And while she was right to assume that thousands of readers from our range of nine monthly titles would also have a go, she did well to follow her more positive instincts... because hers was the first name out of the hat.

Our competition – with 30 superb prizes donated by independent businesses from across the region – has been the centrepiece of RMC Media’s 30th anniversary celebrations this year.

The grand finale came when Christine joined us for a champagne reception in the showroom of RMC Media’s media partner, My Fathers Heart, to celebrate her success and see the superb selection of prizes on display.

Christine, who lives in Doncaster and is a regular reader of our Eastside magazine, said she was still in a state of shock when she

came along, with her daughter-in-law Lindsey, to collect her prizes.

Joining in the celebrations were representatives from RMC Media and My Fathers Heart and Jackie Gill from Bradfield Brewery, who donated 30 bottles of the limited edition Thirty Something ale, brewed specially to celebrate our 30th anniversary.

Harriet Coulthard from My Fathers Heart said: “It was lovely for us as a company to be able to host such a happy occasion, and to see Christine so thrilled to receive all those great prizes.”

Over the next few months our special winner can look forward to living the high life, thanks to a package of prizes that includes race days, holidays, hotel stays, jewellery, luxurious food and enough fizz to stage a very special celebration party for family and friends.

“I get Eastside every month and read it right through. When I saw all those prizes I thought, ‘I’ll never win it, but I’ll give it a go.’

And then when I was told I’d won I couldn’t

believe it. I’ve not been able to sleep, I’m so excited. All the prizes look great and they’ve come just in time for Christmas.”

As her good fortune begins to sink in, Christine is already starting to think about which prizes she is going to keep, and which will be shared with family and friends.

“I am looking forward to the flights to Guernsey and also staying at The Crown Hotel in Bawtry, which is near where I live, so I am saving that for my birthday,” she said.

A champagne lifestyle lthough Angels Champagne Bar has opened just in time for the festive party season, it isn’t Christmas angels that have inspired the name of Doncaster city centre’s coolest new bar.

Owner, Mandy Butt, explains the heartwarming reason: “In 2012, my son Jack was diagnosed with a brain tumour,” she says.

“Whilst getting treatment at Sheffield Children’s Hospital, he would call the nurses who looked after him his angels.

“Thankfully, Jack is now back at school, living a relatively normal life. We are both very grateful to the staff at the hospital and we were honoured that one of the ‘angels’, Jenny Nolan from the critical care unit, could come and cut

the ribbon at the VIP grand opening of our new bar, named after her and her colleagues.”

Guests at the VIP event were able to sample the delights of the bar for the first time and enjoyed a drink on arrival, canapes, a DJ and some ‘real’ winged angels.

It’s not just the name that makes this bar different. Angels has an on-trend industrial look, an upmarket attitude and a relaxed atmosphere. Aimed at clients in their thirties and forties, it offers an alternative to the bars aimed at younger people that are usually associated with a Saturday night out.

When it comes to music, you can unwind to some chilled-out playlists such as BBC Radio 1 Live Lounge songs in the day, and party to some of the best DJs around in the evening until 2am.

As well as a heavenly selection of champagnes and spirits, talented mixologists are on hand to create some exciting cocktails – you’ll find more than just the average mojito on their menu. What’s more, you can enjoy two cocktails for just £8 during Saturday daytime.

If you are feeling peckish, they also offer bar snacks, breakfasts and lunches. You’ll find healthy and delicious breakfasts such as eggs and avocados on toast and lunches including luxury cheeseboards from the café bar from Thursday to Sunday.

And if you want to book a last-minute Christmas party, you can hire out the whole venue Monday to Wednesday. For those wanting something more low-key, they also offer champagne afternoon tea with three layers of sumptuous sandwiches and sweet desserts.

number of businesses in the area over the years, and is looking forward to joining forces with Mandy to put their unique stamp on the venture.

ON THE 3RD DAY OF CHRISTMAS MY TRUE LOVE GAVE TO ME…

The beauty of art SIX MONTHS OF SUCCESS HAVE MADE LIMITED 2 ART A MUST-VISIT GALLERY. t’s been six months since the people of Bawtry formed a human chain from The Courtyard to the Market Place to transport hundreds of pieces of art through the town. As Limited 2 Art celebrates its first Christmas at Bawtry’s Old Town Hall building, it’s time to look back on the huge success the gallery is enjoying in its new home.

In July, a glittering launch officially opened the gallery, paving the way for a series of glamorous events at Limited 2 Art. In celebration of the gallery’s 12th anniversary, the first Meet the Artist event was held at its new home, with awardwinning 3D resin artist Kerry Darlington.

Customers from far and wide travelled to the see Kerry, who was signing and personalising artwork for her fans.

Following the success of Kerry’s visit, Doncaster’s own David Smith came to meet art fans. Guests were able to exclusively view and purchase his new collection ‘It’s a Dog’s Life’ whilst enjoying a Champagne reception.

Lincoln artist Edward Waite brought art to the gallery in a more literal way, impressing guests with a live paint demonstration.

As well as bringing the best of British artists to Bawtry, Limited 2 Art has hosted artists from across the pond, welcoming American Chris De Rubeis during his first UK tour. The gallery was one of only eight visited by Chris, who has spent years mastering his technique of painting on metal and exhibited his new collection Abstract Sensualism at Limited 2 Art. The gallery uses a number of different publishers and represents over 80 artists both nationally and internationally including Kerry Darlington, Edward Waite, Alexandar Miller, Leigh Lambert, Debbie Boon, David Smith, Doug Hyde, Jack Vettriano, Mackenzie Thorpe, Jennifer Hogwood plus American artists Chris De Rubeis and Todd White.

The youngest artist supported by Limited 2 Art is seven-year-old Daisy Watts, from Misson, Doncaster. Daisy, in her wish to support Cancer Research UK and Doncaster based charity Firefly, had drawn a stunning abstract painting depicting forget-me-nots for those people who have lost their fight against cancer, balanced with bright flowers for those that survive.

To help raise the profile of Daisy’s fundraising endeavours, Ruth framed and displayed the piece in the gallery, and produced 100 special edition prints to sell at the Equinox Charity Ball for £100 each. A bid of £9,500 was made for the original artwork. In total, almost £20,000 was raised

by Daisy.

For Limited 2 Art owner Ruth, life in the new gallery couldn’t be better. She said: “We have hit the ground running, the new space has been well received by local residents and the wider art community alike, we’ve had a really positive reaction.”

As a result of the gallery’s success, Limited 2 Art is a finalist in the Doncaster Chamber Business Awards 2016 Excellence in Customer Service Category.

And with big plans for the New Year, including regular artist visits plus exhibitions including a bi-annual open art exhibition for local talent to enter in 2017, the future is anything but limited for one of the North’s largest art galleries.

“People are coming from far and wide to visit Limited 2 Art,” said Ruth. “We’re a destination gallery, we’re putting Bawtry on the map.”

ello! Firstly I would like to say it is an honour to take over the position of Bawtry Retail Association’s (BRA) chair, and thank my predecessor Rebecca Dickenson wholeheartedly for all her work, and for providing a solid platform from which I can now lead.

For those who don’t know me I am a Partner and Chartered Surveyor at Fine & Country (the very tall one!). I’d also like to introduce Sarah White, of Bawtry Eye Academy, as my vice chair. Together we have some big plans for BRA. We hope to build on the successes that we have achieved so far and drive Bawtry forward as a destination for both day and night, not just regionally but nationally too.

Sarah and I, together with the entire BRA membership, look forward to achieving even more than we have done already, meeting our members and making the association work for each and every one of them.

We’re in full festive mood in the town now,

thanks to the Bawtry Christmas event on 20 November; big thank yous to the BRA Xmas Steering Group, and sponsors One Call Insurance, Wilfreda Beehive and Bawtry Town Council. Plus a huge congratulations to the team at Womack’s for unveiling yet another spectacular Christmas window.

The event, which is in its third year, saw the retail association host a stunning event which enveloped the main street and quaint courtyards with festive stalls, fairground rides, and a visit from Father Christmas.

As is tradition, the unveiling of the Womackâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Christmas window also took place, revealing a stunning living display â&#x20AC;&#x201C; much to the delight of the crowd who cheered and clapped as the windows were unveiled.

Double celebration

After winning ‘Best Lunch’ at the Eastside Restaurant Awards, Bawtry’s Bar & Brasserie has now been selected as our ‘Retailer of the Month’.

I

t’s been an amazing year for Bawtry’s Bar & Brasserie. After bagging the Best Lunch Award at the Eastside Restaurant Awards 2016, we also felt it was only right to commend their brilliant customer service and all-round success too, by awarding them Retailer of the Month.

After a complete refurbishment two years ago, businessmen Andy Miller and Andy Longworth transformed The Cooper & Griffin pub into one of Bawtry’s most loveable bars and eateries. Since then, it has gone from strength to strength.

“Everybody comments on how lovely the décor is when they come through the door,” says Andy Longworth.

“Our bar has such a wide range of products, it’s like a sweet shop for the

discerning drinker. We have five continental lagers, five real ales and five ciders on tap, as well as a fridge full of 50 beers from around the world and a library of between 30 and 40 gins.

“We are very proud of what we’ve achieved in two years. We’ve established ourselves as the destination bar and restaurant and can be confident of a good turn out every evening of the week.”

On a Thursday night, you will find a live blues band, on a Friday a live jazz and swing band and on a Saturday night, you will be wooed by their solo saxophonist. Andy is in charge of entertainment and is looking to creating a party atmosphere this festive season with plenty of live music taking place on Christmas Eve, Boxing Day and New Year’s Eve. And it’s not just a wide range of booze that keeps people coming back for more. Over in the restaurant area, you’ll find delicious dishes courtesy of Coleman’s Pizzeria and Steakhouse, who also had a successful night at the Eastside Restaurant Awards this year, when they came away with the Reader’s Choice Award.

As well as entertaining the casual diners and glitterati of Bawtry alike, they are even the ideal place to hire a private room

for business meetings.

Although there is an outdoor area, which gets lots of sun in the summer and has patio heaters to keep clients warm in the winter, they are planning to add a roof top terrace in the near future.

As a member of the Bawtry Retail Association, they even help put on extra events such as the annual Respect Woodland Green Burials classic and supercar show each August, and the Bawtry Christmas Time event.

As part of the latter event, Bawtry’s Bar & Brasserie celebrated the big Christmas light switch on, with music by Capital FM DJ, Stephanie Hirst.

The business has been such a resounding success, that Andy is expanding by opening the brand new Chase Bar on Wharf Street.

Focussing on spirits, there will be a wide variety of rums, gins, whiskeys and vodkas.

Work has already started and it is expected to open early next year.

The salon has been a familiar venue in Bawtry for many years, having first opened on Swan Street in 2004. Now housed inside the four-star Crown Hotel, The Vanilla Rooms is perfectly placed to pamper both guests and locals alike.

Rebecca, her co-company director John Bogg and their team celebrated the business’s new home with a glitzy launch party, at which guests were invited to enjoy a glass of prosecco and music by violinist Alexander Parker.

The first 40 guests were greeted with delicious cocktails by Oli Clark of 31 Market Place Cocktail Bar and Bistro, whilst all the

guests had the opportunity to enter a prize draw and enjoy demos and 20 per cent off all of the salon’s products. This included high-end salon brands such as Goldwell, Kerasilk, Balmain and ghd – all of which are used on the salon’s clients.

You may have also noticed Rebecca and the team greeting clients old and new, at the Bawtry Christmas Time event. The team had a stall in the Market Place car park, where they handed out glasses of bubbly and festive gift packs.

VISIT BAWTRY POLO CUP FUNDRAISING SUCCESS The fifth annual Visit Bawtry Polo Cup, which took place at the Vale of York Polo Club, Misson in July 2016, raised £5,000 for Doncaster based cancer charity Aurora, taking the total the event has raised since 2011 to £25,000.

CHRISTMAS FAIRS AT YWP After being a great success last year, the Yorkshire Wildlife Park (YWP) Christmas Fair will be held over two weekends – the 10/11 December and 17/18 December. It is the perfect opportunity to enjoy a glass of mulled wine while hearing the lions roar. With the festive season just around the corner, I was invited to the salon to unwind in the run up to the big day and try out some of the new LED facial treatments on offer.

I’ve tried my fair share of facials, and although they made my skin feel good, they haven’t improved its appearance, so I opted for the Neo Elegance mask because of its stellar reputation. Its use within Harley Street clinics and by Dr Tijon Esho of the Body Fixers, and the fact it is endorsed by celebrities such as Kourtney Kardashian and Jessica Alba – and more recently I’m A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here star Stacey Solomon, who opted for the treatment prior to going in the jungle – was an instant attraction.

The treatment works by exposing light to the skin surface, activating the photoreceptors and allowing the skin cells to absorb its energy, accelerating cell biochemical circulation and stimulating the production of collagen, among other processes. The LED face mask works on skin at a cellular level, targeting a variety of skin issues – acne, ageing and pigmentation – transforming the skin from the inside out.

Before the treatment a consultation is carried out to determine what you would like to achieve, and skin care advice on how to get the best from your skin is given posttreatment and on a day to day basis.

The treatment starts with a Decleor cleanse, followed by a deep cleanse and exfoliation and the Galvanic (optional).

Galvanic is also known as a non-surgical face lift; the alternation between the positively and negatively charged ions makes your muscles contract and expand rhythmically, which helps with skin elasticity, smooths wrinkles and tightens muscles.

The LED mask has three settings – I opted for anti-ageing – and the treatment takes around 40 minutes to complete. I was pleasantly surprised to discover that it is not uncomfortable and is completely pain free – I was able to lie back and relax in the serene setting throughout the entire procedure.

Post-treatment, I was advised not to apply anything to my face, and was recommended to have 6-8 treatments (one a week) for best results. The next morning my skin felt soft and in good condition and it looked completely wrinkle-free – almost airbrushed.

I was amazed by my appearance and would highly recommend the treatment, not only for its results, but also the affordable price tag. I will certainly be going back for more.

The pair took over the pub in September, following the retirement of previous landlords Phillip and Sandra Rose. Andy, who owns a number of bars and hotels in the area, and Claire, who has managed some of the region’s top hotels and pubs were approached by the pub’s brewery to take over and jumped at the chance.

Since they took the reins, the pair have brought a horse racing theme to the White Hart, in keeping with Bawtry’s strong connections with Doncaster Racecourse. The pub has been decked out with racing memorabilia from the region’s horse trainers.

Andy said: “We really appreciate the donations, which include trophies and prints,

During the festive season, the pub has a calendar of Christmas events. On Boxing Day, to mark Bawtry’s hunt, there will be a traditional event featuring a hog roast and Morris dancers.

Although the feel of the pub is staying the same, Andy and Claire plan to expand their range of cask and world beers, to bring a more modern selection of beers to their customers.

They also have plans to host more events on the large pub car park, following the success of their Bawtry Christmas

Andy said: “It was absolutely packed, it was brilliant, it was very much an event for families to come and enjoy.”

A really wild time sparkling Christmas full of fun and activities is on the cards at Yorkshire Wildlife Park this festive season.

The award-wining park’s unique backdrop will once again stage the ever-popular Christmas fairs.

And a range of party nights and VIP packages keeps the Christmas spirit flowing throughout December featuring a shimmering mirror-ball disco in the Winter Wonderlandthemed safari tent, complete with a delicious four-course dinner and drink for just £36 per person.

Held over two weekends – 10 and 11 December and 17 and 18 December – the fairs present a perfect opportunity to revel in the festive mood with 100 stalls of Christmas gifts, entertainers, a Christmas grotto, a traditional carousel with galloping horses and a giant snowglobe.

The park, at Branton near Doncaster, has also expanded its Safari Village shopping area to give more independent outlets the chance to showcase gifts such as original artwork, pottery, toys to cuddly lions, tigers and the top-selling polar bears.

A winter menu is also on offer everyday throughout December at the Safari Café with festive lunches served from noon to 4pm for groups up to 24 people.

“Christmas at YWP is now a fixture on the calendar and the atmosphere is fantastic,” said events manager, Chris White.

“It is a unique place and it is always wonderful to see visitors enjoying themselves and getting into the party spirit throughout the festive season.”

Director Cheryl Williams added: “Our Christmas fairs have become more and more popular over the years and we’re all excited for another great Christmas.”

A range of VIP gift packages are also on offer with opportunities to get close to the animals and see how staff care for them. A two-hour behind the scenes VIP tour for up to five people is available at £100 per person while the Carnivore Experience, at £150 per person, brings visitors closer than ever to the world’s most endangered wild cats and more.

The Christmas season crowns a busy year for the park celebrating the arrival of two endangered Black Rhinos who have recently arrived from a zoo in Berlin.

The two-year-olds – Hodari and Dayo – arrived at YWP in a truck after traveling 800 miles from their birth place of Berlin Zoo. They have been settling into YWP’s new rhino house, measuring 16 metres by 35

metres, which will become the focal point of the expanded Africa Plains reserve.

Their arrival is another triumph for Yorkshire Wildlife Park, which is committed to saving at risk species. Black rhinos were almost extinct in 2011 until concerted efforts around the globe brought them back from the brink and numbers have grown to around 5,000.

The black rhino, which used to be native across wide areas of Africa, can measure 6ft tall at the shoulder and weigh in at 3,000lbs, roughly the same weight as a family estate car.

YWP is only the seventh zoo in the UK to have the species and they now take centre-stage in Africa Plains, which gives visitors an amazing walk through experience observing a wide variety of wildlife roaming free. These include Eland antelope, endangered Grevy’s zebra, Lechwe antelope, ostrich and some other visitor favourites – the giraffes, behansin, palle, jambo and jengo.

The park, the UK’s number one walkthrough wildlife adventure, brings visitors almost face to face with some of the world’s most rare and beautiful animals.

Festive fizz WHICH CORK SHOULD YOU BE POPPING THIS CHRISTMAS? WE PUT SOME TOP SPARKLERS – ALL FOR UNDER £30 – TO THE TEST. MOLLY McGREEVY REPORTS. t’s the annual event that marks the start of Christmas, a glamorous gathering of Eastside socialites in one of the Bawtry’s most loved destinations – The Crown Hotel.

Their task, to blind taste a selection of festive fizz, and crown a winner, so our readers can stock up on the best just in time for Christmas.

Although our tasters are occasionally accustomed to quaffing bottles of champers with a three-figure price tag, after the success of last year’s winner – a £30 Asda champagne – we decided to put bottles under £30 to the test once again.

Ten bottles of fizz were tasted, ranging between £4.49 and £27.99 in price, from a range of specialist suppliers and supermarkets.

This year, our tasters were asked not only to score their fizz out of ten but also to identify what they were drinking, as they were served a selection of champagne, cava, prosecco and English sparkling wine.

To conceal any clues, each bottle arrived at The Crown Hotel wrapped in foil, identified

only by a number, so our tasters were truly in the dark about the bubbles they were sipping.

The Crown provided suitably luxurious surroundings for our tasters, and served stunning platters of food to keep stomachs lined during the tasting.

With ten bottles to try, the evening began with a Definition Prosecco Brut NV, priced at £12.99 from Majestic Wine. For Bawtry PR guru Emma Gosling it was a good start:

“It’s got a sweet smell, it’s easy on the palate, I would drink this.”

The Crown’s Katey was onto the fact that this was not to her usual taste – her fizz of choice is usually a glass of Bollinger – but she was still impressed: “It’s not champagne but I wouldn’t say no.”

Up next was the only vintage champagne of the evening, Waitrose’s Brut Special Reserve Vintage 2005 (£24.99), but despite being one of the best quality samples, scored a disappointing 21 out of a possible 70 points.

Peter was first to cast his judgement: “that’s horrible! Is it off? Tastes like retsina from Greece.” Whilst Emma Middleton made a second comparison: “it smells like sherry, and based on the colour I would say it is a cava.”

It was all about the bubbles with bottle number three, and first cava of the night, the Co-op’s Cordorniu Gran Cremant Vintage Brut Cava (£9.99). Both Emma Middleton and Eastside’s Rebecca Hume commented on the amount of fizz in their glass “it’s very lively is this one,” said Rebecca. “But it’s got a weird taste, it starts exciting then falls flat.”

WINE TASTING

In contrast to its predecessor, Tesco’s La Marca Prosecco (£12) was deemed a little lacking in bubbles for our panel, who were proving harder to please than previous years.

The Crown’s Paula was particularly unimpressed: “tastes very flat, the bubbles don’t seem to have much to them.” Across the table, Emma Middleton was more impressed by the “very refreshing and light” taste to the evening’s second prosecco.

At £27.99, Majestic Wine’s Drappier Premier Cru Brut NV was the most expensive fizz sampled, and scored the first ten of the night, awarded by Eastside’s Rebecca for its “clean, crisp, dry taste and fresh bubbles.”

The champers also scored high with Chique’s Carolyn, thanks to its “strong taste and plenty of fizz.” Fizz tasting veteran Katey proclaimed the bottle as a “different breed.”

With high standards to reach, up next was the Cuvée Barcelona (£12) currently stocked at Tesco, Sainsbury’s and Waitrose. But the cava failed to live up to the champagne it followed.

“I do not like it,” said Peter. “I think we’ve been spoilt by number five, it’s awful, it tastes like flavoured water.”

Emma Gosling, who despite criticism had concluded she would drink most of the samples tried so far, declared: “Yuk! Even I wouldn’t drink that.”

Moving on from one of the worst scoring drinks of the evening, the tasters were poured a glass of Co-op Prosecco (£6.99). Unaware of the price tag Katey guessed correctly that she was drinking prosecco but decided it Tasty snacks were on hand

must be an expensive one thanks to it being “nice, fruity and very drinkable.” Her colleague Paula was in agreement: “This makes for easy drinking.”

Up next was another high-scorer courtesy of the Co-op, and the only English sparkling wine of the night, the Balfour 1503 Foxwood Cuvee (£16.99). For Emma Middleton, her favourite of the night: “it’s very fresh and fruity.” Her thoughts were echoed by Paula, Katey and Emma Gosling, who also picked up on the wine’s fruity undertones.

Our penultimate wine, and only bottle under a fiver, was Lidl’s Arestal Cava Brut (£4.49). On first sip each face was screwed up in distaste, with the wine receiving a mere 19 points, its highest score a five from Rebecca: “it’s very sweet, and there aren’t many bubbles.”

Closing the evening was Aldi’s Veuve Monsigny Champagne Brut (£9.99), which received full marks from Rebecca and impressed Carolyn: “this is really nice, my favourite so far, it’s the most expensive tasting one, the best of the night.”

As the final scores were calculated, it became clear that the best had been saved till last, with Aldi’s Veuve Monsigny Champagne Brut clinching the top spot with 55 points out of a possible 70. At under a tenner for a bottle, Aldi’s award-winning champers delivers a gorgeous bouquet of ripe apples, floral hints and soft red fruits and boasts an aroma of baked apple and brioche – according to the supermarket’s experts.

Taking the silver was the most expensive bottle of the evening, Majestic’s Drappier Premier Cru Brut NV. And in third, Co-op Prosecco, the cheapest prosecco of the evening.

So there it is, you don’t have to break the bank this year to enjoy a fabulous bottle of fizz...and for less than a tenner our winner from Aldi gives you an excuse to enjoy fresh, fruity champagne throughout the festive season, not just with your special meal.

Doncaster charity ball smashes target. ow in its third year, the Doncaster-based Equinox Ball charity event smashed this year’s target of £60,000 thanks to the help of some very generous locals.

Amongst their many fundraisers, organisers Sarah and Paul Mullen were particularly grateful to Daisy Watts, a talented seven-year-old, who after winning a painting competition with Limited2Art, helped raise nearly £20,000.

Art, played her part in raising the profile of Daisy’s stunning picture by displaying it in the gallery and producing 100 limited edition prints, which all sold at £100 each.

All of the money raised will be used to put five children through a revolutionary immunotherapy trial and to provide a further vehicle for Doncaster’s Firefly charity, which provides transport for cancer patients to their appointments across the county.

t’s not an easy task to convince us to eat healthier at Christmas; after all this is a time to indulge and treat ourselves, our family and friends – but what if you could eat healthier AND treat yourself and not feel like you are losing out?

Perhaps we just need to think of ‘treats’ in a slightly different light? Does a treat HAVE to be bad for you? A ‘treat’ should surely be something that satisfies our mind (that urge for the comfort in food we all know so well?), but also looks after our bodies.

It is possible to follow a healthy lifestyle, eating healthy food and treat yourself throughout the festive season. Try a couple of these ideas (or all of them!), and you will find treating yourself and your loved ones indulgent and satisfying.

who has to have a gluten-free diet, the vegetarian or even the vegan family member. Providing family meals to suit everyone ‘s dietary needs can be a challenge and you might think that you have to cook something extra to provide for this, but why not adapt your family favourites to ensure you can all enjoy these festive treats together?

Alcoholic drinks are probably our worst enemy for piling on the calories (and for that horrible headache the day after!), but I will still be enjoying a festive tipple with family and friends this year. I will, however be sure to offer a non-alcoholic and refreshing alternative as a cocktail and might even have a jug of this available for Boxing Day as a detoxing and energising remedy….

My non-alcoholic festive tipples will be a choice of either a Coconut Ginger Smoothie (think Pina Colada), or a very festive Cranberry, Orange and Rosemary Juice.

These drinks are perfect for aperitifs or cocktails and also suit younger guests – a festive alternative to sugar-laden soft drinks.

Another idea might be to try one of your own favourite juicing recipes poured over ice in a cocktail glass.

As with the drinks, some of the most popular festive favourites on your Christmas buffet can be transformed with just a few healthy ingredients. Adding a few seeds to your homemade sausage roll mix for

example increases the amount of vitamins, minerals and fibre. linseeds, sunflower seeds or pumpkin seeds are great for this. I make a festive sausage roll mix with dried cranberries, grated butternut squash, golden linseeds, oats and pumpkin seed – my sausage rolls are now super indulgent and full of goodness, and always go down a treat.

Making your own mix of your favourite roasted nuts and seeds is also a great way to add a touch of extravagance and a healthy choice to the buffet or as a homemade gift.

Brussels The mix I have made this sprout salad year is with walnut halves, almonds and pumpkin seeds lightly sprinkled with walnut oil, freshly chopped rosemary and Himalayan pink mineral salt. This mixture is spread evenly onto a baking sheet and then baked in the oven at 180-190 degrees for 20-30 minutes. Stir the mixture once or twice about every 10 minutes as nuts and seeds tend to take to the heat all of a sudden and might burn. You will need to keep a close eye on them.

The Brussel sprout is a stable of the festive table – part of the brassica family of vegetables the sprout is a great natural and healthy choice. Try a simple raw festive salad using fresh Brussel sprouts, garlic,

extra virgin olive oil, orange and a sprinkle of pomegranate seeds.

With some satisfyingly indulgent sweet treats your buffet is sure to be a success, so how on earth do you manage to reduce sugar and provide a genuinely healthy alternative to some of our main treats at Christmas? Try a Cacao or a Cranberry Truffle. With Festive sausage just a few ingredients handy rolls you can make these truffles in no time at all. They are vegan friendly, gluten free and contain no refined sugar.

To make approximately 12 Cranberry Truffles you will need 125g dried cranberries, 1-2 tablespoons ground almonds, 2 tablespoons maple syrup, 20g desiccated coconut and some pumpkin seeds. Briefly soak half the cranberries in hot water – a minute or two is fine.

Drain and place all the cranberries in a blender with 1 tablespoon ground almond and the maple syrup. Blend till smooth. Add a little more ground almond if the mixture needs it. Now roll into 2inch sized truffles and cover half the truffles in desiccated coconut and place two pumpkin seeds in the top resembling Christmas puddings.

When asked to write this article, I was very keen to create a version of a traditional Christmas cake which would not only be healthier than shop bought cakes, but one that would also satisfy the increasing demand for gluten free and vegan food – and I think I’ve done it!

For the recipe I made my own mincemeat as I found it impossible to find vegan mincemeat in the supermarket. But if you can find vegan-friendly mincemeat or, if this is not important, using shop-bought mincemeat would be just fine. If making your own, you will need to start at least a week before you need the cake.

Ingredients

250g pitted dates 1 tin/400ml coconut milk 75g blanched almonds, roughly chopped 75g walnut pieces 250g buckwheat flour (ensure this is gluten free if this is important) 175g ground almonds 1 teaspoon gluten free baking powder 2 teaspoons bicarbonate of soda 1 ½ teaspoons mixed spice 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon ½ teaspoon ground nutmeg ½ teaspoon ground cloves 425g mincemeat 100ml vegetable oil/rapeseed oil Glaze: 50-75ml brandy or sherry, apricot jam Method Start by lining a 20cm deep cake tin with baking parchment and heat the oven to 165C. Soak the dates in the coconut milk while you weigh up and prepare the other ingredients. Then blend the date mixture with a stick blender.

In a large bowl weigh up the dry ingredients, add the blended date mixture, chopped nuts, mincemeat and mix well. Add the vegetable oil and mix again. Now pour into the prepared cake tin and smooth the surface. Cover the tin with tinfoil or baking parchment (tied around the tin) and place on the middle shelf in your pre-heated oven.

Bake for 45 minutes, then remove the cover and bake for a further 45minutes or until a skewer inserted into the middle comes out clean.

Leave the cake to cool for a few minutes while you prepare the glaze. Gently heat the apricot jam and brandy/sherry in a small pan until the jam has dissolved, taking care not to let the mixture boil. Pour this over the slightly cooled cake and spread evenly. Now leave to cool completely before removing it from the tin. The cake can be decorated to your liking.

Berkshire-based Anneeka, 25, looked to the older generation as a starting point when she set out on a mission to discover the true flavours of the old country and connect generations in the process. She then added her own twist to almost 50 classic recipes, all of which are lavishly illustrated in the 224-page book.

And the seven grandmothers she found through her network didn’t stop there. As well as being consulted on the finer points of Indian cooking, each of them added a little spice in the form of some pearls of wisdom to pass on to the younger generation.

The research for her book took her all over the country to seek out grandmothers she knew of, renowned for their excellent cooking.

“We carefully prepared every recipe from scratch with the aim of showing people how to make truly authentic dishes at home. The result is a far cry from what you might find in most Indian restaurants. Their menus feature cuisine which has, not surprisingly, been adapted to the English palate. But in the case of the grandmothers, there was more of a connection with India, and the knowledge they brought over here with them has been passed down across the centuries.”

The recipes chosen for the book are written in an informal style, with plenty of pointers for the amateur cook. Among them are old-school favourites like aloo paratha (stuffed potato flatbread), aloo gobi, mah di daal, cholay and pea and potato samosas, together with dishes for those with a sweeter tooth, such as mango kulfi and barfi.
