Downsize or upsize? How to right-size your home UPSIZING OR DOWNSIZING ISN’T AS SIMPLE AS IT SOUNDS. FROM INCREASING YOUR MORTGAGE TO TRYING TO SELL YOUR HOME, THERE ARE MANY FACTORS TO BE TAKEN INTO CONSIDERATION BEFORE YOU MAKE A CHANGE. JO DYSON DISCUSSES WHAT TO CONSIDER WHEN YOU WANT TO RIGHT-SIZE YOUR PROPERTY.

Upsizing

Moving into a new, larger home has many benefits. A larger space enables you to give your burgeoning family the space to grow both physically and socially. Aside from impacting your own social life, spare rooms can be rented out to guests occasionally via a service such as AirBnB, or even on a more permanent basis to a lodger under the rent a room scheme. The additional space may also prove useful if you work from home; having a dedicated room for work can enable you to start a business from home that you didn’t have space for before or develop a business to save start-up capital before acquiring a commercial space. Upsizing can also have tangible financial benefits in the long run. In a healthy property climate, a home’s value 12 Eastside | www.eastsidemag.co.uk

may appreciate over time resulting in considerable revenue if you sell and any windfall from this sale can help to free you from your mortgage later and add more to your assets. Upsizing may be a goal but it’s also essential to consider the practicalities. An increased mortgage is a given; but your utility bills, council tax, and maintenance bills will also be higher. General upkeep of a more spacious property will also be a larger task; from gardening to cleaning, it will all take more time and resource. If you’ve upsized to make room for a growing family, you may feel the need to downsize when adult children fly the nest. Additionally, increasing the value of your property doesn’t necessarily ensure that when it’s time to sell, your selling price will increase. It’s wise to make sure that any money you put in will pay back in the long term.

PROPERTY

Downsizing

Downsizing can relieve the financial burden of a larger home while opening you up to new opportunities. While larger properties require more upkeep, from housekeeping to maintenance, downsizing your home can be the first step to releasing some equity. Reducing time spent on household tasks will allow more time for leisure activities, spending time with your family, and loving your home more than loathing it. Additionally, smaller properties create a domain which requires more structure and co-ordination, enabling you to strengthen family ties. Downsizing your home can encourage more simple way of living, where you have to be disciplined with what you really need, it will certainly encourage a good declutter. Downsizing might be more practical, but it’s also crucial to assess the impact of less space on your everyday life. You might be freeing up money, but what will you be sacrificing? If you decide against a spare bedroom or office space, what about the garden space? When you are considering downsizing, the reasons behind your

transition should influence your decisions about your new property. For this reason, careful thought should be given to what you want from a smaller home.

Feng shui your home APPLY THE PRINCIPLES OF HAPPINESS AND HARMONY INTO YOUR DÉCOR. omes should be places we love, where we enjoy waking up and coming back home to and if you want to breathe more life into your living space by creating a happy, healthy and welcoming environment, then there’s no better place to start than with the theory of feng shui. Its principles maintain that we live in harmony with our environment and its main aim is to achieve balance in your living and working space and maximise your potential for success in all areas of your life. So, how can we apply this philosophy to our home for 2020 and beyond? We’ve compiled a few ideas that will kickstart your journey to a happier and healthier home.

H

Invite wealth into your home In feng shui, your front door represents how energy enters your home and your life. So, naturally it is first place to start when you want to create good feng shui. To draw chi energy to your front door place plants and lights either side and use a mirror to visually enlarge the foyer space but position it so that it doesn’t directly face the door. Evergreens are ideal foliage and shrubs which stay green and have a good bulk all year round are key, so try box or yew, hebes or sarcococcas. Pictured: Garden Trading 40cm planter gardentrading.co.uk

Bring harmony to your kitchen The hall represents opportunities, therefore ensure it is kept clutter-free so that the ‘energy’ can circulate. Place coats and shoes inside a closed cupboard so they don’t stagnate and to activate that all important chi energy, position a mirror and fresh flowers to instantly uplift the vitality of the space.

The kitchen is a vital space as its energy represents nourishment and relationship harmony. Ensure that you don’t place the sink and cooker opposite each other, as that can lead to arguments between couples by creating a ‘water and fire crash’. Avoid too much black and red, as that too causes water and fire to collide. Focus on strong Earth element décor such as fresh whites, clean greys and warm nude tones.

HOME & GARDEN

Spruce up your interior decor

Nourish your dining space

In feng shui, plants embody life energy. What does that mean? Well, living green house plants connect us to nature and bring vibrancy into our homes. They’re like fresh pressed organic green juice for our homes. Think freshness, health and vitality. The most important thing to remember is to find plants that you can care for and are appropriate for the space. For example, take your lighting conditions into consideration. If you’re new to plants, try some easy ones like aloe and succulents.

The dining room and table are an important consideration in feng shui as they provide a space where you can concentrate mindfully on what you are eating. In feng shui the dining space is considered to relate with the spleen, that in turn relates to the element Earth, which in traditional Chinese medicine is concerned with digestion. To optimise the energy in this space, place a mirror on the wall to reflect the dining area and fresh flowers on the table.

Pictured: Botanical Bathroom featuring assorted indoor plants from Dobbies dobbies.com

Pictured: TRELLIS and MIMA Shelving by John Eadon johneadon.co.uk

Encourage a restful sleep

Let chi flow freely

To ensure your bedroom is as balanced as possible, choose a light neutral colour and invest in a king or super-king size bed and mattress. The bed must have a headboard and be positioned centrally against a solid wall and ideally must not be in line with the bedroom door. Place bedside tables either side of the bed to provide support and top with curvy lamps and lightly fragranced candles to introduce some romantic energy.

The front garden represents your future, so ensure it is always kept beautiful with an array of flowers and plants and always keep it tidy so that the chi-energy is able to flow freely. The back garden represents both health and wealth for the occupants, so ensure it is always kept in good condition. The boundaries, fences and walls must always be well maintained to provide support to the occupants and a bird bath or water feature can add both sound and wildlife to your outdoor space.

Helping parents SEEKING TO CONNECT WITH LOCAL MUMS, CAROLINE BROOKS STARTED DONCASTER MUMBLER. THE WEBSITE HAS NOW GROWN INTO A THRIVING PARENTING COMMUNITY, WRITES RACHEL MARTIN. ver 90 per cent of parents report feeling isolated after the birth of their child, which is what led Doncaster mum Caroline Brooks to make finding a support network, both online and offline, a reality for every family. Doncaster Mumbler was launched in 2018 and helps to alleviate loneliness as well as answer the different questions that come up daily when parents are faced with a brand-new lifestyle. What started out of a passion to connect and meet like-minded families has grown into a thriving parenting community and is now a way to find reassurance and advice, as well as local playgroups and classes, antenatal guidance and details of meet ups and activities. Not to mention the annual Mumbler award ceremony – a glittering celebration of the very best local family friendly businesses. Eastside spoke to the founder of Doncaster Mumbler, mum of two Caroline Brooks, to find out what inspired her to launch the site and how it helps parents across the region.

O

Mumbler award winners 2019

What is Doncaster Mumbler?

Doncaster Mumbler is a local parenting website designed to make life for families in our area a little bit easier, as well as providing a platform for local family friendly businesses to advertise. It is a hub of information, from days out, places to eat and ante-natal information, to childcare, weekly classes and playgroups, plus everything going on during the school holidays – all in one place. We also host a Facebook group where local parents can share recommendations about everything from birthday parties to the most magical places to meet Santa, as well as parenting support. There is a lot going on for families in Doncaster but prior to Doncaster Mumbler there wasn’t a platform to pull all of that information together. Time is precious, especially when you have children and keeping track of events and activities on social media is time consuming and frustrating. Mumbler makes it easy for parents to find trustworthy advice and information. If someone within the group makes a recommendation, like a great family walk or childminder, I will display that information on the website and help to spread the word. If a new parent is interested in joining the group, they can expect to receive a supportive and helpful welcome. What was the inspiration behind Doncaster Mumbler?

Being at home with small children can be isolating. In my own experience, I relied on playgroups and classes – we went to everything. I wanted to provide a platform that would bring the parents of Doncaster together and I like to think that Doncaster Mumbler helps other parents feel less alone. Never underestimate the power of a cup of tea, a chat and the knowledge that your little one has played and interacted with others and most importantly, is worn out. Besides all of the above, I was desperate to find a better work and home-life balance. 24 Eastside | www.eastsidemag.co.uk

What inspired you to launch the Doncaster Mumbler Awards?

I decided very early on that I was going to replicate the wonderful awards held by Harrogate Mumbler. The first Doncaster Mumbler Awards were held in November 2019 and the evening was a huge success. Over 200 guests attended and we handed out awards in recognition of Mumblers’ favourite party provider, class or activity provider, and day nursery or preschool, to name only a few. The atmosphere was electric and I have to say it was quite an overwhelming evening. Trax FM co-hosted the celebrations and I’m so grateful to the local businesses who sponsored the event. How do you see Doncaster Mumbler developing in months to come?

By the end of 2019, 10,000 monthly users visited the website, so a big part of my time continues to be focused on making sure Doncaster Mumbler is up to date, accurate and trustworthy. The next few months will also see me expand the Mumbler team, which is exciting. The past year has seen me get involved in all sorts, from working with Doncaster Council and Delicious Doncaster to co-hosting the Big Latch On (a local celebration of breastfeeding in Doncaster) and I am excited for what the next 12 months hold.

How do you imagine your community growing?

Whilst the website provides opportunities for businesses to share what they do, there is a strict no business policy in the Facebook group, which enables the Mumbler parenting community to focus on discussions between members. Members then go on to invite friends and it’s great to see the platform growing day by day. I also work closely with Doncaster Health Visitors and organisations such as Light Peer Support to make sure that Mumblers’ are signposted to the right place should they require additional help or support. The Mumbler community as a whole continues to grow year on year and I’d love to see local Mumbler sites launch in Sheffield, Nottingham and other surrounding areas. If there are any mums out there looking for a change – I highly recommend it. Tell us what a perfect family day looks like to you.

We love the weekends. There’s no such thing as a ‘lie in’ (as anyone with kids knows) however it’s nice to be able to have breakfast in our PJs – usually pancakes. We then play a game or do some crafting or colouring and generally enjoy being together all four of us. If it’s nice, we’d go for a walk. We don’t have to go far to find some lovely countryside rambles, with Cusworth Hall, Sandall Park and Lakeside Lake on the doorstep. If it’s raining, we are big fans of the cinema or settling down with a family movie and popcorn. Our favourite way to finish the day is with a roast either at home or one of the great family-friendly pubs in the area. Lastly, anything exciting coming up for Doncaster Mumbler?

I’m pleased to say that the Doncaster Mumbler Awards 2020 will take place at the Hilton Garden Inn Doncaster Racecourse on 6 November. Planning is underway and I’m excited to see what our second year holds. We received so many lovely comments from all our nominees, finalists and winners and there was a real buzz before and after the event. The nominations for the awards are made by the public, as are the final votes. We received 18,500 votes last year and nominations for this year’s awards will open in July – watch this space and visit doncaster.mumbler.co.uk for more information.

BLOG love working online and the flexibility it offers, especially being able to work around my children. I am lucky to work at home and very appreciative of this. Having worked in corporate marketing for 15 years, I was initially offered the opportunity to work from home for a tech start-up, which taught me so much about online marketing and keeping things lean. Mumbler is a national franchise, with 20 live websites throughout the UK reaching 1.82 million parents across the country. Whilst I own and run Doncaster Mumbler solo, I have some great support in the other franchisees, who are all mums, running a Mumbler site in their hometowns. I came across some of the other sites – Harrogate Mumbler, York Mumbler, Hull Mumbler – and had a Eureka moment, where it felt like my ideal job was landing at my feet. There was nothing like it in Doncaster and I knew I could really make a difference. I built the website over the summer holidays and launched in September 2018. For me, besides connecting parents and providing a central hub of information, running Doncaster Mumbler is an opportunity to celebrate my home town and share some of the great things that are happening here, such as the new Central Library and Museum, the expansion of the Yorkshire Wildlife Park and even hosting the Rugby League World Cup in 2021. The spotlight is on Doncaster and I think it’s a great place to raise children.

Safety in aesthetics KL COSMETIC CLINIC PROVIDE ADVANCED COSMETIC MEDICAL TREATMENTS WHERE CLIENT SAFETY AND WELL-BEING IS PARAMOUNT. t is estimated that over 2.6 Billion people last year had injectable treatment in the UK alone. How many of those procedures were carried out safely is a number most probably much less. We know the number of people undergoing aesthetic treatment is rising, as are the amount of treatments carried out un-safely and unethically in the ever-growing world of aesthetics. At KL, as a team of highly experienced aesthetic nurses, we operate under a strict code of conduct which is in line with the NMC guidance, in order to ensure patient safety across all aspects of your aesthetic journey. Your safety is paramount to us from the first in-depth consultation where we discuss how you would like us to beautify or sculpt your face, brighten tighten or lift. But most importantly we would discuss and assess how we would do this safely and with minimal risks and possible complications. I’m sure we’ve all seen the ‘Kim and Kylie Packages’ at a seemingly unmissable price, however these ‘unmissable’ prices often come as a double-edged sword. More and more practitioners are using less than top quality and approved

I

products to give dramatic results for a lesser price. The treatments are only as good and as safe as the person treating you, as well as the product used. We strongly believe in using the world’s leading FDA approved products at KL, meaning it has been determined that the benefits of the product outweigh the known risks for its intended use. Despite years of experience and a string of medical qualifications behind us, we continue to develop and educate ourselves by attending industry masterclasses with leading expert aesthetic doctors in the UK and Europe. The most recent theme was complications management – you are never done learning within this ever growing field and can never be too prepared. Recognising and acting upon any signs of complications before, during and after treatment is vital – it is a medical procedure after all. For us your aesthetic journey doesn’t stop when you leave our clinic. Auxerre leads the way in the 2019 Lincoln Handicap at Doncaster Pictures by Andrew Kelly Photography

The flat is back! OFFICIALLY OPENING THE UK FLAT TURF SEASON, THE UNIBET LINCOLN RACEDAY SHOWCASES WORLD-CLASS RACING AT THE HEART OF DONCASTER ON TOWN MOOR. THE HIGHLIGHT OF THE RACE CARD IS THE UNIBET LINCOLN, A HERITAGE HANDICAP WORTH £100,000 IN PRIZE MONEY.

Why is the Raceday called the Lincoln? The UNIBET Lincoln has run at Doncaster since 1965 when it was transferred from the former Lincoln Racecourse. The race itself has run since 1849 and is a race rich in history. The Lincoln Handicap is in fact one half of the Spring Double with The Grand National held two weeks later. However, winning the double is no easy feat. In fact the only jockey to have ever won both legs was Dave Dick way back in 1956! 48 Eastside | www.eastsidemag.co.uk

Back to 2020, and will jockey James Doyle score a hat-trick, having won the race on the last two outings, first in 2018 on Adeybb and again in 2019 on Auxerre – he’s surely one to watch. And after a cold bleak winter with unfortunate abandonments the racecourse team is excited to welcome the flat back in style. Entertainment for the UNIBET Lincoln includes music from Brass Band ‘Flat Cap Brass’ and a live performance from Chasing Mumford, the official Mumford & Sons tribute.’ Grandstand Tickets are just £20 and flat caps are a must-wear item.

Of course, racing is free for U18s and the launch of Magical World of Racing on 29 March has all the markings of a fantastic family day out. On arrival visit Professor Dumblecaster (see what we did there) and his magical cap, children can then make their own wand and learn a spell or two, before Professor Pout inducts them into the Magical World of Racing. Take a turn on a FREE Unicorn Ride (even the ponies are joining in), but beware of the smoke breathing dragon, with his impressive 18ft wings who will be making appearances throughout the

day, as he hunts down his baby... yes that’s right two dragons! To top the day off, there’s all the fun of the fair, and an owl display by Wild Owls, and yes you heard it right, Doncaster’s first Shetland Unicorn Race! A family ticket to the Magical World of Racing is just £20. All wizards welcome! The annual Cheltenham Preview evening is also back on 4 March. Racing pundits and a National Hunt Trainer and jockey will be among the leading line-up that will be sharing tips ahead of the Cheltenham Festival. Priced at just £16 and including a pie and pea supper, prebooking is essential for this event. Sticking with Cheltenham and the racecourse have added an extra fixture to this year’s card – none other than the Cheltenham Chaser Raceday. A perfect opportunity to enjoy the action from Cheltenham but from the comfort of Doncaster. The Cheltenham Festival will

be shown on screens, in addition to seven exciting National Hunt Races at Doncaster. Finally; the recent announcements of Shed Seven and Supergrass gives plenty to look forward to as we look ahead to a summer of fantastic music, exciting racing and of course those all-important family days out at Doncaster Racecourse.

Last year’s double winners, Thai at the Sal

Join the elite THE VOTING FOR THE 2020 EASTSIDE RESTAURANT AWARDS IS NOW OPEN – AND THERE ARE MANY WAYS IN WHICH YOU CAN GET INVOLVED.

he search is on for the finest dining establishments across the Doncaster, Rotherham and North Notts region, as we launch the 2020 Eastside Restaurant Awards. Last year’s event was at The Hilton Garden Inn Doncaster Racecourse and the venue received widespread praise from the nominated restaurants, so we are delighted to be returning on the evening of Monday 5 October for what looks like being our biggest and best awards dinner yet. This glamorous black tie event is now firmly established as one of the big nights of the year in the social calendar; it also offers a huge boost to the local restaurant scene, as the winners enjoy their moment of triumph and all the nominated restaurants bask in the glow of positive publicity. The big winners of 2019 were Thai at the Sal who scooped two awards on the night – Best of Asia and the coveted Eastside Restaurant of the Year. Now the search is on again to find the venues that have truly excelled in the art of delivering delicious food in a superlative setting. All our recent award winners have been superb, so expectations are high.

Restaurants – How To Enter Book one of our Restaurant Awards package which includes a minimum of three quarter-page adverts. It also includes a full page review in the magazine and your entry to the restaurant awards. Stage 1: The restaurant review is written by one of our highly experienced feature writers, who will ring to arrange a convenient time to come and dine at your restaurant free of charge. They will take photographs, talk to the team and write about their experiences which we will then feature in Eastside as a full page FREE. You are scored by our writers for the restaurant awards, based on their experience, on various aspects of the dining experience including taste, food presentation, customer service, front of house etc. These scores are not published in Eastside but they help us form an accurate and balanced opinion. Stage 2: All entrants and categories (eg Best Indian, Best Afternoon Tea, Best Café etc.) will be announced in Eastside magazine, on our website and on Facebook at the beginning of September. We then give our readers

and your diners the chance to vote for their favourite in each category which will be added to the evaluations of our food reviewers to decide the category winner (similar to Strictly Come Dancing!) Stage 3: From all the entrants we then select the three restaurants with the highest scores to be shortlisted for the accolade of Eastside Restaurant of the Year. We then send a panel of ‘secret diner’ judges to experience all three restaurants and decide who the overall winner is. Stage 4: The Awards Dinner is on Monday 5 October when we invite all nominees to book a table or places at the dinner. All category winners will receive a special plaque that can be displayed in their restaurant. Stage 5: The awards ceremony and winners will also be featured within the November edition of Eastside, just in time for Christmas. Here’s a reminder to all restaurant, hotel, café and pub owners: to make sure your establishment is under consideration for the big prizes in 2020, contact Eastside’s publishing manager Terri Holt terri.holt@rmcmedia.co.uk or call her on 07841 901212.

Join our Judging Panel

Eastside Readers’ Choice Award 2020 You can get involved now by casting your vote for the Eastside Readers’ Choice. Whether you select your favourite local cafe, a much-loved Indian or Italian restaurant or any other type of food venue, all votes are equal. Voting is free: simply go online to www.rmcmedia.co.uk/events to let us know where you have enjoyed eating out most over the last 12 months. All entries must include a home address and contact details, any multiple entries from the same email address will be disqualified. Closing date: Monday 31 August

Sponsor an award Any business or individual can get involved in the Eastside Restaurant Awards by sponsoring one of our individual prizes. For example, Dining Diva Catering Equipment, who supply cutlery, plates, glassware and cleaning equipment to a variety of restaurants, hotels and cafes across the region, will once again be sponsoring our Best Newcomer award. A variety of different sponsorship packages are available. To find out more, contact Eastside publishing manager Terri Holt at terri.holt@rmcmedia.co.uk or call her on 07841 901212.

We also want to give Eastside readers a voice on the independent judging panel that decides the ultimate prize – the Eastside Restaurant of the Year. The search is on to find one reader to join with our other judges, all chosen for their knowledge of food and their passion for dining out on the Eastside scene, to eat together at the three venues that are shortlisted for the Eastside Restaurant of the Year. You can leave your credit cards at home; all we want is your opinions. And you will need to clear your diary for a few dates later this year when we bring the judges together to dine out and make their choices. Does this opportunity tickle your tastebuds? To apply for a place on our judging panel, please email the managing editor, Chris Wilson, at chris.wilson@rmcmedia.co.uk and tell him in no more than 150 words what qualities you think the judges should be looking out for in the search for Eastside’s Restaurant of the Year.

In safe hands Doncaster and Bassetlaw Teaching Hospitals (DBTH) has been rated ‘Good’ by the Care Quality Commission (CQC), following an inspection which took place in September and October. The Trust, which operates Doncaster Royal Infirmary (DRI), Bassetlaw Hospital and Montagu Hospital, cares for an average of 475,000 outpatients, 125,000 inpatients and 175,000 emergency admissions every single year. It is one of only six teaching hospitals in Yorkshire and Humber and trains about one third of all medical professionals within the region. The CQC report published in February recognises a number of areas of quality care, practice and improvement at the Trust. Reflecting an overall positive picture, this latest report means that, in addition to an overall Trust rating of ‘Good’, each individual hospital site operated by DBTH also shares the same accreditation.

The School of Artisan Food, near Worksop, won the title of Best British Cookery School in the first ever national Food and Drink Awards. Alison Swan Parente, founder of the School in the historic Welbeck estate, collected the award during the glittering ceremony that celebrated the very best of British gastronomy. Stephen Fry hosted the awards ceremony at the Merchant Taylors’ Hall in London that showcased the high-achievers of the food and drink industry. Among the winners, The School of Artisan Food was recognised for its contribution to teaching all aspects of artisan food production. “We are thrilled to receive this prestigious award,” said Alison Swan Parente, MBE founder of The School of Artisan Food. “It is a real honour and we are proud to have been recognised for our dedication to the sharing an understanding and appreciation of quality, artisan food.” “As a not-for profit organisation whose strong values and ethics around sustainability, bio-diversity and simple, healthy food inform everything we do, we pride ourselves on our many training courses for people of all skill levels. We particularly welcome the award at a time when the School is celebrating its 10th anniversary.” The Welbeck estate is home to Welbeck Bakehouse, Stichelton Dairy cheese made with milk from the estate’s own dairy herd, fresh raw milk from Welbeck Dairy, and handcrafted real ales from Welbeck Abbey Brewery. The produce is available within Welbeck Farm Shop in the Courtyard and also features on the menus within The Harley Café.
