At Maison Parfaite our mission is to put the WOW factor into your Yorkshire experience, providing unrivalled holiday and executive business accommodation in some of Britain’s most exclusive, inspiring, and sought-after locations.
Maison Parfaite was lovingly founded in 2018 by husband-and-wife team Sarah and Sean McDermott, both born and bred in Yorkshire, and both equally fierce advocates of ‘God’s Own County’
They have a razor-sharp vision - a collaboration of their lifelong passions for property, travel, design, luxury living and exceptional customer service. And so, Maison Parfaite really sets the bar high when it comes to providing grand holiday residences in this glorious part of the world - providing a home away from home.
Their commitment to excellence has been recognised by prestigious brands such as Marriott Hotels International and Tatler, who have chosen Maison Parfaite to be their official partners.
Each and every one of the stunning period properties in their portfolio of achingly luxurious holiday homes and aparthotels has been hand-picked due to its perfect location, whether that be nestled deep within the rolling hills of the Yorkshire Dales, overlooking a magnificent unspoilt coastal seascape, or in the heart of a charming historical city.
Sean McDermott, infamous storyteller of all tales Yorkshire related, loves to acquire a property with an interesting history. And boy oh boy, these extraordinary abodes would have some stories to tell, if only walls could talk… like Skeldale House in Askrigg – a truly iconic building, which in its previous life was the veterinary surgery in the TV series ‘All Creatures Great and Small’ imagine being there, watching Peter Davidson and Christopher Timothy morph into their characters to bring the adventures of James Herriot to life!
And the Burgoyne Hotel in Reeth – once owned by Mrs Burgoyne Johnson, a notorious party girl in the 1920’s. One can only imagine the tales of scandal and intrigue that went on inside those walls!
Not forgetting Rounton Villa of course, commanding a prestigious plot with far-reaching sea views at Robin Hoods Bay, once owned by a Victorian Sea Captain who named the house after his ship, The Rounton.
And this is something that is truly unique to Maison Parfaite, their desire to restore and reinvigorate these most interesting and beautiful buildings, to give them a new lease of life so that you can enjoy these character properties and relive the stories of the past, whilst creating precious new memories of your own…
Sarah McDermott, the creative mind of the pair, really knows how to pack a punch when it comes to renovating these magnificent buildings. In her own words she takes the rather ‘woo woo’ approach of connecting with the history of the property through meditation and visualisation, and through this method she creates the most wondrous interiors, dripping with opulence and abundant with designer furnishings and fabrics from Christian Lacroix and Versace, to House of Hackney and Bontempi Casa, there’s no expense spared and Sarah refuses to compromise on the finish, which has got to be just so – sympathetic to the period of the building, in honour of the historic owners, and aesthetically spectacular, but with all the practicalities to suit the needs of the discerning modern traveller.

THEATRE MUSIC COMEDY EVENTS EXHIBITIONS FILM FURTHER AFIELD...
The touring production of Dear Even Hansen arrives in Leeds next month. Liam Rudden spoke to the two stars sharing the main role.
The multi award-winning Broadway musical, Dear Evan Hansen, is coming to Leeds Grand Theatre in UK tour.
Following the story of a socially anxious teenager navigating his way through profoundly personal hit musical features the talents of Oscar-winning composers Benj Pasek and Justin Paul (The Greatest Showman), and has picked up Tony, Oliver and Grammy awards.
We spoke to the new actors taking on the principal role of Evan Hansen, Ryan Kopel more.
How did you land the role?
Kopel: My agent asked me if I’d be interested in Dear Evan Hansen at the start of the year. I said ‘yes’, and then
March. A couple of days later, while on the Underground going home, my agent called to say I’d got the part.
I was so excited I had to get off the Tube to scream a little bit. Then realised I was miles away from my stop and would have to walk the rest of the way. That was even more tortuous as I couldn’t wait to see my family and partner’s faces when I told them.
Monaghan: I saw a post asking people to submit a video of themselves singing a number from Dear Evan Hansen through TikTok. I sang ‘Words Fail’. Maybe three weeks later, I got an email inviting me to an in-person audition.
What did you think of the show before you were cast?
Monaghan: As a self-confessed fan of
family holiday to New York, loving it so much that I went on to see the original West End production when it opened.
Kopel: I never saw the original production, but Dear Evan Hansen was such a huge
that I knew all about it without ever really knowing the story.
How did it feel to take on such an iconic leading role?
Kopel: As much as Ben Platt, the original Evan, was iconic in the role, it was nice to be able to form my own take on Evan. The writing is so good that I really can just trust my instinct to bring what I feel to the character. Usually when you do a musical that has been done before, there’s a set way of doing everything; ‘This is how you say this line’, and ‘This is where you stand on the stage for this moment’. We’ve had none of that. We have complete freedom to take the script and create something new. Just looking at the piece from the lens of 2024 has been an interesting experience.
How does it work having two Evans?
Monaghan: Mainly, it’s Ryan and the principal cast who are in the rehearsal room with director Adam Penford. They create the show. As the alternate Evan, I got brought in once it looks the way the want it to look. Then I work with our associate director to replicate that.
Kopel: To be fair, that is the case, but it’s also done that way because Sonny has about ’90 million’ different things to learn. While I’m lucky to be focussing on one character, he has to be in a different room learning the parts of Evan, Connor, Jared and all the ensemble’s moves too. 100 per cent do I have the easy shift… apart from having to do it every night.
Producers have partnered with The
Mix, Britain’s leading digital charity for under 25-year-olds, to ensure support for anyone affected by issues explored in the show – how have you navigated this partnership?
Kopel: The Mix is there for anyone who needs to reach out for support. We had a
of rehearsals where they explained what they did and the way they work. It was an incredible insight into a world I had no idea about. There’s just something about this show that allows people to connect deeply with the characters. We take that responsibility incredibly seriously and having that guidance from The Mix is vitally important.
Opening night is fast approaching, are you nervous at all?
Kopel: I kind of live in a state of constant nerves anyway, but nerves before a
means you care, so I’ll harness them and let them kick me up a gear…”
Monaghan: It’s like athletes. You have to use your nerves and adrenaline to reach your peak performance…
Kopel: Yes, and then keep it there for another two and half hours.
Lastly, Dear Evan Hansen starts with Evan writing a letter to himself, beginning with ‘Today is going to be a good day because…’ What would you each write in such a letter to yourselves?
Kopel: Keeping in line with the show, my letter would say, ‘Dear Ryan Kopel, today is going to be such a good day because you can take each day at a time, every hour as it comes’.
Monaghan: Mine would read, ‘Dear Sonny Monaghan, today is going to be a good day because this is what and where you want to be and you should know that you have worked hard and deserve to be here.’
The musical will be at Leeds Grand Theatre from Tuesday 5 Saturday 9 November 2024. Tickets are available at leedsheritagetheatres.com and at the Box

The changing of the seasons has brought a wave of exciting new openings in Leeds, writes Jordan Odu.
September was one of the most action-packed months I’ve enjoyed in a while, with some brilliant events taking place, and not just our own. The Leeds Digital Festival was a great chance to mix with fellow creatives from across Yorkshire, whilst getting a fascinating insight into the future of the digital sector.
I returned to Leeds Arena, this time for the annual Yorkshire Property Charitable has been held at the arena and proved it’s the perfect space for any event, not just hosting world famous bands. As well as catching up with some familiar faces, the event raised an impressive sum for the Teenage Cancer Trust.

The new season has ushered in some new stores to the city, just in time for me to refresh my wardrobe. Victoria Leeds has welcomed both Barbour and newcomers Le Labo, who specialise in creating out of this world perfumes and candles. I’m also loving Zara’s new home in Trinity.
Autumn also sees the arrival of some tempting new menus from Ivy Asia and Stuzzi, which both continue to push the envelope with ingenious new dishes. One place I’ve visited several times of late is the brilliant Boojum. I just had to make the most of their limited-edition Hot Honey Chicken Menu, which is a hook-up collab with Cholula Hot Sauce. I tried both the Hot Honey Chicken Burrito and Tacos, and came to the conclusion that they need to be

discusses the need for building creative opportunity in the North.
Fuelled by her own experiences - and successes - artist Natasha Clarke is on a mission to bring Doncaster creatives together through networking and events.
Natasha grew up in Intake and Moorends painting and drawing very therapeutic. But little did she know that she would eventually forge a career down this path.
“I never believed that I could be a professional artist as I didn’t know anyone else who had achieved it or even had a career in the arts or other creative industries,” she recalled. “With zero prior connections, I didn’t even realise this could be a job!”
Natasha’s journey began out of a pure passion and a love for being creative. She describes herself as an extrovert and loves talking so used that to her advantage by getting to know people and create opportunities for herself.
“I knew early on that in order for me to succeed I needed to get my name out there,” she added. “Which is what I did, slowly over time I built a reputation and have been very fortunate.”
Today, Natasha is an acclaimed artist and has participated in countless major projects her work, including large murals, painting, exhibitions and collaborations.
To help other budding artists and creatives - this can be anybody from illustrators and photographers to musicians and poets - Natasha set up Doncaster Creative Network (DCN) in February 2022 to create the same networking opportunities that had been so vital to her success.
“I understood the importance of face-toface interactions to build up connections through networking and nurturing those spaces to promote collaborations,” she said. “I wanted to help the rest of my local creative community by creating similar offerings. I am a strong believer in ‘rising tide lifts all boats’. There is massive opportunity in Doncaster for creatives to band together and collaborate across projects, raising each other up.”
DCN now lists over 100 artists in its directory and hosts regular networking events and a range of offering for creatives like quiz nights, book clubs, meet-ups, artist showcases. From something that initially started as a small Facebook group, Natasha has found the network’s popularity a little surprising.
“A beautiful yet unexpected outcome of DCN is seeing the impact the community makes on young artists and student,” she said. “It gives young people a rare
opportunity to mingle with seasoned professionals, artists who have been selfemployed for decades.
“I feel honoured that I get to witness those small exchanges of conversations, ideas, moments of inspiration and keep in touch with those younger group members to see how their practice grows over time.”
As a result of Natasha’s and the network’s success, last year she was invited to host a TEDx talk in Doncaster, which she titled ‘Art Changed My Life. It Can Change Yours Too’. It was something she really enjoyed - but wouldn’t rush to do again!
“The process was incredible and took months of group workshops, one-to-ones with your coach [Noreen Nasim], writing your speech and even doing a dress
was delivered at CAST in front of a live audience and then recorded and uploaded to the TEDx YouTube page. It was a once-ina-lifetime experience and I am so proud I have been able to tick it off my bucket list at the young age of 24.
“Having said that, although everyone in the TEDx Doncaster team was a delight to work with, it was the scariest thing I’ve ever done and I don’t fancy doing another. I’ll stick to my paintings instead!”
The talk explored the idea of ‘weaving pockets of creativity into your everyday’ believes that everyone creates art even if they don’t know it.
“For example,” she said. “Someone could take a lot of pride in their garden, spending hours potting new plants, pruning and watering, they understand the seasons, what grows when and even think about the layout, where the sun rises and falls. That’s art.
“Many people are naturally creative and make art in their everyday life, however sometimes we are not as conscious and present in the moment as we can be. I want to encourage people to recognise those pockets of creativity and appreciate the joy which it brings and to not be afraid to explore those worlds further. You never know where those passions might take you.”
Following the TEDx talk, and working with Doncaster Council, Natasha hosted a networking event requested by MP Ed Miliband, which had over 70 attendees and was a mix of creative freelancers, council members and cultural leaders.
One of the core values of DCN is to ‘create a safe and welcoming community for a range of creatives’ and Natasha is keen to ensure that it remains completely inclusive and is open to all, regardless of discipline, age or the stage of your career.
Whilst DCN remains very much a network of creatives, future plans include building a physical hub for them that will house a studio and co-working spaces, which will further future collaborations and shared learning.
Natasha has collaborated with many different creatives but cites her favourite
light on some of the challenges they face but also how much can be found in the area.
“I hope that young artists are able to see that they don’t need to move to London in order to be a professional artist,” concluded Natasha. “There are lots of opportunities up north and in South Yorkshire that our talented creatives can tap into.”
And Doncaster Creative Network is there to create these opportunities.

eeds-based Yoga Kula has announced the expansion of its Chapel Allerton studio and the launch of the biggest yoga timetable in the UK for an independent studio.
LLocated on Harrogate Road in the heart of Chapel Allerton in North Leeds, Yoga Kula has doubled in size with a stunning new space across two studios.
The ambitious expansion has allowed the introduction of a brand-new concept featuring two beautifully designed studio spaces - The Yin studio and The Yang studio - which between them offer over 70 classes each week.
The Yin studio is a serene space designed to help members unwind from the stresses of daily life. It’s cocoon-like atmosphere
and a healing salt wall. It’s the perfect environment for gentle practices that
promote deep relaxation.
The studio offers a sanctuary of tranquillity, complete with soothing Yin Yoga, Meditation, and Sound Bath Experiences.
In contrast the Yang studio is a haven for those seeking energy, strength, and vitality, offering a variety of dynamic and heating practices like Hot Yoga, Warm Yin, and Advanced Vinyasa. Designed to Ignite that
it’s perfect for those who love to challenge themselves.
Beyond yoga, Yoga Kula’s new facilities also include dedicated therapy rooms offering a range of holistic treatments such as Ayurvedic Yoga Massage, Reiki, and Cranio-Sacral Therapy.
Founded in 2011 by Angela Sykes, Yoga Kula has grown from humble beginnings to become a cornerstone of the Leeds yoga community. Angela launched the studio after studying yoga in Japan, India, and Sri Lanka. Her experiences, passion and energy inspired others and her classes quickly became hugely popular.
Today, Yoga Kula boasts two locations in Leeds in Chapel Allerton and the Victoria Quarter, offering yoga experiences and one of the most respected yoga teacher training courses in the UK.
To complement the new spaces, Yoga Kula is also adding to its team of world-
class instructors, each handpicked for their expertise and many for their global experience.
These teachers bring a wealth of knowledge, having trained and taught in yoga hotspots around the world, and are
Commenting on the expansion Yoga Kula founder, Angela Sykes, said: “Yoga Kula is more than just a studio – it’s a community. We’ve always been at the forefront of yoga in the UK and now we are taking things even further to offer cutting-edge classes for all Yogis, with every detail designed with wellbeing in mind.
“We have worked tirelessly to create a space where members can experience yoga like never before, as well as offer additional services to complement yoga practice, providing a comprehensive approach to health and well-being. What’s more, our roster of exceptional teachers ensures that every class at Yoga Kula is not only transformative but also rooted in a deep and authentic yoga practice.
“I am extremely proud of the Yoga Kula journey over the last 13 years and can’t wait to reveal our stunning new studios and therapy rooms to new and returning members.”

Richard Abbey meets Rachel Woolford, the Leeds entrepreneur, gym owner and winner of this year’s BBC TV series, The Apprentice.

Having grown up in the Roundhay area, she had set her sights on opening a business in the city suburb from a young age. Rachel realised her dream in August 2020, opening

It’s in the reception area where I meet Rachel, which is also home to a coffee bar, and we spend close to an hour chatting

Rachel attended Gateways and The Grammar School (GSAL) in Leeds before economics. Far from the stereotypical student, Rachel describes her time there as ‘very chilled out’ and it was there that

but after three months left her position to at various gyms in Leeds before settling with the gymwear brand, Sweaty Betty, in Harrogate although opening her own business was always at the back of her mind.
“During that year I gained as much experience as I could and started to build networks,” she recalls. “At the same time I perfect.”
Rachel had also travelled a lot during that time and found inspiration from studios that Angeles. She wanted to bring something born.
Although she didn’t get off to the best of before the Covid pandemic reared its ugly head once again and she had to close for six
“It was a big knock to the business and myself but I always knew we would reopen,” she tells me. “I was asked if I
regretted opening at that time and I said ‘absolutely not’, it’s the best thing I ever did.”
Despite this challenging time, Rachel covered her costs and spent time building a community so that when she reopened she could hit the ground running. This she did, and such was the gym’s success that she added a second location in Harrogate in 2023.

“By chance I’d been out for lunch in Harrogate and seen the location up for a really decent rent. I walked in and had the same feeling, it was perfect. Within less than a year, I was up and running.”
It was while working on the Harrogate location, and during a delay, that Rachel decided to apply for The Apprentice.
“I have watched The Apprentice since I was younger and applied really spontaneously, there was no plan,” she says matter-of-factly. “It’s a pretty big
application process, bigger than what I thought it would be, but I now understand why because it’s a pretty big commitment to the person that does end up winning.”
Rachel moved to London at the start of last year with the show taking nine weeks until February of this year. It was only the second time she had been away from home for an extended period of time – the other being university – and was the part of the

“It somehow got back to Lord Sugar that I was struggling a little bit and he brought it up in the boardroom. But it ended up being a real positive.”
One thing Rachel loved about the show – apart from winning – was the tasks, particularly those that were peopleorientated. She cites the Formula-E task as her favourite, where she negotiated sponsorship deals, and regularly put herself forward to pitch to clients. Even
the dreaded interviews rated highly with Rachel.
“It was a tough day but such a privilege to have these people pull your business apart,” she remembers. “On the TV show you see two minutes of each conversation but they each lasted 30-45 minutes and I had some amazing conversations.
“Linda, who is from Leeds, was very supportive and Claudine was amazing with me, she really made me feel at ease and tried to get to know me as a person and not

Leeds Playhouse has announced a chilling new production of Animal Farm to mark the 80th anniversary of the iconic fable.
A Leeds Playhouse and Stratford East co-production in association with Nottingham Playhouse, this dark, contemporary retelling of Orwell’s classic transferring to the Quarry Theatre at Leeds Playhouse from 12-29 March 2025.
Adapted by Tatty Hennessy, this chilling and thoughtprovoking story of treachery and rebellion provides a timely reminder of the perils of unchecked power.
Amy Leach, Deputy Artistic Director at Leeds Playhouse, said: “I can’t wait to explore Orwell’s timeless fable and to expand on his multi-layered text to delve deeper into themes that relate to the world we live in now, to the challenges we face when

Rotherham Show, the biggest free cultural festival brought to you by Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council, returned to Clifton Park on Saturday 7 and Sunday 8 September.
“The service we received from DKD was exceptional. Mary designed our kitchen-diner knock through and she was so patient when we tried various different designs. That said her experience showed as we reverted back to one of her originals. As the work started Lauren took over and I can honestly say I have never met someone who works harder to please. Nothing is too much trouble and she provided the best customer service I have ever had.
Mount Renovations completed the building works and the guys on site were tidy, respectful and frankly fun to have around. Even though the build was completed a couple of month ago they recently returned to sort a couple of snags. Sarah in the office runs a tight ship (I’ve seen the electronic planner) and there was always someone on site working on the renovation.
Now the kitchen itself is perfect and nothing was too much trouble for the kitchen fitter Julian. The units are high quality and there is nothing I would change in terms of design/ layout, we just need to add all the finishing touches. We now spend so much time in our beautiful kitchen and I’ve even got the kids baking and washing up. A win all round.
Finally, the entire work wasn’t without a few complications, but they were minor and addressed immediately. The sign of a good quality company and I am so pleased we went with DKD (trust me we did our research of the alternatives). Thanks so much to everyone involved.”

Lesser known than the Cinque Terre but equally beautiful, Pete Thompson marvels at the northern Italian delights of Porto Venere.
he Ligurian Sea glistens under a clear blue sky as I admire a view of the colourful historic village of Porto Venere.
TI could not wish for a better vantage point to marvel at such a beautiful coastline across the calm turquoise water following a leisurely walk on Palmaria Island.
Nestled away in the Italian Riveira, near the border of Tuscany and Liguria, Porto Venere tends to be overlooked by the
nearby Cinque Terre.
I soon discovered they are missing out on a picturesque haven in a bay that was dubbed the ‘Gulf of Poets’ – due to the literary legends who drew inspiration from these shores.
Lord Byron, D.H. Lawrence, Percy Bysshe Shelley and George Sand were among the esteemed creative greats who found this stunning part of the world so alluring.
As I gaze out to where Lord Byron braved tempestuous waters to swim across the bay from Porto Venere to visit Shelley in the village of San Terenzo so many years ago, the welcome sight of a boat arriving at Palmaria Island captures my attention.
And before I know it, I am being treated like a nobleman after stepping on board for a tour around the bay with Associazione per il mare.
Prior to our voyage, sumptuous fresh oysters were served up along with mouthwatering mussels and pasta that had been cooked at the front of the vessel.
on a glorious day in an idyllic setting for lunch as we bobbed gently on the water –
lapping up the exquisite scenery and bright sunshine.
We were then treated to a cruise past the striking mix of brightly coloured houses in Porto Venere’s charming harbour, just of Saint Peter – which was transformed of Christianity and is a spectacular sight perched above the rocks by the sea.
Back on dry land, I meander through the narrow, winding cobbled backstreets, marvelling at ancient architectural wonders such as the Doria Castle – built around 1160 – and taking in jaw-dropping vistas in a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
And all this just a stone’s throw from the Grand Hotel Portovenere – which very much lived up to its name during my magical stay.
Originally a 17th-century convent, the marina and the old town and is just a short boat or train journey away from the Cinque Terre.
I could never tire of the captivating views from the balcony of my room, or the smiles of the welcoming hotel staff who worked so meticulously throughout my visit.
There is a lovely laid-back feel in the hotel’s Palmaria Restaurant, where I sampled moreish freshly-baked focaccia, scrumptious pumpkin gnocchi and luscious octopus dishes.
day by clocking up the miles on the nearby scenic coastal hiking trails of the Cinque Terre – which we reached by train, as the choppy sea prevented us from taking the boat.
picture-postcard villages - Monterosso, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola and Riomaggiore – along a rugged coastline and you are certainly rewarded for stretching your legs.
I can be guilty of turning a walk into a
this adventure after starting out from Monterosso as I took in the splendour of sharp cliffs overlooking the crystal-clear sea, small coves and an array of yellow, pink, green and orange homes.
It was only right that we raised a glass walk and a trip to the Possa Winery in Riomaggiore ended our excursion on another high note.
Heydi Bonanini spoke with passion high on the hillside as he showed us where 11 generations of his family have farmed land on steep terrain, producing top class wines that have won awards at home and overseas.
We sampled some of the fruits of his labour in an atmosphere tasting room, whetting the appetite for further Ligurian delights back in Porto Venere.
And sure enough I was in for another treat at the 3 Torri restaurant, where the seafood special was a shrewd selection as I sampled the very best of the local cuisine.
Porto Venere has been dubbed the Cinque Terre’s ‘sixth town’, but with natural beauty including quiet coves such ‘as Byron’s Grotto’ you can see why the great poet retreated here to escape the crowds.
