Why does it make sense to instruct a local solicitor? For many people, selling and buying their home is one of the most daunting and stressful times of their lives. This applies equally to first time buyers who are taking their first step onto the property ladder and to those who are selling one property and buying another. Your conveyancing lawyer will be at the very heart of your transaction and it is vital that you instruct someone who is right for the job and who will be on hand to answer all of your queries no matter how small. At Jones and Co we pride ourselves on having a team of solicitors who have a good knowledge of the local area and who will be able to help you at every stage of the transaction. We deal with all types of property matters, including sales and purchases, remortgages, equity

releases, transfers of equity and commercial property matters too. Be wary if your estate agent recommends an out of town firm to deal with your conveyancing transaction. You may find yourself dealing with what is known as a ‘conveyancing house’. These practices are usually based at out of town call centres which are not readily accessible for appointments and there is no guarantee that the person dealing with your transaction will have any knowledge of the local area. When you are dealing with a local solicitor you always have the reassurance of knowing that you can call into the office to collect or drop off papers and get an answer to any queries. When obtaining a quote for your conveyancing transaction you should ensure that there are no hidden fees. We recommend that you should always ask if everything is included and if you have any

doubts, ask for a full breakdown of the fees which you are being charged. Jones and Co will always provide you with a breakdown of all fees for any conveyancing transaction and we are confident that our quotes are transparent and accurate. SHOEHEALER A JEWEL IN DONCASTER’S CROWN oncaster has many a claim to fame; it is home to two of the oldest horse races in the world, the iconic Flying Scotsman locomotive and, although sometimes controversial, the ever popular Jeremy Clarkson, who was born in and raised around the town. More recently though, there is a new jewel in the crown: what is widely regarded as the finest shoe shop in the North of England Shoehealer. Based on Scot Lane, Shoehealer is a specialist shoe shop, working with six of the world's finest shoemakers, including Loake, Tricker's, Barker, Church's, Cheaney and Alfred Sargent. Carrying near 2000 pairs, with access to thousand's more from factories around Northamptonshire. It is often said that the 'shoes maketh the man', and whether it be the perfect pair for a wedding, a compliment to your favourite suit for the races or simply a casual indulgence, Shoehealer has something for everyone.

D

“As consumers today, we live in a 'throwaway society’,” says Richard Smith, business partner at Shoehealer. “A ‘stack em high and sell em cheap mentality that sees our high streets flooded with inferior quality imports. “In England however, we do something better than the rest, because English handmade shoes are revered around the world for quality and style.”

If you haven't yet been for the Shoehealer ‘treatment', why not call and see for yourself what all the fuss is about. A warm welcome awaits and private shopping is available too, by appointment. Shoehealer 42-44 Scot Lane, Doncaster, DN1 1ES Tel: 01302 329965 www.shoehealer.co.uk

BRITTAINS Brittains in Doncaster are well- known for producing the finest quality premium vodkas. Husband and wife team, John and Fiona Raper, are behind the popular Raspberry Vodka. The drink development began with raspberries from local fruit producers in Tickhill being crafted into a now sought after beverage. Although the initial project began with raspberries, the team haven’t stopped there. Once their signature product was perfected, John began experimenting with new ingredients and this has led to ten new flavours including cherry, butterscotch and chocolate. Not only stocked locally, but expanding further afield – it’s clear that not only Doncaster has a love for this homemade vodka. Head over to their website to see the full range on offer. The Ship at Bawtry As first winners of the Best Pub Award at the Eastside Restaurant Awards in 2013, The Ship are proud owners of a plethora of accolades from CAMRA and Pub Restaurant of the Year by Marston’s. They certainly know what they’re doing. The pub has been run by the Wallis family for almost a decade; it was under the charge of Mandy and Dave Wallis until November 2015, but has been taken over by their son Chris, who is no stranger to running award-winning pubs. Before taking the helm at The Ship he ran the Blacksmiths Arms at Everton. The hearty pub grub and homely atmosphere at The Ship hark back to the glory days of pub food. They welcome all types of visitors with a friendly demeanour, efficient service and provide them with a relaxing environment in which to enjoy an array of food. Garden of delights PHOEBE SEYMOUR FINDS ALL KINDS OF THINGS TO ENJOY AT WALKERS NURSERIES GARDEN CENTRE – NOT LEAST THE FOOD! make a habit of being punctual for restaurant reviews, but at Walkers Nurseries Garden Centre and Restaurant, there is something exciting waiting at every corner. So much so, that my dining companion and I kept getting distracted whilst trying to navigate our way to the restaurant. First it was the deli counter, which enticed us with its freshly baked cakes and breads, then the colourful Easter decorations, including a family of human-sized rabbits, and then it was the rows and rows of spring flowers lining the greenhouses, but finally after weaving around the snaking path, we’d reached the dining hall with its high ceiling and low wooden beams. At a glance, it was nothing out of the ordinary, but then I noticed the range of seating areas. If you are wanting to get away from the hustle and bustle of the dining hall, there is a quiet space in the adjoining greenhouse. Then next door is their new café area - a separate greenhouse room with an ice cream and coffee counter, with gorgeous trees with plaited trunks reaching high above the tables – great for those that want nothing more than to snuggle into a corner with a coffee and a newspaper.

I

On this particular day, it was gloriously sunny, so my companion and I chose a table in the dining hall, next to the open glass doors, which looked out onto a Japanese garden with a bridge over a pond filled with golden koi and trees in bloom. Though it is a self-service restaurant, this isn’t your run-of-the-mill cafeteria. My companion chose the Sunday roast (£9.95), whilst I had a slice of the steak and potato pie (£8.45). The pie crust melted in my mouth, the gravy was rich and the tender pieces of meat effortlessly fell apart. This was served with long stemmed broccoli, mashed potato seasoned with parsley, a carrot and swede mash and cauliflower and leeks in a creamy cheese sauce. Meanwhile, my companion was praising her glazed pork, which came with thick crunchy crackling. There was turkey and beef too. This came with the same vegetables as my main, only with roast potatoes, parsnips and proper Yorkshire pudding, all covered in beef gravy – of course. My companion pointed out that there were a couple of vegetarian options to choose from too. A nearby diner overheard our conversation and add, “The stuffed peppers are amazing!”

For dessert, I ordered a scoop of coconut ice cream in a single cone (£2), whilst my companion chose a scoop of rum and raisin (£2) from local suppliers Thaymars, which we enjoyed surrounded my quirky statues in the gardens. We also took home a slice of jam-filled cherry Bakewell tart (£2.65) and a slice of hummingbird cake (£2.65) – a light and fluffy sponge cake filled with fruity pieces and topped with pecans. With a huge garden centre and gift shop, plenty of places to sit and eat, and a gorgeous outdoor area to enjoy, Walkers Nurseries offers not only gardening essentials, but a day out for all the family. he race is on to find the winners in the Eastside Restaurant Awards, and with an exciting new venue booked for this year’s event, it looks like being the biggest and best yet. On the evening of Monday 9 October, Doncaster Racecourse, home of the St Leger Festival and the venue over the decades for many a classic sporting contest, will host the 2017 celebration of the region’s culinary superstars. This glamorous black tie event has quickly become established as one of the big nights of the year in the social calendar; it also offers a huge boost to the local restaurant scene, as the winners enjoy their moment of triumph and all the nominated restaurants bask in the glow of positive publicity. Our previous venue was The Crown Hotel in Bawtry, and owner Craig Dowie and the team did a fabulous job in helping to put the Eastside Restaurant Awards on the map. Moving to Doncaster Racecourse, past masters at catering on the largest scales, ensures that we can extend our invitation beyond the local restaurant scene to include the general public.

There will also be a charity raffle to add to the total funds raised by the Equinox Ball, which will be staged on 30 September at Doncaster Deaf Trust College on behalf of Firefly Cancer Research. Eastside’s reviewers will be out and about over the next few months, checking out established and new restaurants, seeking out the very best the region has to offer. All our recent award winners have been exceptional, so expectations are high. Norman conquest HANNAH SANDERS IS WON OVER BY THE COSY SURROUNDINGS AND A MENU FULL OF CHOICES AT THE CLUMBER PARK HOTEL AND SPA. estled within a beautiful backdrop, The Clumber Park Hotel and Spa is an ideal location for a weekend away. However if the scenery doesn’t draw you in, the restaurant’s innovative menu surely will. Food is served in two rooms at the hotel. The Norman Inn which offers a friendly, relaxed, informal dining area and is open daily until 11pm, while The Courtyard Restaurant opens Friday and Saturday for a more intimate evening. Arriving on a sunny Tuesday evening we were dining at the Norman Inn and, walked into a room filled with chatter and tempting aromas. With typical country house hotel stylings such as a moose head mounted on the wall and canvases showcasing the beauty of Clumber Park, there’s a true cosiness here that makes for an ideal relaxed dinner. We shared a bottle of the Senso Sangiovese (£19) and I chose the hot smoked salmon and prawn tian (£7.50). It came served packed in a perfectly rounded circle with the fish doused in a rich sauce all complemented by the cherry and raspberry flavours of the wine. My partner opted for the smoked

N

chicken and ham hock terrine (£6.50) which was served with a selection of crispy bread and a sweet, tangy pineapple relish. For mains I chose the Cajun chicken (£13). The chicken was tender and the crispy skin had a very subtle heat to it. The dish came served with a generous portion of fries, home-made coleslaw and a chargrilled corn on the cob which added a summery element to the dish. My partner went for the chargrilled rump steak (£17) which was cooked to mediumwell done perfection with a rich, creamy peppercorn sauce to drizzle on top. The steak was partnered with roasted flat mushrooms and a basket filled to the brim with home-cut chunky chips. For dessert, I had the fresh fruit salad (£5) which was packed full of a variety of fresh fruit including pineapple, strawberries and watermelon and came with two scoops of lemon sorbet on top. However, my partners’ – the iced peanut parfait, churros and salted caramel sauce (£6.25) was the winner of the night. Not only did it look enticing but, the assortments of flavours and textures complemented each

other well. The crispy churros smothered in the soft peanut butter and sweet sauce were very moreish and this dish summed up exactly what Clumber Park Hotel does best – combining traditional food with a modern twist. Berry nice WIN ONE OF THREE BOTTLES OF BRITTAINS LOCALLY-PRODUCED RASPBERRY VODKA. new premium spirit guaranteed to bring a touch of class to any occasion is sweeping the region, and we have three bottles of Brittains Premium Raspberry Vodka to give away in our Eastside competition. Doncaster-based husband and wife team, John and Fiona Raper, are behind the popular raspberry vodka. The drink development began with raspberries from local fruit producers in Tickhill being crafted into a now much-coveted beverage.

Massage away the stress

Q&A: Send your wellbeing questions to Liz @ Elizabethann61@live.co.uk One will be chosen and published monthly. Clinic @ The Vanilla Rooms The Crown HotelBawtry. www.elizabethannbawtry.com Dear Liz

IS THE STRAIN OF DAILY LIFE GETTING YOU DOWN? ELIZABETH ANN THERAPIES

I've had a cold on and off for ages, it keeps coming and going. I start to feel better then catch another or it comes back. I never seem to be well lately, I think I'm run down and stressed. What do you recommend?

HAS SOME TIPS TO HELP. tress is a problem for many people these days. Might creating a spa environment at home be the solution? If you've had an awful day, you’re feeling stressed and fatigued and the weather is awful, why not ease the pain and give yourself a neck massage? It's quite easy... by using a few simple techniques, you can ease headaches, and stiff necks. How do we achieve a do-it-yourself neck massage? The neck is easy to reach, and as such is a good place to start. We all hold a lot of tension in the neck. If you follow these simple steps you can help work through any knots and tensions. 1 First thing to do is warm up the muscles in the neck, so start rubbing up and down the length of your neck with your fingers, applying firm pressure. 2 Tip your head back and start to pinch the neck at the base of the neck with the palm and fingers of each hand. Keep squeezing, and roll your head slowly forwards. Hold in this position for ten seconds, before moving your head back to an upright position. 3 Using both hands, apply deep circular movements around the neck area, paying particular attention to anywhere that feels tense. Keep pressure away from the spine area. You can use a nice oil or cream with lavender in to help aid relaxation.

S

Katie, Retford Dear Katie,

It sounds like your immune system is low. I would recommend reflexology as this will help boost your immune system and help rebalance your body and mind. It's also relaxing, so will help aid stress levels. You could also try taking some supplements Vitamin A is thought to strengthen the immune system. Or try kefir, a sour, fermented kind of milk that acts like a probiotic and boosts immune levels. Give them a go and let me know how you get on. Danny prefers working with oil on board, as it favours his ability to capture the many moods of the landscape and the magical 'skyscapes' that have become his focal point. He will be at the gallery on 6 May from noon to 3 pm Limited 2 Art are also delighted to introduce new artist Darren Stevenson, from Nottingham, with his collection of oil paintings synonymous with British landscapes, sculptures, bronzes, maquettes and drawings.
