ES Gardens
A spring gardening guide Make the most of your outdoor space throughout the seasons – starting in Spring. By Laura Booth. Spring gardens – where the magic happens Now that the cold winter months are finally behind us, it’s time to embrace the longer days and put our green fingers to good use. Whether you’re a beginner or an advanced gardener, you will know that spring is one of the busiest times and the need to prepare in advance is crucial. Here are some top tips to make sure you are on top of things for the spring months: Get rid of weeds. As the weather becomes warmer, your garden will start to feel alive again. The weeds that you dread to see covering your garden will start appearing, along with ivy and brambles on the base of hedges; get rid of them as soon as possible. Mow your lawn. You have probably been avoiding doing jobs in your garden over the cold winter period. If you haven’t cut your lawn yet, it is best to do so at the start of the spring months. Tie back trees. Trees and climbers that have been damaged from snow or frost can now be pushed back into shape; this will help them grow throughout the forthcoming months.
10
After preparing your garden for springtime, you will be starting to think about making your garden colourful in time for the glorious summer months. What flowers shall I plant in the spring season? Pansies One of the best flowers to plant in spring. Usually placed in containers. They need to be planted in the sun or a spot partly in the shade in welldrained soil. Lilacs Come in all shapes and sizes from shrubs to trees. They need full sun and well-drained soil to thrive in spring.
Daffodils They come in a variety of colours: Orange, white, yellow, orange-red and salmon. They also need full sun and well-drained soil to survive. Dahlias Put the plants in pots at the beginning of spring inside, e.g a conservatory. The Dahlias will have grown to six-inch plants by May. Alternatively, if you do not wish to start the plants growing inside, wait approximately three weeks until the weather is warmer and frost is not as likely. Plant them in direct sunlight, deep into the soil so the tubers are sheltered from the cold. Support the stems by tying them to soft twine. Water them regularly in dry weather, and feed regularly over the summer months.

Popular vegetables to grow in your garden Growing your own vegetables can be very beneficial and cost saving. If you’re thinking about growing crops, the middle of April is the best time to ensure your veg are the tastiest they can be. Focus on how much space you have in your garden; this will tell you what you can grow. If space is limited, think about buying ‘dwarf selections’ or ‘patio’ vegetables. Carrots Best grown in the open ground and in hot weather. If the foliage starts wilting, water the carrots every ten days. Make sure you weed before planting; if you let weeds grow, they could overcrowd the carrots. Be careful when weeding that you don’t crush the foliage, the smell can attract carrot fly, which can lay eggs. Putting a barrier over the carrots can prevent this. Leaf lettuce Thin seedlings when leaves start to appear, proceed until the plants are 30cm apart. The plants need watering when the soil is dry in the mornings. Lettuce can attract sparrows, a barrier can prevent this. Onions To grow efficiently, they require a sunny, well-sheltered spot with fertilised soil. Best grown in open ground. Plant each onion 10cm apart. Stop watering and feeding once the onions have grown bigger. Birds can try and lift the skin of the onion at the top, before planting remember to remove the skin. Potatoes After the potatoes have been planted and the stems are 23cm high, it is essential that you start ‘earthing up’, dragging soil up covering the stems to produce a 15cm high range. ‘Earthing up’ is essential; it protects developing potatoes from a substance called light. Light potatoes are green in colour and are poisonous.
Keep it green and lush Every gardener takes pride in their lawn; however it can be hard to keep your grass looking green and healthy all year round. Spring is the best time to tend to your lawn. Here are some essential tips: • Fertilise in early spring to promote root development • Remove small amounts of soil to help your lawn aerate, this allows the water and fertiliser to infiltrate deeper into the soil. • Cutting your lawn to the correct height depends on the time of the year. In spring, use a one-inch cutting height to remove dead grass and allow light to penetrate the roots. In summer the cutting height can be raised to two or more inches. • To ensure your lawn is fresh for all seasons you should soak the grass rather than sprinkle lightly; a main reason for this is so the water gets to the deep roots.
Keep it trim At this busy time of year for gardeners, the final key task is pruning. This involves the cutting away of dead, overcrowded branches or stems of a bush or flower. The following plants need pruning in early spring: Ornamental grasses Tie the tops before cutting, it makes for an easier job. Cut the stems close to the ground. Perennials These can also be cut back anytime in winter. Cut back to four inches to generate stronger new stems. Evergreens Prune the stems with damaged foliage from the winter months. Flowers – Summer flowering trees, shrubs, vines, hydrangeas and roses Eliminate dead and damaged stems. Cut size as required.

And more than that, COREtec is a beautiful product, bringing a high-end finish to any room. Luxury vinyl tiles, or LVTs, are an innovation from across the Atlantic, where they’ve proved an enormous hit. Sisters Joanne Horgan and Lisa Beaumont run two of the area’s most popular flooring stores, United Carpets and Beds in Barnby Dun Road, Doncaster, and Queens Road, Sheffield. They say they’re excited to add COREtec LVT to their new spring ranges that are just coming into the stores now. “Our customers love being offered something new, and we’re delighted with luxury vinyl tiles,” said Joanne. “They look absolutely amazing – the range of finishes is superb, and designed to look good in every room of the house. But there’s also a host of other advantages with LVTs to make them a brilliant choice for your home.” COREtec is engineered to be outstandingly hardwearing, with four layers. Its top layer protects against wear, and provides easyclean resistance to stains – it’s tough enough to Sisters Joanne Horgan be rated for and Lisa Beaumont of United Carpets & Beds commercial traffic as well as domestic use.

With COREtec, you also don’t need to worry about water – it’s water-resistant, unlike some laminates, so is perfect in bathrooms and kitchens. LVTs are warm underfoot, too. Joanne said: “LVTs really are a luxury option that can make a huge difference to the way your room looks – but they’re also extremely cost-effective.” United Carpets and Beds is a large company, with more than 60 stores across the UK run by award-winning franchisees such as Joanne and Lisa. It means the company has huge buying power, which it’s able to pass on to customers. “People come to us again and again because we’ve been running our stores in Doncaster and Sheffield for a long time and have a great reputation for friendly, family service and fantastic deals,” said Joanne. “We’re thrilled with our new spring flooring ranges, and we’re particularly excited to be able to offer COREtec flooring to our customers – we think it’s going to be massively popular. “So come down and take a look – we think you’ll like LVTs as much as we do!”

HAVE YOU MADE A WILL? If you die without having made a Will then everything you own could end up going to the state rather than the family or loved ones you intended to benefit. Unless you make a Will the intestacy rules decide who inherits and in what proportions. The intestacy rules also determine who will be responsible for administering your estate and you will also have missed the opportunity to plan for inheritance tax. If you die leaving family members who are financially dependent upon you, such as a spouse or children, it is the law that stipulates who will inherit your estate. Your dependents may not receive anything at all in certain circumstances. It is important for homeowners to have a last will and testament because of the effects of inheritance tax. By making a last will and testament, you can make use of tax planning opportunities. If you die without a last will and testament - and you have no relatives beyond a group specified by the law - then absolutely everything you own goes to the Government.
FIVE GOOD REASONS TO MAKE A WILL: 1. Making a Will is the only way to ensure your property and possessions will go where you want after your death. The only way to ensure that your dependants are provided for in the event of your death is to write a legally enforceable Will. It is essential if you wish avoid any argument, expense or delay. 2. A Will is essential to provide properly for young children in the event of both parents dying. 3. If you have married, separated, divorced or remarried since you made your Will, it is essential to make a new Will. 4. You should seek professional advice when you make or change your Will. Homemade Wills may be incorrectly drawn up and executed and so may not stand up in law. 5. You can mitigate potential inheritance tax that your estate may suffer by careful drafting of the terms of the Will. In short, making a Will brings security, reassurance and peace of mind, not just to you but those who depend on you.

ES Local Produce
The benefits of buying local Quality over convenience seems to be the order of the day as many of us are shunning supermarkets in favour of local producers. Words: Frances Cawthorne
O
nce upon a time, everyone went to the supermarket to buy their groceries and never gave a thought towards local produce. No-one would be seen to be searching the labels of their fillet steak and pondering on the question ‘where did this actually come from?’ Yet, a growing consciousness towards the source of our food has led to the rise of farm shops, and a reappraisal of the importance of butchers and fishmongers in our communities. After all, let’s be honest, everyone would rather cook and eat food that has been grown and reared in farms that may well be in sight of your home, than a product that has travelled thousands of miles to get to you. It always feels special when restaurants strive to include local produce on their menus, as you are not only eating something that is fresh and healthy, but you also know that the plate of food in front of you is giving something back to the community. And of course, if it’s from Yorkshire, it’s bound to taste better. However, patriotism aside, there truly are benefits to the flavour of food when it comes from close to home. When vegetables are plucked from the best soil and picked from the vine at their peak ripeness, they are bursting full of nutrients and flavour; the delivery time from growing to selling is virtually nonexistent, and they are available to buy within days or even hours at your local shops. The only way to eat any fresher is by getting down and dirty and growing your own. As small local food businesses are not committed to mass production, this allows
32
for more quality control and perhaps even some variety in size and shape. Those lovingly grown tomatoes and onions may not be the right shape to comply with generic supermarket packaging but they will be truly delicious. We’re always being told to go ‘green’ and consider the environment in everything we do, and buying local is a perfect way to do your bit for the ozone layer. Not only does the reduction in delivery time lead to fewer carbon emissions, but the small scale growers and producers within our community also tend to be more environmentally friendly by rejecting the supermarket methods creating a greater quantity – rather than quality – of food. As small-scale producers do not need to grow food intensely, artificial fertilisers and chemicals can be kept to a minimum. It is reassuring to know that meat and dairy products have been produced from animal stocks which have been treated with the utmost respect for animal welfare. And everyone would prefer a cut of lamb that has been carefully hand-cut locally, as opposed to machine-cut in a factory far away. More and more people are looking to support the local economies within their community, and are willing to pay more for fresh high quality products in order to do so. From brilliant butchers to fabulous farm shops, there are plenty of local suppliers that provide fresh, high quality products right on your doorstep, how perfect is that? So treat your tastebuds as well as your local community and go local by purchasing food with a purpose.

2016 is a big year for the Regional Magazine Company (RMC) as we launch our 30th anniversary celebrations - and we are looking for other businesses who have managed to stand the test of time to join in the fun. Our story started way back in 1986 when the first copy of our first magazine, Westside, was published. We’ve grown considerably since then into a company that publishes nine monthly lifestyle and business titles across Yorkshire, North Notts and North Derbyshire, as well as publishing books for some of Great Britain’s most prestigious restaurants. We also have a strong online presence and we’ll be celebrating our 30th with a major relaunch of our website. 1986 was the year Prince Andrew married Sarah Ferguson, Gary Lineker set a UK transfer record when he moved to Barcelona for £2.75million, Margaret Thatcher opened the M25 and the first episode of Casualty was aired. Since then, as anyone who has been in business the same length of time will know, there have been good times as well as upsets, recessions and major changes across the world. So, if you also set up your business in the year of 1986, congratulations on standing the test of time and here’s a birthday gift from RMC for you. We are offering a free advert in one of our titles. Bawtry Fashion Week took centre stage in the town this month. Whilst the national media may be talking about the international fashion weeks that have taken place in London and Milan, a small market town near Doncaster created a buzz of its own. Now in its fourth year, Bawtry Fashion Week (BFW) saw a range of events hosted by the town’s fashion retailers for many loyal customers and visitors. “Thanks go to all the retailers who participated and to everyone who enjoyed the events that they hosted,” commented Rebecca Dickenson, chair of the Bawtry Retail Association. “Our fashion week adds a real emphasis to the amazing selection of fashion and accessories on offer in Bawtry and it was great to see the retailers working together to make it another great success. “And thanks must go to Bawtry Bar & Brasserie for a fantastic after show party, where retailers from the town were able to network and celebrate their successes once again.” During the week, the team at Yasmine of Bawtry hosted a couple of seated presentations showcasing the 2016 Joseph Ribkoff spring/summer collection, where guests enjoyed a glass of fizz, whilst glimpsing at what the iconic brand had created for the season ahead. Meanwhile, Robinsons of Bawtry welcomed a representative from Wolford, who presented their exciting new products including the award-winning Pure legwear with bonded seams for improved fit and comfort. Even the glitzy after party at the Bawtry’s Bar & Brasserie was a chance to dress to impress, with entertainment provided by suited house saxophonist Adrian Bosnia, whilst a singer in a glamorous blue, sparkly dress sang happy birthday in true Marilyn Monroe style to Andrew Longworth. Playboy Bunnies, courtesy of Poppy’s Elite, were also in attendance and were snapped with guests. The week was a great success and once again, showcased the wealth of boutiques, beauty outlets, restaurants and bars the town has to offer. Bawtry Retail Association (BRA) is a member organisation of businesses and retailers in the town. They work together to promote the town, attract visitors and business investment and host a calendar of events throughout the year. Wedding season The Crown Hotel in Bawtry has been promoting its fantastic wedding packages this month with a stand at the Ido Weddings Exhibition at Doncaster Racecourse and an open day at the Yorkshire Wildlife Park. Katey and Tori were representing The Crown at the Doncaster Racecourse event, which was attended by thousands of couples. Guests were treated to prosecco and chocolate dipped strawberries, whilst Charlotte from Poppy’s Elite joined Katey and Tori, dressed in full wedding attire. Meanwhile, guests were treated to arrival fizz and canapés and had a tour of the ceremony room, which was decorated by White Rose Occasions of Doncaster, at the Yorkshire Wildlife Park event to promote their joint wedding package. Couples who choose to marry at the park, can take advantage of photo opportunities with the animals, before returning to The Crown for their reception. The Crown also had a stand at Doncaster Racecourse for the 2016 Business Exhibition, promoting the Crown as the ultimate hotel of choice for all business accommodation and conferences. They also held a competition to win a luxury stay at the hotel – all guests had to do was take a selfie with the crown and post it to their social media pages. All three events went well, with lots of potential couples and businesses making bookings for 2016.
New menu at The Crown The delicious new Crown restaurant menu was launched in February and is already going down a storm. The most popular dishes are the garlic wild mushrooms with crumbly stilton starter, The Crown surf and turf main (crispy pork belly, scallops, black pudding), and the sharable cheeseboard with baked camembert,Yorkshire blue, fountain gold cheeses and Welbeck bakery breads, chutneys, celery and grapes for afters. The Crown Hotel is renowned for hosting some of the region’s most spectacular special occasions. Here, three very satisfied customers share their experience of organising events at Bawtry’s fabulous four-star hotel.
Charity ball in aid of The Cystic Fibrosis Trust Hogarth Suite, Saturday 5 March
Nicola and Joanne
Joanne and Kerry
Nicola Henderson, Joanne Farmer (whose husband has cystic fibrosis) and Kerry Newall raised a staggering £7,000 for The Cystic Fibrosis Trust thanks to a glittering charity ball at the Crown for 120 guests. Nicola explains why they chose the hotel – and why they were so pleased with the result. “The Crown was a good location for a lot of the local people attending but also offered overnight accommodation for those travelling from further afield. Having visited the restaurant many times before we knew the food was to a very high standard. For the meal, guests chose from starters of salmon and king prawns, tomato and basil soup or baked goats cheese. Mains were salmon fillet, breast of chicken stuffed with sundried tomatoes and mozzarella or Yorkshire fillets of beef. Dessert was lemon tart, sticky toffee pudding or chocolate brownie, followed by a sharing platter of cheeses with coffee and chocolates, and then bacon sandwiches were served at midnight. Everyone has raved about the fabulous food. The evening had a raffle, a singer and a DJ but the best moment was when all the guests were arriving and were wowed by what they saw – all the hard work had been worth it! The events team were always available to meet and address any concerns and were there on the night to make sure everything ran smoothly and take the pressure away from us.They also gave us a number of contacts which helped in organising the event, including White Rose Occasions who did a fantastic job of dressing the room. Overall, it was a great experience and we If you are thinking about organising hope to organise another ball at the Crown a charity event, a ball or indeed any next year.” special occasion, contact The Crown Hotel events team on 01302 710341 or events@crownhotel-bawtry.com to arrange a meeting and show round of the hotel. Doncaster and District Law Society Ball Hogarth Suite, Friday 19 February
Janice Oxley is proof – if it ever it was needed – that the Crown Hotel experience stays with a visitor long after they leave. When she was tasked with organising the annual Doncaster and District Law Society Ball for 110 people this year, she had been so impressed with a wedding she’d attended at the hotel ten years previously that she knew it was the right place for them. “The hotel has such a good reputation and I knew first hand that the food, the service and the rooms were excellent so it was an easy decision. The events team were so attentive and helpful throughout the process, always suggesting ways to make the event even better. We were wondering what to do for entertainment at the table and the magician they suggested was great. White Rose Occasions also did a wonderful job of dressing the room. When we arrived and saw the room it felt like the weight of the world had been lifted from our shoulders. Everything we had been promised had been delivered and I just thought ‘oh my word, this is incredible’. Everyone was really impressed and are already asking if we can hold the ball there again. I even got a formal letter from Judge Graham Robinson, who thanked us for inviting him to such a ‘splendid affair’ and commented on how much he had enjoyed the ‘wonderful food and drink’. The staff dealt really well with all of our guests, including a number of vegetarians and vegans, and even helped with the raffle, which raised £600 for Barnardos. They were also great with the little things like clearing the tables efficiently, providing drinks when they were needed, setting up bar tabs for those who wanted them and offering rooms for everyone. Throughout the entire process, nothing was too much trouble and they always answered our queries with ‘of course, no problem’. The Crown were excellent from start to finish and I can’t praise them enough.” Photographs courtesy Rob Ferrol Photography www.robferrolphotography.co.uk
Grease-themed party in aid of Alzheimer’s Society Hogarth Suite, Saturday 20 February
Each year, Ryan Direct Group – an insurance services provider based at Lakeside in Doncaster – nominates a charity and staff are encouraged to raise as much as they can throughout the year. Employee Jessica Logan, who lives in Bawtry, took on the challenge of arranging a Grease-themed party in aid of the chosen charity for 2016, Alzheimer’s Society – and there was one venue she knew would be up to the task of hosting such a fun event. “I’ve been to other charity events at the Crown and have always been impressed with how they do things. The staff are really good and will do anything for you. We met with events co-ordinator Antonia several times – she was great and put us in touch with lots of other suppliers who decorated the room in pink and black and provided a photo booth, which we charged guests £1 to use. There were 108 guests and everyone really enjoyed themselves and said they’d had real value for money. For the meal, they built their own burgers at the table and dessert was individual trifles topped with hundreds and thousands. With ticket sales, a raffle we held on the night, and the photo booth, we raised £1,951. Ryan Direct Group then doubled the amount so we raised £3,902 in total, which was fantastic. The Crown were great and did everything they could to help us raise money – I would definitely recommend them to anyone who was thinking of organising a charity event.”

Stephanie Burns reports on how Bawtry is gearing up for the arrival of this year’s Tour de Yorkshire.
Bawtry gets on its bike!
U
ntil the Tour de France Grand Depart swept through Yorkshire in the summer of 2014, most of us had been confined to watching professional cycling races on TV. The excitement always seemed to happen abroad and only the biggest enthusiasts would travel to witness the spectacle. But with the Grand Depart – and Team GB’s cycling prowess at the London 2012 Olympics – a new passion for the sport was ignited in Britain. Thanks to the great success of last year’s inaugural Tour de Yorkshire, this interest shows no sign of fading any time soon. This year’s event, organised by Amaury Sport Organisation and Welcome to Yorkshire, kicks off in Beverley on Friday 29 April. During Stage 1, 18 teams of eight riders will ride 184km through Tadcaster, Knaresborough and Grassington before finishing in Settle. Both male and female riders will then face the same 135.5km-long stage on Saturday 30 April, which begins in world champion Lizzie Armistead’s home town of Otley. They’ll head south, passing Conisbrough Castle and zipping through Tickhill and Bawtry, before crossing the finish line in Doncaster. Stage 3, which covers 196km, takes the riders from Middlesbrough to Scarborough via Sutton Bank, the North York Moors and Whitby. Entertainment by race ambassadors and a Tour de Yorkshire caravan will precede each race. Sir Gary Verity, chief executive of
44
Welcome to Yorkshire, explained the reasons behind this year’s route: “We’ve selected routes which showcase Yorkshire’s stunning scenery and will also deliver an excellent sporting event. Our first race was phenomenally successful, bringing 1.5 million spectators to the roadside, generating over £50m for the regional economy and being broadcast around the world – not many races can say that.” Bawtry is taking full advantage of this interest, with businesses planning to fly yellow flags, decorate their windows with themed displays, and trim their exteriors with yellow flowers, bunting and bikes from Friday 22 April to Monday 2 May.Yellow hand flags and whistles will also be handed out to children and anyone who wears yellow on the day, and there will be prizes for the best ‘yellow selfie’ posted on Facebook using the hashtag #VisitBawtry. Those supporting the race in and around Bawtry can purchase a
special commemorative t-shirt for £11.99 from AiroSportwear by calling 01302 741 708 or visiting www.airosportswear.com. “We will make this a day to remember for Bawtry,” said Rebecca Dickenson, chair of Bawtry Retail Association (BRA). “The first Tour de Yorkshire saw over 1.5 million spectators line the route with over 6 million enjoying the event on TV, so it’s great that we are making such an effort. More plans are still to be finalised but, in the meantime, we hope that Bawtry folk will support this amazing occasion and help us to really put Bawtry on the map.” The route, which will enter Bawtry close to its Nottinghamshire border and pass through the town before forking right towards Austerfield, will snake its way through the borough of Doncaster before its spectacular sprint finish on South Parade. The inaugural ladies race will pass through Bawtry between 10.30am and 11am, finishing in Doncaster around 11.30am-12noon. Bawtry will then welcome the male riders between 4pm and 4.30pm, before they finish in Doncaster around 5-5.30pm. There is plenty for spectators in Bawtry to get involved with on the day. Bawtry Gym is hosting a bike challenge on the Market Place, The Vanilla Rooms will be spraying people’s hair yellow, and Co-op is selling raffle tickets at £1 a strip for the Co-op

Can mind control really help you lose weight? Liz from Elizabeth Ann Therapies considers the options.
H
ypnotherapy is a great way to readjust habits and you can enjoy the flexibility and common sense approach. With a hypnotherapy weight loss programme you will not be on starvation diets, expensive supplements or faddy eating patterns. Instead, the power of hypnotherapy is used to help you achieve your weight loss goal in a safe and natural way, by helping you change any unhealthy eating patterns and habits. Hypnosis can help you take control of your eating habits, boosting your willpower, and can also motivate you to exercise. It is important for the hypnotherapist also to find out the emotional reasons why you are overeating, to remove old unhelpful thinking patterns, habits and behaviours. A bespoke hypnotherapy programme is a good way to acheive your goal. As an individual it is better to have a tailored plan which is suited directly to your needs. We recognise that every client is unique and has different needs which have to be addressed. A typical standardised plan is not always enough to get the changes that you want. Self-hypnosis is a marvellous tool that you can use as and when needed.

I am around five stones overweight and don’t want to enter my fifth decade being like this. I have been told hypnotherapy can help; do you agree? Change any negative thoughts about eating and you lose weight responsibly without impacting on emotional well-being. The bespoke weight loss programme can be tailored to your needs. Footsteps on the dancefloor Enjoy a stylish night out at Doncaster’s newest bar.
O
ver the past few winter months, you’d be forgiven for going into a kind of social hibernation, but as we settle into warmer spring days and brighter evenings, it’s time to dust off those brogues and stilettos to hit the town once more. And with the opening of elegant wine bar Huellas in Doncaster town centre, you can kick off a new year of nights out in style. Co-owners Mike Hollick, Jon-Paul Chambers and Paul Marshall opened the bar in February, and it has already had a fantastic reaction from its clients. Mike and The owners Jon-Paul own local estate agency Footprint Properties, Footprint Builders and the Footprint Property Group. It is therefore fitting that they decided on the Spanish word for footprint, huellas, for their wine bar. Owning a bar is a new venture for the two business men, and this is where their partner Paul’s expertise comes in. Paul has been in the pub industry for over 30 years, and in that time, has owned and run many

other successful bars in the area. Along with their wide range of wines, champagnes and proseccos, they also offer premium spirits, cocktails, ciders, lagers and beers. You can even drop by in the afternoons for a tea or coffee. They also serve sophisticated bar snacks such as cheese boards, olives and sharing platters, and are hoping to introduce a tapas menu in the future. Huellas caters for a number of different nights out, with their lively northern soul nights and live music taking place downstairs at the weekends, and a quieter bar upstairs where you can relax and chat to friends with ease. If dancing is the highlight of your nights out, you’ll be happy to hear that the Huellas team is planning to extend the Spanish theme further with a salsa night.
Enjoy some romantic live music every Saturday, or look out for special events on their Facebook page. Whatever the occasion, you will be guaranteed a night out with a touch of glamour. “We are raising the bar in Doncaster in both the quality of our newly fitted bar, and the quality of our products and service,” says Mike. “Our ground floor is large and open plan with separate seating areas, the whole bar is illuminated with soft lighting and also benefits from a state of the art sound system. We will also be having live music and events throughout the year. “On our first floor is our more exclusive bar which can be hired out as a private hire bar for birthdays, functions etc, this also leads out onto our fabulous roof terrace which will be the place to be this summer.” Huellas 10-11 Cleveland Street Doncaster, DN1 3EF Tel: 01302 597777

ES Eating Out Claire Fleetwood
Popular partnership The latest venture from two well-known Bawtry businesses is already proving a hit, as Stephanie Burns discovered on a recent visit.
W
hat happens when you take two Bawtry businesses and combine them into one country pub? The answer is Coleman’s Bistro at The Blacksmiths Arms in Everton, the latest venture from Andy Miller and Andy Longworth of Bawtry’s Bar & Brasserie and John and Sarah Coleman of Coleman’s Pizzeria & Steakhouse. The group joined forces last November to relaunch this wellestablished pub and the result is something really rather special. The licensee – and the face of this new incarnation – is Claire Fleetwood, who has been working for Andy Longworth since 1988. With years of experience running some of the region’s best-known establishments, she’s the driving force behind the early success of this new eatery. The Sunday carvery in particular is going down a storm and it’s already become a buzzing weekend haunt for Bawtry regulars who fancy a change from the norm. We visited midweek and were surprised to find the place bustling despite its relatively remote location. It’s great to see that they’ve retained the rustic pub feel (think cosy corners, low beams and toasty fires) and, while the menu is populated primarily by pub classics – there are several different burgers and steaks alongside dishes such as pie, lasagne and chicken kiev – the contemporary bistro influence shines through on the plate.
56
My starter looked pretty as a picture and tasted just as good. Lightly toasted soda bread was spread liberally with horseradish (watch out if you prefer your condiments on the milder side) and topped with smoked mackerel and salted cucumber. A scattering of micro-herbs finished the dish with a flourish. My dining partner enjoyed an equally tasty chicken liver pate – homemade with port, cranberry and mixed herbs – and a very generous portion of warm crusty bread with two types of chutney. A wonderful start to the meal. We’d heard great things about the pub’s sausage selection but weren’t quite prepared for a ten-strong list courtesy of the Bawtrybased Wilkinson Butchers. This is anything but ordinary bangers and mash – you choose three sausages (Cumberland, lamb and mint and Welsh dragon in my companion’s case), a variety of mashed potato (he had spring onion mash but could have opted for creamy, gruyere or bacon and brie) and a jus (beef and ale, port or minted red wine). It’s a great concept and there’s something to suit even the fussiest of tastes. I also tucked in to a hearty portion of mash but mine came with a tasty pork fillet rolled in fresh herbs and doused in a rich port jus – delicious. By this point we could have practically rolled home but the briefest of glances at the dessert menu soon changed our mind. Without a second thought for my waistline, I devoured a great slab of four-layer chocolate
cake, complete with vanilla ice cream, chocolate sauce and fresh strawberries. My companion chose a light and fluffy lemon meringue pie with a gentle citrus tang and agreed that it had been worth pushing our thresholds that little bit further. It may have only been five months since the Coleman’s Bistro partnership took hold of The Blacksmiths Arms but all indications show that it’s set for a very bright future.

Win tickets to see Will Young
W
ill Young plays Doncaster Racecourse on Saturday 14 May 2016 and Eastside has two pairs of tickets to give away for this fantastic event. Last summer, Will released his critically acclaimed new album 85% Proof which went straight in at number one on the UK Official Album Chart, his fourth number one album. 85% Proof is the sixth album from the multi-million selling Brit Award-winning singer-songwriter and represents his most accomplished work to date. The record is an eclectic, hugely confident and startlingly human record which Clash described as ‘The most deliciously instinctive and relentlessly endearing pop music you’ll hear this year. A masterclass in delivering a mature pop record’. Will has made a successful return to the musical spotlight after spending the last few
years in theatre staring as The Emcee in Cabaret (for which he was nominated for an Olivier Award); presenting an ITV documentary on surrealist artist Magritte; writing a best-selling biography and fronting a campaign for Stonewall. Why don’t you pop along for a day at the races before dancing into the evening with music by Will Young for an action-packed day out?
How to enter: Enter our competition online at www.regionalmagazine.co.uk. The closing date is Friday 29 April. Question: Name Will Young’s latest album.

Is your income suffering from record-low interest rates? Wealth management specialists Dale Murten Wealth Management explore your options.
I
ncome is important. It’s an obvious statement. The difficulty is that, in an uncertain world, investment income is hard to find right now. Investors looking for income have faced an increasing challenge ever since the financial crisis broke in 2008. Prudence and vigilance became the order of the day as financial institutions across the globe took extreme measures to protect themselves from global meltdown. Central Governments across the world also reacted strongly, forcing interest rates to record lows. Six years on and interest rates in the UK remain almost non-existent. The result is real losses for savers in bank and building society deposits which fail to match inflation.
With dividend payouts on the turn, the outlook for equity income funds could also be on the up. Equity income funds have a strong track record for delivering attractive, sustainable income and steady returns over the long term. But it is worth remembering that not all equity income funds are the same. Some are better for income, while others provide better prospects for total return investors through the reinvestment of income. St. James’s Place offers a range of equity income funds managed by investment managers with complementary styles.
Investors wanting to secure a better level of income have realised that they must look beyond traditional cash deposits.
Corporate bond funds which are, by their nature income producers, remain popular particularly with cautious investors. At St. James’s Place we firmly subscribe to the view that a diversified fixed interest strategy with exposure to investment grade, sub-investment grade and senior secured debt will help position your portfolio to benefit from growth across the credit spectrum.
History shows that investing in equities, or shares, has provided investors with a better chance of outpacing inflation over the long term versus other asset classes, particularly if the shares are able to increase the dividend payments year after year. Positively, there are indications that the recent trend of increasing dividend payments could be sustainable.
Commercial property felt the full effects of the credit crunch and the fall in property values left many investors nursing significant losses. But again, history suggests that commercial property has a place in a portfolio for income investors. Its long-term track record is strong and, importantly, it offers returns that are lowly correlated to other asset classes. Investors

should however note that investing in real asset classes (equities, corporate bonds and commercial property) does not provide the security of capital which is characteristic of a deposit account with a bank or building society. The value of capital, and income from it, can fall as well as rise and you may not get back the original amount invested. Those investing for income need to remember that no one asset class is the panacea. With uncertainty around interest rates, a welldiversified, well-managed portfolio which blends a range of asset classes remains the most suitable strategy for investors to satisfy their longer-term income needs. At St. James’s Place we believe that our ability to tailor solutions to an individual’s needs and attitude to risk means your income investments are in good hands. The value of an investment with St. James’s Place will be directly linked to the performance of the funds you select and the value can therefore go down as well as up. You may get back less than you invested.

Upcoming family shows at Cast, Doncaster
Thrills and chills Fiona Barber enjoys a classic fairy tale brought right up to date in a spectacular adaptation.
I
n an imaginative modern twist on Hans Christian Andersen’s classic tale, writer, Philip Osment and director, Jonathan McGrath have adapted Snow Queen into a story relevant to young people living in the modern world. Gaming, online safety, puppetry, fostering and adoption all became part of this innovative and dynamic theatre experience when a young boy, Kai, was seized from the real world into his gaming screen and the grasps of the wintery, digital realm of the Snow Queen. Thankfully his loving foster sister, Gerda, refused to believe Kai was beyond her help and set off fearlessly to his rescue. Along the way Gerda met with talking flowers,
nosey birds, a grumpy reindeer and other magical creatures on a journey that combined technology with puppetry and spirited human performances. With remarkable visuals, an impressive cast of puppets and an original musical score, and expressive movement from a cast of five, in this clever adaptation, Osment and McGrath have transformed a story written in 1844 into a tale relevant to young people today (aimed at sevenyear olds plus). In this fable of childhood curiosity, misplaced trust and unbreakable friendship, Snow Queen fast forwarded nearly two centuries to reside in a world of online viruses, interactive gaming and social media identities and provided topclass entertainment for youngsters.

Doncaster hosts world première of Northern Ballet’s Jane Eyre
Get swept away by unrivalled storytelling, dance and live music as Northern Ballet come back to Doncaster to present the world première of Jane Eyre at Cast, Doncaster from Thursday 19 to Saturday 21 May. 64
H
aving first visited Doncaster in May 2015 with Madame Butterfly to great success, Northern Ballet return with a brand new full-length ballet celebrating the 200th anniversary of Charlotte Brontë’s birth. Jane Eyre is one of literature’s greatest heroines. Orphaned at a young age and cruelly treated by her Aunt, Jane is a plain but intelligent child who grows up knowing little kindness. Sent away to a charitable school, she later accepts a position as a Governess at Thornfield, a gentleman’s manor whose master is the dark and impassioned Mr Rochester. In spite of their social differences, an unlikely bond grows between the pair but
as their romance develops, it becomes clear that Mr Rochester has a hidden past that threatens to ruin them both. A dramatic tale of romance, jealousy and dark secrets, Jane Eyre is the story of one woman’s indomitable spirit overcoming all boundaries. This new ballet is choreographed by international dance maker Cathy Marston, who was previously Associate Artist at the Royal Opera House (2002-2006) and Director of the Bern Ballett in Switzerland (2007 – 2013). She has brought on board an impressive creative team, including composer Philip Feeney, whose credits for Northern Ballet include Dracula and Cinderella. Patrick Kinmonth, who has worked closely with photographer Mario Testino designing

‘Creating for Northern Ballet is a joy because everyone in the organisation shares my passion for telling and digging deep into stories through dance. Though the Company has excellent technique and production values, it is their unparalleled ability as dance actors that I love most.’

numerous campaigns for Gucci,Valentino, Versace and Dior designed the sets and costumes. As the daughter of two English teachers, Cathy was first introduced to Jane Eyre as a child. We caught up with her during rehearsals and asked her to tell us about bringing Charlotte’s Brontë’s iconic novel from page to stage. “Charlotte Brontë’s Jane Eyre was a novel far ahead of its time and when I think of Jane Eyre I feel inspired by images of her passionate but 'impossible' relationship with Mr Rochester, the fire and emotional destruction symbolised by Bertha Mason the infamous 'woman in the attic', the contrasting icy moorland through which she
www.regionalmagazine.co.uk
seems to run from one chapter of her life to another, and of course her final reunion with Rochester. “But these images only touch the surface of a character and a book that continue to provoke and move - generation after generation, re-read after re-read.” Often drawn to strong female characters, Cathy explained that: “Jane is considered an early feminist character. She feels she is fighting the outside world but she is also fighting herself. Her reactions are seldom obvious and we must always ask ’what would Jane do here’ ” Jane Eyre is Cathy’s second full-length production for Northern Ballet, following an adaptation of the Dickens classic A Tale of Two Cities in 2008. On returning to work with the Leeds-based company, Cathy said: “Creating for Northern Ballet is a joy because everyone in the organisation shares my passion for telling and digging deep into stories through dance. Though the Company has excellent technique and production values, it is their unparalleled ability as dance actors that I love most.” Northern Ballet’s Artistic Director David Nixon OBE added: “Having already adapted Emily Brontë’s Wuthering Heights it seems appropriate that Northern Ballet should also
immortalise her sister’s Jane Eyre through dance and doing so in the bicentennial anniversary of Charlotte Brontë’s birth makes it all the more special.” Northern Ballet will also bring Tortoise & the Hare to Doncaster; bringing the muchloved Aesop’s fable to life. It is the company’s fourth children’s ballet, following the sell-out successes of Three Little Pigs and Elves & the Shoemaker, both of which toured to Cast, and were also adapted for CBeebies. Created specifically for children and families, Tortoise & the Hare is the perfect opportunity to enjoy live ballet, music and theatre.
Tickets Northern Ballet are at Cast, Doncaster from Thursday 19 – Saturday 21 May presenting the World Première of Jane Eyre and tickets are £18.50 /£16.50 concessions*.The company will perform Tortoise & the Hare for children 3+ on Saturday 21 May, tickets £8.50 adults / £5.50 child*.Tickets for both performances are available on 01302 303 959 or castindoncaster.com *Includes 50p per ticket booking fee, not charged if paying by cash.

The Phoenix takes flight Leading Yorkshire dance company celebrates 35 years in a special tour coming to Doncaster.
I
nternationally acclaimed Yorkshire dance company Phoenix Dance Theatre are celebrating their 35th birthday with a special anniversary tour, which is coming to Cast in Doncaster on Tuesday 19 April. From small beginnings in inner-city Leeds, Phoenix Dance Theatre has grown to be one of the UK’s leading contemporary dance companies. In celebration of their 35th year the company will present a triple bill of intense, funny and beautiful dances including two brand-new commissions to celebrate the diversity and collaborations for which the company has become internationally known. In a fitting commemoration of the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare’s death, the timeless themes of desire, duplicity and unrequited love are brought to life in Kate Flatt’s Undivided Loves. This brand new piece reimagines Shakespeare’s most intimate, mysterious and radical sonnets through the fusion of sound, words and dance to Brazilian percussionist Adriano Adewale’s vibrant and percussive score. In contrast, acclaimed Dutch/Israeli choreographer Itzik Galilire works his ballet Until.With/Out.Enough, which explores the concept of the enclosed space that exists within our minds, as part of a cocommission with The Royal Ballet and Phoenix Dance Theatre. Audience favourite Melt, created by Phoenix Dance Theatre artistic director Sharon Watson, a visually spectacular aerial dance piece which sees the dancers swoop, glide and collide, completes the Triple Bill at Doncaster. Sharon Watson commented: ‘Like most
