elcome to the September edition of Eastside. This month we look ahead to the St Leger Festival, which is set to be a wholly different affair. Robert Plumbridge previews the big race, which takes place on Saturday 12 September. There’s speculation that some spectators could be allowed inside the racecourse but if not, why not host your own themed party at home? We’ve got some expert advice and also found someone who’s done it all before. Eating out is back on the agenda and we also look at up to date fashion, beauty and stylish additions for the home and garden. We indulge ourselves with some luxury chocolates, which would make the perfect gift if you’re getting married, which will probably be next year – there are some great local businesses on hand to give you advice. Enjoy the rest of your summer and we’ll see you next month.

Looking for a change in lifestyle? Why your outside space might hold the answer…

BY SARAH MURCH, A LANDSCAPE DESIGNER AND NATURAL POOL SPECIALIST, WHO, TOGETHER WITH HER HUSBAND WILL, ARE THE OWNERS/FOUNDERS OF ELLICAR GARDENS AT GRINGLEY ON THE HILL, NOTTINGHAMSHIRE. itting on the deck beside our natural pool with a backdrop of birdsong and bubbling water, already I feel relaxed after a long, busy day. A gentle breeze sends ripples of light across the pool’s surface, a charm of goldfinch splash beside the jetty, and a starling flies down to the beach for a drink. I’ve appreciated our gardens and natural pool more than ever this year – they’ve seen me through the toughest of times. I realise I’m fortunate to enjoy acres of space, but as a landscape designer, I know any outside space can be turned into the perfect place to kickstart and enjoy that longed-for lifestyle.

S

Breathe new life into your outside space Almost everyone wants to enjoy more outdoor living, and many are opting for staycations. There’s a trend for taking the workplace outside too, with garden offices. So your garden needs to do more than look beautiful. That’s why my landscape designs are functional too and fit with your way of living. Thoughtful design can breathe new life into your outside space to give you the lifestyle you’ve been looking for. And if you want to truly embrace a different pace of life, it might be time to think about investing in a natural pool too.

Water is the perfect backdrop to year-round outdoor living Still reflective waters, mesmerising ripples and gentle waves that soothe the soul. The perfect setting for picnics, parties, family get-togethers, and glorious afternoon gatherings with friends. 14 Eastside | www.eastsidemag.co.uk

A natural pool becomes the focus of family life and blends into your garden

An antidote to modern life Imagine sliding into crystal clear, chemical-free water and feeling it gently wash away the day’s stress.Your mood lifts, you’re relaxed and rejuvenated ready to enjoy the remains of the day. Or simply sit. Watch the wildlife and listen to the birdsong. Feel your shoulders loosen and thoughts slow as you unwind beside the water.

Get closer to nature Swallows dip and dragonflies dart alongside you – it’s like wild swimming in your own garden. Watch bats hunting over the water while you soak up the last rays of sunlight. See the children splash with excitement as they don their masks and snorkels to discover the incredible giant aquarium of pond life that lives hidden away amongst the water plants.

Did you know? You can enjoy the benefits of chemical-free swimming without plants. While natural pools are filtered and purified by water plants, living pools are plant-free yet still with zero chemicals. They can be indoors or outside and heated to 30ºC. hinking about a natural pool prompts many questions! Here are some of the most frequently asked – if your question isn’t answered, I’m always happy to have a chat.

T

Do I need a big garden to have a natural pool?

Not at all. They start from 40m2 and go up to swimming lake size. If space is at a premium, hybrid pools are ideal. They combine the filtration of a living pool with the beauty of water plants, so you have maximum space for swimming. Can I have a natural pool if I live in a listed property?

Absolutely, the ecological benefits often make it easier to get planning permission over a conventional pool. Plus, no unsightly blue rectangle! A natural pool blends seamlessly into your garden.

Are they suitable for children?

Whether your priority is family fun, swimming lengths or a bit of both, your pool will be practical and fun for everyone. We can incorporate boulders, jetties, steppingstones, play beaches and more. Fountains and water boulders make it more lively, and lighting means you can enjoy it after dark too.

Where can I visit a natural pool?

and in summer you can expect temperatures between 20ºC and 24ºC. Living pools can be heated to 28ºC all year with a heat pump. How does the water stay balanced and clean? Play beach is perfect for young children

I prefer a contemporary style, is that possible?

Yes! Whether you want a naturalistic retreat, a contemporary pool or a fussfree plunge pool, we specialise in designing a pool to fit your taste and lifestyle. Are natural pools expensive to run?

Definitely not. The water warms up quickly with natural solar gain. That means no heating costs, low energy requirements and a longer swimming season. They’re low maintenance and easy to look after too, only requiring a professional service once a year. How warm is the water?

The water heats up quickly in spring,

Block party BRING BAUHAUS DESIGN – AND BALANCE – INTO YOUR HOME. Bauhaus originated as a German school of arts in the early part of the 20th century. Founded by Walter Gropius, the school eventually morphed into its own modern art movement characterised by its unique approach to architecture and design. Today, Bauhaus is renowned for both its unique aesthetic that inventively combines the fine arts with arts and crafts as well as its enduring influence on modern and contemporary art. Architecturally, it is characterised by harmoniously balanced geometric shapes and an emphasis on function. Bauhaus, and its principles, has now made its way into the interior world with geometric shapes, block designs and pops of colour appearing in our homes.

Putting customers first THE SHOE ROOM ARE TAKING STEPS TO ENSURE THEIR CUSTOMERS FEEL SAFE AND CONFIDENT VISITING THEIR DONCASTER STORE. t’s taking time, understandably, for confidence to return to the high street. Let’s be honest, after spending weeks indoors, shopping infrequently and more than likely online, suddenly being able to go about your usual routine is a huge shift for many. The Shoe Room, Doncaster’s finest shoe store, is putting its customers first by making them feel as comfortable and as safe as possible on any visit to their Priory Walk outlet. In fact, they’re going the extra mile by offering out of hours, private appointments for anyone who doesn’t feel entirely comfortable returning to an increasingly busier town centre. The appointments can be booked in advance and are available any evening and on Sundays too. So why choose The Shoe Room? Well, amongst others they stock the latest trends from famous English shoemakers including Loake, Barker, Tricker’s and Cheaney, with everything in store being of the highest quality, expertly designed and produced by skilled craftsmen. “Our range is second to none,” said owners Richard and Michelle. “We actually stock ten different brands and have around 250 shoe and boot options on display in store. No-one else has this kind of range and quality under one roof.”

I

When you shop at The Shoe Room, you can rest assured your shoes will be long-lasting, comfortable and will definitely stand out from the crowd. Richard and Michelle are always on hand to help find the perfect pair for you. An enhanced customer experience is at the heart of everything they do. Such is The Shoe Room’s reputation, they were voted ‘Men’s Independent Retailer of the Year’ at the Footwear Industry Awards in February, which is not only great news for the shop but great news for Doncaster too. Richard and Michelle

attended the ceremony at Birmingham’s National Conference Centre and were honoured to receive the award. “We’re considered by our peers and suppliers to be one of the best shoe retailers in the UK but to get this award was just fantastic,” added Richard and Michelle. To complement the footwear,The Shoe Room also have a select range of clothing on offer from R.M Williams, and a great collection of leather goods and accessories from several of the brands they work with. The Shoe Room are also the area’s only stockists of Australian brand RMWilliams and the highly acclaimed lifestyle brand Fairfax & Favor, which includes a fantastic range of women’s boots, shoes, loafers and a stunning selection of handcrafted bags. The return of Love Island WANT TO TAKE YOUR WEDDING OUTSIDE? Rudding House has a number of licensed rooms for civil ceremonies with views or access onto the extensive gardens. With a chapel perfect for wedding blessings, innovative menus and exceptional service Rudding Park is the natural choice. Of course, every couple wants something different for their wedding day whether it’s a contemporary or traditional feel. If you’d like to explore Rudding Park further, you’ll find, amongst other things, top class accommodation and spa. Its 90 bedrooms and suites are contemporary in design and don’t sacrifice on comfort or luxury. You can relax in a rolltop bath with Molton Brown products and if you want to make the most of the outdoors – something we all suddenly seem to crave – opt for a room or suite which offers a terrace or a balcony. Guest receive complimentary access to the indoor swimming pool, juniper log sauna and bucket shower, but why stop there? An upgrade to the Roof Top Spa and Garden (did I mention it’s the first in the UK and has won many awards) is a ‘must’, but more on that later. Whether you are a couple or family – there is a perfect room for you. Family rooms offer privacy and independence, Spa Rooms feature a steam room, sauna or spa bath (of course they do!) so you can enjoy the spa experience in the privacy of your own room, whilst the suites include Roof Top Spa access and their own steam room. Whilst the hotel is well-known and has an enviable reputation, one of the best kept secrets is that Rudding Park also has a number of five-star cottages. Like the hotel, the cottages are beautifully designed, combining style and comfort for those looking for short breaks, or a long let for those looking to relocate. You can also choose to stay in a luxury lodge, complete with hot tub. And just when you think it can’t possibly get any better, the luxury lodge are also available to buy as holiday homes. Rudding Park Spa restores Harrogate’s spa heritage using

natural spring water from the grounds at Rudding Park. It’s Roof Top Spa and Garden was the first in the UK and there really is nowhere quite like it – described as a ‘social space offering hydrotherapy and thermal experiences’, you can relax in the warming waters of the hydrotherapy pool, or spa bath, or perhaps we’ll find you in the luxury steam room, panoramic sauna, sunlight therapy room, oxygen pod, cabana or simply relaxing on a lounger on the sun deck. The Escape Zone offers a serene space where guests can choose from an extensive list of treatments whether looking to ease tension with a massage, revitalise their skin with a facial or invigorate the with a body wrap. Guests can also explore the audio, mind, visual and sleep zones. Complimentary skincare workshops are also available and provide a fantastic opportunity to learn tricks of the trade. For those looking to maintain their beauty routine, check out the Nail and Beauty Studio or Westrow Hair Studio at Rudding Park to complete your look from top to toe. To ensure social distancing capacities are reduced – it’s the perfect time to experience Rudding Park Spa. Spa Days and Starlight Spa nights include treatments – or you could opt for the Roof Top Spa Experiences if you simply want to make the most of this space. If you really want to escape and don’t want to travel too far, Rudding Park has to make the list. Opt for an overnight stay and the Sleeping Beauty Spa Break. Top Tip, book in September and make the most of the Limited Edition Suite Luxury Sleeping Beauty Spa Break where, if you book a Spa Room or Suite, you will also receive a Molton Brown ‘London via Yorkshire’ Rhubarb and Rose Gift Set and a bottle of Taittinger Brut Réserve.

A festival like no other ROBERT PLUMBRIDGE LOOKS AHEAD TO THIS YEAR’S ST LEGER FESTIVAL – THE RUNNERS, THE RIDERS AND WHETHER SPECATORS COULD POTENTIALLY MAKE A RETURN. acing, like all industries, has felt the tremendous impact of the Covid-19 pandemic across the board. For trainers, owners, stable staff, jockeys and numerous others, the sport’s closure at the height of the crisis saw loss of earnings and livelihood for many. There was also the matter of 15,000 or so racehorses needing the continuation of the superb care they receive day-in day-out. Racing, to its credit, was one of the first sports given the green light to get back behind closed doors. Strict protocols were put in place, such as social distancing, racecourse screenings, PPE for all participants and officers at courses to ensure it is all adhered to. By and large it has all gone relatively smoothly over the past two months and with Government restrictions eased across other industries thoughts have turned to when racecourses will see muchneeded crowds returning. This is a vital step for racecourses, many of whom are hugely reliant on crowds through the gates to survive. Doncaster is no different and the St Leger meeting is the biggest crowd-puller of the year. Therefore the racecourse is looking to become the first big meeting to be a ‘test next stage’ where they would allow a crowd on each day of the meeting, albeit a much smaller one than that of a normal year. Plans for 5,000 spectators at Goodwood were scrapped at the last minute due to Boris Johnson postponing the easing of restrictions. Doncaster, however, is hopeful that by 9 September there will be a good chance to try crowds coming in again. Mark Spincer, managing director of their operating company’s racing division, said: “I will be putting forward that Doncaster becomes the next pilot. We’ll do all we can and work with all the representative bodies to have the chance to have the next trial.” This would be a huge boost to the local economy and a positive step to getting racing back to normality, with racegoers getting to enjoy the sport live once again. Whether the St Leger is run behind closed doors or not, it is sure to go ahead. Read on as we look at some of the leading contenders to win the world’s oldest classic.

It could be a while before we see crowds like this at Doncaster Racecourse

Could it be Love in the St Leger? The Doncaster St Leger makes up part of the five British Classic Flat Races – traditionally the biggest and most prestigious races in the UK racing calendar. Established in 1776 by Anthony St Leger and first run on Town Moor in 1778, it is also the oldest. The race is for three-year-old horses only, and is run over a distance of 1 mile and 6 furlongs making it the longest. It is therefore a unique test of both speed and stamina, one which many of the contenders will not have faced in their short careers. Like most years, this season’s St Leger looks to have a wideopen look to it, with many trainers yet to decide which of their runners will head for the prestigious Group 1 contest. We’ve broken down some of the potential stars who could be challenging on Saturday 12 September.

Aidan O’Brien’s Love

Aidan O’Brien’s triple threat Since the turn of the century, two trainers have dominated British Flat Racing – Aidan O’Brien and John Gosden. Between them they have won ten renewals of the St Leger since 2000. Ireland’s top trainer Aidan, from the powerhouse Ballydoyle operation, looks sure to saddle this year’s favourite with three top contenders potentially ready to line up. Top of the list is Love. Should she line up she’d be in line to win the tough feat of the Fillies’ Triple Crown (1000 Guineas, Epsom Oaks and St Leger) having won the first of those two races in style. She has developed into one of the most exciting and talented horses around this season, impressively winning the 1000 Guineas before blowing the field apart at Epsom in the Oaks. > Continued on the next page Eastside | www.eastsidemag.co.uk 37

That was against top-class opposition from her own sex. The St Leger would provide a new challenge and see her pitted against the boys. There would be no doubt however that she would start as a red-hot favourite. She would certainly be the most likely winner of the race, but doubts remain as to whether she is sure to line up. A trip to the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe has been mooted by connections and is the likely main target for her. Santiago would be next on the list for this trainer. He announced his name as a horse out of the top drawer at Royal Ascot, blitzing the field in tough conditions in the Queens Vase in a style of horse sure to appreciate the longer distance that the St Leger offers. He was slightly disappointing last time at Goodwood – however that was against a superstar in the form of Stradivarius, so lost little in defeat there. Then the master trainer has the option of Mogul. He bounced back from a disappointing run in the Epsom Derby with a hard-fought victory against good opposition at Goodwood last time. The manner of which looked like a horse that would relish the optimum at Doncaster and would see him best to effect. It will be interesting to see which of the three Aidan will pick to run in September, but he is sure to have at least one lining up.

English King for the crown? Up-and-coming trainer Ed Walker is looking to get stable star English King’s season back on track. He looked like a real

prospect when he won with consummate ease in a Derby trial at Lingfield. However, since then he failed to get into the race when favourite in the Derby in July, and was similarly disappointing in calmer waters last time out at Goodwood, a race which was won by Mogul who also could line up against him at Doncaster. Trainer Walker will now make a decision whether to take his charge up north from Lambourn to Doncaster, or across the channel for a raid in France. After the race at Goodwood,Walker said: “He’s come out of Goodwood great. We were disappointed but it was a funny old race again, and he just didn’t come down the hill well at all. “We want to get him back on a flatter track again and we’ve not yet decided whether it’ll be the St Leger or the Grand Prix de Paris at Deauville. “He’ll go straight to one of those.”

The Leger to stay in Yorkshire? A local winner is always appreciated at Doncaster and no Yorkshire operation is better equipped this year than Britain’s winning-most trainer Mark Johnston. He has suggested that his impressive Hamilton winner Subjectivist could be in line for a tilt at a first Group 1 this year. He is a half brother to last year’s runner up Sir Ron Priestley, and is now rated higher than he was at this stage of his career. Johnston in no stranger to winning a Classic either, having won both the 2000 and 1000 Guineas in an illustrious career.

Record breaker... Last year’s winner, Logician. Ridden by Frankie Dettori

Legends of the St Leger – a timeline 1776 – The St Leger is first devised by Anthony St Leger, an army officer and politician who lived near the town. It was originally run over 2 miles and known as the ‘Sweepstake for 25 Guineas’. The first running, on 24 September 1776, was won by a filly called Allabaculia, was owned by the event’s organiser, the 2nd Marquess of Rockingham. 1800 – The race gains national recognition when the aptly named winner, Champion, became the first horse to register a win in both the Epsom Derby and St Leger. 1853 – West Australia becomes the first horse to win the Triple Crown – a horse winning the 2000 Guineas, Epsom Derby and St Leger in their three-year-old year. 1939-1945 – Due to the outbreak of the war the race is cancelled in 1939. It then took place at Thirsk, Manchester, Newmarket and York during the war years. 1970 – Perhaps the most famous post-war winner of the

race Nijinsky triumphs on Town Moor to write his name in history as a Triple Crown winner. A feat that has not been repeated since. He was ridden by the legendary Lester Piggott and trained by Vincent O’Brien. 1982 – Oh So Sharp becomes the first filly in modern times to win the Fillies’ Triple Crown, having won the 1000 Guineas and Epsom Oaks earlier that year. Trained by the late, great Sir Henry Cecil, she is considered one of the best fillies in the modern era. 2015 – The 2015 race is initially awarded to Bondi Beach after the first-placed Simple Verse was disqualified, but the decision gets reversed on 23 September 2015 after an appeal by Simple Verse’s connections. 2019 – Logician wins the race for the legendary trainer/jockey partnership John Gosden and Frankie Dettori. Not only does he win the race he does so in a record time of 3 mins 0.27 seconds.

Don’t miss the action WITH SPECTATORS UNLIKELY TO BE ABLE TO ATTEND THIS MONTH’S ST LEGER FESTIVAL, WHY NOT BRING THE RACING HOME, AND HOST YOUR OWN PARTY? he St Leger, the world’s oldest classic, will be very different this year. The four-day festival, which will take place between 9 and 12 September, will offer the same top-level racing but with one thing missing – spectators. Usually such a big part of the festivities, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, spectators will be absent from this year’s event, which begs the question, how can you enjoy all the fun of a day at the races without actually being there? The answer? Host your own St Leger party at home. Had you already bought the outfit in preparation for Ladies Day? Don’t worry, dress up in your finest, pop some Champagne corks and invite some friends round for a socially distanced celebration. If the sun is shining, a garden party is just the ticket. We have ideas for food, for drink, how you can watch that all-important action and more.

Food

Once you’ve sorted out the food you can turn your attention to keeping your guests lubricated. Of course, what you’re serving to eat might dictate what you give your invitees to drink; cans of cold lager probably won’t sit well with a threecourse dinner but would pair well with slices of fresh pizza, for example. Chances are you’ll need a selection of beers, wines, spirits and, of course, champagne to celebrate all those winners. If you’re thinking of bringing in some outside help, Yorkshire Bartender (01347 811936) has a range of bars and equipment to suit all sizes of celebration. All their menus feature a selection of high quality cocktails, liquors, wines, draught beer and ales, all at affordable drinks prices. Also included is all bar equipment, including cocktail shakers, beer pumps, straws; a wide range of high quality glassware and experienced bartenders to run your bar smoothly.Visit www.yorkshirebartender.co.uk to find out more. Is there a better drink pairing for a garden party than gin and tonic? The Gin Wagon is a 1974 Bedford horsebox, which has been lovingly converted into a mobile bar. They always stock a range of at least 20 gins, all of which are served with The Gin Wagon appropriate garnish and your choice of Fever-Tree tonic. Other spirits, Prosecco, wines, beers and non-alcoholic drinks can also be provided, along with their gins.Visit www.ginwagon.com to find out more.

Food will be at the centrepiece of any daytime celebration and whether you cater it yourself, or get some outside help, the choices are endless. For more formal celebrations you might opt for a sit-down, three-course meal complete with classic white tablecloths and silver service. For something less formal, a hot and cold buffet covers all bases as well as different dietary requirements whilst serving afternoon tea offers a touch of class. If you decided to bring in outside caters, The Greedy Greek Deli Direct (0114 266 7719) can cater for any size party. The expert view EVENTS SPECIALISTS YOU & US PRESENT THE ULTIMATE GUIDE TO HOSTING A ST LEGER-THEMED PARTY AT HOME. ho doesn’t like a day at the races? Glamorous outfits, Champagne on ice and horses on display, these events have a wide appeal. Yorkshire’s classic St Leger Festival is the highlight of the British horse racing calendar and attracts thousands of visitors each year. Sadly, with no spectators allowed this year, we’ve had to get more creative to keep the tradition alive. Just because you can’t attend the live event, doesn’t mean you should miss out on all the fun! We have put together a few tips to help you plan your very own St Leger Festival at home.

classics, such as mint julep or refreshing Pimm’s. Alternatively, you could set up a cocktail making station with all the ingredients and garnishes for your guests to get creative. You should also serve other beverages, like champagne, beer, wine and soft drinks, to cater to different tastes. With all the alcohol flowing, you will want to make sure there is plenty of food to go by too. Think a light and fresh cocktail party style menu with lots of

The Dress Code To make your virtual St Leger Festival feel more authentic, dress to impress. Follow the event dress code, for the ladies smart attire and a head-piece and for the gentleman suit and tie. Remember, no trainers, jeans or sportswear are allowed! Decor Create a racing day atmosphere with some elegant decor. Consider flower arrangements, lanterns and festoon lights. You can also add some fun feel with bunting. Some iconic elements, such as horseshoes, riding cups and jockey outfits, will add final touches to the decor. You can incorporate these using images, prints and props. When it comes to the colour palette, incorporate some bright colours that you see worn by the jockeys and pair it with the elegance of black or white. However, remember when it comes to bright colours, less is more! Food & Drink Cocktails are a staple of the horse racing events. Put your cocktail making skills to the test and wow your guests with some

flavour. Bite-size canapes or, our favourite, grazing boards would work a treat. Alternatively, you could throw an afternoon tea party to bring a touch of sophistication to the event. If you want to keep your catering Covidproof, local caterers will be able to offer individually packed party food and drink bags that can be tailored to your event theme. Entertainment Watching the races will be the highlight of your event so make sure you have a good method for broadcasting them live. A big cinema style screen would really bring the atmosphere into the room or your garden.

High stakes It wouldn’t be a day at the races without a little gambling. Pull out the sweepstakes. You could choose to allocate horses at random, pick names out of the hat or let everyone pick their favourites. Everyone can chip in some money and first, second and third take a prize! You could also host a St Leger-themed quiz. Pick one person to be the quiz master. Then test your guests’ knowledge on racing history for the chance to be named the St Ledger quiz master 2020. And to keep things competitive, why not run a Best Dressed competition. What will motivate your guests more to get their finest fashion on, if not the chance to win some fabulous prizes. If you have a big garden and want to add a fun element to your event, you could hire an inflatable “St Leger’’ horse race. This game is exactly like being on a giant space hopper; the challenge is to ride the horse and make your way to the finish line without falling off your horse. It will provide great fun for all ages. Hopefully this provided you some inspiration to kick-start your party planning. Been there, done that... Lee Ashmore and his wife Sarah go to Royal Ascot every year and have done for the last 12 years or so. Until this year. Not wanting to miss out, Lee decided to host his own Royal Ascot party at home, inviting ten guests for a socially distant celebration. He bought a marquee, which was erected in his front garden, and borrowed tables and chairs from his dad’s café, which was closed whilst a TV was set up in the garden to catch all the racing action. Guests arrived from 10.30am, suitably attired, for a champagne reception. Sarah prepared a five-course meal of tomato soup and crusty bread, slow cooked beef shin in red wine, lemon meringue pie, cheese board and coffee. This was followed by afternoon tea later in the day. Lee’s daughter, Charlie, became the waitress for the day. “It took a day to set up and half a day to clear away but it was really good so we’re going to do it all again for the Ebor and St Leger meetings,” said Lee. Looks like they had a great time.

JAZZ BAR & GRILL UPSTAIRS “I’m Chintana, most people know me as Ton. I grew up in a village not far from the city of Ratchuburi in Thailand. I started cooking at a young age and used to cook for all my family. Mai Dang was my first restaurant I opened when I was 18 years old. Six Years later, I met my husband and we decided to start a family in Doncaster. Then this gave me the opportunity to open the first Thai Restaurant in Doncaster, The Bangkok Thai Restaurant. Ten years of running a successful business, we wanted to expand and we decided to open the Bangkok Royal Elephant. Now we’re starting a new chapter by opening the only Thai Restaurant in Doncaster, Thai At The Sal.”

EATING OUT

All that jazz A TRIP TO THIS NEW DONCASTER VENUE IS MUSIC TO RICHARD ABBEY’S EARS. n terms of location, owner Sarah Pinkerton couldn’t have picked a better one for the Jazz Café. Housed in a two-storey building at the bottom of Printing Office Street it’s in the heart of Doncaster’s busiest shopping thoroughfares, just a stone’s throw from the Frenchgate Centre and St Sepulchre Gate. The café and deli, liveried in classy grey and gold, has plenty of room for outdoor seating with pull-out awnings if the weather takes a turn for the worse. Inside you’ll find a deli counter and coffee bar on the ground floor; upstairs there’s a large restaurant space and bar. Doncaster-born Sarah has spent the majority of her working life in the hospitality and pub industry, largely working in London and Essex. Retirement brought her ‘home’ and the opportunity to open a jazz-themed café proved too good to turn down. She took ownership of the building in February only to find her initial plans curtailed by the Covid pandemic. On the plus side, it gave her time to get the venue just right and ready for opening in July. The décor very much follows a shabby chic theme. From the scaffold-boarded walls to the mis-matched furniture, everything you find in the building has been reclaimed or sourced from vintage or antique emporiums. Paired with striking red and teal walls, it echoes a French bistro vibe. Throw in a few wine bottles dripping with candlewax and you get the picture. I liked it. The Jazz Café wouldn’t live up to its name without any live music but due to current restrictions this will have to come at a later date, something that jazz aficionado Sarah is particularly looking forward to. As a compromise, she has live-streamed performances from local bands including The Bowkers. As an all day venue – food is served 8am-5pm Monday to Wednesday, 8am9pm Thursday to Saturday and 10am2pm on Sundays – the menu is wide ranging, with everything from breakfast and brunch in the morning to sandwiches, salads and wraps for lunch and flatbreads and gourmet burgers in the evening. The aforementioned

downstairs deli counter had a delicious selection of homemade cakes, many of which are gluten-free or vegan-friendly. We arrived on a sunny Friday evening, children in tow, to try one of the Jazz Café’s specialities – raclette (£9.50pp). For the uninitiated, raclette is a Swiss cheese that is melted at the table and paired with everything from potatoes to pickles. Our raclette grill was already waiting for us as we were seated at our upstairs table, hot and enticing. Circular in shape, it had six individual ‘trays’ – if that’s the right word – in which to place different types of cheese to be melted under the grill as well as a hot plate on top. Once served with drinks – bottled beers for my wife and I (£3.65), pressed juices for my children (£2.50) – Sarah brought over a wooden platter of delights to use with the raclette. It included halloumi, cheddar and gouda cheese to be melted under the grill as well as peppers, onions and mushrooms which could be cooked on top. Once melted, the cheese could be drizzled over chunks of bread, garlic butter and olive oil or slices of prosciutto, chorizo, salami and German sausage. A heap of watercress added a bit of freshness to the dish. It was a really fun way to start a meal and great for sharing. Just note, the raclette must be pre-booked and is for a minimum of two people.

For main course my children shared a pepperoni flatbread pizza (£8.50) while my wife opted for a cheeseburger (£7.25), which was served with proper, chunky chips and coleslaw. I turned to the specials menu for inspiration, choosing a garlic chicken breast served with gremolata, chips and salad (£8.25). My children finished with one of Sarah’s homemade gluten-free chocolate brownies (£4.55) as well Instagramworthy vanilla and chocolate milkshakes (£2.25) – another Jazz Café speciality and something that are already proving extremely popular. They were pretty as a picture and tasted every bit as good too. An espresso (£1.99) was enough for me. With good food, lovely, friendly staff and great value for money, the Jazz Café is a real friend. Throw in some live music and it should be onto a winner. Thai delight AFTER BEING CROWNED DOUBLE WINNERS AT LAST YEAR’S EASTSIDE RESTAURANT AWARDS, EXPECATIONS WERE HIGH ON RICHARD ABBEY’S VISIT TO THAI AT THE SAL. e’ll miss this year’s Eastside Restaurant Awards. The annual event, held in October, has been a big hit on the Doncaster and South Yorkshire social scene since it started in 2013. Last year’s event was no exception and saw over 150 people pack into The Hilton Garden Inn at Doncaster Racecourse, resplendent in their black tie or dazzling evening gowns. In total, thirteen awards were given out on the

night and all were worthy winners, none more so than Thai at the Sal who were crowned Eastside’s Restaurant of the Year and Best of Asia restaurant. “This was our third year at the Eastside Restaurant Awards, and we are so proud (and shocked) to have been recognised for all our hard work over the last three years and beyond,” said owner Chintana ‘Ton’ Wilsdon, who runs the pub and restaurant with her husband Graham and son Josh. “We’ve been busy expanding, working on our menu and introducing – and are still introducing – new concepts and we just want to say the biggest thank to you to our amazing customers, team and the readers of Eastside magazine because we would not be here without you. “It’s been a long journey getting to where we are now and it’s genuinely so special that we’re able to celebrate alongside our full team and the many

restaurants, bars and businesses that make Doncaster’s culinary scene the wonderfully vibrant mix that is.” Thai at the Sal is a slightly unorthodox venue – a totally authentic Thai restaurant on top of a traditional English pub – but it wowed our judges with its relaxed setting, attentive, friendly service and a fabulous menu packed with delicious gastronomic delights. Suffice to say the bar had been set quite high for the evening of our visit. The Salutation pub on South Parade is in touching distance of the town centre and is a popular place to start a night out as was evident on the evening of our visit, which was a balmy, late summer Friday night. The pub, and upstairs restaurant, are adhering to all government guidelines relating to Covid19 and after leaving our contact details with a hostess on entry, we were shown upstairs to the charming restaurant space.

EATING OUT

We were greeted by a well-stocked bar – gin’s a big thing here – complemented by tall tables and seating and a cosy alcove to the right. There’s a smaller dining area to the left which leads into a larger room, which was already busy when we arrived for our 6.30 reservation. We took a tall table by the window, grateful for the gentle breeze after a week of temperatures topping 30 degrees in the run up to our visit. An ice-cold Asahi beer and Brockman’s gin and tonic set the summer mood nicely. Thai restaurant menus can often be a little daunting so we find that a sharing platter is a good way to start; Thai at the Sal’s Bangkok Platter (£11.95) didn’t disappoint. Crispy prawn crackers, packed vegetable spring rolls, spicy Thai fish cakes and chicken satay were delicately flavoured and delicious. We particularly liked the ‘tung tong’ (money bags) – deep-fried bags filled with marinated minced pork. The platter was served with a selection of three dips,

satay, sweet chilli and a fishcake sauce. Ton comes from the central Thailand city of Ratchaburi and I was keen to try one of her curries. The massaman (£12.95) has become a firm favourite at Thai at the Sal and is a sweeter, milder curry that is slow-cooked for hours with mild, earthy spices. It is usually served with nuar (beef) but our charming waiter, who hailed from southern Thailand, encouraged me to try it with kae (lamb shank). It was a good choice; the lamb was some of the most tender I’ve eaten and just melted in the mouth. A portion of sticky jasmine rice (£2.50) was the perfect accompaniment. My wife was steered towards the pad krapow (£10.95), listed on the menu as the first dish Ton learned to cook. It’s a very traditional Thai dish made with fresh chilli, garlic, Thai holy basil, sweet basil, oyster and soy sauce. Moderately spicy, on this occasion it was served with crispy belly pork and green beans and came with rice topped with a fried egg. We don’t often make it to dessert but decided to indulge. A Thai coconut pancake and toffee honeypot provided a fitting – and cool – end to a delicious meal.

Due to current government restrictions on large gatherings, sadly there’ll be no Eastside Resaturant Awards event this year but that doesn’t mean Doncaster’s restaurants should rest on their laurels. Thai at the Sal clearly aren’t. Hopefully we’ll see you next year. Thai at the Sal 14 South Parade, Doncaster, DN1 2DR Tel: 01302 340705 www.thesalutationdoncaster.com

EDUCATION

Classroom calling ALL SCHOOLS ARE SET TO RE-OPEN THEIR DOORS IN SEPTEMBER. WHAT CAN YOU EXPECT TO FIND? WE TRY TO ANSWER SOME OF YOUR QUESTIONS. eturning to school in September is going to be a step into the unknown for many children and parents. For some, they won’t have set foot in a classroom for almost six months. It’s hard enough going back after the sixweek holidays, imagine what that will be like after six months? And all on the back of the Covid-19 pandemic… I have two primary school-age children whom, like the majority of the country, stopped attending at the end of March once lockdown measures were enforced. With two parents at home, homeschooling became the norm for the foreseeable future – we had timetables, lessons, games, quizzes, PE with Joe Wicks… namely anything to keep them busy and stimulated. Work was set by their school via Google Classroom and they had regular Zoom meetings to interact with their fellow classmates and teachers. It was different but they seemed to take it all in their stride. Come the end of May there was talk of returning to school before the summer, which raised a huge number of questions, mainly is it safe and how will it work? Of course, not all children did return but for those that did – including my children – it proved, in their case, to be a hugely rewarding and beneficial experience.

R

I have to give huge praise to the staff at my children’s school who created a safe and welcoming environment for all returning children. All classes were split into two, creating individual bubbles, and they attended two days each week from the end of June. Staggered start and finish times, oneway systems and consistent hand washing became their new norm. They loved seeing their friends and teachers and just those few days gave them an insight into what to expect come September. The government are insisting that all children return to education as it is vital for their education and for their wellbeing, as they state: “Time out of school is detrimental for children’s cognitive and academic development, particularly for disadvantaged children. This impact can affect both current levels of learning and children’s future ability to learn, and therefore we need to ensure all pupils can return to school sooner rather than later.

EDUCATION

“We are, therefore, asking schools to prepare to welcome all children back this autumn. While coronavirus (COVID-19) remains in the community, this means making judgments at a school level about how to balance and minimise any risks from coronavirus with providing a full educational experience for children and young people.” Schools, colleges and universities will have all been risk assessed in preparation for re-opening fully and government guidelines insist that the following measures are adhered to: • a requirement that people who are ill stay at home • robust hand and respiratory hygiene • enhanced cleaning arrangements • active engagement with NHS Test and Trace • formal consideration of how to reduce contacts and maximise distancing between those in school wherever possible and minimise potential for contamination so far as is reasonably practicable. How contacts are reduced will depend on the school’s circumstances and will (as much as possible) include grouping children together, avoiding contact between groups, arranging classrooms with forward-facing desks and staff maintaining distance from pupils and other staff as much as possible. This is a step into the unknown for education establishments and will be a learning experience for pupils, staff and parents alike. Jeff Smith, the new Collegiate Principal at Queen Ethelburga’s is well aware of the challenge ahead. “The challenges facing schools across the UK in preparing for full reopening in September – as we’ve heard said many times already – are unprecedented,” he said. “We have issued guidance to our students and parents on the measures we are taking to keep the campus as safe as possible, whilst maintaining the welcoming and happy atmosphere that they know and love.” Whether primary or secondary, September will see class sizes to return to capacity the main difference being that primary schools will have class bubbles, maintaining the same teacher for all lessons, whilst secondary pupils will be in year bubbles, meaning they will remain in the same class groups but can have different teachers for different subjects. Of course there are many more questions. Here’s just a few frequently asked ones about the return: Are the teachers going to re-teach work set through lockdown?

This will vary from school to school and indeed between subjects. Ultimately, especially at secondary, there is pressure to ensure all the specification is covered so it is likely not to include a complete re-teach but a recap with content embedded in new topics where it lends itself to an easy link. What are schools going to do to keep students and staff as safe as possible?

More hand-washing will be introduced to a ‘new normal’ routine. Staggered lunch times and break times will be used with zoning of students as well as staggered start and end times to the school day. Students will all face forward and staff will remain, wherever possible, 2m apart from students. It is likely that staff will also have different lunchtimes which will decrease numbers in shared areas at any one time.

What happens if a student or staff member tests positive in the bubble?

Current guidelines from Public Health England (PHE) mean that it will be handled on a local level. The action can vary but could involve small groups of staff and students selfisolating for up to 14 days. The number of staff and students would depend on the bubble size and exposure. This could be increased if the number of positive cases increases and mobile testing units could be deployed to increase the number of tests. The guidelines change frequently so up to date information would be sought by the school. What happens to students and staff if they are selfisolating?

If students are well and self-isolating, they will be expected to access home learning that will be provided by the school. If staff are well and self-isolating, they will be expected to provide relevant resources for home learning. What happens if a student falls ill at school?

If a student becomes unwell at school, they will be asked to isolate if any symptoms match the main Covid-19 symptoms. Staff in these situations will be wearing PPE. Its likely that the school will contact parent/carer for immediate collection of the student. Individual schools will be able to provide up to date information. Alternatively, visit www.gov.uk for the latest guidelines. Eastside | www.eastsidemag.co.uk 53

The principles of preparing for a whole school reopening THE NEW PRINCIPAL OF QUEEN ETHELBURGA’S TALKS ABOUT PLANNING FOR A SEPTEMBER REOPENING, FOR ALL AGE GROUPS, AND HIS VISION FOR THE COLLEGIATE. tarting the next academic year as the new Principal of Queen Ethelburga’s Collegiate will be a very different experience to that which I had envisioned when I was first appointed. Having been in education over 30 years, 17 of these as the head of large UK and international independent schools, I’ve seen some change in practice. The challenges facing schools across the UK in preparing for full reopening in September – as we’ve heard said many times already –are unprecedented. With key worker and Forces boarding students staying on campus throughout lockdown, and a successful welcoming of our Reception,Year 1 and Year 6 cohort in early June, we now have plenty of experience of operating in a controlled lockdown. QE has complied with, and gone beyond, the measures required by government and we have committed ourselves to the BSA School Safe Charter. We are using this experience to ensure we have adaptable plans in place, as we welcome students back at the start of term. We have issued guidance to our students and parents on the measures we are taking to keep the campus as safe as possible, whilst maintaining the welcoming and happy atmosphere that they know and love. Our location is ideal. Queen Ethelburga’s benefits from a highly secure, rural campus, set in the stunning North Yorkshire countryside. It is looking increasingly likely that

school will be reopening in September without the social distance restrictions we have now, however, we are still planning to bring our boarders back two weeks earlier in August, so that we can offer quarantine if necessary, but also to offer a curriculum preparation programme for the year ahead. Our priorities for the next year build on QE’s success story to date. We know

Collegiate Principal Jeff Smith

that the key to academic excellence is the consistency in quality of teaching, therefore this will always be the focus for the Collegiate. Continuous improvement is also key. We will be reflecting on everything we do and will always seek feedback from our students, parents and teachers so that we understand our community needs and find ways to meet them. We will continue to find ways to broaden and improve the curriculum and enrichment opportunities we offer, and extend students learning beyond the restraints of the classroom. We will use our recent online teaching and learning experience to develop our IT strategy, taking the opportunity to develop elearning in an impactful way. Through our academic, pastoral and enrichment programmes, we will continue to develop the personal qualities of our students, such as leadership, resilience, critical thinking and responsibility. As always, we will prioritise the safeguarding, health and wellbeing of all our students and staff. To find out more about QE, visit www.qe.org.
