Copper, nickel and brassware have been on trend for the past couple of years and are set to continue to be so this year. Now, the impressive showroom – with manager Jayne Bluck at the helm – has gone from strength to strength. With many completed installations and a number of happy customers, they have quickly built up a reputation as a high-quality, value-for-money and expert bathroom provider. With 33 years’ experience in the industry, Jayne has a keen eye for detail and is the ideal person to go to if you’re in need of any design advice. The many bathrooms on display are filled with various ideas, which is great for those in need of some inspiration. There is an impressive range of products on offer, from tiles, ceilings and lights, to furniture, baths and shower enclosures – some of which are exclusive to the area. They also have a range especially designed to cater for disabled people. Wet rooms and low access shower trays are becoming a more popular solution for those with mobility issues. As well as being able to supply all your bathroom products, Wow Interiors can project manage a development from start to finish, including measuring, designing and installation. Jayne has worked with the same reliable installers for many years, so you can sit back and relax, safe in the knowledge that every aspect has been taken care of. It’s a family affair DONCASTER STORE CELEBRATES UNITED CARPETS & BEDS’ 20TH MILESTONE. he UK’s largest franchised carpet and bed retailer is celebrating its 20th birthday in Doncaster. No longer a teenager, the family-owned Barnby Dun Road branch has started its summer sale to celebrate this important milestone, with customers encouraged to drop in to the store to help them mark the occasion in style. The Horgan family has spent 17 years at the helm of the store in Doncaster, owned by husband and wife duo Joanne and John, the couple’s sons Jonathan and Trafford also make up the contracts and fitting team. Jonathan, contracts manager, said: “We love working as a family and this really transcends to our customer service too; they can
T
immediately see who they’re dealing with and it creates an open and friendly atmosphere. “We ensure that we have floor coverings (and beds) to suit all budgets, so all customers leave the store with a deal that is right for them and are 100 per cent satisfied with the service they have received – something we are very proud of. “It is an industry that never stays still, with the flooring market constantly changing. We’ve noticed an increased appreciation in our interest free credit offering as it gives customers the opportunity to spread the cost of their flooring and beds – it really comes in useful when someone’s doing a whole house renovation.” Jonathan, who oversees the store’s projects,
said: “We are seeing home trends change too, with colour choices going from beiges and browns to the current love of grey. Stripes on stairs have been all the rage for quite a while now but they did take quite a while to take off originally, and we are seeing that zig zags are the new stripes. There are also really exciting plans in the pipelines for the coming weeks and months, so keep your eyes peeled.” United Carpets and Beds, headquartered in Moorhead House, Rotherham, offers a huge range and selection of affordable carpets, wood flooring, laminate and beds across the UK and online. Will Hickman, marketing manager, said: “Turning 20 is a huge deal for the whole United Carpets family and an occasion we couldn’t go without celebrating. While a lot has changed over 20 years, our customer value proposition has been present throughout and indeed has only increased in importance. The Horgan family has been with us for 17 of the 20 years and cheers to many more years to come!” For more information, visit www.unitedcarpetsandbeds.com. PERFECT PEPPERCORN SAUCE AND LASHINGS OF CHEESE ADD UP TO A SATISFYING EXPERIENCE AT THE HARVEY ARMS, WRITES MOLLY MCGREEVY. rriving at The Harvey Arms as the ducks soak up the last of the summer solstice sun next to Finningley’s pond, the patrons of the village’s pub mirror their quacking counterparts basking in the evening light in The Harvey Arms’ stunning beer garden. Refurbishing the pub’s outside areas has been a labour of love for Sandra Kennedy and her partner Warren, who have spent two years transforming the area to the side of the pub from an overgrown space used for keeping chickens to a lush lawn, scattered with colourful flowers. The latest addition is an outside bar, built in a converted barn to the back of the pub, which will be used during events, weddings and parties. Inside the pub is traditional and cosy, favoured among locals and destination diners alike, its menu features pub classics and an extensive specials board. To start, I opted for the breaded mozzarella fritta (£4.95), whilst my friend chose the tortilla chips (£4.95). My frittas arrived oozing with thick, melted cheese, on a bed of spicy salsa. Across the table, my friend was also enjoying melted cheese, which was coating crisp tortilla chips. Simple, but delicious, and plenty to share
A
between two, much to my delight. After a tough choice between the peppered rib-eye steak from the specials board and the rump dteak, my friend opted for the 8oz rump dteak (£10.95), taking full advantage of her diet’s ‘cheat day’ and adding scampi too. Inspired, I also decide to ditch the diet for the evening, and pick the three-cheese macaroni (£8.95), with cheesy garlic bread (£2.75) for good measure. The steak was cooked to perfection, but it was the peppercorn sauce that stole the show for my friend: “it’s the best I’ve ever tasted” she exclaimed, doting on the thick, flavoursome condiment. Across the table I was making similar claims about my macaroni’s sauce, the trio of cheeses blending perfectly. With the sun still beating down, and in need of a break from the cheese feast my meal had unwittingly become, dessert needed to be light. The fresh fruit and custard tart (£4.25) was the obvious option and its thin layer of custard, topped with the juicy raspberries, strawberries and blueberries, was the perfect sweet for a midsummer meal. Choosing indulgence my friend tucked in to a Baileys and toffee cheesecake (£5.25), which came with a shot of the Irish cream liquor.
Rich and creamy, the beautifully presented pudding proved too tempting, and a stolen mouthful was a delicious full stop to my meal. As the pub filled up for the quiz, Sandra took to her bar stool to compere, welcoming villagers as they arrived. Almost eight years after taking on The Harvey Arms, she has transformed Finningley’s pub into a friendly hub for food, drinks and fun with family and friends alike. With more renovations and projects planned for the future, The Harvey Arms looks set to become quite the destination for diners in the Doncaster region. The Ship shapes up GOOD FOOD AND A GREAT ATMOSPHERE ADD UP TO AN ENJOYABLE DINING EXPERIENCE FOR HANNAH SANDERS. hen it comes to eating out, sometimes nothing beats a traditional English country pub, and The Ship @ Bawtry ticks all the boxes when it comes to relaxing dining. The Ship is no stranger to success, as the entrance is decorated with awards. They were the first winners of the Best Pub award at the inaugural Eastside Restaurant Awards in 2013, and are proud owners of numerous accolades from CAMRA. The Ship has been run by the Wallis family for over a decade. It was under the charge of Mandy and Dave Wallis until November 2015, but has been taken over by their son Chris, who previously ran the Blacksmiths Arms at Everton. When my partner and I arrived, the pub was already full of families and groups of friends creating a homely and social vibe. Settling into our corner table, we relaxed with a large glass of The Old Museum Merlot (£4.60) for myself while, my companion ordered a large coke (£2.50). There’s a fantastic choice on the menu and specials boards, as well as proper puddings, including vegan choices, to end the meal on.
W
I started with the tempura king prawns accompanied with a home-made sweet chilli dip (£5.95), whilst my dining partner opted for the belly pork (£4.95). The prawns were some of the best I’ve ever had with the batter being light, fluffy and surprisingly non-greasy, while the melted cheddar mixed with the sweet BBQ sauce and tender pork was a perfect combination to start off our evening. I couldn’t resist choosing the minted lamb pie of the day (£9.95) for mains. The meat was tender, covered in a rich gravy and topped with a shortcrust pastry lid. I opted to have it with fresh seasonal vegetables (50p) along with home-cut chips. My partner went for the beer battered Grimsby haddock (£12.95), an extremely generous portion of fish, which was coated in a light batter. This was a blissful aftertaste of childhood days at the seaside, served with mushy peas and deliciously golden chips. For dessert, due to my dietary needs, I went for the vegan menu and I was pleasantly surprised by the variety available. After much deliberation I chose the peanut butter and jelly cheesecake (£4.95). It was made with an oat and date base, which complemented the
peanut butter along with the sweetness of the black cherry ice cream. My partner opted for the classic crème brulee served with a shortcrust biscuit (£3.95), which was wonderfully light, sweet and topped with a perfectly caramelized layer of melted sugar. So, if you’re searching for a good old fashioned pub, with homemade food, an extensive drink selection, and a friendly atmosphere, a visit to The Ship will not disappoint. Beautifully presented and gorgeous flavours - we'll be back again and would definately recommend Zara's Restaurant to anyone wanting to taste the finest Indian food in the area!" – Mr Edwards, Bawtry
"Great food, Great Service, Great atmosphere. All I can say is Great!"
"Anyone wanting a beautiful Indian meal - you must try eating here. I've now tried most dishes on the menu, each and every one as been top notch. I especially love their lamb dishes. Relexed restaurant environment and friendly staff all help to make for a great night out every time."
"A big thankyou to all the staff at Zara's. I have special dietry requirements and have always had a lot of trouble when it comes to ordering from a restaurant menu - not at Zara's. I was able (for the first time in years) to choose anything, all food is hand prepared from scratch, with fresh ingredients and cooked to my individual dietry requirements. It made the whole experience very relaxing and uncomplictaed and to top it all off - the mean was perfect. Many, many thanks."

CAST YOUR VOTE ive years ago we decided to test the water and see if there was an appetite in the Eastside region for a restaurant awards night. Well, we know the answer to that one. Our first event was a huge success and the Eastside Restaurant Awards have gone from strength to strength, getting bigger and better every year. Now the race is on to find the winners in the Eastside Restaurant Awards for 2017, and with an exciting new venue booked for this year’s event it looks like being the biggest and best yet. On the evening of Monday 9 October, Doncaster Racecourse, home of the St Leger Festival and the venue over the decades for many a classic sporting contest, will host our annual celebration of the region’s culinary superstars. This glamorous black tie event has quickly become established as one of the big nights of the year in the social calendar; it also offers a huge boost to the local restaurant scene, as the winners enjoy their moment of triumph and all the nominated restaurants bask in the glow of positive publicity. Our previous venue was The Crown Hotel in
F
Bawtry, and owner Craig Dowie and the team did a fabulous job in helping to put the Eastside Restaurant Awards on the map. Moving to Doncaster Racecourse, past masters at catering on the largest scales, ensures that we can extend our invitation beyond the local restaurant scene to include the general public. In fact, it’s the perfect opportunity for the Eastside region’s food fanatics and socialites (all you would-be Paris Hiltons!) to see and be seen. The room will be dressed by White Rose Occasions of Doncaster, which has spent the last decade helping people plan their celebrations and transforming venues of all shapes and sizes into spectacular settings for big events. There will also be a charity raffle to add to the total funds raised by the Equinox Ball, which will be staged on 30 September at Doncaster Deaf Trust College on behalf of Firefly Cancer Research. Eastside’s reviewers are out and about now, checking out established and new restaurants, seeking out the very best the region has to offer. All our recent award winners have been exceptional, so expectations are high.
The Eastside Readers’ Choice trophy is highly prized. Whether you select your favourite local cafe, a much-loved Indian or Italian restaurant or any other type of food venue, all votes are equal. Everyone who casts a vote will be entered into a draw, and one lucky winner will receive dinner for two at their favourite restaurant. Voting is free: simply go online to www.rmcmedia.co.uk/events/awards/ eastside to let us know where you have enjoyed eating out most over the last 12 months. All entries must include a home address and contact details, any multiple entries from the same email address will be disqualified.
Get involved All restaurants taking part in the Eastside Restaurant Awards benefit from the publicity as we shine a spotlight on the region’s finest dining establishments, from ultra-modern contemporary bistros to cosy cafes, and everything in between. This year’s event promises to be the biggest yet and here’s a reminder to all restaurant, hotel, café and pub owners who have not yet taken the plunge... there is still time! Hollywood glamour THERE WAS PLENTY OF STAR QUALITY ON DISPLAY AT THE SEPARATIST INN... AND THEN THERE’S THE FOOD. BY PHOEBE SEYMOUR. hat do Marilyn Monroe, Richard Gere and President Franklin Roosevelt all have in common? They are all famous descendants of the Pilgrim Fathers, who sailed from England to America on the Mayflower in 1620 – some of whom, came from local villages such as Scrooby and Austerfield. The Separatist Inn in Torworth celebrates this movement with a Pilgrim Father-themed gastro pub and six luxury rooms named Eastman, Eastwood, Hepburn, Monroe, Gere and Roosevelt. Each room has furniture inspired by, and a huge painting of, the celebrity it is dedicated to so you can fully get into character. It’s a formula that’s paid off for the inn and restaurant, which has been open little over a year, but has already received local and national acclaim including Best Pub at the Eastside Restaurant Awards 2016, an AA Four Star Silver rating for its boutique hotel rooms and a Dinner Award for its modern British dishes. After a sneak peek at the glamourous Monroe room, I sat in a sumptuous armchair in the bar area and ordered a Prosecco Royale (£5.95) in an attempt to channel my inner

Hollywood star, while my partner ordered a summery rum punch (£7.95). We were then seated in a round booth in the light and airy dining area, which was luxurious yet minimal. I started with the salmon (£6.50) served with creamy cauliflower purée, crunchy cauliflower fritter pieces, thin slices of radish, quail eggs and keta caviar and my partner had the soup of the day (£5.50), which was a creamy and tangy tomato and red pepper soup served with a warm bread roll. The presentation of the dishes is just as impressive as the flavours, and my main of butter poached chicken (£13.95), with its three boulders of confit chicken, resembled a foodie’s answer to Stonehenge. This was served with strands of wild garlic, mushrooms and a jug of rich red wine jus on the side. My partner meanwhile, was tucking into the beef fillet (£13.95) – beautiful juicy pieces of steak, confit potatoes, king prawn scampi and Jerusalem artichoke topped with watercress. For dessert, I had carrot cake (£5.95) – two soft and warm squares packed with walnuts and accompanied by tonka bean ice cream and candied walnuts that almost stole
the show. My partner, being the sweet tooth he is, had the chocolate delice (£6.95), which came as a dark chocolate tuille, with a runny chocolate centre, topped with a white chocolate yoghurt disk and served with a sour cherry sorbet. It’s not for the faint-hearted, but somehow he managed to devour the whole thing. Full and satisfied after a delicious dinner, my only regret was that I wasn’t staying over in the high-ceilinged and glamourous Monroe room upstairs. There’s always next time. FEATURE
Summer beauty It’s easy to neglect our skin in the summer. With the warmer, more humid weather it means skin isn’t as dry and itchy as it is in winter. However with the sun shining it’s important to be diligent with your skin care regime.
GET SET FOR SUMMER LOOK YOUR BEST THIS SUMMER WITH THESE HEALTH AND BEAUTY TIPS FROM HANNAH SANDERS. ummer has finally arrived, but just because the sun is shining doesn’t mean you should become lax on looking after your body and mind. It’s now more important than ever to focus on keeping your body happy, so we’ve put together some top summer lifestyle tips.
S
AVOID SUNBEDS If you want some summer skin colour, avoid the tanning beds and choose a safer option such as selftanning towels or gradual lotions. However always check the ingredient labels to ensure the base formula is non-toxic.
Wear safe, non-toxic suncream (even on cloudy days)
Use a lotion of at least SPF 30 in order to protect your skin from harmful UV rays. If you have sensitive skin, a mineral-based sunscreen is best. If possible avoid sitting in direct sunlight between 10am to 4pm to minimise UV radiation, and apply suncream every two to three hours - more if you are in the water.
Exfoliate
Dead cells sit on the surface of your skin making it look dull, by exfoliating you remove the dead cells, making your skin more radiant and healthier. When possible, choose a gentle natural exfoliator so it is not harsh on your skin. Protect your glossy locks
Hair suffers damage during the summer with the constant heat, sun damage and chlorine. If you’re going away try an anti-chlorine shampoo and conditioner and minimise the use of hairdryers and straighteners. Sleep
MOISTURISE YOUR SKIN It’s tempting to ease up on moisturising in summer as skin doesn’t feel as dry. Good moisturisers work over time to help promote healthy skin. Try one containing aloe vera which keeps skin hydrated, and if you do get sunburnt will soothe the discomfort.
Lack of sleep can lead to increased stress hormones, which may slow down the production of collagen in the skin causing the skin to lose elasticity and look tired and worn. Try and get a good solid seven to eight hours per night to keep your face looking fresh.
FEATURE
Health & Fitness Now that summer is in full swing, with barbeques, cocktails and garden parties it’s easy to forget you exercise regime. However there are simple things you can do to keep healthy throughout the warmer months.
Pack your breakfast and lunch
This is a great habit to get into no matter what time of year. When you don’t do this, it can lead to you eating junk food. Instead take some time to plan out your weekday work meals which will help give your body the right nutrients.
Drink plenty of water
During the hot summer months, heat and sweat can leave your body dehydrated. A lack of water is harmful to your body and can also make you crave food. If possible drink eight to nine glasses of water per day, and if you need some flavour add in some low calorie flavouring or even fruit. Workout in the morning
Doing your workouts in summer are tricky, especially as you don’t want to be stuck in the gym on warm evenings. Set your alarm earlier so you can work out before you start your day. This will kickstart your metabolism and get those happy endorphins flowing.
Practice random acts of fitness
Sneak in little bits of exercise with summer-friendly activiti es. For example gardening burns around 128 calories and not only makes you feel great but you’ll have a beautiful garden to show for it. You could also go for a nice walk with the dog, bike around your neighbourhood or even hula-hoop.
TAKE UP YOGA Yoga is great for the summer. It can be done no matter what age and increases your strength, flexibility along with making you happier and more focused. You can do the stretches from the comfort of your own home and spend as little or as long on each exercise as you please. Spas
Summer sun can affect your skin dramatically. The UV rays dry out your skin and exposes fine lines, so going to a spa is the perfect way to re-hydrate your skin. Day or weekend spas have become a popular form of healthy relaxation over the years. They provide stress reduction and relief, help soothe joints and muscles and make you feel better about yourself. There are lots of different treatments available including massages, mud baths and facials. Most spas also have saunas along with fire and ice rooms leaving you refreshed and ready for summer events. Cool down with essential oils
Dabbing a few drops of peppermint or eucalyptus oil on the back of your neck and temples just before your workout provides a cooling effects, and opens up nasal passages so you can breathe a little easier.
Eat more colours
Everything you eat plays an important role in the way your body functions., so try to incorporate more colours in terms of fresh fruit and vegetables into your diet.
ABOVE ALL, BE HAPPY! Enjoy all the beauty summer has to offer and try and keep stress levels at a minimum. Celebrate your healthy habits instead of looking at them as an obligation and always take one day at a time.

Natural enhancement EASTSIDE COMPETITION WINNER SARAH BURGON TOOK FULL ADVANTAGE OF HER PRIZE AT ELEMENTS MEDISPA. HERE’S WHAT SHE THOUGHT. hen it comes to aesthetic treatments, it should be about enhancing what you have, not creating something that was never there. This is something clinical director and nurse prescriber Sandy Green at Elements MediSpa in Doncaster firmly believes in and over the last 13 years, she has seen first-hand how her clients can achieve a noticeable, but natural look. Elements MediSpa recently launched a competition in association with Eastside to allow one of our readers to try their treatments for themselves. The lucky winner was Sarah Burgon, who decided to put anti-wrinkle injections and dermal lip fillers to the test. Sarah is getting married later this year and was excited about the prospect of having a treatment in time for her hen do the following week. After a thorough face-to-face consultation to check her medical history and assess her needs, Sandy suggested areas that would benefit from anti-wrinkle injections. Sarah agreed to have the injections in her forehead and nose to relax the muscles and reduce the appearance of frown lines. This was followed by Restylane dermal filler to enhance her lips, with particular focus on giving her a fuller bottom lip, and to correct peri-oral lines. Sarah was then invited to sit back, relax, listen to the soothing spa music and let Sandy work her magic. After the treatments, Sarah was told to drink lots of water, especially in the first week, to see more effective results. She was also offered a follow-up appointment three weeks later, to make sure she was happy with the
W
results and to check if any top-ups were required. The results of the anti-wrinkle injections last up to three months, whilst the lip fillers last up to six months. Sarah said: “I’ve had anti-wrinkle injections before, but my experience at Elements was outstanding. The service was fantastic and it was absolutely painless. Sandy knows exactly what she is doing and was good at answering all my questions and recommending treatments. The aftercare was also great. “I’m really pleased with the results. What I love most, is how natural the results are. I still look like myself. I would definitely go back. Next time I have a treatment, Elements will be my first choice!” To view a video of Sarah’s experience at Elements Medispa, visit the Eastside Facebook page at @EastsideMagazine. More glowing reviews can be found on the Elements Medispa Facebook page at @ElementsMediSpa. To book a free, no obligation consultation, contact Elements on 01302 34 34 32. Treat your skin TURN BACK THE YEARS WITH ELEMENTS MEDISPA. s the years pass, the skin is stretched, volume is lost and tell-tale signs of ageing begin to show on our faces in the form of fine lines and wrinkles. This is because, as we age, our faces lose subcutaneous fat and the muscles are then working closer to the skin surface, so areas such as smile lines and crow’s feet become more apparent. Other factors which affect the skin and its volume are sun exposure, genetics and lifestyle. Dermal fillers help to diminish these tell-tale signs of ageing. These can be used in the areas pictured to correct any imperfections, using advanced filler techniques performed by experienced injectors.

Easy as 1, 2, 3 DETERMINED TO LOSE WEIGHT, TERRI-ANN NUNNS DEVISED HER OWN DIET PLAN – AND NOW HAS 72,000 PEOPLE ASKING FOR HER ADVICE. fter struggling with her weight for many years, Terri-Ann Nunns took the unusual step and created her own diet plan. Four years down the line she has become something of a diet guru, and her 123 Diet Plan is highly sought after. Suffering the loss of her newborn daughter in 2005 and having two pregnancies in quick succession caused Terri-Ann to find solace in food. As a result of this her weight increased, her marriage broke down, she lost her job and suffered depression. After gradually re-building her life and meeting her now husband Michael Nunns, Terri-Ann decided it was time to focus on her weight. “Michael is five years younger than me and when we went out on New Year’s Eve, I saw the photographs and felt really down. So in January 2011, I decided enough was enough and I was determined to lose the weight.” After conventional diets failed, Terri-Ann took the unusual step of making up her own diet. “I combined bits of diet I had tried before, but added in more carbs. I just played around with food for a few months and I lost threeand-a-half stone. “I put my weight loss journey pictures online, lots of people were curious and it really took off from there.” Terri-Ann then put pen to paper and

created a book full of all her diet tips. As it got busier, she took the risk of leaving her PA job to focus on the diet plan full time – and with now 72,000 users it is clear this risk has paid off. “The reason the plan is so successful is because we understand that everyone has different goals and objectives. I created the plan to suit real people.” The plan is broken into three simple steps, starting at the ten-day boost through to the maintenance stage. It is simply a high protein diet with limited carbs, so you can eat as much fish, meat and poultry, vegetables fruit, quinoa and sweet potatoes, but steer clear of white potatoes, white and brown rice, white bread and pasta. Terri-Ann has also recently re-vamped her popular recipe book, which can be bought online. She’s teamed up with local chef Michael Price to create some wonderful exclusive healthy recipes. Norwegian good
MAIN PICTURE: Pulpit Rock, a steep cliff which rises 604 metres above the Lysefjorden BELOW: The oil terminal
CHRIS WILSON ENJOYS A BRACING BREAK IN STAVANGER, CAPITAL OF NORWAY’S OIL BOOM. ention that you have just been to Norway, and the odds are you will be asked about the cost of a round of drinks. Never mind the Vikings, mountain trolls or mystical beasts reputed to lurk in the depths of the fjords, it’s the legend of the pricey pint that seems to linger in the British consciousness. So, to answer your question, around £8 for a ‘large beer’ that I reckon was just short of a pint, and the same for a glass of wine. Pricey enough to deter the stag and hen crowd, but not quite enough to demand total abstinence. Just go careful… and don’t get involved in any big rounds. We were staying in Stavanger, a large, bustling port just over an hour’s flight from
M
Newcastle Airport on BMI Regional. The harbour is the heart of the town with navy boats and cruise ships jostling for position while the water’s edge is busy with bars (where those prices certainly don’t seem to act as a deterrent) and fancy seafood restaurants. Head for the narrow, winding streets away from the waterfront and you’ll find many more dining and drinking opportunities, along with plenty of designer shops. There is also a large oil terminal further along the bay, a solid symbol of the reasons for those signs of prosperity. On 23 December, 1969 Norway struck an offshore oil field rich enough to guarantee the nation’s wealth for generations to come.

From that day onwards, Stavanger was slowly transformed from a dying community where sardine canning was the main form of employment, to the boom town of today. With so much to see and all of it within close proximity, Stavanger is an ideal weekend break location. A city stroll to get your bearings is a sensible first step, and this will inevitably lead you to Old Stavanger, a truly lovely area of steep cobbled streets, perfect wooden houses gleaming with white and pastel shades, immaculate gardens and hanging baskets. This is also where you will find the sardine canning museum. OK, so reading that sentence didn’t make your pulse quicken, but trust me, this place is a gem. Take a guided tour courtesy of museum manager Piers Crocker, an Englishman who married a local girl and never left, and lose yourself for an hour in his fishy tale of the local industry that reflects the town’s fluctuating pre-oil fortunes… and don’t forget to pick up a tin of chocolate sardines from the gift shop on your way out. There are other ways to see the sights. A Segway tour of street art, which seems to be embraced locally rather than dismissed as cultural vandalism, saw me tackling an unlikely form of transport. Thankfully our guide Rami stashed his machines in an
TRAVEL
underground car park, which was deserted and therefore the perfect place to find your balance before taking to the streets. Those gentle practice runs did not quite prepare us for the more demanding task of going uphill on wet, leafstrewn cobbles, but even the most ungainly member of our group (i.e. me) quickly got the hang of it and lived to tell the tale. All this activity, and the bracing sea air, will work up a healthy appetite. For seafood lovers Fisketorget, which has a dominant position at the top of the harbour, is a combined restaurant and fish market where I ate tremendous creamy fish soup with crunchy croutons and pan-fried hake with baked root vegetables, spinach, celeriac purée and shellfish sauce. Over the course of our weekend we also enjoyed local venison at Hall Toll, another harbour-side restaurant in the old customs building, and char-grilled squid and steak at Renaa Maltbaren, the informal, contemporary sister bistro of a rather more sedate Michelin-
starred venue next door. After dark the bars are packed, and with canopies, heaters and blankets as standard, sitting outdoors with a cold beer is a yearlong pastime. Dress accordingly, of course, this is northern Europe so fleeces, hats, gloves and waterproofs are always travel essentials. We stayed at the Victoria Hotel, in the heart of the town on the harbour edge and pleasingly traditional. The rooms were modern and pristine, but the best thing about the hotel was the staggeringly good buffet breakfasts. Forget your wormy bacon and fried eggs turning to bullets under heat lamps, we were offered vegetable juice shots and fruit smoothies, inventive salads of spinach, watermelon and pinenuts, smoked salmon, beetroot, pickled cucumbers and the local black bread. It was healthy, invigorating and a positively lifeenhancing way to start the day. Away from the busy town, fjords and mountains dominate the landscape and even on a short stay it’s essential to get a taste of
the true Norwegian wilderness. A 30-minute coach trip to the outskirts of the neighbouring town of Sandnes took us to the starting point for an exhilarating afternoon hike that took us to the top of the Dalsnuten mountain. The last section was suitably strenuous but the rewards came with breath-taking views of the Jaeren region, with distant mountain ranges, lakes and fjords seemingly stretching to infinity, and looking back towards the sea, an equally dazzling view of Stavanger glistening in the late afternoon sun. We’d already packed for all weathers, of course, and this particular afternoon stroll definitely required hiking boots. Our final morning left one thing to be ticked off our ‘must do’ list and that was the fjord cruise from Stavanger to Pulpit Rock, a steep cliff which rises 604 metres above the Lysefjorden. The view from the top of the rock is the shot you’ll see in all the guide books, and it’s one of Norway’s most popular tourist destinations for those with the energy to tackle a full day’s walk with a strenuous climb at the end. I must admit, floating in the bay looking up at the sheer rock face, I suddenly wished I was one of those hikers on top of the rock looking down. Maybe next time.
Factbox: One-way flights from Newcastle to Stavanger start from £80. WHEN MICHELE’S PARTNER CHRIS POPPED THE QUESTION, THERE WAS ONLY ONE WEDDING VENUE THAT SPRUNG TO MIND – THE CROWN HOTEL IN BAWTRY.
‘Dream come true’ y husband, Chris has worked with the team at The Crown Hotel for many years, and, having been guests on several occasions, it already held a special place in our hearts. When we became
M

engaged to be married, it was the obvious venue for our wedding reception. We didn’t hesitate to call and they had availability for the date we wanted, 20 May, which was also our ten-year anniversary – it was obviously meant to be. From the first meeting with our wedding coordinator, Tori, nothing was too much trouble. From the minute we arrived, we were made to feel welcome; from the prosecco, bottles of Peroni, duck spring rolls and mini fish and chips canapes on arrival, to the entrance to the reception, the atmosphere and the setting… the list goes on. We chose a fresh, clean and traditional look for our wedding theme and no detail was too small or overlooked. White Rose Occasions
dressed the rooms so elegantly, with starlit backdrops and ceiling drapes, jewelled tree centre pieces, white table cloths and lovely pink chair sashes, and, as our son was christened immediately after our ceremony, they made a special effort to incorporate his celebration into our day. We also have to mention how beautiful the food was and how pleased all of our guests – 90 for the day and 200 for the evening reception – were with the service. For the wedding breakfast, we had an absolutely phenomenal three-course meal, comprising bloody Mary prawn cocktail and tomato and basil soup; beef medallions, dauphinoise potatoes and crushed peppercorn sauce; chicken breast roasted in thyme and

lemon served with dauphinoise potatoes, red wine sauce; white chocolate cheesecake and warm chocolate brownie with chocolate ganache, followed by tea, coffee and cheeseboards. True to the British weather of late, the heavens opened during the evening reception, which was typical, as we had planned a barbecue in the secret garden. But the team assured us they wouldn’t be defeated by a spot of rain and the back-up plan was wonderful. When they brought the barbecue inside later that evening – a medley of 4oz sirloin steak; salmon parcels with herb butter; halloumi, courgette, mushroom, red onion and pepper kebabs; pork and leek sausages; Greek salad; Moroccan cous cous salad; mozzarella and tomato with fresh basil; luxury coleslaw; minted new potatoes and bread roles – noone could resist and our guests still comment on how amazing the food was.
We also hired the Crown’s resident DJ, who had everybody up on their feet dancing, and once we were partied out we spent the night in room one, which was incredible. From the stunning feather print wallpaper to the gold stand-alone bath, each element beautifully complemented one another and the evening was made even more special when we arrived to find all our gifts and cards had been laid out in the dressing room. Most of our guests stayed over too and we had a wonderful breakfast together the next day. We would like to thank Katey, Tori and all the staff for making our day so very special – it was filled with so many fond memories that we will cherish always. You put us entirely at ease with your friendly, warm and professional service and went above and beyond, managing all our requests so effortlessly. We have had nothing but glowing compliments and everything from day one
was made so easy and every detail looked after. It was a dream come true and we are looking forward to coming back and seeing you soon. I would absolutely recommend the Crown to anyone looking to get married. If you’re looking for an intimate, luxury wedding venue, this is certainly the place for you. If you’d like to enquire, the events team would love to hear from you. They’re available to show you round, discuss your ideas and answer any questions from 9am to 9pm Monday-Friday and 9am to 5pm Saturday and Sunday. In the meantime, like them on Facebook for the latest news and announcements, and some brilliant wedding inspiration for brides and grooms-to-be. Enjoy a taste of Bawtry! For a small town we are blessed with a huge selection of fabulous independently-owned restaurants to suit all tastes that would be sure to rival any larger town or city. Many of the restaurants have been established for decades, yet still evolve to attract new clientele whilst holding true to their values of exemplary customer service and fantastic food. There’s also an active and robust Pub Watch scheme in the town ensuring a pleasant and safe atmosphere. The longest established restaurant is the China Rose Cantonese Restaurant, opening its doors over 30 years ago. Regarded as one of the finest Cantonese restaurants in the region for its freshly cooked innovative dishes, it’s now equally popular for its monthly ‘Showtime’ evenings with live music. Hot on its heels in terms of longevity is the four-star Crown Hotel where head chef Caz and her team create dishes which both emulate current food trends and embrace traditional favourites. The ambient restaurant, with its contemporary candlelight, quiet booths and eye-catching chandeliers, make it the perfect place to enjoy fantastic food. More recent favourites, and winners of the Best Contemporary Restaurant of the Year in the 2016 Eastside Magazine Awards, is Caviars Restaurant and Wine Bar, which offers sophisticated fine dining in luxurious, intimate surroundings. If it’s a great steak or rustic pizzas that you fancy then Coleman’s Pizzeria and Steakhouse and Bawtry’s Bar and Brasserie offers two separate dining venues with the same menu. Coleman’s, who won the Reader’s Choice award in the 2016 Eastside Restaurant of the Year Awards, offers contemporary restaurant surroundings, whilst the Bar and Brasserie, who won Best Lunch Award, has great food, a quirky décor scheme and regular live entertainment and music. 31 Market Place Cocktail Bar and Bistro host regular music and comedy nights with delicious meat & cheese platters, crepes, galettes and The Bistro Gin Rack offers 15 delicious gins – making it a great place to relax on its sun trap terrace. A summer favourite for its ‘Grey Goose’ courtyard garden is Ziniz Wine Bar and Tuscan Restaurant. Family run and voted one of the top ten Italian restaurants in the UK by The Times, its contemporary interiors and buzzing atmosphere make it one of Bawtry’s most popular restaurants. The Town House has been situated in the heart of Bawtry for over 20 years but now under new ownership has undergone a visual transformation creating a warm, welcoming and unique interior. It has a fantastic outdoor terrace offering the perfect place to watch the world go by and enjoy evening food and drinks each Thursday, Friday and Saturday. There’s also some fantastic Indian restaurants. Keep an eye out for the town’s latest addition this summer too – a tapas bar in the Courtyard. With so much choice, which will you visit first? WE COULD BE HEROES Team Crown and Team Vanilla Rooms took part in Hallam FM’s Super Hero Day for the Cash for Kids charity. All of the staff were dressed as super heroes for the day, held a bake sale and threw cream pies at managing director Craig, in order to raise £500 for the charity.
Underwear charity drive Cherish Dress Agency will once again be collecting used or new bras and new pairs of pants for the charity Smalls for All (www.smallsforall.org) during the month of July to be sent out to Africa. Underwear may seem insignificant, but because many women and children in Africa can’t afford underwear, they fall victim to disease and attack. Girls who are lucky enough to have a place in school often miss three or four days a month due to a lack of underwear. Smalls for All donates underwear in many ways such as through links with established charities, through hospitals that treat women with conditions like fistula and through IDP camps and children’s homes and orphanages. Help them by bringing your items to Cherish, 54-56 High Street, Bawtry, Tel: 07584 107537. July opening hours: Tues–Sat, 10am-4pm.
Wedding bells for Carly Congratulations to Carly Fairchild and Tom Barnett on their recent engagement. Carly, of Ziniz and Roccos celebrated her 30th birthday with friends and family, but she had no idea that her long term partner, Tom Barnett, was about to make her the happiest girl in the world with a dream wedding proposal. She said: “I am the happiest girl in the world! I could not have a better man in my life. It was a truly magical night. It was the best surprise ever and I’m so happy so many people I love got to share such a special moment.”
The Market Bar is back The Market Bar has reopened its doors and is under new ownership of Ben Grayson. Ben is a popular figure around Bawtry, where he has worked at Coco Ice (now 31 Market Place) and Bawtry’s Wine Bar for the last three years. It has always been Ben’s goal to run his own bar, and when this opportunity arrived he grabbed it with both hands. Ben said: “The last two weeks have certainly been a shock to the system, but well worth it. We have started to give the bar a new look with many more changes on the way. It’s a small bar, so we are maximising the space we have.” Eastside | www.eastsidemag.co.uk 72

WITH RECORD-BREAKING RESULTS AND FANTASTIC FACILITIES, QUEEN ETHELBURGA’S IS ONE OF THE NORTH’S LEADING INDEPENDENT SCHOOLS.
A centre of excellence ounded in 1912, Queen Ethelburga’s Collegiate is a day and boarding school with 1500 pupils aged from 5 years to 18 years and from over 40 different countries. Set in 120 acres of beautiful North Yorkshire countryside, the campus has some of the most impressive study, boarding and leisure facilities in the independent school sector. 2016 saw QE celebrate its best ever A level results. Queen Ethelburga’s College was ranked the top day and boarding school in the North of England, according to the Daily Telegraph 2016 League Table for percentage A*/A A levels and equivalent qualifications. It scored 87 per cent, which ranked it top in the north and the second UK day and boarding school overall. The Faculty of Queen Ethelburga’s, the Collegiate’s other sixth form school, scored 84 per cent with its percentage of A*/A A levels and equivalent qualifications in the Daily Telegraph table, placing it second in the north and fourth in the list of UK day and boarding schools. King’s Magna Middle School takes pupils from age 10 years to 14 years. Here the transition is made from class-based teaching to specialist teaching, so that by Years 8 and 9, all subjects will be taught by specialist teachers. By Year 11 students will choose to attend the College, which offers a more traditional academic route of learning with GCSEs and A levels, or the Faculty, which offers GCSEs and A levels but also more vocational BTEC subjects such as performing arts, fashion or sports science. For many students though, Queen Ethelburga’s is more than a school, it is their home too, and the boarding facilities are

A recent addition to the extensive sports village are QE’s floodlit 3G and grassed sports pitches. Recently opened by Jonny and Alistair Brownlee, they comprise a cricket pitch and outfield area playing home to six wicket squares, five natural and one synthetic. Also a full-size football pitch and a full-size rugby pitch are up and running along side five smaller pitches of varying sizes for dual-use, football and rugby. All pitches have a full drainage and irrigation system. QE runs a Cricket Academy in partnership with The Yorkshire County Cricket Club. This
runs alongside the existing sporting academies – the Rugby Academy, supported by Leeds Rugby Academy and Foundation at Leeds Carnegie and the Netball Academy run by Yorkshire Jets. There will be further development of existing programmes in football, swimming, hockey and basketball, all will have the advantage of use of the facilities in QE’s £30m Sports Village.
