safe, efficient and sustainable weight loss.

M

40 Eastside | www.eastsidemag.co.uk

During phase 1 of MediSculpt Therapy the diet comprises of five meals and one snack a day. Protein foods are filling, hence patients don’t Before feel hungry. To supplement the diet some fruit and vegetables are also allowed on the diet. G&M Healthcare also do metabolic tests to check your metabolic rates and also provide supplements to ensure you don’t lack in essential minerals like magnesium, potassium, sodium chloride, calcium and trace minerals. Once the phase 1 target is achieved after losing about 70 per cent of your target weight, patients are moved onto phase 2 where ‘normal foods’, like weighed amounts of chicken, meat, fish and diary like eggs, are introduced. Once 90 per cent of your target weight loss is achieved patients are weaned to measured amounts of normal eating on phase 3. Thereafter phases 4-6 are stabilisation phases to ensure that optimum weaning off from the diet is achieved without putting on back the weight you have lost. After the stabilisation phase there is a life-long maintenance programme where G&M Healthcare six weekly follow ups for review by a therapist who measures your weight and body fat composition. Follow up is then 3-6 monthly for one year or as required thereafter. The cost of the program depends on the package you choose. There are three price packages – basic, standard and deluxe. All consist of your consultation fee (£100) and blood test fee (£100) followed by the package fees. Supplement prices are £50/month but

After

vary depending on the package you choose. The basic package is £125/week for only food. The standard package is £250/week for food and body contouring treatments with LPG Endermologie and Vanquish or Exilis Elite. The deluxe package is £300/week and includes food, body contouring treatments, supplements, 4 weekly reviews and blood tests. Recent studies from the Diabetes Remission Clinical Trial (DiRECT), published by G Thom et al in Glasgow in collaboration with the NHS in September this year and by Yiqoao Xin et al in May 2020, have shown that very low calorie diets can cause remission in people with early type 2 Diabetes Mellitus of less than six years since onset. The programme is now being rolled out on a bigger trial of 5,000 people in the UK. G&M Healthcare is offering a free informal consultation with their GP, so if you would like to learn more and have your weight and body fat composition checked, please call 0114 233 5000, text them on 07944 629727 or email g.m.healthcarereception@gmail.com

EATING OUT

Different class FEELING OVERWHELMED? SOMETIMES IT’S BEST TO LEAVE YOUR MENU CHOICES TO THE EXPERTS, WRITES RICHARD ABBEY. oncaster is surrounded by some charming villages and towns, none more so than Tickhill, which sits on the Nottinghamshire border. Surrounding the buttercross, which sits at the heart of the market town, is a plethora of independent shops and businesses that give it a real sense of community. Who needs the high street when you have everything you need on your doorstep? Every town needs a good curry house and Tickhill doesn’t fall short in that respect, in fact, Zara’s restaurant, which has occupied its Sunderland Street location for 20 years, is a favourite not just in the town but further afield too. It’s easy to see why. Despite my many years working for Eastside magazine and writing reviews for restaurants such as this one, this was actually my first visit. Our welcome couldn’t have been warmer. Mask-wearing waiters Unu and Abdul were the perfect hosts, recommending dishes for us to try and chatting to us throughout our meal. The intimate restaurant space – a mix of dark wood and green/gold décor – is currently running at a reduced capacity but feels no worse for it. We took a table by the window and started with a couple of crunchy poppadoms (80p each) and a

well-stocked pickle tray (£2.50) paired with cool pints of Cobra beer (£3.70). It’s sometimes too easy to ‘stick to what you know’, particularly at Indian restaurants where menus can be overwhelming and are often on the large side. Why is it the lamb karai always seems to jump out at you? The menu at Zara’s is no exception with a huge list of starters, tandoori dishes, old favourites, ‘Zara’s recommends’, chef specialities, hot and spicy dishes, biryani, vegetable, masallam, rice, sundries and seafood dishes. On this occasion, we decided to leave our choices in the hands of the very capable Abdul. Two mixed starters – a meat version (£5.60) and a vegetable version (£4.70) – presented an array of tasty options. From the former we ate sheekh kebab, chicken tikka, lamb tikka

and tandoori king prawns while the veggie options included samosa, onion bhaji, vegetable pakora and aloo chop. I particularly enjoyed the meaty prawns whilst my dining companion gave the thumbs up to the pakora, which was lovely and crisp. For mains, Abdul recommended that we try a Zara’s special with lamb (£12.90), which is listed on the menu as chef ’s favourite dish, is medium-spiced, strongly flavoured and represented a home style of cooking. The lamb was incredibly tender and the sauce rich and full of flavour – this was comfort food at its best. Across the table, my dining companion enthused over his Sylheti Shatkora (£11.20), a fresh tasting chicken curry made with yoghurt, cinnamon, bay leaves and garam masala. The dish was given extra zing with the addition of shatkora, a tangy, aromatic citrus fruit which is native to Bangladesh. As an extra treat, Abdul also brought us something off menu, a vegetable side dish of chickpeas, spinach and garlic which was just delicious. Side dishes of mushroom pilau (£3.60) and kulcha nan (£3.60) were adequate accompaniments. The latter, made with onion, green pepper and garlic, was especially good and perfect for mopping

up the last few bits of sauce. There was the offer of coffee and dessert but we politely declined, appetites fully satisfied. Many of our writers over the years have raved about Zara’s and it’s always scored consistently well in our annual restaurant awards. It’s easy to see why. The charming location, combined with excellent food from a chef who has been there as long as the restaurant has and flawless service, is something to be envied. This might have been my first visit but won’t be my last.

Quality counts MARTIN EDWARDS VISITS A RESTAURANT THAT IS LEADING THE WAY IN A QUEST FOR EXCELLENCE. Chinese friend of mine once told me a little about the nuances of the language. It’s largely down to pronunciation, apparently. As an example, he spoke two different words. To my ear, they were identical. They weren’t. The first meant ‘bean curd’, the second underpants. The moral of the story is this; One, if you like to try out your languages on the waiter when you visit a restaurant, don’t. Certainly in Cantonese. Two, what is on the surface a small difference can be much larger than you bargained for. It’s the same in English. Take the words ‘quantity’ and ‘quality’. Sound similar, but in practice they’re light years apart. Never was this more the case than in the restaurant business. It used to be accepted wisdom that the only

A

restaurants to stand a chance of survival in Sheffield were those which offered ‘value for money’ (translation again – ‘more than you could possibly eat and who cares about the quality’). A trip to the Chinese almost without exception involved filling up on cheap inauthentic food at a restaurant or allyou-can-eat venue. Fast-forward to 2020. The Chinese presence in Sheffield is stronger than ever before. And with it has come a new breed of restaurateur. It is fitting that the Chinatown restaurant is virtually the first door you come to on Sheffield’s unofficial Chinatown district on London Road. It’s here that owner Martin Ng is leading the way in a quest for excellence above all else. In what was for years the landmark Candytown restaurant, he has wrought a

transformation not only in the appearance of the place, but in the standards of cuisine served there. Gone are the threadbare carpets and worn interior of distant memory, to be replaced by sumptuous furnishing and tables with those revolving tops that we Brits call a Lazy Susan. There is undoubtedly a Chinese translation of it, but let’s not go there. “When I took the place over, we absolutely tore the interior apart and started again. My aim was to create a totally different look to reflect a new start in the kitchen. I brought three expert chefs over with me from Hong Kong so we could be sure we had the best team behind us,” said Martin. The new emphasis was on quality of ingredients and above all freshness. The supreme test of that mission statement came with the scallops

recommended by Martin. He didn’t need to tell us they were supremely fresh, or that they were cooked to perfection. It was evident from the ‘oohhss’ and ‘aahhss’ around the table. Simple but beautifully presented, they were going to be a hard act to follow. There is not one, but two menus at Chinatown. The first is a sizeable standard menu, while the second caters

more for the Chinese clientele, with specialities such as Dim Sum. Incidentally, I’m not going to repeat the oft-quoted homily that a Chinese Restaurant must be good if there are lots of Chinese people in there. By the same token, would you be reassured about McDonalds because it was full of Americans? Chinatown is good – nay, very good, in

its own right. And so we ordered from both menus, just to be adventurous. We were rewarded with a turbot dish quite unlike any other ever encountered. Turbot happened to be the fresh fish of the day and the chefs served it in small goujons on a bed of Chinese vegetables in a ‘bowl’ made from the whole fish deep-fried and crispy. We feasted on abalone, prawn-stuffed aubergine cakes, delightfully-crisp salt and pepper tofu and aubergine (we like aubergines), along with the more familiar sesame prawn toasts and an accompaniment of pak choi cooked in garlic. A cold Tsing-Tao beer and a glass of the Conde Valdemar white Rioja, and our evening was complete. Chinatown 27 London Road, Sheffield, S2 4LA Tel: 0114 272 5311 www.chinatownrestaurant.co.uk

CHILDREN’S PARTIES

Happy (and safe) birthday HOW WILL CHILDREN BE CELEBRATING THEIR BIRTHDAYS OVER THE COMING MONTHS? FROM NETFLIX PARTIES TO SCAVENGER HUNTS, WE TAKE A CLOSER LOOK AT COVID-COMPLIANT OPTIONS.

051 ESide Oct20 15/09/2020 10:31 Page 1

CHILDREN’S PARTIES

he last six months have been a challenging time for all of us, if you’re a parent, perhaps even more so. Homeschooling is something many of us thought we would never have to do but quickly became a way of life was we got to grips with Google Classroom, Numbots, Oak National Academy and PE With Joe. If you managed to make it through without a cross word, hat’s off to you, you deserve a medal. Now your children have returned to school all those months of hard work and endeavour to keep them educated and entertained is quickly forgotten. Talk of new teachers, new rules and what friends have been up to during lockdown has taken over. It’s about as ‘normal’ as we can get at this moment in time. This return to school and reconnection with friends also raises the question of birthday parties, particularly amongst younger children. It’ll not be long before invitations are flying out for those children who will be celebrating birthdays in the coming weeks and months. But something will have to change. Due to the current Covid-19 pandemic, a lot of the usual ‘go-to’ parties are no longer an option. Play centres have only just re-opened and are limiting numbers, swimming parties are a no-no and having the whole class round for tea is perhaps something that will have to wait until next year. So what’s left? Something outdoors is the first thing that springs to mind as this is the best way to minimise the chance of any infection but, depending on when your birthday is, you’re probably going to be weather dependent. If it does take a turn for the worse, there are plenty of virtual options which, let’s be honest, have become second nature to our younger ones. Here we look at some socially distant and Covid-compliant party options, inside and out.

T

Woodland magic A trip to the woods is great for children who love wildlife and it’s a wonderful way to get them active in the fresh air. Try activities including den building, scavenger hunts, nature watching and even an obstacle course.

Teddy bears picnic This can be held in your own back

garden or at a nearby park. Ask your friends to each bring a bear and gather in socially distant spaces for drinks, nibbles and maybe even a game of musical statues.

Woodland and Dino Dens amongst others. To find out more, visit justjimjams.wixsite.com.

Netflix and chill

Again, this could be held at home or any other outdoor space. Draw maps, create clues and let children have fun exploring their surroundings. You could even add a theme. Finish off with a mini picnic or event a piñata.

A Netflix party lets friends in different places watch movies or TV shows together online. Netflix Party synchronises video playback and adds group chat to your favourite Netflix shows. It’s free to use, you just need a Netflix account and the Google Chrome browser. See netflixparty.com to find out more.

Football fever

Karaoke King (and Queen)

One for the boys, outdoor football venues are now re-open and are a great way to let your children blow off some steam. Goals, who have venues throughout Yorkshire, have reinstated their birthday packages and include 90 minutes of coach-led football fun as well as some tasty food and drinks afterwards.Visit goalsfootball.co.uk to find out more.

There are no end of video conferencing and call apps and all can be put to good use when it comes to hosting a virtual karaoke party. Whether you’re using Skype, Google Hangout or House Party, everyone can join in, whether they choose to sing or not. What would your go-to karaoke song be?

Treasure hunt

Sleepover party You might want to invite a few friends over to take residence in your garden for the night. There are plenty of companies who can organise the whole thing for you, supplying tents, dens, air mattresses, fairy lights… you name it. South Yorkshire-based Just Jim Jams started last year and have quickly adapted so they can continue to host parties in the current climate. Their glamping parties, held under a huge bell tent, have been a big hit with younger children. Many of their packages are themed; you can choose from Under the Sea, Fairy

Dinner date Much like the virtual karaoke party, older children might want to host a virtual dinner party. You can cook at home or order a takeaway, chat while you eat and drink and then maybe enjoy a game of bingo, host a quiz or play charades.

Pamper party Getting your girls together might seem like a great idea but you can host a pamper party at a distance use video apps like Skype, Zoom or FaceTime. Get some beauty video tutorials set up and follow along – you can do everything from make-up and nails to hair and brows. Eastside | www.eastsidemag.co.uk 51

The principles of preparing for a whole school reopening THE NEW PRINCIPAL OF QUEEN ETHELBURGA’S TALKS ABOUT PLANNING FOR A SEPTEMBER REOPENING, FOR ALL AGE GROUPS, AND HIS VISION FOR THE COLLEGIATE. tarting the next academic year as the new Principal of Queen Ethelburga’s Collegiate will be a very different experience to that which I had envisioned when I was first appointed. Having been in education over 30 years, 17 of these as the head of large UK and international independent schools, I’ve seen some change in practice. The challenges facing schools across the UK in preparing for full reopening in September – as we’ve heard said many times already –are unprecedented. With key worker and Forces boarding students staying on campus throughout lockdown, and a successful welcoming of our Reception,Year 1 and Year 6 cohort in early June, we now have plenty of experience of operating in a controlled lockdown. QE has complied with, and gone beyond, the measures required by government and we have committed ourselves to the BSA School Safe Charter. We are using this experience to ensure we have adaptable plans in place, as we welcome students back at the start of term. We have issued guidance to our students and parents on the measures we are taking to keep the campus as safe as possible, whilst maintaining the welcoming and happy atmosphere that they know and love. Our location is ideal. Queen Ethelburga’s benefits from a highly secure, rural campus, set in the stunning North Yorkshire countryside. It is looking increasingly likely that

school will be reopening in September without the social distance restrictions we have now, however, we are still planning to bring our boarders back two weeks earlier in August, so that we can offer quarantine if necessary, but also to offer a curriculum preparation programme for the year ahead. Our priorities for the next year build on QE’s success story to date. We know

Collegiate Principal Jeff Smith

that the key to academic excellence is the consistency in quality of teaching, therefore this will always be the focus for the Collegiate. Continuous improvement is also key. We will be reflecting on everything we do and will always seek feedback from our students, parents and teachers so that we understand our community needs and find ways to meet them. We will continue to find ways to broaden and improve the curriculum and enrichment opportunities we offer, and extend students learning beyond the restraints of the classroom. We will use our recent online teaching and learning experience to develop our IT strategy, taking the opportunity to develop elearning in an impactful way. Through our academic, pastoral and enrichment programmes, we will continue to develop the personal qualities of our students, such as leadership, resilience, critical thinking and responsibility. As always, we will prioritise the safeguarding, health and wellbeing of all our students and staff. To find out more about QE, visit www.qe.org.
