World premieres and West End hits coming to Cast Doncaster’s flagship theatre, Cast, has announced its new spring/summer season for 2017. Luxury spa opens at Ye Olde Bell Hotel Ye Olde Bell Hotel in Barnby Moor has announced the opening of a new multimillion pound luxury spa for spring 2017. The 17,000sq ft spa will feature six treatment rooms, a hair boutique and express salon. The spa will offer ten hot and cold experiences including a custom-made ‘snowstorm’ experience – the only one of its kind in the UK – Sabbia Med Sunlight therapy, steambath, salt cascade room, rasul, Swiss pine sauna, mineralising stonebath, herbal laconium, shower walk and indoor-to-outdoor hydropool. The spa will be partnered with LB Therapies, which has had a beauty salon in the hotel for the past four years, and will offer therapeutic and rejuvenating face and body care treatments. Rare rail memorabilia steams into Doncaster’s Frenchgate Shopping Centre Rail enthusiasts up and down the country are being invited to Frenchgate Shopping Centre, Doncaster to see a haul of rare rail artefacts that have remained hidden for years. The artefacts will be displayed from 6 February to 7 March as part of the Making Tracks – Past, Present and Future exhibition. The collaboration between Frenchgate Shopping Centre, Doncaster Council, Business Doncaster, and Doncaster Museums and Art Gallery will feature historic exhibits including locomotive name plates and pictures of the Silverlink train signed by Sir Nigel Gresley – the engineer responsible for the world-famous 20 Eastside | www.eastsidemag.co.uk

Doncaster-built Mallard and Flying Scotsman steam locomotives. The Doncaster Grammar School collection will also be on display. This collection started in the 1930s when pupils and teachers at the school (now Hall Cross Academy) set up a railway society. CAN REFLEXOLOGY HELP WITH FERTILITY? ELIZABETH ANN THERAPIES BELIEVES IT CAN MAKE A POSITIVE DIFFERENCE. eflexology has been used for hundreds of years to help benefit health and wellbeing. Many people ask me whether reflexology help with fertility. In my experience it can, and there are also many mums who say it made a real difference to their health and wellbeing and definitely helped them to conceive.

So what is reflexology? It is a system based on the belief that different areas of your feet and hands correspond to certain areas and organs in the body. Putting pressure on these points is said to stimulate and restore the flow of energy and blood within the body. This ensures you are in the best possible health to become pregnant. As a reflexologist I can say I have found reflexology helps with ovulation and menstrual cycle problems, as well as rebalancing hormones. It is a calming, relaxing treatment and research shows that it can lower your blood pressure and heart rate, relieve tiredness and help you to sleep better. There is also evidence that reflexology can have a positive effect on your quality of life and reduce stress and anxiety. The above will also be helpful when trying to become pregnant, as stress and anxiety may make it harder to conceive. Women would need several sessions over a number of weeks, to help regulate periods and ovulation. Men may also benefit from reflexology to help them to relax during the process of trying to conceive.

Spot the difference TRIED AND TESTED: CAN MICRO-NEEDLING REALLY REJUVENATE AND IMPROVE THE SKIN? Registered general nurse and aesthetic nurse practitioner, Mandy Watson, offers a variety of facial rejuvenation treatments. This month, Eastside sales executive, Rebecca Hume, went to the clinic to try out one of their most effective treatments – microneedling (CIT). Used to stimulate collagen and elastin regrowth and plump the skin, micro-needling is used to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, sun damage, thinning skin, acne scarring and overall texture. “It’s a relatively natural procedure, which stimulates the skin through tiny punctures,” says Mandy. “It’s less invasive than injections and there’s less recovery time compared with laser treatments and peels. Some people prefer to have a top-up six months later, but you usually only need one full treatment a year to maintain the results.” Before Rebecca tried the treatment, she was given a health and safety assessment form to fill in. Once this was done, Mandy applied a topical anaesthetic cream to numb her face and the excess cream was wiped away. Mandy then used a micro-needle roller on each section of her face. This lasted around 15 minutes. After this, she applied a lotion to soothe the skin. Finally, Rebecca was given a recovery mask and was given a moment to

relax. Needless to say, this was the part she enjoyed the most. With after care essential to receive the full benefits from this treatment, all clients receive an instructional booklet and products to be applied when they leave the clinic. Skin products will be absorbed into the skin much quicker so it is important to select the right creams and lotions. Rebecca was advised to use sun screen every day for the next few weeks to stop damaging UV rays. Over the coming weeks, Rebecca’s skin will be stimulated to produce more collagen and elastin so the results will look even better as time goes by. Rebecca said: “I was a little nervous on arrival as I wasn’t sure what to expect, but was quickly put at ease. It wasn’t painless, but it was certainly more bearable than I had expected. “I felt confident that Mandy was experienced and knowledgeable. She kept me informed about the procedure and the benefits throughout the 30 minutes and even gave me a hand massage. “Immediately after the treatment, my skin felt dry and tight so Mandy applied a cold compress mask that worked in minutes. Before going to bed, I applied a bit more of the cooling gel and on waking the following morning, there was no tightness, redness or discomfort. “My skin is definitely already looking better, but it will take around four weeks to

see the full benefits. Another alternative to juicing is souping. People are seeking more texture and fibre from their fruits and vegetables and souping is a lot lower in sugar, has more nutritional and detoxifying benefits, plus it fills you up. The Ketogenic (Keto) is the trendiest new diet on the scene this year. It’s a high fat, low sugar diet which focuses on your body using fat as fuel. Keto enthusiasts praise the diet for its anti-inflammatory effects, neurological benefits and ability to increase energy levels while decreasing hunger pangs. Keeping fit in 2017 means the return of aerobics. As most people know, it’s a cardio workout where you can really let your hair down, and in the eighties it was made popular by Jane Fonda’s workout video and, of course, the outlandish outfits. #TeamAlfie THE LOCAL COMMUNITY SHOWED THEIR GENEROSITY AS THEY TURNED OUT FOR A WORTHWHILE CHARITY EVENT AT ROSSINGTON HALL. uests from Doncaster and beyond filled Rossington Hall on 16 December to support three-year-old Alfie Hughes, who has recently been diagnosed with neuroblastoma. The glittering occasion, organised by Chique owner Carolyn Poole, invited guests to enjoy a drinks reception and charity raffle, with many prizes donated by Carolyn’s staff and local businesses, before dancing the night away with a disco. In total they raised £1,000. “I would like to say a huge and heartfelt thank you to everyone who supported and attended the event,” says Carolyn. “To raise such a sum of money is incredible and a true testimony to the generosity of our local community. “The team at Rossington Hall did a fantastic job and we are very grateful for all their hard work. Everyone had a brilliant evening and we hope to do it all again next year.” Carolyn’s daughter, Olivia Poole, also

completed a 13,000 feet skydive to raise money for Alfie and managed to collect £850 for the worthy cause. “The jump was amazing and I wouldn’t hesitate to do it again,” says Olivia. “The amount of money we raised is amazing and I can’t thank everyone who donated enough. “Alfie is such a cheerful boy and has a great attitude towards everything he has to go through. If you want to keep up to date with his story or would like to donate, visit his Facebook page @TeamAlfieHughes.” All proceeds will go towards making lasting memories for Alfie and his family, ensuring he enjoys amazing experiences with his parents, Claire and Marcus and big sister, Faith while he is well enough. Fewer than 100 children in the UK are diagnosed each year with neuroblastoma and most children who get this cancer are younger than five years old. Neuroblastoma is the second most common solid tumour in childhood, and makes up eight per cent of the total number of children’s cancers.

All systems go THE BEST WAY TO EXPERIENCE QUEEN ETHELBURGA’S IS TO ATTEND ONE OF ITS OPEN DAYS. ou wouldn’t buy a car without going for a test drive or even consider putting an offer in for a house before having two viewings, so spending some time at a potential school for your child is absolutely crucial to get the feel that it is the right place. Time is tight in modern living and any good independent school will work hard to accommodate a family’s request to have a look at what goes on, in and out of the classroom, at a suitable time. But if getting there during the working week simply isn’t possible, then there is always the opportunity to visit during an open day on a weekend. Open days are a great chance to see the school when all systems are go. It is a way to see all the departments and facilities and to talk to students and staff to find out exactly what life is like on campus. Queen Ethelburga’s is an independent, day and boarding school at Thorpe Underwood near York. It is set in a 220-acre estate and surrounded by simply beautiful North Yorkshire countryside. But what makes Queen Ethelburga’s truly unique is the scale of everything. Its facilities really do have to be seen to be believed and without a doubt there is something to encourage, educate and entertain every single child coming through the gates. Olympic champions Alistair and Jonny Brownlee recently visited to officially open the Sports Village at Queen Ethelburga’s. The

Sports Village is a £30million complex and Alistair and Jonny Brownlee cut the ribbon on 34 acres of sports pitches which have been fully reconstructed. It comprises six astroturf pitches in total, eight natural turf pitches and six multi-use courts, all of which are floodlit. For the floodlighting alone there’s 101 columns, 604 lights and 480 miles of cable. The whole project has taken four years start to finish and the consultants involved in the project have hailed it as the largest private and most technologically advanced facility in the north of England. Sport of a different kind is available at Muggles, the students’ recreational centre and café. Whether it is challenging a friend to the assault course or the climbing wall or racing them round the bike track, go-karting track or inline skate course – there is never a dull moment there. If the North Yorkshire weather puts paid to outdoor activities, there is an extensive gaming area, DVD library, karaoke, DJ and instrument area and a 3D cinema for the latest releases. No expense has been spared in providing pupils with a similar calibre of facilities in the classroom. A science complex provides the perfect area to pursue the subjects, Home Economics has its own cookery school, the Business Department is impressive with designated work areas and boardrooms and there’s an extensive art and fashion department with a complete photographic studio and pottery kilns. When the school decided to improve its

drama and music department there was the installation of sound booths, mixing studios and performance classrooms as well as QE’s very own 330-seat theatre, complete with set areas, backstage dressing rooms and sound and light booth. With both QE College and The Faculty of Queen Ethelburga’s named as the top two schools in the North of England, and both in the country’s top 20, according to the Daily Telegraph’s Independent Schools’ League Table from A*/A A-Level and equivalent results in 2016, you can’t ignore the fact that QE now offers a world class education. The majority of Year 13 leavers go on to some of the world’s most prestigious universities, including Oxford and Cambridge and those belonging to the Russell and former 1994 group. The ethos of assessing every student individually and finding out what he or she enjoys or is good at, gives pupils the basis and confidence to pursue subjects at which they are successful. The Queen Ethelburga’s motto is “to be the best that I can with the gifts that I have” – with the next open day on Saturday 11 March – perhaps that’s a date for the diary to find out exactly how they achieve that.
