Why worry about your business all alone? Kevin Kerley, Chairman of the Sheffield City Region Academy for Chief Executives, says; “Its tough at the top. A bright future
WELCOME TO AN EXCITING NEW ERA AND A FRESH START FOR A BUSINESS CELEBRATING ITS 30TH ANNIVERSARY THIS MONTH. RMC Media is the new name for Regional Magazine Company, which was launched 30 years ago when the first issue of Westside, a quality lifestyle magazine for Sheffield and North Derbyshire, dropped on the doormats of 20,000 homes. Much has changed since then, and with a new website, a flourishing books division and a new online-only title called Vibe – as well as our stable of nine monthly lifestyle and business titles – the new company name is a more accurate reflection of the wide range of projects that come under the RMC umbrella. Over the following pages we’ll explain about the exciting changes afoot, as well as taking a look back at how we’ve grown over the years.
#30YearsofRMC PUBLISHERS OF WESTSIDE, SOUTHSIDE, NORTHSIDE, EASTSIDE, SIXER, IMAGE, PULSE, FIRST FOR BUSINESS & CITYMAG
BRAND NEW LOOK
Exciting times for RMC WE HAVE A NEW NAME, A NEW LOGO AND A NEW WEBSITE – WHAT BETTER WAY TO CELEBRATE 30 YEARS IN BUSINESS? ur 30th year marks an exciting new era for the company. The brand new name, RMC Media, comes with a vibrant new logo and a fresh new image to reflect the multi-faceted nature of our thriving business as it looks to the future.
O
Name Our journey began in 1986 with Westside magazine and, over the last three decades, has flourished into one of the most successful media companies in Yorkshire. Today, in addition to our eight monthly lifestyle titles, business magazine and numerous special publications, we also produce high quality cookbooks for prestigious chefs and restaurants, sell articles to like-minded publications, help budding

entrepreneurs establish their own magazines, and host glittering events. The name RMC Media draws on our wellestablished heritage while reflecting our propensity for exciting new projects. Under this new moniker, the future is bright for our dynamic team.
Logo Vibrant, multi-talented, forward-thinking: on these three pillars our new image was built. Working with Sheffield design agency Ink & Water, we established a logo that reflects the many different elements of RMC Media. The seven coloured shapes each represent an arm of the business: VIBE, magazines, books, restaurant guide, events, competitions and publishing services.
BRAND NEW LOOK
A window into our world WITH SHEFFIELD DIGITAL AGENCY HYDRA CREATIVE, WE HAVE LAUNCHED A BRAND NEW WEBSITE – WWW.RMCMEDIA.CO.UK – SHOWCASING THE WEALTH OF SERVICES RMC MEDIA OFFERS. VIBE A key feature of the new website – and an exciting new addition to the RMC Media portfolio – is VIBE, an online lifestyle magazinestyle website for Sheffield. For full details, turn to page 10.
MAGAZINES Each of our nine monthly titles now has its own microsite featuring digital page-turning versions of the magazine, as well as up-to-date news, articles and pictures that reflect and enhance the content of the printed publications.
RMC BOOKS Our book division has been operating as a successful publisher of high quality books for many years and now counts the likes of Chewton Glen, Simpsons, The Magpie Café, Crab House Café, Lakeland, Salvo’s, Westminster Kingsway College – and many, many more – among its satisfied clients. We’re now delighted to be bringing this aspect of the business under the banner of RMC Media.
RESTAURANT GUIDE Another brand new feature for the website is the restaurant guide, a comprehensive online guide to eating out in and around Yorkshire. From cafés and pubs to the region’s most prestigious dining establishments – and everything in between – it will include every kind of eatery available. Each entry comes with a short review, prices, opening hours, address details and a star rating so diners have all the information they need to make an informed choice.
COMPETITIONS Thousands of entries pour in for our competitions each month. From tickets for sold-out shows to luxury holidays to highly sought-after products, and much more, we always have something special up for grabs. Our most exciting competition to date, however, is open for online entries right now. To celebrate 30 years of RMC, we have 30 fantastic prizes from some of Yorkshire’s best businesses and one lucky person will win them all. See page 12 for all the details.
EVENTS Firmly established as key events in the Yorkshire foodie calendar, the Westside and Eastside Restaurant of the Year Awards recognise the wealth of culinary talent in our region. The annual ceremonies showcase these high standards and the awards themselves provide an exceptional promotional tool for the winners long after the champagne corks have popped. RMC Media also hosts special celebrations whenever the opportunity arises.
PUBLISHING SERVICES With so much experience under our belt, it is only fair that we share our expertise. With ‘Start Your Own Magazine’, we help new magazines get off the ground with all the information entrepreneurs need to launch a successful new publication. Through ‘Buy Magazine Articles’, we sell features to other high quality publications. In addition, we offer a host of other publicity and marketing solutions to businesses in Yorkshire and beyond.

RMC: A TIMELINE
July 1986 Westside Published in the summer of ‘86, the first edition of Westside was just 32 pages but, such was its popularity, within the year it had doubled in size. From the very beginning local restaurants played a key part and in the first issue Marvin Close served up a selection of his favourite tried and tested restaurants – Deakins and San Remo in Sheffield, Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese Inn and the George Restaurant and Hotel in Derbyshire all came up trumps. We have continued to support local restaurants over the years and now, the annual Westside Restaurant Awards, which celebrates the region’s finest, is one of the hottest events on the Sheffield social calendar. Our gossip column Gnome appeared very early on. This anonymous spy infiltrated the lives and parties of Westside people and gave readers a banquet of salacious gossip to feast upon. “Who is the Gnome?” became the question on everybody’s lips. Of course, we never told. In May 1989 Westside went on the hunt for the region’s most beautiful people. Women in the fashion business nominated from the ranks of men and Barnsley hairdresser Simon Nicholls was chosen for his effortless style. Managing director Tony Morgan was nominated by beautician Lynda Price who said: “He’s not a towering six footer but he’s got everything else and he looks good whatever he wears.” The first Westside June Guide was produced in 1991 to celebrate the World Student Games coming to Sheffield. This magazine is now an annual listings guide including restaurants, shops, and things to see and do in the region. Looking forward to the Millennium, in 1999 Westside got all geared up with its guide to the best Champagne. We gathered a panel of restaurateurs at Fischer’s Baslow Hall for a tasting. They tried 13 different bottles at varying prices and the winner was a budget bubbly, Tesco’s Champagne Brut. Westside has always tried to take a light-hearted approach wherever possible and in 2011 we cocked a snook at the recession with a typical quirky look at the various ways at which you could squander a lot of money very quickly. From buying a sports car with plummeting value to having your locks trimmed at a high-end salon, we discovered there’s plenty ways to splash the cash. Of course, none of Westside’s longevity would have been possible without the backing of our advertisers and some – including the likes of Blundells and PA Jewellery, who advertised in the very first issue – have been with us from the start.
“The Gnome infiltrated the lives and parties of Westside people and gave readers a banquet of salacious gossip to feast upon. ‘Who is the Gnome?’ became the question on everybody’s lips.”
June 1989 Eastside In the first issue of the quality magazine for Doncaster, Rotherham and North Notts we investigated the ins and outs of owning a racehorse, meeting a syndicate based in the Pilgrim Father pub in Scrooby, who paid £450 each for a part-share in a nag that might one day lead them to the winner’s enclosure. With our official partnership status with Doncaster Racecourse and the St Leger Festival, Eastside has retained a strong equine focus and the magazine regularly features upcoming race days and photos from the many events. We’ve always enjoyed a good gossip here at Eastside, and our resident party animal Toad has been at the heart of the social scene for a long time, making its debut in the spring of ‘97. Rather like Doctor Who, this is a beast that changes form every few years, but our appetite for party pictures and local lifestyle news never fades. The new millennium saw Eastside enjoying an exclusive face-to-face with Doncaster’s own Jeremy Clarkson. He was quick to deny national newspaper reports that he had been rude about his home town but, in the same breath, could not resist having a dig at Rotherham and Mexborough. Eastside has always kept a very close eye on the local dining scene and three years ago we stepped up our support Recipe for for the region’s fabulous restaurants with our first Eastside Rules of success attraction Restaurant Awards, which has enjoyed great success each True romance year at The Crown Hotel, Bawtry. With its many boutiques, restaurants and thriving community spirit, the market town of Bawtry lies at the heart Down the aisle... of Eastside Magazine. with other event speakers Paul McKenna and media mogul Jamal Edwards. Most recently, in last month’s issue, writer Andy Waple took a look at the Sheffield Olympic Legacy Park, which will be built on the former site of Don Valley Stadium. This £55million project will nurture the region’s sports research and development, health and wellbeing, as well as providing a school, college and some small stadia to support basketball and rugby. With world-class venues such as the English Institute of Sport already in place, the development of the Olympic Legacy Park will be the final piece of the Lower Don Valley Jigsaw. FFB has survived in an era in which many print publications have become obsolete. This is a clear reflection that FFB has always delivered what its readers want and has a strong standing within the local business community.

OLYMPICS: A GOLDEN OPPORTUNITY FOR BUSINESS?
first for business THE OFFICIAL MAGAZINE FOR THE SHEFFIELD CHAMBER OF COMMERCE
LEADING THE BUSINESS DEBATE IN SHEFFIELD CITY REGION
August 1994 Sixer From fun, local features, and interviews with the likes of Sheffield Wednesday women’s team captain Steph Spence in 1999, to more serious topics, like how local businesses bounced back after the flood of 25 June 2007, Sixer has been at the heart of North Sheffield. In March 2004 we selflessly went in search of Hillsborough’s tastiest pork sandwiches. Four sandwich shops were put to the test. Baps from the Hungry Wolf, Béres Pork Shop, Biltons and Lily’s were all judged on quality of meat, bread, stuffing and sauce. Béres (which has been around since 1961) was declared the winner, with Lily’s in second place, and Biltons and Hungry Wolf in joint third. Always keen to keep in touch with local celebs, in January 2008 we caught up with Chapeltown lad Steve Peat. He grew up riding in Wharncliffe Woods and trained as an apprentice plumber, and it was his boss who introduced him to his first race. By 2008 he was twice World Champion, seven times British Champion and twice European Champion. In October 2011 we featured amateur dramatic society, the Stannington Players, who were celebrating 60 years of entertaining locals with quality theatre. The group has a rich history that dates back to just after the war; they actually began as a play-reading society in people’s houses. There were many name changes over the years but the group formally formed as the Stannington Players in 1951. TOUR In 2014 the Tour De France was one of – if not the – biggest DE FRANCE events to ever grace the rolling hills of North Sheffield. This N o r t h S hef fi el d all-cycling issue featured a Tour De France guide, an we lc o m e s t h e wo r l d ’ s greatest cycle race explanation of the jerseys, an interview with Team Sky’s Ben Swift, cycling fashion and a feature on the Bradfield Hill Climb. First For Business (FFB) delivers the latest business news and views from the Sheffield City Region to the desks of business leaders in South Yorkshire and the North Midlands. It offers a strong, independent voice which has given it a standing within the local business community since it launched over 25 years ago. While plenty has changed over the last 26 years, much of what matters to the business community remains the same. As far back as 1990 hot topics included transport, manufacturing and city centre regeneration. Sound familiar? Of course, these are the issues that matter when you are trying to make your city – or region – as economically successful as possible and no doubt in years to come we’ll still be discussing them. And we’re sure you’ll be reading all about them in FFB! Here are some highlights from the last 26 years. In March 1995 we ran a feature about the way new trademark laws (introduced in the 1994 Trade Marks Act) were making things easier for companies. The same issue included a feature on the latest phase of the Victoria Quays project including news that Nabarro Nathanson would occupy newly-built offices on the site. The following year we asked: should businesses be on the internet? There followed a detailed explanation of the various uses of the internet, including a relatively unknown form of communication: the ‘email’. Would it ever catch on? We thought it had a chance. Back in June 2008 the cover of now-monthly FFB featured none other than Sheffield golden girl Jessica Ennis-Hill. Andy Waple wrote: ‘Jessica Ennis, one of Britain’s top athletes cruelly robbed of an Olympic challenge in Beijing, is a perfect example of the new kind of export that is helping to reinforce the message that Made in Sheffield is still an international mark of quality’. As well as a keen focus on business news, FFB has interviewed some influential business people, including former director-general of the BBC, chairman of the Football Association and Sheffield hotelier Greg Dyke and TV Dragon James Caan, who was FFB’s cover star in 2010. He shared his views on business in an accompanying interview. In September 2014, FFB became an official media partner for MADE: The Entrepreneur Festival. This issue featured speaker Michelle Mone on the cover and included interviews

RMC: A TIMELINE
November 1995 Northside Northside’s first issue was delivered to select homes in Leeds in November 1995 and, by June 1996, it was also being read in York and Harrogate. The cover of the inaugural edition featured Emmerdale actor Ian Kelsey, who had been judged Leeds’ most eligible bachelor by our editorial team. In the same year, Ian was nominated for Most Popular Newcomer in the National Television Awards for his role as Dave Glover in the soap. We picked a winner whose good looks have stayed on our screens, more recently Ian has appeared in Doctors as Howard Bellamy. Also in that first issue we reviewed two of the area’s best-loved restaurants at the time. Paris at Calverley was praised for its deep fried prawns in filo pastry, with cinnamon and ginger chutney starter and roast lamb joint. Northside predicted Paris would ‘thrive on its own genuine individuality for years to come’ and we were right; Paris continued to flourish for 12 years after our review. Our dish of the month came from The Drum and Monkey in Harrogate. Fillet of whiting with crab stuffing and glazed hollandaise was on the menu, and The Drum and Monkey’s chef Tina Nuttall explained how Northsiders could recreate the dish at home. At the time the
restaurant had been running for 23 years after being transformed from a pub, and today it is still a strong favourite for seafood in Harrogate. From fine dining to fast cars, motoring has always been a big part of Northside, and over the years we have put a host of luxury cars through their paces. In 2015, to coincide with the launch of the latest James Bond movie Spectre, Northside’s Adam Kay was given the opportunity to live out his Bond fantasies behind the wheel of the latest Aston Martin, the DB9 GT model. Our reporter was also treated to a viewing of one of Bond’s most iconic cars, the Aston Martin DB10, and a chat with Bond stunt driver Mark Higgins.

A magazine for young city dwellers in Sheffield. The latest trends, hotspots and events have always been a mainstay of City. The Hipster pages keep readers up to date on new additions to the city’s bar, restaurant, music, arts and fashion scenes. City has featured some of the biggest names in popular culture since its inception. In the first year alone the magazine spoke to hairdresser Nicky Clarke, chef Raymond Blanc and actor Christopher Eccleston. Ian Brown, Tinie Tempah, Duffy, Joan Rivers and Ellie Goulding have all graced the pages of City; more recently the magazine spoke to pop superstar Meghan Trainor. Sheffield’s annual inner city music festival Tramlines has taken up a residency in City; the magazine has stood at the festival’s side as it’s grown in both popularity and size since it began in 2009. City features illustrations as its cover, often by local artists. April 2016 issue featured a design from renowned Sheffield artist Pete McKee ahead of his hugely popular Six Weeks to Eternity exhibition at Magna Science Adventure Centre, whilst other editions have featured work from local illustrators including Tom J Newell, Faunagraphic and Grace Louise Taylor. >

RMC: A TIMELINE
June 2002 Image Image was launched in June 2002 as a new voice for the Sheffield area surrounding Crystal Peaks, Mosborough and Handsworth. In our first year we interviewed Trisha Cooper. A popular voice on our radios at the time, Eckington based Trisha co-hosted the BBC Sheffield breakfast show and then went on to produce radio all over Yorkshire. In the same issue we spoke to rock and roll legend Dave Berry. In 2012 we caught up with Dave again, after what he described as the “the best ten years of my career” and he was still playing music too, performing around the world but for relaxation he was selling antiques in Sheffield. Image often champions promising local musicians and The Mosborough Music Festival has been a summer highlight since it began in 2010. Image has had a long and harmonious relationship with Crystal Peaks, producing shopping guides at important times of the year such as Valentine’s and Christmas. Crystal Peaks celebrated its 25-year anniversary with us in 2013, and in 2014 we featured the centre’s famous bees who have set up home on the roof. Our reporter met the couple who take care of the hundreds of thousands of honey makers buzzing around the roof of one of Imageland’s biggest landmarks.

March 2003 Southside Southside launched in March 2003 and has been a household name in Chesterfield, Dronfield and surroundings areas since. In 2004 we focused on the historic Flagg Races, the UK’s only remaining horse race meeting to feature a cross-country race on natural hunting ground. The Chatsworth International Horse Trials are also a Southside regular and the world renowned equestrian event fills the magazine’s pages with previews of dressage, cross country races and show jumping each summer. Southside has featured some of the area’s most talented sportsmen before they’ve made the bigtime; in 2004 we featured 12-year-old golf whizz Scott Campbell who told us his dreams of one day becoming a professional. Today Scott has accomplished his dream and travels the world playing the sport he loves. Chesterfield FC’s star striker Jack Lester was interviewed ahead of his team’s 2-0 victory over Swindon at Wembley in 2012. Chesterfield won the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy that year. Southside featured the Spireites later on in 2012 but this time it was because their home ground was being taken over by the rocket man himself, Elton John. The megastar played to a sell-out crowd at the then B2net stadium in his first and only gig in Chesterfield to date.

PULSE AT THE HEART OF YOUR COMMUNITY
AUGUST 2013 Issue 6
Pulse was launched in 2013 and went straight to the heart of the Chapeltown and Ecclesfield community, where it has remained ever since. In its first issue Pulse featured the Chapeltown Forum. The official aim of the group was to champion the needs of the Chapeltown area and in talking about the group in the magazine, Pulse supported and promoted a great community cause, setting a trend that has continued through the magazine to the present. Later in 2013 the magazine featured the Grenoside Reading
8
Room, and spoke to the group of volunteers who took the building on when it was handed to the community. They transformed it into a heritage centre which has grown to become a hub of the community today. In 2015 Pulse met the volunteers who saved Eccesfield Library and managed to protect the library’s future after the council were forced to make cuts to the service. Alongside charitable community causes and events, Pulse has featured some of the area’s most interesting characters, including: entrepreneurs, such as Nose Warmer inventor Sally
Steel-Jones who featured in 2013; creative types, such as the Capelle Floral Art Society in 2015 and treasure-hunting gold panner Peter Sampson, who featured in Pulse’s June issue. Pulse’s sports champions have not been overlooked. We spoke to Betty Codona, the lady responsible for putting women’s basketball on the map in 2014, in 2015 the spotlight was on four lady golfers from Sheffield and Barnsley who were taking on the Longest Day Golf Challenge for Macmillan Cancer Support.

WWW.SHEFFIELDVIBE.CO.UK ‘Shouting about Sheffield’ is the tagline of RMC Media’s brand new lifestyle website, VIBE. Updated daily, and with a strong presence on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram, VIBE offers an up-to-theminute picture of life in the heart of the city. From interviews with the people behind the events, exhibitions, festivals and businesses that make the city tick to event previews to restaurant reviews – and lots more – it is the go-to website for the people of Sheffield to find out what’s happening on their doorstep. The site revolves around three key areas. ‘Food & Drink’ features everything from new restaurant and bar openings to restaurant reviews and trends. ‘Watch, Listen, Do’ is the cultural and creative section, covering previews and reviews of all the great things to do in the city and beyond. ‘Movers & Makers’ profiles the people who make the city such a vibrant place to live, work and study. With guest bloggers and local contributors on board, we have also opened up the portal to others, providing a platform for the city’s creative talent to shout about their passions and skills. With nine monthly lifestyle magazines, special publications, a thriving book division, two hugely successful restaurant awards and sought-after competitions already under our belt – not to mention the dedicated team of staff bringing this all together – we are in the best possible position to deliver something we think Sheffield really needs. @VIBE_Sheffield We also welcome ideas and inspirations from across the city. If there’s something you think VIBE should be covering, let our digital editor Stephanie Burns know on facebook.com/VIBE-Sheffield stephanie.burns@rmcmedia.co.uk. 30 HAPPY RETURNS
Chris Wilson with Jo Hercberg
Giving something back AS PART OF OUR 30TH CELEBRATIONS, STAFF AT RMC MEDIA WILL BE VOLUNTEERING THEIR SERVICES FOR MANY LOCAL GOOD CAUSES OVER THE COMING YEAR. THE FIRST TO STEP UP IS MANAGING EDITOR CHRIS WILSON. ere at RMC Media we’ve always tried to do our bit to make the world a better place, raising money for national and local good causes through cake sales, quizzes and charity days... and we will always continue to do so. But to celebrate our 30th year in business, we are also looking to do something a little different. This time, rather than shaking the charity tin and asking others to contribute, we’ll be getting stuck in and making our own practical contribution to the many good local causes that are close to our hearts. 30 Happy Returns is RMC Media’s modest way of putting something back into our community. As individuals and collectively, we will be going out and about over the next year, doing anything from litter picking to volunteering in animal shelters. We’ll return to this story regularly over the coming months and you can see how we get on, both in the magazines and on our website. You may spot us out and about in the community – we’ll be wearing the rather snazzy t-shirts worn by managing editor Chris Wilson (see above). Meanwhile, to get the ball rolling, Chris spent some time volunteering at a new cafe that takes a unique approach to sourcing ingredients.
H
The Real Junk Food Project, Sheffield So how do I find myself wiping down tables and chopping vegetables in a café where people are invited to ‘pay what they feel’ for their meal? It starts with the fact that 15 million tonnes of food is ditched in the UK every year. That’s three wheelie bins of food per person, making us the most wasteful nation in the EU. Food for thought – especially when, like me, you are fortunate enough to have a job that involves quite a lot of eating out in rather nice restaurants across Yorkshire and North Derbyshire. I first became aware of The Real Junk Food Project, Sheffield last summer when a friend told me she had spent the day after Tramlines, a weekend music festival in Sheffield, helping out in a pop-up restaurant where the main ingredients consisted of food left over after the bands moved on and the fans went home. The food was not past its sell-by date or contaminated in any way, but after events like this, the simplest thing for the vendors was simply to dump it and move on to the next event. Most of it was destined to end up in a landfill site. A small band of volunteer chefs, kitchen hands, pot washers and general helpers was trying to do something about this. Diners could pay what they could afford, or what they thought the meal was worth. Those who believed in the cause and could afford it might decide to pay more; those with empty pockets could volunteer, washing dishes in return for food. It turned out this pop-up restaurant was far from a one-off but part of a movement that began when Leeds-born chef Adam Smith found himself working on a farm in Australia where he witnessed the vast scale of food waste, in
agriculture and the catering industry. He came home and set up a café in Armley, Leeds, in 2013. There are now 95 across the country, staffed by volunteers cooking food that would otherwise go to waste, donated by local businesses, supermarkets, catering events, local households, food banks, farms and wholesalers. The Real Junk Food Project, Sheffield is now a year old and has grown from pop-up events to having its own café, at Regather Works on Club Garden Road, very close to London Road’s bustling array of restaurants, pubs and shops. Project director Jo Hercberg spent a decade in the online travel industry before deciding to leave the corporate world and do something she really believed in. The café is staffed by volunteers whilst food comes from local businesses, supermarkets, catering events, local households, food banks, farms and wholesalers. “Hopefully there will be pay-as-you-feel cafés all over the country soon,” says Jo. “But if the message spreads, and people start to think and act more about food waste, there will come a time when they close down because they won’t be needed.” As for my own small contribution, a morning spent wiping down and setting tables, putting the chalk boards outside and making a salad to go with the lunchtime quiches that Jo had cooked the previous day, was rewarding, and fun too. The Real Junk Food Project, Sheffield’s café is at Regather Works (57-59 Club Garden Road, Sheffield, S11 8BU). Open Thursday and Friday, 11am-8pm and Sunday 11am-3pm. realjunkfoodsheffield.com

TESTIMONIALS
Success stories “As a director in Sheffield’s charity sector for many years I look to Westside and FFB to keep me in the picture. I need to know what is happening and, more important, who is making it happen! The magazines always have a finger on the pulse of the corporate, political and social scene, giving an honest and unbiased opinion. Over many years as a director at Whirlow Hall Farm, Freeman College and The Lyceum Theatre Trust, I have benefitted from their support of our fundraising campaigns and of the Sheffield charitable sector in general. They are a great team and long may their great work continue.“ David Heugh. Chairman, THE LYCEUM THEATRE TRUST
“RMC Media is a great supporter of local businesses and Bradfield Brewery has benefited from this support. The Sixer magazine in particular has supported our business not just with advertising but with editorial features and joint projects. We like to show solidarity within the local business sector and RMC Media provides an ideal platform for us to sit alongside other local businesses and encourages consumers to shop local.” Lisa Moat, BRADFIELD BREWERY
“We have advertised with Northside for a few years now and have received two editorials written by Phoebe Seymour. The way Phoebe has captured the work we do with vulnerable people and how she has described what we are trying to do here has been wonderful. We have seen a direct correlation to the distribution of the magazine and footfall increasing. The placement of the magazine has also proved successful with customers visiting after receiving it at home, as well as finding it in business locations such as private hospitals. ” Buffy Parkinson, CARING FOR LIFE
“The Crown Hotel has advertised with Eastside since the very beginning. Being ‘the’ social magazine of the local area to Bawtry, it has always been important for the Crown to have a consistent message within the magazine – this usually comprising of a DPS each month plus the social side of what’s been happening at the Crown and in Bawtry. A big part of this also has been the Visit Bawtry supplement, which appears quarterly. Stephanie Burns has been our contact for editorial and has always been extremely professional, prompt and articulate. She just ‘gets us’. Writing about the Crown each month, Stephanie has a total feel for all things Crown. She knows who we are and what we are about. She is almost part of the team! Once the pieces are written, we are then handed over to Terri for design and it always results in a great, readable DPS. We send Terri what’s been happening at the Crown – balls, dinners, wedding events, new restaurant menus and racing, to name just a few of the many goings on. We have also been extremely honoured to have started and hosted the Eastside Restaurant Awards with Terri and the team. Each year the event grows and grows and is one of the biggest nights in the area for all eateries and restaurants. To sum up, Eastside magazine hits our target markets and enables us to promote weddings, the restaurant, the bar and any events we have going on at the hotel. It works, and this is why we have been a loyal customer every month for years. So happy 30th, team Eastside, from the team at the Crown Hotel Bawtry!” THE CROWN HOTEL, Bawtry
“Westside are a great company to deal with. Leah in particular couldn’t be more helpful and understands what her clients are trying to achieve in their advertising.” Jennifer Beal, sales manager, ELR LETTINGS
“Passion… commitment… energy… Come on Sheffield! Thank you to Mel and the team on behalf of everyone at Atkinsons for your continued support. We’re all in this together.” David Cartwright, store manager, ATKINSONS
“We have been advertising in Image magazine for several years now, on a monthly basis. Claire is very accommodating and always produces accurate work from any copy we send over, nothing is too much trouble and we are very pleased with the prompt service. Advertising in the Image certainly works for us.” Mandy Tyler, sales, marketing and events manager, SITWELL ARMS
“We have been advertising in Image for some time now and find that it is great brand awareness for us as a company, a good talking point in our appointments and a great platform to showcase our efforts in the community. Steph has been assisting me with the editorial pages we run in the magazine monthly and my column ‘ask the expert’. She always has a very forward-thinking and enthusiastic approach to our page and I am always excited to hear and see her ideas and outcome. To say I am pleased every month would be an understatement. I feel that Steph is valued asset to the RMC Media and it is a pleasure dealing with her.” Samuel Reaney, branch manager of HAYBROOK CRYSTAL PEAKS
“On behalf of myself and the management group I would like to take the opportunity to say a great big thank you for your hard work at First For Business magazine. We are delighted with all the work you have accomplished, and in particular Charles for his patience working with the brand colour scheme to develop the folders etc. We look forward to a long working relationship, it is a pleasure to work with professionals who are also nice people. It has been a particularly challenging workload for us in this past few weeks and your help has been invaluable.” Beryl Henshaw, managing director, B&E TOGETHER LTD.

How do you select the right manager for your investment success?
Successful investment, whether it is in the form of pension provision, capital creation or income preservation, is critical to your future well-being but it presents a unique challenge as future performance is unpredictable.
As a Partner Practice of St. James’s Place Wealth Management I have access to the distinctive St. James’s Place approach to investment management. Unlike most other financial services companies, St. James’s Place do not employ in-house fund managers. Lakeside lifestyle
Doncaster’s Lakeside is a hive of activity, with everything from events and business to retail and property. By Molly McGreevy.
T
he summer months are looking busy at Lakeside, with exciting events, new stores and home development all underway in the area. Doncaster Tourism and Rotary Club of St George’s are hosting a Dragon Boat Challenge on 9 July at the lake, and in
September the British Jet Ski championships will also be held there. For those in need of refreshment after a day on the lake, Lakeside Village has a new drive-through Costa, to join the Nandos and Pizza Express that opened in 2015. A new access road makes getting to Lakeside from Bawtry and Rossington much easier.
The Lakeside business park is booming with local and international businesses including Andrew Isaacs solicitors, Handelsbanken, Reel 10 and many more. For those who want to be in on the action, new home developments are springing up in and around Lakeside, with homes suitable for all.
Lakeside Village Lakeside Village is the place to be this summer. Home to more than 45 famous-name stores, offering discounts up to 60 per cent on men’s, women’s and children’s fashion, sportswear, gifts, homeware and accessories. All of this is set out across a spacious, peaceful environment, with free parking, where you can get great bargains and spend valuable time with friends and family, too. M&S Outlet, Next Clearance, Gap Outlet and Clarks are just some of the fantastic stores at the retail outlet shopping centre and, if you’re after a bite to eat or a refreshing drink, they’ve got plenty of food and drink outlets to choose from, including Costa Coffee, Greggs and Thornton’s Café. 2016 is a big year for the Regional Magazine Company (RMC) as we launch our 30th anniversary celebrations - and we are looking for other businesses who have managed to stand the test of time to join in the fun. Our story started way back in 1986 when the first copy of our first magazine, Westside, was published. We’ve grown considerably since then into a company that publishes nine monthly lifestyle and business titles across Yorkshire, North Notts and North Derbyshire, as well as publishing books for some of Great Britain’s most prestigious restaurants. We also have a strong online presence and we’ll be celebrating our 30th with a major relaunch of our website. 1986 was the year Prince Andrew married Sarah Ferguson, Gary Lineker set a UK transfer record when he moved to Barcelona for £2.75million, Margaret Thatcher opened the M25 and the first episode of Casualty was aired. Since then, as anyone who has been in business the same length of time will know, there have been good times as well as upsets, recessions and major changes across the world. So, if you also set up your business in the year of 1986, congratulations on standing the test of time and here’s a birthday gift from RMC for you. We are offering a free advert in one of our titles. There’s no catch - it’s as simple as that. Contact: jillion.wood@regionalmagazine.co.uk to find out more.

However in 1985 it closed and stood empty until 1986, when it was converted into a cinema. In 1992, once again it closed, re-opening briefly again in 1993. It was in 1996 when a small dedicated team worked tirelessly to return it to its former glory and make it the success it is today, run entirely by volunteers. Something for everyone Rebranding put North Nottinghamshire back on the map. Now the area is hoping for a bright future as a tourist destination. Molly McGreevy’s been exploring its host of fantastic attractions.
T
he founders of American democracy, Nottinghamshire’s most famous outlaw and four dukes have all called it home, but North Nottinghamshire has undergone something of a makeover in the last few years in the hope of attracting a new wave of tourism to the area. Nestled in between the three counties of South Yorkshire, Derbyshire and Lincolnshire the area used to be known as Bassetlaw, but nobody really knew where Bassetlaw was or what was going on there. So in 2013, North Nottinghamshire was born, uniting the towns and villages that make up the county through shared stories and a shared vision for the future. Worksop, the largest town in the area, is a bustling market town which hosts three thriving markets each week. Relocating to Bridge Street and Bridge Place in 2014, the markets have boomed in popularity with customers hunting for everything from fresh fruit and vegetables to cosmetics to a new outfit for their dog. Jo-Anne Harrop has had a stall at Worksop market for 12 years, and her reputation exceeds the borders of North Notts; she’s busy selling a young Londoner a hairpiece for Ascot Ladies Day when I arrive at her stall. Jo-Anne pinpoints the market’s relocation as the key to its success, she said: “Since it moved from the top of town it has been much better, things weren’t going well where we were before. The people of Worksop use local markets to do their shopping, they don’t go to Meadowhall or the big cities, which is very good for us.” Just down the road is Retford, which
46
hosts a popular farmers’ market where a variety of local produce is on sale. On Fridays, browsers can seek out bargains at the antiques and bric-a-brac market. Another great place for local produce is The Hub, Churchgate, which stocks arts, crafts and food from more than 130 local people and is home to 150 feet of art hanging space and artist’s studios. The local honey is particularly popular during the summer months as it helps ease the symptoms of hayfever. The Hub was opened in 2015, after the council closed the local tourist information centres. Chris Daniels now leads a team of 35 people who take it in turn to man the shop six days a week, and says The Hub has received huge support from the community. Chris said: “We are here to bring visitors into Retford by shouting about the town, the people and the events. We have a lot of people coming to spend the day here from bigger towns and cities in South Yorkshire, Nottinghamshire, Lincolnshire and Derbyshire.” As well as great shopping, Retford is steeped in history and there’s no better place to start than at The Hub, where Chris and his
team are keen to share their knowledge of the town. They point you to the start of Retford’s history trail; which encompasses all of Retford’s rich heritage and beautiful scenery. A stroll around the town reveals fine Georgian and Victorian houses and a large number of former coaching inns, a reminder of the town’s prosperous past. Retford isn’t the only place in North Nottinghamshire which boasts great views. Just a short drive through the countryside is picturesque Blyth, which is home to some great pubs for a sunny, Sunday lunchtime. Just South of Blyth is Hodsock Priory, which signals the start of spring in North Nottinghamshire with its annual bloom of snowdrops. Millions of flowers cover Hodsock’s grounds and visitors flock from all over the UK to witness the spectacle. A great way to spend a summer’s day in North Nottinghamshire is to go on a scenic drive, taking in the charming villages of Torworth, Scrooby, Barnby Moor and Ranby. The quaint villages are full of interesting local businesses, which can be explored in an afternoon.

Jo-Anne Harrop on her Worksop market stall
‘The people of Worksop use local markets to do their shopping, they don’t go to Meadowhall or the big cities, which is very good for us.’ North Nottinghamshire is often dubbed the Gateway to the Dukeries because of its proximity to four ducal estates: Clumber Park, Welbeck Abbey, Thoresby Hall and Worksop Manor. Worksop Manor was destroyed by the Duke of Northumberland when he purchased it in the 19th century, but you can still visit the other three. They are a great day out for all the family to learn about the area’s rich past and explore the rolling countryside they stand in. A day spent in North Nottinghamshire is one full of idyllic countryside and rich heritage, make sure to talk to the locals, who are passionate about history and beauty of the area. Local businesses are always worth a visit, the area is home to hundreds of makers, artists, cooks and creatives producing artisan products from local resources. There truly is something for everyone in North Nottinghamshire.

ES Interview
‘A touching experience’ Encouraged out of retirement, ballet dancers Shannon and Peter Parker captured the hearts of the nation on Britain’s Got Talent. Tom Wood speaks to the Ollerton couple about their comeback and how they’re nurturing the stars of the future.
I
t’s never too late to pick up the ballet shoes. Just ask Shannon and Peter Parker who retired from ballet for ten years, but returned to the stage to reach the finals of Sky1’s Got To Dance in 2014 and this year’s Britain’s Got Talent. The couple, who are married and live in Ollerton, met when they were dancing at the Northern Ballet Theatre after Shannon moved from her hometown Las Vegas to England to pursue her dreams. They then danced together for several years before hanging up their ballet slippers as they brought up their daughter Jamie (19) and son Tristan (ten) and focused on teaching dance. But after ten years out, a producer from Got To Dance convinced the couple to come out of retirement to enter Sky’s show after they saw a video of the two dancing. Shannon said: “They [Got To Dance] called me and said: Would you by any chance think about putting yourself forward. And I said: Are you joking? I’m 48 years old, I have been retired for ten years, there’s no way I could do it.” Nevertheless, they both decided to take a leap and took the show by storm when they reached the final. With confidence flowing, Peter and

Shannon then entered Britain’s Got Talent, where they captured the hearts of the nation with their romantic and emotional performances. “It’s the most touching experience we have encountered in our careers,” Shannon said. “The fact we had so much support from the public and the judges was incredible. “The people who watch Got To Dance are really into dance, but with BGT there’s a variety of people. We wanted to keep putting ballet on the map and just because you’re a certain age, you don’t have to stop doing what you’re passionate about.” Peter and Shannon picked up a lot of praise during the show. David Walliams described their performances as ‘beautiful and intimate’ while Simon Cowell claimed he had ‘never seen anything like it.. Even though they both became household names on the show, they still found it a little strange meeting the judges. “It was weird! We met Simon Cowell backstage and he was lovely. Alesha Dixon also passed us once and said ‘I’m so glad you guys are in the show’,” said Shannon. The ballet pair put their achievements down to the hard work they put in to get back into shape for both talent shows. Shannon’s daily routine consists of going to the gym twice a day, dance practice, teaching and being a busy mum. “It takes a long time to rediscover the muscles that you lose and for me, the hardest part was the pointe work because I hadn’t been on pointe for ten years,” said Shannon. “Once we got back into shape we just maintained that and we kind of feel like we’re getting better as we get older.” While being physically fit no doubt played a huge part in their recent success, the nation also fell for their real-life love story – they have been married for 15 years. “I would say the three ingredients for a happy marriage are humour, passion and…
you’ve got to like the person,” said Shannon. “It’s nice to be in someone’s company you still enjoy so much, even after you’ve been married for so many years. It sounds simple but it’s true.” As well as dedication to building back their fitness, the couple also had to come up with top class productions to impress the judges. “When it comes to choreography we just bounce off each other and produce something together,” said Shannon. “I usually find the music, although Peter chose Chasing Cars for BGT, which was an absolutely genius move because people really relate to that song.” The dancing couple are now focusing on nurturing some of the next crop of talent with their associate programme, Midlands Associates and their OPES summer school, which takes place in Ranby. “We developed our summer school five years ago because teaching is our passion and what we want to do is nurture the future ballet dancers of the world.” The stars of the future might be closer to home than Shannon and Peter first thought as their daughter Jamie is part of a contemporary dance school in London while Tristan has just started dancing. “Jamie had always wanted to dance, but Tristan never showed much interest until recently so we didn’t push it. We thought if it comes around and he wants to do it then great, but now he’s found the love for it so we’re just encouraging that.” OPES summer school is on 31 July to 21 August. It offers classes on contemporary, classical ballet, new classical ballet, as well as guest choreographers Ryan Jenkins from So You Think You Can Dance and Josh Pilmore on Got To Dance. ES Eating Out
Adventure on a plate Chris Wilson finds exciting contemporary food in a historic setting. t is difficult to imagine a more versatile dining venue in the Eastside region than Ye Olde Bell, the four star hotel just off the A1 between Retford and Doncaster. If you have lived in the area for any length of time you’ve probably eaten there before, perhaps for a formal function, wedding or family celebration. With a history dating back to the 17th century and all the traditional comforting touches we associate with dining establishments that have stood the test of time – oak panelling, leaded windows, open fires and plush fabrics – Ye Olde Bell ticks all the boxes. But that is only half the story. Relaxed dining seems to be the watchword here with a versatile menu of crowd-pleasing pub classics, light snacks, a la carte dishes and daily specials to suit most tastes and budgets. You can mix and match whether you eat in the light and airy bistro, the chic 1650 restaurant, in the garden or on the terrace. And with new head chef Tim Stamp eager to make his mark and incorporate his passion for adventurous cooking it is clear that this former coaching inn certainly is not stuck in a time warp. We ate on a gorgeous summer evening that allowed for a pre-dinner stroll in the grounds and the chance to spy from a discreet distance as a wedding party (catered by a separate banqueting kitchen) spilled out into the garden. It wasn’t quite warm enough to sit on the terrace, but with the sun streaming through the bistro windows we found the perfect spot to eat and enjoy a rare sunny evening in this soggy summer. As well as the regular menu, itself packed with variety, there were daily specials and a ‘celebrate English wine week’ menu, so no shortage of choice as we sat in the impressive reception, sipping prosecco and making our choices. A big impression was made from the first mouthful. Soup of the day, Thai carrot,

Meanwhile a starter of pork-crusted salmon, chosen purely because it sounded so daringly different, scored highly for both taste and texture. This was a savoury treat, with a crunchy powdered pork coating on very fresh, moist salmon, beautifully balanced by a slightly sweet lemon puree and apple and endive salad. This is what Tim, only 27 but something of a veteran since he started working in kitchen restaurants at the age of 12, describes as molecular gastronomy – creating new dishes with different tastes and textures, using the kitchen as a science lab. The experiment certainly worked – this unusual starter was a talking point all the way home.
For mains I had a juicy sirloin steak, cooked rare as requested with all the trimmings including super crunchy breaded onion rings. My friend Kirsten, who worked for several years in a seafood restaurant and is decidedly picky about her fish, was unstinting in her praise for a beautiful plate of baked lemon sole, served with wild spinach, confit tomato, celeriac mash and a rather special smoked ham and butter sauce. It looked spectacular too. Desserts gave us the opportunity to sample some delicious coconut ice-cream and a selection of rhubarb treats, and the very well-balanced wine list offered up a zingy, lemon-fresh bottle of Picpoul, the perfect wine for summer in my book.

Journey into the unknown
Blue cheese ice cream anyone? Fiona Barber tries this unusual combination and more at The Separatist Inn.
B
eing the new kid on the block is never easy, but The Separatist Inn in Torworth is already proving its worth with eclectic modern cuisine served in relaxed contemporary surroundings. Located in the small Bassetlaw village on the main Great North Road between Bawtry and Retford, the former Huntsman Inn has been transformed into a new 90-cover gastro pub and restaurant, which opened its doors in February this year. With executive chef Darren Rogan – who was awarded the prestigious AA Rosette during his time at the Tower Hotel and Restaurant in Lincoln – behind the menu, it’s no surprise innovation and creativity lie at the heart of many of their dishes. Customers are really spoilt for choice with a pub twist and grill menu and modern bistro options from the chef’s recommendations. On our visit one Friday evening we chose from the latter. I kicked off with the shallot tatin – I knew I was in for a treat when our waitress absolutely insisted one of us try it. “People are put off by the blue cheese ice cream, but it really is delicious,” she said. Delicious doesn’t do this wonderful creation justice. I’m practically salivating at the memory. Rich, creamy, and melt-in-your mouth good, the Harrogate blue ice cream perfectly complemented the moist pear tart – and the accompanying balsamic raisins – both sharp and sweet – were pretty damn good too. I was almost too busy with my plate to notice my companion tucking into her crab mayonnaise, but the unusual combination of
54
seafood and honeycomb caught my eye. “It shouldn’t work, but it really does,” she enthused between forkfuls. For mains, my sea bream was just as good. Two crisp-skinned fillets were served with al dente baby leeks, a fragrant tarragon potato cake, and a rich red wine reduction – all elements that worked beautifully to produce a top-class dish. A chilled glass of New Zealand Sauvignon, with a crisp fresh finish, was the ideal match to enjoy with this delicious fish dish. My partner ordered the pork belly – a real feast for the eyes. Creamy sage mash and off-white onion custard contrasted wonderfully against the dark jus and the green micro apple. These elements, together with the succulent belly pork, offered flavours and textures that complemented each other brilliantly. Desserts here are a real work of art. The blueberry panna cotta was as smooth as untouched snow and the ricotta cheesecake was skilfully deconstructed with a beurre noisette crumb, pistachio meringues and a refreshing orange sorbet. As well as the many excellent and intriguing dishes at The Separatist, it’s good to know you can pop in to their relaxing lounge bar for a good old fashioned beer if you fancy; there’s a good variety of draught beers and lagers along with some nice local craft bottled beers too. The Separatist Inn is open seven days a week for both lunch and dinner, so whether you’re in search of a great steak, or you haven’t experienced the joys of blue cheese ice cream yet, this gastro pub is well worth a visit.

ES Eating Out
From birthdays to footie, there’s always quite a buzz at this popular eaterie, writes Molly McGreevy.
Relish-ing the celebration
S
pirits were high and drinks were flowing in celebration of an England football victory when we first arrived at Relish and we were quickly seated close to the open kitchen; away from footie fever in one of Relish’s sleek, leather booths. The restaurant section of Relish was full of large groups of family and friends celebrating special events. This is obviously a popular spot for celebrations; we joined in no less than three rounds of happy birthday during our meal. It’s the relaxed atmosphere that puts Relish a cut above the rest. Whether you’re popping in for a drink off their extensive cocktail menu after work, or treating yourself to a lavish meal from their expansive and varied menu, their staff are keen to make your evening as carefree and enjoyable as possible. Despite the influx of football fanatics we were served quickly and our starters soon arrived. My companion’s half rack of ribs was juicy and succulent, and Relish’s chefs had perfected their seasoning, rather than relying on the sauce for flavour. I chose the cheese and spring onion potato skins which were incredibly flavoursome, and the use of fresh ingredients shone through. Before our main courses arrived a live band started their set, treating the jovial crowd to classics from artists such as Amy Winehouse and Michael Bublé. Live music is a regular feature at Relish, with the amps
58
getting plugged in most Tuesdays and Thursdays. The sound of the music was momentarily interrupted by the sizzling arrival of my halloumi and vegetable fajitas, taken from the Relish Originals menu. The fajitas were beautifully presented, fresh from the pan alongside a selection of Mexican dips and a stack of tortillas. The child in me loved the do-it-yourself aspect of my dish, and I spent much of the main course experimenting with different fajita combinations. My companion continued his flame-grilled meal and chose the BBQ chicken, which was accompanied by a generous portion of chips and salad. The chicken breast was tender and coated in a sweet BBQ sauce. When choosing our desserts my mind was made up as soon as I spotted the rum caramel accompaniment to the sticky toffee pudding. A self-confessed rum fiend, my status as designated driver meant I had to steer clear of Relish’s cocktail menu, but the sweet, boozy sauce that came with my dessert was a

satisfying substitution. My companion chose the cookie dough sundae, which came with huge chunks of cookie hidden within its layers of cream and ice cream. Upon my glowing recommendation my companion drizzled some rum caramel on top of his sundae, combining the best of both desserts. As we finished our desserts, the football fans kicked off the dancing in front of the band and another birthday cake arrived, this time for an 18-year-old enjoying his first pint in Relish at a meal with his family. It all seems to be part of a normal night at Relish, where everyone receives a warm welcome, great food and flowing drinks whatever the occasion.

It’s all aboard for a stylishly piratical night out at 31 Market Place, writes Phoebe Seymour.
It’s a rum do!
W
ith barrel bar tables, colourful sugar skulls and dripping candles in rum bottles, you’d be forgiven for thinking you had entered a very stylish pirate ship. 31 Market Place only opened in September 2015, but has already become one of Bawtry’s most bustling bars, with many ladies and gents taking advantage of the upstairs and downstairs bars at the weekend. With a particularly long bar list of rums and gins to impress even the most knowledgeable connoisseurs, it’s not surprising their inventive cocktails go down well, but these aren’t the only things the bistro specialises in. Sweet and savoury crepes are at the heart of owner and chef Oliver Clark’s food menu, with a strong focus on good quality and interestingly flavoured meats and cheeses. My partner and I sat at one of the bistro’s non-barrel tables and started by sharing a delicious dish of homemade hummus and soft pieces of bread. Slightly oily with a zingy finish, the bread soon disappeared, but Oliver and the team are always happy to do top-ups. This was washed down with two satisfying rum-based cocktails. Mine was a Rum Swizzle – a shot of dark Kraken rum, a shot of cherryflavoured Old J rum and topped up with grenadine and soda, it was reminiscent of oldfashioned sweets. My partner on the other hand, had a Back, Kraken Sack. Its tropical flavours made for a more summery rum-based drink. For mains, I had the Swiss gallette, a savoury pancake made from buckwheat and
50
filled with cobnut salami, mozzarella and sun blush tomatoes, presenting a beautiful balance of flavours. My partner opted for a meat platter for one, consisting of a delightful selection of British charcuteries too long to list including seaweed-and-cider salami, smoked lamb, rosemary and garlic beef and many more. I tried a slice of wild boar salami, which my partner and I agreed was the most interesting and full-flavoured of the meats. This was accompanied by olives, sun blush tomatoes, balsamic onions and bread. Finally, I ordered a luxury mocha crepe filled with a homemade dark chocolate sauce made to Oliver’s mother’s special recipe and topped with a scoop of Yorvale cappuccino ice cream and Chantilly whipped cream. My partner had a banana luxury crepe filled with fresh slices of banana and a homemade caramel sauce, topped with Yorvale coconut ice cream and Chantilly whipped cream – a sweet end to a very enjoyable meal. If there is one thing I took away from my dining experience at 31Market Place, it is that it is a break from the norm, from its wonderfully original menu and cocktails, down to its weirdly sophisticated surroundings. Whilst the weekend is a great time to party on and sample some of their delightful spirits, weekdays are a great time to relax and indulge in some fantastic food.

From new businesses to parties and special deals, we round up the best that Bawtry has to offer. Alex aims to inspire young entrepreneurs through Chamber Doncaster-based entrepreneurial business owner, Alex Dowie, has become the youngest patron ever of a British Chamber of Commerce. Alex (BA Hons in multimedia, 2014) is the owner and director at Keyhole Visuals based in Bawtry and has joined forces with the Doncaster Chamber of Commerce and Enterprise. He will work in partnership with them, getting involved in the local economy and promoting the value of young people working in the borough, either in employment or as business owners. Alex said: “This is a great opportunity for me to inspire other young business people and show them that hard work and determination does pay off. My university
experience equipped me with not only the practical industry skills, but also business knowledge, and allowed me to capitalise on a market niche within the Sheffield City Region.” Established in late 2014, the business has already started to encourage other young people in the industry to gain practical experience by employing an apprentice and Alex hopes to extend the team by giving
other young people similar opportunities. He added: “Working with the Chamber, I hope to encourage other young business people to invest in Doncaster and show that age is not a prohibitive factor when it comes to being successful in business.” Earlier this year the business secured its latest significant contract with Yorkshire’s number one tourist attraction, Flamingo Land Resort, and is also working with Yorkshire Ambulance Service as another of its newest clients. As part of its patronage with Doncaster Chamber, the business will work to encourage other young people to seek business and career opportunities with the Sheffield City Region and Doncaster borough. An eye for quality Glamour, comfort and top-quality care combine to make choosing eyewear at Bawtry Eye Academy a pleasure.
S
urrounded by plush leather chairs, dark wood furniture and glamorous full length mirrors you almost forget you are arriving for an eye test when you step into Bawtry Eye Academy’s new ground floor premises at Dower House Square. The boutique optician has expanded into a more comfortable, accessible space in the heart of Bawtry, with more room to stock their high quality eyewear. For owner Sarah White, who has been qualified for more than 25 years and has been a dispensing and contact lens optician for 20 of those, the new premises allows her to offer an even more personalised service to her customers. At Bawtry Eye Academy eye tests take half an hour, twice as long as a high street optician, allowing optometrist Sanjiv Sethi to gain as much information as he can about the customer’s eyesight. That way the customer receives a tailored service and the best glasses or contact lenses for them. Sanjiv has 30 years of experience and is incredibly knowledgeable about eye health, specialising in dry eye conditions, children’s eyesight and visual dyslexia testing. At the new Dower House Square premises everyone is made to feel at home; customers are offered a coffee, and are

encouraged to browse the extensive collection at their own pace, taking as long as they need to find the perfect glasses for them. As well as many boutique and limited edition designer frames, Bawtry Eye Academy also offers more affordable ranges so they can cater for all budgets. The no-pressure environment makes choosing new glasses a pleasure, not a chore. A glasses wearer herself, Sarah has addressed the problems she usually comes across when buying a new pair of specs for her, her children or her family. To help customers choose the perfect style frames for them, the Bawtry Eye Academy uses an app that shows the difference between lenses so customers can visualise how the lenses they choose will look in their chosen frames. They also take pictures of their customers in each different pair of glasses which allows them to see their new look with their glasses on, so customers aren’t solely relying on the opinions of others when it comes to deciding what suits them best. With holiday season in full flow, Bawtry Eye Academy is stocking some of the world’s best sunglasses brands including Ray-Ban and Oakley, a brand which is new to the new store. Luxury brands available include German-
engineered Starck glasses, timeless glamour from Tiffany & Co and frames by Lindberg, the same brand worn by the Queen. Bawtry Eye Academy also fit contact lenses from a number of manufacturers including Johnson & Johnson, Alcon (Cibavision), Sauflon, Coopervision and Bausch & Lomb. They offer customers an Academy Plan which allows them to benefit from a regular supply of contact lenses and includes all visits to help maintain the continuing health and comfort of their eyes. With more space to display their beautiful frames, comfortable furniture to relax into during your shopping and a warm welcome for all, Dower House Square has already become a homely haven for glasses and contact lens wearers in Bawtry. Thai massage (yoga principles) could provide a gentle pathway to a healthier future. Liz at Elizabeth Ann Therapies considers the benefits.
M
ore and more people are returning from Thailand with lasting impressions of a massage that is more like yoga. This massage is performed through your clothes and leaves you in a state of sublime relaxation. If you’ve never tried Thai massage before, give it a go as I can’t recommend it enough; it’s absolutely unique. Slowly stretch yourself to health. Improve your flexibility, breathing and digestion. Aid the blood flow to the internal organs, improving health. Most muscular-skeletal pain and lack of mobility of the joints is the result of muscles shortening due to repetitive strain. This massage manipulates and stretches the muscles a little more than would be possible unaided. Joint mobility is restored and tension disappears. This massage helps balance the body, improving posture, while enhancing the practice of yoga and pilates. It relieves pain due to arthritis, boosting circulation, increasing resistance to injuries and easing any emotional and nervous tension. Wonderful!
Q&A: Send your wellbeing questions to Liz @ Elizabethann61@live.co.uk One will be chosen and published monthly. Clinic @ The Vanilla Rooms Bawtry Dear Liz, I am 60 years old and suffer very poor flexibility, I’ve joined a yoga class and it has improved a little. However I am very inflexible compared to the other people in the class. What therapy would you recommend to help increase my flexibility so I can enjoy my yoga more. Denise, Doncaster Liz replies: Thai yoga massage incorporates yoga moves which are assisted, so you can achieve a deeper stretch than you are able to manage on your own. So much of feeling old comes from what is often regarded as the inevitable stiffening of the joints with advancing years. Regular Thai massage quickly proves this is not so, as it restores long lost mobility to the joints. All of the above are available with me @ The Vanilla Rooms Bawtry. Love your skin The unique range of treatments at Elements Medispa can help smooth away flaws like lines and acne.
T
here’s nothing quite like having glowing smooth skin. But for those of us who struggle with melasma, acne, fine lines, rough texture and large pores, finding a routine that works to combat these issues can be tough. Thankfully, at Elements MediaSpa in Doncaster, there is a range of treatments that can reveal renewed and replenished skin in no time. Ossential® Ultra Hydration Treatment works to rejuvenate moisturedepleted skin. This treatment begins with a gentle hydrating cleansing and micro-exfoliation to remove surface debris. The skin is prepped for a triple action resurfacing process to enhance brightness and clarity, as well as to address skin texture, fine lines and wrinkles. ZO® Aloe Hydra gel, with cucumber and chamomile is applied to cool, calm and soothe the skin, followed by a pressure point
massage to minimise facial stress and maximise relaxation. The treatment finishes with DNA repairing enzymes, hydrators and sun protection enhanced with natural melanin to reveal vibrantly clear, firm, strengthened and protected skin. For excessive oil production, the Ossential® Acne and Oil Control Treatment helps to minimise large pores and inflammation. The treatment begins with cleansing to gently remove impurities, followed by a micro-scrub to remove debris from the skin’s surface. A combination of AHAs (alpha hydroxy acids) and salicylic acid are used to minimise excess oil production and tighten pores. Healing is encouraged and inflammation minimised with the exclusive ZO® Bio-Sulfur Masque for calm, clear and healthier, oil-free skin. Those looking to restore skin clarity, reduce pigment spots and discoloration should try the Ossential® Skin
Brightening Treatment. This creates a radiant, more even skin tone and texture with citric, salicylic and lactic acids, which are used to increase skin brightness and clarity, and minimise pore size. A moisture-rich cleansing and mild exfoliation is followed by a vitamin-fortified calming massage. To further brighten the skin, the Ossential® Skin Brightening Sheet Masque is applied to minimise the production of excess skin pigment and supply ample hydration to the tissue. The treatment concludes with powerful ZO® antioxidants, coenzymes and sun protection to inhibit melanin production and stimulate the growth of healthy cells. Swinging city John Murphy follows in the footsteps of presidents, movie stars and pop idols to sample the delights of golf Las Vegas-style.
A “
im at the pyramid,” said Dave, my golfing partner in his slow Texas drawl. Were we driving off on an Egyptian course in the sand? Well, we were in the sand but it was more of the Nevada desert sort than the Sahara and the pyramid in question was the Luxor hotel on the Las Vegas Strip. That sums up Vegas – inspiring, mightily impressive, but one step away from reality. And it’s that escape from reality that makes the city such a popular destination with tourists from all over the world, with more than 40 million visitors jetting to the desert destination last year. Vegas boasts myriad attractions, from 24hour gambling to exotic hotels, fine restaurants and sensational shows but one attraction that should not be overlooked is golf. Amazingly there are 52 top quality courses within half an hour’s drive of the airport. Bali Hai club maintains Vegas’ fracture with reality. It is constructed on the famous Vegas Strip with views over an array of notable landmarks such as the Luxor and MGM hotels. And yet despite its hard-tobelieve location it has a theme – much like the majority of Las Vegas attractions. This course’s theme is a South Pacific island
John tees off in Vegas
78
paradise, which is created by deep blue ponds, brilliant white sand bunkers, lush foliage and imposing palm trees. The theme is maintained by the colonial style luxurious club house with its soft leather seating and palm leaved roofing. The club house provides the backdrop to the 16th, a par 3 of 140 yards playing to an island green, as it does to a very difficult finishing par 4 of 486 yards. Get the ball on the fairway then master a long rescue club flighting the ball first over a pond and then drawing it over a beach-sized bunker. With a little luck the ball might just carry to the top of the bunker and then hop onto the green. Two putts mean one of the most satisfying pars of the trip, especially if a 19th hole gallery is gathered on the veranda. A round at Bali Hai means you’re in good company: Clinton, Obama, Samuel L Jackson, Adam Sandler and U2 are among a long list of celebrities who have walked the verdant fairways of Las Vegas’ only course on The Strip. Another big name to leave a big impression on a Las Vegas club is Tiger Woods who scorched round Rio Secco in a course record 64. He had been a regular at Rio Secco because his former coach, Butch Harmon, runs a golf school at the club. He was obviously in a rich vein of form as a week later he won the 2000 US Open at Pebble Beach by 15 shots. This is golf in the real Wild West. Fairways are hewn out of the desert with huge boulders and rocks running alongside. It’s the rough, but not as we know it. Fortunately my transatlantic golfing pals informed me that rather than smashing a club and a body we should drop out onto the fairway with a one shot penalty. Can we try that in the Saturday medal please? ¯

Unreal: the Bali Hai club is right on the Vegas Strip
ES Travel
RIGHT: Bali Hai viewed from above BELOW: The Las Vegas Strip at night
The course is great fun with a number of very difficult par 3s which involve clipping the ball over ravines onto shallow, cliff-hugging greens, framed by prickly cacti and shrubs. A feature of the course is the number of holes that funnel into small greens below sheer cliffs of rock and boulders. “This is where the Indians would round the cowboys up,” drawled Dave. “There was no escape when they were down there and the Indians would just pick them off.” All the courses in the area are worth playing. They all have unusual features but have one in common: they are beautifully maintained, which is an incredible achievement given the lack of rain (1.81 inches in 2014). Our final course was Bear’s Best, the theme of which is a collection of the best holes designed by Jack Nicklaus. The course again is great fun and shouts Vegas with its collection of different holes just as The Strip itself features myriad themes such as Egyptian, French or Italian. When the sun goes down and The Strip lights up it’s time to savour the attractions of
another city that never sleeps. Again, suspend reality as you see a laser image of Gordon Ramsay and his new restaurant flashed onto a mock Arc De Triomphe. There’s a pirate ship on one side of the vast boulevard, a gondola on another and further down The Strip there’s a huge hot air balloon. Many of the older, landmark hotels such as The Venetian, New York New York and Caesar’s Palace are theme based but more recently the trend has been to develop more luxury brands such as The Bellagio, Delano and Aria. Casinos are still a major part of these establishments but they now offer more, such as the wonderful dancing fountains outside The Bellagio and impressive shopping complexes. Top class dining is also a feature of Vegas with celebrity chefs having venues across the city. Try these for an eclectic selection: Rivea at Delano,Yardbird at The Venetian, Guy Fieri’s Las Vegas Kitchen at The Linq and the Triple George Grill at Downtown Grand – famous for its delicious steaks. Nightlife doesn’t end with a meal: enjoy
cocktails in exotic bars such as The Skyfall Lounge at Delano or a show with such stars as Rod Stewart, Elton John and Celine Dion regularly performing. We were lucky enough to see America’s Got Talent winner Mat Franco and his array of impressive card tricks. The show came after a trip on Vegas’ own ferris wheel – The High Roller at The Linq. Bigger than the London Eye, it gave us great views of the dazzling city made even more enjoyable by drinks served at a bar in one of the capsules. If you’re not golfing in Las Vegas there’s plenty to do in the day. A helicopter ride over the Grand Canyon is a must with its spectacular views over the Nevada desert and The Hoover Dam. Take a trip downtown to the Freemont Street area: a more earthy but vibrant atmosphere than The Strip and home to one of the best museums I’ve visited: The Mob Museum. Sit in an electric chair, be part of a prohibition trial and find out about Sinatra’s apparent connection to JFK’s assassination. And of course, don’t forget the shopping malls – that’s when reality does kick in.
Factbox John Murphy stayed at the Aria Resort & Casino 3730 Las Vegas Boulevard, Las Vegas Deluxe rooms at ARIA start from $149 per night - www.aria.com/en For more information about Las Vegas please visit www.lasvegas.com/uk
