Glamour, top racing action and a special appearance by pop idol Will Young... this year’s Visit Bawtry Race Day on Saturday 14 May promises to be an event not to be missed, says Phoebe Seymour.

the return of Visit Bawtry’s annual race meeting. The weather has let us down for the last two years, and though this has done nothing to dampen the guests’ spirits, everyone is
hopeful that the sun will also be making an appearance at this year’s event. This will be the fifth year that The Bawtry Retail Association (BRA) has hosted the event, which has fast become one of the

highlights on the town’s social calendar. Taking place at Doncaster Racecourse, the event gives local businesses a chance to enjoy some fine food and drink at The Old Weighing Rooms Restaurant and Bar and to mingle with other glamorous ladies and suited men out on the Champagne Lawn, within prime viewing of the sporting action. This year’s sponsors are the Crown Hotel, Robinsons of Bawtry, China Rose, Fine & Country, Portland Autos, and first time sponsors Coleman’s Pizzeria & Steakhouse. Each business will be sponsoring one of the seven races that will be taking place on the evening. The event will be taking place on Saturday 14 May 2016 with more than 10,000 guests expected to attend. Gates open at 3pm with the first race taking place at 5.45pm and the final race at 8.45 pm. “We are very much looking forward to our fifth Visit Bawtry race day and to welcoming businesses and their guests to this very special occasion in our social event

calendar,” said Rebecca Dickenson, chair of the Bawtry Retail Association. “Doncaster Racecourse is a great platform to promote the work that we do and the fantastic diverse range of businesses, restaurants and retailers that we have in Bawtry.” There will be a dedicated Visit Bawtry marquee on the Champagne Lawn, with its own bar serving pre-booked afternoon tea and live music from local band Jack of Harps and the Dealers. This will also be the third race meeting that will include live music after the racing. We are very excited to announce that this year’s event will end with a live performance by 2002 Pop Idol winner Will Young. With many well-loved hits under his belt such as Evergreen and Leave Right Now, the singer is sure to dazzle the crowd as evening falls on the racecourse. “Once again, the race day is expected to sell out so we are urging people to secure their tickets early,” says Rebecca. “It will be
another superb way to put Bawtry on the map – educating race goers on what a great place it is to shop, socialise, stay, live and do business. It’s all here!” The Bawtry Retail Association is a member organisation that is dedicated to working with the town’s retailers – including designer clothing boutiques, art galleries, gift shops, home accessories stores and specialist food outlets – to promote Bawtry as a retail and social destination.
For more information about the Visit Bawtry race day, go to www.doncaster-racecourse.co.uk or phone 01302 304200. Early booking is advised. Grandstand tickets start at £35 each whilst premier tickets are £60 each. Additional and hospitality packages are also available. Further information can also be found at www.visitbawtry.com.

Are you taking on a Commercial Lease? If you’re thinking of becoming a commercial property tenant it is vital to understand what you are taking on. Signing up to a commercial lease is very different from renting residential property, with a range of responsibilities that can come as a big surprise if you’re not prepared. ES Interview
The Visit Bawtry Race Day has an extra special guest this year – former Pop Idol Will Young. Stephanie Burns talked to the multi-talented artist in the run-up to his appearance at Doncaster Racecourse.

logger, documentary presenter, LGBT activist, animal rights supporter, and – oh yeah – pop star-cum-actor, you’re as likely to read about Will Young’s various campaigns in the news as you are to see him performing on stage or screen these days. I was one of the 12 million rapt viewers who watched Will rocket to fame as the very first Pop Idol in 2002 – all baggy jeans and raw talent, he captured the nation’s heart in an instant. But from his first ‘cheesy’ (Dr Fox’s words, not mine) rendition of ‘Blame It on the Boogie’ at his audition aged 22, he’s come a long way. And as we chatted on the phone ahead of his performance at Doncaster Racecourse on 14 May, I discovered that there are many more sides to the 37-year-old than I’d really expected to find. For one, he takes his job seriously. “At the end of the day, the most important thing [in my work] is that it’s for the audience,” he says, noisily making a cup of coffee at his friend’s house in London in the background. “I’m like a servant. It’s like being the waiter in a restaurant, I’m just the deliverer of this stuff. I get a lot of pleasure out of that because that’s my job on stage, to make the night run as smoothly as it can, and that’s a really fulfilling job.” It’s the carte blanche to do whatever he likes with his tours and live performances – changing the look of them, the arrangement of the music, the lighting – that he loves most about this aspect of his work. “Any great art always has quite an important grounding message,” he says, “but that doesn’t mean that it’s really serious. I let my imagination run riot and it’s really fun. If you want to come along to a show and have a laugh and enjoy some confetti, then that’s what we’ve got. Or if you want to write a thesis on the show, then you can probably do that as well.” An academic analysis of a pop show… now there’s an idea. He’s not entirely joking. Will’s a deep thinker – he studied politics at the University of Exeter – and, in the last few years, has had good reason to delve into the way the mind works. On the verge of breakdown, he removed himself from the spotlight and took the time he needed to heal. His journey back from the brink is something he’s spoken about openly, but this frankness doesn’t stem from a mission to educate the world on mental wellbeing. “As long as I feel that it’s appropriate and safe for me to do so, then I’m happy to share anything that I’m comfortable sharing,” he says. “I’ve been privileged enough to have had
www.regionalmagazine.co.uk
a lot of very good help and I’m quite enlightened so I will talk about these kind of things. But it’s not for me to force other people to talk about that kind of stuff.” His sixth studio album 85% Proof – which Clash described as ‘a masterclass in delivering a mature pop record’ – took just ten days to write and debuted at number one in the UK Albums Chart when it was released last year It’s a mixture of upbeat pop and soulful melodies that reflect the difficulties he faced in this dark period and the light that he eventually found at the end of the tunnel. While mental wellbeing in the broader sense isn’t on his mission agenda, young LGBT people’s mental health certainly is. He has blasted Education Secretary Nicky Morgan, saying she’s reluctant to tackle homophobic bullying in schools and is ‘dead behind the eyes’. Ouch. “I get really hot under the collar about [the lack of support for young LGBT people],” he says. “And rightfully so because
very little is done and I think we all rest on our laurels. There is no real huge push and I think there has to be. So I’m kind of like the guy who just shouts and screams and gets a bit petulant and I’m quite happy to do that.” He’s quietened a little since his Morgan bashing and is currently collating information, finding out what action teachers, young LGBT charities, parents and the children themselves want taken. We absolutely haven’t heard the end of this argument and it’s clear that Will won’t rest until he gets the change he’s fighting for. In the meantime, he’s continuing to write blogs, film documentaries, promote his work with WWF, take on acting jobs, and – of course – focus on his music. Is there anything left for him to try his hand at? “There’s nothing that I’m dying to do,” he explains. “Two years ago I had this whole list of things and now everything’s like a bonus. It’s a bit like I’m on a boat and I let the current take me to wherever it takes me. “The fear of losing something can actually stop someone enjoying it but I’m very pleased with what I’ve done and it allows me to really enjoy it all, because I’m not scared of it going away. But I would never have imagined that I could have incorporated all of these different parts of me into one job – never in my wildest dreams.” Will Young will perform at Doncaster Racecourse on Saturday 14 May after the Visit Bawtry Race Day. For tickets, visit www.doncasterracecourse.co.uk.

2016 is a big year for the Regional Magazine Company (RMC) as we launch our 30th anniversary celebrations - and we are looking for other businesses who have managed to stand the test of time to join in the fun. Our story started way back in 1986 when the first copy of our first magazine, Westside, was published. We’ve grown considerably since then into a company that publishes nine monthly lifestyle and business titles across Yorkshire, North Notts and North Derbyshire, as well as publishing books for some of Great Britain’s most prestigious restaurants. We also have a strong online presence and we’ll be celebrating our 30th with a major relaunch of our website. 1986 was the year Prince Andrew married Sarah Ferguson, Gary Lineker set a UK transfer record when he moved to Barcelona for £2.75million, Margaret Thatcher opened the M25 and the first episode of Casualty was aired. Since then, as anyone who has been in business the same length of time will know, there have been good times as well as upsets, recessions and major changes across the world. So, if you also set up your business in the year of 1986, congratulations on standing the test of time and here’s a birthday gift from RMC for you. We are offering a free advert in one of our titles. There’s no catch - it’s as simple as that. Contact: jillion.wood@regionalmagazine.co.uk to find out more.

Spring-summer inspiration Thinking about tying the knot at The Crown Hotel, Bawtry? Their recent open day showcased the best they have to offer.
T
he arrival of spring signals the start of the most exciting time in the social calendar – the wedding season. And while many venues’ open days and wedding fairs have long been and gone, The Crown Hotel in Bawtry were delighted to welcome lots of newly engaged couples to their springthemed wedding opening evening on 7 April. On arrival, guests were treated to a glass of fizz and a selection of canapes before discussing the details of their big day with one of the dedicated wedding co-ordinators – all to the backdrop of the electronic violinist Alexandra Parker. White Rose Occasions decorated the Hogarth and Leger suites in a beautiful spring theme, with pinks, creams and florals in abundance. Coupled with gorgeous ceiling drapes, twinkle lights and stunning table decorations, the rooms were transformed into wedding wonderlands. Also on hand was head chef Caz, who has been serving up delicious food from the Crown kitchen for more than 30 years. Not only was she able to discuss the finer details
of each menu option, but the actual dishes were also cooked and displayed so guests could envisage exactly how their wedding breakfast would be presented. To highlight every element of the Crown’s unique appeal, each couple enjoyed a personal tour of the hotel, including the Hogarth and Leger suites, the twinkle-lit landscaped garden, The Vanilla Rooms hair salon,Vanilla Essence beauty room, and the sumptuous bedrooms. One part of the hotel the guests weren’t able to access, however, was Room 1 – one of two beautiful bridal suites at the hotel – which was in the process of total renovation. All the details of this fabulous new refurbishment will be revealed in next month’s Eastside, so keep your eyes peeled. In addition to White Rose Occasions and Alexandra Parker, many more of the Crown’s key wedding partners were also in attendance. There were dresses by Celebrations of Bawtry, a candy cart by Amelia’s Sweet Occasions, stunning cakes by the Classic and

Simple formula
Why overcomplicate things? Coleman’s offering of steak and pizza seems to be proving a real hit with Bawtry diners.
S
ince joining the thriving Bawtry dining scene last March, Coleman’s Pizzeria and Steakhouse has built an impressive reputation for serving top-quality dishes in stylish surroundings. John Coleman, who owns the restaurant with his wife Sarah, harboured a dream of setting up Doncaster’s first steakhouse for six years before taking the plunge. “It’s essentially just steaks and pizzas – it’s simple, but it works,” John says. Pizzas proving especially popular are The Posh One, which is topped with fillet steak strips, cambazola, red onion marmalade, peppercorn sauce drizzle and rocket and ‘Posh’ Bacon and Brie, which offers a mouthwatering combination of pancetta, brie, mozzarella, chilli chutney and rocket. But John says steaks are the main attraction. “Rib eye and fillet are the most popular, on a Saturday night we sell 45 fillets easily. We also do piri-piri chicken and lamb, but most people come for steak and pizza.” The couple welcome everyone from kids to couples to parties every night of the week and they make sure to keep things fresh by updating the menu regularly. One recent addition is the world’s priciest beef, wagyu beef, which will soon be available at Coleman’s in sirloin, ribeye and a burger. Known for its superior taste, intense fat marbling and mouth-wateringly juicy texture, this tantalising steak is the crème de la crème

of the meat world and adds yet another item onto the long list of reasons to visit. “We are also trying out more of a variety of burgers as well,” John says. “We are thinking of doing a mojito lamb burger, and an Asian-style minced chicken burger.” Coleman’s offer all cuts of steak from 7oz upwards, which they source from Prospect Home Farm in Mexborough. A long-standing highlight of the menu is the incredible 72oz rump steak – the biggest in Doncaster. “We’ve probably sold about 30 of them – and every single one has been just one person eating it on their own, but the idea of it was actually to have a cheap meal for four people!” John adds: “It’s the same with the 20oz fillet we do, again it’s always one person, but the idea was to have it as a sharer.” There’s plenty on offer at lunchtime too,
with any pizza for £7, or a sandwich and chips for £5.50, as well as the new ‘steak-away’ option, where your favourite steak can be ordered to take away. Alongside the fantastic food, the great customer service has also been winning them rave reviews. “We try to give good friendly service and interact with customers,” said John. “It’s not just about the food, but the whole experience.” Whether you’re looking to celebrate in style, enjoy a hearty lunch or a relaxed evening out, at Coleman’s Pizzeria and Steakhouse you can be sure of delicious food and a night to remember. Dishes such as seared king scallops with salmon ribbons, shredded cabbage and mustard emulsion, and spiced white chocolate semifreddo with pistachio biscotti and chocolate are designed to surprise and delight discerning diners. The hall has also quickly gained a reputation as one of the area’s most stunning wedding venues. Coleman’s Pizzeria & Steakhouse It’s been just over a year since Coleman’s Pizzeria & Steakhouse opened in the heart of Bawtry, and business is booming. The new menu has more steaks and burgers than ever, and this includes the world’s priciest beef, wagyu steak. Known for its superior taste, intense fat marbling and mouth-wateringly juicy texture, this tantalising steak is the crème de la crème of the meat world. A longer-standing highlight of the menu is the incredible 72oz rump steak – the biggest in Doncaster. Whilst steak – and their best-selling pizza selection – are specialities, they also serve up a great range of other dishes such as ribs (with homemade BBQ sauce), nachos, burgers, salads and sides. Coleman’s was crowned Best Newcomer at last year’s Eastside Restaurant Awards and, if their first year is anything to go by, they are set for even greater things to come.

Coleman’s Bistro at The Blacksmiths Arms What happens when you take two Bawtry businesses and combine them into one country pub? The answer is Coleman’s Bistro at The Blacksmiths Arms in Everton, the latest venture from Andy Miller and Andy Longworth of Bawtry’s Bar & Brasserie and John and Sarah Coleman of Coleman’s Pizzeria & Steakhouse. The group joined forces last November to relaunch this well-established pub and the result is something really rather special. The licensee – and the face of this new incarnation – is Claire Fleetwood, who has been working for Andy Longworth since 1988. With years of experience running some of the region’s bestknown establishments, she’s the driving force behind the early success of this new eatery. The Sunday carvery in particular is going down a storm and it’s already become a buzzing weekend haunt for Bawtry regulars who fancy a change from the norm. ES Eating Out
Don’t be fooled by the olde worlde exterior, the cooking at Caviars is bang up to date, writes Chris Wilson.
Words: Chris Wilson
O
n first impressions there is a lovely old-fashioned feel to the exterior of Caviars. The classically simple black and white paintwork, with contrasting colour-drenched hanging baskets, is entirely in keeping with those quieter corners of Bawtry where it seems that sleepy English small town life is alive and well. But there is nothing cosy or conservative about the ambitious food being produced by executive chef Darren Rogan and his team. In fact, close inspection of a menu that looks deceptively simple at first glance reveals that it is liberally stuffed with flourishes, confirming it has been put together with a lot of care and craft. For example, starters include a cauliflower and white onion soup with white truffle oil, garlic crouton and a cheese and olive scone, while mackerel fillet is served with saffron sautéed potatoes, cucumber and a horseradish bonbon. Clearly, nobody is coasting here, and with a young waiting staff full of enthusiasm, Caviars can’t fail to make a strong impact... but will the food taste as good as it reads? Absolutely. A terrific dining experience began with king scallops, sweet and salty, served on what the menu described as a ham knuckle compression but I’d call it a brilliant and tender terrine. With vanilla soaked grapes and baked hazelnuts on the side, and a sprinkling of edible wildflowers for showstopping presentation, this was quite something.

New England Our second starter of Harrogate blue cheese ravioli with spinach veloute, parmesan tuille and pickled apple looked almost plain by comparison but once again was packed with flavour, and the contrast of the crunchy tuille against the velvety pasta was a lovely touch. presentation, with strong flavours and contrasting textures to provide constant interest. My companion’s plate of pork was probably the most impressive dish of the evening, a killer combo of belly pork, Parma ham tenderloin, braised cheek, fondant potato, apple puree, mini toffee apple and red wine sauce. That’s not just a list of ingredients by the way, it’s a symphony on a plate. My duck breast, served with a chive croquette, salt-baked sweet potato puree, honey-glazed swede, shallot rings and red wine jus, was another perfectly balanced plate of food. The duck was nicely pink and tender, too. Whatever you order, don’t miss the opportunity to try a side portion of perfect triple-cooked chips, light and fluffy inside, with a seriously crunchy exterior. You might say that deconstructed dishes have become a bit of a dining cliché, so let’s call my dessert dish of peach melba a reinterpretation instead. Served on a black slate for maximum impact, this combination of poached peach, vanilla panna cotta, raspberry sorbet and white chocolate shards was creative, colourful and simply delicious. Not to be overshadowed, our second dessert of chocolate delice was dark, rich and smooth. Served with pistachio ice-cream and pistachio brittle, every mouthful was savoured. So what’s happening in this sleepy corner of old England? Something special to arouse the interest of the most jaded diner, that’s what.

Time to celebrate
Napoleons Casino is marking its 20th anniversary with a week-long celebration of amazing special offers.
P
arty time is approaching at Napoleons later this month as the casino and restaurant celebrates an amazing 20 years in business at Owlerton Stadium; so dust off your nineties gear and prepare to enjoy one full week of special offers, events and promotions. Starting Monday 16 May and going through to Sunday 22 May, there will be fabulous prize giveaways, anniversary party nights, 20 per cent off prosecco all week and the fantastic opportunity to dine out in style for just £19.96. George Forsyth, General Manager, commented: “It’s hard to believe that we’re celebrating our 20th anniversary in a matter of weeks. We’re a traditional casino less than three miles from Sheffield city centre and have been at our current site since 1996. In October 2014 we completed a £2million refurbishment and extension which introduced a new restaurant, new bar, new lounge, extended gaming floor, and the first outdoor gaming terrace outside of London.” George continued: “We’re often referred to as the ‘friendly casino’ by our customers

who always tell us that they can totally relax in our comfortable atmosphere. They find that all of our staff (from managers to croupiers to valets) are very ‘hands-on’ and welcoming. Our managers can always be found out and about on the casino floor talking to customers and ensuring everyone is having the best possible experience. “Everyone is really looking forward to the anniversary and I am very proud of what we have achieved so far. With that said, I would like to invite everyone, including all of our customers old and new, to join us in celebrating this special milestone at Napoleons Owlerton.”
Come along to Owlerton’s anniversary week, beginning Monday 16 May, and pop in to see George and his team to find out why Napoleons is still everyone’s favourite Casino after 20 Years! Owner Metin Koca (far right) with the team at Lalezar
Turkish delight Lalezar’s true taste of the Middle East evoke fond memories of a memorable summer holiday for Fiona Barber. have only ever been to Turkey once – Marmaris to be exact. It was the summer of 2013, and a glorious trip of many firsts: the first summer holiday with my partner, the one (and only) time I would wallow in a mud bath or take a dip in a sulphur pool (phwoar!), and lastly, but most importantly, my first proper taste of Middle Eastern cuisine. Since then, my love of hummus, flatbreads and koftas has only intensified, and if – like me – you are partial to such delights, it’s great to know there’s a place in Doncaster we can go to get our fix. Lalezar has been serving up top-quality Turkish dishes since opening its doors to eager customers two years ago and, judging by the packed-out venue when we arrived early one Friday evening, it’s proving extremely popular. The menu is extensive and varied,

which made choosing what to have no easy feat, but the hot mixed meze provided the ideal solution. With generous slices of savoury halloumi, Turkish sausage, and falafel, and rings of crisp calamari, it offered a selection of the best, and we savoured every last bite. While my partner couldn’t resist the mixed kebab, on the recommendation of owner Metin Koca I opted for the Levrek Izgara: a marinated sea bass barbequed on the charcoal grill. The impressive fish was a real treat; crisp skin and meaty flesh flavoured with that distinctive smoky barbeque flavour, which can only be achieved by hot coals. In true carnivore style, my partner was digging into his meat feast – an exciting medley of cop shish, Adana kebab, chicken shish, spare ribs and, a special mention must be given to the flavour-packed lamb chops, which were truly sensational. In keeping with the theme, a refreshing pint of Effes proved the perfect accompaniment for both of us. No matter how big the feast, I always make room for baklava, which I was thrilled to find on Lalezar’s dessert menu. A dish of four perfectly formed parcels of crisp filo pastry, layered with crushed walnuts and soaked in honey, was the perfect way to end an all-round excellent meal. With relaxed surroundings, friendly service, top Turkish cuisine – and not a mud bath or sulphur pool in sight – it won’t be long before I make a return visit.

eflexology is enjoying ever-increasing popularity as it is an excellent way in which to improve your health and maintain it by natural, drug-free treatment. Generally we are more health and fitness conscious than we used to be, and assuming a greater role in looking after our own health; reflexology is just one of the natural means by which we can achieve the aim of good health.
creative craft kits and lots more…
Can reflexology be used as a means of diagnosis? In addition to being able to treat all sorts of different disorders, it can also be used as a means of diagnosis, to the extent that it can be used to detect which parts of the body are working well and which are not. This can often be helpful in finding the cause of a specific problem and may also help prevent other problems arising. It must be noted though, that it cannot be used to diagnose to the extent of giving definite names to disorders, but just to the extent of establishing where imbalances exist within the body. Reflexology is suitable for both sexes, all age groups, from the young through to the elderly. Having been involved with reflexology for well over a decade, it gives me great pleasure to see the growing interest in a method that can be so helpful to so many and without harmful side-effects.

ES Dog Rescue
Mayflower Sanctuary founder and manager Jennie Foxhall-Lord with some of her many four-legged friends
Why Jennie is a dog’s best friend Eastside’s Fiona Barber meets a woman whose life’s work is giving new lives and new hope to canine waifs and strays.

E
xcited dog barks pierced the air as my car trundled along the narrow dirt road towards Mayflower Animal Sanctuary. It was almost visiting time and these clever canines knew it; with visiting comes the possibility of a potential new owner, a new home, a fresh start. The animal sanctuary – which rehomes both dogs and cats – was established back in 2003 and, what was once home to a family who bred German shepherds now houses 35 cats and 32 rescue dogs. Mayflower’s founder and sanctuary manager Jennie Foxhall-Lord started the
sanctuary back in 1999. “I ran it from home with foster homes to start with and I gathered volunteers along the way,” she says. “We fundraised a bit of money and were lucky enough to be able to come here. It’s always been a bit of a passion. Dogs seem to find you – I’ve been doing animal rescue for 40-odd years.” When they first moved in, the site included a block of kennels, some old garages and a caravan. “The caravan had no door and visitors of rats and mice.” Jennie says. “We did everything from there until we managed to buy a portable building in 2003. It has come a long way.”
www.regionalmagazine.co.uk
050 - 051 ESide May16_Layout 1 21/04/2016 11:59 Page 2
The sanctuary now has a proper reception area, several kennel blocks and a paddock area where visitors can take dogs for walks. With grant money from Adoption For Pets two of the kennels are currently being refurbished. Just like all of the work that happens here, none of it would be possible without donations and the dedication of their staff and many volunteers. As well taking in English dogs, they also rescue strays from Cyprus. Jennie explains: “My son and his wife live in Cyprus and it started with one dog about six years ago – we were still doing quarantine then. They fundraised to start the pet passport and over the years English people have set up their own small groups in Cyprus. Unfortunately, in Cyprus, they don’t have any animal welfare laws yet, the same in Romania and Spain. The Cypriots, like a lot of people in other countries, think the dogs aren’t pets and they are used for hunting. We are fortunate here that we have laws; at least people know that if you hurt a dog or a cat then you will be punished for it. That’s why we help when we can. It doesn’t matter where the dog comes from, at the end of the day, it’s a dog.” The team at Mayflower don’t allow dogs to go to just any home and their matching service makes sure – as far as possible – that when someone adopts a dog, owner and pet are perfect for each other. They also carry out home visits to check that fencing is secure, there’s a bolt on the gate, and the dog’s not going to be left too long. Jennie says: “Once they’ve said yes, this is the right person for the dog, the new owner can come back as often as they want to get to know the dog. We are very fortunate in that we have four Jan Fennel dog listeners who are behaviourists that do a talk on a Saturday morning before the dog can be adopted.” All new owners are required to
attend the talk, which teaches leadership skills. She adds: “We realise how important it is that we give the new owners a really good start and the dog listeners are there to support the new owner all the way through the dog’s life.” When a dog comes into the sanctuary it is spayed or neutered, vaccinated, chipped and wormed so it is ready to be homed. Mayflower asks new owners for a donation of £200-300 depending on the type of dog to cover these expenses. But, with an average monthly vets bill of around £4,000-5,000 they still need more help.

Take pride
Words: Phoebe Seymour
From kitchens to bedrooms and bathrooms to heating, you’ll find everything you need to make your house a home.
H
omes have gone through some radical changes over the past 50 years. Take kitchens for example; they are brimming with gadgets and appliances that would seem almost space age to the average 1960s homeowner. One thing that hasn’t changed, however, is the pride we take in turning our houses into homes. Houseproud in Retford specialises in supplying and fitting kitchens, bathrooms and bedrooms. The Houseproud team consists of directors Philip Taylor, Mark Reddington and Jayne Adams, together with sales designer/project manager Gareth Osman. Houseproud is a family business and was established by two of the directors’ fathers, Colin Taylor and Douglas Adams. Colin and Douglas started out as plumbing and heating specialists in 1965, before opening the first showroom on John Street in 1980. The business eventually expanded into two showrooms in the town centre, before relocating to its new premises at Trinity Park five years ago. The new showroom is much larger, offering a light and airy space with a wide selection of bathrooms, bedrooms, kitchens, fireplaces and stoves on display. You will find some of the best contemporary and traditional kitchens made in the UK and Germany, together with appliances from big brand names such as Neff

and Fisher & Paykel. They also design bespoke worktops in laminate, granite, quartz and corian. When it comes to bathrooms, Houseproud supply and fit sanitaryware, as well as selling a wide choice of vanity units, mirrors cabinets and accessories. They also specialise in showers for the less able, with accessories including anti-slip surfaces, grab rails and seating. In the heating department, Houseproud has long been a stockist and installer of multifuel (wood-burning), gas and electric stoves and fires, with many Stovax and Gazco designs on display. They also offer stoves from leading brands Arada, Dovre,Yeoman and Euroheat. Houseproud offers full project management on all installations such as electrical work, plumbing and tiling and a free survey and quotation service is available. The business even offers a supply only service, offering the same survey and quotation deal so even if you are a retail customer with your own kitchen fitter at the ready do not hesitate to ask about this service. Delivery of Houseproud’s products is also completely free. Furthermore, they stock a range of ceramic and porcelain tiles and are the only local stockist of Wineo Vinyl Flooring, which is well-known for its quality and value for money. The company’s long-established
reputation is based on its happy customers, and the showroom’s many thank you cards certainly reinforce this. “We believe in quality products and a quality service to match,” says Jayne. “We get lots of referrals and returning customers. Once we’ve done one room, we end up going through the whole house.” So whether you would like to modernise one room with the newest and most innovative oven, or refit your whole house, Houseproud are here to help. The showroom is conveniently located off Randall Park Way with plenty of free, onsite parking available. View some of Houseproud’s work on their Facebook site at www.facebook.com/Houseproud-Retford. Sleep easy Spring cleaning your home? Make a new bed your top priority.
N
ow that spring is in full swing, it’s a great time to throw out the old and bring in the new. This is especially true for beds. As the years go by, your mattress may not be giving you the same comfort and support it once did. Whether you are looking for a simple single bed or a king size bed with added storage space, The Bed Shop on Hallgate, Doncaster is brimming with three floors full of sleep inspiration. The Bed Shop was established over 40 years ago and although there are six branches in total, they still consider themselves a local business for local people. Having been around for so long, The Bed Shop has seen its excellent reputation grow, resulting in a lot of repeat and word-ofmouth business. Keith Winter, store manager says: “Being such a long-standing business means people have built up a lot of trust with us. It’s very rare that anyone has any problems with our products, but it’s reassuring for customers to know that if they did we would still be here to sort it out for them. “Our excellent customer service has given us a great reputation and it’s always

nice to be recommended by others – it happens a lot. Not long ago we sold a bed to a young woman who was recommended to us by her parents, whose bed they had bought from us when she was still in a pushchair. It’s nice to hear, but it does make you feel old!” The Bed Shop has a large selection of beautiful bedroom furniture and mattresses in appealing styles and finishes, and also sells divans, bed frames, furniture, electric beds and recline chairs. “We pride ourselves on an excellent delivery service and top brand beds at the lowest prices,” says Keith, The Bed Shop’s delivery service is free of charge. They can also dispose of your old bed. The shop always has discounts and offers. Their main offer at the moment is a free upgrade to a king size bed if you buy a double on selected models, and drawers free of charge. So if you are looking for a bed that leaves you feeling well rested and which puts the spring back in your step this season, The Bed Shop showroom is the place to go. Animal magic With a host of activities taking place – from ranger talks to wallaby walks – Love Your Zoo Week is the perfect time to visit Yorkshire Wildlife Park. By Phoebe Seymour.
W
ith Love Your Zoo Week just around the corner, there’s never been a better time to monkey around at your local zoo, the Yorkshire Wildlife Park. Held between the 28 May and 4 June, this will be the fifth year that the British and Irish Association of Zoos and Aquariums (BIAZA) have launched the week-long event. To celebrate Love Your Zoo Week, BIAZA members Yorkshire Wildlife Park (YWP) will be running a variety of activities to encourage the public to get more involved and to learn more about the great work the park does. Each day of the week will be dedicated to a different species of animal and will feature a number of talks, crafts, workshops and games for all the family to enjoy. Last year’s events included a lion day, a giraffe day and a polar day. May 2016 coincides with the sixth anniversary of the lions’ debut at the park and promises to be an even bigger and better celebration than before. Visitors last year also wrote messages of gratitude on the ‘big love’ heart board and had a chance to enter the Best Animal Selfie photo competition. As well as the return of all these fantastic activities, there will be plenty of opportunities to attend the normally scheduled ranger talks and feeding times at each of the park’s locations including the Wallaby Walkabout, Lion Country and Project Polar. Built on a former riding school and farm, YWP has come a long way since it opened in April 2009.
60
Director Cheryl and CEO John Minion couldn’t have imagined just how quickly the park would expand.Year on year the park has grown at an astonishing rate, with visitor numbers climbing from 66,000 in the first year, to a whopping 682,000 in 2015. A dynamic centre for conservation and welfare, the park has over 300 animals and over 60 different species of animal. YWP has become a major force in animal conservation with a respected record for animal welfare and conservation, raising awareness of the plight of endangered species and taking part in critical European and worldwide breeding programmes. Cheryl, who is also CEO of the Yorkshire Wildlife Park Foundation said: “Our visitors have also responded by supporting our fundraising efforts for conservation and animal welfare and our projects around the world – and they should be proud of their part in an international effort that is turning back the tide for some species.” The recent redevelopment of the Africa Plains has been particularly successful, providing a sanctuary for and raising awareness of endangered species featured there such as the giraffe and the critically endangered addax. Over the past seven years,YWP has won a series of awards for its animal welfare projects and business performance, securing itself as one of the UK’s best wildlife attractions and winning the prestigious Gold Accolade from Visit England for the past two years. “It is fantastic to be celebrating our seventh birthday and the achievements of Yorkshire Wildlife Park,” said CEO John. “Everyone here has worked very hard to create a dynamic conservation centre and
great family attraction that brings people closer to animals both physically and emotionally.” Throughout the year, visitors can enjoy unique walk through experiences, coming almost face to face with some of the world’s most beautiful and endangered species. Book in for a carnivore, giraffe or polar bear experience, take a VIP tour, or if you are serious about a career in conservation, discover their ranger and junior ranger opportunities. “YWP is about a great family day out and seeing smiles on faces and the wonderment in children’s eyes as they get close to lions, tigers or polar bears is complete job satisfaction for us. “We are proud to be a local and national success and to put Doncaster on the map for tourism.” So whether it is your first time or you are keen to get more involved with your local zoo, Love Your Zoo Week is a great time to show your appreciation and to make the most of all the wonderful things YWP has to offer. To find out more about the fantastic events taking place during Love Your Zoo Week, visit www.yorkshirewildlifepark.com or call 01302 535057.

Nissan turns up the drama on the GT-R The current-gen Nissan GT-R has been with us now since 2007, and every year since the Japanese company has tickled its underbelly and internal workings – an extra dollop of power here, a suspension tweak there. You get the idea. Now Nissan has really gone to town with the MY17 edition and the changes are the most dramatic yet. In essence, the car’s looks have been changed giving it a more aggressive stance on the road with better aerodynamic properties. There’s a more luxurious new interior with fewer buttons and better sound deadening. The suspension has been changed to give better handling and improve ride quality. Power has also been raised to 562hp. The order books opened this month with first deliveries this autumn.
Jordan Cutforth rounds up the latest from the world of motoring. Feel the noise The latest generation of the Audi R8 is a welcome relief. Instead of following the rest of the industry by downsizing and turbo-charging their engines, the R8 has stuck to its guns and kept to a naturallyaspirated formula. Not only are these engines more responsive compared to their turbo-charged counterparts, but they’re considerably louder too. As you would expect, the R8 Coupe is a fantastically aurally stimulating machine but this can only get better because now the Spyder version is coming along. Available to order from later in the spring with deliveries at the end of the year, the new R8 Spyder will come with a 532hp 5.2-litre V10 powerhouse mated to an S-Tronic dualclutch gearbox. As with the Coupe, there’s no manual available.
Diesel joins the Club With the launch of the latest Mini Clubman back in October of last year, it was only a matter of time before the most fuel-efficient diesel variant was placed under the bonnet. It’s called the One D Clubman and it’ll be powered by a 1.5-litre three-cylinder diesel producing 116hp, which can get the Clubman from 0-62mph in 10.4 seconds. Not bad for a car which in manual trim emits less than 100g/km of CO2 and manages 74.3mpg on the combined cycle. Automatic is slightly less frugal. High standard equipment levels which includes the likes of Mini Navigation, DAB, Bluetooth, Cruise control, MINI Connected and MINI Excitement Pack, 16inch alloy wheels, sports leather steering wheel and automatic lights and wipers. Available now. Priced from £21,375.
Reach for the sky Want your German super-coupe to be a little more… draughty? Well we have good news for you; the C63 is going topless. It’s the C63 AMG Cabriolet and it’s an electricallyoperated multi-layered fabric job which can be lowered or raised at speeds of up to 31mph. As it’ll be based on the C63 AMG coupe, it’ll come with the same 4.0-litre bi-turbo V8 motor producing either 469hp or 503hp in C63 S guise, and it’ll come with all the same equipment options. It literally is a C63 with the roof chopped off. It’ll weigh more than the regular car, and certainly cost more too. But will you really care when there’s millions of miles of blue sky at your disposal. The C63 Cabriolet will be launched in August..

Nissan teams up with the Yorkshire Wildlife Park
A new fleet of cars has roared to life at the award-winning Yorkshire Wildlife Park. The vehicles will be used around the park and for the education team to visit schools to deliver sessions on ppolar bears, climate change and sustainability. As part of a sponsorship deal with dealership Evans Halshaw, they have been decorated with striking graphics of some of the park’s most famous animals including Victor the polar bear and Drake, the Amur leopard. “The Yorkshire Wildlife Park is such a great local attraction and we’re happy to be supporting it, especially since we heard a polar bear named Nissan was moving in,” said Andrew Lane, dealer principal at Evans Halshaw Nissan Doncaster. “It’s a privilege to be able to provide the team with these practical and eye-catching vehicles to help with the everyday running of the park.” www.yorkshirewildlifepark.com
