Bold and beautiful Despite his imaginative creations having taken the bridal market by storm, there’s much more to come from designer Ian Stuart, says Stephanie Burns.
W
‘
himsical, theatrical, flamboyant’. In three words, globally renowned bridal designer Ian Stuart perfectly sums up his signature style, a style that has been pored over by brides the world over for well over a decade and continues to attract great acclaim from both customer and peer. Anyone who has taken even a passing interest in fashion or bridalwear will be familiar with Ian’s creations. Boldly taking his needle and thread where few have dared to venture, his more elaborate gowns wouldn’t look out of place in a Renaissance painting and are often held up as the pinnacle of bridal design. Deftly focused on fit, quality, styling and detail, each piece is a work of art inspired by three of the designer’s passions: old films, coffee table books and music. I managed to grab a quick phone call with Ian at the beginning of the year as he was putting the finishing touches to his 2016/2017 collections to discuss the highlights of his illustrious career. In his line of work, days are anything but typical. In and amongst the designing, his time passes by in a whirlwind of meetings with fabric suppliers, modelling agencies, sales agents and jewellery designers, all the while cataloguing and storyboarding the fabrics, laces and trimmings he collects along the way. Days after we spoke, he embarked on one of his regular fabric-finding missions in Hong Kong, China and Taiwan. From a young age, Ian was given a taste of a more international lifestyle than many children are. He was born in Holland in 1967 before moving to Manchester when he was five. Growing up, he adored theatre and the arts and almost signed up to acting school. Instead, he studied design and graduated with a fashion degree from Berkshire College of Art and Design in 1989. Before the course had ended, he had already been snapped up by David Sassoon of
22
Bellville Sassoon – a Chelsea-based couture company that has counted Jackie Kennedy, Audrey Hepburn, Elizabeth Taylor and every member of the royal family except the Queen among its loyal clientele over the years – and chose, accordingly, to specialise in wedding dresses for his final project. “It was a practical decision,” he admits. “I really wanted to do theatrical costumes but I realised that at that time there wasn’t that much work in it. Wedding dresses and eveningwear were the most similar things.” At the age of 25, he secured a job at Sweetheart Gowns – in his words, ‘a big cheesy American bridalwear company’ – where he worked for ten years, winning Wedding Dress Designer of the Year in the USA – a major achievement for an English designer – in the process. In 2002, having moved back to London, Ian set about creating his eponymous company along with fellow designer Peter Tague. “We converted a spare bedroom in the house, started up very small, made a collection, went to show it at a show in Germany and got a full order book. At that moment it [went] from being a dream into ‘this is really tangible and we now have to finance these orders and put them into production and actually make these dresses’. So it made it very, very real.” The Collection Designed by Ian Stuart launched the following year in West Dulwich and has since earned Ian the Bridal Designer of the Year award five times. “Seeing [my own company] get off the ground was a really proud moment because I felt that finally I was free and I didn’t have the restrictions and constraints that working for another company has.You only have to answer to yourself.” Ian’s dresses aren’t for every bride; it takes a strong personality and style to pull off his more daring designs. Just take his bestever selling flower bomb dress as a case in point. Flower bomb, which Ian describes as encompassing all the magic ‘Ian Stuart’

ingredients, burst onto the bridal scene in 2011 and was an instant hit. Such was its success, it featured in the 2014 wedding dress exhibition at the Victoria & Albert Museum alongside dresses worn by Kate Moss, Dita Von Teese and Camilla Parker Bowles. His latest collections, while still heavily featuring this signature style, have travelled in a more demure direction, with 1950s-inspired short styles and dresses with smoother, cleaner silhouettes. They latter may look easier to make than their frothier counterparts, but Ian admits they were even more challenging. “Those dresses look the simplest but they’re actually the most difficult because the draping is so complicated and the dresses are so plain, you can’t hide any mistakes with decorations,” he admits. He’ll no doubt wow yet again with a new shape of dress that would look as good down the aisle as it would on the red carpet. Alongside these Oscar-worthy designs, he’s also been experimenting with some interesting fabric and lace combinations. And his love affair with colour continues with some multi-coloured pastel creations that only he could pull off with style. Unsurprisingly, given his passion for theatre and music, Ian’s favourite job is presenting these new collections and showcasing them with a good dose of his trademark flamboyance. “There’s always a runway show that’s just happened, then there’s the next one to plan ahead for so that’s constantly on my mind,” he says. “I love perfecting that. I love the whole presentation of it, from the music to the set design to the styling of the models.” Since 2007, these shows have not only featured his bridalwear but also his muchloved occasionwear collection Ian Stuart London. And it is these two pillars of Ian’s

Riviera takes the current collection in a more demure direction
career that led him to launch his first flagship store, Blewcoat, last June, which was officially opened by the man who gave Ian his break, David Sassoon. Whether brides are shopping at Blewcoat or one of the boutiques hand-selected exclusively by Ian to stock his dresses – or, indeed, when buying any wedding dress – Ian is outspoken about his dislike for online wedding dress shopping and implores every bride to visit a boutique to find the right style rather than scouring the internet. “You need to be able to see what you’re going to buy in reality and you need to be able to look inside it and know that it’s got the correct construction that’s going to flatter your body,” he says. “When a girl goes into a bridal salon, she’s given expert advice by the sales consultants that will give her guidance and help to eliminate the dresses that are not working for her. The internet is not going to be able to fit you in the dress and do your alterations. It’s not going to advise you on
bridesmaid colours and how to pull it all together. I think it also ruins the whole experience for the bride because it’s a oncein-a-lifetime thing and it should be a pleasurable experience.” For a man who has dedicated his life to ensuring women look and feel their very best on one of the most important days of their life, it’s easy to see why he remains so passionate about doing things the right way. And still, no matter how many brides have sashayed down the aisle on their big day in an Ian Stuart gown, the designer has never tired of seeing it happen. “I feel really happy and proud that somebody had so much choice but they ended up getting one of [my dresses] when there are so many other ones to choose from,” he says. “That feeling when you see someone in one of your designs, it never goes away.” Visit www.ianstuart-bride.com to find your nearest stockist.

hether you’re looking to feel fitter and healthier in preparation for your wedding day, or simply want to relax and enjoy some pampering, by springtime next year, you will be able to take advantage of a brand new multi-million pound spa at Ye Olde Bell Hotel. The project is already well underway and will feature an impressive indoor-to-outdoor hydropool – the only spa in the UK with a bespoke snowstorm experience – in addition to the Sabbia Med sunlight therapy and much more. The spa will also be ideal for luxury pampering during a guest’s stay, for hen parties looking to celebrate in style, or for a wedding anniversary treat. This exciting addition will add to the already impressive offering at this AA four-star rosette hotel. Weddings really are something of a speciality here – each and every one is exceptional in their own way, and the focus is all about you. Enjoy a fairytale ceremony under The Oak Pavilion in the gardens or, in autumn and winter, Ye Olde Bell oozes warmth and character with roaring log fires, oak panelling and leaded windows, especially in December, when the hotel is beautifully lit outside and full of stunning Christmas trees and decor inside. Of course, a stylish wedding begins long before the guests arrive, and the experienced team at Ye Olde Bell are there every step of the way to help you plan. Choose from a range of drinks and menu packages or create your own. Arrive to Pimms, Prosecco or a more contemporary style with mojitos and bottled beers with creative canapes. Once the party’s over, retreat to one of their stunning bridal suites or a luxury lodge. From a medieval four-poster to a regal Downton Abbeystyle suite, they’re all individual in style. Their two interlinking selfcontained luxury lodges are also ideal for bridal parties getting ready on the big day, or as a place for family and friends to stay. 've had lots of emails asking what can help with this, and there are many approaches that can help. Hypnotherapy is very good in the treatment of any fears or phobia including flying. There has been a lot of published research showing how beneficial hypnosis is with fears and phobias. Many people with a fear like this will often avoid going on holiday. With hypnotherapy there are certain techniques that can help a hypnotherapist will relax the client into a relaxed and focussed trance. Whereby the mind is then open to suggestions as the unconscious mind can be accessed, which opens the door to bringing about the desired change. It is also usually part of the hypnotherapy programme to teach the person with the fear self-help tools to help in the case of panic attacks, anxiety etc. Hypnotherapy helps you overcome your fear or phobia by reprogramming your minds reaction to the trigger. Alongside the hypnotherapy, neuro-linguistic programming (NLP) is also very useful and there are fast phobia cures that can be used to help in unison with the hypnotherapy Self-hypnosis with affirmation work is also very useful and will help reaffirm the hypnotherapy suggestions and the fast phobia cure.
Q&A: Send your wellbeing questions to Liz @ Elizabethann61@live.co.uk One will be chosen and published monthly. Clinic @ The Vanilla Rooms Bawtry www.ElizabethAnnBawtry.com Dear Liz I am about to go on holiday with my family and am worried I will spoil it for everyone. I have a terrible fear of flying, worry incessantly before the flight, have dizzy spells on the plane, feel hot, have chest pains and am very anxious. I then spend all the holiday worrying about the journey home. Stephanie, Doncaster Dear Stephanie I would suggest hypnotherapy as a tool of change. There are many different techniques that can be used to help. A flying phobia is a situational change phobia. The symptoms you are experiencing are common symptoms suffered with a phobia. Techniques used during the hypnotherapy will vary from person to person, but it is always good to have training in self-relaxation techniques and affirmations. Hypnotherapy can also help with relaxation and visualisation techniques for desensitisation and forming new habits such as being more calm and relaxed. All of the above are available with me @ The Vanilla Rooms Bawtry.

T
he Aurora Wellbeing Centre not only provides cancer patients with complimentary beauty and holistic treatments to help raise their self-esteem and confidence, but the facilities are also open to the public, and all money spent goes back into the Aurora charity. Eastside’s Terri Moore and Rebecca Hume popped in to the centre on Scott Lane for some well-deserved pampering. Rebecca had semipermanent lashes applied, which are only available at Aurora with Jessica Walsh. Marvellash products are used for this treatment, anti-wrinkle gel patches, lashes in a variety of sizes and Rebecca’s sensitive glue. The lashes lashes take around one
hour to apply, and cost £38 for a full set and £18 for infills, which are recommended every two to four weeks. Removal is also included within the cost for any lashes that are applied by Aurora, so there is minimal damage to a client’s own lashes. “The whole experience was very relaxing for me,” Rebecca said. “The lashes are subtle in that they add length to your own lashes and create a natural look, making them suitable for both day-time and evening looks and they are so lightweight I barely know that they are there.” Terri had the Nioxin Derma Scalp Renew Therapy treatment, which costs £22 and is like a facial for the scalp. It is used as the first step to other Nioxin Treatments for hair loss and thinning hair and is the only product on the market approved by a trichologist. The treatment is applied to dry, unwashed hair, left to get to work for ten minutes then washed off with the Nioxin shampoo and conditioner and blow-dried
with Diaboost Thickening Xtrafusion Treatment, which makes hair look thicker and Terri trialled fuller. the Nioxin Terri said: “I suffer from psoriasis every now and again and the results I’ve seen are amazing; my scalp felt very clean and my hair felt thicker and healthier afterwards.” This treatment can be used on anyone who wants thicker hair, or those who have bald patches, receding hair lines, thin hair, breakage and, most importantly, for Aurora, can be used on cancer patients going through chemotherapy. W
e’ve been springing into sport in Bawtry as the warmer weather has
arrived. Bawtry was painted yellow in April as the Tour de Yorkshire flew through the town for the first time bringing cycling fever with it. Residents, business owners and visitors embraced the spirit of the event and there was even a yellow Tour de Yorkshire wedding stunt organised by the Crown Hotel, Celebrations of Bawtry, Be Envied and Bawtry Flowers. If all this cycling has inspired you to take to two wheels then why not call in to Bawtry’s own cycle shop, Cycle Works. They’ve got a great range of accessories in store as well as bikes from highly sought after Orbea – one of the longest established cycle brands in the world. Whether you want your existing bike safety checked and fine tuning for the summer, or you want a brand new bike custom built to order, Jake will be able to give you plenty of advice and help. For those who prefer four hooves to two wheels the fifth Visit Bawtry Race Day was a huge success in May. Held at Doncaster Racecourse, this year’s event sponsors were the

However, if golf is more your thing then Robinsons of Bawtry is hosting a charity golf day in association with Alexander Calder Financial to raise money for Firefly Rebecca Dickenson Cancer Charity. Held at Doncaster Golf Club on 16 June, there are more than £2,000 worth of prizes up for grabs, with all entry money from the event going to Firefly. All golfers will receive enjoy a sandwich and hot drink before they tee off with a hot meal afterwards. And finally, congratulations to Yorkshire Caravans who are celebrating an amazing 85 years in business this summer, China Rose who are celebrating 25 years in their current South Parade premises, Bawtry Flowers who have just celebrated their third anniversary and to Bawtry Eye Academy and Limited 2 Art who are moving to their new premises. Still going strong! Yorkshire Caravans is celebrating 85 years of family-owned business success.
A
Yorkshire-based, family-owned company is proud to be celebrating an amazing 85 years in business this summer. Yorkshire Caravans of Bawtry near Doncaster, the oldest and largest independent retailer of caravans, awnings and leisure accessories in the UK, has seen its sales go from strength to strength in recent decades, as droves of people discover the delight of caravanning and holidaying at home, or on the near continent. “We are delighted to be celebrating 85 years in business and to be doing so when business is so prosperous,” said Jon Goulden Chairman. “We have a great team, great products and superior customer service and will be enhancing this shortly with the introduction of a dedicated handover showroom to enhance our customer experience.” The four heated bays, under the guidance

of newly appointed handover co-ordinator Carol Shephard, will mean that when customers collect their caravans they can enjoy a special one to one experience including a glass of fizz, a photo in front of their new caravan and a Yorkshire Produce survival kit. Jon commented; “We are proud to be leading the way and recognising in a very positive way that purchasing a caravan is a big investment that all the family get involved in. We want people to enjoy every part of the experience and make them feel very special.” Originally created by Percy Smith the site on the Great North Road
was transformed from a petrol station in 1931. The business was then passed to his late son Derek, who people talk about affectionately as Mr Smith, and who was famous for introducing some of the best caravan franchises in the industry to the site along with the old 1980’s TV advertising slogan, ‘Can we ‘ave one Dad?’ It memorably introduced caravanning to the wider market with the likes of celebrities Geoff Capes, Jim Bowen and Terry Scott endorsing it by playing their part in the campaign. And in honour of the occasion, a fantastic little caravan has been decorated with special anniversary decals including the old TV slogan and takes pride of place in the front grounds of the 34-acre site. The current Chairman is Jon Goulden, step-son to Derek, who joined the company in 1999 and is supported by his wife Jo and a team of 45 employees. “This year has also been significant as we have produced designed and manufactured an exclusive factory-built caravan range called the Swift Exclusive 2016, which is available only from Yorkshire Caravans and has seen an unprecedented demand,” said Jon. “It’s a great

mid-range tourer which has filled a real market niche and really does provide the ultimate caravanning experience. With £1,800 of extras, too, it has been so well received by our existing and prospective customers.” To celebrate its iconic anniversary, a party will be held at China Rose restaurant in Bawtry on Thursday June 23. Furthermore, a series of promotional weekends will be taking place during July, details of which will be announced closer to the time. Other plans for the future include a children’s outdoor play area and retail outlets in a courtyard environment. Current facilities onsite include Outdoor Leisure Department, Awning Department, Parts and Aftercare Department, Caravan Storage and on site coffee shop, which is also open to non customers too, all of which add to the customer experience. An expert to the rescue When Eastside’s Terri Moore injured her back, she knew just who to call.
T
www www.chapmanphysiotherapy.com w..chapmanphysiotherapy .ch otherapy y.com .
here are certain things that only a specialist can fix. This is something Eastside publishing manager Terri Moore knows all too well. She recalls: “I recently went to the gym and pulled my back. I couldn’t sleep that night as I was in so much pain and the next day, I could barely walk or stand up straight. My lower back had completely seized up.” Terri’s GP prescribed pain killers and muscle relaxants, but three days later, nothing had changed. So finally, she went to see a specialist; Victoria Chapman at Chapman Physiotherapy. After gathering Terri’s medical history and asking a few questions, Victoria checked her posture. Terri was slightly hunched and was leaning to one side. She was also sometimes experiencing numbness in one leg. Victoria Victoria concluded that Chapman Terri probably had a disc

bulge which was irritating a nerve route. Whilst this cannot be confirmed without an MRI scan, treatment can commence immediately, so she worked on Terri for 30 minutes to get the disc away from the nerve. “Immediately after, I could stand up straight and was in a lot less pain,” says Terri. “She advised me to sleep on my front and to do some exercises to keep me moving and thereafter, strengthen my core to prevent it happening again.” That night Terri slept much better. The next day, she could move easily with little pain. “The transformation was unbelievable,” confirms Terri. “The fact that she made it so much better after just half an hour of stretches is amazing. “I am very grateful and highly recommend Chapman Physiotherapy. Bawtry in yellow The Tour de Yorkshire lived up to all expectations as Bawtry embraced the spirit and gathered to cheer on the cyclists.
W
ith yellow bunting, flags, window decorations and even a glorious yellow sun in the sky, the streets of Bawtry were bursting with Tour de Yorkshire fever when the bike race passed through the town on 30 April. Bawtry’s retailers, residents and visitors were overcome by cycling excitement as both the men’s and women’s races sped through the town during Stage Two of the Tour. Cyclists began the stage at Otley, hometown of cycling world champion Lizzie Armistead, then headed south, passing Conisbrough Castle and zipping through Tickhill and Bawtry, before crossing the finish line in Doncaster. The stage included three King/Queen of the Mountains and some sprints, pushing the cyclists to the limit against a beautiful Yorkshire backdrop. Despite rain along other sections of the route, Bawtry was beautiful all day and the crowds enjoyed a wealth of Tour de Yorkshire themed events in celebration of the race.Visitors and retailers wore special commemorative tshirts and were given whistles to blow, adding to the deafening cheers as riders passed through Bawtry. Preparation for the race’s arrival began the week before riders were even in the saddle with
Helen Wallace and Sonny Sethi from Bawtry Eye Academy cycling the 81-mile long Stage Two of the Tour to raise £6,000 for Firefly Cancer Awareness and Support plus awareness of the Keepmoat Stadium’s bike library. On the day Bawtry’s businesses pulled out the stops in celebration of all things cycling. The Crown Hotel hosted a Tour de Yorkshire themed wedding stunt alongside Celebrations of Bawtry, Be Envied and Bawtry Flowers. Pupils from Mayflower Primary School created land art in the shape of a bike and many had their faces painted by Magic Faces on race day. And for kids and grownups alike The Vanilla Rooms were offering free yellow hair spray, the ultimate in Tour de Yorkshire style. On top of all the fun, visitors had the opportunity to win big with the Co-Operative supermarket and Cycle Works teaming up to run a Community Grand Draw. The lucky winner received an Orbea Grow 2 children’s bike. Bawtry eateries Caviars, 31 Market Place Cocktail Bar and Bistro, and Bawtry Bar and Brasserie kept crowds refreshed throughout the day with BBQs, French themed cuisine and special menus. The stage was an important milestone for the Tour de Yorkshire because it was the first
time in the race’s short history that the men’s and women’s races followed the same route. After flying through Bawtry riders went on to finish the stage in Doncaster, where Team Sky’s Danny Van Poppel won the men’s race after an exciting sprint finish in the final five kilometres.Three British riders made the top ten for the day. One Pro member Chris Opie narrowly missed out on a podium position after finishing fourth whilst JLY Condor teammates Chris Lawless and Russell Downing clinched eighth and ninth respectively. The British women fared better than the men, taking half of the top ten places. Dutch rider Kirsten Wild beat Wiggle High5’s Lucy Garner to the top spot whilst world champion and local girl Lizzie Armstead finished 26th. Bawtry-born Scott James Davies, whose companies Factor Bikes and Black Inc Wheels provide equipment for the ONE Pro Cycling, returned to his hometown to film the race from within the team car. Despite now living in France, the home of the Tour de Yorkshire’s inspiration, Scott still enjoys getting out on his bike in Bawtry. He said: “I sometimes ride from my base in Manchester over to Bawtry across the Pennines. That’s a pretty stunning ride, it’s not too long but truly beautiful.” www.visitbawtry.com | 13

| RETAILER OF THE MONTH
www.visitbawtry.com
Double celebration Thirty years in business and Retailer of the Month – Congratulations Robinsons of Bawtry.
R
obinsons of Bawtry have a lot to celebrate. Not only have they been chosen as our Retailer of the Month, they are also currently celebrating 30 successful years in business. Originally launched by Tony Robinson and his late wife in September 1986, Robinsons has been under the ownership of the Jones family – Russell, Wendy and their son James – since 2009. The independent designer boutique has a whole host of accolades under its belt, including being one of only four independents in the UK to offer the Armani Collezioni Made-to-Measure suit service and has been an official Mulberry stockist for over 15 years. “To be recognised by our clients is reassuring and gratifying,” director Russell Jones said. “New customers, who visit from far and wide, are often taken aback by the calibre of our customer service and the high-quality products Robinsons has to offer. “We work closely with our brand managers and our customers to ensure we provide the latest ‘must have’ labels and items as well as fulfilling the needs of our clients. “This approach led to us winning the 2015 Drapers Independents Award for ‘Premium Fashion Independent of the Year’ which was a real high point for us all.” This was an especially important moment, not only for Robinsons but for the town of Bawtry, as they fought off hundreds of independent businesses from all over England, Scotland and Ireland for the top spot. Robinsons is also proud to support local charities and causes. Every October, the store puts on a glamorous fashion show to raise money for Yorkshire Cancer Research.
Last year, they raised £30,000 for the charity, bringing their total to £320,000 since the fashion show began nearly 24 years ago. Last year’s event showcased leading labels such as Armani, Hugo Boss, Ralph Lauren, Mulberry, Moschino and Versace, and was followed by an evening of entertainment from Violinist Alexandra Parker, Rat Pack Singing Waiters, Supreme Showgirls and Whitney Houston tribute act NYA. And though no details have been confirmed, this year’s fashion show promises to be bigger and better than ever. “With it being our 30th anniversary, we hope to make it extra special as we celebrate three decades of business – a fantastic feat for any business,” confirmed Russell. Robinsons is one of the founding members of the Bawtry Retail Association (BRA), an organisation dedicated to promoting Bawtry as a top retail and social destination. When Eastside congratulated him on his recent success, Russell was delighted but said that none of it would have been possible without his hard-working and knowledgeable team: “All of our staff are worth shouting about. Most of
them are fashion graduates, fresh out of university and we see Robinsons as a great springboard for the industry. “One of our employees, Derek Charnley, went on to become the assistant manager at Harvey Nichols in Leeds, before becoming the brand manager for a major label. “James is our marketing director and is the driving force behind our thriving social media and the growth of our ladies wear is completely down to Wendy who is our lady sales director.” Robinsons of Bawtry are currently looking to recruit a new member of staff to work in their Made-To-Measure department. To find out more, contact Russell Jones on russ@robinsonsofbawtry.com or call 01302 711477. Robinsons of Bawtry 2 South Parade, Bawtry, DN10 6JH Tel: 01302 711477 www.robinsonsofbawtry.com

Eight teams will battle it out on the polo field, each sponsored by a local business. The lap of luxury The Crown Hotel’s stunning new bridal suite is perfect for brides who deserve only the very best.
E
very bride deserves luxury on her wedding day. So why not start as you mean to go on, by waking up on the big day in a sumptuous bridal suite? The former traditional bridal suite at The Crown Hotel has been completely refurbished by designer Tracy Gray – who works for Frank Adams Interiors and was previously an interior designer for Laura Ashley – and she has transformed the suite into a bride’s perfect dressing room. Together with the Crown’s team, Tracy drew up a peacock design concept and this theme has been implemented throughout. From beautiful feather print wallpaper to the chair colours and the mosaic bathroom tiles, each element beautifully complements one another. The bedroom features elegant smoked glass suspended mirrors, and panelled grey
walls make for a contemporary finish. The bed also now has under-bed mood lighting, which creates an illusion of the bed floating for a real wow factor. The stunning bathroom includes a gold double-ended stand-alone bath – perfect for two – and a drench shower. Most importantly, for the morning of the wedding, there is a fabulous separate dressing room with a dressing table – perfect for brides to have their hair and makeup done – and full-length mirror, for the breath-taking moment the bride steps into her dress. While this newly refurbished room is the perfect place for brides and couples to spend the night, it’s also ideal if you’d simply like to treat the other half to something truly special, or for companies looking to impress an important client. Whatever your reason for a stay in this
luxurious suite, it’s the perfect opportunity to enjoy some indulgence and treat yourself to the deluxe Crown experience. This new suite needs a new name to match and the Crown are asking Eastside readers to come up with ideas. If a winner is chosen, the lucky person will be treated to a night’s stay in the stylish suite. Send your entry to Katey Dent sales@crownhotelbawtry.com along with your contact details. The winner may be announced in next month’s Eastside! DARREN MARKING HIS MARK Darren Rogan is the executive chef at both Caviars and The Separatist Inn. He started out as a part-time kitchen porter throughout his last year at school and, inspired by his grandad, who was a chef in the British army, he continued to train as a chef. He has worked in several gastro pubs as well as Lincoln’s AA Rosette Wig and Mitre and Hallamshire Golf Club. “I have worked under many head chefs but the one that helped mould me into the chef I am today is Saleem Ahmed at the Wig and Mitre,” Darren says. “He introduced me to a different style and quality of food and really pushed me. I also take a lot of inspiration from chefs like Glynne Purnell for his originality and Gordan Ramsay for his passion for perfection.” With an eclectic style of cooking Darren likes to be creative and use new and unusual flavour combinations to push boundaries and he says: “My idea of good food is a plate that is just as impressive visually as it is to eat, and has a nice balance of colours, textures and flavours.” And finally, Darren’s top tip is: “When portioning rolled out pastry, biscuit dough, or fresh pasta – if you need perfectly straight lines – a pizza cutter is my weapon of choice.” 26 | www.visitbawtry.com

Tipster Roger Hart was also on hand in the Visit Bawtry marquee at the beginning of the night to go through the race card with everyone. Guests were entertained with live music from Jack of Harps and The Dealers throughout the evening and Will Young performed all his greatest hits once the racing had finished.

SOAK UP THE SUN Phoebe Seymour offers some natural ways to protect your skin against the ravages of the sun this summer.
S
ummer is finally here and whilst it is always important to wear sun protection, nature has its own way of helping protect and perfect our skin. Check out these five super-foods which not only nourish your skin, but have been scientifically proven to boost your body’s resistance to sunburn as well. The natural look never sounded so appealing.
Olive oil
Too much sun exposure can dramatically age our skin and whilst olive oil isn’t the fountain of youth, it can play a significant part in keeping our skin young. In 2012, researchers found that a higher consumption of olive oil (two teaspoons a day) was associated with 31 per cent fewer signs of aging, when compared with a lower consumption (about one teaspoon). It even beat other oils because unlike sunflower and peanut oil, 75 per cent of the fat in olive oil is monounsaturated fatty acids, which are believed to play a role in this boost. Olive oil has also been used as a moisturiser for centuries and its antioxidants and natural acids help strengthen the skin to create a natural barrier against the harmful effects of the sun. TIP: Add a few tablespoons of olive oil and two drops of lavender essential oil to a bath for a moisturising and refreshing effect.
Tomatoes
Don’t get red in the face this summer – eat this red fruit instead (and yes, it is a fruit – not a vegetable). According to a UK study in 2008, those who ate five tablespoons of tomato paste daily, along with almost a tablespoon of olive oil for 12 weeks, had 33 per cent more protection from sunburn compared to a control group that ate just olive oil. Tomatoes are full of the antioxidant lycopene which neutralises the free radicals produced from too much sun, improves skin’s natural SPF and minimises any inflammatory response to UV damage. These results are especially high in cooked, processed tomato pastes and sauces as the lycopene in these is much more bioavailable, meaning our bodies absorb more. TIP: Make your own Bloody Marys with tinned tomatoes. Most tomato juices are full of added sugar and salt. Hold the alcohol for a healthier option.

Coconut oil
It’s only in recent years that we’ve come to realise how important this natural ingredient is. Used in cooking, it can help reduce heart disease and aid weight loss. It is also commonly used in beauty products because of its natural antibacterial, antifungal and moisturising properties. As well as being a great treatment for dry and flaky skin, the collagen-supporting lauric acid in the oil prevents wrinkles and sagging skin. Indian researchers found that coconut oil performed relatively poor as a sun screen in comparison to oils such as olive and sunflower oils, only blocking 20 per cent of UV light. However, Bruce Fife author of Coconut Cures: Preventing and Treating Common Health Problems with Coconut Oil says: “Millions of people in the tropics use it as their sole source of protection from sunburn and skin cancer …Vitamin D is produced by the action of UV rays from sunlight interacting with cholesterol in our skin.” Fife believes that coconut oil permits just the right amount of UV rays so skin can produce enough vitamin D to stay healthy. However, he recommends “seasoning” pale skin by only spending 15 to 30 minutes in the sun at a time. “After about two weeks or so, your skin will be seasoned enough to stay outdoors for hours with a single coating of coconut oil,” writes Fife. TIP: Find raw, unrefined, virgin organic coconut oil, heat it between your hands to liquify and rub into your skin. As coconut oil has no SPF rating, consult a doctor before use as a sun screen.
Strawberries
Another amazing red fruit that can help protect your skin from sun damage is the strawberry. Strawberries contain a powerful combination of antioxidants and vitamin C, which work to protect your cells from free-radical damage (which happens during sunburn) that can lead to skin cancer. They can also be crushed into a paste and applied to help ease the pain of sunburn and to help heal your skin. TIP: Mash a few ripened strawberries and slather them on your sunburn for natural relief, then rinse off after a few minutes. If you want to avoid sticky fruit, try grinding up a cup of porridge oats (high in antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties) in a food processor and either add to a bath or compress in a wet flannel, applying every two to four hours.
Green tea
A refreshing cup of green tea not only calms the mind, it protects the body too. In a study published in the Journal of Nutrition in 2011, people who drank a beverage containing green tea polyphenols daily for 12 weeks had smoother and more elastic skin, and had one-quarter less sun damage when exposed to UV light compared to a control group. Green tea also contains catechins including EGCGs (antioxidants) which boost blood flow and oxygen to the skin, delivering key nutrients to keep your complexion healthy. Catechins have disease-preventing properties and protect against sunburn inflammation and long-term UV radiation damage. It even contains tannic acid, which helps calm the pain from sunburn. TIP: Two cups a day could help provide additional sun protection – just make sure it’s a decaf as caffeine dehydrates the skin. Try a strawberry-infused green tea for an extra summer boost of protection.

Mr Kazzazi
A new you
If you’re looking to improve your body, VASERlipo is proven to produce results – and it’s available at the Natural Look Clinic.
W
ith summer holidays approaching, many people will begin to notice their body hang-ups even more and look for ways and means to get that summer body they’ve always wanted. There are areas of the body which, in spite of healthy diet and exercising, just won't shift. Natural Look Clinic can help with VASERLiposuction. VASERlipo is a good alternative to traditional liposuction that is clinically proven to produce even results from a single procedure, with less pain and recovery time. It is unique in its ability to target fat while leaving the surrounding tissues intact; it is powerful enough to eliminate localised areas of fat in problem areas such as arms, abs, flanks and thighs, but gentle enough to treat more delicate areas as well. This advanced body-sculpting technique, which can be done on multiple areas in a single procedure, gently sculpts and shapes your body, giving you the proportional body contours you’ve craved. It’s not designed for loss of weight but is very good at getting rid of stubborn areas in order to make you feel more comfortable in your clothes. Consultant surgeon Mr Kazzazi and his team take time to listen to your exact requirements to ensure they deliver the very best results. The CQC-approved clinic is supported by a team of NHS consultant anaesthetists and an excellent team of nursing and reception staff. Every positive comment from the clinic’s many happy clients includes a favourable mention of the staff, and this excellent customer service is something on which they pride themselves. Trust, quality and service are no doubt

It does not and don’t just offer VASERlipo, but a range of the latest techniques for breast cosmetic surgery, dentistry, advanced specialist facial injectable which are exclusively used by qualified surgeons.
If you’re looking to improve your body, the Natural Look Clinic is an ideal choice. VASER for Men It’s not only women looking for ways to improve their bodies, many men now are increasingly turning to cosmetic procedures to better their bodies and in particular rid themselves of their ‘man boobs’. Mr Kazzazi has extensive expertise in this area and offers fantastic results using VASERlipo and the surgical removal of extra fat and breast tissue. With nipple correction, if needed, it gives men the confidence to wear the clothes they want to wear without worrying about excess lumps and bumps. It can also be used to improve their body contour by getting rid of extra fat in abs and flanks.

Steps to success
Joe Wicks has become an internet sensation but can he really make you ‘lean in 15’? Fiona Barber looks at The Body Coach’s online fitness and nutrition plan.
U
nless you’ve been living under a rock for the last year or so, you will have heard of Joe Wicks – AKA The Body Coach. This fitness guru became an Instagram sensation – he has 1.1million followers to date – by posting 15second long videos cooking up healthy dishes that can be ready in 15 minutes under #leanin15. And, unlike many other diet plans, Joe’s 90-Day Shape, Shift and Sustain (SSS) diet and exercise plan is proving it is here to stay.
What is it? This online fitness and nutrition plan is designed for men and women of all fitness levels who want to get fit, burn fat and build muscle. This tailored plan has already helped transform the lives of over 100,000 people around the world since it launched in 2014. The plan costs £147, and those who sign
up are sent a detailed questionnaire and asked to complete a food diary to get a clear picture of overall health, nutritional history and lifestyle. Joe’s team use this to create a tailored calorie and macronutrient meal plan. The Body Coach also now has two cookery books out, so those who might not want to commit to the cost of the whole plan can get a taster of what dishes to cook and an education on what to eat when.
What do you get for your money? Recipes for over 100 tasty, easy-to-prepare meals including dishes you might not expect to find on a diet plan such as banana protein pancakes, build-up bagels, curries, burgers, and wraps. A new exercise plan is also sent each month, which can be done at the gym or at home, with minimal equipment. Training includes a combination of short HIIT (high intensity interval training) cardio workouts. A major selling point for many on the plan is that there is no need to spend hours and hours exercising, just 20-30 minutes of really pushing yourself is enough to get results. Joe also has his own YouTube channel (TheBodyCoachTV), which features plenty of exercise videos, which is great if you’re stuck for workout ideas.
How does it work? The whole idea of the 90 Day SSS plan is to fuel your body in the correct way and eat in line with your energy demands, which means eating differently on training days and rest days. Carbohydrates are used to refuel after exercise and fats are used as steady fuel for the remainder of the day, night, and on rest days. A training day consists of two reduced carbohydrate meals and one post-workout carb-refuel meal and two snacks, whereas a
22
rest day includes three reduced-carb meals and two snacks.
Steps to success Some of Joe’s top tips to succeed on this plan are: Plan – life will undoubtedly get in the way and you may not be able to follow the plan 100 per cent, but by planning meals and workouts for the week ahead you can minimise poor decisions – like ordering a 12-inch pizza because there’s nothing in the fridge (we’ve all been there). Writing down a meal plan will help you when you are out food shopping too and, most importantly, keep it realistic – if you can only manage to fit in three workouts then only include three in your plan. Prep – spend a couple of hours in the kitchen each weekend prepping meals for the week ahead. By cooking everything yourself you will know exactly what has gone into each meal and many of Joe’s recipes are freezer-friendly, meaning you can batch cook and then you don’t have to worry about faffing around making dinner when you’re tired after a workout. Stock up on essentials – if you aren’t big on home cooking, you need to invest in some much-needed tools and ingredients. Think food scales for portion control, containers to store your meals for the week, a decent wok/pan, and a refillable water bottle to make sure you stay hydrated.

The perfect choice Breast surgery is a big step, but you can relax in the expert care of leading cosmetic surgeon Mr Sultan Hassan.
T
here are many different reasons why women choose to have breast surgery, but often the motive is to boost selfesteem and confidence. Some of the main benefits of breast enlargement surgery are the increased feelings of femininity and confidence and not being restricted in any way when it comes to choosing clothes, underwear and even where to go on holiday. Deciding to have breast surgery can be nerve wracking but, at Elements MediaSpa in Doncaster, there is an expert who can put your mind at ease and talk you through all the options. Mr Sultan Hassan is an expert in reconstructive, breast, body contouring and cosmetic surgery. He performs up to 500 cosmetic surgery procedures per year and has over 17 years’ experience in the industry. He has developed particular Mr Sultan Hassan expertise in breast and facial surgery, as well as body contouring surgery, including cosmetic surgery following massive weight loss. Sultan Hassan believes in the power of cosmetic surgery to transform lives and to help individuals regain their self-confidence. He was voted Cosmetic Surgeon of the Year in 2014-15 by the Good Surgeon Guide based on patient feedback. When it comes to performing surgery, Sultan Hassan is a perfectionist. This meticulous approach enables patients in his care to relax, safe in the knowledge that they are receiving the highest standards of care available in the UK. Mr Hassan’s qualifications are a testament to his skills – as well as being a fully qualified GMC (General Medical Council) registered consultant plastic, reconstructive, breast, cosmetic and aesthetic surgeon, he is on the General Medical Council (GMC) Specialist Register for Plastic Surgery, which entitles him to hold a consultant plastic surgeon post in the NHS. Mr Hassan is a full member of some of the most distinguished associations of plastic surgeons in the
78
world including BAPRAS, ASPS and ISAPS. Mr Hassan’s dedication to quality and safety has quickly led him to become one of the country’s leading celebrity plastic surgeons and attracting patients to him from across the globe. Since 2011, Mr Hassan has focused and sub-specialised in his cosmetic surgical practice and he now offers four main types of breast surgery procedures. These include breast enlargement with implants or fat transfer, breast uplift with or without implants, breast reconstruction and breast reduction. One treatment that has become increasingly popular is using fat transfer to enhance the shape of breasts. This procedure begins with the use of an advanced, minimally invasive liposuction treatment to extract fat from a patient's chosen area(s), which is usually performed under local anaesthetic and intravenous sedation. The extracted fat is then refined before it is carefully injected in layers into the breasts to create volume and definition. As both parts of a fat transfer are minimallyinvasive without the need for general anaesthetic, no overnight hospital stay is usually required, making recovery and downtime far less than traditional breast implant surgery.
For more information or to book a consultation with Mr Hassan in Doncaster then please call the Elements clinic on 01302 34 34 32. For more details about treatments offered by Mr Hassan visit www.elements.org.uk

Bespoke homes
Buying new or off plan gives you much more choice – and can save you money long-term, writes Molly McGreevy.
W
ith the government pledging to build a million new homes in the next five years, and offering Help to Buy schemes to give a helping hand to those getting on the property ladder for the first time, now is the perfect time to invest in a new build property. New homes to suit all needs are being built across Doncaster and the surrounding areas. Whether you’re a young couple looking for a starter home, or an expanding family needing more space there’s a whole host of developments in Doncaster to search for the perfect pad. Buying a new home has many advantages. Built to the latest specifications, new builds don’t come with the worrying potential for problems and expensive repairs a couple of years down the line that older houses do. And if any problems do occur all new houses come with a ten-year warranty. Energy efficiency is also taken into account, so new homes are kind to the environment and often have lower utility bills than older houses.
80
In Doncaster, homes at the Belle Vue development on Bawtry Road, could be up to 55 per cent more energy efficient than a similar sized refurbished Victorian property. According to developers Barratt Homes the specialist airtight windows, coated glass and insulated roofs could lead to savings of up to £1,312 a year on energy bills. Depending on what stage in building new homes are bought they are more bespoke to the buyer’s needs than older properties. Off plan properties give the homeowner more control over the location of their home and the features inside. Off plan buyers can discuss their personal needs with developers and influence the building of their new home to make it perfect for them, from selecting a south-facing garden to the colour of tiles in the bathroom. Buying off plan gives you more choice over the design of your new home than an older property, which could require extensive building work or interior design improvements until it is the perfect home for your family.
Companies open their show homes and marketing suites early in development so potential buyers can arrange viewings and learn more about the homes. In Doncaster there is plenty of choice for those looking to buy a new home. Development is underway at sites in Lakeside, Bessacarr, Hatfield, Bawtry, Harworth and many other sites. Properties range from one-bedroom apartments to five-bedroom detached family homes with locations to suit all. Whether you want your new home to be close to the town centre, out in the leafy suburbs or in a convenient location for commuting on the motorway there are new developments in prime locations for all needs. Buying a new home can be a stressful but buying new takes away the stress of a chain and potential structural problems. And you can move in as soon as it’s been decked out according to your personal specifications. With so much exciting residential development in Doncaster now is the time to start searching for your next home.

ES Eating Out
Words and photography: Molly McGreevy
Sweet treat With ice cream, crepes and milkshakes on the menu, Poppadoms and Cream is definitely an Indian with a difference!
D
essert is not often associated with Indian cuisine but at Poppadoms and Cream pudding is pride of place. Greeted by one counter full of colourful wedges of cake and a second filled with a rainbow palette of ice creams it’s obvious that dessert is taken very seriously here. The restaurant is split into two halves. Bright and airy, the front of the restaurant is set aside for desserts, its neon lights and mirrored walls giving a retro ice cream parlour feel. Our visit fell on one of the warmest days of the year and we were told that plans are in place to set up some outside seating, so customers can enjoy their ice creams in the sunshine. Walk further down and you reach the more formal sit-down restaurant, with tables set up for dinner service. The main menu is full of classic curry dishes and comes with a handy colour-coded heat key, which was a helpful guide when choosing our dishes. Even with the guide, we were wavering over whether the medium heat would be too spicy, but our waiter came to the rescue, asking what we liked before nodding knowingly and disappearing into the kitchen. After poppadoms and pickles our starters arrived. My bitesized paneer tikka served with a salad garnish was deliciously spiced, whilst my companion’s chicken nambali had a fiery kick to it which was softened by the melted cheese. Petite in portion size, the starters were a tasty sample

of what was to come, without filling us up too much. Our mains arrived still bubbling from the kitchen, and accompanied by a show stopping garlic naan which filled half the table. My biryani was packed full of vegetables whilst the sauce was full of flavour and spiced just to my liking. The mixed Balti was full of tender chunks of meat in a colourful, aromatic sauce. With mains finished we were giddy with anticipation for dessert. Our excitement had been growing since we spotted the ice cream on arrival and we were not disappointed. After much deliberation my companion decided on the After Eight Mint Chocolate Sundae whilst I decided to end the night with one of the restaurant’s Passion Creations and chose the Brownie Explosion. Desserts are the real star of the show at Poppadoms and Cream. The Brownie Explosion stayed true to its name and was a chocolatey treat of Oreo and chocolate gelatos with gooey brownie, chocolate sauce and chopped nuts whilst the more traditional sundae provided a refreshing end to the meal topped with a mountain of fresh whipped cream and After Eight chocolates for that special finishing touch. Despite only selling desserts since March Poppadoms and Cream seem to have gained a good reputation for sweet treats in Doncaster. With mouth-watering waffles and crepes being prepared for delivery alongside two creamy milkshakes as we were leaving, desserts are definitely the main event at Poppadoms and Cream.

Worth going the extra mile
The Cadeby Pub and Restaurant has stood the test of time – and had an exciting menu for Fiona Barber to sample.

here were many great things about the nineties: Nintendo 64s, light-up yo-yos and tamagotchis to name just a few. And while these crazes were replaced by newer fads, other things like middle-hair partings, Calvin Klein’s ck one and, more importantly, the humble gastro pub, managed to stand the test of time. Any gastro pub worth its salt has excellent beer at its core, but the food has to be creative and interesting too, as well as offering a selection of pub classics. Nestled among the spectacular surrounding countryside of Cadeby, The Cadeby Pub and Restaurant is one such venue that offers exactly that, and much more besides. This impressive pub has been lovingly restored in recent years and offers welcoming contemporary décor with staple rustic features. Everything here is locally sourced and prepared on site by their experienced chefs and the menu features a selection of elegant dishes as well as those aforementioned pub classics. On our visit one Saturday evening we began with the Cadeby sharing board. The impressive spread offered a taste of various treats including generous portions of delicious brie and stilton, slices of ham and beef, pots of hummus and chutney and a homemade scotch egg. With beautiful presentation and one of the most excellent pork pies I have eaten, it was a superb start to the evening. For mains, I opted for the seabass fillet.

The crisp-skinned fish was wonderfully complemented by salsify, al dente baby carrots, mushroom tortellini, sautéed new potatoes and a mushroom dressing – this dish really showcased the chef’s attention to detail. Meanwhile, my partner tucked into soused belly pork, pig cheek and pork tenderloin, accompanied by beautiful fondant potato, perfectly crisp apple crackling and a pork jus – a truly marvellous meaty treat. On to dessert, and – for me – the real highlight of the evening; orange crème brûlée. Served with brandy snaps, orange ice cream, orange crisp and honeycomb, the rich creamy textures were offset wonderfully by the crisp brandy snaps, while the zestiness of the orange added an additional dimension. As well as an excellent menu, The Cadeby offers a fantastic range of real ales, wines and speciality whiskies; catering for all tastes. In addition, the extensive function facilities – perfect for weddings, parties and corporate events – mean there’s much more to this beautiful pub and restaurant than initially meets the eye. The huge beer garden is perfect to make the most of the summer sun and, as a bonus, each Friday throughout June there will be tapas and pizza cooked on the terrace between midday and 6pm. What better way to while away an afternoon? The Cadeby might not be right on your doorstep, but with stunning surroundings, excellent food and drink and friendly staff, it’s well worth going the extra mile for.

Weigh to go…

here was a certain irony about going to The Old Weighing Rooms at Doncaster Racecourse. As a part of me looked forward to eating my weight in food, another part of me gazed guiltily at the huge red weighing scales outside the main entrance. However, this thought quickly disappeared as I entered the spacious 1920s bar area with its domed glass ceiling, jazz band in the corner and matching jazz-inspired cocktails. My partner ordered a fruity New Orleans, whilst I sipped on a huge cranberry and gin-based Norah Jones. Fittingly, it was a warm and sunny evening and as I listened to laid-back jazz and watched suited men and stylish women clink glasses outside on the porch, I was transported to a gentler, classier era. We were then guided through to the restaurant area. Now a contemporary dining area with grey walls and geometric wallpaper, the old wooden beams in the ceiling and clothes pegs lining the walls served as a reminder that this was originally the jockeys’ changing rooms. “We’ve tried to keep the old aesthetic and mix it with the new,” the restaurant manager Damien Gallagher told us.
www.regionalmagazine.co.uk
And although it was their monthly Friday steak night, he assured us that the menu was just as mixed. “We feel it is important to keep the same spring menu too, to give people more choice,” he confirmed. We embraced this philosophy by ordering starters which juxtaposed with our mains. I had the spiced Redcar crab – a crab mousse piled high on a slice of toasted sourdough bread and a Thai fishcake on a bed of balsamic vinegar – infused salad, whilst my partner had the tian of Mediterranean vegetables – a stack of roasted courgettes and tomatoes topped with a tomato and saffron sauce. For mains, I embraced my hungry side with a 10oz sirloin, whilst my partner went with a more modest 7oz fillet. Served with chunky chips and a buttery béarnaise sauce, my medium-rare steak was tender and juicy. My partner’s medium steak, accompanied by a peppercorn sauce, had a more distinctly meaty flavour. For dessert, my partner tackled the trio of chocolate, which included a warm chocolate brownie, creamy chocolate cheesecake and white chocolate crème brulée with a satisfyingly crunchy lid – a dessert obstacle course that puts even the biggest sweet tooth through their paces. I went with the lighter banana parfait, a delicious slice of creamy ice cream, topped with caramelised walnuts providing a bitter-sweet balance. This contrast of smooth jazz and hearty steaks, crossed with the classic features of the weighing rooms and modern décor turned out to be a mismatch made in heaven. So the next time you have the weighty decision of choosing a restaurant on a Friday night, few can balance an interesting venue and a varied menu like The Old Weighing Rooms can.

A 16-year-old, with a rare chromosome disorder is set to take part in a family trip to the zoo, thanks to kind-hearted shoppers at Lakeside Village. Aaron Faulkner from Kirk Sandall and his family will visit Chessington Zoo for an overnight stay later this year thanks to the donation by Lakeside Village and the Thorne Lions to Post Pals, a small charity that is dedicated to making seriously ill children and their siblings smile by sending cards, letters, little gifts, support and friendship. Aaron’s mum Joanne Faulkner said: “We are really pleased to have been given this opportunity to take the family away for an overnight stay. The charity arranges events which give families the opportunity to meet up with other families who may be going through similar difficulties.” Aaron has cerebral palsy and is wheelchair bound. He had a gastrostomy fitted when he was seven years old and is now tube fed. He suffers badly in the winter months, often ending up in hospital due to colds turning into pneumonia. The money raised by Lakeside Village shoppers and the Thorne Lions was donated to Doncaster Royal Infirmary (DRI) to buy equipment for Ward 25 and to Post Pal’s who have used it to pay for Aaron’s trip. For more information about Post Pals visit www.postpals.co.uk.
