Spirit of adventure SLEEK, SOPHISTICATED AND VALUE FOR MONEY. PHOEBE SEYMOUR DISCOVERS THAT THE JEEP RENEGADE IS MUCH MORE THAN JUST A FUNCTIONAL OFF-ROADER. o slip behind the wheel of a Jeep is to feel completely in control, whether you are tackling the urban sprawl of Doncaster or an off-road track. I had come to Pentagon Doncaster on Wheatley Hall Road, a local family business that offers a wide selection of Jeep and Alfa Romeo, to take the new Jeep Renegade for a spin. The showroom has only been open 18 months, but as part of a company that has been successfully selling and repairing cars for thousands of satisfied customers for over 25 years, the team at Pentagon have quickly established themselves as the one of the top Jeep dealers in the country. Fittingly, Jeep is a trusted and wellestablished American brand, having been around since 1941. So, what is it that makes people choose Jeep time and time again? “When it comes to value for money, you can’t beat a Jeep,” explained senior sales Jeep specialist, Stephan Coetzee. “Freedom, adventure, luxury and outdoor living are all embodied in this brand. People therefore often view Jeeps as functional off-roading vehicles, yet in recent years they have also become much more sophisticated and versatile. Renegade comes in four styles; Sport, Longitude, Limited and Trailhawk, each with a distinct look and level of specification but every version has a premium finish and a comfortable, practical layout inside. With all this comfort, safety and luxury, it is no wonder the average ownership for a Jeep is nine years. Looking at the Renegade in the Pentagon showroom, it was surprisingly lower and sleeker than it’s bigger and boxier ancestors. But as I hopped in, there was loads of head space and leg room for backseat passengers, as well as a huge boot. You can get the Renegade in a petrol or diesel. I test drove a diesel nine-speed automatic, but if you want that extra bit of control, you can opt for a manual. Still being a reasonably big car, I thought I would feel

T

self-conscious out on the road, but I effortlessly kept within the lane markings. Had I drifted, the Renegade has a lane departure warning system to get me back on track. Its other safety features include anticollision brakes, cruise control and parking sensors. To put the latter to the test, I went to a supermarket car park. The wing mirrors were so big, I wasn’t worried about reversing into spaces, though it was reassuring to know DETAILS Model: Jeep Renegade Limited Price: From £20,000 Engine: 2-litre diesel CO2 Emissions: 134g/km Economy: 55.4 mpg (combined)

the sensors were on. When it came to going into a space front first, I thought I’d pulled up close to the kerb, but when I got out, there was still loads more room to manoeuvre. As I drove back to the showroom, I was a little chilly so I took advantage of the option to heat the seats and steering wheel, which I think is a great idea (especially when driving during those cold winter

months). Along with its high and comfortable seats, inbuilt satellite navigation, smooth handling and ability to tackle any terrain (it has been Trail Rated, meaning it has been vigorously tested), the Renegade is the perfect car for a long and adventurous car journey. What’s more, the customer service at Pentagon was excellent. The company’s brilliant reputation, combined with Stephan’s expert knowledge and friendly advice, meant I felt in safe hands. And ranging from £20,000 to £29,000, he was right – the Jeep Renegade is amazing value for money. The Jeep range at Pentagon Doncaster also includes the Grand Cherokee and Wrangler. Look out for the brand new Jeep Compass, which will be landing in the showroom later this year. Q&A:

HYPNOSIS CAN HELP WITH ANY NUMBER OF CONDITIONS – AND ANYBODY CAN BENEFIT. ELIZABETH ANN THERAPIES EXPLAINS.

Send your wellbeing questions to Liz @ Elizabethann61@live.co.uk One will be chosen and published monthly. Clinic @ The Vanilla Rooms The Crown HotelBawtry. www.elizabethannbawtry.com

Dear Liz

ention hypnosis and people tend to think of stage shows and people doing unusual things. Let’s dispel these myths and allow people to experience the wonderful benefits of hypnosis to enhance their lives.

I have become overweight over the past two years since changing jobs. I’ve tried various diets and nothing seems to work. I feel unattractive, unhealthy and my confidence is suffering. Could hypnotherapy help me?

M

Can people with a strong will be hypnotized?

Yes, it is shown that intelligent people can be hypnotized faster because they have greater access to their imagination, and can follow instructions. In fact, those with an extremely low intelligence cannot be hypnotized at all. The biggest prerequisite to someone being able to be hypnotized is their willingness. What is hypnosis like?

There is a feeling of well-being. The hypnotic state is like a meditation, where the body is relaxed but the mind has heightened awareness. Limbs feel leaden or light, tingly or a little numb. The perception of time is also distorted where an hour might seem like a few minutes. All hypnotized subjects may be relaxed but they are perfectly capable of saying no, or terminating hypnosis all by themselves. There is research to show this. What can hypnotherapy be used for?

The list is endless... anxiety, weight loss, stress, depression, OCD, panic attacks, phobias, public speaking, competition nerves, pain control and a whole lot more.

Deborah, Doncaster

Dear Deborah

Yes, hypnotherapy has a high success rate with weight issues. There are many approaches that can be used, depending on what the problems are. The Gastric Band Programme is a highly successful programme for people who have stones rather than pounds to lose, it’s becoming the number one weight loss hypno programme with and 80 to 90 per cent success rate. styles and trends – fresh off the runway – for you to choose from. Here are just a couple of ways you can take inspiration from the London Fashion Week Men’s AW17 shows and ‘get the look’ ahead of the season.

Chester Barrie AW17 show Phillipp Haug and the TONI&GUY Session Team Style ‘After Party’ Hair at the Chester Barrie AW17 show. In previous seasons, English tailoring specialists Savile Row launched designs around ‘Garden Party’ and ‘Red Carpet’ themes. This season, it was all about the ‘After Party’ – six friends coming together after separate evenings out – which allowed for a variety of looks to be presented. The Hair Taking inspiration from the after-party idea, hair was neat and sleek and loose and natural. Get the Look 1 If needed, spray down hair using label.m Water Spray Bottle, using your fingers brush away from face 2 Distribute label.m Curl Cream throughout (if hair is straight use label.m Souffle) 3 Gently dry with the label.m Magic Diffuser (top tip, use 50% heat and 50% power to ensure hair doesn’t dry out completely) 4 Whether you have a lot of texture or hair is straight, finish off with Soufflè The Products label.m Curl Cream and label.m Soufflè The Kit label.m Magic Diffuser

E.Tautz AW17 show Kevin Luchmun and the TONI&GUY Session Team created natural movement in the hair at the E.Tautz AW17 show. The Collection For his latest collection, Patrick Grant, Creative Director of E.tautz, drew inspiration from Peter Mitchell’s ‘Some Thing means everything to somebody’ photography series, which featured images of scarecrows isolated in fields across the UK. The collection captured the loose and dishevelled nature of these scarecrow images, featuring baggy trousers and loose fitted shirts. The Hair Using the scarecrow concept as a springboard, Kevin and the TONI&GUY Session Team styled soft and bouncy waves that had natural volume and texture. As the models took the catwalk they were seen with hair that had seemingly been rained on and blown in the wind. Get the Look 1 Distribute label.m Thickening Tonic throughout the hair 2 Diffuse and work the hair upwards to create natural movement and volume 3 Set hair with a blast of cold air using the label.m Tourmaline Dryer Black 4 Apply label.m Grooming Cream to create structure, scrunch within the hair to incorporate natural texture. e’ve been springing into sport in Bawtry as the warmer weather has arrived. April played host to another successful Visit Bawtry Race Evening at Doncaster Racecourse. Guests and BRA members flocked in their droves and enjoyed a glamourous evening of top racing action, followed by an after-racing party in Bawtry. This year’s sponsors were The Crown Hotel, Fine & Country, China Rose, Ziniz, Deluxe Hair & Beauty, Origin Broadband and Eastside Magazine. Thank you to all for your continued support and for helping make the event a huge success. “It was a fabulous evening and it was great to see so many Bawtry businesses and patrons supporting the race evening and racecourse,” said commercial manager, Rebecca Burton. “The attendance was up on the corresponding date from 2016, which is fabulous news and shows the theming worked. It’s always great when we can theme the race days and Visit Bawtry was the perfect fit for a ladies evening. It was great having Visit Bawtry involved and looking forward to next year, I am certain it is a race evening which will continue to grow.” Congratulations to Zoe Mulligan, who was the winner of the Spring Best Dressed Ladies competition on the day. She received £100 worth of BRA vouchers as part of her prize. Congratulations also to the event organisers;

Bawtry’s own Emily Harbon, Sarah White and Jo Goulden, along with Sarah Mullen, of this year’s Doncaster Tour de Yorkshire ProAm Charity Bike Ride for Equinox, which took place on 23 April. Around 100 riders took part and raised in excess of £12,000 for Firefly and Cancer Research UK. It is with great regret that the Visit Bawtry Charity Polo Cup (July 2017) has been postponed until 2018.The team have worked tirelessly over the past five years to build the event to be a calendar highlight, however this year, other engagements have meant they are “unable to give the event the time it needs.” Rest assured though, it will return next year bigger and better than ever. BRA has continued to celebrate expediential growth since its launch in 2011 and we are currently enjoying an influx of new members. April also saw the launch of the new website: www.visitbawtry.com, which is bursting with information and news about retailers and the town. Finally, continue to support your local retailer and tell your friends about your visit to Bawtry. Retailers partner with racecourse team to host hugely successful event A partnership between Doncaster Racecourse and Bawtry Retail Association has attracted record numbers to the Spring Ladies Evening event at the Town Moor course last month. A racecard, sponsored entirely by businesses from the popular market town, attracted record crowds in its fifth year and fashionistas flocked to the event with the hope of being chosen as the Best Dressed Lady of the evening for a fast track pass to the St Leger Ladies Day Best Dressed Lady Competition in September. “Our thanks go to the Bawtry businesses who supported our event and attended in their droves to enjoy the racing and help us choose the Best Dressed Lady of the evening, which was awarded to Zoe Mulligan,” said Rebecca Burton, commercial manager at Doncaster Racecourse. “It is always great when we can theme the race days and Visit Bawtry were the perfect fit for Ladies Evening. Crown Hotel, Fine & Country, China Rose, Ziniz, Deluxe Hair & Beauty, Origin Broadband and Eastside magazine. Bawtry businesses, accompanied with friends and guests, enjoyed the evening from the Conduit Suite in the Lazarus Stand and were entertainment by local vocal group The Bowkers, which created a real party atmosphere and the party continued back in Bawtry after racing. “Getting all our member businesses together for such a fantastic night is a great team building event and one that continues to grow and prosper,” said Ross Jarvie, chair of Bawtry Retail Association. “Huge congratulations go to Alex Calzini of Ziniz Restaurant and Wine Bar, who was not only celebrating his 50th birthday, but also his wedding anniversary with his lovely wife Julie. He had to resort though to wearing his flip flops after completing the London Marathon just days before!” Further information about Bawtry Retail Association can be found by visiting www.visitbawtry.com or find them on Facebook at @VisitBawtry.

New additions to the China Rose menu were showcased at a special VIP food and wine tasting evening.

W

hen you are looking at ways to improve your business, sometimes the best people to ask are the ones that keep it ticking – the customers. So when long established Cantonese restaurant China Rose Bawtry wanted to add some exciting new dishes to their menu, they invited 30 friends, customers and representatives from local businesses, including members of the Bawtry Retail Association, to a VIP Food & Wine Tasting Evening to ask what they thought. Head chef, Jason Kwan had developed six new dishes, whilst Terry Rockley of Vintage Wines of Nottingham Ltd had selected six wines to complement them.

General manager, Estelle Johnston, welcomed guests and introduced Jason and Terry before leaving guests to judge each course and leave comments. The first course was two mini curried rolls served with sweet and sour sauce and sweet chilli sauce. The delicate fruit flavours and saccharine sweetness of the Moscato d’Asti white wine meant it was the perfect match with the sweet and sour flavours of the dish. Even those that don’t usually like aubergine were won over by the tempura aubergine with pork stuffing, while opinion was divided over the accompanying beef, mushroom and prawn soup. “Few red wines work with Chinese food

than Italian reds,” declared Terry as he poured guests the second wine of the evening. And the light cherry flavour of the Chianti Reserva proved him right. The battered chicken in lime sauce served with thin slices of spicy potatoes were a resounding success and many guests went back for seconds and thirds. This was served with a dry and full flavoured New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc and like all good white wines, it went well with the chicken. The fourth dish was shredded pork in a rich house special sauce served with rice and an intensely floral Gewurztraminer white wine which took the bitter edge off of the sauce. The next dish of stuffed green chillies with

smashed prawn in black bean sauce had a fresh flavour and the bitter notes of the black bean sauce were complemented by the depth of the red Pinot Noir. The final course of the evening was beef in Kung Po sauce served with a pyramid of rice and asparagus. As this was the spiciest and most flavoursome of the six courses opinion was once again divided, but all of the guests agreed that the presentation was impressive. As guests finished with a dessert of vanilla and chocolate ice cream with diced pieces of strawberry and mashed kiwi and jasmine tea, Jason came back into the dining area to thank the guests and was met with an enthusiast round of applause. “I am so very proud of head chef Jason, our restaurant manager Carly and their

team,” said Estelle. “The new dishes were presented beautifully and tasted absolutely incredible and the service was first class as always. “It is no wonder we have earnt the reputation as one of the finest Cantonese restaurants in the region. The evening has been a wonderful success and we will consider offering similar taster menu evenings in the future.” We look forward to seeing which dishes made the cut and will be added to China Rose’s new menu. China Rose is open each day from 5.30-11pm. Booking is essential and the restaurant operates a smart dress code. Further information regarding China Rose can be found at www.chinarose.co.uk.

Tickhill & District Lions Club have helped children from Estfeld Primary School to reach for the stars with a near-space balloon launch. The project was jointly designed by Lions Club members and parents of Estfeld School to engage seven to 11-year-old pupils, and stimulate their interest in science, technology, engineering and maths. It began with a school assembly delivered by Lion Steve Radford, which incorporated a video message from ex-pupil Dr Christina Smith, who is now a member of the Mars Curiosity Rover team at York University, Canada. The necessary equipment was jointly funded by Tickhill & District Lions Club and Estfeld School’s Home School Association. At 7.30am on a cold, but clear morning, pupils, parents, teachers and Lions all watched the giant helium weather balloon begin its journey skywards from the school grounds. On board satellite trackers allowed the team to follow its progress in real time. At 8.53am, after climbing for 1 hour 23 minutes, the balloon reached its maximum altitude of 33,820 metres (21 miles), at which point the expanding helium caused it to burst. The payload then safely descended to Earth by parachute, landing in a farmer’s field near Sleaford. In total, the balloon travelled over 50 miles from its launch site, experiencing temperatures as low as -50ºC, with the on board camera capturing amazing views throughout. A video of the balloon flight can be seen on Tickhill & District Lions website at www.tickhilllions.com.

SOFT SPOT FOR NOSTALGIA Another successful ‘Meet the Artist’ event was held at Limited 2 Art Bawtry with Bradford artist Danny Abrahams who was exhibiting his latest collection of oil paintings, including a number of exhibition exclusives. Danny’s journey is incredible as he only started painting when he was 32 and within eight years is now renowned as one of the UK’s best-selling artists. As a true Debbie & Darren Bell pictured with gallery Yorkshireman, Danny is influenced by the owner Ruth Worsman and Danny Abrahams after having bought ‘Fly High’ in celebration of local beauty of the northern landscape and their wedding anniversary has been inspired by his many travels during his previous career. Combining these images with memories of ‘growing up’ his paintings appeal to everyone with a soft spot for nostalgia. Now showing at the gallery is the Rock & Roll Icons Exhibition, running until 4 June 2017. Limited 2 Art, 17 Market Place, Bawtry, Doncaster DN10 6JL. Tel: 01302 711189

Whilst on a holiday in Ibiza in 2014, two brothers from Doncaster decided to put their entrepreneurial skills to the test. This resulted in them leaving their corporate jobs in London and launching a new competitively-priced menswear beachwear brand, bringing quality, well-designed swimwear for the most discerning, style-conscious men. Bowler & Beach, created by Matt and BJ Hepworth, generated part of their funding through the Kickstarter programme which supports bringing business ideas to fruition. Following the launch of their first collection two years later, they approached old school friend, James Jones, marketing director at award-winning premier fashion boutique Robinsons of Bawtry, to be their first northern stockist. “This is a fantastic concept and the high quality of the brand enables it to sit comfortably with established boutique menswear brands such as Boss and Ralph Lauren,” said James. “We wish them every success and are proud to support them in their business objectives.” Bowler & Beach takes light-hearted British designs and adds a touch of Portuguese flair, creating vibrant swim shorts that stand out on the beach for all the right reasons. The eye-catching prints including lobster, seahorse, swallow, elephant, stag and octopus give the stylish and comfortable Animal collection a real edge for ultimate poolside posing from the shores of Santorini to the beaches of the Bahamas. The Animal collection is now available at Robinsons of Bawtry in sizes S to XL. Robinsons is located at 2 South Parade, Bawtry, Doncaster, DN10 6JH. It’s all in the planning If you’re dreaming of a summer wedding, don’t miss The Crown Hotel’s upcoming open evening, the perfect inspiration for brides and grooms-to-be.

I

t’s the most popular time of year to tie the knot – summer weddings have great weather, fabulous flowers, and long evenings – and The Crown Hotel are delighted to kick off the season in style by welcoming newly engaged couples to their wedding opening evening on 22 June. On arrival, guests will be treated to a glass of Prosecco and a selection of canapes, before discussing the details of their big day with the Crown’s dedicated wedding co-ordinator. White Rose Occasions will decorate the Hogarth (laid for a wedding breakfast) and Leger (laid for a civil ceremony) suites in a beautiful seasonal theme, with white, creams and florals in abundance. Coupled with

The Bridal Suite

gorgeous ceiling drapes, twinkle lights and stunning table decorations, the rooms will be transformed into wedding wonderlands. Also on hand will be head chef Caz, who has been serving up delicious food from the Crown kitchen for more than 30 years. Not only will she able to discuss the finer details of each menu option, but new wedding breakfast dishes, including half melon filled with fresh berries, prosecco sorbet and fresh mint, and whipped goats cheese, beetroot, orange and balsamic salad, will be exhibited in the latest Crown wedding brochure, each cooked and displayed exactly as they would be on the day, so guests can envisage exactly how their wedding breakfast will be presented. To highlight every element of the Crown’s unique appeal, each couple will also enjoyed a personal tour of the hotel, including the beautiful secret landscaped garden, The Secret Garden sumptuous bedrooms,

The Vanilla Rooms hair salon and Elizabeth Ann Therapies – where couples can chat through the luxury wedding hair and beauty packages on offer. In addition to White Rose Occasions, many of the Crown’s recommended wedding suppliers will also be in attendance, including Celebrations of Bawtry, Jessica Mary Brett and Classic and Contemporary Cake Company. With so much to entice and enthral, it’s little wonder the hotel are already taking bookings for 2020 – though there are still dates available if you’re hoping to walk down the aisle sooner. There’s no need to book, just turn up between 5-9pm to see how the Crown can make your day truly magical. If you can’t make this month’s wedding open day but have been tempted to enquire, the events team would love to hear from you. They’re available to show you round, discuss your ideas and answer any questions from 9am to 9pm Monday to Friday and 9am to 5pm Saturday and Sunday. In the meantime, like them on Facebook for the latest news and announcements, and some brilliant wedding inspiration for brides and grooms-to-be. www.visitbawtry.com | 25

Meat feast

Carnivore’s are well catered for at Coleman’s steakhouse – but it’s not all about the meat, writes Rachel Martin.

S

ince it opened, Coleman’s Steakhouse has become one of the jewels in the crown of Bawtry’s restaurant scene. It has a reputation of serving up some of the town’s finest food and I could say it’s a wellkept secret, but word of mouth, coupled with almost instant rave reviews, meant there was no possibility of Coleman’s ever being a hidden gem. The food is locally sourced where possible, drinks come courtesy of the adjoining Bawtrys Bar, and you may be forgiven for thinking you’ve just walked into someone’s – fabulously decorated – beach shack that has a major penchant for banquetstyle tables and oversized tropical plants. Above anything, the meat is taken seriously here. It’s hung for a minimum of 30 days – this keeps the texture and, most importantly, the flavour – but that’s not the end of the line; it is finished off by cooking it in an open kitchen, the aroma of which pleasantly fills the restaurant. To kick-start our meat feast I ordered a large glass of Los Pastos Chardonnay (£5.75), which was smooth and satisfying with ripe peach and pineapple flavours and arrived with 28 | www.visitbawtry.com

a splash of tonic and a jingle of ice. My starter of breaded goats cheese (£6.50) was silky smooth and well-seasoned, the satisfying crisp coating with melting centre paired handsomely with full-flavoured chilli jam, whilst the tang of my partner’s sticky cola bbq rib fingers (£7) shone brightly thanks to the unmistakable taste and scent of aromatic kola nut. For mains, I opted for the rack of ribs (half rack £13.95), home-cooked with secret spices and served with cola bbq sauce, chips, coleslaw and salad. The ribs are listed as “giant” – they aren’t joking. These are proper, thick-cut numbers, with the tinge of pink all the way through that you only get from long contact with smoke. They are tender, but not so that they fall away from the bone, and they are properly sauced – a plate of these is a sixnapkin job at least. Taking a surprising but delightful Italian twist, my partner’s meat, meat and more meat pizza (£13.95) came topped with chorizo, pepperoni, Cajun chicken, pancetta, fillet steak, red onion and chilli and boasted a blistered crust as pillowy as marshmallow, with a gorgeous, supple chew.

Sad to say goodbye to my final bite, we perused the pudding menu and, both chocolate fans, we threw ourselves into joint owner Sarah Coleman’s homemade chocolate brownie stack (£4.50) – the perfect blend of sweetness, oozing with sauce and accompanied by a dreamy scoop of gin fizz sorbet. Coleman’s is not big on vegetarian food, with a seriously meat-focused menu split into steaks, gourmet burgers, starters, pizzas and sides, making it a less formal take on eating out and very sharer friendly. But veggies are not totally forgotten – there’s a halloumi burger; goats cheese and spinach, margarita and halloumi pizza; garlic breads and homemade nachos to choose from. Would we go back? Definitely. Coleman’s Steakhouse is an undisputed carnivore’s paradise. Plus you get so many accompaniments, there won’t be any grumbling tummies on the car journey home. Gym owner – and Mounted Games enthusiast – Will Robinson’s community-based approach to fitness has earned him the deserved title of ‘Retailer of the Month’.

W

ith so many big-name gyms around, it’s sometimes difficult to find one that offers a more personalised service. However, Bawtry Gym owned by personal trainer Will Robinson manages to do just that. “We’re a nice community gym, everyone is always greeted with a smile and by their first name so it’s a lot more personal,” says Will. There’s a fully-equipped gym with a range of cardiovascular and resistance machines, free weights, kettle bells, Olympic bars and weights. All members are given a made-to-follow workout programme. Will, who took over Bawtry Gym three years ago, also offers a personal training service for members. His professional rugby and sports coaching background means he can offer clients a tailored exercise regime incorporating both a military and rugby based style, which is focused around strength and fitness phases along with circuits. “You do what you know best – from being a youngster all my training has been sport specific. I’ve always known strength and conditioning because of my background which is why I use it in my personal training.” Outside of the gym, Will regularly takes part in the Mounted Games, both European and international and has this year been selected to play for England in the Royal Welsh Show. “A lot of people describe the games as

sports day on horseback mixed in with stunt riding. You’ve got to have good hand-eye coordination and great fitness levels as you’ll be jumping on and off the horse.” The Mounted Games involves eight teams of five competing in a relay-like race in an arena at the same time. At the end of three sessions, each individual team’s points are added up, then teams will be entered into the finals dependent on those scores. “I became involved in the games when I was nine after riding for a neighbour, and

because I was naturally sporty, I just took to it,” The games are split into the Mounted Games Association of Great Britain (MGAGB) and the International Mounted Games Association (IMGA). Throughout the summer he’ll not only be competing for England at the Royal Welsh Show 24-25 July with the IMGA, but be playing for the county of South Staffordshire under the MGAGB across the country. Will has played internationally numerous times including 2007 as European Champions, 2009 as reserve champions, 2010 in Denmark with England as World team champions amongst many others. “My most memorable win was the World Championships in 2011, closely followed by coming third at both the European and World individuals in 2010.” The Mounted Games are the fourth largest discipline for members signed in the horse sporting community. “We are trying to turn the games more professional as they’re becoming bigger and more popular. We’re trying to progress it and eventually we’d like to get it into the Olympics,” says Will. Bawtry Gym Church Walk, Bawtry, DN10 6JD Tel: 01302 711152 www.bawtrygym.co.uk Open seven days.

windows, making them feel light and airy. The Herbal Laconium uses steam infused with herbs from the herb garden and is clad in ancient timbers from the uplands of southern Germany. Next is the Stonebath® – one of only three in the UK – which features a heated oven and cold water cauldron, creating a theatrical outpour of hydrating steam when the mineral stones are lifted from the oven into the water. Steam bath

This is followed by a traditional Alpine Sauna, which is clad in Swiss Stone Pine and has a distinct aroma. With great healing and sleep aid properties, it’s a firm spa favourite, and a great contrast to the colder experiences on offer. Guests are transported to the mountains of Europe with the custom-made snowstorm experience. The first of its kind in the world, it features a scene of the imposing Matterhorn. Guests can select from a gentle snow shower or a more powerful snowstorm and the experience is further amplified with the effects of lightning and gusts of wind. The hot and cold shower walk includes a sequence of five showers, which feature different ambient lighting and sound. These start with warm, tropical rain, transitioning to cold, alpine rain, followed by a warm summer storm and cold mist, and ending with a cold bucket shower – for those brave enough. Additional experiences include a beautifully designed Steambath with individually crafted

mosaic tiles and a silent Salt Inhalation Room which hosts a living salt wall which will continue to evolve and grow as the salt crystals form. Last but not least is the glamorous glittering footbath where guests can chose to immerse their feet in hot or cold water and bubbles. The heated indoor-outdoor vitality pool is at the heart of the spa, featuring bubble loungers, massage jet stations and reflexology station and there is a floor-to-ceiling glass sliding window, leading to the outside part of the pool. Lunchtime dining is available at The Herb Garden Brasserie, headed up by AA Rosette winning chef Richard Allen, which features an open plan kitchen and dishes that include starters such as beetroot salmon gravadlax, vanilla cream and radish salad; mains of roast Guinea fowl with merguez sausage, broad beans, asparagus and pan reduction; pan-fried seabass, king prawns, ginger, crab bisque and chorizo crisp and desserts including pineapple, Thai basil and ginger sorbet. The brasserie also leads onto the aromatic herb garden, where guests can dine alfresco. The first floor hosts six treatment rooms, two of which are doubles and two are paid experiences. In addition to this, the Express Beauty Lounge and Hair Boutique for bridal and express treatments is situated here with a feature panel of Roberto Cavalli wallpaper designed with 6,000 crystals. Guests can also be transported to the French Rivera in the Sabbia Med® (sunlight therapy) where the vista of St Tropez is painted on the walls and warm sun-drenched sand is on the floor. treatment replicates the benefits of the sun without the harmful rays and helps those with Vitamin D deficiency or SAD (seasonal affective disorder). The Turkish inspired Rasul® features the ritual of mud cleansing for the whole body, or foam for an unusual twist – a great experience for individuals or groups of up to four. The menu of treatments, using Germaine de Cappucini products, features facials, massages, wraps, exfoliation, anti-ageing, manicures and pedicures. Highlights include

body treatments such as the Sperience Elements Aroma Massage, which is based on traditional Chinese philosophy and combines five elements of wood, fire, earth, metal and water, and facials including the Time Expert SRNS anti-ageing, which provides immediate results, with skin being visibly more lifted and toned. In addition, there are signature treatments designed for the spa, including the Lady Jane Priceless Gem, a 120-minute face and body treatment using extracts of precious gems. There are also two post treatment relaxation rooms, one with a balcony and views over, the other covered in darkness for those who want to sleep. Spa Director, Sadie Ardron-Levack, said: “We are delighted our spa is now open and we cannot wait for our guests to visit and start enjoying all our experiences. Burnham Threads

The Only Clinic in the North of England to offer this pioneering treatment performed by the Master of Aesthetics

Why have surgery at £10’s of thousands when PDO Threads cost around £600. COG threads are totally safe and achieve great results with virtually no pain in around 1 hour! WHAT CAN COG THREADS DO FOR ME? COG Threads will re-define the contours of the face by lifting and lightening sagging skin, they will reduce roundness, enhance the skin’s tone and lighten pores. They are excellent used on mouth to nose lines, lower cheeks, jawline and a sagging mouth! The lifting effects can last up to 18 months.

WHAT HAPPENS DURING THE TREATMENT? Local anaesthetic is injected into the treatment area. The thread will then be introduced using a cannula or micro needle in the required area. The procedure takes about 45-60 minutes depending on the treatment you will require.

IN BRIEF

Annual charity ball tackles cancer head on

Over the last four years, Equinox Ball has raised £70,000 for Firefly, a Doncaster charity which transports cancer patients to their appointments, with the same amount being donated to Cancer Research UK. The event was set up by Sarah and Paul Mullen, who lost both of Paul’s parents to cancer within weeks of each other. Local businesses and people are being asked to donate prizes for the raffle and

auction, which forms part of this year’s ball on 30 September at Doncaster Deaf Trust. The money raised will help tackle cancer on a local and national level. This year’s event will adopt a magical Alice in Wonderland theme with entertainment by Chris Madin and his Strictly band. Adam O’Neil and JoJo Kelly from Capital FM’s Breakfast Show will host the event and there will be a few surprises during the evening. Last year, everything from Champagne to a holiday in Las Vegas was donated and sevenyear-old Daisy Watt’s original painting raised over £9,000. To pledge a prize, contact Sarah Mullen at equinoxball@gmail.com or visit the Facebook page, www.facebook.com/Equinox-Ballsupporting-Firefly-and-Cancer-Research258834674298241. Further information can be found at www.equinoxball.co.uk/home.

The Separatist celebrates its first anniversary The Separatist Inn at Torworth, beside the Great North Road between Retford and Bawtry, has recently celebrated its first year operating as a restaurant. The inn and boutique hotel is named after the separatist movement that led to the Mayflower Pilgrims sailing to establish a colony in the New World in 1620. The restaurant is light and airy with a high emphasis on quality and with minimalist lines to reflect the minimalism of the pilgrims themselves. The Separatist has received local and national acclaim, winning the Pub Restaurant of the Year at the Eastside Restaurant Awards 2016, an AA Four Star Silver rating for its boutique hotel rooms and a Dinner Award for its modern British dishes. This year, The Separatist is focusing further on its food offering to bring something

exceptional to the local area. Head chef, Billy Frost, who finished his training at The Ritz in London, has developed a new menu to bring rosette-standard cuisine to the area along similar lines to its sister venue, Caviars in Bawtry. The new menu, includes pan-seared king scallops with a ham knuckle compression and sweet potato purée, and starter and main selections include a plate of pork with belly pork, Parma ham tenderloin and braised cheek with apple puree with a mini toffee apple. Caviars has also been restyled to match The Separatist. New dark wood tables give a more modern appearance and the restaurant is headed by a new front of house manager. To find out more about The Separatist, visit www.theseparatistinn.com and for more about Caviars, visit www.caviarsofbawtry.com.

Meet Doncaster diet guru Terri-Ann Nunns Doncaster-born Terri-Ann Nunns created a diet in 2011 to enable her to lose weight and has since become an internet sensation with over three million followers across social media. Terri-Ann Nunns held the first Meet & Greet of her UK tour in Birmingham last weekend and will follow this with a Meet & Greet at Warmsworth Hall in Doncaster on 9 July from 12.30pm to 5.30pm (pre-registration required). Everyone that attended received a free goodie bag worth over £20 for showing their support and after the event, Terri-Ann sat with each person chatting about their weight loss story and goals. Terri-Ann created the plan after gaining

seven stone from a twin pregnancy. She found other high street diets too expensive, so initially created a diet that suited her requirements – one that was easy to follow, allowed plenty of variety of food and would deliver results even without exercise. Losing 10lb in ten days gave her the boost she needed and she has since gone on to lose all her weight plus a little more. Terri-Ann Nunns has over 70,000 active members on her plan and has a social media audience of over three million. She is married to Michael Nunns who runs a protein and supplement business. Terri-Ann’s 123 Diet Plan is available at www.terriann123dietplan.co.uk and is £19.99. Eastside | www.eastsidemag.co.uk 85

CHARITY CYCLE RIDE SMASHES FUNDRAISING TARGET. he Tour De Yorkshire ProAm Cycle Ride, which saw almost 100 riders tackle two courses across Yorkshire just before this year’s Tour de Yorkshire, has smashed its fundraising target. Over £12,000 has been raised so far, with sponsorship monies still being pledged, for the two charities – Cancer Research UK and Doncaster’s Firefly Charity – as part of the Doncaster based Equinox charity which has raised over £150,000 so far for the two worthy causes. “We are filled with admiration for all the cyclists that put so much effort and gave up so much time to support this fantastic bike ride and raise such a staggering amount of money for our charities,” said Sarah White, co-organiser. “Warmest thanks go also to those that enjoyed the spring sunshine at our family fun day too and welcome our riders home – the spirit and camaraderie amongst them all was fantastic.”

T

The event was sponsored and supported by Doncaster College & University Centre, China Rose Bawtry, Yorkshire Caravans, Hayselden Skoda, Swift Caravans, And She Knows, Bawtry Eye Academy, L & P Mullen Builders, DCLT, Caravan Guard, Doncaster Knights, Ski Olympic, Dwight Morrey Wealth Management Ltd, Harbon Electrical, NES, Newey & Eyre, St Hughes Hospital, Doncaster Rovers, Bicycle Buddy, Crozier Jones Emergency Response and Solutions 4 Cleaning.

The cycle rides saw a group of professional and skilled cyclists tackle some of the most difficult terrain in the county, including Holme Moss and a climb of 11,000 feet during the 110-mile ride, whilst a group of novices and experienced cyclists tackled a 54mile route. “Everyone had such a fantastic time that plans are already underway to make 2018 even bigger and better,” said Emily Harbon, co-organiser. “We will announce the date just as soon as it has been planned and we hope to double our riders next year. Please spread the word with fellow cyclists so that we can achieve great things next year for our two charities.” Information regarding the ride and details for next year will be posted at www.facebook.com/DoncasterTdYProAmRi de. For sponsorship packages for the 2017 Equinox Ball, contact Sarah Mullen at equinoxball@gmail.com.

EATING OUT

A feast of flavours RACHEL MARTIN DISCOVERS CLEVER COOKING AT CADEBY’S BEST-KEPT SECRET. estaurants, like Marmite and so many other things in life, can divide people into two camps – those who love them and those who hate them. Not so at The Cadeby Pub and Restaurant, located in the spectacular countryside around Cadeby, which divides people into two different camps altogether – those who are regulars and those who have never heard of it. Until recently, I fell into the latter division and, on discovering the 18th-century pub has been a staple feature of the Cadeby dining ‘scene’ since 1751, I was sure everyone would know about it,but apparently not. Then again, it’s possible that I don’t have to introduce the Cadeby all, as, judging by a packed Friday night, just about every customer is a regular. As we walked in, we were taken aback by the uber stylish interior. From the outside the large farmhouse-style building is quite understated, but set foot inside and you’re immediately transported into a haven of chic and stylish serenity, which has been restored to respect all the building’s rustic features. The etiquette here is to stay at the bar until your meal is almost ready, so it's worth ordering a drink to enjoy while you wait. The other half and I were treated to a large, citrusy glass of Durbanville Hills chardonnay (£5.90) while wading through the menu, and, true to form, this particular evening seemed

R

heavily populated with diners who knew everyone by name. For a moment, it felt like we'd gate-crashed a family gathering, but we were quickly accepted into the fold and even treated to a generous snifter of Brittains raspberry vodka (soon to appear on the Cadeby’s spirit menu) by husband-and-wife team John and Fiona Raper. The menu features classic combinations with one or two unusual pairings and we began with the spinach and sweet potato samosa (£7.50) and blow-torch mackerel (£8.50). The mackerel, with its scorched, crisp skin, was fresh and delicious, alongside a garnish of cucumber carpaccio, cucumber salsa and fennel jelly. The samosas, I’m told (note to self: from now on bring a more generous guest to dinner) were light as air wrapped up in a flaky, perfectly fried pouch. For mains, I couldn’t resist the pan-fried stone bass, king scallop, truffled cauliflower puree, sautéed potatoes and endive (£17). It was a wonderful, meaty fish; the king scallop bounced with freshness and the purée was rich and custardy. A great double experience – one luxurious, the other incendiary. The other half had his eye on the chorizo, ricotta, red chilli, tomato and mozzarella pizza (£10.50), and later claimed it was the best he’d had; crisp, savoury bread matched well with rich meats and cheeses. The orange and apricot crumble (£6.75)

however, trumped it in my eyes. Soft, chewy and crunchy in all the right places; firm fruit came topped with a crumbly lid, making a crunchy foil to the sea of vanilla anglaise. My partner chose the chocolate brownie (£7) with candied blood orange, and blood orange sorbet, which was cleverly constructed - the taste almost topped by beautiful presentation a mad explosion of flavours and a final burst of fireworks in a meal which came humming and fizzing with invention, pulling off every flavour experiment it tried. The Cadeby Pub and Restaurant really has put this hamlet on the map of fine dining the food clever without showing off, combining interesting flavours and textures that just work - and I doubt it's going to stay hidden for much longer. “I’m Chintana, most people know me as Ton. I grew up in a village not far from the city of Ratchuburi in Thailand. I started cooking at a young age and used to cook for all my family. Mai Dang was my first restaurant I opened when I was 18 years old. Six Years later, I met my husband and we decided to start a family in Doncaster. Then this gave me the opportunity to open the first Thai Restaurant in Doncaster, The Bangkok Thai Restaurant. Ten years of running a successful business, we wanted to expand and we decided to open the Bangkok Royal Elephant. A break with tradition at The Oddfellows HANNAH SANDERS DISCOVERS A PUB WITH A DIFFERENCE. he Odddfellows pub in the heart of Carlton dares to be different. With its under-lit stone bar, refurbished wooden tables and walls full of prints and photographs it might not be anyone’s idea of a traditional pub, but it does make an ideal spot for a relaxing evening meal. The newly refurbished eatery demands attention before you even walk through the doors. Its plain white exterior is brought to life by a towering black sign and bright orange logo of glasses, moustache and a bowtie. From a large pool table, darts board and TV, along with quieter seated areas for diners and beer garden complete with a stone pizza oven and BBQ, it caters for most tastes. Arriving on a sunny evening, we found this spacious, brightly-lit pub filled with chatter and tempting aromas. We were greeted and seated in a private booth with leather seats, which was perfect for relaxing – after much deliberation - with a glass of Merlot (£4.25) while my

T

designated driving partner went for a large Coke £3.00). For starter I opted for the salt and pepper squid (£6), which came topped with fresh herbs and a homemade chilli jam. The squid was delightfully crisp and the jam provided the dish with some subtle heat. My partner went for the BBQ spare ribs (£5.50) from the specials board, which melted in the mouth and were glazed perfectly in a sweet, tangy bbq sauce. For mains I chose the homemade pie of the day (£8.95), which was steak. The meat, was tender, smothered in a rich, thick gravy and topped with a puff pastry lid. It came served with a generous portion of seasonal vegetables and home-cut chips. My partner opted for the Odddfellows burger (£10.95). It was packed full of their own mixture of beef and pork mince and came topped with crispy bacon, smothered in cheese and served on a lightly toasted brioche bun. It came paired with home-cut chips and a side of pickles.

The homemade desserts were irresistible. I had the lemon meringue tart (£4.50) with a single espresso (£2). The pudding was topped with a fluffy, beautifully cooked meringue that was complemented by the tartness of the lemon and rested on a bed of raspberry puree. My partner chose the warm chocolate brownie (£4.50), which was rich, moist, delightfully gooey and topped with a large scoop of vanilla ice cream- the perfect ending to our evening meal. CAST YOUR VOTE ive years ago we decided to test the water and see if there was an appetite in the Eastside region for a restaurant awards night. Well, we know the answer to that one. Our first event was a huge success and the Eastside Restaurant Awards have gone from strength to strength, getting bigger and better every year. Now the race is on to find the winners in the Eastside Restaurant Awards for 2017, and with an exciting new venue booked for this year’s event it looks like being the biggest and best yet. On the evening of Monday 9 October, Doncaster Racecourse, home of the St Leger Festival and the venue over the decades for many a classic sporting contest, will host our annual celebration of the region’s culinary superstars. This glamorous black tie event has quickly become established as one of the big nights of the year in the social calendar; it also offers a huge boost to the local restaurant scene, as the winners enjoy their moment of triumph and all the nominated restaurants bask in the glow of positive publicity. Our previous venue was The Crown Hotel in

Bawtry, and owner Craig Dowie and the team did a fabulous job in helping to put the Eastside Restaurant Awards on the map. Moving to Doncaster Racecourse, past masters at catering on the largest scales, ensures that we can extend our invitation beyond the local restaurant scene to include the general public. In fact, it’s the perfect opportunity for the Eastside region’s food fanatics and socialites (all you would-be Paris Hiltons!) to see and be seen. The room will be dressed by White Rose Occasions of Doncaster, which has spent the last decade helping people plan their celebrations and transforming venues of all shapes and sizes into spectacular settings for big events. There will also be a charity raffle to add to the total funds raised by the Equinox Ball, which will be staged on 30 September at Doncaster Deaf Trust College on behalf of Firefly Cancer Research. Eastside’s reviewers are out and about now, checking out established and new restaurants, seeking out the very best the region has to offer. All our recent award winners have been exceptional, so expectations are high.

The Eastside Readers’ Choice trophy is highly prized. Whether you select your favourite local cafe, a much-loved Indian or Italian restaurant or any other type of food venue, all votes are equal. Everyone who casts a vote will be entered into a draw, and one lucky winner will receive dinner for two at their favourite restaurant. Voting is free: simply go online to www.rmcmedia.co.uk/events/awards/ eastside to let us know where you have enjoyed eating out most over the last 12 months. All entries must include a home address and contact details, any multiple entries from the same email address will be disqualified.

Get involved All restaurants taking part in the Eastside Restaurant Awards benefit from the publicity as we shine a spotlight on the region’s finest dining establishments, from ultra-modern contemporary bistros to cosy cafes, and everything in between. This year’s event promises to be the biggest yet and here’s a reminder to all restaurant, hotel, café and pub owners who have not yet taken the plunge... there is still time! To make sure your establishment is under consideration for the big prizes in 2017, contact Eastside’s publishing manager Terri Moore at terri.moore@rmcmedia.co.uk
