Testimonials “All the staff are amazing and I could not be happier with the process and the results. After doing loads of research I travelled 150 miles to come here, but you travel for the best. Thank you so much. “Thank you to Mr Kazazzi and the team, really professional and so happy with my results. Would highly recommend. Thank you again to all the wonderful staff. “I cannot explain what an amazing surgeon Mr Kazzazi is! I recently had a breast lift with implants and the results are amazing. All the staff have been fantastic from start to finish making me feel cared for and not just another patient, as I've found with other clinics. This has been one of the best decisions I have ever made and I would highly recommend Mr Kazzazi to others considering surgery. “Thank you so much Mr Kazzazi for my non-surgical rhinoplasty. After years of hating my nose, you have changed my life. Can’t describe how happy I am. Thank you so so much!

See for yourself what makes Queen Ethelburga’s so special Just a week after achieving great results nationally at A level and BTEC, students and staff at Queen Ethelburga’s Collegiate celebrated excellent results at GCSE, across both of it’s senior schools. 80% of the results for Year 11 pupils were graded A* or A in QE College, or the new 7 to 9 grades. In the Faculty of Queen Ethelburga’s, which offers more creative and vocational options in addition to the traditional GCSE subjects, 93% of the grades were A*- C or equivalent. The Principal of Queen Ethelburga’s, Steven Jandrell, said it had been another excellent set of examination results and this was a tribute to the meticulous preparation that staff and pupils had put into the new, more rigorous GCSE courses: “At a time when there is national concern about the increased demands and how this will be reflected in the results, I am delighted to see such success across both our senior schools. Our 20% pass rate in the College at the new, exclusive grade 9 in English and Mathematics, compared with an estimated national average of 2% is indicative of the quality of our pupils’ performance and I could not be more pleased.” “Our personalised approach to working with each student is really working to our pupils’ benefit and, as our sixth form results showed last week, our GCSE performance is providing a platform from which great results are achieved across a very wide variety of subjects.” Within the College, at GCSE, Catheryne Kelly of Doncaster gained the equivalent of over 10 A grade GCSEs including the new numerical grades. Particular successes in the Faculty at GCSE included Laura Goff from Garforth who achieved 5A* and 2 A grades, as well as gaining an 8 and 7 in her English GCSEs and a C grade at AS level Mathematics, whilst Douglas Sword of Great Ouseburn, near York, gained 2A* and 3 A grades in addition to a 9 in Mathematics and an 8 and 7 in English. In last week’s results, Year 13 students in QE’s College, which follows a more traditional, academic curriculum, returned 85% of A level grades at A* or A, whilst Faculty students achieved 77% A* and A grades at A level and 91% Distinction* and Distinction grades (Equivalent in UCAS points to A* and A at A level). These results will continue a tradition over recent years for both schools to be near the top of national league tables for results.

Set your wedding free It’s the biggest day of your life, so flout convention and create a stunning wedding to remember.

B

ack in the day, your only wedding venue options were church or registry office and the reception tended to take place at your local pub or working men’s club. But in recent years brides and grooms have become much more imaginative. Every couple has different needs and tastes when it comes to planning their big day and this year’s trends are sure to suit everyone, whether you are looking for an outdoor, indoor, traditional or modern setting. If you are baffled about where to even begin planning your wedding, read on for some inspiration and to find out what types of venues are on trend for 2017.

The beach The beach trend is by no means a new concept, but with flights to European holiday destinations cheaper and easier to book than ever (thank the internet gods), sunny weddings by the coast are much more plausible than they used to be. And the best part? You are already on your honeymoon too. Find a hotel with a honeymoon suite and reception space with a beautiful white beach nearby, and you will have the perfect package. If you looking for a simple yet stunning setting, with near guaranteed sunshine, a beach wedding is most certainly for you. If you are piecing together your own beach wedding, The Knot has plenty of handy advice at www.theknot.com/beach-weddings

The outdoors

The barn

Getting married in the great outdoors can be an amazing experience, as long as you prepare for the variable British weather, of course. From woodlands to open fields, beautiful natural views can mean you don’t need much in the way of decorations. However, you may want an indoor area such as a marquee or building to have your reception in if the weather does change. Many people are also coupling this kind of setting with a boutique festival theme. UK law previously stated that you could not marry outside, in a tent, marquee or any other temporary structure. However, as of 2015, outdoor weddings are now allowed provided the venue obtain an additional licence. From garden to mountain weddings, find all the ideas and advice you will need for outdoor weddings at www.theknot.com/outdoor-weddings

Barns continue to be a popular option, which suit the equally popular rustic and shabby chic wedding looks – get those jam jars, worn wooden chairs and fairy lights at the ready. These are usually based on working farms, but there are also disused barns that have been bought and renovated by party organisers who put the venue up for hire. If this is the case, they are also very likely to do a lot of the setting up and wedding planning for you. Again this is a great venue that can be transformed from a hall for your ceremony, to a dancefloor and banqueting area. And as these venues tend to be away from residential areas, you can make a bit of noise and party til the early hours. Get hitched in a rustic barn or under a thatched gazebo surrounded by the north Yorkshire moors at Ox Pasture Hall. To find out more visit

www.oxpasturehallhotel.com/weddings/ barn-wedding

The treehouse Combining two themes we have already touched upon, a treehouse offers the simple and rustic charm of the barn with the natural charm of the forest. A treehouse often being a childhood dream, those young at heart will jump at the chance to perform their nuptials here. Thought of as of being quite unconventional in the past, this option is becoming a lot more widely considered. What is more, a gorgeous forest will make a fantastic backdrop for photos – let’s just hope none of your wedding guests are afraid of heights. The Lodge in Scotland is a great place to start and it helps that our neighbouring country has looser laws when it comes to outdoor weddings. Find out more at www.thelodgescotland.com/weddings

A partnership made in Bawtry £5m deal signals the start of a new era for two of the town’s leading venues.

T

he Crown Hotel is renowned for hosting some of the region’s most spectacular special occasions and, as part of a recent £5million pound acquisition, managing director Craig Dowie has partnered with Jason Cooper and Dave Pain, the owners of Bawtry Hall, to procure the hotel from the previous shareholders and enhance Bawtry’s position as one of the leading leisure destinations in Yorkshire. “Alongside Bawtry Hall and the former bottling plant site on Tickhill Road, The Crown Hotel acquisition is another significant investment in Bawtry, and demonstrates our faith in this affluent market town,” says Dave Pain. Dowie and Cooper had held discussions with Dowie’s son, Alex twelve months previous to the deal and as result, they merged their media businesses to create Keyhole Creative Media, an award winning, media and marketing agency with offices at Bawtry Hall.

38 Eastside | www.eastsidemag.co.uk

Subsequently, discussions started on acquiring both the freehold and operational aspect of the Crown Hotel, and Cooper, Dowie and the Ludlam brothers went on to conclude the deal at the end of July 2017. A further win-win for the parties, Cooper simultaneously held discussions with Dowie on how the new Crown management team could work with his team at Bawtry Hall with its superb Georgian façade, magnificent rooms, high ceilings and acres of beautiful gardens - to create a unique luxury wedding venue. And with that said, Bawtry Hall is set to open as an exclusive wedding venue in the spring of 2018. Of course, there is plenty to get excited about in the meantime too, as there are still some select dates free for Christmas 2017 bookings. Contact the team on 01302 2710341 or email events@crownhotel-bawtry.com and like Bawtry Hall on Facebook for the latest news and announcements.

Jason Cooper Born in Doncaster, Jason has built a significant property development and investment portfolio in and around South Yorkshire and North Nottinghamshire. Cooper also invests in various other companies and has active interests in the video game and technology sectors. “I am delighted to have made this investment and to be working with Craig and his team. The Crown is a great business, run by an amazing group of people and it is also a very important property in the heart of the Bawtry community.” Craig Dowie Living locally in Retford, Dowie has been MD of the Crown Hotel for the past 13 years, along with the Rutland Hotel in Sheffield. “This is a fantastic opportunity for two of the most iconic and historical venues in Yorkshire to come together to confirm the market town of Bawtry as one of the leading leisure destinations in Yorkshire and Nottinghamshire.”

Weddings at Bawtry Hall Imagine yourself just a stone’s throw away from the heart of Bawtry, amidst a seven acre haven of stunning white roses and formal gardens. Alexander Dowie Under Alexander Dowie’s managing directorship, Keyhole Creative Media won ‘Start up Business of the Year 2015’ followed by ‘Business Person of the Year (35 and under)’ at the 2016 Doncaster Business Awards. “After years of strong growth for Keyhole Creative Media, I am delighted to become a director of the Crown Hotel, and will use this opportunity to ensure our team at Keyhole Creative help ensure that not only the Crown and Bawtry Hall are fully supported, but also Bawtry itself as leading tourism destination.” ABOVE: Libby and Tori.

Katey Dent Katey Dent has been promoted to the Board of Directors for Bawtry Hall and the Crown Hotel, where she’s has headed up corporate sales and marketing for 15 years. “I’m really excited that the Crown Hotel have joined forces with Bawtry Hall to fuse all our years of experience with the hall’s elegance. Made by Chelsey

Beautiful bridal accessories by this local teacher-cum-designer have gone global – and business shows no signs of slowing down, writes Hannah Sanders.

C

helsey Peart (nee Crossland) has always had a keen interest in the fashion world. After studying fashion design at university the 26-year-old from Rawmarsh has built a career for herself as an art and textiles teacher. Unlike most teachers, Chelsey has a secret second life. After the lesson plans are written and homework marked, she breaks out her sewing machine and channels her creative energy into producing intricately beaded bridal accessories. Her portfolio includes garters, head pieces and chokers, all of which are individually made and tailored to the needs of her ever-growing clientele. This Rotherham-based entrepreneur, has previously taken London Fashion Week by storm and is now wowing blushing brides across the world with her bespoke range of bridal accessories. “Fashion has always been an important part of my life and began with my love of the eclectic,” said Chelsey. “Seeing my collection on the catwalk at London Fashion Week gave me a much-needed confidence boost. It made me realise that people liked my work and

42 Eastside | www.eastsidemag.co.uk

were genuinely interested in the designs I produced. It planted a seed in my mind and I’d find myself awake at 3am and reaching for the nearest thing to jot my ideas down.”

During an encounter with a make-up artist, Chelsey found out about Launchpad, a free-to-access business support service aimed at helping new entrepreneurs

transform their ideas into a commercial reality. Launchpad is a unique scheme which forms part of the Sheffield City Region Growth Hub. This is funded by the European Union Regional Development Fund, part funded by the European Regional Development Fund and delivered by local authorities. It provides free help and support to budding entrepreneurs who are thinking of starting their own business, or who have started trading within the last two years. “I liked the idea of running a business, but working full-time meant I couldn’t always attend training workshops due to my classroom commitments. I wanted to find a way of sharing my two passions in life; creating beautiful products and inspiring others in a classroom.” This year, Chelsey has been working alongside dedicated business advisor, Julia Millea, who has been helping her develop and refine business plans as well as spending time developing a digital marketing strategy. “Chelsey is an immensely talented designer. From the outset she had a very

clear idea as to what she wanted to achieve, but like many people, wasn’t sure where to start when it came to running a business,” said Julia. “It’s always rewarding to help individuals who are passionate and dedicated. Launchpad was set up to help people who are thinking of running a business, enabling them to access the right advice at the right time. We’ve been working with Chelsey from an early stage, helping her develop her business plan which is already attracting fashion-savvy brides from across the globe.” Since working with Launchpad, Chelsey’s unique hand-made products have attracted global interest, including brides from America and New Zealand. Her business, Chelsey Crossland Bespoke, also works with a number of retail outlets in South Yorkshire, and she is setting her sights on opening her own boutique in the future. “If someone had told me this time last year I would be receiving orders for my designs from the four corners of the world I would have laughed at them, but since

working with Launchpad that’s exactly what has happened,” adds Chelsey. The success of the bridal range has given Chelsey the confidence to add new lines to her collection, including gothic-inspired alternative pieces. She is also drawing inspiration from the roaring twenties, Latin and ballroom costumes, chandeliers and ornate gilded window frames to add some glamour to her new range. Chelsey will also be adding occasional dresses, loungewear and beachwear to her luxury lifestyle brand. “I decided that 2017 was my now or never moment. With a new restaurant, new bedrooms and new opening times, there’s never been a better time to visit Rossington Hall.

Embracing tradition C

reate your own stately experience as one of Yorkshire’s most spectacular venues, Rossington Hall, now opens seven days a week. The restored Victorian property based just off Great North Road was built in 1882, and after a varied and interesting history as a private home, training college for missionary priests and boarding school, it was reopened to the public in 2012 as a wedding and event venue. Originally only open for dining at a weekend, owner Gary Gee is now pleased to announce that it is open as a luxury wedding, conference and dining venue and hotel, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The Conservatory has recently been restyled to create a second restaurant where guests can enjoy Classics in the Conservatory,

from Menu 1882. This dining style is more laid back and there is no dress code. Available every day from 11am onwards, the menu has a delicious range of dishes such as Humble Pie – a twist on corned beef hash, named as tribute to Michael Humble who owned the estate during the early 1800s and is thought to have designed the original Italianate sunken garden. The full menu can be found on the Rossington Hall website. In the Library, dinner is still a formal affair and guests are asked to dress smartly. Both Menu 1882 and the Signature Collection can be enjoyed in both restaurant settings, the Signature Collection and the seven-course tasting menu is only available from 7pm on Fridays and Saturdays. However, guests wanting to dine should be aware that the hall is occasionally booked

for exclusive hire, so booking in advance is always advised to avoid disappointment. Rossington Hall also offer dining experiences in an intimate room for family occasions and private business dinners, with a dedicated member of staff to attend to you. The hall is a popular luxury wedding and event venue and sits in a stunning 250-acre estate. The Italian Sunken Garden, Walled Garden and Lily Pond are all ideal locations for fantastic photo opportunities. There are nine stunning bedrooms available for those wanting a luxury night away while a new rate from £96 a night for business users and last minute bookings is also available. “After several years of painstakingly restoring Rossington Hall to its former glory, we have completed the first floor luxury bedrooms and are busy working on the top floor accommodation,” says Gary. “Demand has dictated the need for another restaurant, so that our overnight guests and day visitors can enjoy a relaxed dining experience in our newly restyled Conservatory opposed to the more formal existing Library restaurant. “We have created our Menu 1882, Classics in the Conservatory, to accommodate exquisite traditional every day classics, whilst keeping our twist on being honest to the building and our ambition to be the best at what we do.” Rossington Hall Great North Road, Doncaster, DN11 0HN Tel: 01302 866822 www.rossingtonhall.co.uk

Established for ten years, and with owner Jackie Maskey having an experienced background in training, development and planning celebration events, it’s safe to say you’re in good hands with White Rose Occasions. “Moving into this role at White Rose has been one of the important parts of my life, and it’s fulfilling my dream to create memories for others,” says Jackie. The company offers an extensive range of services to suit every customer’s style, including venue hire and styling along with helping find the correct suppliers. They will

also take care of all the event co-ordination and confirm bookings. “We pride ourselves on innovative ideas, catering for individuality and creating bespoke weddings and events.” White Rose can cater for numerous events including corporate events, dinners, award ceremonies, birthdays and dances along with intimate dinners for up to 12 people. The most inclusive service is the full package, which incorporates everything from style and venue suggestions, along with a one hour complimentary consultation. They will also produce a timeline guide to demonstrate the planning process and keep customers up to date. When it comes to styling, White Rose pulls out all the stops. Their team has the creativity and imagination to bring your ideas to life. Whether it’s a tipi, woodland, shabby chic or a plush themed wedding or event, they have the skills to make it one of a kind. They also recently launched the aisle package, which offers customers the chance to have a bespoke backdrop, white aisle carpet along with lanterns. The business works with a variety of hotels and venues to provide customers with the ideal setting, such as The Crown Hotel, Mount Pleasant Hotel, Rossington Hall, Wentbridge House Hotel, Castle Park Rugby Club and the Yorkshire Wildlife Park. Recently they decorated Yorkshire Wildlife Park for a wedding, draping the ceiling and the staircase and creating a bespoke live backdrop to the bride’s requirements, which gained fantastic reviews.

Five star testimonial from the bride “I was recommended White Rose Occasions by my wedding venue as a partner of choice. As I had a unique idea for my zoo wedding, I was worried about selecting someone to bring my dreams to life. However, I needn’t have worried at all! “From start to finish the entire team were fantastic – nothing was too much to ask for and they totally got my wedding vision. Even creating a bespoke tropical backdrop for my ceremony and sharing pictures with me to help me visualise the plans. “Having never seen the room at the zoo decorated as I visualised it before the morning of my wedding, and walking in to see the beautiful flowers on the stairs, the draping the staging etc… brought me to tears. This was at the Wildlife Park. The room at the Crown Hotel Bawtry looked as equally amazing as did the secret garden. I would HIGHLY recommend White Rose Occasions for any of your room decorating needs! Thanks to Jackie and her team for helping make my big day that bit special.” – Emily Armstrong

White Rose Occasions dressed the venue for the 2017 Westside Restaurant Awards

White Rose Occasions frequently decorate a range of venues, and this year were on hand to dress the Westside Restaurant Awards venue, and will also be doing this for the upcoming Eastside Restaurant Awards. “White Rose Occasions were able to provide Westside with black and gold candelabras and a starlight backdrop, along with the complete chair covers and gold sashes and runners to complete the look,” said Jackie. “The entire team worked extremely hard to complete the venue leaving ample time before the event took place, and the Westside team were extremely helpful especially Jill – thank you for your help.” Other event successes have been children’s birthday themed parties, including Beauty and the Beast. “Having vast experience in the childcare industry, by owning a day nursery previously, lecturing at college and being a child care assessor/tutor and internal verifier, gave me good knowledge to understand what children like,” says Jackie.

Doncaster Sheffield Airport and Sheffield Arena announce major new partnership

Wedding bliss for local couple When Alex Foster Smith and Sarah Burgon of Woodfield Plantation, Doncaster decided to tie the knot, Sarah and her fabulous bridesmaids wanted to arrive at the ceremony in a fleet of unusual vehicles – and JP Walton & Son were only too pleased to help. Thanks to the fabulous chauffeurs, the bridal party made it to the ceremony at Unique Occasions in Loversall on time and in style.

More choice and colour at Yorkshire Windows Leading South Yorkshire home improvements company, Yorkshire Windows is launching a whole new range of products aimed at taking the uPVC window and door industry into a new era of design excellence. The Rotherham based company, which also has a main visitor showroom at Ferndale Garden Centre in Dronfield, is already the region’s sole supplier of Smartglass Dynamic, the first automatically self-tinting glass technology for conservatories, orangeries and other glazing elements. But managing director, Ian Chester, is also now launching a whole range of products directed specifically at meeting the needs of an increasingly discerning market. And one of the major announcements is that for the company’s new season range of windows, doors, French doors, bi-fold doors and conservatories, traditional white is no longer the only colour option. The latest generation of woodgrain foils – available in 26 colours from stock and with hundreds more available on request – means that colour is set to transform the market, with Yorkshire Windows at the forefront of this important innovation. “Heritage shades and pastel colours are proving extremely popular, especially with people trying to maintain the period feel of older properties, where the standard white has so often in the past proved to be unsuitable,” said Ian. “People no longer have their windows changed out of necessity. They change them for the experience and because they want a look in line with changing trends and tastes.” Other areas that have improved in the past few years include such increasingly important features as energy efficiency and protection from the elements, including the patented highperformance multifunctional weather seal, sound proofing and security.

Respect Funerals named runnerup at Good Funeral Awards Regional funeral director, Respect Direct Funeral Services, is honoured to be voted runner up in the Best National Direct Cremation Provider in the UK category at this year’s Good Funeral Awards. Alison Finch, who runs Respect Direct Funeral Services with branches in Bawtry, Worksop Gainsborough, Kirton and Barton with its two green burial parks, said: “We are so proud to have been nominated by so many for our services and come runner up out of some 4,000 funeral directors in the UK and out of the hundreds of excellent funeral professionals who were nominated by the public this year. “It’s nice to be recognised for our cremation services as most local people think we only offer green burial.” The Good Funeral Awards are now in their sixth year and recognise excellence in the funeral sector. Brian Jenner, the event organiser, said: “The awards recognise all those unsung heroes who work hard for the bereaved and whose role can so easily be overlooked. Some of the nicest people in Britain work in the funeral business.”

Yorkshire’s award-winning Doncaster Sheffield Airport (DSA) has announced a major new partnership that has seen it acquire the naming rights to the Sheffield Arena – one of the UK’s biggest venues. The six-figure investment by DSA will see the arena re-named as the FlyDSA Arena. The initial three-year deal comes just as DSA has been named as the UK’s best small airport by Which? consumer group, and will see the two organisations work in close partnership to promote not only the airport and the venue, but also the wider Sheffield region. Chairman of Peel Airports, Robert Hough, said: “DSA is an airport the Sheffield City region and Yorkshire can be proud of; currently the fastest growing in the UK with more destinations and airlines than ever before and officially rated the best small airport in the UK. “DSA and the Arena are key parts of Sheffield and the region’s leisure offering so by working together we hope to attract even more visitors to the region.” The FlyDSA Arena will be taken to new heights with a major overhaul of all venue branding and the agreement will also include a re-brand of the 1.5million-plus tickets sold across the ticketing network, all leaflets, posters, venue signage and advertising to FlyDSA Arena.

Bikeathon raises money As part of their Shape up for Summer campaign, Bodyscene Health & Leisure Club based at Hellaby Hall Hotel in Rotherham, raised an impressive £1,757 for Macmillan & Bluebell Wood Hospice. Staff and gym members, including boxer Johnny Nelson, were invited to take part in a charity bikeathon. Two bikes were continuously in use for 12 hours, meaning 48 slots of 30 minutes were needed in total to complete the distance of the Tour de Yorkshire. A Macmillan coffee morning with cakes supplied by members was also held, alongside a raffle with prizes donated by local businesses to support the event. Alex Carratt, general manager of Bodyscene said: “The event was a fantastic success and we wish to thank the local community for their support for two very worthy local charities.” Eastside | www.eastsidemag.co.uk 53

STUCK FOR HALLOWEEN FANCY DRESS IDEAS? RACHEL MARTIN’S GOT YOU COVERED. nfamous celebrity twosomes, on-screen pairings, spooky classics and superhero duos - the options for dressing up as a couple for Halloween are endless, but where to start? Whether you’re an expert in the fancy-dress department or are just looking for some inspiration, we've put together a list of spooktacular outfit ideas.

I

The Addams Family

Gatsby

The Addams Family is classic Halloween fare and doesn't require complicated costumes - a side parting and moustache for him and long black hair and a ghostly complexion for her will suffice.

OK, you might not be the only couple doing The Great Gatsby this Halloween, but who would turn down the chance to get all gussied-up roaring '20s-style?

QUEEN OF HEARTS AND THE MAD HATTER If you’re both feeling like going over-the-top with ridiculously fun makeup and costumes, what about this crazy redheaded couple?

DAY OF THE DEAD You can wear just about anything you want - the key factor here is the impressive face paint. And you can even compete to see who comes up with the more creative design.

Merman and Mermaid Simple mystical costumes are both inexpensive and easy to make. All you need is a glue gun, seashells and lots of glitter.

BONNIE AND CLYDE When getting into character as the notorious 1930s bank robbers, adopt the look of Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway in the 1967 film. Dunaway with her blonde bob, artfully placed beret, cropped knit and neckerchief makes criminality incredibly chic.

ZOMBIES It's no surprise that multitudes of Halloween enthusiasts re-create some form of this classic costume year after year - you can't go wrong. Sickeningly green skin, rotting limbs, damaged clothing and vacant stares basically, you can take any costume idea and zombify it with a little make-up and some fake blood.

Vincent Vega and Mia Walla ce This sure-f ire Pulp Fictio n look is pretty straig htforward to knock up - you just need a couple of black wigs an d pretty muc h what you'd w ear to work. Work on thos e twists though .

Terri’s hair after the treatment

Smartbond – the easy way to healthier hair GIVE YOUR HAIR THE CELEBRITY TREATMENT AT SAKS HAIRDRESSING, DONCASTER. leaching, dying, straightening… the things we do to make our hair look better can also take a toll on its health. Eastside publishing manager Terri Moore has been a dedicated blonde and lover of straighteners for a number of years, so was the perfect candidate for L’Oreal Smartbond, a brand new professional hair treatment available at Saks Hairdressing in Doncaster. Designed especially for hairdressers, Smartbond is a new generation bond strengthening system that has been specifically formulated to work in synergy with L’Oreal’s other pre-lightener and colour products. All of the hair products Saks use are part of the L’Oreal range, making the salon the perfect one-stop for more luscious locks. Smartbond can be used separately or can be mixed with your colour to prevent further damage, as well as making hair softer, stronger and shinier. This two-step process is so amazing, even celebrities are giving it a go. “When Kim Kardashian famously went from black to blonde, she used this treatment to keep her hair soft and shiny,” says stylist Rebecca Calladine, who co-owns the salon with her husband Paul. “Smartbond is a protective service, which helps to strengthen weakened keratin bonds in the hair – it even makes your colour last

B

longer. It’s only available in salons, but Saks prides itself in being the best value around.” With no more convincing needed, Terri promptly booked an appointment and turned up to the salon on High Street. As Terri relaxed into one of the salon’s comfy chairs at a washing station, Rebecca mixed the first formula with bleach and applied it to Terri’s hair. This was then left to develop as usual. Once the bleach was washed out, a thick conditioner-like formula was worked into Terri’s hair, which was then wrapped in a towel and left to develop for a further 20 minutes. Her hair was then cut as usual. A week later, Terri was still praising the treatment and revelling in the fabulous results. “My hair felt in such good condition after this treatment - even when I woke up the next day,” she beams. “Normally, my hair goes frizzy and has kinks in it from where I’ve been laid, but it was still silky smooth.” “I would definitely recommend this treatment to people who have coloured hair to get it back to its original condition and make hair manageable again. It’s meant I can lay off the straighteners every day and I swear it’s actually made my hair grow faster!”

Smile again with dental implants A DENTAL IMPLANT CAN PROVIDE A COMFORTABLE, COSMETIC SOLUTION TO REPLACE YOUR MISSING TEETH. Before the implant

missing front tooth has a massive impact on your appearance and confidence. Often a denture is used to fill the space, but this will need to cover the roof of the mouth. It may be uncomfortable and embarrassing if it moves or drops down. It can also inhibit your lifestyle. You may not be able to eat the foods you really want to, for instance. An implant could be the solution. At Green Square Dental and Implant Centre, they offer the ideal level of professionalism and service to give you total confidence in your decision to choose their practice. Their Principal Dentist, Duncan Park has vast experience in the field of implantology, having completed over 13 years in providing this type of service. Duncan has acquired a comprehensive portfolio of cases, having performed a variety of treatments ranging from a single tooth to replacing multiple teeth on many different patients. Your teeth are as unique as you are and it takes a skilled dental practitioner like Duncan to provide a quality dental implant. Professional, caring, reassuring and understanding; this is direct feedback from previous and current patients in describing their own personal experiences.

A

68 Eastside | www.eastsidemag.co.uk

Their practice has been refurbished to the highest standard, providing a luxurious, comfortable and calming atmosphere, in which their patients will feel relaxed prior to treatment. They aim to provide a high level of customer service. A part of this is being able to provide a seamless and convenient patient journey with each stage of the treatment being carried out at their premises in Rotherham. The initial comprehensive consultation includes all X-rays and if necessary they can complete CT scans, therefore negating the need for extra hospital visits. For the most nervous patients, they have the advantage of providing IV sedation with their fully-qualified sedation nurse working onsite. Choosing a dental implant can provide a cosmetic, comfortable and natural solution to replace your missing teeth. A titanium screw is gently placed into position and once healed, a crown (porcelain tooth) can be cemented or screwed on top. The gentleman in these photographs has just completed treatment at Green Square Dental to replace the upper front tooth and the result is excellent.

After

Many people don’t realise that this is an achievable option available to them. So if you have a missing tooth or know someone who does, why not give the practice a call. They will be happy to chat to you over the telephone about the whole process or invite you in if you prefer to speak face to face. Start your journey to fixing the problem. The team at Green Square Dental & Implant Centre hope to see you soon.

RESPECT DRIVERS’ PAGEANT DRIVES INTO BAWTRY This year’s annual Respect Drivers’ Pageant was the most successful event for many years, with an estimated 3,500 visitors and over 250 classic, historic and supercars on display in Bawtry – some of which could be driven by the public. Next year’s will be the sixth event and the date has already been agreed as Bank Holiday Sunday 26 August. The event is organised every year by Respect Green Burial Parks. The Stig and Batman were out and about taking photos with all the families and the auction, together with the dream passenger rides raised, over £1,900. It was yet another exciting, interesting and entertaining day for all the family. One member of the public said: “It was a brilliant day. My daughter loved being driven round in the super cars. Her best was Mr Clough's Ford Escort rally car.” Not only was it a great day for drivers and families, it was also a fantastic day for local businesses. The staff at Orbis Jewellery added: “It was a 70 Eastside | www.eastsidemag.co.uk

great day - can't wait for next year! The art retailers sold three paintings and received commissions for more. “One bar said their takings were 300 per cent up on last year and that was their best ever day. Record-breaking takings were also recorded for many other cafés, confectioners and general Bawtry retailers too.” Businesses even had the added bonus of being entered into a Best Dressed Retailer competition where the Town House came out on top with their Ferrari theme, in honour of the brand’s 70th Anniversary with prizes also going to The Tasting Note, Cooplands and the Market Bar. The organisers at Respect added: “We would like to thank everyone, the public, the drivers and their magnificent vehicles, and the support of some of the businesses in Bawtry. “Put the date in your diary for next year’s August bank holiday and keep an eye on social media for @RespectBawtry for more exciting news about an additional new event in May next year!”

The hotel also sponsored a race at the Ladies Day event. The winning horse was Euginio with jockey Andrea Atzeni and trainer Richard Hannon. The Crown team presented the prize. The Vanilla Rooms at The Crown were also pampered and ready to enjoy a day at the races. Vernon Kay stayed at the Crown over Leger week, while Johnny Vegas and James Baxter were back at the Crown the following week and were only too happy to have some snaps with the team.

COLEMAN’S PIZZERIA & STEAKHOUSE

BAWTRY’S BAR & BRASSERIE

No prizes for guessing what’s on the menu here, but when comfort food tastes this good, who needs surprises? The open kitchen is all part of the show – watch your pizza being flung to order, and steaks really benefit from the authentic flame-grilled flavour.

Always busy and very much at the heart of the Bawtry social scene, char-grilled steaks and pizzas are at the heart of a tried and tested food menu. With good beers, a great wine list and a buzzing atmosphere, a good night out is guaranteed.

MILLER & CARTER

Steak is the name of the game here – on or off the bone, hung for up to 50 days and with a huge variety of cuts and accompanying sides and sauces. Great service too – the waiting staff know the menu inside out and are eager to please. RELISH

It’s the relaxed atmosphere and friendly staff that helps Relish stand out from the rest. Regular live music nights are a real crowdpuller and popular dishes include sharing platters of ribs and wings, steaks and pizzas. The cocktail menu is pretty special too.

COUNTING HOU23

This new wine bar combines a contemporary look with good wines and a menu packed with dishes including locally-sourced steaks and homemade desserts. The perfect setting for a relaxing afternoon with friends. TOWNHOUSE TEA ROOMS

A complete makeover has breathed new life into this familiar Bawtry landmark, once a traditional tea room now a stylish bar and restaurant. The striking new look with multi-coloured striped wallpaper, plush velvet stools and luminous mirrors definitely has the wow factor. The perfect lunchtime retreat.

AAGRAH

Genuine Kashmiri cuisine, served by attentive, knowledgeable staff in a luxurious setting, ensures the dining experience at Aagrah is always special. The varied menu means everyone, including vegetarians, is catered for and the hyderbadi sauce is so good some customers take home bottles of it. THAI AT THE SAL

Here’s a taste of something different... authentic Thai cuisine above a traditional Doncaster pub. It sounds unlikely but there’s no mistaking the tastes and delicious aromas emanating from this welcome newcomer. ZARA’S

In the sleepy village of Tickhill something spicy stirs. Zara’s has offered a crowd-pleasing menu of classic Indian food and exemplary service for many years now and remains understandably popular.

THE HARVEY ARMS

This gastro-pub specialises in locally-sourced ingredients and has been lovingly restored in recent years. Blessed with a beautiful countryside setting, the Cadeby delivers big flavours and offers a well-balanced mix of pub favourites and gastro treats. A fantastic range of ales, wines and speciality whiskies adds to the fun.

Mouth-watering specials include Harvey’s Mega Burger. There’s a family restaurant, a beer garden and the Harvey Up in Arms music festival is a real crowd-pleaser.

THE ODDDFELLOWS

Set in the heart of Carlton, this newly refurbished pub serves up tasty treats including homemade pies, burgers and desserts in a contemporary setting with an underlit stone bar, walls full of prints and photographs, and a striking orange logo of glasses, ‘tache and bowtie. Odd, in a good way.

THE SHIP

Hearty pub grub and a friendly atmosphere is what The Ship delivers. Four guest ales are always available and Sunday lunch is a food highlight. Plenty of choice, generous portions and always a cheerful welcome.

The retro exterior with its old school hanging baskets is little misleading; Caviars specialises in cutting edge cuisine with a flourish. Every plate is a picture and the sensibly small menu is full of invention. The well-chosen wine list represents tremendous value. THE OLD WEIGHING ROOM

This ultra-stylish restaurant and bar at Doncaster Racecourse has been turning heads since its revamp a few years ago and it continues to impress with its 1920s domed glass bar area and contemporary dining room. Expect modern European cuisine and look out for special themed food and music nights. THE SEPARATIST

This quirkily different venue in Torworth celebrates the local connection with the Pilgrim Fathers, who sailed from England to America on the Mayflower in 1620. The décor is restrained yet luxurious and the menu offers traditional cooking with a modern twist. There’s a good wine list and a wide range of cocktails.

This classic British pub has a warm, homely feel with cheering log fires and an equally hearty welcome. The menu consists of delicious pub food favourites and the Sunday roast dinner comes highly recommended.

Garden centre restaurants now offer more than just a cuppa and a sandwich and Walkers Nurseries has a new café area which looks out onto a Japanese garden, the perfect setting for everything from Sunday roasts to hearty pies and stuffed peppers. There’s a separate ice cream and coffee counter too.

This unique and casual haunt has an industrial-inspired look which just oozes charm and cosiness. There is an impressive assortment of tempting drinks and food and the ethos is all about bringing people together. RIOJA

EATING OUT

Steaking a claim… MILLER AND CARTER BRINGS THE TASTE OF TEXAS TO ROSSINGTON, WRITES HANNAH SANDERS. s we pulled in to Miller and Carter, we couldn’t help but be impressed. Smart signage points the way and with a majestic bull sculpture in a prominent position, there is no mistaking this place is all about steak. The venue has a long standing history in the hospitality industry, housing a pub and restaurant previous to this, but it is clear once you step through the doors that it has undergone a significant refurbishment and looks brand new. The history has been beautifully preserved, with open fireplaces and intimate rooms leading off from the main bar and restaurant areas. The main expanse of the restaurant boasts panelled walls and red leather seats along with sections of exposed brick walls and a selection of contemporary artwork portraying more of those bulls. We were immediately seduced by the divine cooking smells wafting over from the restaurant, and once settled in our private booth, ordered a prosecco (£4.20) and Pepsi (£2.65) before starting on our quest for the perfect steak. But as a preliminary diversion to start I chose the Hoisin sticky duck wings (£6.50) which were tender, sweet, finished with a sprinkling of sesame seeds and served with a refreshing pineapple and ginger dressed slaw. My partner opted for the pulled brisket

A

croquettes (£6.75), which were succulent, delicately flavoured with bourbon and coated in panko-style breadcrumbs. Steak is the signature dish at Miller and Carter, although other choices are available. Before ordering your main the staff take the time to explain the different cuts of meat, what sauces and sides complement them, and why they have adopted the Texan tradition of serving a lettuce wedge, topped with sauce – we chose bacon and honey mustard – before the main in order to cleanse the palate. My partner went for the staff ’s recommendation of the 10oz grain fed sirloin (£25.95). This premium meat was grain fed and aged for 50 days, resulting in a deliciously tender cut with a rich and buttery flavour. The dish was complemented by the creamy cracked peppercorn sauce and crisp onion loaf, finished with a balsamic glazed tomato and seasoned fries. I opted for the off-the-grill honey and chilli glazed chicken (£13.95), which was sensational with its crisp sweet glaze which had undertones of chilli providing just the right amount of heat. Paired with the preserved lemon aioli and dressed slaw the dish had a perfect balance of flavours. Saying my partner has a sweet tooth is an understatement, so it was no surprise that he chose the chocolate brownie (£5.95) and latte (£2.50) for dessert. Served warm, the

brownie was gooey, topped with vanilla bean ice cream, drizzled with a rich Belgian chocolate sauce and finished with a dark chocolate and pistachio shard. I went for the raspberry crème brulee (£5.25) and a double espresso (£2.50), which was a creamy Madagascan vanilla heaven, topped with a raspberry sugar crunch, fresh fruit and a home-baked biscuit on the side. CHRISTMAS

So why do we trot out the turkey? HANNAH SANDERS LOOKS AT CHRISTMAS TRADITIONS FROM AROUND THE WORLD. any people, if they were served something other than turkey on Christmas Day, would be shocked and stunned, as let’s face it, it’s a given during the festive season. As we sit down for Christmas dinner, you may wonder how the turkey, a bird native to the America became the centrepiece of our festive meal. Turkeys were introduced in Britain over 500 years ago, by a young traveller and Yorkshireman William Strickland, who, on his travels acquired six birds from American Indian traders, and in 1550 he was granted a coat of arms which included a “turkey-cock in his pride proper”. Before that, the choice of meat was either goose, boar head’s and even peacock- I don’t know about you, but turkey certainly sounds more appealing. Henry VIII was the first English King to enjoy turkey in the 16th century, although it took another 400 years before Edward VII made eating turkey fashionable at Christmas. Turkey is now a regular feature on a great majority of British Christmas tables, although it’s only gone mainstream over the last 60 years. However, believe it or not turkey isn’t a staple across the world, with other countries having a whole host of equally as special traditions.

Some countries celebrate Christmas on 7 January, with a whole host of customs that are different from Santa and his reindeers that we are familiar with. Iceland has not one but 13 Santa Clauses, with the first one descending down the mountain 13 days before, leaving treats in children’s shoes. Traditionally on Christmas Eve, they will enjoy ptarmigan – a bird from the grouse family. In Argentina, the main meal is eaten on Christmas Eve, with popular dishes including roasted pork, stuffed tomatoes, Christmas

Norway, Santa is called Julenissen, presents are exchanged on Christmas Eve, and instead of mince pies, rice pudding is left out for Nisse (gnomes).

bread and desserts such as pan dulce and panetone. Over in Norway, Santa is called Julenissen, presents are exchanged on Christmas Eve, and instead of mince pies, rice pudding is left out for Nisse (gnomes). Many people will choose from either roasted pork ribs or dried mutton for their festive meal. As Christmas falls over summer in Australia, BBQ’s in the great outdoors are popular, rather than turkey and gravy. Australians also decorate their house with ‘Christmas Bush’, a native tree with small green leaves and cream coloured flowers and Santa gives his reindeers a well-deserved break, taking kangaroos on his present delivery. Across to Poland, where presents start arriving on 6 December as it’s St Nicholas Day. Unlike the UK, he dresses in white and gold rather than the red and white we are familiar with. On Christmas Eve, families traditionally enjoy 12 dishes including the country’s famous pierogi dumplings and oplatek – a Christmas wafer. So, there you have it – Christmas, its food and of course Santa comes in many different variations, each one as equally special and memorable as the next, and this year when you are sitting down to tuck into your much awaited turkey you’ll know the history behind it.
